TIN MEN - NEW FATHER AND DAUGHTER BUSINESS

IS OPENING AND HERE TO STAY

F

ather and daughter, William and Nicola Mulholland are trying to make their mark in Whangarei and the North. Nicola has made the desirable move to come and live permantly in Whangarei. “We have leased out a huge shed and yard at 382 Lower Port Road,” Nicola says. On the 27th October, Tin Men will open its doors for the first time in Whangarei for everyone to sell their scrap metal, cars and machinary. Not only are we very excited for the opportunity to buy scrap metal in the north, but we are also very keen to sell to the public as well. The scrap metal purchasing and selling is a real joy and it is true that “ one mans rubbish is another mans treasure.” Tin Men have competitive prices and wish to help others in the community. Tin Men wish to have a donation bin for the Onerahi Army and Air Force Cadetts. People who would like to donate or have very little scrap will be helping the youth of Whangarei. Instead of paying to get rid of your old fridge or mircowave at the dump, the Cadetts will be paid for the scrap metal. “I hope that more kids will be able to paritapate in these fun filled and educational events.” Tin Men love dealing with the farming community and want to thank all those who have used our services and welcomed us to the North. Batteries are very well priced in the market, while steel is the most exciting commodity whether its roofing iron, fencing wire or old trucks and beams. There is a lot to acheive to successfully start and operate a scrap yard, we are still at the early stages. A weigh bridge has been set up to purchase copper, lead,

brass, steel and other scrap metal. Tin Men have equipment to unload trailers and trucks. Our opening hours will be 8am to 5pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 2pm on Saturday. For appointments outside these hours please contact 0800 tin men ext 3 or nicola on 0272846636. Nicola says that she loves dealing with people and scrap metal. Purchasing working and broken machinary is also a passion of hers. We are selling as well as purchasing farm bridges, tractors, trucks, diggers, dozers, forklifts, containers and industrial equipment. Please feel free to come down and visit. “Workplace safety is very important to us, so please sign in at the office and covered shoes must be worn also there is also no smoking in the premise.” William explains as the are sharp objects in the yard and accidents can be avoided. William is an expert on demoliton and works on removal of building, boats and large machinary. Recycling tyres is also a goal Nicola and William are interest in. For quotes or prices on machinary, demolition or cars, batteries, copper, stainless, steel and other scrap metal, please contact the team at Tin Men or come and visit. We would love the opportunity to meet and work with you all. Have a look at our website www.Tin Men.co.nz

THE WESTPAC NORTHLAND BUSINESS EXCELLENCE AWARDS

contribute to making our region a better place

N

Z Chambers of Commerce Northland has been organising and coordinating the Northland Business Excellence Awards for at least 30 years. For the last 12 years Westpac has been the event’s major sponsor. They provide an opportunity to celebrate business excellence and the role it plays in our community. Through business, countless individuals can apply their talents to achieve their own aspirations and provide service for others. If we can celebrate and respect these people, and foster a better understanding of the contribution business makes to the wider community, then this will go a long way to inspiring more young people pursue their own aspirations. Many of Northland’s prominent business people past and present have played an active role in shaping the

region through both their commercial enterprises and through their civic activities. These awards provide a great opportunity for Northlanders to celebrate those amongst us who have made significant contributions to making our region a better place. Entrants in the Westpac Northland Business Excellence Awards are categorised based on their number of fulltime employees as we believe businesses of similar scale should be doing similar things no matter the nature of their products or services. As well as being considered for the category based on their size, businesses will also be eligible for the More FM customer Choice Award, the ACC Health and Safety in the Workplace, the NRC Sustainable Business Award and the Top Energy Not for Profit Organisation Award. Unlike in the marketplace, in the awards businesses are not so much

competing against other entrants but against a set of performance indicators. An entrant’s performance will be rigorously tested against a number of key criteria and that business’s vision and strategic plan. Success cannot be measured without a business first having set clear goals. In many cases these are closely aligned to the personal aspirations of the people and families who own these businesses. We believe there is no wrong time to enter the awards as businesses are or should be constantly examining how they operate, monitor their results and modify their behaviour accordingly. Many entrants comment that they are initially quite daunted by the process when they first read the entry form but soon realise

Tony Collins, CEO Chambers of Commerce Northland that much of what it contains is things that they do and can be easily answered. We are committed to making the process as easy as possible for entrants through individual support and group workshops.

MARINE NORTH

T

he team at Marine North were honoured and very proud to be awarded the Excellence in business Medium Business award. To then be named the winner or the Northland Business excellence Supreme Award was very humbling and a huge endorsement for the hard work the team has put in. Marine North has a strong team and compete in the boat, motor sales and service sector of the marine industry. Our position is reinforced by the products, great brands and services that we deliver. Our workshop service is delivered by fully qualified technicians and we have the only fully qualified workshop for our Brands in Northland. Our Sales team has over 50 years of sales experience and we are unique in Northland, in that we have two dedicated salesmen with admin support for sales and finance. We have support from key relationships with our suppliers that includes product back up and warranty as well as technical. The key to our award entry was that we did not re-invent the wheel, we listed our processes and focused on what was in our business plan. Our strategic plan identified the need for a bigger premises and we have achieved that when we moved earlier this month into our brand new shop at 50 Kioreroa Rd.

WOW!

During a business planning session last year we identified the need for outside assistance including training. We Brainstormed as owners to see what was missing, and identified that we needed clarity around our vision and strategic plan and would benefit from assistance with financial planning. We partnered with Leah Peacock from Sudburys where a gap analysis was completed and she proceeded to drag the strategic plan out of our heads, challenge our thinking and clarify/ document our plan. By challenging the where we are ‘now’ and where we want to be ‘desired’ a list of actions was identified and is followed up monthly. Winning the supreme award is a great confirmation that our processes and governance within the business is on track and that we have a team who can deliver! We are a local business staffed by Northland locals who understand the needs of our customers and take pride and great satisfaction in matching our boats to our “customers dream” Marine North, locally owned, top brands, great service, awesome team. We take pride in going the extra mile for our customers. Northlands top boat dealer supplying Yamaha, Stabicraft, Fyran, Evinrude and the factory outlet for BlackDog Cat. WESTPAC - IT’S ALL ABOUT BUSINESS EXCELLENCE T he 2014 Westpac Northland Business Excellence Awards are about searching for Business Excellence. What is Business Excellence? It can cover many aspects, such as having strong direction, strategic planning and purpose. It involves excellence in understanding and managing customer relationships as well as relationships with suppliers, staff and key stakeholders. It means having robust systems and processes across all aspects of the business. It also includes not only setting clear direction and goals but then monitoring and measuring progress. As you can see, Business Excellence is about getting a collection of disciplines right. One in particular that we will explore today is having clear purpose and direction. In my view,

this is a critical part in achieving a high performance culture with committed and happy staff. As a member of a team, I am more likely to put a decent effort into paddling the waka if I know where it is we want to go and why. More importantly, the why needs to make sense and have meaning. If I reflect back over my career, I have always been most energised and dedicated to an organisation where leadership was strong and there was a clear purpose. It was also important that this purpose was about something bigger than simply driving revenue growth or getting more customers. It is no coincidence that the years when I have felt the highest level of commitment have been back in the North within the Westpac Business Banking environment. We were

fortunate over the years to have strong leadership and an organisation with a strong social conscience. As a local team, we collectively believed in the philosophy of taking a long term approach to everything we did. This drive not only to succeed and grow our business but also to make a positive contribution to our customers and Northland as a whole has made for a stable and successful team. When we feel that what we are doing each day is making a positive difference, we tend to put maximum effort into it. When we put maximum effort in, we usually succeed. Setting clear vision and strategic direction is an important part of business success. If you employ staff, ensuring that the vision and direction is understood by all is also important. However, the bit that

Images taken at the 2014 Westpac Northland Business Excellence Awards

often creates a great culture and working environment is when we can make that vision, strategic direction and subsequent purpose have meaning that we as individuals can connect with.

PAPER MAKERS T

he Papermill Charitable Trust has been in operation in Whangarei for 25 years. We are extremely pleased with our achievements at The Westpac Northland Business Excellence Awards 2014. We won the ‘Best Not for Profit Organisation Award’ and joint won the ‘Sustainable Business Award’. In 1989 fibre artist and papermaker Rhondda Rutherford-Dunn conceived and researched a project focusing on papermaking for people with intellectual disabilities as a forum for education, improving self-esteem, therapy and artistry. The Papermill’s concept is simple and its focus total. It is committed to its artists. All have the opportunity to specialise and produce items of quality and uniqueness. The Papermill incorporates and recycles used materials and plant fibres into beautiful paper. This in turn is made into a line of stationery, packaging, wedding invitations and art works of an international standard. Each participant has an individual learning agreement which outlines and measures their achievements within the creative process of papermaking. We look for an ability (however small)

to concentrate on and develop, so that each person has a niche in the total process. The Mill is classed as a ‘Creative Space’ and it is run on the format of a small business to give the people the opportunity to learn a wide variety of skills. Apart from the paper making side, there are such tasks as meeting and greeting customers, office procedures, photocopying, cash handling, teaching, phone answering, cleaning, in short everything that needs to be done in a small business. The participants get the opportunity to take ownership of their small business and their ‘jobs’. We provide the following programs: • Special-needs creative training • Transition Services • Community groups • School groups • Papermaking workshops The Papermill 38 Kamo Road, Whangarei Ph. 09 459 1 459 http://www.thepapermill.co.nz/ https://www.facebook.com/ thepapermill.co.nz

The Papermill is a charming place where artists with disabilities craft beautiful paper to international standards. Using recycled products like paper, cloth, flowers and weeds, the Papermakers produce handmade paper which is made into a line of stationery, packaging, wedding invitations and art works that will impress. Visitors watch the paper making processes, or make a sheet of handmade paper under the guidance of a skilled tutor. Just about anything is possible at The Papermill. SAFE BUSINESSES ‘SPOTLIGHTED’ TO HELP GROW SAFETY CULTURE E ncouraging safer workplaces, with the ultimate aim of reducing the number of work-related injuries, is why ACC is again proud to be supporting the Northland Business Excellence Awards. ACC sponsors the ACC ‘Workplace Safety Award’, which recognises innovative or exemplary examples of workplace safety culture, systems and procedures. “New Zealand has a high rate of work-related injuries compared to similar countries overseas” says ACC’s General Manager of Injury Prevention, Dr Megan McKenna. “However, there’s now a much more integrated approach being taken to address this, and it’s encouraging to see more businesses giving workplace safety the attention it deserves. “Last year saw an important step forward with the launch of the new Crown entity, WorkSafe New Zealand, and this has brought a real focus to the task at hand. “ACC is committed to working closely with WorkSafe New Zealand and the business community, so we can align our efforts, make good use of our respective strengths and

do all we can to help foster a safety culture in workplaces up and down the country.” Dr McKenna says that by shining the spotlight on Northland businesses that are making their workplaces safer, ACC hopes to encourage others to follow in their footsteps. “The Awards provide an opportunity to showcase the fantastic things being done by many businesses to improve their workplace safety here in Northland, and we hope this will inspire other

businesses to make similar changes in their own workplaces.” In total, there are eight business award evenings around New Zealand between May and November that feature an ACCsponsored workplace safety award. Work-related injuries are a priority area that ACC is investing in as part of its injury prevention work. As well as sponsoring business awards, ACC provides workplace health and safety advice directly to businesses, it develops targeted injury prevention

ACC works closely with WorkSafe New Zealand and the business community

campaigns, and offers levy discounts tied to safety performance. “We get to see first-hand the huge impact that injuries can have on people’s lives, and we want to do all we can to ensure more New Zealanders don’t become injury statistics” says Dr McKenna. “The Northland Business Excellence Awards are just one of the ways we’re reaching out to the local community, celebrating successes and sharing our safety message.”

The judges said… “Northcom ICT has created a niche product which targets the SME market, a market which has traditionally been difficult to address.Their managed services are very cost effective and remove the hassle of IT ownership from small businesses, which represent the bulk of the Northland economy. They have taken care not to over-extend themselves in the start-up stage until they are confident that systems and processes are scalable. As would be expected, their use of information technology underpins their business model very effectively. They are now planning the next phase of growth with the introduction of a sales person. What is exciting about this business is the potential it offers to other Northland Businesses to increase productivity and performance.”

Northcom ICT would like to thank all its customers for their support. We could not have achieved this award without you.

“We are your IT department!”

STAY CLOSE, GO FAR WITH NORTHTEC By studying business at NorthTec, you can stay local but gain a qualification to take you anywhere you want. Nancy Te Whata – Bachelor of Applied Management

Aaron Hooper – Bachelor of Applied Management

“I was looking at going to work in Australia but realised that all I knew was horses so I decided I needed to study to upskill. I did business admin at the Kerikeri campus. I really enjoyed it and it changed my outlook.” Nancy’s life was previously very involved in horses. “I represented New Zealand with horses and my experience was that if you work at something you get the results. Doing the business admin course made me realise that in the work world, having the qualifications is more important than having just experience, so I’ve gone on to do the degree down here at Whangarei. “What I loved most about the course is seeing its relevance to everyday life. Management touches on so many different subjects and as a manager you’re dealing with the overview as well as the detail.”

“After 20 years in the banking industry I wanted a change. I was concerned that I didn’t have a degree so was more susceptible to the ebb and flow of the tides of employment. Aaron was surprised at how easy the tutors made it for him as a mature student to re-enter study. “The processes were so streamlined and the tutors are so accessible and passionate about their subject. “They challenged us sometimes to change our way of thinking. As part of the course we had to audit a small business. This forced us out of our comfort zone because we had to create new relationships and networks which were part of building our future. “I was 39 when I started my study so my career path has been different from most. I’ve learnt that we’re never too old to change, to learn, and to progress. Don’t let age ever become a barrier.”
