South Peace Senior Secondary’s classes of 1970-75 reunion a hit
Cynthia OlsenOn June 9 & 10 Dawson Creek hosted 400 former South Peace Senior Secondary students from 1970-75 and their guests for an amazing weekend.
There were many who attended to hadn’t seen one another since high school, over 50 years ago! It was incredible! The kick off was Friday night with a wine and cheese. Huge smiles and hugs and conversations cheerfully filled the Dawson Creek Curling Club where most of the events occurred.
Thank you Greg Wandling for providing a great selection of background music for the night. Saturday morning those who wanted to golf, and get up early after the late night before lol, hit the links.
This was all arranged by our terrific classmate, Jim Mah and our the local Farmington Golf Club. Golfers were treated to many hours of fun and registration included lunch and some amazing prizes donated by our local businesses. Saturday afternoon the upstairs of the curling club was open with a no host bar for those that wanted a place

to visit with their friends for a few hours before the formal banquet. Saturday night included a big banquet, lots of socializing and a dance.
The prime rib, turkey and fixings supper, late night lunch and all the food for the wine and cheese was catered by the curling rink. It was all exceptional! A lovely surprise occurred when Dorothy Gunther Smith appeared on Friday night with her tripod and camera. She took countless more formal photos of all who wished and many are posted on our SPSS Reunion Facebook site. She is now looking in to the possibilities of creating an online photo book of the event.
The excellent local band Peace
Haven had many out on the dance floor for hours. Yes many were still able to dance up a storm! When it was time to say goodnight and goodbye it was bitter sweet. It had been such a great time and not likely to be repeated. Hard to say farewell. Thank you to Step Up and Ride who provided a safe ride home to all who wished. This event would not have occurred without the efforts of the reunion planning committee who had been meeting for a year to make this wonderful event come to fruition.
The year prior Kathie Braden Laforge had reached out asking others if they were interested and willing to pursue this venture. A great team emerged.
Big ‘spud’ headed to Alaska
TW Buck Reporter/PhotographerTalk about a loaded potato.
What started out as a celebration for the 75th anniversary in 2012 of the Idaho Potato Commission is on its 11th cross-country tour, which has brought the Big Idaho

Potato Truck through the Peace Region on its way to Alaska.
The tour takes around seven months and travels the country between events, promoting certified heart-healthy Idaho potatoes according to the Big Idaho Potato Tour website.
This is the tours first time in Canada as it travels north to Skagway, Alaska for an event on July 22.
“This is the famous Idaho Potato Tour. We travel for seven months spreading Idaho love all over the country,” says Melissa Bradford, who has been a driver for the last five tours.

With part of the marketing campaign for the tour asking if the potato is real, locals had to go down and see for themselves when it made a stop for fuel in Fort St john, early Wednesday afternoon.
“It’s a steel structure, with a fiberglass shell and a really good paint job,” says Bradford. “The inside has metal shelving with all of our tour swag, and then the back has lockers with our belongings. Due to us being gone for so long, we pretty much have to bring the kitchen sink with us.”
The ‘spud’ being transported is actually the second edition, with the first being made out of concrete which now resides in Idaho and has since been transformed into an Airbnb hotel.
“Even just pulling into the dirt lot here, people’s hands were in the air and their waving and smiling. Whether it’s a rest stop, a grocery store, a school, a church, people get excited when they see the truck.”

from the front, the campground case -
The couple had intended to develop the site to include a cultural centre, campground, community garden and gift store for First Nations crafts.
Several unpermitted structures were flagged by the PRRD for removal from the property to comply with zoning bylaws, including electrical and sewer infrastructure.
“By the time the Respondents learned that the Property was within the ALR, various dwellings and structures had been moved onto the Property and the campground had been constructed to a degree,” wrote Fitzpatrick.
“The Respondents say that they then stopped developing the Property in relation to the campground and other aspects of their business venture,” she added.
Camp shacks for employee housing were also added to the property, noted the judgment. With four dwellings in total, the property was two above what’s permitted under zoning bylaws.
“The Respondents have not pointed to any authority that engage ongoing attempts to rectify zoning, land use infractions or due diligence as a defence to enforcement of zoning or land use bylaws,” writes Fitzpatrick.
Furthermore, PRRD bylaw only allows homebased businesses for properties under 1.8 hectares, and from an approved list of business types, with the property being 17.8 hectares, well beyond the approved size for an A-2 zone.
Any property owners wishing to exclude their land from the ALR must make an application to the Agricultural Land Commission, with the support of the appropriate local government - which
Supreme Court rules in favour of PRRD
was the PRRD in this case.
An adjudication meeting was held in January 2022 for the PRRD, with one bylaw ticket being cancelled, as the adjudicator felt the owners were actively attempting to fix the ALR zoning issue, but did violate zoning bylaws by not checking the permit status of the structures.
Pringle and Shadow sought two exemptions from the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC), but were rejected in April 2021 and July 2020, ceasing development in November 2019, when they learned of the ALR status.
The ALC panel rejected the application on the basis that the campground is not an approved use under the ALC act, and was built without ALC approval or the required PRRD building permits.
“The Panel finds that the Applicants, through the exercise of due diligence, could have determined that their Property is located in the PRRD and the ALR, and that lack of awareness of the regulations cannot be used to justify noncompliance,” wrote ALC Panel Chair Janice Tapp in July 2020. Reconsideration was asked by the owners,
but refused again by the ALC on Oct. 27, 2021, for the reasons stated in the previous rulings.
The ALC panel noted that a 10.7-hectare exclusion request by the owners wouldn’t be appropriate, despite leaving a campground green space of 7.1 hectares for gardening. Music festivals and camping are not consistent with Section 6 of the ALC act, and would not preserve agricultural use if allowed, the panel said.
Fitzpatrick said the couple must pay any bylaw penalties owed to the PRRD, with the
regional district also entitled to costs incurred by the judicial review.
“I cannot discern any basis to refuse the relief sought by the PRRD,” wrote Fitzpatrick. “I conclude that relief is appropriate in the circumstances. I order that the penalty set out in Bylaw Notice 212 is immediately due and payable by the Respondents to the PRRD.”

OPINION Nichols: Gates, Schwab, Trudeau, Et Al
Merlin Nichols ColumnistBill Gates, Klaus Schwab, Justin Trudeau, and all others in your circle of influence, surprise, you are all human like the rest of us and subject to the ultimate limitations of all humanity.
“What do we gain from all our labor at which we toil under the sun” (Ecclesiastes 1:2)?And what do the wealthy and powerful gain from all their investments, their posturing, their threats?
“Generations come and generations go, but the earth remains” (Ecclesiastes 1:3) – for the present.
In southern France, Mirja and I observed fascinating formations on heavily forested mountain sides. Fascinating for their uniformity, until we understood: Once upon a time during the Roman period they were terraced vineyards, and in the valley below, arched stone bridges built by the same Romans still span the stream.
In Italy we observed the lush production of the Po valley amid villages and cities millennia old.
And the earth remains with much of its original beaty and regenerative capacity intact.
In spite of – just fill in the blanks.
But will it remain forever?
Will it succumb to human depravity and depredation, or will some other cause bring an end to
our toil, pain, fear, hopelessness, and pleasure?
Right now, we are hearing strident voices warning of doomsday from the warming of the planet and the accumulation of CO2 in our atmosphere.
Within living memory of anyone over 50 it was doomsday from the cooling of the planet.
You can’t have it both ways, John, so what’s your pick?
Let me introduce you to a writer, stateman, and prophet from the 7th and 6th centuries BC.He had much to say about the time in which we find ourselves struggling to survive if not thrive, and about all the intervening times for those approximately 2700 years.
When we compare his prophecies, call them predictions if it makes you feel more comfortable, with the written record of the history of those intervening years, centuries, and millennia, one thing stands out: he is bang-on accurate.
With a record of accuracy like that, one is not being naïve to suppose that his prophecies that are still future will likely pan out the way he has described them.
His name was Daniel, and you will find his work in the English Bible sandwiched between the writings of Ezekiel, a contemporary, and Hosea from the middle of the 8th century BC.
Daniel was an involuntary eunuch in the government of
The War on Crime
Nebuchadnezzar, the richest and greatest ruler of the NeoBabylonian empire.
Daniel wrote four prophecies during his seventy plus years of service to Babylon and Babylon’s successor empire, Medo-Persia. The prophetic time spans begin with either Babylon or Medo-Persia, depending on the date of writing, and extend to the end of time.
The prophecies deal with the political, military, and religious features of the centuries, with each succeeding prophecy adding to the detail.
By 2023 we have seen everything fulfilled to this date with astonishing accuracy. Only one detail remains to be completed.
Give me only one good reason to doubt that this remaining item will not be fulfilled with the same attention to detail as the rest of the prophecies for the last 2700 years.
Only one, good reason or bad.
Then explain to me how a courtier, diplomat, advisor of the king of Babylon could see with such precision into the far-distant future.
There is only one answer.
God will do nothing without revealing His secrets through His servants, the prophets(Amos 3:7).
Seems like His secrets have been revealed; our role is to read and understand.
And what is the final item to be
accomplished?
God will set up His everlasting kingdom of justice and peace –and right now the invitation is still open to participate in that everlasting kingdom!
That’s it and it has been written there for the last 2700 years –and in English for more than 400 years,
No, the earth won’t stall out in a pandemic with its lockdowns and mandates, though we likely will experience more of them. It won’t fizzle out in a global meltdown, though we likely will see massive upheavals in the systems we have taken for granted. It won’t even blast out in a nuclear holocaust, though wars will not cease.
It will end when the Creator shouts from above, “Enough. You’ve had your chance and you’ve blown it big. My turn now! It’s time for My eternal kingdom of justice and peace to be established. I am going to make everything new. Everything.”
And so, Klaus Schwab, Bill Gates, Justin Trudeau, and all others great and small, listen up. There’s a place in that everlasting kingdom of justice and peace for each of you if you willrelinquish your pride and ambition down here.
Because, as CS Lewis, the English atheist turned great Christian apologist so notably declared, “No souvenirs of hell will be admitted through the narrow gate” (The Great Divorce).

Proposal to convert Site C workcamps to drug treatment facility
A proposal to convert Site C workcamp facilities into drug treatment and rehab facilities will be discussed today at the PRRD.
A motion expected to be introduced by Dawson Creek mayor Darcy Dober – offers to start discussion with BC Hydro, Local First Nations, North Wind Wellness Centre, Northern Health, the First Nations Health Authority and the Province to begin.
Earlier this summer, BC Hydro hosted a Regional Community Liaison Committee Meeting and Tour on June 7. The first part of the tour consisted of a walkthrough of the main ATCO lodge and a presentation on the site’s decommissioning plans.
The North Wind Wellness Centre (NWWC) currently serves the region, operating an Indigenous-
focused 10-bed health and wellness centre in Farmington. They want to expand their program to another site in Pouce Coupe for a 60-unit facility as the first phase and eventually build an expanded facility; Addictions Recovery Community Housing (ARCH).
“Since the tour, I have spoken to the Minister of Health, the Minister of Mental Health and Addictions, BC Hydro, North Wind Wellness Centre, and Northern Health and raised the idea of the possibility of moving the expanded NWWC program to the BC Hydro lands or having access to some of their decommissioned buildings,” says Dober in report to the PRRD on today’s agenda.

Child trafficking movie Sound of Freedom opens in Mile Zero
A popular film shining a light on international child trafficking plays in Mile Zero this week.
In the vein of Traffic, Syriana or Crossing Over, some 15 years ago now comes Sound of Freedom. Sound of Freedom is a much more realistic look at the same situation as Taken - but not boiled down to a Liam Neeson phone call
Sound of Freedom shines a light on child trafficking and its fallout. International crimes in many cases. What happens to the children and where they are taken and what they do.
Here Jim Caviezel tracks down a specific sister, to reunited them with siblings. While at PG-13, some of the sequences - simply knowing they are about children are haunting enough. Caviezel carries this picture - his character is a utility in the same way Chris Hemsworth’s role in a couple of
Extraction films has been.
The film does gloss over the finding an tracking down of the child rings – often a cut or two and Caviezel is somehow right on their trail with little logic or reason. Tackle the Epstein case in the next film and you can greenlight a sequel to this faster than you can say Sound of Freedom II: Electric Boogaloo.
An issue-based film that will have people talking and plays this week in the Creek throughout the week. editor@dcdn.ca
