Lakeview 4-H Multi Club Achievement Day
I am so grateful for the people who volunteered to help through the 4-H year and made Achievement Day possible. Because of our volunteers and sponsors our Lakeview 4-H Multi Club was able to have judges, awards, food, and a venue for our show and sale.
I felt relief when I got help in the arena too. It’s always good to have a stronger person to help you out. Thank you all of our experienced members for willing to lend a helping hand. I am so so grateful for the people who made it possible for me and other members to get our moment to show off all our hard work before selling our projects.

Big thank you to our amazing buyers too. In 4-H we have our first meeting where we decided what projects we want to do like market lamp or market steer or prospect heifer. There are various other non animal projects available too. We just need three members and one leader to
make projects possible. We have monthly meetings starting at 6:30 PM and ending between 7:30 and 8:30 PM. You have at least attend 70% of the meetings each 4-H year. Members have an opportunity to attend 4-H summer and winter camps throughout the year. Every 4-H year there are two big events: pre Achievement Day and Achievement day. Pre Achievement day is when you get your projects ready for Achievement Day. You also learn tips and tricks on how to best represent your project and yourself. Achievement Day is the big day where you will show and sell your projects. This is where all your hard work and dedication has its moment in the spotlight. So if this sounds like an opportunity that interests you, you are more than welcome to join our first meeting of the year on September 20th 2023 @ 6:30 PM, meet at teepee creek Hall. Can not wait to see the New and returning members and leaders this year.
Signing off Seth Jans

The Alberta crop report
The Alberta Crop Report provides timely provincial and regional summaries of crop production in Alberta during the crop season, and is used by industry and other stakeholders for various purposes, including drought monitoring and forecasting of production insurance payments. The report is also used to validate some of the Alberta crop estimates generated by Statistics Canada. Data for the
report is collected through regular surveys on moisture and crop conditions, progress of seeding and harvesting, insect and disease situation, yield potential and crop quality, etc., along with information from other sources. Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation (AGI) has delivered the Alberta Crop Reporting Program to clients since 1940.

Supporting on-farm agroecosystems innovation led by Peace Region Living Lab
Peace Region Living Lab strengthens its on-farm innovation and research activities and knowledge, sharing events in the Peace Region with the support of a financial contribution from food and agriculture company, Cargill.
As a key connector of the food system, Cargill has the unique ability to drive sustainable impact at scale - from farm to fork, working with farmers and partners each step of the way. To feed a growing global population, partnership with farmers is critical and programs like Peace Region Living Lab does just that, providing farmers the opportunity to pilot sustainable agriculture practices, share insights on soil health measurements, and a forum to discuss with others.
The Peace Region Living Lab (PRLL) is part of a federal initiative and network of living labs across Canada, which uses a producer centred approach to agricultural innovation. The program brings together farmers and ranchers with scientists and commodity groups to co-develop and test innovative practices and technologies focused on mitigating and adapting to climate change by sequestering carbon and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Other
environmental co-benefits include protecting soil and water quality and maximizing biodiversity in agricultural landscapes. Funding for this project has been provided in part by Agriculture and AgriFood Canada (AAFC) through the Agricultural Climate Solutions –Living Labs program.
The PRLL is unique in that it encompasses the BC and Alberta Peace region, making it the only interprovincial living lab in AAFC’s network. The Peace Region Forage Seed Association is the lead organization of the PRLL, which also includes eight other Peace Region producer groups: Peace River Forage Association of BC, BC Grain Producers Association, Fourth Sister Farm, North Peace Applied Research Association, Mackenzie Applied Research Association, SARDA Ag Research, the Peace Country Beef & Forage Association, and the Peace Region Food Action Hub & Agricultural Extension Institute.
Cargill and PRLL believe that farmers are at the heart of the food supply chain, and their experiences and learnings are critical. This is why peer-topeer sharing of sustainable and
regenerative agricultural practices is a large part of this program. Farmers and ranchers need to know that new practices can work on their land given their unique climate and ecosystems. On-farm experimentation carries risks, and agricultural earning margins are narrow with little room for error. Being able to see practices applied is a key step in supporting farmers and ranchers who wish to adopt proven practices. The 57 farmers and ranchers partnering with the PRLL have made a commitment
to sharing their experience of applying, testing and improving beneficial management practices on their operations through onfarm tours and workshops, so others can see a practice firsthand to facilitate further adoption of these practices.

BC increases food security, agricultural resiliency during emergencies
The Province is supporting B.C.’s farmers, communities and First Nations with a new fund to help with increased planning and preparation for agricultural emergencies, while strengthening food security for British Columbians.
“We continue to see the impacts of a changing climate on our agriculture community, and we are proactively helping farmers adapt and prepare for events like drought, wildfire, flood and extreme weather that are becoming far too frequent in B.C.,” said Pam Alexis, Minister of Agriculture and Food. “Being able to feed British Columbians is tied to our communities’ ability to be prepared and resilient to emergencies. This investment focusses on how best to plan and prepare for future emergencies so that we’re supporting B.C.’s food producers and our overall food security.”
With as much as $20 million available, the new Food Security Emergency Planning and Preparedness Fund will support the purchase, upgrading and installation of equipment and infrastructure by those who have a direct role in preparing and responding to agricultural emergencies, including farmers, local governments, First Nations, industry associations and other service providers.
The fund will also help with emergency response training, emergency planning, and developing the tools and procedures necessary to respond to and manage agricultural emergencies.
regional plans for livestock relocation in the event of large-scale wildfires or floods; local authority and First Nation planning to support agricultural producers during emergency events; and development of agriculture industry associations emergency response plans.
“Farmers and ranchers are stewards of the land and are on the front lines, facing the consequences of climate change,” said Jennifer Woike, president, BC Agriculture Council. “This historic investment in the Food Security Emergency Planning and Preparedness Fund will allow agricultural producers to do more of what they are already doing to protect the resiliency of our province’s food systems, even in the face of wildfires, droughts and more.”

Cow inventories – Are we still liquidating
anticipated value of bred heifers. Is there an opportunity in 2024 to make money on bred heifers if calf prices hold? Feed costs also factor into the decision. If resources are available, producers can afford to be more selective about which cows to keep.”
International markets also influence producer decisions. Like Canada, the U.S. calf market was strong throughout summer, and supplies are tight. U.S. utility cow prices remain near their highs of the year. U.S. beef cow slaughter was 2.16 million head year to date (January through August 2023), down 13.%.
“Demand for trimmings is supporting cull values,” points out Boyda. “Drought impacts on U.S. southern plains is anticipated to decrease the demand for breeding females and further limit herd expansion. Rabobank has forecast beef production to decline in the third quarter of 2023 but return to former 2022 levels by fourth quarter.”

“With tighter supplies in the future, cattle prices are expected to remain strong,” says Ann Boyda, provincial livestock market analyst with the Alberta government.
Total July 1 cattle inventory on Alberta beef operations of 5.8 million head is estimated to be down 2.5% from last year, a continued slide from the previous 1.5% decrease reported for July 1, 2021. July 1 inventory of calves under one year of age reveal comparable trends, down 5.2% from 2022, following a 3.4% decrease from 2021.
“What do these trends mean for the cattle business? Cattle producers are known for taking a long-term view of their business. Decisions around cow culling are tough,” says Boyda.
As of the week ending September 2, 2023, the Canadian Beef Grading Agency reported year to date total cattle slaughter in federally inspected plants for Western Canada of 1.749
million head, down 5% from the same period in 2022. However, cow slaughter for Western Canada of 241,731 head was 2% higher and heifer slaughter was 6% lower than the same period in 2022.
According to Statistics Canada, the number of beef cows on Alberta cow-calf operations dropped only 0.4% from July 1, 2022, whereas heifers retained for beef replacement declined by 1.3%.
“Beef cow longevity can be a major factor affecting costs and the productive life is a consideration in dry conditions,” explains Boyda. “Greater longevity can allow producers to retain fewer replacement heifers. Cows between 4 and 8 years of age typically have repaid their development costs and can contribute to revenue, especially considering higher calf prices. These decisions are more critical in times of dry conditions and high feeder prices.

Why should we feed test?
Avoid sneaky production problems, such as poor gains or reduced conception caused by mineral or nutrient deficiencies or excesses;
Prevent or identify potentially devastating problems due to toxicity from mycotoxins, nitrates, sulfates, or other minerals or nutrients;
Develop appropriate rations that meet the nutritional needs of their beef cattle;
Identify nutritional gaps that may require supplementation;
Economize feeding, and possibly make use of opportunities to include diverse ingredients;
Accurately price feed for buying or selling.
t’s critical to collect a feed sample that is representative of the feed ingredients that you are testing. Any feed type that will be used to feed beef cattle can and should be analysed, including baled forages and straw, by-products, silage, baleage, grain, swath grazing, cover crops, and corn.
Feed quality will change as the feeding season progresses. Samples should be taken as close to feeding or selling as possible, while leaving
enough time for the results to come back from the lab.
For baled products, use a forage probe to obtain a minimum of twenty cores for each sample you wish to submit. Sample square and round bales 12-15” deep and stacks or chopped hay 18” deep. Round bales should be sampled from the side (round end) and squares should be sampled at the end. Separate your forage inventory into lots with similar characteristics – same field, same maturity at cutting, same plant composition, etc. Hand grab samples will not be representative enough to give accurate results.
Some counties, rural municipalities, applied research associations, and forage testing labs also have probes for rent. Forage probes can be purchased from farm supply stores and range in price from about $100 to upwards of $500 for fancier drill driven models. Producers can construct their own forage probes but should ensure the diameter is between 3/8” to 3/4”. The tip should not be angled, and needs to be kept sharp regardless of whether it is serrated or not. The probe should not be longer than 24 inches.

“A look at weekly average feeder prices for 550-pound and 850-pound feeder cattle indicates that from January to September 1, 2023 (yearto-date), prices were 44% and 40% higher than the same period in 2022, respectively,” says Ann Boyda, provincial livestock market analyst with the Alberta government. “Although feeder calf prices were higher, variance in pricing was greater than that of the same period last year.”
Regionally, for the first half of 2023, prices for 550-pound feeder calves were slightly higher in the south at $336.25/hundredweight (cwt) as compared to the central and north regions ($329.03/cwt and $328.20/cwt, respectively).
“What factors have contributed to this strength, and can they be sustained? Answers to this question rely on supply and demand factors,” explains Boyda. “Generally, feeder supply is dependent on what is happening in the breeding herd and calf crop, but can also be influenced by weather, price expectations and seasonality. Demand falls back to economic performance in the sectors. Prices of feeder cattle are typically bid up if feeding operations are profitable.”
Statistics Canada reported the number of calves born in Alberta rising from 1.685 million head in 2018 to 1.77 million head in 2021 but declining to 1.76 million head in 2022. January to July 2023 data suggests a further decline of 4.1% over the same period in 2022. Producers reduced their herds and subsequent production in response to the dry conditions. As of July 1, 2023, beef cow inventory was steady and heifer replacement dropped by 3.5% from July 1, 2022.

Barry Yaremcio on Bulls - Grazing Stubble Field
With independent nutrition consultant
BARRY YAREMCIO
With forages in short supply and high priced; anything that can extend the grazing season and use of home-grown feeds reduces winter feeding costs.
Stubble fields as a feed resource can have variable quality. Straw is fairly constant, but chaff quality changes. It depends on the amount of grain and weed seeds that were thrown over by the combine, amount of crop re-growth since harvest, and crop type that was harvested.
Wheat, rye, and triticale straw typically have the lowest protein at 4% and energy at 40% TDN. Barley straw tends to be better with 4 to 5% protein and 42 to 45% TDN, and oats can be better quality with 4.5 to 5.5% protein and 44 to 47% TDN.
Pea straw is one of the best when it comes to protein, usually 2 to 3% higher than the cereal straws but has the same energy content as barley or oat straw. Canola straw is typically not used
for grazing, but is suitable as well. A 2:1 mineral in many cases does not supply enough calcium and magnesium. A 3:1 or 4:1 mineral may be required.
Low quality limits grazing to pregnant dry cows unless supplemental hay, silage, or grain is provided. A pregnant cow in mid pregnancy requires 55% TDN and 7% protein.
If protein is not adequate, feed intake can be reduced because it can take longer for the feed to pass through the digestive system. A lack of energy will result in the cow mobilizing fat to meet energy demands and a loss of body condition. A cow that loses weight prior to winter increases maintenance energy requirements and results in more feed required to keep warm.
Supplementing extra energy and protein can be done in a number of different ways. When comparing options, three things must be considered:
1. Is it cost effective?
2. Does the supplement meet the nutritional requirements of the
animals?
3. Is it convenient to use?
There are many different products available to use as supplements. Some are free choice and others can be limit fed once every 3 days. Use what works for your operation.
For more information on grazing stubble fields as an option for your cows, contact Barry at 403-7416022 or bjyaremcio@gmail.com

Pulse Canada Fall Update
As harvest presses on, pulse growers across Canada are putting in the hours necessary to get their crop ready for export to over 140 markets around the world. And while the focus on the farm is getting the crop in the bin, staff at Pulse Canada are focused on several priorities to help advance the growth of the sector and drive value back through to the farm gate.
There is no question conditions have been difficult in regions across the country. In addition to unpredictable weather and
extreme lack of moisture, pulse growers have also had to navigate new criteria for applying lambdacyhalothrin. After a re-evaluation decision from the PMRA, the latest label for lambda-cyhalothrin indicates that crops treated with lambda-cyhalothrin cannot be used as livestock feed in Canada. As any crop entering the grain handling system is eligible for use as livestock feed, this poses a risk of becoming an off-label use. To provide growers with the tools needed to navigate this landscape, Pulse Canada once again teamed up with Cereals
Worryabouttheweather, notyourwarranty.
Canada and the Canola Council of Canada to promote the Keep it Clean Program. In addition to digital and print communications, a webinar was held in advance of harvest to update growers and agronomists on the latest tips and tools to protect the marketability of Canada’s canola, cereal and pulse crops. As exports ramp up, ensuring our crop meets the requirements and needs of key customers worldwide remains a top priority.
attention must now be focused on the outstanding agreements with workers at ports and rail lines across Canada. Pulse Canada continues to advocate in Ottawa for the government to take a more proactive stance on facilitating agreements far before the notion of a strike becomes a reality. Our message is that Canada’s economy is far too important to be held hostage by a single component of the value chain.

Earlier this summer, the federal government brought into force an 18-month pilot program to reintroduce extended interswitching for western Canadian shippers. Pulse Canada played a key role in advocating for this policy and ensuring it made its way through the legislative process. Expanding access to competitive rail services means Canadian shippers will have the option to achieve efficiencies, reduce costs, and enhance connectivity through market competition. This improvement is vital for grain farmers and businesses of all sizes, enabling them to deliver their products and services more effectively to Canadian and international customers.
The temporary nature of extended interswitching has raised concerns among pulse crop producers. The uncertainty surrounding its future inhibits long-term planning and investment, which are crucial for the growth and stability of the industry. Pulse Canada’s advocacy for making extended interswitching permanent aligns with its commitment to fostering a competitive and efficient transportation network that benefits all stakeholders.
Of course, to maintain Canada’s reputation as a reliable shipper of grain, the entire supply chain must be firing on all cylinders. The strike that plagued western ports this July was a prime example of how vulnerable the system can be. It is estimated that each day the ports were closed, it would take an additional week to clear the backlog. While it is positive an agreement was reached,
At the time of writing this article, free trade with India remains a file of significant importance to the future success of Canada’s pulse industry. The pursuit of a comprehensive Canada-India free-trade agreement that ensures meaningful access for pulse crops would not only expand market opportunities for Canadian pulse producers but also meet the growing demand for plant-based protein in India’s diet.
However, the negotiations for such an agreement must go beyond mere rhetoric. Pulse Canada has worked diligently to emphasize the significance of a fulsome deal that addresses existing trade barriers and opens doors for Canadian pulses in the Indian market. Tariff reductions, regulatory alignment, and measures to ensure fairtrade practices are all essential components of a successful agreement. By advocating for a balanced and mutually beneficial deal, Pulse Canada strives to create a platform for long-term growth and collaboration between our two nations.
Pulse growers can expect updates on these and other issues as the fall session of Parliament progresses. If you have any questions on any of the initiatives we undertake on your behalf, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me at gnorthey@ pulsecanada.com. Feeder cattle prices are strong
“A look at weekly average feeder prices for 550-pound and 850-pound feeder cattle indicates that from January to September 1, 2023 (year-to-date), prices were 44% and 40% higher than the same period in 2022, respectively,” says Ann Boyda, provincial livestock market analyst with the Alberta government.
Demand falls back to economic performance in
the sectors.
“Feeder prices are also dependent on the expected slaughter cattle price and the anticipated cost of gain. The Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) nearby futures contract prices adjusted by the Canadian exchange rate and basis, provide a good estimate of expected slaughter prices.”
“Cost of gain can be variable,” explains Boyda. “Feed costs are the most important component. The fall of 2022 witnessed
dramatic increases in feed barley prices, but 2023 has seen some moderation.”
“In addition, it is recognized that weather can be the greatest factor in price swings. Current drier conditions in parts of the province have some cow-calf producers marketing some of the yearling crop sooner. Higher feeder prices are also pulling more stock,” says Boyda.

The value of straw
“It is difficult to place a value on the organic matter and erosion considerations of straw,” says Neil Blue, provincial crop market analyst with the Alberta government. A 30year study was completed at the Agriculture Canada farm at Indian Head, Saskatchewan in the Black soil zone.
“This study of a wheat-wheat-fallow rotation indicated that continuous removal of above-stubble straw had no effect on yield,” adds Blue, “but did reduce the soil’s ability to convert organic carbon to carbon dioxide and reduced the stability of soil aggregates, which is required for maintaining soil structure and preventing erosion.”
Other studies, however, indicate that the values of organic matter and erosion prevention are more apparent in the Brown, Dark Brown and Greywooded soil zones. An estimated one-half to two-thirds of the total plant material is removed from a field during baling.
A significant amount of material remains as stubble, chaff and root system. “The conclusion is that straw in the ground can provide long-term economic gain, while baled straw
can provide short-term economic returns,” says Blue.
Nutrient content of straw types varies widely in samples taken and climatic factors appear to be the main cause of this variation. Fertilizer costs can be used as a source for valuing some of the nutrient contents of straw, including nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and sulfur.
Using fertilizer-based values for these major nutrients in straw, and baling costs of about $14/large round bale, a 1000 lb. wheat straw bale would be worth $17.70 (in the swath) + $14 (baling cost), or about $32/bale in the field. Hauling costs approximate $5/ bale, depending on distance.
Taking hauling into account, a 1000 lb. wheat straw bale, in the yard, would be worth about $37/bale. Using comparative average nutrient values, a $37 value for a 1000 lb. wheat straw bale implies an “in the yard” value of about $39/1000 lb. barley straw bale, and about $42/1000 lb. oat or pea straw bale. Whether differences in sale value between types of straw occur is up to the marke

Alberta’s feral horse management framework
Currently more than 1,400 feral horses are located across six equine management zones in Alberta. Some equine management zones are facing significant challenges to the long-term sustainability of the ecosystem because of the number of horses on the landscape.
Alberta’s public rangelands are productive ecosystems that support many land uses, including recreation, forestry and resource extraction, wildlife, livestock and feral horses. All these uses need to be managed and balanced to ensure rangelands do not become degraded.
As the feral horse population grows, horses move from areas with good foraging opportunities into areas that are less able to support them. This puts pressure on other wildlife and livestock and creates challenges for ecological stability.
By establishing and implementing a science-based management framework for feral horses, Alberta’s government can better support the species while continuing to protect rangelands
and other animals that live on the landscape.
“While past efforts to inform and engage Albertans on feral horses were unsuccessful, our management framework outlines clear, simple and honest efforts that we hope will resonate with Albertans and ensure we maintain the sustainability of the landscape where feral horses live. Alberta’s feral horses are part of our culture and are appreciated by many Albertans.”
Todd Loewen, Minister of Forestry and Parks
The importance of management frameworks
Management frameworks are essential to protect Alberta’s wildlife, grazing animals and biodiversity. Without a framework in place, feral horses can negatively affect wildlife, birds, fish, cattle and vegetation.
Many game and livestock species that live in Alberta’s ecosystems have management plans. From trout to bighorn sheep to grizzly bears, the government develops management plans to ensure the ongoing sustainability of the species and ecosystems in which they reside.
The new management framework was developed with input from the Feral Horse Advisory Committee. The committee includes stakeholders, subject matter
experts, academic researchers and key organizations that provide insight into Alberta’s feral horse population.
The framework includes a pilot project with the Wild Horses of Alberta Society where capture permits are issued to place distressed or nuisance feral horses into adoption programs.
Alberta’s government is committed to working with universities to continue learning about feral horses and better understand their behaviour through research and ongoing monitoring. The management framework is the first major step toward long-term sustainable management of feral horses and reaffirms their importance to Albertans and their place on the landscape.
Quick facts
Alberta’s feral horses are descendants of abandoned or released domestic horses that were used in logging, guiding and outfitting operations in the early 1900s.
There are six equine management zones in the province: Brazeau, Nordegg, Clearwater, Sundre, Ghost River and Elbow.
In 2023, the Alberta government conducted a count of feral horses across the province. This is referred to as a “minimum count” as there may be more feral horses than those counted by observers.
Brazeau: 18
Nordegg: 33
Clearwater: 97
Sundre: 969
Ghost River: 311
Elbow: 84 (estimate based on 2022 counts)

The Grande Cache Express: day one
The Grande Cache Express is the first in a series of History Circle Tours that takes you to all those little museums that everyone says I should stop there one day and then never do and it does it in style!
This first three day tour starts in Nisku at Blackjacks Roadhouse. Blackjacks was chosen because it is close to the Edmonton International Airport, has a Rider Friendly Hotel and a 24 hour truck stop with some of the best food in the region.
You have two options on how you want to do any of our tours… you can head to Grande Cache for day one of Sucker Creek First Nation…our crew chose Sucker Creek.
We had one couple that was late so kickstands up was at 10 AM instead of 9AM.
We headed toward Highway 60 and Rochefort Bridge Trading Post and Pioneer Museum. With that first 150 K under our belt we took a tour of the museum which is a series of buildings including a school, church, post office and central display room.
This museum is so well done and the depth of history and culture that is on offer is truly impressive as is the quality.
To see more photos of this amazingly well done museum and it’s displays visit
Our Flickr Account and this album: Rochefort Bridge Pioneer Museum
After our visit to the museum we stopped into the Hutterite Concession where you can buy produce, home baking, crocheting, blankets and so much more! The place smells like heaven.
Once your mouth is sufficiently watering it’s time to go into the diner and have some of the best homemade fries in the Universe. Mayor Jabush from Mayerthorpe says that a little vinegar makes the fries magical.
With everyone fed and watered it was time to head off to Mayerthorps and the Fallen Four Memorial. This beautiful memorial space is dedicated to the 4 RCMP officers:Anthony Gordon, Leo Johnston, Brock Myrol and Peter Schiemann who were killed on March 5th 2005. To learn more about this beautiful memorial visit: Fallen Four
A short jaunt up highway 43 and we were at the Whitecourt Forestry Museum and Visitor Center. There is a ton of forestry and community history in this
museum. You can wander for a good hour and still not see everything they have to offer.
To view more photos visit our Flickr Album: Whitecourt Forestry Museum
After topping up with fuel, we went off to Swan Hills to see the Swan and Bear sculpture. The incredible talent it took to make this magnificent wilderness sculpture always makes me feel awestruck.
After a beverage and some photos we were off to our next museum, the Kinosayo Museum in Kinuso.
This is one amazing museum and deceptive in regards to its size. There is not one square inch that has been wasted in this space and the history that has been captured here is breathtaking in
its vastness and quality.
To view more photos visit our Flickr Album: Kinosayo Museum
Our last stop for the day was the Bannock n Bed Inn located on Sucker Creek First Nation, Treaty 8 Territory.
This place is serene, peaceful, and calming.
Owned and operated by Charmaine Willier-Larsen, this B & B features 3 Glamping Tipi’s2 with single beds and one with a queen bed, one traditional Tipi with two cots and a 30’ community/ seminar/teaching tipi.
There are also 2 rooms with a queen bed, one with a double bed and a cabin to rent that has two single beds.

Fall is a good time to control perennial and winter annual weeds, but spraying immediately after harvest may not provide the best results.
Perennial weeds cut off at harvest need time to accumulate new leaf tissue to absorb herbicides. Four weeks is a minimum recommendation and six weeks is ideal. Even when waiting this long, leaf surface area is still just a fraction of what it was prior to harvest. Therefore fall glyphosate rates may need to increase by 2 to 3 times over pre-harvest rates to get the same concentration of glyphosate into the plant root.
Before spraying, identify the weeds present. Perennials such as thistles and dandelions are best controlled from mid September to early October. As noted, waiting at least a month after cutting will increase the target leaf area, but later dates increase the risk of losing healthy leaf tissue to frost. Without healthy leaf tissue, the herbicide can’t get translocation to the weed’s crown and storage roots where the killing can occur.
If weeds are green and the leaf tissue is still relatively pliable after
a frost, growers may still have an opportunity to control perennial weeds with glyphosate or another systemic herbicide. Control can still be obtained on warm sunny days shortly after a frost if no more than 40% of the original leaf tissue is damaged. If most of the weeds are dead, herbicide uptake will be minimal and waiting is recommended.
Warmer temperatures and bright sunshine improve herbicide activity. Apply glyphosate and other systemic herbicides during the heat of day when perennial weeds are actively growing and putting energy into their roots.
October until freeze up is a good time to control winter annuals such as narrow-leaved hawk’sbeard, stork’s-bill, annual sow thistle (common and spiny) and cleavers. That way you get all that have emerged. But check weed staging. Many of the post-harvest product labels have weed staging listed, and winter annuals can hit those stages before October. Apply herbicide when the majority of winter annuals have emerged and are at the right stage for control.

Cost of developing replacement heifers
bull and heifers behind fenceline
Understanding the cost of developing replacement heifers is crucial for informed decisionmaking. The most significant factor in heifer development cost is the opportunity cost of forgoing revenue from selling calves at weaning. Each heifer kept for the breeding herd is one less calf to sell in the fall – the cost of the opportunity for fall revenue that’s being given up.
With cattle prices currently at record highs, the opportunity cost is at its peak. Producers should consider the long-term economic implications of raising replacement heifers and remain aware of potential market volatility throughout the heifer’s lifespan.
beef cattle research council replacement heifer calculator
Are you looking for a simple tool
to calculate the cost of developing replacement heifers? We’ve got you covered! The new BCRC Replacement Heifer Calculator is a decision-making tool adapted from a calculator originally developed by the Western Beef Development Centre.
Replacement Heifer Calculator
The Replacement Heifer Calculator estimates the costs of developing a replacement heifer from weaning, through breeding to preg-checking. The calculator provides estimates of total development costs and a break-even selling price for bred heifers when you input relevant information such as weaning date, cattle prices, expected breeding performance, feed and nutrition costs, veterinary expenses and other associated costs.
EXAMPLE: 2022-BORN HEIFERS
For instance, let’s consider an example with 2022-born heifers. Suppose there were 50 potential replacement heifers selected at weaning on November 1, 2022, with an average weaning weight of 550 pounds. The opportunity cost of keeping these heifers was $1,238/head, based on an average heifer calf price of $2.25/lb in Alberta.
After weaning, the heifers go on feed for 212 days (November 1 to June 1). Assuming these heifers were fed 18 pounds of hay and 3 pounds of grain per day with hay price at 8 cents per pound ($176/ tonne) and grain at 14 cents per pound ($309/tonne), winter feed cost is at $394/head. Adding the cost of bedding at $15/head (500 lbs at 3 cents per pound), and year-round minerals at $30/head,
total feed and bedding cost adds up to at $439/head.
Assume pasture turn-out date will be on June 1, 2023. The heifers will be exposed to natural breeding with bulls during the grazing season and preg-checked on October 15. The grazing period from June 1 to October 15 is 136 days, with grazing cost projected at $1/head/day for a total of $136/head. The cost of natural breeding is based on breeding bull price ($5000/head), number of heifers serviced per year (20 head), number of years used (4 years), annual bull cost ($500/head), semen test and vaccinations ($125/head), less bull salvage value ($2,280/head). The estimated breeding cost is $65/head.

Tips for starting your lightweight calves on feed
Many cow-calf producers from B.C. through Ontario are planning to wean and sell their calves earlier this year. Others are reluctant to sell lightweight calves into a flooded market so are thinking about retaining ownership, putting extra pounds onto lightweight calves, and selling into a more promising feeder market in early 2022.
Many factors need to be considered when preparing to feed lightweight calves.
Calves face health and nutritional hurdles as they are weaned and transitioned to a backgrounding diet. Because of Mother Nature’s cruel summer, those hurdles may be even higher for this year’s lightweight calves.
Despite producers’ diligence, calves from drought-stricken pastures will face unique challenges getting started on feed. The following tips and considerations can help calves be more resilient in the face of these added challenges.
Haven’t worked with nutritionists?
When you’re using unusual feed ingredients to reduce feeding costs, the added expense
of working with a nutritionist is some of the cheapest insurance you can buy.
Sometimes it’s hard to know what nutrients, toxins or antinutritional factors to test for, or where to get things tested. A nutritionist can ensure samples are collected and submitted properly and to the right lab.
When the feed test reports come back, a nutritionist can make sense of them, and figure out the best way to combine your various feed options in a way that uses them as cost-effectively as possible.
DRY PASTURES SHORTCHANGE CALVES
Forage from drought-stricken pastures will not have the same quality as forage in a normal year.
Moisture-stressed or overly mature forages are often deficient in energy and protein, as well as vitamins A, E and possibly D. Selenium and copper deficiencies may also be concerns in some areas.
If water sources are low due to evaporation, the salts and minerals will be concentrated in animals’ drinking water, too. Water quality can increase the

risk of some mineral toxicities, and higher salt levels in the water may also reduce the consumption of free choice minerals, resulting in a mineral deficiency.
Young, growing calves have higher nutrient requirements, so nutrient toxicities or deficiencies can impact them more than mature cows. Nutrient challenges associated with forage and water will be carried into the corral after weaning.
Talking to a nutritionist is particularly valuable this year –they can interpret your feed and water lab test reports, help you understand the current nutritional status of your calves, determine what they’ll need to consume in the months ahead, and help develop strategies to economically cover the gaps.
Your veterinarian can also collect blood samples from a subset of your calves to check for acute mineral and vitamin deficiencies.
WEANING MAY BE HARDER ON YOUNG, LIGHTWEIGHT CALVES
Weaning is stressful in normal years and may be even more of a challenge when calves are weaned early. Consider using low-stress
weaning methods to help calves transition to dry feed more quickly and reduce the risk of illness. If feasible, keep cows and calves together for the calves’ first few days in a new pen. Cows will help calves find water, adjust to the new ration and become comfortable in their new environment.
MAKE EVERY BITE COUNT
Transitioning weaned calves to a new feeding program is key to managing and or even reversing nutrient deficiencies they may have developed on pasture before weaning.
Calves might be reluctant to eat an unfamiliar ration for the first few days, but top-dressing the feed with a palatable supplement containing high levels of vitamins, mineral, protein, and energy can help.
If they’re not consuming much feed, increase the proportion of supplement that is top-dressed to make sure they benefit from the concentrated nutrition the supplement provides. As overall intake increases, decrease the amount of supplement provided.
