State of The Chapter I would first like to wish all our NCRS North Central Chapter members and their families a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. As we draw to the close of another year we can reflect on all the club events that we participated in such as 9-Technical Sessions, World of Wheels Display, 2-Judging Events, 1-Judging School and 4-Social Events. Also many of our members participated in Regional Events around the country and our National Convention in Las Vegas. Thanks to all the members that represented our North Central Chapter at these events.

Here’s a recap of the club events and activities during the past three months.

• Board Meetings: The board met on October 4, and November 1, meeting were held at Davanni’s in Arden Hills to conduct the club business, including board member reports, old and new business. The Board Elections were held with no new nominations, so the current Board Members agreed to stay another year. Club members attending included Dave and Jeanne Cloutier, Steve and Kenzie Hudak, Bob Cox, Jeff Henry and Wally Grivna in October and Jeff Henry in November.

• Technical Sessions: No technical session was held in October in lieu of Judging School on October 20. On November 17, Joe Galindo hosted the group at his shop to work on John and Sandy Ikeda’s 1963 Black/Black Split Window Coupe. No technical session was held in December due to the holidays.

• Social Activities: The Holiday Party is slated for Mancinis in West St. Paul on Feb.23, 2019. The Spring Opener will be at Cowboy Jacks in Woodbury on April 27. Additional social events will be planned through the year.

We continue to look for suggestions from our club members on how to improve our club events and increase membership participation.

Paragon Rewards Program – Wrapping up our Third Year

The North Central Chapter is wrapping up our third consecutive year in the Paragon Rewards Program.

In past years the rewards dollars were used as door prizes, raffle prizes, etc. at chapter events such as tech sessions, judging meets, and social functions. In the next few weeks we’ll find out our rewards dollars earned in 2018, and we’ll be sharing that news with you in a future monthly Chapter update or Newsletter.

The chapter currently has 35 members participating in the Rewards Program. We owe a great big thank you to these 35 members for purchasing Corvette parts from Paragon Corvette. THANK YOU!!

Membership Update The cold weather is here and we have our Corvettes tucked away for the winter, except those members who reside part-time in the southern states. You know who you are and we are envious.

Current Members

We have one new member this quarter bringing our year end total to 131.

Jim Kozlowski originally joined the chapter about 20 years ago when he purchased his 1965 Roadster. Life got busy and Jim stepped away for a while, but he now has more time to get back into the hobby.

This has been a common theme lately with several previous members rejoining the chapter.

Welcome back Jim. We look forward to seeing you again at our upcoming tech sessions.

I want to congratulate Madison Ogren who is the daughter of Mark and Charlene Ogren.

Madison was awarded the NCRS Gilbert Scrivner Memorial Scholarship of $3,500.

This scholarship is awarded through the NCRS Foundation which we have supported with our fund raising efforts.

Formed in 1974, the National Corvette Restorers Society is a non-profit hobby group of 15,800+ families dedicated to the restoration, preservation, history and enjoyment of Corvettes.

Founded in 1988 the North Central Chapter is chartered by the NCRS National to support and organize Corvette hobby activities in the Upper Midwest to further the NCRS National philosophy of preservation and restoration of Corvettes.

Did you know? c4 All 1986 convertibles were Indianapolis Pace Car replicas and came with a pace car decal package (to be installed at the buyer’s option), but none had special paint or options. The actual Indy Pace Car used at the 1986 race was yellow in color.

Chapter Happenings November Tech Session hosted by Joe Galindo and Nick Maras On November 17,th we had a tech session hosted by Joe Galindo and Nick Maras. As always, the tech session was well attended with over 25 members present. We worked on a beautiful Black/Black 1963 split window coupe owned by John and Sandy Ikeda. The is car was recently painted and the body is in better than factory condition. First, we looked at the restored frame and driveline and reviewed and discussed problem areas with these older chassis. John is having Joe install a new 383 GM crate with 435HP and 445 LBS FT of torque. Since the crate motor with significantly more power, John wanted to make sure the frame and drive line could handle the new engine without any issues. Joe installed a rebuilt factory 4:11 from a C2 big block car, C3 heavier duty half shafts, new trailing arms and disc brakes, built

by Bob Lund. Bob also supplied C3 front spindles. The big block drive train is designed to handle more power and torque and should work better with the new crate engine. Joe also added some more welds to help reinforce the frame to prevent any flexing. New brake lines and a new fuel line were also added.

Since the brake line goes through the frame on a C2, the only time it can be replaced is when the body is off the chassis. The back of the frame had a slight twist and Joe and Nick straightened and replaced the back-cross section to make sure the body would mount to the frame without any issues.

Since John planned on installing a new aftermarket 5 speed SST Tremec transmission with the new crate motor, we discussed options for aftermarket clutches to use. The newer clutches have more holding power and also require a lot less force to engage and disengage. Many of the older clutches are quite stiff and can tire out your leg muscles, especially when driving slowly! (Editor’s note: Driving slow in a Corvette is never recommended! Parades and school crossing zones are the two only exceptions! J/K).

Chapter Happenings Joe then discussed how to properly align the transmission to the new motor using a dial indicator and off set dowel pins. If the transmission isn’t properly aligned, the roller bearings can fail. Tremec requires the owner to send in proof they aligned the transmission with off-set dowel pins. If the pins aren’t used, the factory warranty from Tremac can be voided.

The last project we conducted was with the 383 crate motor.

Because of hood clearance issues, we needed to install a new lower GM intake on the car to insure proper hood clearance.

The new intake is about 1.25” lower than the intake that came with the crate engine. Joe and Nick went over how-to proper prep the block and all gasket surfaces before installing a new intake. Proper block prep in very crucial so you don’t have issue with any oil leaks. We reviewed the sequence on how to tighten the intake bolts and proper ways of using a torque wrench. Joe explained that the new crate engines can be used with intakes designed to use either a carburetors or fuel injection systems. One of the members asked the John, “Why didn’t you go with a LS engine instead of the 383?” John said he is building this car so he can drive it and enjoy it. He opted for the old school crate engine since the motor mounts could remain the same as the original small block and if the next owner wanted to change the car back to a factory drive line, they could do that.

During the tech session, we also looked at a C1 steering gear boxes. Joe said the standard gear boxes have a 20:1 steering ratio and can be difficult to turn, especially when driving slowly (Again…not recommended in a Corvette!)

Joe came up with an idea of switching out the worm gear from the original Corvette factory GM unit to a gear from a GM passenger car. The passenger car unit has 24:1 ratio and is a lot easier to turn. If this interests you, please contact Joe. We are always looking for Judges The NCRS North Central Chapter will hold two “Chapter Events” during 2019 and multiple “Judging Schools”. NCRS Judging is recognized around the world as THE STANDARD in determining originality.

The Judging System is designed to educate each owner about their car as well as providing recognition for excellence in the areas of restoration, performance, or preservation. You can learn to judge through participation. Start out as an observer judge and work your way to Master Judge through the Judges Recognition Program.

JUDGE NCRS Judges are volunteer members who offer their time and knowledge to Judge Members Cars under the guidance of the NCRS Technical Information Manual & Judging Guide.

Master Judge NCRS Master Judges are volunteer members who have been recognized by the organization and membership for accumulating a minimum of 100 points in our judging recognition program by Judging at events, attending Judging Schools at Chapter Meets, Regional Meets and National Meets. Many have also attended National or Regional Judging Seminars that last for one or two days of intensive instruction and hands on participation.

Chapter Judging School The chapter held a Judging School at Chris Enstrom’s home on October 20th. The group of 17 members watched a 90 minute DVD highlighting the details of the NCRS Judging process. For those of you that are unable to make the National Judging Retreat coming in early 2019, this DVD is a great recap of one of the classes offered at that Retreat. Afterwards had a discussion about certain parts of the judging process.

What Makes us NCRS

NCRS Members benefit from mountains of technical information that they can rely on. When you join the NCRS, you access the combined knowledge of thousands of previous members. A group of 19 Technical Advisors, who are recognized as the authorities in their fields, are also just a letter or e-mail away. Whatever problems that you might run into has been solved in past years by other NCRS members.

At the chapter level we are always looking for Tech Session ideas. This is NOT the chapter coming to work on your Corvette. It is the chapter coming to HELP YOU work on your Corvette as you learn more about your piece of American History. If you are currently working on your Vette and would be interested in hosting a tech session, please contact Tech Director Bob Lund or Asst. Tech Director Paul Burski.

Corvette: My 1964 Corvette is a Satin Silver convertible with Black interior. I have both the silver hardtop and black soft-top.

The engine is a 327 300hp, M20 4-speed transmission and 3:08 Positraction rear end. It has the AM-FM radio with power windows. When new the car came with a white top, steel wheels and the standard hubcaps. I run 1965 original knock-off as they add a nice touch to the car. I purchased these while living in Vermont in 1972 but they have never been run in the winter.

History of your Corvette(s): I have always liked Corvettes with my first Corvette experience being a 1956 owned by a friend while I was in high school. I remember sitting in my first new Corvette at Midway Chevrolet in Saint Paul in the fall of 1962. It was a Fawn Beige 1962 with the hardtop installed. Midway Chevrolet had a Red 1963 fastback in the corner window however that was cordoned off so you could only look but not touch. I had the bug. At that time I also started my Corvette dealer brochure collection and now have all the originals from 1963 to 2019.

I purchased the car in May of 1968 while I was a college student at Winona Sate College from the second owner who lived in Red Wing. The car was built in St. Louis, MO on January 6, 1964 and sold new from Ken Ray Chevrolet on West Broadway in North Minneapolis. From 1968 to 1974 I drove the car year round as my main mode of transportation, moving to Vermont in 1971 and returning to Minnesota in 1976. I must say that the Corvette is a great winter car however the Minnesota and New England winters took their toll on the car.

Between this and storing it over the years in less than desirable conditions it took its toll on the frame and the rest of the components. When I purchased the car it had over 68,000 miles on the car with a broken odometer. I am guessing with all the driving I did the car had to have had well over 100,000 miles on the car when it was taken apart in 2016. I had not driven the car since 1997. With the 3:08 axle the engine was if decent shape when we took it apart and now copper was showing on the bearings. After I finish this one I just plan to enjoy my old friend and not take on another project.

Repair / Updates / New top / Re-chrome parts‌ etc.

In November of 2016 the car was trailered up to Vanz Auto in Blaine to begin bringing the car back to a safe drivable condition. This included replacing the frame with another 1964 frame which was not rotted out. Upon dropping the car off at Vanz Auto, Van Mattson was able to get the car started after having it sit for 19 years. Since 2016 I have had the shifter, seat side rails and bumpers re-chromed. I replaced the original white top with a new black top in 1970 while I was still in Winona. As part of the restoration the engine, transmission and rear end have all been fully rebuilt. The brake system and fuel system have been replaced with stock replacement parts. The original master cylinder is being replaced with a duel master cylinder for safety purposes. The seats and arm rests have been reupholstered with Al Knock upholstery.

The carpeting will be replaced when the car is drivable. This car is going to be a driver and not a show car.

North Central Chapter: I joined the NCRS back in 2016 so I could use it as a resource for my car. I then met Jerome Lardy at Back to the 50’s and became a member of the North Central NCRS. With my current focus on getting my 64 back on the road I have only been to a few of the local Tech Sessions and activities however once my car is completed plan to get more involved. At that time I will likely start attending the Tech Sessions and Car Cruises as they come up and am looking forward to it. It has been a long time since I was behind the wheel of my 64.

November - Mike Schmoll Corvette: My wife’s name is Sue and we have been married for 48 years, both of us growing up in Bloomington but living in Eden Prairie since 1978. We have two grown daughters (Jenny and Shelley) who are married and 4 grandchildren Jack 13, Blake 10, Emma 6 and John 4. Growing up in the 60’s I have always been interested in muscle cars and specifically Corvette’s but at the time they were not affordable or practical?

I was the 65-66 TL for the event & I told you I felt your cylinder case seemed to me to be an original stamping [ a factory grind out]. I have shared these photos with other members of the corvette hobby, & our opinion was all the same! Hope these pictures & opinions will be helpful.

Look forward to seeing you again. Thanks, Bill Calorico I received a 92.6% score at our 2007 Regional missing a Top Flight by only 63 pts. even with a total deduct for Engine pad (38 pts). Adding the engine pad back in plus 45 of the 62 pts. missed that were corrected in Operations and other small corrections made afterward, I was satisfied I had a Top Flight Car with my 65’.

I had a lot of help from long time members of our Chapter for the first few years doing a body on restoration, it was an original car but a lot of the original parts were worn and the rubber needing to be replaced. My main mentor in the club was Ron Hendrickson who is gone now but he spent several hundred hours over and under my corvette helping with restoration along with educating me. Jim Fenske, Steve Johnston and others were also there to help!

I currently have 2 Corvette’s: a 1965 and a 2011. I purchased the 65’ in June, 2001 – 1965 Roadster, L79 327, 350 hp, 4 speed, 3.70 gear ratio. It is a unique car in that with a production # 23,485 it was produced on the last full production day in July for 1965 with 75 cars produced after my car and the last 2 cars for the production year produced the first day of August. Two other things unique to my car but typical to cars produced at the end of production cycles in the 60’s as Nolan Adams and others have also verified: Several parts on my 65’ are 66’ parts – grill, Glove box door (script, inside tire pressure sticker).

Engine Pad Factory “Grindout”, here are the comments after our Chapter 2007 Regional Judging Meet – It was great to meet you & a bunch of other NCRS people from Minnesota at the Regional.

2011 Grand Sport Convertible – I traded in a 1969 Corvette L79 Convertible in February, 2012 to purchase the Grand Sport that was an Indy Pace Car in 2011 with badging, used

by GM Exec’s the week of Indy. It had 380 miles on it from that week and was what I was looking for with 430 hp, paddle shift 6 speed auto, LT4 with every option but GPS. I have driven this car only when the top can be down so as of the end of the season this year it only shows 3,800 miles on the odometer!

I currently do not have any major projects for my corvette’s other than maintain them and keep them updated to originality and continue to get them out and enjoy them each summer!

I joined the NCRS National and North Central Chapter in 2001, I have participated in two NCRS Judging School’s in Dallas the first one in 2005 and the last one in 2016. I received my “Master Judging Hat” at our NCRS Regional in 2016 along with other club members which was a highlight! I have enjoyed all activities with our chapter over the years, Judging Sessions are always good to review specific areas judged but also to understand the judging process and how to judge I think is important. Tech sessions when they apply to interests I have I appreciate and also cruises in the summer as a way to get together more often I have enjoyed as well.

Member of the Month Hemmings for leads. Howard in Sioux Falls was on the same wave length as me as to what a “cherry” car looked like. A month or so later he called (January 1991) with a 18,000 mile, two tone, 4 spd, 1981. A trip to Sioux Falls was in order and it was “cherry”.

Many sleepless nights later It was mine and I won my class at Plastic Fantastic for the next three years with it. It’s been amazingly trouble free for 27 years now. I still visit Howard, who has been in Phoenix for years.

Corvette(s) that you have: 1981, 2014 History of your Corvette(s): My first Corvette was a triple white 1963 convertible….. I was a 7 year old kid in Detroit (1963). I gained proficiency at building AMT models and a few years later was experienced in paint and putty work.

I graduated to 1:1 scale around 1978 when I acquired a 1970 two top convertible and joined NCRS…part of college training in my book! It had been winter driven and was quite “scalely” under the surface. The windshield header leaked in rain and the hole under the glass was quite shocking when I replaced the windshield. I rebuilt the motor shortly before college graduation with stops in Tennessee, Indianapolis and to MN. I visited Doug Rippe when he was out on Hwy 55 and decided a paint job would add up to be more then buying a perfect Corvette to begin with.

The ’70 was sent down the road as the restoration costs were not in line with its value. A few years passed and I again was tired of reading about Corvettes, I wanted my hands on one! Traveling 7 states for work allowed me to visited a lot of dealers….Remember, this was before the internet and you relied on Auto Shoppers and

As I was winding down my career, I thought a “once in a lifetime” museum delivery of the new C7 was in order. During a 2013 Christmas visit with a long time Corvette/high school friend in Michigan. I mentioned we needed to order a pair of the new C7’s and take museum delivery together. He smiled and said his arrived yesterday! I took delivery in July of 2014. After trips to the Tonawanda factory in NY the next year and the Lemay Museum in WA the year after, the C7 lives in AZ where it gets exercised on Route 66 and many mountain passes. It recently turned 35,000 smiles. It sees many weekend car events as the desert fills up with Corvette “snowbirds” from the Midwest.

What is your next Corvette project?

The C3 will get it’s original U joints replaced next year with a bottle of Ibuprofen for me. The C7 just got it’s original tires replaced.

Waxing is an on going “project”.

North Central Chapter: I joined North Central 4 years ago. Jerome Lardy was walking the neighborhood and “sniffed” out the scent of an old Corvette in my garage. I’m more into Tech and Social activities. I met Chris Enstrom years before thru an old, now unplugged, local Corvette internet site and helped when the body came off and back on his ’67. I’d like to attend more events but I have a conflict with a motorcycle club breakfast I hold on the 3rd Saturday of the month at Starks….plus living in AZ for 6 months+ a year cuts into my snow shoveling. You’ve got a great club going, I’m happy to join in when I can.

Chapter Board Minutes

October 4, 2018

Board Members Present: Alden Miles, Jerome Lardy, Chris Enstrom, Paul Burski, Dave Murphy, Bob Lund, Don O’Grady Board Members Absent: Roger Carlson, Kevin Sullivan, Nick Kornder Members present: Dave and Jeanne Cloutier, Steve and Kenzie Hudak, Bob Cox, Jeff Henry and Wally Grivna.

Location: Davannis 3673 Lexington Ave. N Arden Hills ,Minnesota Approval of Minutes Meeting Minutes from the September 6, 2018 meeting were approved– Motion by Jerome Lardy, seconded by Don O’Grady.

Chairman’s Report Alden announced that this is the time for the club elections and asked any members present if they wanted to be on the ballot. Having heard none, and the fact that an email was sent to all members requesting nominations and none were forthcoming, the current Board Officers are standing for re-election. Since no one was nominated and the current board members agreed to stay another year there is no reason to send out ballots. This motion will be confirmed at our next meeting.

Secondly Alden reminded us of Mike Kittles passing and sent a thank you note around from Mike’s wife Phyllis thanking the club for the kind donation.

The Board would like more members involved in club activities and extends an invitation to all members to participate not only in judging and tech sessions, but in social activities also.

Vice Chairman’s Report A review of the costs of providing cling window film decals was completed and the results passed around for review. In addition the club received help from Jerome’s daughter in preparing a better layout for business cards. Both the purchase of cling vinyl and business cards will be on a future meetings agenda.

Treasurer’s Report.

Roger reported through Alden. A $500 check was sent to the NCRS Foundation from $380 moneys collected from members and an additional $120 added by the club.

In addition a $100 donation was sent to Mike Kittles’ wife in memorial.

The cost of envelopes and name tags was provided to Chris Enstrom.

Reminder: We have four Paragon gift certificates left to hand out.

Financially, we are fine.

Judging Report The NCRS Judging Retreat is proposed for March 14-17,2019 in Dallas,TX. Watch for details in the NCRS Driveline Sept-Oct Issue and the next Newsletter. This is a two day class, with two sessions offered. Price is $300 plus lodging and transportation Chris proposed Oct 20th to be a Judging school at his house starting at 1 PM. Chris will select an appropriate DVD from the National Judging Training archives he possesses. The Board accepted and a notice will be sent by Nick Kornder with Chris’s address. At a future date, Chris will share the St. Louis Assembly Plant presentation which was made by the former Plant Manager. Many would like to see.

Membership Report No new members Membership is at 130. In addition the Quarterly report was submitted to National.

Tech Report The September 22nd Tech Session at Andy Piazza’s was a success with 21 members attending to see his 1964 Daytona Blue convertible in which a Convertible Top Frame was installed. Bob mentioned that with all the attention to 1963 cars he offered and Chris accepted his proposal to show how to make a 1963 steering column safe by upgrading it. Bob will bring all the parts to the Oct 20th session at Chris’s house. There was also a discussion of technical articles in our newsletters and there was much participation.

Activities Report The Fall Color Run to Kiss’s Classic Car Show at the St. Croix Casino in Danbury WI on Sept 29 was a success with 16 members present. With weather always a consideration, Don asked the members and the Board if we should move up the Fall Color Run. The feeling was to leave it as a Fall Color activity in Sept/Oct. The Holiday party is slated for Mancinis on Feb 23rd . There was some discussion with the Board leaving the date and location unchanged at this time. The Spring Opener will be April 27 at Cowboy Jacks in Woodbury. A BBQ will be offered by Tim DeAtley – date to be announced. Alden asked the board to consider more thoughts on our social activies and review again next month.

Chairman’s Report The 2018 Board members will continue for 2019 and are unopposed therefore Alden requested a motion to approve the Board for 2019. Roger Carlson made the motion and Don O’Grady seconded. Motion carried.

Vice Chairman’s Report Paul researched expenses for window decals and sent Alden two bids. The first from Arcon Solutions for 4”x9” window clings for: Qty Each 100 $1.60 250 $1.13 500 $0.60 1000 $0.50 The second from True Blue Designs: Qty Each 200 $0.775 500 $0.63 In addition Paul shared a quote from Arcon Solutions for business cards: Qty Each 100 $0.28 250 $0.136 500 $0.084 Will discuss again in January.

Treasurer’s Report.

Roger reported details to the Board. Financially, we are fine. We have added a few more members to our Paragon list which helps us get Gift Certificates for the club to enjoy. Roger gave two Paragon certificates to Don for the Winter Dinner.

Judging Report 17 attendees were at the Judging School at Chris Enstrom’s house on Oct 20. Chris suggested that the next Judging School might be a Breakfast as we had done in the past. It was agreed that on January 19 we would host the presentation ,” St. Louis Assembly Plant.” A possible location would be the Golden Corral in Maplewood.

The Spring Judging will be at Gilby’s on May 11. Fall Judging at Long Lake in Aug. Reminder- National Judging Retreat in Dallas in March.

Think about a possible Judging School on paint. Possibly Friday night May 10 before the Spring Judging at Gilby’s.

Membership Report 130 members. Board agreed to hold the dues to $25 for 2019 and Jerome will proceed to notify members to renew. Jerome requested Roger to get the IRS Statement in January 2019 for him to send to National.

Tech Report Next Tech Session suggested by Bob will be Nov 17 at Joe Galindo’s. Board supports.

Activities Report Feb 23rd at Mancinis and April 27 at Cowboy Jack’s.

Don asked the board if they wanted to support some prizes for the Dinner at Mancinis’. Chris made a motion to allocate $200 and Roger seconded. Motion carried.

2019 Location for meetings were discussed. David Murphy made a motion and Roger Carlson seconded to have the January 3rd meeting at Davannis in Roseville. 1905 Perimeter Road.

Jeff Henry was asked his opinion on how the board was doing. Jeff said the Chapter meets many people’s needs. Asked if we had a monthly social gathering, would he think it would be attended. Jeff said it would be worth a try.

Alden mentioned that he and Paul had suggested they would visit the other Corvette Clubs to tell them about us and extend an offer to join.

Jeff asked if the various clubs ever got together and the answer was that we have had a couple joint events over the years.

Chris suggested that if the new Concours was being discussed at the upcoming Judging Retreat, we might have more to offer prospective members.

We thanked Jeff for attending and encouraged him to join us again.

Membership in the North Central Chapter of the NCRS is open to all members of the NCRS National organization. Dues payable to the North Central Chapter are $25.00 per years. The NCRS Judging Process The NCRS has compiled and is constantly updating highly detailed judging standards and rules for each basic model division from 1953 through 1999. The guidelines in these NCRS Technical Information Manuals are recognized throughout the hobby as THE STANDARD in determining originality.

The judging system is designed to educate each owner about their car as well as providing recognition for excellence in the areas of restoration, performance, or preservation. It is not a “cleanliness contest” like other events, nor do you compete against your friends’ Corvettes. Judging is not done by some secret group of “experts”.

You can learn to judge, or you can have your Corvette evaluated by other NCRS members. 10,516 members are currently recognized for their judging expertise. They have created 27,871 NCRS judging records through NCRS events internationally to date.

New Item Added NCRS has recently announced the addition of an Award Confirmation Document Service.

This service will provide a confirmation document with a complete listing from the NCRS database of the available award statistics for a specific Corvette. The presence of this confirmation document will assure the owner of the NCRS judging history on a Corvette.

North Central Chapter to Host 2020 REGIONAL Regional Judging Event – Rochester, Minnesota – June 11-13, 2020 As you have probably heard by now, the North Central Chapter is hosting one of the six Regional Judging Events in 2020. The event is set for Thursday-Saturday, June 11-13, 2020 in Rochester, Minnesota. If you are interested in seeing some great Corvettes, learning more about the NCRS Flight Judging system, and meeting people from around the country, we would love to have to come to Rochester! The event starts on Thursday with the event check in and Operations Judging. The cars then proceed inside the Graham Center Arena. The evening wraps up with a 1 point Judging School put on by the National Judging Chairman, David Brigham and a Welcome Reception. Friday will see a full day of Flight Judging and a 3 point Advanced Judging School.

Saturday will see the remainder of Flight Judging and a second 3 point Advanced Judging School. Saturday evening is the awards banquet and we’re done!

Here are the different ways you can participate at the Regional.

• Increase your judging knowledge by attending three different judging schools (receive a maximum of 7 judging points) • Participate as an Observer Judge and assess some really great Corvettes as they go through the judging process • Volunteer to be a tabulator • Volunteer for tasks that need doing to help the Regional be the best event it can be • Bring your car down and have it judged • Drive your car down and enjoy the event If you have any questions at all, please reach out to me. MAKING JUDGING SHEET REFERENCES BASED ON THE C-D-C-I-F As the NCRS judging system is based on 5 different descriptions for ORIGINALITY, with each having a value of 20%, it is most helpful to the owner, that we use the same descriptions for the comments on the sheets, when we judge their cars.

C = CONFIGURATION D = DATE C = COMPLETENESS i = INSTALLATION F = FINISH The use of words like “Service Replacement”, “Reproduction” or “Restoration” are very little to no help to the owner, since they do not describe WHAT the difference to original is.

Since we judge the APPEARANCE of ORIGINALITY, we do not care where the particular judged part comes from (Original GM, Restoration Parts House or Neighbors Shed).

Certain parts, which do not reflect any Originality based on the CDCIF (Full Deduction) are not listed on our Standard Deduction Sheet. Such parts may be described as: SiGNiFiCANtLY DiSSiMiLAR. A good example is the typical parts-house (AutoZone, O’Riley etc.) Cooling Fan Clutch.

Judging Example: One of the most often “non-original” parts encountered on the chassis are the shock absorbers. They are a single line item and have a value of 5 points. Based on the CDCIF we can make the following determination: Configuration: Check nuances on the shock absorber body (may be different print, “Made in Mexico” etc.)

Date: Check for presence of date. (Not necessary, if a non-typical configuration has been detected) Completeness: Are any factions missing??

Installation: Are the bolts, washers at their intended places and orientation (or reversed)??

Finish: Is the shock painted in a typical finish (lower bushings free of paint etc)??

Conclusion: A shock absorber with “Made In Mexico,” finished and installed in a typical manner would differ in the Configuration (1 Point) as well as the Date (1 point) since we know that a shock with such configuration was manufactured later than the car. Total deduction would be 2 points.

CORVETTE ZR1 PUSHED SO HARD ON THE TRACK IT TRIGGERED A CRASH SENSOR

Do you think you can push your car to the limit? Like really so much to the limit, so much so that the manufacturers emergency service calls you thinking that you just have had a crash?

Well this ‘guy’ aka Andy Pilgrim racing driver, journalist, traffic safety campaigner a cool kinda dude, had managed just that.

While pushing it in the 755bhp Corvette ZR1 he managed to generate enough G-forces/ Yaw angle for OnStar (GM’s emergency service) operators call him not once but three times during one lap of the 3.2 mile NCM Motorsports Park Circuit.

OnStar got a bit worried when Andy chucked the ‘Vette through the tight S-bends just before the start/finish straight, leading to a call from them asking if anyone got hurt in the ‘crash’ as that’s what they thought had just happened. All as he was in the middle of braking from nearly 150mph to 60mph to take the first corner, great timing OnStar.

Amazingly Andy did not lose his cool one bit and kept giving it his all, while also assuring the OnStar operator that no one is hurt and the car isn’t in fact on its roof explaining that he’s just having a bit of fun. The whole situation then repeats itself less than a minute later when Andy went around a bunch of cars a bit too fast for OneStars team liking, but he pressed on almost unaffected if not a little annoyed.

The whole thing then repeats itself for the last time when Andy hits the ankers down after crossing the finish line, there is no official word on what caused the calls from GM. Automobile Magazine with whom Andy works said that the GM engineers weren’t able to give a definitive answer for why the calls happened, and claimed that it only happens with Andy behind the wheel saying. “ Even more odd, Chevy insisted to us that it in all its miles of ZR1 track testing, it has only heard of this scenario when Pilgrim is the driver behind the wheel, and only when he’s flogging the car at the NCM track.” -Automobilie Magazine
