A Century and wicket haul A century by Phillip Rattray and a nine-wicket haul by Kevin Rattray highlighted play in the last round of matches in the Scottsdale Cricket Association. Winnaleah, mainly due to the fine effort of Rattray who scored 133 n.o., were able to defeat Branxholm after batting first had set Winnaleah a run chase of 247. Dale Walker was in fine form hitting up 74 runs. Kevin Rattray’s fine effort of 9/30 off 21 overs was to no avail as Pyengana could manage only 80 runs to trail St Marys by 28 at the end of play.

50 Years Ago – 21 December, 1973

Death of keen sportsman The death of Mr. Col Allanby at the Scottsdale Hospital, removed a keen sportsman from the North-East. Mr. Allanby was born at Nabowla, where he played cricket, football and tennis before leaving to work on Flinders Island and at Healesville, Victoria. He later returned to Nabowla and worked in the timber industry until 1951 when he purchased the school shop in Coplestone street from Mr. Chas. Guy. After selling the business some years ago Mr. Allenby worked at F & G and Richardson’s before retiring through ill health last year. He showed keen interest in football and cricket. He acted as a scorer for the Scottsdale Cricket Club when they played in the NTCA competition.

60 Years Ago – 20 December, 1963

World record attempt by Scottsdale athlete An attempt on the world quarter mile and 400-yard record will be made by brilliant Scottsdale professional runner Ian Probert, at the Devonport sports carnival. Ian who is recognised as one of Australia’s top quarter miler, will have to break the present record of 46.7 seconds set several years ago by Herb McKinley, of Jamaica. McKinley set the record at Bendigo with the aid of four pacemakers. Ian’s attempt on the world record time will be made either with pacemakers or in his head of the 440 yards. His father and trainer Mr. L. J. Probert, said he would like the effort to be made with pacemakers, but this would be done only if the conditions were good.

Happy 114th birthday for the North-Eastern Advertiser! HISTORY REMEMBERED FRIDAY, DECEMBER 17, 1909 marks a significant day in the history of the region of North-Eastern Tasmania, with the publication of Volume 1, Number 1 of the North Eastern Advertiser (printed at the time without the hyphen between the words North and Eastern). The paper was begun by a printer from the State of Victoria, Robert McColl, accompanied by Thomas Tindale, a journalist and compositor, who ran it for less than two years before selling to 34-year-old Alf Osborne. Alf Osborne proceeded to modernise the paper, adding new technology and techniques. The paper employed a number of locals – a December 1924 story marking the paper’s 15th birthday lists 18 men who had been employed there over its short early history. Alf Osborne owned and ran the paper for 38 years before selling to Bill Christie

in 1949, a man who had worked for the Sun and Argus newspapers in Melbourne for more than 20 years. Over the many years of its existence the Advertiser has had to change and adapt to the circumstances of the times. The image shown of Volume 58, number 5, dated January 1968, shows that in 1968 the Advertiser was part of Lion Press group and incorporated the Tamar Courier. It served not only Scottsdale, Ringarooma, Portland and Lilydale but also George Town and Beaconsfield. As a well-known TV series still reminds us ‘Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives’, and the NorthEastern Advertiser has been there over the past 114 years to record and reflect upon the passage of time and the events that have unfolded. It is an important and essential part of our identity, providing us with local news and views, and will, hopefully, be there for us for many years to come. While we are

Christmas wishes to our community I WOULD like to take this opportunity to wish our wonderful North-Eastern Advertiser community a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the ongoing success of our community newspaper. Since taking over as Owner and Editor in July, I have been truly humbled by the support and encouragement I have received and how welcome I have been made to feel in this wonderful region. The North-East has a bright and prosperous future and I look forward to sharing your stories into the future. From my family to yours, please be safe, look after those around you during this special time and we will see you all in 2024 when we return to the office on January 15. - Rachel Williams, Editor North-Eastern Advertiser

Dorset Christian Leaders Network Christmas Message

The Gift

KATHARINE HEPBURN is remembered as an actress. One of the lesser-known acts was her father’s gift to a family waiting to buy tickets to the circus. The father of the large family went to pay for the circus tickets and did not have enough money to cover the cost. Katharine’s father could see the disappointment in the children’s eyes. He reached into his pocket and gave the father of the family a $20 note. Enough money to cover the extra cost of the circus tickets. Katharine’s family went home that day without seeing the circus. Today we share the story of a gift that has lived on long after the event. The birth of Jesus is celebrated every year at Christmas. A time to remember the greatest gift ever received. Participating in the Christmas holiday season is the reason to stop and spend time with family and friends. Because Christmas is about the birth of God's Son – Jesus. It is about how he came to give us love, hope and joy. That message doesn't change from year to year. We see and hear bad and devastating news every day. The good news of Jesus is to give us hope.

Rail Trail reassessment in ‘24 DORSET COUNCIL continues to review the costs and benefits of the North-East Rail Trail extension, with a decision on its future now not expected until the New Year. Commissioner Andrew Wardlaw said he had hoped to look at the merits of the development before Christmas, but Acting General Manager Rohan Willis said officers were re-evaluating the business case through a contemporary lens. “We are a different place now as far

as business confidence and investment attraction is concerned to when it was initially considered 10 years ago,” Mr Willis said. A clearer view of costs and benefits would be provided to the Commissioner in February or March 2024. Pending approval of the review, permission would then be requested from the Infrastructure Minister for the removal of the rail infrastructure and tenders called for the construction. Mr Willis said the $1.47 million

allocated from Federal funding was for the project to be completed by the end of the 2025 calendar year. He said there had been an increased cost in construction material combined with extra costs as a result of planning approval conditions including stormwater requirements and car parking provisions at Lilydale Falls. “It is foreseeable that the costs will be in excess of that amount,” he said.

Police investigate Pipers River car flip POLICE ARE trying to determine the cause of a single vehicle crash on Bridport Road at Pipers River around 5.15pm on Monday. The driver of a grey Mitsubishi Triton travelling west near Snares Road failed to negotiate a righthand bend. The vehicle left the roadway, flipped a number of times before coming to rest in trees. Two of the three occupants were transported to Launceston General Hospital with non-lifethreatening injuries. Anyone with witness information or dash cam vision of the crash is asked to contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers. Police are also urging motorists to take care on the roads over the festive season and remind drivers to keep the fatal five in mind whilst driving – speeding, seatbelts, alcohol/drugs, distraction/ inattention, and fatigue.

Addressing a turbulent year for Dorset Council DORSET COMMISSIONER Andrew Wardlaw is prepared for the long haul should he be required to stay while Local Government elections are conducted in the municipality next year. Five months into the role after being appointed following the suspension of all Dorset councillors on August 2, Commissioner Wardlaw said he had settled in. He described the first six months of 2023 as “turbulent” with the Office of Local Government reviewing the council and Minister Nic Street subsequently establishing a Board of Inquiry to investigate allegations of “widespread statutory non-compliance and failings of good governance”. Despite the uncertainty, Commissioner Wardlaw said the council was in a good position.

“Staff have been resilient, and I think we have stabilised the community and we continue to meet Annual Plan goals and delivered a good Annual Report and I think the community can be satisfied they are getting the service they deserve and are warranted despite the activities that occurred over the last 12 months,” he said.

“Generally, the community I think are apprehensive about what the future will look like and would like to get back to an elected Council, but I think with what we were faced with, we have done a reasonable job over the last five months.” Commmissioner Wardlaw acknowledged he may be here until the depths of Winter

next year. “At this stage I imagine the Minister will get a report by February 28 from the Board of Inquiry and I guess until that is delivered and the Minister decides what to do, my tenure is up in the air,” he said. “I am resigned to the fact that I am here until Easter and I guess I will be otherwise informed when the report is delivered as to whether it is longer than that. “There could be a reinstatement. Without pre-empting, but if the report says ‘okay, you need to do X,Y and Z and there is no reason why the councillors can’t come back’ the Minister would need to make a decision which I would imagine would take two or three months (after February 28). “But if the Minister is of a mind to dismiss, he’d have to work out elections and that would take some time to tell the community and prepare the community and then have a six-week process for an election…we are talking four or five or six months (after February 28).” The latter appears the most likely, with the former Mayor Greg Howard and at least two other experienced councillors wanting to resign from the role regardless of any finding. When asked if he had seen any practices internally to justify the scathing language used by the Minister for Local Government, Commissioner Wardlaw said that management was sound with good leadership. “I have read the report which I can’t talk about but… from an organisational point of view I don’t see this organisation as dysfunctional in the way it is operating and providing services to the community.” Code of Conduct complaints had been made during recent years and two residents had been officially prohibited from council as relationships deteriorated – one, Lawrence Archer, has since been allowed to return but Karl Willrath remains banned. One matter that Commissioner Wardlaw is now in charge of deciding is a new

Unreasonable Customer Conduct Policy to deal with what council believes are disruptive customers. “It is a policy that a number of councils have been looking at and we will not be the first to adopt this. There is a need to have a policy in place,” he said. Commissioner Wardlaw said the biggest decision he had made was the planning approval of the major new tourism accommodation venture at Barnbougle. He will also likely have to make a decision about the council’s long-term membership of Northern Tasmanian Development Corporation, after accepting membership

on a trial basis. “I think personally that’s the right place the council should be and obviously it would be good if an elected body could make that decision but if it wasn’t then it would be something that… I would look at again at the time and what the benefit has been and what is in the best interest of the community.” He praised the capital works program as significant for a small council, highlighting the work done on Golconda Rd as an example of a major project delivered with significant council contribution.

• Commissioner Wardlaw with some of the Playground Design entries.

Winners have been announced for the Dorset Council Playground Design Competition ENTRANTS WERE asked to design their most awesome playground or playground element with winners judged on the creativity of their entry. “A fantastic array of entries were received with some choosing to draw, photograph and even build their entry with Lego,” Commissioner Wardlaw said. “There were some really creative elements included, the entrants had really put some thought into their designs.” Prize winners K-2: Winner Flynn White, R/Up Bentley Roney G3-6: Winner Hudson Goninon, R/Up Peyton Watkeys G7-12: Winner Samuel Chilcott

Premium camp fees introduced at Derby A NUMBER of new camping sites will be rolled out at Derby with a higher price per night, following the completion of the new public car park and amenities facility. Camping in the area has been unavailable in recent years due to restrictions imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent development works. A report to council from Finance Manager Allison Saunders to vary fees and charges, said that council considered the

site a premium location, with direct access to the mountain bike trails, pump track and new amenities. It will be charged out at $40 a night per site, beginning in mid-to-late January. The Blue Derby Foundation will collect the revenue to reinvest into the trail network. Camping fees will remain unchanged at Derby Park ($25) and Branxholm Caravan Park ($20).

Mural reveal LOT 40 unveiled its monumental mural last weekend in tribute to the area’s mountain biking legacy. Designed by Tom Cosic, the artwork features key people involved in the development of the world-renowned trails. “It was an honour and a privilege to have them all there, especially Glen, without whom this would not have been possible,” Lot 40 owner Kate Brown said. “Chris Cafe, chairman of the Blue Derby

Foundation, gave a speech about the concept, the artist, and most importantly the recognition this mural gives to the trail builders. “Mountain biking has come so far and the trail builders create the whole system and have been instrumental in the transformation of Derby. “Tim and I are absolutely thrilled to be part of this and to be able to provide a canvas for Tom to display this homage to the trail builders.”

• Millie Caffe, Tim Colbourne, Max Connor, Glen Jacobs and Rhys Atkinson at the launch of the mural featuring some of the world’s trailblazing mountain bike trail shapers.

“Foundation members routinely inspect these areas to ensure compliance with required fees and charges is achieved and unauthorised camping in the new public car park is prevented,” Ms Saunders said. Meanwhile, a Management Team Briefing Report presented at the meeting showed three Blue Derby Mountain Bike Trail projects as awaiting permits before they can begin. The Relics Trail Bridge and Rusty

Crusty Bridge and trail rebuild are all swill awaiting permits from Parks and Wildlife before they can start, eight weeks after permission was requested. The Hazy Days trail capping of stones project is also requiring a permit and would be progressed using manual drop-in of supplies after a helicopter drop proved too “complicated”. That project is set to finish within two weeks.

REGIONAL ROUNDUP Flinders Island BY MAYOR RACHEL SUMMERS Last weekend saw the start of Christmas on Flinders Island with Santa dropping in to check his naughty or nice list. The annual event held by local Lions provided the opportunity for Santa photos, plus a pre-Christmas gift. There were dolls, and race cars, tea sets and rockets. Not too sure about the remote-controlled spider that my son has been terrorising me with though! Also bringing on the Christmas cheer was the Anglican Church's Christmas Carols evening. It started with a sausage sizzle in the park to allow kids to burn off some energy before heading inside to sing everyone’s favourite Christmas carols and songs. Council recently submitted an application to the Public Open Space Fund to construct a multi-functional sports surface at the Lady Barron tennis court, complete with basketball hoops, to cater to both tennis and basketball players. To complement this, a new fence and a sheltered BBQ area for families and friends to gather were also

George Town BY MAYOR GREG KIESER COUNCIL HAS engaged a consultant to provide a Township Character Plan, including an implementation guide for the coastal townships, that includes items such as plantings, bollards, seating, signage, and landscaping. Community consultation sessions were held in early December 2023. Once implemented, the design will directly benefit the community as its Council intends to inject new vibrancy, security and amenities into the townships. This process has begun and we predict completion around February or March, 2024. If you could not attend the sessions but would still like to participate, please visit Council’s website to complete the survey. George Town also enjoyed a wonderful start to the Festive Season with our Christmas Parade and carnival on December 8.

proposed. We were pleased to be informed by Minister Nic Street that our application has been successful and the project will commence in the new year. Also in the good news realm, we've progressed to the next round of the Growing Regions Fund, aiming to secure additional funding for our veterinary facility. “The Furneaux Islands Ark” project aims to establish a comprehensive veterinary clinic and wildlife rehabilitation facility on Flinders Island. It represents a collaborative effort involving Flinders Council, State Government, Tas Parks and Wildlife, and our local Flinders Island Community. To strengthen our application and showcase the widespread community support for this initiative, we kindly request your assistance. We are seeking letters of support from our community members to demonstrate the project's importance and its positive impact on our island. The limited availability of housing options for new and existing residents, workers and first homeowners on Flinders Island presents challenges, and we believe We had 20 community organisations take part including the St Patrick’s College marching band, there were stalls, arts and music and a market and it all went very well until the heaven’s opened and we all nearly drowned! We have also enjoyed a great visit from Governor Barbara Baker and Professor Chalmers who toured our community, which was a gracious host to Her Excellency. We stopped at South George Town Primary School, the George Town Emergency Services and Fire Brigade, Port Dalrymple School and the Neighbourhood House and finished the day with a community presentation at the Memorial Hall. They were very impressed and committed to coming back to visit again next year. We are also gearing up for the Tamar Valley Folk Festival from January 19-21, which is a great event to promote visitation to our area. The weekend will involve concerts, singing, workshops, a poet breakfast, children’s circus and choir.

that collectively, we can find innovative solutions to address this shortage. With that in mind, we have decided to initiate a collaborative 'Community Brainstorming Project' focused on housing. Your insights and ideas are invaluable, and we encourage you to think creatively to help us explore new approaches to increase housing availability on the island. Council is currently advertising two expressions of interest. Lease of Airport Hangar Expressions of interest are sought regarding lease of an existing aircraft

Break O’Day BY MAYOR MICK TUCKER IT HAS been proving to be quite the festive season in Break O’Day this year. Students from St Marys and St Helens participated in designing Christmas signs again this year with some selected designs put up throughout the area. What a nice way for the kids of Break O’Day to spread some Christmas cheer. Our Christmas Carols at Portland Hall was a success (even with the rain) with 150 people attending to enjoy the talents of the One Voice Choir who did another fabulous job this year. Christmas events are popping up in townships all over the municipality, like the Christmas Parade on Christmas Eve, and the St Helens Volunteer Fire Brigade lolly run held after it. I have even heard that Santa has been seen in Break O’Day, showing up here and there so keep an eye on our Facebook page or the Break O’Day Christmas Festivities page for details to be sure you don’t miss anything.

hangar at the Flinders Island Airport, located at 351-355 Palana Road, Whitemark. Whitemark Tennis Courts Site Council seeks expressions of interest regarding the purchase and development of land at 7 Walker Street, Whitemark. The land is conveniently located within an ideal distance to the MPC and Whitemark facilities and lends itself to use and development associated with the need for housing to support the Community’s ageing population. It has been another wonderful year for Council, there have been opportunities to work with the community on a few projects. One stand-out project that saw us working directly with community was our Week in the Life of Council program which saw us win the Award for Excellence in small Councils at the Local Government Awards. Thank you to everyone who has taken their time and effort to contribute to share their ideas, comments, support and interactions to help shape Break O’Day together as a community. Just because the Christmas season will be over soon doesn’t mean the fun has to stop these holidays. It is that time of year we all gear up for summer and the influx of visitors that will soon start bustling around our usually quiet townships. The St Helens Summer Carnival on Georges Bay Esplanade opens from the December 24 to January 1 nightly with sideshow games, a selection of rides and a few other attractions. Riding, running and woodchopping will feature at the TasCarnivals St Helens meet on January 20.

Powering the Red Dirt success story Launceston and North East Railway

• Greg Stewart of the Launceston and North East Railway Men’s Shed with Diane Reid and Wacek Lipski of the Tasmanian Gas Pipeline. THE LAUNCESTON and North-East Railway has received $5000 towards electrifying its vegetation management program as part of the 2023 Tasmanian Gas Pipeline Community Grants Program. The grant will be used to convert vegetation management tools to electric and then support a four-month training project for members as well as the community. Greg Stewart of the LNER Men's Shed said the training and equipment would be ideal to ensure the organisation can keep vegetation under control, while also providing life skills to members as well as the community. “It is great to see the Tasmanian Gas

Pipeline support this initiative as the benefits it will provide to our organisation are significant,” Mr Stewart said. Wacek Lipski, CEO of the Tasmanian Gas Pipeline said it was great to be able to support NNER as part of the $30,000 grant program. “The Tasmanian Gas Pipeline is an important part of our energy infrastructure in Tasmania and we are delighted to help others who also have significant infrastructure to manage,” Mr Lipski said. Individual grants of up to $5,000 are available to support charitable and not-forprofit organisations in the region.

Firework frustration for police CAMPERS AT Bridport Caravan Park were shocked awake on Saturday night, with Police attending a report of multiple fireworks being set off near the foreshore. A spoksperson said Police spoke to a number of people in the area, however the person responsible was not able to be identified.

It is understood the offenders were removed from the site by the new managers of the park, who have only just started in the role. Police have reminded people of the need to have a fireworks permit. Anyone with further information should contact Bridport Police on 131444.

MORE THAN 800 free meals have been shared with the Dorset Community in the last 25 weeks thanks to the generosity of volunteers and donors who are making the Red Dirt Café a reality. Volunteers are providing an average of 35-40 meals each week eat in or take-away to help those in need. Founder Karen Rainbow said it was humbling to see the project’s success since it started in June. “We have a great team of volunteers prepping and cooking weekly and the wonderful community and service club donations keep us going,” Ms Rainbow said. “Businesses have been so generous, and I doubt there is one person in Dorset who hasn’t contributed in one way or another. “There are so many positives from such a project, and we want to say a huge thankyou to the community for making it possible.” The Red Dirt Café will be taking a summer break from its usual home at the Nugget Sellers Pavillion, and will instead be having BBQs on December

FARMERS IN the Pipers River region are being encouraged to seriously consider the value that irrigation can bring to their enterprises, with water sales now open for a $165 million Tamar Irrigation Scheme. Tasmanian Irrigation today released detail of a new-look Tamar Scheme, redesigned to reflect current demand in the region after the first round of water sales failed to meet the necessary threshold for a much larger scheme The updated scheme will deliver 13,500 ML of high-reliability irrigation water, supporting farmers in the Beaconsfield, Legana, Rowella, Hillwood, Pipers Brook and Pipers River area. Officer Andrew Kneebone said a strong result from water sales was essential for the project to proceed. “The one thing farmers can do to help make the Tamar Scheme a reality is commit to purchasing water,” Mr Kneebone said. “Developing a strong case for State and Commonwealth funding relies on strong irrigator support for the Scheme, shown by meeting the threshold for water sales.” Mr Kneebone said that Tasmanian Irrigation has chosen to hold the water entitlement price at $2,450/ML for summer water to encourage more sales. Sales will remain open until February 29, 2024.

Carols ring out across the region FAMILIES AND friends joined together to sing and celebrate at four different carols events held over the weekend. Hundreds of people took part in the community events which were staged in Lilydale, Springfield, Scottsdale and Bridport. Friends of St Paul’s held Springfield Carols at the Springfield Hall with the venue’s acoustics making the carols sound especially joyous. After a visit from Santa, the 80 guests enjoyed a country style supper. In Scottsdale, a children’s Nativity stole the show at the Dorset Christian Leaders Network event at Scottsdale Primary School. The sun shone at Bridport for Carols by the Sea with hundreds enjoying the event put on by the Lions Club of Bridport, with a special start to the night being a number of tunes played by the Tasmania Police Pipe Band, much to the joy of children dancing in front of the stage. Lilydale Community Events had 500 people through the gates to enjoy a lovely evening at the Bowls Club. Winners of the area’s Stuffed Santa competition were also revealed, with the Judges Choice won by Mel Julia and Amy Whiting with their Summer Pool Party Santas. The People’s Choice was won by Sharleene Chick with Mr and Mrs Claus in a sleigh. Ringarooma residents will come together on Saturday for Carols by Candlelight at Christ Church from 7pm.

Athletics awards on and off track KAYE WALKER has been awarded Life Membership of North East Little Athletics for her 20 years of service to the club. President Morgan Rice said Kaye went above and beyond that of an average parent over her two decades involved in the sport. Kaye first commenced in 1988 with daughters Kym in Under Six and Megan in Under Eight and was actively involved until Kym left in Under 15. She then recommenced when granddaughters Tara and Rhianna began their journey with under six and Tiny Tots respectively in 2012 until their final season in 22/23. In Kaye’s time at North East Little Athletics she was a member of the committee, attended State conferences and meets and has been a dynamic Official. “Kaye was a very deserving recipient who helped build confidence not only in the athletes but with other officials and newcomers to the sport,” Morgan said. A second award was presented at the club last week, with Kaye’s daughter, Kym Lette, receiving a Centre Service Award.

“Again, like her mother, Kym was a very deserving recipient with her 10 years of commitment to the club holding various positions as a committee member including President and Vice President. Her leadership around the club, whether it was on the committee for pre-season planning, to coordinate meets, liaise with the local school to ensure facilities for the club or her activeness to readily volunteer to assist officials at meets or outside activities, was truly inspiring,” Morgan said. “She was always there to make it run smoothly. Kym actively attended State conferences and meets with her final season in 22/23 when her oldest daughter completed Under 14. We look forward to the day when she returns hopefully with her granddaughters.” On the track, Clover Viney set a new record in the U9 400m event with a time of 1:24.4. “This is nothing new for the Viney girls, who are constantly achieving great things at North East Little Athletic Centre and it’s not hard to know why, when their mother Hollie • Kaye Walker was presented with Life Membership of the centre while Kym and Aunty Taree were both previous athletes Lette received a Centre Service Award. and record holders themselves.”

A little luck on Rattray’s wish-list

T CONTINUED FROM BACK PAGE. “They are the sort of races you set your horses for all year. The Cup will be run over 2365m with the support races set for 1955m each. Fields are set to be released on January 3. “Kyle Pratten will probably run one of his horses but I would be surprised if Kate McLeod runs one because she normally runs her horses in mobiles and Rohan Hadley has a really, really nice horse that has never started from a stand, so I’d be surprised if he enters,” Rattray said.

While Ratray may be a local, he said there was no such thing as a home ground advantage in Scottsdale. “You just need your horses to step and behave themselves and if they do that, you are in with a good show,” he said. “Luck does play a big part at Scottsdale. It is difficult to win if you are not up in the front two or three because it is a smaller track distance wise and there are no long straights to make long runs. “That’s why when you are running your business, you only want to run here once a

year. “But we have always said we want to keep racing here once a year to demonstrate to the locals that there is an industry. “We occasionally see a horse jogging around Scottsdale track and some think they are an inconvenience, but they are not. “We have earned a lot of money over the years with our horses and I know our numbers are dwindling and there is not as many people in it but there is still good money being earnt by our local horses. “It is a once a year opportunity to show

everyone what we do all year.” Rattray said it was a good afternoon and evening of fun and encouraged anyone who hasn’t been before to make an effort to attend. “Twenty odd years ago when we raced on a Saturday afternoon once a year we would only get 500 people here and when we moved it to a Friday night it was like the atmosphere of the Scottsdale Show where everyone comes along, has a beer and a catch up with mates and it is a great social night for the community.”

Scottsdale Bowls BY JAN FOSTER THIS IS the last bowls report for the first half of our 23/24 season. On Thursday, December 14, Scottsdale club hosted both teams, with Cressy and Cosgrove Park travelling to us. All teams struggled in the awful windy conditions, many a hat was blown off heads but Scottsdale handled the winds better than the other teams and had a very successful day on the green with five wins and one draw. In division two, skip Graeme Walsh, lead Brian Walsh, 3rd Cindy Walsh and 3rd Gary Ashby had a good win, 21 to 15. Mike Hansell’s team with lead Nerina Hansell, 2nd Steve McMullan, 3rd Neville Lynch had a fantastic 24 shot win on their rink, 34 to 8. John Dennis’s team with lead Kevin Coates, 2nd Arch Ranson, 3rd Barney Wise also had a fantastic 25 shot win, 30 to 5. This gave Scottsdale a total of 85 to 28 total to win by 57. Division four won two of their three games with the other rink having a hardfought draw. Kylie Blackwell skipped with lead Danny Donaldson, 2nd Jeremy Carins, 3rd Chris Coates drawing 18-18.

Skipper Kath Ginn, lead, Marie Charlton, 2nd Phil Hay and 3rd Jan Foster came home 10 shot winners, 23 to 13. The two Tonys were winners with skip Tony Williams, lead David Ezzy, 2nd Kerrie Donaldson, 3rd Tony Giunta winning by 15, 25 to 10, giving Scottsdale a total win on the day of 66 to 41. On Saturday, December 16, Division One hosted North Launceston at home and Dicision three travelled to Beauty Point. Div. 1 team 1, skipped by Craig Bennett, lead Nerina Hansell, Helen Pola, 2nd, 3rd Gary Ashby went down 22 to 24. Nigel Chorley team 2 skipped with lead Steve McMullan, 2nd Peter Fogarty 3rd Neville Lynch having a resounding win 36 to 10. Team 3 skipper Mike Hansell, lead Arch Ranson, 2nd John Dennis, 3rd Rodney Murray lost 23 to 28 but fought well, going down 5 shots. Teams fighting once again with the winds. Division three almost got there but went down by one shot overall. Skip Graeme Walsh, lead Brian Walsh, 2nd Kath Ginn and 3rd Cindy Walsh won 21 to 20. Team two skipped by Sam Knight, lead

Kevin Coates, 2nd Pat Bennett and 3rd Kerry Hayes went down 17 to 19, losing by two. Team 3 with Skip Barney Wise, lead Tony Giunta, 2nd Jan Foster, 3rd Tony Williams had a draw 22 to 22 giving the overall team results of 60 to 61. A close encounter but once again the home team battled the winds better than the travellers. I would like to wish all readers and players a very happy Christmas, stay safe, enjoy family and friends and we will see you on January 18 for a restart.

In the swim of it

Footy Flashbacks BY MICHAEL FINLAYSON ANOTHER FOOTBALL season has come and gone with Scottsdale and Bridport back in training pre-Christmas in readiness for 2024. During the season it was very enjoyable watching the u/12s on Sundays and they have a couple of stars emerging in Harry Gerke and Tom Moore. Carter Hill showed much improvement as the year progressed also. It was great to see the u/16s win the grand final although they did keep us on the edge of our seats for a while. Daniel Wiggins played a very good game in a great team effort and it was magnificent to see the support they had in the grandstand on the day. I started watching Scottsdale seniors play in 1976. People younger than me wouldn’t remember Jeb Roberts or Robbie Grainger who could kick drop kicks even on a wet day. Jim Leitch, Billy Millwood, and Sonny Gillies were at the end of their careers and destined to finish them in the N.E.F.U. The strength of Peter Roozendaal in the ruck at u/19 level was something you had to see to believe as was the ability of Mark Coniston. Ron Hall came back and coached the seniors in 1978 and was still a magnificent player at age 34. There was nothing better than watching the Magpies come from behind and win in the last quarter kicking to the grandstand end with a big crowd in the clubrooms pocket. So, keep up the good work boys and keep training, listen to your coach and good luck for season 2024.

• Instructors Jane Kilburn and Lauren Smylie with Matilda Butler, Frankie Glasson, Millie Faulkner and Oscar Bignell. SCOTTSDALE AQUATIC Centre’s first six week block of swimming lessons are wrapping up with instructors Jane Kilburn and Lauren Smylie reportedly having fantastic fun seeing participant progress. “Congratulations to all the kids who have participated. We both look forward to helping more kids improve their water safety skills in the new year,” Ms Kilburn said. In January, they will be joined by Tiarna Button who is returning to the area for the summer to work at the new swim school, which starts up for an intensive school holiday program on

January 8. Any enquiries please email jane. kilburn@scottsdaleaquaticcentre.com. au or log your interest by completing a pre-enrolment questionnaire found on the council’s website. “The staff at the Scottsdale Aquatic Centre would like to extend a swimmingly festive greeting to the community, we love seeing everyone enjoy this fantastic facility and look forward to welcoming you over the holiday period,” Ms Kilburn said. Entry remains free all Summer but the pool will be closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day.

• Sergio D'Aloia is all smiles after completing his swim program.

Magpies join in festive fun BY PETER FISH MORE THAN 100 people, young and old, joined together last Friday night at the Scottsdale Football Club to celebrate the final training session for the year, and the fast approaching festive season. Young junior players trained beside senior men and women, sharing the footballs and the experience of working together. Having everyone on the ground at the same time was the idea of new club coach Joel Hayes, and it was certainly a successful event. Even Santa Claus joined in and demonstrated that his left foot was still in working order. Alex Stevens and Bryton

Mullins manned the barbecue having made the decision that cooking was less demanding than training while departing coach Ethan Petterwood announced he would be moving to work and play football in Queensland next season. Corey Binns celebrated his return to the board of directors by winning the raffle, and the face painter had a longer queue than the Cottage Bakery at lunch time. President David Mullins welcomed everyone to the club, and announced that Keiren Mullins would take on the role of reserves coach for 2024. All senior club coaches were in attendance. Training will resume on January 18.

SPORT A little luck on Rattray’s wish-list

• Adara Hall with former Scottsdale Cup winner and 2024 hopeful Rockandahardplace ahead of the Twilight Trots on January 5. LIETINNA TRAINER Kent Rattray is preparing for the annual North East Pacing Club Twilight Trots early in the New Year, with possibly three horses in with a chance to take to the track during the meet. Rockandahardplace will be an each-way chance in the main event, the $14,000 Scottsdale Cup, when the Scottsdale Recreation Ground hosts the race meet on Friday, January 5. “He would be a red-hot chance if he was

off the front row but because he is a past winner he will be off 10m which will make life hard on the smaller Scottsdale track,” Rattray said. “But standing starts are his speciality. Rockandahardplace won in Burnie last January at the Northwest Light Harness Cup which is a standing start.” Rockandahardplace is owned by Shane Hawes of Lilydale but leased by Rattray’s son, Wade.

His stablemate Colby Sanz, who is owned by Nathan and Sandra Bennett from Ringarooma, is also a possibility for the Scottsdale Cup. “Colby is last year’s Burnie Cup winner and he will go in it, provided I get him qualified in the next week or two and I might run filly Scarlett Place in a supporting race.” The North East Pacing Club utilises a standing start for each race rather than

a mobile start because of the size of the track, which only gets used for competition once a year. Harness enthusiasts from across the State are expected to enter, said Rattray, who is also Vice President of the North East Pacing Club. “They will come from mostly across the north but there will probably be a few southerners who come up,” Rattray said.
