Vein treatment Q&A WITH VISCONTI IMAGING AND VEIN

Leg pain. Swelling. Ulcerations.

Restless legs. Bulging veins. Did you know that these symptoms can be caused by varicose veins, or venous insufficiency? The treatment for venous insufficiency is an officebased procedure; surgery is not required and you can return to work the next day! And most insurance carriers will cover vein treatment if you are symptomatic. Dr. Visconti has performed more than 10,000 cases at Visconti Imaging and Vein – here are some of the most frequently asked questions during his initial consultations: Q: What is venous insufficiency?

A: Venous insufficiency is a problem with the flow of blood from the veins in the legs back to the heart.

Healthy leg veins have valves that open to allow upward movement of blood flow and then snap shut to prevent backward flow. If these valves become faulty and do not close properly, the blood flows in the wrong direction. This causes the vein to distend and blood pools in the legs. This distention of the veins is frequently referred to as “varicose veins.”

Q: How is venous insufficiency treated?

A: Endovenous ablation is the preferred method of treatment for varicose veins. This minimally invasive procedure is performed in our office in less than an hour.

During the procedure, a small incision is made and the laser fiber is inserted into the varicose vein (veins are without nerve endings; patients will not feel this). Once the laser is activated, the energy gently heats and safely closes the vein.

Once the vein is closed, the blood that was circulating through the diseased vein is simply rerouted to other healthy veins. Treated veins will eventually diminish over time.

Visconti Imaging and Vein utilizes the CoolTouch CTEV laser because it is the most comfortable laser technology available. This laser uses a higher wavelength than other lasers, requiring less heat to close the vein. Patients are awake during the procedure and will feel very

little pain, as the leg will be locally anesthetized.

Q: How do I know if I have venous insufficiency?

A: Some patients have large bulging veins that protrude from the skin but others suffer from symptoms such as leg pain, cramping, itching, or restless legs. The only way to determine if venous insufficiency is causing these symptoms is to do an ultrasound. At Visconti Imaging and Vein, the ultrasound scan takes about one hour; your results and treatment options are discussed in detail at this appointment.

Q: Do I need a referral from my doctor?

Q: I have spider veins that are unsightly; can I get those treated?

A: Yes – the method for treating spider veins is a bit different than treating varicose veins. We can inject a solution to close the veins in the leg or we can use the VeinWave to treat the veins on the face.

OMH expands

NOW PRIVIDING SERVICES IN INDIAN RIVER Otsego Memorial Hospital (OMH) announced earlier this year service expansion into the greater Indian River community. OMH Medical Group – Obstetrics and Gynecology physicians Dr. Lori Burke, Dr. Jessica Kiley and Dr. David Miner are seeing patients at the OMH Medical GroupIndian River office location.

Otsego Memorial Hospital recognizes that the Northern Michigan weather and far distances can take a toll on patients. As a result, the hospital offers office obstetrics and gynecology services and procedures in Indian River to reduce travel for patients.

Obstetrics patients can now see their physician in Indian River instead of traveling down to Gaylord for monthly appointments.

All obstetrics and gynecology physicians work in partnership with the Otsego Memorial Hospital Birthing Center, which offers spacious labor, delivery and postpartum rooms to accommodate all needs of mom, baby and support team. Plan ahead FOR A HEALTHY TRIP

Thanks to 21st century travel, it’s pretty easy to get from Point A to Point B; in fact, more than 15 million people will travel abroad this year, with half of those traveling to developing countries. But wanderlust must be tempered by safety: don’t book that trip without also booking your immunizations. You don’t want an illness to be a part of your vacation memories. For travel health tips, read on.

DISEASE AVOIDANCE — Know About Your Destination Share detailed information with your health care provider; in addition to your medical history, your doctor will want to know your destination, length of stay, and planned activities. Are you touring museums or hiking the rain forest?

Staying in established hotels or sleeping in a tent on the veldt?

Your itinerary makes a difference.

VACCINES — Get Your Shots Provide a complete vaccine record if possible. Vaccines differ in terms of cost and risk, so providing a complete vaccine history will help your provider determine which vaccines are necessary. Routine vaccines include tetanus, measles, and polio boosters, as well as diptheria/pertussis, zoster, human papiloma virus, and influenza vaccinations. Those over age 65 should have the pneumococcal vaccine; children and teens should have a hepatitis B series.

Foreign travel, however, has specific indications for vaccines.

Hepatitis A, typhoid, and rabies vaccines are recommended for certain travel. Meningitis is common in parts of Africa, and the meningitis vaccine is required for entry into Saudi Arabia. Yellow fever is found in sections of Africa and South America, and immunizations are required for some regions or when crossing into other countries. Rural areas of Southeast Asia and South Asia

are known for mosquito-borne Japanese encephalitis. Finally, the flu (influenza) is common in North America during the winter months, but it occurs year-round in the tropics; travelers are urged to get the vaccine yearly. Some vaccines require a minimum two-dose series, one month apart, so it is important to begin preparations 6-8 weeks before departure.

PRESCRIPTIONS — Don’t Leave Home without Them Make sure that your prescriptions are filled before departure. Carry a letter from your health care provider with contact information and prescriptions, along with a complete list of medications, their dosage, and their generic names.
