Madeline Whittam

NZ Diploma in Sport, Recreation, and Exercise (Level 6)

“I’ve loved sports since I was little. Every weekend at home I’d be outside playing games. It grew from that into a passion.”

Madeline is currently studying the NZ Diploma in Sport, Recreation, and Exercise (Level 6) to turn her passion for sport into a fulfilling career.

“Once I complete my studies I want to go to Australia and work there for a while. Then when the time is right, I’d like to move back and put all my skills into High Performance Sport New Zealand and make it better for the next generation.”

Madeline’s found the courses have helped hone her passion and guide her in the right direction.

“There are a lot of papers in the course and that gives you a huge range of topics to explore. You might not like something at the start, but as you explore topics you can find a passion for something new.”

“There’s something for everyone, especially in the sport and recreation courses. We have people wanting to go into teaching, personal training, high-performance sport, strength and conditioning, and couching. And that’s just in one course. You can do anything here.”

“Everyone is hugely supportive. The tutors are just as invested in your study as your family is. They want you to succeed.”

It’s Not Weak to Speak

If you are worried about a friend who may be struggling with their mental health, here are some ways you can support them:

Sharing challenges and the ways we overcome them reminds people they are not alone and normalises these conversations into our everyday life.

If you are struggling with your mental health, it’s important to remember that your feelings are valid and you deserve support. If you think you could do with some support, try one of these options:

1. School counsellor: Your school counsellor is trained to help students with a variety of issues.

2. Mental health professionals: There are many mental health

professionals who can provide counseling and therapy. You can find a therapist through your school counsellor, family doctor, or online.

3. Try a helpline: If you are in crisis, there are helplines you can call for immediate help. There are also helplines and apps that can offer advice which you can find on our website www.voicesofhope.org.

1. Listen: Sometimes, all your friend needs is someone to listen to them. You don’t have to come up with solutions, you just have to give them a safe space for them to share without fear of judgement. It can be hard to reach out for help so if you feel comfortable, check in on your mates to make it easier for them.

2. Encourage them to seek help: Let your friend know that it’s okay to ask for help and offer to go with them to see a professional or help them find resources.

3. Be patient: Recovery takes time, and your friend may need your support for a while. Be patient and understanding.

Remember, taking care of your mental health is important, and seeking help when you need it is a sign of strength, not weakness. Take care of yourself and your friends, and don’t hesitate to reach out for help when you need it.

Voices of Hope is a mental health charity that spreads hope through the voices of lived experience.

Miya Wendt-Smith is in her first year of Whangarei A&P Society’s Farm Intern Programme & enjoying living and working on a Sheep and beef farm at Whangarei Heads. Miya is fiercely independent at 15 and combines her love of the outdoors and passion for horses into her daily work life on the farm. Miya’s favourite animal on farm is her new puppy Tonker, who she tells us is in training to become the world’s best farm dog!

What made you think about doing the farm intern programme? I grew up at the Heads on a lifestyle block and always loved the outdoors. I’ve worked with horses for most of my life, including at a show jumping stables when I was 14. I tried a retail job in town, but I knew I needed to work outdoors, I went stir crazy!

One of the A&P Committee, who lives in the area, told me about the programme. I thought this would be a perfect way of incorporating my love for the outdoors and work with horses. It’s been great so far. We use the horses for weekly mustering and checking stock. I love being out on the hills and my bosses bought an extra horse, Tom, just for me to use.

What is the biggest change from your previous learning experiences? Having to keep myself on time, there’s no-one else guiding you and keeping you on track. You have to keep focused and concentrate when there’s a lot going on around you. I’ve learnt to be thorough and go back and check everything I’m doing until I’m confident. Obviously, the other main difference is that you’re mostly outdoors instead of being in a classroom. I’m loving learning on the job.

What part does your farmer play? I have the best bosses ever. They take the time to teach and support me, I feel like I landed on the perfect farm. I’m 35 minutes from town and am living on my own so I’m enjoying learning to run a household and take care of myself. My bosses definitely keep an eye out for me too; getting meat packages dropped off every now and then has been a big bonus!

What is your favourite thing on your current farm? I love that it’s very diverse, we do everything on farm ourselves. Fencing, cropping, tractor work, stock management, everything! I also love living where I work, its easy as I’m too young to get my licence.

What advice would you give to school leavers? Always be reliable,

hardworking and on time. And get a really good CV, just jump at any opportunity as any experience you can get could land you your dream job! I’d highly recommend the course to anybody; you don’t have to have a background in farming. I’ve met so many people and had so many cool opportunities!

How have you found attending class on a Monday & the support from your tutors? Class has been good, we’ve been learning practical stuff and it’s different to what you’re learning on farm, it’s very structured. The tutors are very supportive, always there to help and we’re always their main priority. The other interns have become my friends too, in-andoutside of class. It’s cool to be going through it together. I’m one of the youngest but I’ve become a bit of a class mother to the others.

What’s the long-term dream? I think my dream is the same as most of the others on the course. Firstly, to complete my level 3 and then level 4 NZ Certificates in Agriculture. Then eventually to be confident in managing and running my own farm. I’d love to get some work experience on a big station down South, getting experiences on other farms, learning from different people and then coming back home.

Building great careers locally

The electricity supply industry will play a vital role in New Zealand’s future, with exciting career options for young talent.

At Northpower we are committed to building great careers for local young people through our trade and engineering cadetship programmes, both with pathways into full–time employment.

Northpower was thrilled to welcome the next generation of Lines and Cables and Northtec trade cadets to the Northpower whanau on 17 of April. This group of cadets were selected through an online application process, then invited to attend an open day which included a speed meet session with our managers. Following the open day, shortlisted candidates were invited to faceto-face interviews.

From more than 95 applicants, 14 successful cadets started their employment journey with our Northpower whanau. The Trades Cadets programme is an initial eight week work readiness programme which includes the NZ Certificate Level 2 in Electricity Supply along with Northpower works site and work practice familiarisation.

The programme is being hosted at the Te Pūkenga Northtec campus. The training is provided by specialist training partner Lines and Cables Limited. A cultural competency workshop, and a noho marae visit will be hosted by Te Pūkenga Northec later in May. At the end of the eight weeks, the cadets will be work ready and will join their teams on 19 June.

The programme is the first of many planned, with an aim of training 50 cadets in 2023 and 100 next year. The Northtec campus will be providing classrooms.

Our Engineering Cadets programme is being offered in collaboration with Te Pūkenga, offering cadets the opportunity to complete residential study alongside on the job learning to achieve their NZ Diploma in Engineering (Electrical) Level 6. This course will be commencing later in 2024.

Certificate in Electrical Engineering Theory (Level 3) Jorja Collings

“I’ve always been fascinated with the trades. I love the idea of doing a hands-on job. I think the trades is a career that you always going to need. I also like the idea of a job that I can use at home to help myself and my family and friends. I think it’s a great career. From personal experience, I think that there is always a need for electricians.”

Jorja is currently studying the Certificate in Electrical Engineering Theory (Level 3) with plans to move straight on to an apprenticeship in the industry once she’s finished.

“I love all of the practical aspects of the course. I love learning new things. But the best part has been learning all the science. I hated science in school so I never thought that I would be enjoying every second of it, but I am really enjoying physics.”

“I think in high school when I was doing science it was irrelevant to me. Whereas now it's connected to something I’m passionate about. In high school, you just have to learn what they teach, and you assume you won’t use it outside of school. But now everything I learn is related to my future career and it’s all relevant.”

“If you’re considering studying at NorthTec then give it a go. There are so many options and a lot of support here so there’s no reason not to try. “

Andrew Walker Bachelor of Nursing

“I’ve always wanted to work in healthcare and be able to help people. I think it’s a privilege to be involved in such a meaningful way and to be able to contribute to their lives at a time when they aren’t feeling great.”

“I’ve been getting so much support form the tutors. It’s nice having small classes and getting to know the tutor personally. You’re not just a number or a blank face in a lecture hall. You wouldn’t get that at a larger university.”

When asked if the course has impacted him in anyway, so far. Andrew had some pretty clear ideas.

“I think this opened my mind to how different circumstances can impact on people's health and how their health condition can impact on their life. It's a cycle. Nothing happens in isolation. I now see how people get into these cycles and why its so hard to get out of them.”

“It’s been interesting being male and going into nursing. It’s still very female dominated in the classroom. But since I’ve been on the wards, I’ve seen there’s a lot more male nurses out there these days. Everyone is great they, though are very invested in me succeeding and everyone is there to help each other.”
