A pair of fitness fundraisers were all over DC and the South Peace last week.

Last Monday saw Amy Kaempf running 100 km while Tammy Schmidt cycled the same distance.

Schmidt pedaled in memory of Demee Bassett and for STARS, while Kaempf is ran for local charities - Step Up n’ Ride. The Ark, and South Peace Hospice Palliative Care society.

SANTA CRUZIN’ NORTH! PARADE TIME Hey kids! A3 100 km on a Monday? No problem! Emily Rydberg and Brooke Johnson from Santa Cruz, California, were caught loitering at the Mile Zero sign. We moved them on with a warning. All kidding aside the pair were headed for an adventure into the far north. Equine Preventative Dental Care: Ensuring Your Horse’s LongTerm Health and Happiness

Dawson Creek Vet Clinic

As horse owners, we share a special bond with our majestic equine companions, and their well-being is always a top priority. While we may diligently attend to their overall health and exercise needs, there’s one crucial aspect that often goes unnoticed – equine dental care. Just like humans, horses require regular dental check-ups and preventative care to maintain healthy teeth and gums, which directly impacts their overall health and quality of life.

The Significance of Equine Dental Care

Horses are naturally herbivorous animals, designed to graze on fibrous vegetation, such as grass and hay, throughout the day. As they chew their food, their teeth experience natural wear and growth patterns that ensure efficient and proper mastication. However, domestication has brought changes to their diet and lifestyle. Many horses now have limited access to grazing and may be fed diets that differ from their natural diets. These changes can lead to dental problems such as uneven wear, sharp points, hooks, ramps, and overgrown teeth.

Inadequate dental care can cause discomfort, pain, and even severe health issues in horses. For example, if a horse’s teeth develop uneven wear patterns, it can lead to difficulty chewing and may result in weight loss or malnutrition. Overgrown teeth can create painful ulcers in the mouth, making it uncomfortable for the horse to eat and maintain a healthy body condition. Additionally, sharp edges can cause lacerations on the tongue and cheeks, which can be incredibly painful and interfere with the horse’s ability to concentrate on training or even cause behavioral issues. The roots of teeth can become infected and can spread into the sinus cavities causing malodorous nasal discharge. Regular dental examination can determine the integrity of tooth roots and potential treatment/extraction. Dental X-rays can also be performed to assess sinus disease and tooth integrity.

Routine Dental Examinations and Preventative Care

Large Animals: 250-782-1080

Small Animals: 250-782-5616

To avoid these potential problems, horse owners should establish a routine dental care program for their equine companions. This includes regular dental examinations by a qualified veterinarian. Just as you would visit a dentist for a dental check-up, horses should receive the same care from a professional. Ideally, dental check-ups should occur at least once every six to twelve months, depending on the horse’s age and dental history.

During a dental examination, the veterinarian will perform a comprehensive assessment of the horse’s mouth, teeth, and gums. They will look for any signs of abnormalities, such as uneven wear, overgrown teeth, sharp edges, or signs of dental disease. Equine veterinarians often use specialized equipment and lighting to get a clear view of the horse’s teeth.

If any dental issues are detected, we will perform a procedure known as dental floating. Dental floating involves the use of a specialized rasp or file to smooth out sharp edges, correct uneven wear, and address overgrown teeth. This procedure is generally painless and can significantly improve the horse’s comfort and eating efficiency.

Owner Involvement in Equine Dental Care

While routine dental check-ups by a veterinarian are crucial, horse owners can play an active role in maintaining their horse’s dental health as well. Here are some tips to help you ensure your horse’s teeth stay in top-notch condition:

1. Diet Management: Provide your horse with a diet that is high in fiber and low in sugar. This mimics their natural diet, encouraging proper chewing and promoting dental health. Avoid feeding large quantities of sugary treats, as they can lead to dental issues and other health problems.

2. Access to Grazing or Hay: If possible, allow your horse access to pasture grazing. The constant chewing of fibrous vegetation aids in maintaining proper dental wear. If grazing is not feasible, ensure your horse has access to high-quality hay, which also promotes proper tooth wear.

3. Regular Cleaning: Regularly clean your horse’s water troughs and feed buckets to prevent the build-up of bacteria that can cause dental problems and other health issues.

4. Observe Eating Habits: Keep an eye on your horse’s eating habits. If you notice any changes, such as dropping food or difficulty chewing, it might be a sign of dental discomfort.

5. Treat Behavioral Changes: Dental issues can lead to behavioral changes in horses. If you notice your horse becoming agitated, resisting the bit, or showing signs of discomfort during riding, dental problems could be a contributing factor.

Conclusion

Equine preventative dental care is a critical aspect of responsible horse ownership. Regular dental check-ups and preventative care can identify and address dental issues before they become serious, ensuring that your horse remains healthy, happy, and able to perform at their best. By working closely with a veterinarian who specializes in equine dentistry and following the simple tips mentioned above, you can promote your horse’s dental health and overall well-being, allowing you both to enjoy many years of cherished companionship.

New DC fall fair parade route set for 2023

There will be a new parade route for the 2023 fall fair parade – to help avoid crossing 8th Street.

Rotary Club of Dawson Creek’s Joe Judge was on hand at city hall last month – proposing a new route for the fall fair parade.

Judge and more noted the key issue – avoiding crossing the highway – 8th Street.

Traditionally starting at the DC Co-op – the proposal this year will see the parade begin between the Library and O’Brien school. It will then work its way through the downtown core, including passing city hall before heading south at the Mile Zero Flags on

10th Street, making its way south to the Library, across the Dawson Creek m to NLC for the parade’s traditional conclusion.

“There are some really good pros to move to this location,” said Judge about the larger muster/ gathering area between O’Brien School and the DC Public Library. The less congested nature compared to gathering along 8th Street - a provincial highway - was also noted.

Council noted letting the public know about the change will be key editor@dcdn.ca

Barbie: one funny great film

He-Man got his movie in the 1980s. Dolph!

GI Joe as well, Don Johnson played Lt. Falcon. Then a couple GI Joe live actioners with The Rock.

Transformers the Movie in the mid 1980s and subsequent live action films – another again in 2023.

When was Barbie ever getting a turn? Now is the time.

The conceit to get over is that the dolls are fairly self-aware they are dolls made for children- much like the Toy Story crew.

What they aren’t aware of is how much different the real world is compared to Barbie Land. How the dolls leave their homes (as if being held by children who are playing

with them) is great stuff.

When the doll owners pick up anxiety that sometimes comes with age – the Barbie’s worlds change.  The writing here isn’t woke, it simply plays on the matriarchy and patriarchy roles that are flipped in Barbie Land vs. the real world of the movie.

In Barbie Land – Ken is an afterthought. Everything is pink, and named after Barbie.

The movie truly takes off when Ken discovers “the real world” – and mistakes his perceived patriarchal advantages – he returns to Barbie Land to take it to infantile levels.

Horse medallions. Lightning power headbands.

The Barbie Dream Mansion is now

the Ken Mojo Dojo Casa House.

This being said - the writing combination behind the script of Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach is great.

The real world is represented by Will Ferrell leading a host of Mattel Executives – and his interactions with all the åBarbies are fantastic.

As is Weird Barbie – who has short hair and marker on her face, and can do the splits because her dolls’ legs are broken.  Helen Mirren plays the narrator, while Rhea Perlman is on board playing the creator of Barbie.

Margot Robbie is spot on as the title character – however doing the heavy lifting is a pair of CanucksKens Ryan Gosling and Simu Liuboth are fantastic.

OPINION NICHOLS: out of nowhere!

Out of nowhere the change came and we were blindsided!

Baffled and buffeted by a blitzkrieg of ideas about which we had never thought, or dreamed, we are not sure whether we are here or not here –like on another planet.

Whatever.

Still, it’s strange and intimidating territory and we are uncertain about how to act or react. Are people still people? When is male not male or female not female? Help us, God, to understand.

Some just keep their heads down and hope not to be seen. Others, more intent on maintaining some semblance of normalcy, speak out, carry placards, write in newspapers, maybe find themselves inside looking out through small, dusty, barred windows.

I’m not a youngster, as some of you already know; I’m not easily fooled, but this world, though too much with me late and soon, seems at the point of consuming me – and it would, but I refuse to be consumed. My defense is a solid focus on the age to come which I mentioned last week.

That said, I want to say that I have been blessed with a great grandson. I did write son, a he, a male, born with all the parts to indicate his gender for life.

And I am proud to say so.

I would be equally proud if the little creature had been born a daughter, a she, a female with the parts to indicate her gender for life.

Am I being insensitive? Hateful?

Absolutely, unequivocally, not!

But I am relying on logic, history, and science to bolster my nowunpopular point of view.

Dogs and cats and horses and chickens seem to recognize the gender difference between male and female – and thrive on it.

Why not us?

We learn from history that for thousands of years the human race recognized and celebrated the twogender difference.

What has changed?

The scientific method, which we have embraced for much of our problem solving, should tell us, if we follow its principles, that humanity could be flirting with extinction if we continue down the road we seem to be on. Is that our goal?

None of this madness should have surprised us. We have been amply warned in Scripture that in the last days society will run amok and things we thought were forever secure, such as climate above, tectonic plates beneath, and the family, will start to unravel and there will be a time of

trouble such as this world has never experienced.

Can’t say we are there yet but times are trending to the ominous.

But last Days? Of what?

The earth as we know it.

Scripture, that is the Bible that more that two billion of earth’s inhabitants claim as their source of inspiration, motivation, and personal living, though sadly the Book has not been given the attention and respect it should have had, nor have we who claim to be Christian consistently demonstrated its power and principles in our lives. For shame, folks, on all of us.

But that doesn’t change the fact that from the time the race rebelled against its Maker the plan has been in place to let us get real sick and tired of the mess we’ve made of our lives and our planet.

And then receive the solution in the redemption the Creator willingly, eagerly gives us. Awesome, really!

I regret that there is so much to say and so little space in which to say it – which makes this column just the barest sketch of some of the issues and some of the solutions.

It is important that I admit to being part of the problem.

I’m human with all the tendencies that you have, and you, and you to all humanity.

I’m a white male and you can expect me to use the traditional pronouns.

I’m a Christian who knows that God is not through with us yet; we, like you, are works in progress. Like a block on a lathe, hidden flaws, cracks, and rot can give our Creator challenges as He turns out works of art for His eternal society of peace and justice.

And I realize that all these characteristics will render me suspect, perhaps evil in the eyes of society. So be it.

I was born a male, a he; if or when I die it will be as a male, a he.

As for the little boy, we are passing on to him a world I could never have imagined. He will have to learn to navigate the maze.

By the way, I’ll leave you with a thought out of Scripture penned by Jeremiah: “A horrible and shocking thing has happened in the land: the prophets prophesy lies, the priests rule by their own authority, and people love it this way. But what will you do in the end” (5:30, 31)?

Good question! As Rome rotted from the inside it was bread and circuses.

Looks like things haven’t changed much in 135 generations. Change a few words without changing the intent and it fits us today.

And the people love it that way.

Proud

A robust discussion on fire service needs was had by the Peace River Regional District at their July 20 board meeting, following a presentation on a feasibility study for a regional fire training centre.

Project Manager Dan Blackburn with Transitional Solutions Inc. presented the findings of the study, answering questions and concerns from PRRD directors.

The purpose of the study was to see if the PRRD would benefit from acquiring the Dawson Creek fire training centre, and to examine models for operation of the centre.

Blackburn said they consulted with ten fire services in the region - eight in-person and two virtually, to assess how training is currently delivered. Local departments already lean on each other, he noted.

“We realized early on that there was a strong regional fire service collaboration. So, the fire departments in the region, you know, they’re all facing the same challenges, they are collaborating and that’s one of the key factors that could make this successful,” said Blackburn.

Qualified training instructors already live in the Peace, he added, noting they could draw on their expertise. Blackburn also feels a regional training program is a more financially sustainable model, as opposed to departments holding individual programs.

The largest expense is sending firefighters away for practical training, noted Blackburn. The facility needs

some work to be compliant as a training centre - with warped panels needing replacement, a new non-combustible pathway into the tower, and an optional concrete pad.

“The Dawson Creek fire training centre is adequate for that mission. It’s a very wellbuilt facility and it’s a great starting point for a regional training centre,” he said, noting departments have struggled with meeting minimum training standards since they were nationally implemented in 2014.

The College of the Rockies, Justice Institute of BC, and the Vancouver Island Emergency Response Academy are a few of the institution relied upon for certifications, Blackburn said, noting each department usually has a preferred provider.

A full-time manager position would need to be created to operate a regional centre, says Blackburn, preferably someone with a background in fire service training. That person could oversee scheduling at the facility and report to protective services with the PRRD, while a minimum of four-man crews would be needed to host any training.

The Dawson Creek fire training centre was previously used by other regional fire services, said Blackburn, noting they found it difficult to justify the cost due to being legally obligated to use City of Dawson Creek staff.

“They found it a little bit expensive, because they were paying the unionized fire fighters to do the training,” Blackburn said, noting it resulted in Dawson Creek being the only department to use the facility.

The City of Dawson Creek has since offered management

Taylor Mayor Brent Taillefer said the facility’s funding model is considerably higher than what they already spend to send their firefighters away for training, which is roughly $1,500 for each member, including flights, hotel, and the training itself.

“This facility is you know, for Taylor, too far away to come for an evening training, it would have to be a weekend training that we would have to do, which is what we currently do when we send people down to Comox,” he said. “So, I just want to address that - I don’t see it being cheaper.”

The funding model proposed by the study breaks down costs by municipality as follows, with an annual operating cost and a one-time capital investment cost:

Dawson Creek / Pouce Coupe - annual of $118,435 and capital investment of $405,212.

Hudson’s Hope Fire Protection Only - annual of $4,690 and capital fee of $11,355.

Tumbler Ridge - annual of $27,079 and capital fee of $65,569.

Chetwynd - annual of $32,245 and capital $85,341.

Taylor - annual of $27,071 and capital of $65,548.

Moberly Lake Protectionannual of $1,681 and capital of $4,070.

Toms Lake Fire Protection Area - annual of $15,098 and capital of $36,558.

Charlie Lake Fire Protection Area - annual of $41,828 and capital of $101,282.

In total, it would cost local municipalities just under a million dollars or $927,626 to create the regional training centre under the PRRD, not including other management expenses.
