Kamo: Village Community and Business Hub Nestled in the valley of a one million year old volcanic dome, sprinkled with hidden hot springs and home to one of Northland’s first railway lines, there’s a lot more to Kamo than meets the eye. Historically, Kamo was an industrial hub, with a thriving coal mine and a population only slightly smaller than Whangarei city’s own. Boundaries were finally merged in the 1960’s, making Kamo an official district of Whangarei: and today, this vibrant community is a hugely popular residential and commercial centre, known for it’s friendly business environment and supportive village feel.
Kamo: a warm welcome to new businesses
For new business owner Karen Newberry, bringing her dream to life in the small, yet welcoming community of Kamo has been one of the best decisions she’s ever made. ‘Kamo Retro’ is one of Kamo’s
newest businesses, devoted to all things quirky, kitschy, and of course, retro! The colourful and enticing shop has already gathered quite a following, with Kamo High School students often searching her racks for clothing and décor that is enjoying a second revival. ‘Bringing my passion to life was quite a big step for me,’ says Karen of the Grant Street business. ‘Having a physical store in this retail climate was a daunting prospect; but we’ve found that the community here has truly supported my vision. Whether just stopping by to browse, to say hello, or to make a purchase, Kamo residents and the local business community have all played a part in my venture taking off. We couldn’t be happier with the choice to bring our dream to life right here in Kamo.’ Paul Batchelder, owner of wellestablished Northland business UIT
Technology Solutions, recently made the move from central Whangarei to Kamo; and his experiences have been in much the same vein as Kamo Retro. ‘Working in Kamo provides the facilities we need to live well and work hard!’ says Paul of the move. ‘We have enjoyed growth in our business since moving to the area while maintaining our managed services & IT helpdesk offerings across New Zealand.’ Kamo continues to welcome new businesses; and the support shown by both the community and local established businesses is nothing short of wonderful.

For established business owners too, the experience of living and working within this supportive community has been positive. For Melanie and Alan Williams, of Maintenance & General Engineering Ltd, the decision to locate their yard and facilities in Kamo rather than Whangarei city has led to great rewards. We moved our rural based business to Kamo in 2012,’ says Alan, ‘and it’s
been brilliant and we have not looked back since. We chose Kamo because we saw an opportunity for an engineering business to fill the need of this area locally. Business has taken off – people in Kamo really supported our business right from the beginning.’ Alan is quick to praise the support MGE has received from other businesses in the area and who they choose to support likewise for trades and services, citing many examples where local companies prioritise MGE for engineering and maintenance work; strengthening local connections and fostering a true sense of business community. For Alan and Melanie, the choice they made back in 2012 has led to success with both family life and business growth. ‘We have lived in Kamo, work in Kamo, and our kids attend school in Kamo: It’s awesome here!’ For recent arrivals Mike Ridling and Wayne Dean, who took over ownership of the Kamo Hammer Hardware in April 2016, operating a well-established institution in

4 such a tight-knit community has been quite an experience. ‘We’ve found the people here just awesome!’ says Wayne of the Kamo community. ‘The customers often walk in and ask our staff who the new owners are, before coming over and introducing themselves. This business has been here for over 22 years; there’s a strong loyal customer base and we are thrilled to be able to continue building on those relationships.’ Mike and Wayne were also quick to see the benefits of operating a business from Kamo. ‘Locality-wise, Kamo offers so much convenience compared to Whangarei city. People are always saying how glad they are they don’t have to make a trip into Whangarei: which can easily take up to an hour, an hour and a half. The businesses here offer pretty much everything a person could need: without the inconvenience.’
North City Traders: original owner back after 20 years away
For some business residents, the pull of Kamo is too much to withstand. Peter Ridling, who first set up North City Traders on Wakelin Street over 20 years ago, never actually had the opportunity to run his own creation. Within 4 months of starting up the well-known business, Peter was made an offer he couldn’t refuse – and so he sold up and continued with his other business ventures elsewhere. Move forward 20 years, and Peter has
finally come home to roost. He was offered the opportunity to purchase his business back again, and it wasn’t long before he was back in the driver’s seat. Having been in the second-hand industry for over 35 years, Peter really knows his stuff; and for those who haven’t entered North City Traders for a while, a visit should be on the cards. For Peter, coming back into the Kamo community has been a wonderful experience. ‘I’m excited to be back in the community, I have strong ties in Kamo, and I know a lot of the businesses and a lot of the residents here. The community has always supported North City Traders, because that’s just the way it is around here. That’s a big part of what makes Kamo so special, we all support each other.’ Peter is enjoying being back in the old shop, and he has plenty up his sleeve to keep the business interesting; with new stock, a new layout, and a not-so-new owner!
Kamo High School praises Kamo community
Intermediate and Kamo High School Principals meet regularly to discuss any issues facing our students and generally work together to help each other. The business community generously support our students with work experience placements and financial scholarships. The wider community often make the time to email or contact the school to praise students who have shown responsibility and maturity in things such as giving up a seat at the bus bay for an older person, or helping a young mum onto the bus with her pram. Our local iwi, Ngatiwai, offer practical support to our students in every way they can and our Kaumatua, Tepania Kingi, has their support with our developing Tikanga Maori. Kamo Cricket has invested in a new cricket pitch on our school sports ground so the whole community can enjoy Saturday matches on a first-class wicket. The Kamo Swimming Club is continually encouraging children and young people to learn to swim in our 33m pristine swimming
pool. Our gymnasia are used extensively by Johnny and Aaron Sadler to encourage youth participation in basketball. The CEW (Community Education) has an extensive programme of evening classes covering everything from Beekeeping to Thai Cooking, on week nights and some weekends, which are well attended by members of the community. Young apprentices in the area meet weekly at school to ensure their on-going paperwork is accurate and that their progress through their chosen trades is smooth and manageable. We are proud to be part of a community that is very supportive, responsive and connected.’ Kamo is also home to fabulous cafés, eateries, retail outlets and recreational facilities; including a well-established sports ground and beautiful bush walks. Doing Good in the
Z
Hood
Kamo is proud to be a part of a vibrant and growing Kamo community, over the past nine years we have seen many changes including becoming “Z”, a Kiwi owned and operated business. Doing business the Kiwi way is what we are proud of. In particular our support of local community groups through the “Good in the Hood” programme. Each year for the past 4 years we have given away $4,000 p.a. to local community groups to help continue the many varied and amazing things they do within the community every day. The recipients are decided by our customers who get to vote for their favourite charity or community group every time they visit Z Kamo throughout the month. Z Kamo also has available another $1,000 pa, to be used throughout the year for other initiatives and to support small local requests for fundraising and other support. We also continue our support through other avenues during the year, continuing to support Northable LYNX by purchasing Firewood from them that we sell on site, so every
bag bought is ongoing support for Northable LYNX creating jobs! The majority of the staff at Z Kamo also live in the Kamo area or close by, and we continue our support our staff through ongoing education and training, providing NZQA Retail Level 2 to 4 qualifications on the job learning at no cost to them. Our latest initiative in conjunction with TEC is an 11 week course to further up skill our valuable teams in business communication, development and leadership, helping them to grow as people. We are proud to support ongoing education at no cost to our people and their futures.

Family Restaurant New management make big changes

nnes and Jacqui are now the new owners of Coalies Kamo, formerly known as Coalminers Bar and Grill. They are both extremely excited about their new business opportunity. Innes, previously a truck owner and driver for over 38 years is used to working very long hours. Jacqui his partner,previously worked in hospitality with both of them often having time apart. They thought it was time for a change, so Innes sold his truck and brought the bar. Jacqui had previously been working at Coalminers and loved the good atmosphere in the bar, but over the years it had become a bit neglected. Their passion is to build and grow the family restaurant and return it back to its former glory of the days when Len and Anne founded the bar. “We brought this restaurant because of the patrons, they are the whole reason we love it so much to be able to share a part of their lives and they have also become great friends” says Innes.
“We are a family restaurant and sports bar. We don’t necessarily know what’s happening on the news, but can tell you who’s winning the games. Our focus is on dinning and supporting our local community as much as we can. We also provide sponsorship to the Kamo Rugby Club, Midwestern Rugby Club, Kamo Football Club, Tiki Football Club, Northland Golf Club, Kamo Bowling Club, City Cricket and our own Pool Team, which has been a real pleasure to get involved with all these teams and build solid relationships. “We are a proud Lion Red Bar with dining area, Garden Bar, Pool table, 11 gaming machines and sports playing all the time. We also have board games available to keep the kids busy while you relax with a quiet drink. We have a great new menu, with a wide range of options” says Jacqui. They have also recently installed a new pizza oven and without any surprise it’s becoming a real hit. Kamo High School Students Excel
Congratulations to our senior students in 2016 who gained Merit or Excellence Year Level endorsements or Course Endorsements in the NCEA examinations. To gain an NCEA certificate endorsed with Excellence a student must gain at least 50 credits at Excellence at the level of the certificate or higher.

It’s Never too late
to Learn! K amo residents are fortunate to have a range of evening classes and weekend workshops available right on their doorstep with courses running at the local high school. The courses are managed by Community Education Whangarei and make good use of Kamo High School’s facilities after hours. The programme has been part of Kamo High School for over 30 years and is well supported by not only the local community but the whole of Whangarei and surrounding districts. In fact students regularly travel from as far afield as Kerikeri and Mangawhai to attend workshops. The courses are aimed at adults and provide an opportunity for people to try something new, whether for selfimprovement, to up-skill for work, or for pleasure and relaxation. Both vocational and recreational courses are offered from computers to art, cooking, languages, music, dance and beekeeping; there is something to appeal to most tastes. Business courses are suitable for staff training purposes or a recreational course could provide the opportunity for a team bonding session. Students attend courses for a variety of reasons: to upskill for work,
to learn new skills or some are simply looking for new experiences and a chance to meet people with similar interests. The CEW tutoring team is made up of a range of individuals from trained teachers and business professionals to those simply wishing to share their hobby or interest with others. The one thing that the tutors all have in common is their passion to share their knowledge and expertise. Kamo Intermediate School supporting the community
K
amo Intermediate School is an integral part of the Kamo community. We are a place where students are actively involved and have high expectations for themselves, as described in one of our mantras “to be the best that you can be”. We provide a wide range of opportunities for the students, both in school and the wider community. Our wonderful environment inspires us to aim for excellence. Our school facilities are regularly used by community groups. Students are encouraged to develop and extend their talents across a range of opportunities including: learning to play a variety of musical instruments, performing arts, visual arts, photography, kapahaka, learning languages, technology extensions, boat building skills, running a radio station, sports, Pacific Island cultural trips, leadership, environmental projects, global awareness, AgriKids, school magazine and running various other school and community projects. Some examples of significant achievements in 2016 were: • Year 7 and Year 8 Mathex competition winners. • Receiving two of the three major awards in the Regional Science Fair (selected from Years 7 - 13).
• 4th in New Zealand at the National AgriKids competition in Timaru. • A medal in the ICAS English assessment and numerous distinctions in international competitions. • The highest score in New Zealand in the Otago Problem Solving challenge. • Numerous representations in regional and national sporting codes. • An outstanding kapahaka group. • High quality student art works displayed in prominent areas around Whangarei. Our school curriculum provides students with opportunities to make connections and be excited about learning. Digital technology is used widely to support learning. The open collaborative learning spaces are used creatively to ensure learning is social, open, engaging and relevant. The usual teacher to child ratio applies and children benefit from having more than one teacher to support them in their learning space. Teachers benefit from having the opportunity to learn from each other and having the opportunity to problem-solve together. There is a shared responsibility for learning. The learning is being made increasingly visible for teachers, learners, parents and whanau at Hurupaki School, and students are supported as active learners taking an increasing level of responsibility for their learning. Hangar Frames and Gallery
M
egan and Barry Squire purchased Frames picture framing business in Kamo in 2006. They changed the business name to Hangar Frames and Gallery after the aeroplane hangar they were renovating to live in. Hangar gallery specialises in showcasing the diverse talents of Northland artists. The gallery has had many interesting and varied group shows like the popular ‘miniature’ art summer
exhibition as well as shows of individual artists including Chris Wilkie and the late Jo Hardy. Exhibition opening evenings have proved to be successful and entertaining with music and poetry performed. Megan is a trained picture framer while Barry is an artist and craftsman builder. Over the years they have framed many intriguing objects including a century old wine bottle, love letters, a large prison key, and antique
kete and korowai. All Black jerseys continue to be a popular framing item. Hangar Frames and Gallery are located at 402 Kamo Rd, but in late March they will be moving to a heritage villa at 14 Cross St in the Regent. The villa is currently undergoing renovation to provide a gallery area and restore aspects of the house back to its original condition. There will be car parking on site and disabled access, and Megan and Barry welcome visitors.
Megan and Barry have enjoyed the Kamo business and residential community who have been friendly and supportive during their 10 years on the corner. Megan says, “it has been very rewarding being part of a close knit community and we will miss the friendly faces. The Northland Golf Club
supports the Kamo community T
he Northland Golf Club initially started out in 1932 as the Raumanga Golf Club. Set on the old Murdoch property, it lasted just 12 months before shifting its base to Whau Valley. It was renamed The Whau Valley Golf Club and opened on 20th April 1933 on land located between Whau Valley and Kamo. In 1963, due to increasing costs from rates, the decision was made to sell and shift the club into a more rural location. It was sold for £55,000 to Duncan Ross and Jack James and the move was made to the present site purchased from Vernon Lilley. The new clubhouse was built by Haigh Builders the following year - 1964. The Northland Golf Club (Inc) celebrated its opening day in the current location on Saturday 27th February 1965. The foresight of those members 50 years ago, who when faced with the prospect of creating
and developing a new course to continue to play golf, did not shy away from the task but created what is now a superb golf course. Since its inception many native trees (55 varieties) have been planted which are now of an age to provide good shelter and of a height and size to hinder wayward shots. 50 years ago - July 1967,with the advent of decimal currency, green fees were increased from 75c to $1 for weekends and holidays and weekdays 50c to 75c. Now green fees are $35.00 for members of other clubs and $45.00 for non golf club members. Full membership for a year is $750.00 and 9 hole membership $550.00. Being a golfer at Northland Golf Club gives you the opportunity to play golf on a course that caters for the range of club golfers. A golf course that has the variety of golf holes to challenge and tease the club golfer. It is a golf course that has enough character to ensure that the very low handicapper has to play well to tame it, if they ever do. It is a golf course that has continued to mature and with the
nurturing it receives from our experienced and capable greens staff continues to present as one of the top golfers’ course here in Northland and most definitely in Whangarei. The 6 bay driving range which is open 7 days a week enables members and the public to sharpen their skills and/or release their frustrations. There are a range of playing opportunities for members and visitors available during the week. Along with the usual Saturday club days for men and women there are various playing options during week. For men we have 2 “schools”. Tuesday and Thursday. The attractive feature of the Tuesday school is you turn up, pay your daily fee ($6.00) and you go into a four arranged by the organiser and a multi-tee start begins at 11 am. This differs from the Thursday School where you turn up between 10.30 and 12.00 make up your own four. At the end of the day in both schools anyone who scores 36 or more stable ford points picks up a prize from the prize table.
Women have a similar groups playing and these tee off at 8.30 on both Tuesday and Wednesday. On Wednesday we have a strong field of up to 40 men and women 9 hole golfers who play in a completion each week as well as a smaller group of 9 hole golfers who play on a Monday morning. Once you have completed your golfing adventure you can relax in the café and enjoy a range of café food, a tea or coffee or even a beer.

Radius Rimu Park – a home away from home

n the heart of Kamo and surrounded by beautifully landscaped grounds is a thriving village with plenty of fun, laughter and contentment within. This is the home to over 50 residents aged between 57 and 98 who, between themselves and their families, have chosen to live here. Radius Rimu Park Rest Home is where it’s at and here the focus is on individualised care while being inclusive of family and friends. Greg is happy to be back ‘home’ and able to spend more time with family members.
