The college search process is complex—and it can turn stressful for you and your student if you aren’t equipped with the right tools. I’d love to take a moment to share with you my top five tips for a successful and more enjoyable college search. I hope this will alleviate some anxiety and set you and your student up for this exciting next step. 1. Set aside a time to talk about college—but then stick to that time. It’s easy for the college process to take over every family discussion. Agree with your student to set aside a time—Sunday dinner, on the ride to sports practice on Thursday, or Monday evening after homework—to discuss college and stick to just that time. Both you and your student will know that there’s time to talk through anything college related, but it won’t take over your lives. 2. Help your student be reflective. By asking questions about what subject(s) your student is passionate about, where they are feeling challenged, and where they feel like they may need more support, you are planting seeds of consideration that you will be able to help them cultivate into an academic path for the remainder of their high school career and beyond. You can also help your student reflect on what type of environment and experiences have helped them be successful in the past—do they thrive in a large group or in a more intimate group? Do they love to have lots of opportunities to select from or find a more defined path to be reassuring? 3. Map interests to colleges. Begin to help your student formulate a list of potential colleges by considering how their interests may map to majors and career outcomes, as well as the size of the school, environment (urban, pastoral, etc.), tuition and financial aid, and admissions criteria. 4. Talk about money transparently and early. Having transparent conversations early on in the college search process about how your family plans to finance your student’s college education helps set the process up for success. Whether you plan for merit scholarships, family savings, your student’s summer earnings, or loans, clarifying this early will ensure that you and your student are on the same page and focusing the college search on colleges that can be a financial fit. 5. Visit—virtually or in person—and ask questions. Create a standard list of questions that you and your student want to ask at each college. Once you’ve completed your visits, you can compare and contrast all of the pros and cons of each school. I hope that these tips are helpful, and I wish you and your student the best as you go through this process. Sincerely, ELIZABETH CHERON AVP & Dean of Admissions The Office of Undergraduate Admissions Northeastern University
