A Celebration of Heritage 3

The Business of ‘Waipu In Tartan’

O

How Tartan Day Came to Be

I

n an attempt to crush the Clan system, the British Parliament passed an Act of Proscription on the 1st August 1746 forbidding Highlanders, except army personnel to wear Tartan, play the pipes or carry weapons. The British Army realised that amongst the ranks of the young, dispossessed highland warriors, the tartan and the

pipes were of special significance for maintaining moral, so with the help of the Highland Society of London, the Act was repealed on the 1st July 1782, making it lawful once again for Scottish Highlanders to wear tartan and play the pipes. Since then the anniversary of the Repeal Proclamation’ has been annually celebrated as ‘Tartan Day’.

“Listen men. This is bringing before all the sons of the Gael, the King and the parliament of Britain have forever abolished the Act against the High Dress; which came down to the Clans from the beginning of the world to the year 1746. This must bring great joy to every Highland heart. You are no longer bound down to the unmanly dress of the Lowlander. This is declaring to every man, young and old, simple and gentle, that they may after this put on and wear the Truis, the Little kilt, the Coat and the Striped hose as also the Belted Plaid, without fear of the law of the Realm or the spite of the enemies.”

nce a sleepy little town, Waipu has become a vibrant showcase for its Scottish heritage thanks to a proactive clan of people. The Waipu Business and Promotions Group has grown from a handful of retailers in the early 90’s to an assemblage of active community members who donate time, labour and money to create facilities and events to make a difference to locals and visitors. Amenities like the public toilets and bus shelters, new signage in and around the town, preservation of old buildings, care and upkeep of the park and support for sports clubs like croquet, bowls, rugby as well as initiatives that put the town on the map like the street markets, Christmas and Easter Carnivals, Waipu Coastal Trail and Celtic Barn. Famous for the internationally acclaimed Highland Games, the town thrives throughout the summer months, but shops and accommodation businesses struggle in winter, so the search was on for a draw card. Rosemary Neave stumbled upon ‘International Tartan Day’ and in 2006, the village celebrated their first Tartan Day when people and their pets took to the streets donned in kilts. In 2010, The Art n Tartan Wearable Arts were developed as a major focus by the Waipu Museum, pulling crowds from far and wide. They’ll be staging

their fifth event in the auspicious new Celtic Barn this year. The past 9 years have seen a one day celebration morph into nearly a month of events that bring the town to life for locals and visitors. The Waipu Business and Promotions Group welcome new members to help sustain the strength s this little town has to offer and build a future for generations to come.

The Vet Centre Volunteers are at the We Care - Animals - ‘Heart’ of the Waipu People - Community Hospice Shop PEOPLE AND PETS PARADE – WAIPU July 4th 2015

T

he Vet Centre is proud to once again sponsor the PETS IN TARTAN PARADE. The Pets in Tartan parade is a fun family event with prizes galore and give-away pet food samples for all entrants. After the parade the Vet Centre staff will also provide a sausage sizzle with a gold coin donation for the Whangarei SPCA. This annual event allows the staff at the Vet Centre to mix with our clients in a relaxed and casual manner whilst celebrating Waipu’s proud Scottish heritage. The parade gathers outside the Pizza Barn at 11:00 am and proceeds down the main street led by the Waipu Pipe Band. Do not hesitate; dress up yourselves, your family, the pooch and/or the puss and take part in this annual event. I’m sure we’ve had a chook in the parade before, and rumour has it there may have even been a tartan sheep running around. As the parade is on the fourth of July this year, the

best dressed “American” in tartan will also receive a prize. This is a fun event so there is a prize for the bravest man as well - let’s face it you have to pretty brave to wear a kilt at any time, let alone in winter. The prizes will be awarded by The Vet Centre staff at the sausage sizzle outside the Vet Centre clinic after the parade down the main street. We look forward to seeing you there. Take plenty of photos and come in and share them with us afterwards. (Just a note of caution, please ensure all pets are appropriately restrained.)

“Two years have flown by and we are so grateful to our dedicated taskforce of volunteers, the local businesses and the wider community for their ongoing support of the Waipu Hospice Shop,” says Kathy McMillan, Retail Manager.

O

ur wonderful team of shop volunteers are at the ‘heart’ of the operation,” says Leonie Gallaher, General Manager , North Haven Hospice, “and I would like to say a special thank you for their commitment to keeping the shop ticking smoothly week to week, on Saturday mornings and also on some public holidays.” “The busy Waipu shop is always on the lookout for more volunteers especially through the winter and over busy holiday periods, explains Kathy McMillan. “If you have the gift of time and would like to help us out please let us know.” “Most people drop their donated goods to the Hospice shop,” says Kathy, “however the pickup of larger goods by the Hospice truck team can be arranged. “This has been made possible with the generous support of Harcourts, Optimize Realty, and Whangarei.” Proceeds from the two Hospice shops at Waipu and the town centre in Whangarei

generate more than 22 % of the income required to operate Hospice services across the wider Whangarei area- from Bland Bay to the north and Mangawhai Heads to the south. “The Waipu Hospice shop provides a vital link with the community living in the southern reaches of North Haven Hospice’s service area,” says Leonie Gallaher, “and with its unique, colourful culture and wonderful vibrant community, Waipu will continue to be a very special place for all involved in the operation of North Haven Hospice.”

THANK YOU to the community of Waipu and surrounding districts for your support over this past year.

n March 2011 a public meeting was called to look at hall capacity for the next 50 years. A feasibility committee was formed and it was agreed that the existing hall should be kept and refurbished, and that Waipu should build an adjacent multi-purpose facility in the Caledonian Park. The Waipu Joint Venture was formed between the Waipu Caledonian Society, Waipu Hall Committee, and the general Waipu Community to refurbish the existing hall and build a new facility in the adjacent Caledonian Park. The two venues could

act separately or in tandem for very large events. The Waipu Caledonian idea of a Celtic Barn was revived for the new events centre. It reflects the regions history, is suited to the size needed, and complements the adjacent heritage hall. The Caledonians envisaged a building that would be a Celtic centre for the wider region, able to attract national and international events in the future. They wanted a simple structure that opens up to the park, and allows people to freely move through the building. Philip Higham’s design does just that. Huge timber trusses and timber doors dominate the interior, while multiple doors open out to wide verandas that continue to offer shelter. Two Celtic Windows designed by Simon Johnson from Waipu Museum reflect the heritage of the settlers, and their integration in this new land. Local businesses contributed hugely from the start with men, machines and materials all donated towards the foundations of the building. Interestingly, when the foundations were dug, the WW2 Home Guard Camp Site was found exactly where the Barn now sits. Locals have dug deep and donated $515,000 in cash and kind towards the Celtic barn and the Coronation Hall. Many suppliers contributed through discounts, and all donors will be acknowledged on a donor’s wall. The Great Hall of the Celtic Barn provides banquet seating for 400, 600 seated for concerts, school events etc, and a court for indoor sport. The Celtic Room is ideally sized for small weddings. The need for the Barn has been proven already with forward bookings in place for the Highland Games, Art n Tartan Wearable Arts show, pipe band concert, a country and western show, the annual school gala day, and several weddings. The Celtic Barn is a unique space that will shelter the entire community for many years to come.

A

wellbeing expo was introduced to the itinerary of Waipu in Tartan events two years ago to capture the wealth of expertise and enthusiasm of local natural health providers. The Waipu Apothecary has been an iconic part of the town for nearly 30 years selling Malcolm Harkers own brand of unique hand made Herbal Tonics, Elixirs and Lotions. This years event will be held at the new Waipu Natural Health Clinic in Cove Road opposite the Pizza Barn from 11am to 3pm. The clinic was opened by nutritionist Jan van der Lee in late 2014 after spending many months lovingly restoring the old Kauri building to create an ambience to help customers relax. She will be hosting the event and sharing her nutritional expertise. ‘Relaxation and Restoring a state of health’ forms the foundation of the event, giving people the chance to experience taster sessions and talk to practitioners about how the different modalities will help their specific needs. The range of therapies address issues from the tip of your toes to the top of your head for men, women and

children with expertise for babies, pregnant women, sports players and retirees. Come and talk to Reina Reilly about the extensive range of remedial massage treatments she can offer to rebalance the body providing pain relief and relaxation. France Prevost brings her passion and expertise in aromatherapy along with a range of creams, gels, lotions and balms. Karen McCann offers reflexology, massage and energy healing, while Glo Tredwell will help you to let go of negative beliefs using muscle testing techniques. Alastair Wait has over 20 years expertise in the Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) field; particularly effective for establishing and letting go of negative thought patterns. Nikki Ralph offers breathing and yoga expertise to balance the mind, body and soul, while Philippa Ross has a wealth of personal empowering tools to help balance the spiritual, emotional, mental and physical parts of yourself to feel, happy, healthy and whole. Achmed Abman has a range of tempting eastern oils and gifts to enrich your body and environment.

The Great Waipu Milk Off

L

ast year’s Great Waipu Milk Off was so hilarious that the locals are still talking about it a year later. This year, the team at YourVet promises to deliver an even bigger and better ‘Milk Off’ than ever before… more prizes, more entrants, more milk AND more whiskey!! Mike Macartney and Sue Palmer, the vets at YourVet, have lived in the area for 8 years. They have always enjoyed the Waipu in Tartan events and are very excited at the opportunity to host an event of their own, here in their home town. Morag and Agnes will be back – their competition milking udders dusted, primed, and ready to go. Check out the girls in action at last year’s milk off on our Facebook page. Anyone is welcome to enter the competition. You don’t need to be an experienced milker but you do need to be 18 years or older. Be warned, this is not for the dairy intolerant or for those who don’t enjoy a wee dram. It will get a little messy but don’t worry, aprons will be provided. There will be a series of heats, semifinals and a grand final, culminating in a prize for “the fastest milker in the shire” – a title currently held by Neil Boniface. And, whether you’re milking or not, there will be an additional Scottish related competition for everyone to enter so don your best tartan and come on down – you never know, you may win one of many other prizes up for grabs on the night.

Sausages will be sizzling, refreshments will be provided, as well as plenty of other prizes. This competition is like nothing you’ve ever seen before and promises to be one you’ll never forget so don’t miss out – if you would like to get your hands on Agnes or Morag, please reserve your place by calling in to YourVet on phoning them 09 432 0500. Kick off is at 6pm on Saturday, 11th July at the YourVet Clinic. Husband and wife team, Mike Macartney and Sue Palmer, made the leap into selfemployment and opened the YourVet clinic in November 2013. Since opening they have endeavoured to provide excellent veterinary care to all of their patients, large and small. Mike and Sue are continually striving to improve their services to their furry, woolly, hairy and feathered clients. With their stateof-the-art in-house laboratory equipment, along with an increasing range of on farm diagnostics available, Mike and Sue are able to provide and wide range of diagnostic testing to both their companion animal patients, and to the large animals of their farming clients.

Mike, Sue and their family, just love being part of the Waipu community. They have continued to generously support local charities and the Waipu carnival, and have just hosted their second calf rearing information evening which they offer free to anyone in the community.

And, just as they did last year, YourVet are offering free vaccination and ringing of calves and lambs being reared for Ag Day. Mike, Sue, and all of the team at YourVet, look forward to seeing you at their next community event on July 11th.

YourVet are now very excited to be able to offer digital x-rays for in-clinic use as well as for horses.

With 4 wheel-drive vehicles fully kitted out with all the gear required, YourVet is able to get to wherever they are needed in order to provide you with any veterinary service you may require.

Wearable Art - More Than You Think!

T

his year’s Art’N Tartan Wearable Art show will be bigger and better than ever. With a larger number of entries and a support crew who dance, sing, play bagpipes and beat drums, alongside juggling acts and circus clowns it promises to be the best yet. We are honoured to have the Hatea Kapapaka Group, winners of national awards on stage this year. The night is a moving mix of Maori and Celtic culture - tradition and fantasy. Held in the new Celtic Barn, Director Helen Frances is making full use of the large stage and high roof line. Lighting and music have always been one of the hall-marks of this production and this year will be no different. Tickets sell fast as this has become an iconic Waipu event which Northlanders do not want to miss. WOW has set the standard for Wearable art in New Zealand but entries in Waipu’s event hold just as much surprise and excitement to say nothing of originality. This year there will be a People’s Choice Award so that you can express your wish as an audience member. Three external judges will carry out the pre-judging on June 21st with further judging of the wow factor on the Friday night event. A matinee on Saturday at 2.00pm lets those who cannot get out at night see the entire show. Wonderful for children to see as well. The Awards night is pretty well sold out so be in fast to get a ticket for the other shows.
