WHAT ARE THE CRITERIA?

Every student’s financial situation is different. To determine your eligibility for different funding options, Northeastern considers the following factors:

Family Details

Your living situation, sibling enrollment status, and other details are considered for certain types of need-based aid.

Financial Circumstances

Your family’s income, assets (investments and savings, including home equity), and other details are considered as part of this process.

Citizenship

U.S. citizens and eligible non-citizens may have access to federally-funded, need-based grants and loans. Although not eligible for federal student aid, international students also have options available.

Enrollment Program

Students can join the Northeastern community through several campuses and programs, each with their own cost and financing options.

Understanding YOUR AID

There are several ways to fund your Northeastern education based on your eligibility, including:

Merit and Other Scholarship Programs

All students are considered for competitive scholarships based on their exceptional achievements. No separate application is needed.

Grants

Federal, state, and institutional sources can provide grants—a form of gift aid that does not need to be repaid—to students based on their financial need.

Work Study

Students can earn money toward their education through federally-funded, part-time employment through the university.

Loans

Many student loan options, including Federal Direct and private financing, are available to students and families. Learn more at studentfinance.northeastern.edu/ types-of-aid.

Northeastern PROMISE

At Northeastern, we believe financing your education is a partnership that continues throughout your enrollment, not just your first year—that’s the Northeastern Promise.

Demonstrated Financial Need

We’re dedicated to meeting the full demonstrated need for each admitted student eligible for federal financial aid.

Awarded Aid

Northeastern University scholarship and grant funds will not be reduced during your undergraduate program (for up to eight in-class semesters).

Need-Based Grants

Northeastern University’s need-based grant funds will increase annually at the same percentage rate as the increase in tuition.

Financial Hardship

If your family experiences a substantial adverse change in financial circumstances, we’ll reevaluate your aid package and make available all financial resources for which you qualify.

Learn more at studentfinance.northeastern. edu/the-northeastern-promise.

No Loans for Pell Recipients

Making Strides

The average debt of students graduating from Northeastern has dropped 47% since 2013.

In addition to the Promise, we offer expanded financial support for eligible Federal Pell Grant recipients. We meet their full demonstrated need without Federal Direct Loans through grants, scholarships, and work-study opportunities.

More Ways to RUN WITH THE PACK

Northeastern is committed to helping you make your higher education goals a reality. In addition to merit scholarships, need-based grants, federal work study, and loans, we encourage you to consider these additional factors in your financial plan.

Payment Plan

Northeastern offers an interest-free, semester-based, monthly payment plan. Families can enroll in this plan for a nominal fee and make equal installments to pay for direct-billed expenses.

No Tuition for Co-op

During co-op, students are only responsible for housing and food costs and don’t pay tuition unless they choose to enroll in courses during the experience.

Global Experience Funding

The university offers resources to offset the costs of travel and housing expenses for opportunities such as study abroad or global co-op.

Student Employment

Paid on-campus employment in university facilities or through approved employer partnerships can be a great option, particularly for international students. Learn more at international. northeastern.edu/ogs/employment.
