Growing Winter Cereals over Two Years in the
By Buthaina Al-Maqtari By Buthaina Al-MaqtariOats, Wheat, Barley, and Triticale are common spring cereals grown for feed. Seeding winter cereals with spring cereals can allow for potentially two harvests; the late summer harvest of both crops for greenfeed or silage or grazing as an annual pasture and the regrowth of the winter cereals for fall grazing to extend the grazing season. Not only do these mixtures have the potential to add grazing days to the end of the growing season, but they also provide cover and a living root in the soil over the winter. Furthermore, the winter cereals can provide in the following year, interesting options such as spring grazing or grain harvest after they overwinter. This was the case with the plots seeded at Fairview Research Farm in 2021. As the early wet spring of 2022 conditions delayed the cultivation and seeding of spring cereals, the winter cereals that were established in the previous season were ready to begin growth as soon as the temperature started rising. By the time spring seeding started, the regrowth of these plots were outstanding and almost ready to be used for forage.

Winter/Spring
Project Timeline:
Project Timeline:
The plots were seeded on May 25, 2021 (year 1) as a mixture of winter and spring cereals at 50% of their recommended seeding rates. The mixes consisted of forage-type spring Barley, Oats or Triticale seeded with winter wheat (AAC Wildfire), winter triticale (Bobcat, Luoma and Metzger) or Fall Rye (Prima) for a total of 18 mixes. These mixes were then compared to spring cereals monocrops (CDC Austenson Barley, CDC Baler Oats, Taza Triticale) for yield and forage quality. The soil at the research farm had organic matter of 6.6%, pH of 6.1, and electric conductivity of 0.36 ds/m. Fertilizer was applied based on the soil test recommendation, and plots were seeded at depth of 1” with a disc-type opener on 23 cm row spacing. In-crop spraying was done with Prestigue XL. Forage harvest was done in August 2021 at the appropriate growth stage for silage: Milk stage for mixtures with Oats, soft dough stage for mixtures with barley, and late milk stage for mixtures with spring triticale.
Year 1 - as a reminder, year 1 was very dry with extended periods of lack of rainfall and high day/night temperatures. All winter cereals seeded with CDC Austenson produced higher yields than CDC Austenson monoculture (2092 lbs/ acre) (Figure 1). CDC Austenson seeded with Luoma triticale had the highest forage yield (3516 lbs/acre) compared to all mixtures and monocrops. Second to that is Oats Monocrop (3217 lbs/acre) then Oats and Fall Rye mixture (3149 lbs/acre).
Option 1 - forage production (for spring utilization). Both prima fall rye and wildfire winter wheat produced the higher forage dry matter yield of 9787 and 8672 lbs/acre, respectively, compared to <8600 lbs/acre for other winter cereals (Figure 2). The forage dry matter yield from winter cereal in spring of year 2 was higher than those of year 1 (2021) harvest of spring and winter mixtures. However, unlike the 2021 forage, only wildfire winter wheat was able to meet the protein requirement of 11% for lactating mature beef cows. The protein requirement of 12-14% CP for growing and finishing calves couldn’t be met by any of the winter cereals harvested in 2022 (Table 2) probably due to a slight delay in harvesting and lack of any additional fertilizer application in the second year. Efforts will be made to investigate this further in the next couple of years.

Option 2 - grain production in the fall. Instead of utilizing the forage in the spring, the winter cereals can be allowed to grow for grain production. The grain yield (bu/acre) from the winter cereal was higher for Prima Fall Rye that was seeded as mixture with Oats or Barley (the previous year) at 73 and 72 bu/ acre, followed by wildfire winter wheat seeded as mixture with Taza triticale (68 bu/acre) [Figure 3]

The contribution margin, the amount by which revenue exceeded costs, was positive for all spring winter cereal mixes. This is because of the profit gained from harvesting the regrowth without any considerable inputs. This indicates that even when spring cereal monocultures yielded more than mixes, it was more profitable to seed spring-winter mixes for the second year for either forage or grain production. A more detailed economic analysis will be available in the future to help guide adoption and integration of the winter/spring cereal mixed production systems.

Seeding winter cereal as an intercrop with spring cereals has the potential to extend grazing season, improve soil health and forage quality and also give a bonus in additional forage and or grain the following year. Winter cereals are able to take advantage of early spring moisture resulting in higher yield than spring cereals. Results from this study show that seeding CDC Austenson Barley with winter cereal had a yield advantage over seeding cereal monocrops, while also producing sufficient protein, TDN, NEM, NEG, calcium, and potassium for beef cattle production in all life stages.

Putting it all together!
Intercropping winter cereals with spring cereals is potentially an opportunity to improve farm profit margins. With seeding once, the average greenfeed production for spring winter cereal mixes in year 1 was 2000 lbs/acre, and in year 2, the spring winter cereals produced about 7600 lbs/acre in forage and 60 bu/ acre in grain. This indicates the potential to improve farm profits.

The presence of winter cereals in the mixtures appeared to improve the forage total digestible nutrients (energy) slightly (Table 1). The protein and energy percentages, which are the most important nutritional considerations in beef cattle production in cold climates, exceeded the suggested requirements for mature beef cattle and were mostly well within the required levels for growing and finishing calves in all mixes and monocultures. In some mixes, the crude

Each week has a dedicated recording & printable worksheet for you to follow along.
Along with these sessions, you’ll have access to my entire clinic curriculum - Stages 1-4 and my private online community.
Or how about 7 magnificent patterns?
Are you struggling to get the results you want with your horse? Many horse owners can relate to this, as it is common for horses to develop bad habits or become unresponsive.
Over the last thirty years of working with horses, I’ve developed my stages program that has helped thousands of people create healthier, more trusting relationships with their horses. My program starts with seven groundwork exercises that teach both you and your horse the fundamentals of effective communication – ultimately improving behavior and overall well-being.
Right now I am offering an exclusive miniclinic that includes:
A demonstration of the 7 patterns
A self-assessment to help you gauge your current relationship with your horse
An in-depth look at the theory and practice behind the first pattern: confidence building
I’ve seen incredible results when people follow my stages program. I’ve seen horses become more sound-minded and predictable. This is all due to the use of consistency and communication that’s at the foundation of the program.
I hope you’ll consider joining me in my 7 Patterns Mini Clinic, this is one of the many parts of my stages program that I’ve used to help others reach their horsemanship goals.
