North Coast Repertory Theatre Dancing Lessons – By Mark St. Germain September 8 – October 3 Entertaining and charming! Two highly offbeat characters, a Broadway dancer, and a science professor coping with physical and emotional challenges forge an unexpected friendship in this heartfelt play. Filled with laughs and the intricacies of the human condition, we witness their journey of discovery and personal triumph as they come to realize that sometimes the most profound experiences can occur when least expected. Wiesenthal September 27-28 Directed by Jenny Sullivan and from Off-Broadway, North Coast Rep presents Wiesental, a new play by Tom Dugan. His 90-minute play is heartfelt, and deeply as he makes history come alive. Simon Wiesenthal was a Jewish Austrian Holocaust survivor who became a Nazi hunter after the war. He spent

his life tracking down and gathering information on fugitive Nazi war criminals so they could be brought to trial. Ben Butler – By Richard Strand October 20- November 14 Ben Butler is part comedy, part history and inspired by real-life figures. General Benjamin Butler is faced with an impossible moral dilemma: follow the letter of the law or make a game-changing move that could alter the course of U.S. history. It’s a battle of wit and wordplay as the characters spar with each other on respect, equality, and civil rights. The Male Intellect – An Oxymoron – By Robert Dubac October 25 Men and women from eighteen to eighty are sure to laugh non-stop as Robert Dubac embarks on a quest to answer the age old question, “What do women want?” With a shrug of his shoulders or a crook of his neck, he seamlessly transforms

himself into five hysterical boneheads who offer sidesplitting advice on how to best straddle the gender gap—all while drinking a beer. Hailed by critics and audiences alike: “A clever combination of theater and stand-up comedy that is laugh-outloud funny, provocative, and insightful all at once. There are two types of people who should rush and see it—men and women!”—The Providence Journal Desperate Measures January 12 – February 6 This witty, wild musical comedy takes Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure and shakes it up. It’s a rollicking romantic musical that manages to address law and order, justice, and hypocrisy set in the Wild West. Fully loaded with laughs and toe-tappin’ music, saddle up and see why critics and audiences have branded Desperate Measures a grade ‘A’ musical! Purchase tickets now before it pulls up stakes and leaves town. North Coast Rep is located at 987 Lomas Santa Fe, Solana Beach 92075. For more information and tickets, visit www.northcoastrep.org.

San Diego Repertory Theatre Mother Road October 7-31 The 20212022 season’s opening show is a sequel that extends beyond the original story of John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath. Audience members follow the journey of Martin Jodes, a Mexican-American man and the only surviving relative of Tom Joad, as he travels back to Oklahoma to

claim his inheritance and build a better life. This captivating production is written by well-known Latinx playwright Octavio Solis, and it is directed by Sam Woodhouse, who has Oklahoma roots in his family. She the People November 18-December 5 She the People is a bold sketch comedy show that explores what it’s really like to be a woman in the world.

Women from the world-renowned theatre troupe, The Second City, break apart misrepresentations about gender in pop culture, politics, and more. Directed by Carly Heffernan, the show has been met with favorable reviews in the East and Midwest, including Chicago, Toronto, and Washington, D.C. Día de los Muertos Events Día de los Muertos is a three-day celebration from Mexican culture that commemorates deceased loved ones with prayers and remembrances. It is also known as Day of the Dead, or All Hallows’ Eve, All Saints’ Day, and All Souls’ Day. The holiday takes place from October 31 to November 2 each year. It is believed that the dead are able to cross the barrier of the spirit world and reunite with living loved ones during this time. Those who celebrate visit cemeteries and construct ofrendas, or altars, that are often decorated with marigolds, toys, pan de muerto (bread of dead), calaveras (sugar skulls), and photos of the deceased to awaken their soul and attract them to the offerings. Since it originally began in Mexico nearly 3,000 years ago, this spiritual holiday is being observed more frequently in the United States. There’s plenty of room to spread out, hide away on the lawn outside, or find a cozy spot for chatting. My Yard Live is an on-site brewery with a wide selection of craft brews. The service is friendly, fast and professional. We always receive our drinks and food quickly and are always impressed. Sitting on the sofa, we listened to the band play some great R&B and classic rock while we sipped our drinks and ate some excellent food. Try the new Atomic Shrimp Cocktail, OG Fried Chicken Sandwich, Smoked Crispy Brussels, Ahi Tuna Poke, Fish & Chips, Smoked Chicken Gouda Mac, Beer-BQ Bacon Burger, The Club Sandwich, and the White Chicken

It’s big, fresh, and very tasty! Tony’s Jacal has a beautiful floral outdoor garden patio, and expanded patio seating. Their full bar offers a wide selection of tequila and Margaritas, and serves a variety of mezcal. Happy Hour is Monday through Friday from 5-7pm. with umbrellas and fire pits and is the perfect place to hang out with family and friends. Pollos Maria is open every day for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They are open at 8am Saturday and Sunday. Breakfast is served all day and they offer Daily Specials at both locations. Their daily menu includes Maria’s House Specialties, featuring a whole broiled chicken for $15.99, or half chicken for only $7.99. Their Combo Plates, such as Chile Rellano, Enchilladas, and Tacos, are fantastic. The chicken tacos (soft or hard shell) are as good as, if not better than, any chicken tacos in all of San Diego. Try local favorites Enchilada Maria or their #6 Pollos Maria Grande! You can order burritos, tacos, tostadas, or their famous chicken soup, salads, tortas, chips and salsa, quesadillas, nachos, and a selection of wonderful desserts. Come early for a breakfast burrito, menudo (served Saturday and Sunday), or their huevos rancheros or chorizo, eggs and cheese plates. They stock domestic and imported beers and wine, and catering is available.

We love Pollos Maria! They have two locations. Carlsbad: 3055 Harding Street in Carlsbad Village (760) 729-4858. Oceanside: 125 Old Grove Road #8, Oceanside (760) 435-9071 or visit www.pollosmaria.com.

Tony’s Jacal This is one of the most popular places during Del Mar Horse Racing season. With a greatly expanded outdoor covered patio seating, Tony’s Jacal is following all CDC health and safety protocols and offers pick-up and delivery options, and now has two phone numbers to call. Tony’s Jacal is one of the most famous and historic Mexican restaurants and cantinas in San Diego. Located in Solana Beach, Tony’s Jacal is a historic San Diego landmark, which opened its doors in 1946 as a small neighborhood house where neighbors would stop by for a delicious meal. If you’re one of the lucky ones who grew up anywhere in San Diego North County, you know how great Tony’s is and probably are a frequent guest. According to Zagat, “Tony’s Jacal is one of the most authentic north of the border Mexican restaurants.” Taste the flavors of old Mexico and enjoy the history of one of the first Mexican restaurants in San Diego. Tony’s Jacal (pronounced hakal) is one of San Diego’s oldest and most treasured Mexican restaurants. Its reputation increased over the years because their cuisine is absolutely delicious,

Pollos Maria Pollos Maria is following all health safety guidelines with face coverings, table distancing and outdoor dining. Call ahead for pickup and to-go orders. Pollos Maria started in the kitchen of their home on Harding Street and was converted to the restaurant where it stands today in Carlsbad Village. The secret to their success is that they have arguably the best tasting fire-grilled chicken in North County and throughout San Diego. The service is excellent and efficient; the menu is extensive, and the prices are very reasonable. If you are looking for great tasting Mexican food and award-winning salsas (made fresh daily), we just cannot say enough good things about this restaurant. Their Oceanside restaurant location interior is spacious, beautifully decorated and perfect for any occasion including holiday parties. Nine Time Grammy Nominee, Dave Koz (Interview) By Andy Lee World-renowned jazz saxophonist, Dave Koz has released a fresh new album called The Golden Hour, and is on tour with two concerts scheduled nearby at Humphreys on September 3, and at Thornton Winery on September 12. It was a pleasure to catch up with Dave and talk a bit, mostly about his new album. Here’s an excerpt from our conversation. A: Where do you call home these days? D: I kind of split my time between Los Angeles and a little hideaway house I have in a place called Sausalito, just across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco. It’s a very tiny magical place. It was magic for me especially during the pandemic. It’s a very creative place where I do a lot of writing, and I was there working on my latest album. A: Regarding your new album what do you hope people will take away from it? Does it take you in any new or different directions from past projects? D: Well, The Golden Hour is the name of the album. It’s a collaborative album with Minnesota funk guitarist Cory

Wong. Cory is a talented young guy with a young audience. I’ve collaborated with many artists in my genre and I continue to do that, but it doesn’t necessarily move the needle bringing new people to the party as much as collaborating with someone who has a completely different audience from mine. I brought Cory into my world, and my audience has embraced him. My idea was to have his younger audience embrace this 60-year-old saxophone player. The idea is to create a subset of new fans to enjoy this music partially made up of my fans, partially made up of his fans. It’s an interesting experiment and I think it’s working. But the album just came out and we really don’t know all the answers yet. It’s been so much fun to tap into that energy…that really new energy. It’s been a shot in the arm for me creatively. A: Who were the new musicians on the album? Did you work with anyone for the first time? D: Yes, this is the first time I tapped into the universe of Cory Wong. Cory is a funk guitarist and that’s what he really does mostly. He’s got a lot of tools in his tool chest and he’s really an incredible soloist, rhythm gui-

tarist, and songwriter. Basically I just showed up and it was just me from my camp, and everybody else was from his camp. Corey and I did most of the songwriting, but we had some other songwriters too, including the wonderful singer, Phoebe Katis did a song on the album. A: Do you have a favorite track on the album? D: I’d probably say the title track of the album, The Golden Hour, is my favorite. It’s not easy for me to pick just one, but that one sums up the best of Cory and the best of me. The album has a 5-piece horn section, and the horns were arranged by Michael Nelson who did a lot of arranging for Prince for years and years. It’s a precision horn section that’s backing me up, and I grew up loving horn sections more than anything. Tower of Power is the first album I bought with my own money. They’re my favorite group of all-time. Earth wind and Fire, Blood Sweat and Tears, and Chicago are all in my DNA. To me The Golden Hour has a feel of a Tower of Power song. It connected with me on a very visceral, esoteric level.

Great Pumpkin Beer Festival–Tappin’ Gourd Times

October 30, Saturday, 3:25 – 10:25  We’re Giving Away Tickets! The legendary Seattle Great Pumpkin Beer Festival hits San Diego for an inaugural, mischievous day of pumpkin themed brews, live entertainment, twisted experientials, squash-based foodie creations, and hidden surprises! On Saturday, October 30, the streets of East Village will be transformed into a gourdgeous mecca of all things nonsensical as misfits unite to celebrate brews, boos, and beats. The rock star of the day will be the Pumpkin infused craft brews accompanied by farm house flavors, fresh hops, wet hops, saisons and more to give your palette an autumnal explosion of over 40+ seasonal concoctions. Pockets of taps will be scattered through the venue with coveted brews popping up in unexpected corners like the Ale Apothecary, Headless Horsemen Hideaway, and

Jack-O’s Tavern. This is one party you don’t want to be late for! The fest kicks off with the ultimate keg tapping as rivers of beer flow straight into your commemorative cup from the over 1,000 pound giant pumpkin keg. In this world undefined by logic, SteamPunkin presides as a meld of steampunk, punk rock and all things pumpkin. started as a one-day event, called San Diego’s Golden State Comic-Minicon, and was first held at the U.S. Grant Hotel. It has become very difficult to secure tickets to ComicCon. With attendance topping 130,000 in recent years, the event has grown to include satellite locations, such as local hotels and outdoor parks, and literally spills over and throughout downtown and the harbor boardwalk area. Along with panels, hosted by actors, designers, and celebrities; seminars and workshops with comic book professionals, there are previews of upcoming feature films, a costume contest, and the Comic-Con International Independent Film Festival. Traditional events include an eclectic film program, screening rooms devoted to Japanese anime, gaming, and programs with speakers and slide shows. Comic-Con also features floor space for movie studios and TV networks, comic book dealers, and collectibles merchants. San Diego Convention Center is located at 111 W. Harbor Drive, San Diego. For more information, visit www.comic-con.org.

Hansen – The Adventures of a Surfer, Skydiver, Team Roper, Entrepreneur Book written by Don Hansen with Chris Ahrens By Andy Lee Local surfing legend and owner of San Diego’s largest surfboard store, Don Hansen, tells his amazing story in his new book, Hansen. He eloquently reflects on what it was like back in the 60s and 70s, the good times and hard times, and how he approached and conquered the world of surfing, snow skiing, skydiving, roping, and retail. Hansen talks about his own trials and tribulations and the long bumpy ride to popularize the surfing culture, including his relationships with other world famous surfers and adventure sports legends back in the day and through the years. This exciting and well-written book is full of local Encinitas

anecdotes, adventures, and history, and tells the story of a man who worked hard, and ascended to the top of the action sports industry, and the sporting retail business world. Hansen talks about enjoying life to its fullest with a positive, calculating attitude, filled with common sense, a lot of luck, and knew his limits, except for all the broken ribs, fractured collar bones and busted legs. He is truly a legend in the surfing world, but also in many other action sports. Hansen is a man who has a strong family foundation, and business belief system, and is well known for going out of his way to help others. He donates to many charities, and according to testimonies throughout the book, has a reputation for treating everyone

around him with honesty and kindness. That really is the secret to his success. We all know that we aren’t remembered mostly for our accomplishments in life, rather, we are mostly remembered for how we treated and cared about others. Many of Hansen’s employees have been working there for a very long time and some for well over 40 years! Coincidentally, this year is Hansen Surfboards 60th anniversary. They are located on Hwy 101 in Encinitas. Stop in to pick up this book; and buy one for a friend as a gift. Remember to shop local this holiday season.

Looking for a New Career? CSUSM Offers Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language Certificate Scott Havenor was laid off from a 26-year career in the software business. Looking to start a new chapter, he learned about the Teaching English as a Second Language/Foreign Language (TESL/TEFL) certificate at CSUSM. Havenor completed the program and immediately saw the value of his new certificate. He connected with a school in Ukraine that teaches American English to local corporations so they can integrate into the globalized economy. The job application required a TESL/TEFL certificate and the interview included preparing a sample lesson, so Havenor selected a lesson he had created as part of the certificate program. He received a swift offer and six weeks after earning his TESL/TEFL certificate, Havenor was heading to Dnipro, Ukraine, for a four-month teachAMERICAN LANGUAGE & CULTURE INSTITUTE N O R T H

ing assignment. “I was thinking I was really retired,” he says. “This program has validated my professional life since being laid off and has given me a sense of contentment that I was missing. It was the bridge that has enabled this new life I am now going to have.” Designed for those with minimal or no English language teaching experience who are interested in teaching English abroad (EFL) or in the U.S. (ESL), this 120-hour certificate focuses on best practices in methods, materials and techniques used to teach English as a second/foreign language. The program provides professional development and employment guidance with a strong emphasis on handson training and practice with English-language learners in a university setting. Sessions are taught by master teachers with extensive experience in TESL/TEFL, teacher training, and curriculum development. Participants receive ample

opportunities for developing effective lesson plans and syllabi, practicing classroom management strategies, peer-teaching, and classroom facilitation. The 6-week summer course runs Monday through Friday on the CSUSM campus for a total of 20 hours per week, and the 15-week spring course is offered Tuesday and Thursday evenings for 8 hours per week. Save Hundreds or Thousands of Dollars By Having Dental Work Done In Tijuana By Andy Lee I have a very good dental plan, but it doesn’t cover gums, molar crowns, some root canals, bridges, etc. I recently cracked the porcelain of a 15-year old crown and it wasn’t covered under my dental insurance. I called a few San Diego dental offices and was quoted between $1,100–$1,500 for a porcelain over metal crown. I went online to look at dentist reviews, and found a dentist in Tijuana, Shirley Baker, D.D.S. She was advertising permanent porcelain crowns for $320. Her Englishspeaking receptionist convinced me that I should give it

a try. The next morning I drove to the border and parked my car on the U.S. side and walked across. It’s a bit of a walk and you should bring a friend. The dental office had a yellow taxi waiting for me (no charge). The driver spoke perfect English and in 5 minutes we arrived at the office. There was a coffee shop on the first floor lobby. I bought a latte. The elevator attendant opened the elevator door and used her card and pushed the 3rd floor button for me. I opened the door and the office looked just as nice as any dental office in the U.S. and better than most. I filled out a detailed dental history form. There was a woman sitting next to me and told me her husband was getting a root canal and that they have been coming here for six years. They too live in San Diego. Dr. Baker and

everyone there spoke perfect English and were very professional. After an X-ray the doctor and hygienist went to work. They gave me an iPod to listen to music. After removing the cracked crown she took another X-ray because she found a large cavity below the gum line under the old crown. She proceeded to remove the decay, filled the cavity, took an impression for a new crown, and gave me a temporary crown. I returned in 10 days for the permanent crown, and it looks more natural than my other two crowns. Total cost was $320 plus $50 for the filling. I saved over $1,000. A taxi drove me back to the border (no charge). I saved over $1,000 and the experience was great. Here is Dr. Shirley Baker’s number (619) 270-2165. Please let them know you read about this in the North County Sun.

Entertaining and charming! Two highly offbeat characters forge an unexpected friendship in this heartfelt play. Filled with laughs and the intricacies of the human condition, witness their journey of discovery and personal triumph as they come to realize that sometimes the most profound experiences can occur when least expected.

Part comedy. Part history. Inspired by real-life figures. General Benjamin Butler is faced with an impossible moral dilemma: follow the letter of the law or make a game-changing move that could alter the course of U.S. history. It’s a battle of wit and word play as the characters spar with each other over respect, equality, and civil rights.
