ORANGE POWDER: toxic drug alert for DC
Northern Health officials note there has been an increase in overdoses in Dawson Creek linked to a bright orange/red powder as well as a blue substance sold as crystal meth. The Health Authority is warning of possibly other coloured substances causing sudden overdoses, and requiring hospitalization and lengthy monitoring.
“Please take care, drugs move throughout the north,” say officials Tuesday afternoon.
For your safety Northern Health reminds users:
Get overdose prevention, recognition, and response training; carry naloxone
Try not to use alone. Make a plan and tell a buddy who can call for help if needed
If you plan to use alone, use the Lifeguard or BeSafe app available free on the app store or on Toward the Heart website (https:// towardtheheart.com)
Know your tolerance. If you are sick or had a time of abstinence or reduced use, use much less
When possible, avoid mixing drugs or mixing drugs with alcohol
Test a small amount first, start low and go slow
Use in an Overdose Prevention Site (OPS) if possible
Call 911 or your local emergency number right away if someone overdoses

NLC rodeo seeks support
Tom Summer Local Journalism Initiative ReporterThe Northern Lights College Foundation has requested financial support from the Peace River Regional District in the amount of $5,000.
The funds would be used to support the 2023 NLC intercollegiate rodeo, which runs this fall from September 30 to October 1. It’s the second year the event has been held, and will take place at the Lakota Agriplex in Dawson Creek.
The PRRD has previously supported the rodeo, authorizing fair share grant funding for $5,000 from Electoral Area D and $2,500 from Electoral Area E for a total of 7,500. According PRRD agendas, the rodeo cost $124,885.87 to host.
The foundation is a registered non-profit society and the PRRD has also helped the college by funding healthcare scholarship programs. The grant request is expected to be discussed and voted on by PRRD directors this week at their August 3 Rural Budgets Administration Committee meeting.

The War on Crime
Explore a Prince George adventure through time
things paleontology, perfect for those on the #dinotrail.
The action starts with their multimillion dollar upgraded Gaia Hall right out of the gate - showcasing the science and sustainability of aquaponics is what it’s all about.

The Exploration Place in Prince George is one of the highlights on a #dinotrail road trip, for its palaeontology collection and living descendants of the dinosaurs! #dinotrail
Prince George, BC - Looking to set your crew up for adventures through the many portals of time? Set them loose in The Exploration Place in Prince George.
Like Dr. Henry Jones (from the Indiana Jones movie franchise) says in his older years – get out of the library and into the field to learn – but you don’t need a time machine like Marty McFly or HG Wells at The Exploration Place. This Northern BC attraction has an entire hall dedicated to all
Faced at entry with a wall of ancient forest, you look around and realize you are not alone in this strange landscape. A world of remnants of prehistoric ocean life, as reptilian creatures lurk in the underbrush.
Trace a trail of giant footprints leading you to enormous, armoured giants that once ruled these lands.
Exploration Place’s Assistant curator Chad Hellenius says the foyer area alone traces British Columbia’s ancient past from 565 million down to a mere 66 million years ago. Talk about a new leaf.
“It lets our visitors know that plant and foliage recovery is important.”
Trace time from when the planet and British Columbia was covered in water, to greenery, to sea life, to eventually, life on land.
The touch and feel, interactive
and hands-on nature of The Exploration Place allows visitors to experience things first-hand, he says.
Slide out from underneath a mammoth skeleton, get your hands dirty with all kinds of touch and feel, interactive, science to excite the mind.
“It’s that tactile ability to grab hold of these items that our visitors love,” says Hellenius.
More recent histories are there to be explored, and discovered, deepening understanding and knowledge.
“Sturgeon are a connection to this ancient past – they are truly living fossils,” explains Hellenius.
With Prince George located on the unceded ancestral territory of the Lheidli T’enneh First Nation, the facility’s Hodul’eh-a: A Place of Learning brings together the streams of knowledge, quite literally.
The word Lheidli means “where the two rivers flow together” and T’enneh means “the People”
Long lost maps on the floor, and a priceless ceremonial headdress are on majestic display. Treasures.
Did you know lands of central British Columbia is divided into keyohs by the traditional property laws of the Dakelh (the Dene people of the central interior of British Columbia). True story. History.
Keyohs are not be confused with “Indian Bands,” also known as First Nations, a form of government created by colonial governments.
This exhibit showcases a 200-year-old human hair headdress on loan from the Royal Ontario Museum. This regalia was worn on ceremonial occasions by
the Keyohwhudachun (chiefs) of the Maiyoo Keyoh.
Thursdays are absolute hits at The Exploration Place – as are feeding times – for the animals. Visitors can catch a 10:30am daily animal ambassador feeding, as well as daily 2:30pm meet the keeper or a 4:30pm feed the blackbilled magpie times.
If you are looking to feed your crew after a day of exploration and adventure through time – set them down in the Origins Kitchen where you can engage the taste buds more than everywhere else in The Exploration Place. Milkshakes are their speciality along with tons of menu options should a diet of straight up ice cream not work you.
Prince George’s The Exploration Place is open every day from 9 to 5pm and Thursday’s till 8pm.
The attraction is located in downtown Prince George and is an approximate four-hour drive from Tumbler Ridge, or about five and a half hours from Wembley Alberta, home to the Philip J. Currie Museum.
This summer, join ZenSeekers as we travel across Northern Alberta and Northern BC to link together paleontology experiences. Start or end in Prince George (home to The Exploration Place), take this Trackway Tour in Tumbler Ridge, camp in Wembley Alberta to experience the Philip J. Currie Museum and go virtual in Grande Cache with their VR dinosaur track experience.

Saulteau partnering with West Moberly and Chetwynd to map heat risk
Tom Summer Local Journalism Initiative ReporterThe Saulteau and West Moberly First Nations have begun heat mapping this week, to better understand local weather patterns. They’ve also partnered with the District of Chetwynd for the initiative.
They added that the sensors have not been placed anywhere near private residences and culturally or ecologically sensitive areas.
$60,000 in grant funding was secured in June for the project, utilizing funding from the Union of BC Municipalities under their Community Emergency Preparedness Fund. The fund was created to better understand and mitigate the impacts of climate change, with previous intakes in 2022 and 2021.
In 2021, BC experienced a heat dome, with temperatures spiking to record high levels across the province, a threat to many communities. The BC Coroners Service confirmed there were 691 heat-related deaths during the dome.
BC is also experiencing one of the worst wildfire seasons on record, with severe drought. About 400 fires are actively burning across the province. July is also being globally considered as the hottest month on Earth in 120,000 years, according to climate scientists.

BC Ministers’ weigh in on US softwood lumber final ruling
A pair of provincial ministers have weighed in after countervailing and antidumping duties have been applied to Canada’s softwood lumber exports to the United States:
Bruce Ralston, Minister of Forests, and Jagrup Brar, Minister of State for Trade, have issued the following joint statement in response to the US Department of Commerce’s final determination in its fourth administrative review regarding countervailing and antidumping duties applied to Canada’s softwood lumber exports.
“We strongly disagree with the United States Department of Commerce’s claims. The federal and BC governments have been
clear and adamant from the outset: duties on BC and Canadian softwood lumber exports to the US are unjustified,” they said in a Thursday statement.
“British Columbia’s 52,000 hard-working forest industry workers deserve better than these unwarranted barriers to their prosperity, and we will continue to fight against these duties.”
The pair added US duties are hurting people on both sides of the shared border, increasing material costs for Americans and creating uncertainty for forestry professionals and communities in BC, and Canada.

New DC fall fair parade route set for 2023
There will be a new parade route for the 2023 fall fair parade – to help avoid crossing 8th Street.
Rotary Club of Dawson Creek’s Joe Judge was on hand at city hall last month – proposing a new route for the fall fair parade.
Judge and more noted the key issue – avoiding crossing the highway – 8th Street.
Traditionally starting at the DC Co-op – the proposal this year will see the parade begin between the Library and O’Brien school. It will then work its way through the downtown core, including passing city hall before heading south at the Mile Zero Flags on 10th Street, making
its way south to the Library, across the Dawson Creek to NLC for the parade’s traditional conclusion.
“There are some really good pros to move to this location,” said Judge about the larger muster/gathering area between O’Brien School and the DC Public Library.
The less congested nature compared to gathering along 8th Street - a provincial highway - was also noted.
Council noted letting the public know about the change will be key.

DOLORES LORRAINE HUNDER 1937 - 2023
Lorraine Hunder (Dolores Lorraine Born) was born on June 28, 1937, in Winkler Manitoba. She was the oldest of the six children of William and Agatha Born. She grew up in Manitoba where she often moved from one small community to another because her father taught in rural schools. She moved to Baytree, Alberta in January of 1957 and then to Dawson Creek in 1970. She married Fred in 1979 and remained in Dawson Creek until 2013 when she moved to Tache care home in Winnipeg, Manitoba to be closer to her siblings.
Lorraine worked as a homemaker and housekeeper until she moved in with Fred. The happiest days of her life were when they spent time camping and fishing at the lakes around Dawson Creek and area. She loved to knit and crochet, so the grandkids were always supplied with slippers and mittens. She also spent many hours writing letters to family and friends.
Lorraine is survived by her sisters Pearl (Henry) Dueck, Gerry Born, Denise Blackwell, Lorna (Art) Kehler, nieces and nephews and their families. Her stepson Leonard Hunder, stepdaughters Carol (Ken) Berg, Susan (Rick) Haugen, Dianne (Daryle) Duncan and their families.
She was predeceased by her husband Fred Hunder; stepson James Hunder; parents, William (Bill) and Agatha Born; brother Jim Born, 2 brothers in-law Frank Orr and Sam Blackwell, and an infant brother Lorne.
A Graveside Service for Lorraine was held at the Dawson Creek City Cemetery, on Thursday, July 27, 2023, at 1:00 pm. Father Vener Sabacan officiated.
Very Respectfully, Reynars Funeral Home & Crematorium
