The new colour sorter, courtesy with a little help from a Northern Development Initiative Trust grant – arrived late last year.
With more than 50 years of seed cleaning experience – the colour sorter is just the most recent in a long line of support for producers – with the ability accommodate both common and pedigreed seeds.
“The new sorter separates by kernel colour and has the capacity of 1,000 bushels an hour ” says team lead out at SPG - Harris Ford.
“It has helped exceed our production capacity and has us looking to expand in new ways.”
By way of history - 1963 grain producers from Rolla, Dawson Creek, Progress, Groundbirch, Bay Tree, and Bonanza formed the South Peace Grain Cleaning
Cooperative Association to construct a seed cleaning facility for member producers. With support from the City of Dawson Creek, local businesses, the BC and Alberta governments, and the founding members, the original facility was built and operated successfully until 1987.
There are eight full-time employees at the SPG and 100 plus on their membership list –serving both BC and Alberta seed producers.
“It is a very cool and pretty unique facility, says Ford adding the new separator will add to a more consistent seed for producers and growers.
SPG will be having a BBQ and open house on August 10 to highlight the new equipment and new products in their livestock feed lines.

Now recruiting new members for Canadian Food Policy Advisory Council
Members are needed on the Canadian Food Policy Advisory Council (the Council).
The Council was created to support greater collaboration in understanding complex and interconnected food systems issues from diverse perspectives to make meaningful and sustainable progress. It plays a key role in the Food Policy for
Canada, providing advice to the Minister of Agriculture and AgriFood on addressing challenges and opportunities across Canada’s food systems.
The membership of the Council is intended to reflect diversity of Canada’s food systems, and bring forward economic, health, social, and environmental perspectives to issues that impact, or are impacted
by food. To achieve this, we are seeking new members from across Canada’s food systems, including from the food and agriculture sector, academia, civil society, and Indigenous communities, with a focus on ensuring Indigenous and other underrpresented or marginalized groups have a voice on the Council.
Apply before 11:59 pm Pacific Time on August 17, 2023.
Do you have expertise and experience that would help improve Canada’s food systems? If so, apply today to become a member of the Canadian Food Policy Advisory Council.
The Canadian Food Policy Advisory Council is a volunteer advisory body, that brings together people with diverse perspectives and experiences to advise Canada’s Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food to help address food systems challenges and opportunities. We welcome

New funding expands support for Indigenous food sovereignty
More Indigenous communities will benefit from increased funding for food sovereignty, food security and Indigenous-led agriculture.
“Indigenous food sovereignty is important to the health of Indigenous Peoples and the province as a whole,” said Pam Alexis, Minister of Agriculture and Food. “By strengthening traditional Indigenous food systems, we are building a more resilient and equitable food ecosystem and reducing barriers so communities can have access to a more sustainable, secure and affordable food supply now and for future generations.”
The Indigenous Food Sovereignty Program will support more sustainable food production, community food security, and enhance participation in the agriculture and food sectors for Indigenous communities and businesses. Funding will support infrastructure such as greenhouses, irrigation systems, community gardens and food
storage.
Funding is also available to support a range of activities, such as boosting Indigenous-owned food and agriculture operations, community food security planning and projects, and climate change adaptation projects.
The new $30-million program will help Indigenous communities build and strengthen distinct local food systems, including the revitalization of traditional production, harvest and preservation practices. The use of traditional knowledge will support Indigenous farming in a changing climate, while offering more equitable participation in B.C.’s agriculture economy and reducing the disproportionate amount of food insecurity within Indigenous communities.
The program will be delivered by the New Relationship Trust (NRT), an independent non-profit dedicated to empowering First Nations communities.

Dawson Creek Citizens on Patrol looks for more members
Dawson Creek RCMP are pairing with Dawson Creek Citizens on Patrol – and are looking for new and returning faces.
The group has been ramping up meetings with the attempt to bring in more volunteers to the
fold and have more of a presence in Dawson Creek.
In addition to RCMP officers, Art Seidel was on hand to bring some history and context from the South Peace Crime Association perspective to a Wednesday Dec 14 meeting held at KPAC.
“The South Peace Crime Association provides liability insurance to groups working with us,” adds COP lead and former RCMP member John Vetter.
Citizens on Patrol is looking for a patrol coordinator to start getting some scheduled feet on the ground.
“It’s time to get the community
on board. We have been in operation for 30 plus years,” says Vetter.
Cst. Jeremiah Budd said it was important for COP and RCMP to work together – and build relationships with officers on duty.
“Number of volunteers are less important compared to time put in,” adds Budd. COP and the local RCMP are looking for a new cell phone number for immediate contact ability with the detachment.

canola drops its leaves before the larvae are mature, the developing larvae may feast straight on the seed pods, and even if the outer green layer of the pods are stripped and not completely eaten, loss of crops may still occur due to premature shattering.
But how are we able to put these nasty critters at bay?
There are only two bugs that are native
parasites of the Bertha Armyworm; the ichneumonid wasps and tachinid flies. Although these guys are able to kill the larvae, sometimes it may not be enough, and insecticide application is recommended when Bertha Armyworm larvae are more prominent in the crop and they consume more than the cost to control them.
This week’s pest of the week is the Bertha Armyworm!
Although I’m using an excitement mark, there’s nothing to be excited about when it comes to Bertha Army Worms. These annoying little creatures cause significant damage to crops such as flax, peas, potatoes, canola, mustard and alfalfa, and the most significant crop damage most commonly occurs between late July and early August.

feeding strategies, breeding forages that are more productive and profitable, and developing technologies for faster response to emerging diseases.
The goals of these funded activities contribute to the Government of Canada’s climate change mitigation and industry resilience priorities, while supporting the Government’s GHG reduction targets.
“Across the country, beef farmers and ranchers are incorporating new methods into their day-to-day routines to meet the global demand for Canadian beef. Today’s investment will help the sector continue to deliver results and maintain their solid reputation, while continuing to contribute to our environmental goals,” said Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food
“The Government of Canada recognizes the importance of Canadian beef. Today’s announcement will contribute to the continued success of the industry, while keeping it strong and resilient. The results from these innovation, research and technology activities will transform into real results on farms,” added Francis Drouin, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food

The beef and cattle industry is one of the largest in Canadian agriculture, with 11 million cattle and calves on 72,275 farms and ranches on January 1, 2022.
Canada is one of the largest exporters of livestock and red meat in the world, exporting approximately 50% of Canadian beef and cattle production each year.
In 2022, cattle and calf exports were valued at $1.4 billion, and beef exports were valued at $4.68 billion.
The industry contributes approximately $21.8 billion annually to Canada’s GDP while supporting 347,000 jobs directly and indirectly.
According to the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (CRSB), the GHG emissions of Canadian beef production have a total footprint of 11.4 kg CO2 equivalent, representing 2.4% of Canada’s overall emissions, less than half the world’s average.

Dawson Creek Veterinary Clinic
Equine Preventative Dental Care: Ensuring Your Horse’s LongTerm Health and Happiness
Dawson Creek Vet Clinic
As horse owners, we share a special bond with our majestic equine companions, and their well-being is always a top priority. While we may diligently attend to their overall health and exercise needs, there’s one crucial aspect that often goes unnoticed – equine dental care. Just like humans, horses require regular dental check-ups and preventative care to maintain healthy teeth and gums, which directly impacts their overall health and quality of life.
The Significance of Equine Dental Care
Horses are naturally herbivorous animals, designed to graze on fibrous vegetation, such as grass and hay, throughout the day. As they chew their food, their teeth experience natural wear and growth patterns that ensure efficient and proper mastication. However, domestication has brought changes to their diet and lifestyle. Many horses now have limited access to grazing and may be fed diets that differ from their natural diets. These changes can lead to dental problems such as uneven wear, sharp points, hooks, ramps, and overgrown teeth.
Inadequate dental care can cause discomfort, pain, and even severe health issues in horses. For example, if a horse’s teeth develop uneven wear patterns, it can lead to difficulty chewing and may result in weight loss or malnutrition. Overgrown teeth can create painful ulcers in the mouth, making it uncomfortable for the horse to eat and maintain a healthy body condition. Additionally, sharp edges can cause lacerations on the tongue and cheeks, which can be incredibly painful and interfere with the horse’s ability to concentrate on training or even cause behavioral issues. The roots of teeth can become infected and can spread into the sinus cavities causing malodorous nasal discharge. Regular dental examination can determine the integrity of tooth roots and potential treatment/extraction. Dental X-rays can also be performed to assess sinus disease and tooth integrity.
Routine Dental Examinations and Preventative Care
Large Animals: 250-782-1080
Small Animals: 250-782-5616 www.dcvet.ca
To avoid these potential problems, horse owners should establish a routine dental care program for their equine companions. This includes regular dental examinations by a qualified veterinarian. Just as you would visit a dentist for a dental check-up, horses should receive the same care from a professional. Ideally, dental check-ups should occur at least once every six to twelve months, depending on the horse’s age and dental history.
During a dental examination, the veterinarian will perform a comprehensive assessment of the horse’s mouth, teeth, and gums. They will look for any signs of abnormalities, such as uneven wear, overgrown teeth, sharp edges, or signs of dental disease. Equine veterinarians often use specialized equipment and lighting to get a clear view of the horse’s teeth.
If any dental issues are detected, we will perform a procedure known as dental floating. Dental floating involves the use of a specialized rasp or file to smooth out sharp edges, correct uneven wear, and address overgrown teeth. This procedure is generally painless and can significantly improve the horse’s comfort and eating efficiency.
Owner Involvement in Equine Dental Care
While routine dental check-ups by a veterinarian are crucial, horse owners can play an active role in maintaining their horse’s dental health as well. Here are some tips to help you ensure your horse’s teeth stay in top-notch condition:
1. Diet Management: Provide your horse with a diet that is high in fiber and low in sugar. This mimics their natural diet, encouraging proper chewing and promoting dental health. Avoid feeding large quantities of sugary treats, as they can lead to dental issues and other health problems.
2. Access to Grazing or Hay: If possible, allow your horse access to pasture grazing. The constant chewing of fibrous vegetation aids in maintaining proper dental wear. If grazing is not feasible, ensure your horse has access to high-quality hay, which also promotes proper tooth wear.
3. Regular Cleaning: Regularly clean your horse’s water troughs and feed buckets to prevent the build-up of bacteria that can cause dental problems and other health issues.
4. Observe Eating Habits: Keep an eye on your horse’s eating habits. If you notice any changes, such as dropping food or difficulty chewing, it might be a sign of dental discomfort.
5. Treat Behavioral Changes: Dental issues can lead to behavioral changes in horses. If you notice your horse becoming agitated, resisting the bit, or showing signs of discomfort during riding, dental problems could be a contributing factor.
Conclusion
Equine preventative dental care is a critical aspect of responsible horse ownership. Regular dental check-ups and preventative care can identify and address dental issues before they become serious, ensuring that your horse remains healthy, happy, and able to perform at their best. By working closely with a veterinarian who specializes in equine dentistry and following the simple tips mentioned above, you can promote your horse’s dental health and overall well-being, allowing you both to enjoy many years of cherished companionship.
Program helps new farmers find their land match
The BCLMP offers one-on-one support through the program’s five land matchers who work to connect farmers with land throughout the province. The supports help new and established farmers start and expand their farm operations and create more regional and sustainable farmland. The result is economic development and greater food security for British Columbians.
“Access to land is the No. 1 barrier facing new farmers today,” said Sara Dent, executive director, Young Agrarians. “With today’s land prices, it is essential that new and established
farmers can access affordable land to grow food for the future of our local food systems. We are glad to have the support of the Province in this important work of strengthening B.C.’s food security.”
The program is part of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food’s Grow BC initiative, which supports young farmers and food producers looking to begin or expand their agriculture business. By addressing challenges such as land access and business planning, the BCLMP seeks to increase the number of new farmers in the province, help grow existing farms and contribute to B.C.’s food security.
More B.C. farmland is being put back into production, providing increased food security for British Columbians, with more than 4,500 hectares (11,300 acres) leased by new and young farmers through the B.C. Land Matching Program (BCLMP).
“The next generation of B.C. farmers are going to play a pivotal role in the province’s food security,” said Pam Alexis, Minister of Agriculture and Food. “By helping to match them with affordable and productive farmland, we are supporting producers starting or growing their agricultural business while ensuring we have more fresh local food available to feed and nourish our communities.”
The program, delivered by the Young Agrarians resource network for farmers, has helped match 284 new farmers with land throughout B.C. with 54 matches made in the past year.
Farmers such as Jason Stashko and Krystyna Delahaye, who began their first farming venture in less-than-ideal soil, are now thriving at their Seed of Life Farm. The couple found it challenging to find affordable and suitable land in the Lower Mainland until they were matched through the BCLMP to 0.8 hectares (two acres) of fertile farmland in Surrey.
“When we sought to put down our farm roots, we were discouraged by the unavailability of land, rental costs and the various steps involved,” said Krystyna. “When we reached out to the BCLMP, we found help liaising with landholders, lease navigation and helpful advice all delivered with professional knowledge. They helped us begin our journey successfully and made us feel confident in starting Seed of Life Farm.”
Krystyna and Jason are now successfully growing fruit, vegetables, herbs and flowers at their farm. By supplying local restaurants, stores and farmers markets, they have fostered local partnerships and offer seasonal community-supported agriculture boxes.

BC works with partners to support agriculture
The Province is working in collaboration with partners in the agricultural community, as well as with other levels of government, to support B.C. farmers and ranchers as they face serious effects from wildfire and drought.
“Supporting our agriculture producers is top of mind for me and I have been in touch and continue to speak with farmers and ranchers about the challenges they are facing,” said Pam Alexis, Minister of Agriculture and Food. “Our staff are in regular contact with BC Dairy, the BC
GET0%
Cattlemen’s Association and the BC Agriculture Council, as well as farmers and ranchers who are on the ground and are working through these challenges in real time. We are collaborating on solutions and to expand supports. I want to assure people that we are working hard to ensure the agriculture community is supported and to our farmers and ranchers, I want you to know that we are here for you.”
Interim Payment limit from 50% to 75%; advance payments can be obtained in as few as 10 business days; and
a higher grain and oilseed crop writeoff level so the crops that have been written off can be used for livestock feed.
There is also a significant need for feed and many ranchers and producers are facing difficult decisions. Unfortunately, the feed shortage is not unique to British Columbian and is being felt throughout western Canada. The ministry is working closely with partners on the ground, such as the BC Cattleman’s Association and BC Dairy, to identify additional sources of feed. If any additional feed is secured, it will be distributed to producers.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food has existing programs and partnerships in place to support farmers and ranchers and is working with partners to add more supports. It is important for farmers and ranchers to know that a provincial state of emergency does not need to be declared in order for them to receive support, such as AgriRecovery, and through other assistance programs.
British Columbia has formally submitted a request to the federal government for AgriRecovery funding. AgriRecovery is a federalprovincial cost-sharing program that helps adversely affected farms get back into production. Most recently, AgriRecovery programs were successfully delivered in response to the wildfires and atmospheric river event in 2021.

“I have spoken with federal minister Bibeau to ensure she is aware of the gravity of the situation,” Alexis said. “We need the federal government’s support during this challenging time and I am continuing to advocate strongly for the agriculture community. Just as we’ve done with other recent challenges, we will get through this by working together.”

CONSIGNMENT
In addition to the proactive work B.C. has taken to support the AgriRecovery request, there are also existing funding programs that growers and producers can access, including AgriStability, which can help farmers offset unexpected income losses. The ministry is working closely with the federal government to get approval to implement the following changes to help support farmers, ranchers, and producers:
AgriStability Late Participation for farms and ranches that did not enrol in the program before the April 30, 2023, deadline;
an increase to the AgriStability
The Ministry of Agriculture and Food also has extensive programming targeted at helping farmers adapt to drought, wildfire and extreme heat conditions, as well as risk-management programs targeted to stabilize income. In the past year, the Province has further introduced programs such as the Extreme Weather Preparedness for Agriculture Program and Agriculture Water Infrastructure Program, as well as increased funding to the Beneficial Management Practices Program.
Farmers, ranchers and producers who need support are encouraged to contact their industry association or to call the AgriService BC line at 1 888 221-7141. Ministry of Agriculture and Food staff can help the agricultural community access existing programs. Regional agrologists are available to provide specialized assistance for those who require it, and ministry staff are being deployed to the most affected areas to listen directly to producers on their farms and take appropriate action.
Beefing up access to capital for livestock producers
Beef is Alberta’s biggest agri-food export and raising loan limits will ensure the province’s cattle producers are able to continue producing the world’s best beef.
Amendments to the Feeder Associations Guarantee Regulation give feeder association members more options to purchase and market livestock and to generate better cash flow for their operations.
The changes raise individual and joint membership loan limits, excluding advances, to $3 million from $2 million.
“Feeder associations are an essential part of Alberta’s livestock industry and are a proven way to support new entrants in primary agriculture. These amendments ensure thousands of producers across the province have access to the capital they need to keep
producing Alberta’s world-renowned beef.,” says RJ Sigurdson, Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation
Cattle prices have increased 25 per cent since the start of the year and are expected to keep rising. Alberta’s livestock producers are in greater need of easily accessible, low-interest capital backed by a government guarantee.
Made up of local livestock producers, feeder associations take in cattle and sheep and feed them to get them to market weight before shipping them for processing.
Alberta’s Feeder Associations Loan Guarantee Program helps local, producerrun cooperatives get competitive financing to
ensure they can continue being a player in the global market.
“These changes will help to ensure continued sustainable growth in Alberta’s livestock feeding sector, providing much-needed support to our existing feeder members while making this capital-intensive business more viable and accessible to new entrants and young farmers in the current market environment,” adds Philipp Lammerding, chair, Feeder Associations of Alberta Ltd.
These amendments follow last fall’s Feeder Associations Guarantee Program’s overall loan guarantee limit increase to $150 million.
BC and partners work to get hay to farmers
The Ministry of Agriculture and Food is working with partners to support B.C. farmers and ranchers who are facing challenges due to the current shortage of hay and feed across Western Canada.
“We are in daily communication with producers impacted by drought, and the main issue we are hearing right now is that some are already having to use their fall and winter feed,” said Pam Alexis, Minister of Agriculture and Food. “We are listening to what farmers and ranchers need most, and in collaboration with BC Cattlemen’s and other partners, we are taking action to help producers on the ground find all available sources of hay for their animals.”
To help farmers and producers get hay and feed, the ministry is funding a new Access to Feed program that will be delivered in partnership with the BC Cattlemen’s Association (BCCA). Through this program, the BCCA will match sellers of hay and feed domestically across Canada and internationally with farmers and producers.
“The agriculture sector is being challenged by this year’s severe drought, which is causing producers to make very difficult decisions,” said Kevin Boon, rancher and general manager, BC Cattlemen’s Association. “For the livestock sector, our biggest concerns are the lack of feed and the welfare of our animals. This is why we’re working together with government on programs that make sense for farmers and ranchers so they can get access to what meets their individual needs and then be able to make the right decisions for the management of their operations. These programs have the opportunity to make a difference for B.C.’s agricultural producers now and in the future.”
Many farmers and ranchers have specific needs when it comes to the type of feed their animals require. The BCCA will collaborate with industry partners and local producers to get the right type of feed to those in need as quickly as possible. Information about sources of feed will be made readily available and BCCA will help to co-ordinate and support feed requests from
the other livestock sectors and smaller producers.
“Based on the impacts of the droughts and wildfires B.C. is facing, we know dairy producers in many regions of the province are taking inventory and considering the need to purchase feed,” said Jeremy Dunn, general manager, BC Dairy Association. “We are grateful that the ministry is supporting an Access to Feed program, in conjunction with our colleagues at the BC Cattlemen’s Association. We look forward to sharing details of this program with our membership.”
The governments of Canada and B.C. are working together to strengthen existing support programs to help farmers and ranchers with the cost of hay and feed, which is currently higher than usual due to ongoing drought conditions throughout Western Canada. Immediate supports are available through the federalprovincial AgriStability program to help producers with drought or wildfire-related income declines.
“Help is available for B.C. farmers and ranchers impacted by wildfire and drought through AgriStability,” said Marie-Claude Bibeau, federal Minister of Agriculture and Food. “Those who are not yet participating in the program can still do so to receive financial assistance. The Government of Canada will continue to work closely with the Province to ensure farmers have the support they need to get back to what they do best – producing high-quality food for Canadians.”
Through AgriStability, participants will be contacted about receiving targeted advance payments, starting Friday, July 28, 2023. Approved payments can be in the hands of producers within 10 business days and can help provide the cashflow to cover necessary expenses, including the increased cost of feed and hay.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Food, in collaboration with the federal government, has also acted to ensure that producers who did not enrol in AgriStability by the April 30, 2023, deadline are still eligible for late participation and can receive financial assistance. Producers must have declared farm income for tax purposes and have an income decline to be eligible to enrol in AgriStability.
Additionally, changes to crop insurance have been approved so producers are now able to write off grain and oilseed crops that are being converted into livestock feed in response to the drought conditions.
The ministry continues to offer regional and specialized assistance to any producers in need and those looking for support can call the AgriService BC line at 1 888 221-7141.
B.C. is currently facing a severe drought situation with more than two-thirds of B.C.’s water basins at Drought Level 4 or Drought Level 5. As drought conditions worsen, with unprecedented levels of drought seen in British Columbia this early in the season, people and businesses are urged to prioritize water conservation.
Quick Facts:
The Province is providing $150,000 to the BC Cattlemen’s Association to support the Access to Feed program.
BCCA is engaging with the BC Grain Producers, BC Dairy Association, BC Forage Council and the BC Horse Council to search out feed domestically and internationally.
To be eligible for all AgriStability programming, producers must have declared farm income for tax purposes and have an income decline over the past year.

Ministers expressed their concerns regarding the extreme weather situations currently impacting producers across the country, including drought and wildfires. Ministers committed to working together expeditiously to share data and complete AgriRecovery assessments. Ministers also committed to ensuring that producers have access to a full suite of Business Risk Management (BRM) programs that are timely and reliable. In view of this, Ministers committed to continuous improvement of BRM programs to support farmers and ranchers. In order to ensure timeliness, simplicity and predictability of AgriStability, Ministers agreed to the implementation of an optional new model.

Ministers acknowledged the need for continued strong collaboration between federal, provincial, and territorial governments as well as industry on the development of integrated disease prevention, surveillance and management plans and cost-shared response programming. Ministers recognized the importance of increasing Canada’s readiness and capacity to respond to potential disease outbreaks and re-affirmed their commitment to closely collaborate on this issue, and to engage with key players across the value chain by the
AHC is a national organization that provides a collaborative space for government and industry partners to achieve animal health and welfare priorities, while providing expertise in areas such as emergency preparedness, emerging diseases, animal health surveillance, and updating the codes of practice for the care and handling of farm animals. Ministers unanimously endorsed AHC’s proposed role in emergency preparedness and indicated their support for continued investment and its operations. Ministers support the importance of traceability measures and stated the necessity of ensuring that measures are designed to reflect operational realities.
Ministers committed to continuing to work with stakeholders to respond to the challenge of climate change and extreme weather events, such as drought and wildfires, and to meet the growing demands for healthy, sustainable and nutritious food. The federal government presented on the Sustainable Agriculture Strategy and provinces and territories shared their current strategies and initiatives. two leading farmer-directed organizations, Alberta Barley and the Alberta Wheat Commission (AWC) are excited to announce the name and logo of their merged commission, Alberta Grains. The new commission, Alberta Grains, will begin operating in place of the Alberta Wheat and Barley Commissions on August 1, 2023.
Alberta Grains will build on the strengths of both organizations to create a unified voice for the province’s 18,000 wheat and barley farmers. With a focus on economic sustainability, innovation and growth, Alberta Grains will leverage the combined resources, knowledge and experience to deliver unparalleled value to its membership.
We are thrilled to join the forces of Alberta Barley and AWC to create Alberta Grains,” said Greg Sears, chair of AWC. “Our new organization will be focused on delivering value to our farmers and other stakeholders while contributing to the growth and sustainability of the grain industry in Alberta.”

The new logo of Alberta Grains is a symbol of the organization’s commitment and unified strength to the province’s crop sector. The logo is designed to represent the grains that are grown in the
province, with a modern and clean design that reflects the organization’s vision of strength and ‘better together’ mantra.
“Both boards are proud of the collaboration and focus over the past two years and this announcement is an exciting step forward for our organizations and the agricultural sector in Alberta,” said Tara Sawyer, Alberta Barley chair. “Our hope is that through the new commission we will continue to add value and further fiscal and operational efficiencies.”
The commissions embarked on this process in 2017 by implementing a shared management structure, consulting with a farmer subcommittee, and engaging the province’s wheat and barley farmers in a dialogue through formal consultations. In October 2022, through two plebiscites, Alberta wheat and barley farmers voted overwhelmingly in favour of amalgamating the commissions.
The new commission invites all stakeholders to visit the information hub AlbertaGrains. com for key contacts, new branding information and commission operational changes including applications for new grain dealer licences.

CMTA Goes Live (At the Great Outdoors Expo)
Clothes, check. Tent, mattress, sleeping bag, and camp chair, check, check, check aaannnddd check. Banners, business cards, cameras, more checks. After spending hours trying to recall how to pack everything needed to run a tradeshow booth and bumbling around my office trying to remember where I had put everything needed for my trip to the first tradeshow of the season, I managed to get my bike loaded up. I was ready to rock.
After a beautiful ride East from Winnipeg, with a detour thrown in so I could have some fun riding the 307, a provincial road that runs through North Whiteshell provincial park I arrived at my cabin at the gorgeous Barrier Bay Resort – my home for the
next 4 days and jumping off point to ensure I got a spectacular ride every day. DJ and Erica Seales, the owners of Barrier Bay resort are amazing people and my cabin was downright luxurious. Usually when I do tours I moto camp. I love moto camping, and I love taking clients moto camping, but I have to say every now and then it’s nice to feel pampered! Sidebar, yes this is definitely a plug for Barrier Bay. It’s a great place to stay, to use as a jumping off point to moto adventures in Eastern Manitoba and it’s definitely motorcycle friendly…. If only there were some sort of motorcycle friendly designation…. Hmmmm….
Setting up the Epic Rides Moto Tours booth, preparing my presentations for the weekend and ensuring CMTA was well represented took a lot of work but I knew it was going to be well worth it. Day 1 of the show started strong, and I had multiple opportunities to spread the gospel according to CMTA – promoting Canada as a Tourism Destination for Motorcyclists. In my case, I’m not only passionate about riding but I have a passion for my
province of Manitoba and I want to share her hidden gems with the rest of Canada and the world.
After a successful first day where I was able to speak with many local businesses about CMTA, handing out business cards and spreading the good word about the Association it was time to head back down the 307 to Barrier Bay for a good night sleep before round 2.
Sunday, started off slowly (as these types of events often do… at least here in Manitoba), but traffic picked up, and I had a few riders stop by the booth for a visit, who had ridden up from Winnipeg to meet the idiot with the YouTube channel (Moi) that liked to rant and rave about Manitoba’s highways department while sharing routes throughout the province. They were excited about CMTA, and from the people and businesses I spoke to throughout the weekend you can see the need for an association like ours.
There’s a real opportunity here for us. As riders, tour operators and small businesses I think we often look South or over into Europe and see how popular
motorcycle tourism is and it doesn’t see possible to build that buzz here in Canada. I can tell you that there is a hunger and willingness by other businesses to see motorcycle tourism flourish here, and as CMTA grows and builds lasting partnerships we are going to see a shift. I believe that sooner rather than later Canada will be seen as a true destination hot spot for motorcycle tourism, but we need your help. If you’re not a member, join us. If you own a business, join us. We motorcyclists are as fiercely loyal as we are adventurous and if you open your doors to us, we’ll be back time and time again to support you.

NLC rodeo seeks support
The Northern Lights College Foundation has requested financial support from the Peace River Regional District in the amount of $5,000.
The funds would be used to support the 2023 NLC intercollegiate rodeo, which runs this fall from September 30 to October 1. It’s the second year the event has been held, and will take place at the Lakota Agriplex in Dawson Creek.
The PRRD has previously supported the rodeo, authorizing fair share grant funding for $5,000 from Electoral Area D and $2,500 from Electoral Area E for a total of
7,500. According PRRD agendas, the rodeo cost $124,885.87 to host.
The foundation is a registered non-profit society and the PRRD has also helped the college by funding healthcare scholarship programs. The grant request is expected to be discussed and voted on by PRRD directors this week at their August 3 Rural Budgets Administration Committee meeting.

Food Day Canada is on the way
Food Day Canada is a unique opportunity for all Canadians to join in one massive celebration in praise of food and all the good people who make it happen from farms to forks. Everyone is invited to join in, to shop, cook, dine and celebrate Canadian.
This year Food Day Canada is celebrating 20 years of shining a light on Canadian cuisine on August 5.
Food Day Canada is a grassroots movement that comes to life with thousands of individuals and partners from coast to coast to coast each year. It’s free and inclusive, and meant for all who believe in the vision to engage and inspire everyone to shop, cook & dine Canadian.
Food Day Canada was originally created as the World’s Longest Barbecue, by Anita Stewart, her family and a number of pioneering supporters, in an effort to show support for Canada’s beef farmers and ranchers during BSE. The mission to actively promote the growth and study of our distinctively Canadian food culture is evident in the media, social media and event presence that helps elevate the conversations around #FoodDayCanada.

Cattle transport in Canada is a critical element for beef production and marketing. Nearly all beef cattle are transported several times in their lives. Livestock transport has many components from start to finish and several things can impact animal health and well-being, and consequently meat and carcass quality. Using best practices for transport,
including pre- and post-transport handling, can improve animal health and welfare in all parts of the beef value chain, from cowcalf through to feedlot operators, packers, and retail sectors.
Good transport outcomes require teamwork and communication between farmers, transport drivers, inspectors, and the final destination.
