Wearestartinginaprettystrongplace economically:Whileitisn’talwaysreported, productivitycontinuestobegood.Our unemploymentrateisatanear-recordlowand people’sincomesaregrowingatthehighestrate recorded.Therearenowlessthan99,000New ZealandersreceivingJobseekerWorkReady –thefirsttimenumbershavedippedbelow 100,000sincethepandemicbegan.We’vealso seenthenumberofpeoplereceivingamain benefitcontinuetofallyear-on-year.


Whilewe’reallworriedbypriceincreases, againwhatisn’talwaysreportedismedian weeklyearningsfromwagesandsalarieshave alsoincreased8.8%intheyeartoJune2022 –thelargestannualincreasesincerecords began,andaheadofinflationat7.3%-and women’smedianweeklyearningsactually increasedby9.9%.Thisisarealstrengthin oureconomyandkeepsbothfamiliesand businessstrong.
Theworkthatpeopledomatterstoo.We wantaskilled,high-wageworkforce,soour Governmenthasdeliberatelysupported morepeopleintoeducationandtraining.I’m reallyproudthat2,015Northlandershave beenhelpedintoapprenticeshipsthrough ourApprenticeBoostprogramme. We’vealso

reinstatedtheTrainingIncentiveAllowanceto helpparentsgetqualifiedwhileraisingkids.
Withtheglobaleconomicuncertainty,we knowthatinvestinginprogrammeslikethe ApprenticeshipBoost,whichsupportsemployers totakeonandkeepapprentices,hasbeenreally important.Withoutthatinvestment,werisked losingourapprenticesandfacingamassive skillsshortage,ashappenedafterthe2008 GlobalFinancialCrisis.Instead,apprenticeships aremorethan50%higherthanwhenwecame intoGovernment,andwehave20,000more constructionworkersthanayearago.
Recentlyalocalemployersharedthat theirfirstapprenticehadqualifiedthrough theprogramme.Theywereproudtosay “Hisqualifyingwageis$33ph,plus$1phtool

allowanceandtimeandahalfovertime.Doing 45to50hoursperweekheisdoingokayfora youngladstraightfromschool.”
Askilledworkforcemeanswe’reableto continuedeliveringbetterinfrastructure andmorehomesaroundthecountry.That’s particularlyimportantforWhangareiwhere Governmentinvestmentininfrastructureand home-buildingmeansthatthereisgoingtobe abigdemandforconstructionworkersforyears tocome.
Ournear-billiondollarcommitmenttothe hospitalre-buildmeanswe’llbeneedingabout 500workers.MeanwhileKaingaOrahasamajor socialhousingprogrammeunderwaywith hundredsofnewbuildsinthepipeline.
OntopoftrainingmoreNewZealanders withtheskillsbusinessesneed,we’vealso rebalancedourimmigrationtomakeiteasierfor localbusinessestofillgapsbyhiringhighlyskilledpeoplefromoverseas.
Alotofmyyearthisyearwillbeabout coordinatingwiththeGovernmentagencies, localconstructioncompaniesandtraining providerstoensureWhangareigetsthebest outofthemassivework-streamcomingour way.Whatevertheworldthrowsatus,we’ve gotaclearplanandalltheparts–training andinfrastructureinvestment-areworking together.Nowwekeepgoing.
