John Haedrich, turning 94 this January, and who still cuts meat and makes sausage in the butcher shop, has given back 100-fold to his commu nity, residents, places of worship, schools, marine families, and community organizations. Andy Lee, Publisher of the North County Sun, says, “John is one of those amazing people who crosses our paths once in a lifetime. I look up to him, and admire him and his achievements. He is a hard work ing, kind, and generous man with a big heart; and people who know him, love and respect him.” Tip Top Meats is located at 6118 Paseo Del Norte, Carlsbad 92011. Le Papagayo

Le Papagayo is always the place to be over the holiday season for great food, cold drinks, and live entertainment nightly. Le Papagayo is one of the few restaurants that actually expanded during the pandemic by opening its second location in Carlsbad Village. The new restaurant is spectacular and is always busy. It has plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, many new large flat screen TVs, a bustling long bar, great food, and nightly live music. Locals love all the new outdoor patio seating and always the wonderful award-winning cuisine. New Year’s Eve will be festive at both locations with special menus, drinks and live music by John Bennett at Leucadia, and the Jam Berries at Carlsbad! This locally family-owned restaurant has created a large, loyal, following unlike most other restaurants. We want everyone near and far to experience the flavors and sounds of this dining establishment on Historic California Coast Highway 101 in Leucadia, and on Carlsbad Village Drive, in Carlsbad Village, because Le Papagayo is truly awesome. You’ll love their unique fusion of Mediterranean and Latin American cuisine, along with their hang loose beachy vibe. Some of San Diego’s finest musicians play music at both locations.

From the outside of the 2-story hotel, the building doesn’t really catch ones eye, but as soon as you step into the cozy front lobby, you instantly feel that this place is quite quaint and special. The front desk service was very friendly and helpful, and walked us to our second floor room, where we could see the sandy beach and watch the waves rhythmi cally roll into the shore.

The room was perfect: new clean laminate floors, new paint, large comfortable king bed with multiple white down pillows, white sheets and blankets. Above the bed was a large painting of a wave appropriately crashing onto the shore. I actually was amazed at how detailed the designer and contractors were at making the already

sizable room appear even larger. The Bathroom was also completely upgraded with the newest-styles of walk-in shower, sink, cabinetry, lighting and ceiling fan. Later that night the beach air got a bit chilly but the room’s new smart-heating system kicked in fast to lull us into a very comfortable night’s sleep.

The Del Mar Beach Hotel is located at 1702 Coast Blvd, Del Mar 92014. Call (858) 400-8800 or visit www.delmarhotel.com.

Looking for a New Career? CSUSM Offers Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language Certificate

Scott Havenor was laid off from a 26-year career in the software business. Looking to start a new chapter, he learned about the Teaching English as a Second Language/Foreign Language (TESL/TEFL) certificate at CSUSM. Havenor completed the program and immediately saw the value of his new certificate. He connected with a school in Ukraine that teaches American English to local cor porations so they can integrate into the globalized economy. The job application required a TESL/TEFL certificate and the interview included preparing a sample lesson, so Havenor selected a lesson he had created as part of the certificate program. He received a swift offer and six weeks after earning his TESL/TEFL certificate, Havenor was heading to Dnipro,

Ukraine, for a four-month teaching assignment. “I was think ing I was really retired,” he says. “This program has validated my professional life since being laid off and has given me a sense of contentment that I was missing. It was the bridge that has enabled this new life I am now going to have.”

Designed for those with minimal or no English language teaching experience who are interested in teaching English abroad (EFL) or in the U.S. (ESL), this 120-hour certificate focuses on best practices in methods, materials and tech niques used to teach English as a second/foreign language.

The program provides professional development and employment guidance with a strong emphasis on handson training and practice with English-language learners in a university setting. Sessions are taught by master teachers

with extensive experience in TESL/TEFL, teacher training, and curriculum development. Participants receive ample opportunities for developing effective lesson plans and syllabi, practicing classroom management strategies, peerteaching, and classroom facilitation. The 6-week summer course runs Monday through Friday on the CSUSM campus for a total of 20 hours per week, and the 15-week spring course is offered Tuesday and Thursday evenings for 8 hours per week.

For more information on TESL/TEFL Certificate or other English or Cultural program services, visitwww.csusm.edu/ alci or contact us at alci@csusm.edu or (760) 750-3200.

San Diego Symphony Holiday at the Rady Shell at Jacobs Park

12/9-11, 12/17, 12/21

This year’s spectacular line up includes the return of the Symphony’s signature and adored Noel, Noel concerts, as well as performances of How the Grinch Stole Christmas: Movie in Concert and Love Actually: Movie in Concert.

The San Diego Symphony is thrilled to present three performances of its annual Noel, Noel concerts on the San Diego bay, following last year’s successful sold-out run at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park for the first time ever. The Symphony invites friends and families to Jacobs Park for three show-stopping performances, December 9-11, 2022 (December 9 & 10 begin at 7:30 PM and December 11 begins at 5:00 PM.) Conducted by Christopher Dragon, directed by Jonathan Gilmer, featuring the San Diego Symphony Orchestra, San Diego Master Chorale, and the San Diego Children’s Choir, audiences will experience an all-new story and script, full of cozy holiday moments, popular tunes, and jolly spirit. All are invited to come early for holiday activations throughout the park, including themed food and beverage delights. Tickets range from $20 to $95 and are on sale today at www.TheShell.org.

Holiday Movies in Concert are back for another year at The Rady Shell, conducted by Thiago Tiberio and with the San Diego Symphony Orchestra. On December 17, at 6:00 PM in a presentation of How The Grinch Stole Christmas: Movie in Concert, the San Diego Symphony Orchestra brings you on a wild ride back to Whoville where Cindy Lou Who takes matters into her own hands and turns the Grinch’s world upside down, inside out and funny side up in her search for the true meaning of Christmas. Later in the month, on December 21, at 7:00 PM the beloved holiday classic, Love Actually: Movie in Concert comes to The Rady Shell stage for a one-night-only performance. Spend the evening with your favorite holiday “rom-com” characters and get swept up in the magic of one of the most iconic Christmas Movie soundtracks of all time, as the San Diego Symphony Orchestra performs Craig Armstrong’s evocative score, with the film being projected onto the large screens at The Rady Shell. Tickets for both Movies in Concert range from $20 to $95 and are on sale today at www.TheShell.org.

Save Hundreds or Thousands of Dollars By Having Dental Work Done In Tijuana

I have a very good dental plan, but it doesn’t cover gums, molar crowns, some root canals, bridges, etc. I recently cracked the porcelain of a 15-year old crown and it wasn’t covered under my dental insurance. I called a few San Diego dental offices and was quoted between $1,100–$1,500 for a porcelain over metal crown.

I went online to look at dentist reviews, and found a dentist in Tijuana, Shirley Baker, D.D.S. She was advertis ing permanent porcelain crowns for $320. Her Englishspeaking receptionist convinced me that I should give it a try. The next morning I drove to the border and parked my car on the U.S. side and walked across. It’s a bit of a walk and you should bring a friend. The dental office had

a yellow taxi waiting for me (no charge). The driver spoke perfect English and in 5 minutes we arrived at the office. There was a coffee shop on the first floor lobby. I bought a latte. The elevator attendant opened the elevator door and used her card and pushed the 3rd floor button for me.

I opened the door and the office looked just as nice as any dental office in the U.S. and better than most.

I filled out a detailed dental history form. There was a woman sitting next to me and told me her husband was getting a root canal and that they have been coming here for six years. They too live in San Diego. Dr. Baker and everyone there spoke perfect English and were very professional. After an X-ray the doctor and hygienist

went to work. They gave me an iPod to listen to music. After removing the cracked crown she took another X-ray because she found a large cavity below the gum line under the old crown. She proceeded to remove the decay, filled the cavity, took an impression for a new crown, and gave me a temporary crown. I returned in 10 days for the permanent crown, and it looks more natural than my other two crowns. Total cost was $320 plus $50 for the filling. I saved over $1,000. A taxi drove me back to the border (no charge). I saved over $1,000 and the experience was great. Here is Dr. Shirley Baker’s number (619) 270-2165. Please let them know you read about this in the North County Sun.
