ean Bach is a magnetic powerhouse. Period.

Upon meeting you, instantly, you understand his success in the restaurant business. Charming and easy to talk to he embodies all the qualities you want in a dining experience — elegant and intelligent, but laid back and approachable. The Belle Iron Grille (B.I.G.) in Gaylord is a testament to his personality and experience. Honed by fine dining restauranteur Chuck Muer, you can immediately see what happens when classic food items meet creative and innovative menu planning. After starting as a dishwasher at Muer’s Detroit restaurant, Eastside Charlie’s, when he was 15 years old, Bach learned the industry quickly and became a cook before he turned 16. He took a break from the food industry for a couple of years after high school, serving in the Marine Corps as an infantryman, but returned soon after. “I was working in the kitchens, and then when I got out of the Marines, I went right back as a waiter to learn the front of the house since I already knew the back of the house,” he said. He’s remained in the industry ever since he opened his first restaurant at 30, and now with the Belle Iron Grille his fourth. “I always said I wanted to own my very own restaurant someday,” he said. “This is my fourth restaurant. I have two in Ferndale and then one I opened in Northville about ten years ago, although I sold that to my business partner.” Bach also plans to be involved with the community in Gaylord as much as he is downstate. A 6,000 square foot outdoor entertainment and event pavilion is almost complete. “We’ll host community events, concerts, that type of thing,” he said. “I want to make this a place on the new trailhead that people want to come to, like snowmobilers in the winter.”

“I’m a big community guy,” he said. “Right now, I’m president of the Ferndale Downtown Development Authority, with the school board for Central Michigan University charter schools, and I’ve always been involved with restaurant communities.” “We just bought a house on Otsego Lake and plan on moving up here in the next two years, so I plan on being involved here as well,” he said. “I just turned 50 years old. I spent my first 50 years in Detroit, and I’m going to spend my last 50 years in Gaylord.” Bach oozes ambition, and his enthusiasm is contagious. His secret is simple. “Don’t give up. Don’t give up, man. Cause you’re going to wake up some days and ask ‘what the hell am I doing this for?’ Don’t sell yourself short. You can get it done. You’ve just got to want it. If you don’t want it, then don’t do it. Don’t even start. Make sure that when you’re getting into it, whatever it is you’re doing, you want it. You’re going to have days where you want to quit. Unfortunately, when you quit, that all stops. Your employees will stop. Everything ceases to exist, and it can’t be an option. So, my big advice is don’t let failure be an option. Get up and do it. You’re going to get tired. Take a nap for a minute. You can fire yourself for a day, but you can get your job back the next day.”
