Ida Edwards: Strengthening Business and Community Through Lifelong Learning

For Ida Edwards, education has been a lifelong pursuit - one that has shaped her career, strengthened her business, and even become a family tradition!

As a business owner, council member for the Town of Athabasca, and alum of the Business Administration program at Northern Lakes College (NLC), Ida has embraced learning as a way to stay ahead in an ever-changing world.

“My daughter took the program in 2004, and I was really impressed with the content,” Ida reports. “I have a bachelor’s degree in Music, and I serve on different boards and arts groups, but I was feeling left behind when it came to grant applications, bookkeeping, and financial statements. Everything was moving online, and I realized I either had to upgrade my skills or step away from these responsibilities.” Ida chose NLC for its accessibility and flexibility. It took me five years to complete because I did it part time, but I could spread out the classes, which made it manageable. The teachers were very supportive.”

One course that surprised her was Business English. It really clarified business communication, especially in writing letters

STUDENT STORY

and proposals. I didn’t realize how different that kind of writing was until I took the course.”

But returning to school as a mature student wasn’t without its challenges. “I wasn’t sure if I could do it. And to be honest, math and statistics melted my brain. I had never studied so hard in my life! But you know what was really interesting? Doing math made me a better musician. My sightreading, my ear training, my ability to make music - it all improved. There’s definitely a connection between math and music.”

Ida also appreciated the challenge her instructors provided. “They were very task-oriented,” she says. “It wasn’t like, ‘Oh, you’re a mature student—good for you.’ It was, ‘Here’s the work, now get it done.’ I liked that approach.”

Education has been a family affair for Ida. “My whole family has gone to Northern Lakes College,” she says. “My daughter did Business Administration, my son took Power Engineering, and my husband also completed Power Engineering. At one point, my son was struggling and my husband said, ‘It’s not that hard.’ So, my son challenged him to take the courseand he did!”

Looking back, Ida encourages others not to delay their education. “Just do it,” she advises. “Time is going to pass whether you go back to school or not, so you might as well make the most of it. Lifelong learning is so rewarding, and it helps you grow in ways you don’t expect.”

LEAD WITH PURPOSE. SERVE WITH INTEGRITY.

The NLCSA is the collective voice of Northern Lakes College students. Through representation, advocacy, and leadership, we strive to enhance the student experience across all learning environments—whether online, in the lab, or in the community. Our student leaders are empowered to bring forward the ideas, concerns, and priorities of their peers, ensuring that student perspectives shape the decisions that affect them.

We take our responsibility to act in the best interests of our students seriously. As stewards of student resources, we uphold a strong fiduciary duty— ensuring funds are used transparently and effectively to benefit the entire student body and reflect the diverse communities we serve.

By getting involved with the NLCSA, students grow their leadership skills, make meaningful connections, and leave a lasting impact on campus life, governance, and community well-being.

“At 28, I came back to school not just to earn a credential—but to find my voice. Getting involved with the Students’ Association helped me build confidence, understand how decisions get made, and advocate for others. I never thought sitting at a table with college leaders would be part of my journey, but it taught me leadership, accountability, and communication skills I now use every day in the workplace. That experience wasn’t just meaningful in school—it changed the way I show up in my career.”

Tia Isadore-Badger: Revitalizing Language and Strengthening Community Through Education

Tia Isadore-Badger recently completed her Bachelor of Education at the University of Calgary, after finishing her last practicum in Driftpile Cree Nation. Her educational journey began at Northern Lakes College (NLC), where she enrolled in Academic Upgrading before transitioning into University Studies. Studying virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic allowed her to remain close to home while caring for her grandmother, and it also gave her time to reflect on the type of educator she wanted to become.

Tia’s motivation to teach was rooted in her own school experiences. “When I was younger, I realized there was a lack of Indigenous teachers, or teachers that understood Indigenous perspectives and family lifestyles,” she says.

Determined to change that, Tia majored in Revitalization of Indigenous Languages, as part of her degree, aiming to bring Cree language and cultural knowledge into the classroom. “I want to not only provide language, but also more understanding to other teachers and people in my school community for Indigenous education.”

Tia’s academic path was shaped by the guidance and support she received at NLC. She credits NLC staff member, Paula,

STUDENT STORY

as a significant mentor who encouraged her to apply for the University of Calgary’s Community-Based Bachelor of Education program, a collaboration between NLC and the University of Calgary’s Werklund School of Education. “She gave me a couple of choices, and she saw my potential before I even saw it myself.”

Beyond academics, Tia faced significant personal challenges, including the loss of her sister and the lasting effects of intergenerational trauma. When she first began post-secondary studies at another institution, she struggled so much with these factors that she eventually withdrew from the program. “When I came home, I didn’t know if I was going to continue with my education, but Paula and the rest of my family and community encouraged me to keep going.”

Tia now envisions a future in educational leadership, helping to bridge the gap between schools and Indigenous communities. “I want to bring more connections from the community into the school,” she says. “I want to close that disconnect.”

For young Indigenous students, Tia offers words of empowerment. “Recognize intergenerational traumas from residential schools, but also understand that’s not your fault,” she says. “You can grow beyond that. You can go further than you ever imagined.”

Now that she has graduated, Tia is looking ahead to the impact she hopes to make. From reclaiming her language to empowering future generations, she is proving that education is not just about personal success, but about strengthening an entire community.

Liam Van Roon: Building a Future in Carpentry

At just 17 years old, Liam has already laid the foundation for a promising career in carpentry. As a graduate of the Pre-Employment Carpenter program at Northern Lakes College, he has leveraged his early education into a full-time position with Biggs and Little Contracting.

Growing up in a family of tradespeople, Liam always had a passion for using his skills to create something new. When Liam learned about the Dual Credit program at Northern Lakes College, he saw an opportunity to get a head start on his career while still earning high school credits. “A lot of people don’t realize it’s an option” he reports, “but it’s great because you get knowledge from the College while working toward your high school diploma. It helped me finish the last credits I needed to graduate.”

Liam officially graduated high school early and is now working full-time as a carpenter. “I did the first semester at the College, and now I’m in the workforce full time. It’s been a smooth transition.”

His time at Northern Lakes College gave him a strong foundation, both in technical skills and in professional confidence. “I really liked the College experience,” Liam says. “The small class sizes and one-on-one instruction made it easier to learn. It was a great environment.”

Liam’s pre-employment training has proven invaluable on the job site and gave him an edge when applying for work. “Having the program on my resume made a huge difference,” he says. “It shows you’ve taken the initiative to learn the trade rather than coming in with no experience.”

He encourages other high school students to take advantage of the Dual Credit and Pre-Employment programs at Northern Lakes College. “I’d tell them to try it out and follow through. Even if you decide later that carpentry isn’t for you, you’ll always have that knowledge and experience to fall back on. It’s a win-win - you get high school credits and career training at the same time.”

A career in Resource Technology offers the diversity of working both inside and outside the office.

Lauren’s Story: Building a Future in Early Childhood Education Close to Home

Lauren Wolsey always knew she wanted to help people, but it wasn’t until she considered her childhood dream of becoming a kindergarten teacher that she solidified her career path. Unsure of where to begin her post-secondary education, Lauren ultimately chose the University Studies program at Northern Lakes College (NLC), allowing her to stay in her hometown of Drayton Valley while gaining the education she needed to progress toward her goal.

“I live in a small town, so moving away was the only option to physically attend classes, and quite frankly, I just wasn’t ready to leave,” Lauren explains. Studying remotely through NLC gave her the flexibility to maintain her job, spend time with family and friends, and gradually transition into post-secondary life. “It’s been great because I get to stay with my family, and I get to reduce the cost of my education overall.”

Lauren’s success at NLC prepared her for the next step in her academic journey: transferring to the University of Calgary’s Community-Based Bachelor of Education program. Now in her third year, she reflects on how her time at NLC gave her the strong foundation she needed to succeed. “I think it absolutely did. It slowly eased

STUDENT STORY

me into what was to come,” she says. “NLC definitely helped me prepare myself for this next step.”

One of the highlights of her university experience has been her practicum placements, both of which took place in Drayton Valley. “I think that’s another great thing about doing online school - I am planning to stay in Drayton after school. By doing my practicum locally, I get to know many students and future colleagues.”

Through her studies, Lauren found a particular passion for Indigenous Studies courses. “I have loved every Indigenous Studies course that I’ve taken. They’ve been a vital part of the growth of my understanding which will be important as I pursue my career as an educator,” she says. While she is not an Indigenous student herself, she values the awareness and understanding these courses have provided.

Looking ahead, Lauren envisions herself running her own kindergarten class in Drayton Valley, and she is also considering pursuing a master’s degree. “I am considering pursuing a master’s degree but that is a future endeavor.”

For high school students unsure of their post-secondary path, Lauren encourages them to consider NLC. “It was a great way for me to begin my education in an easily accessible learning environment. NLC provided me with the courses I needed through University Studies to fulfill my education requirements for the University of Calgary’s Community-Based Bachelor of Education program.”
