State of The Chapter With Covid-19 slowing down, but yet not gone, we look forward to our summer months to drive, judge and show our Corvettes. Several of our members attended the Louisiana Regional on April 7-9 and the Indiana Regional on April 28-30. We continue to hold monthly Technical Sessions, Judging Events, Judging Schools and Social Activities. As you may also be aware we are hosting a 2023 Regional in Rochester, MN on June 8-10, 2023. We are currently looking for volunteers to help with our Regional. Remember we are hosting our NCRS neighbors, friends and fellow Corvette lovers. So, step up and help the club by VOLUNTEERING VOLUNTEERING.. Here’s a recap of the club events and activities during the past three months. Chairman • Board Meetings: The April board meeting was scheduled and held on March 31, the other two Alden Miles meetings were on May 5 and June 2. The meetings were conducted at Davanni’s on White Bear Ave. in East St. Paul. • Technical Sessions: On April 23, fifteen (15) members attended and helped prepare for Flight Judging at Jerome Lardy’s house on his 79 Coupe. On May 21, eighteen (18) members attended a Judging Sheet Review at Perry Canton’s house on his 67 Convertible. No June Technical Session was held due to Back to the 50’s annual event that many members attend. • Social Activities: On May 7, sixteen (16) members attended dinner at Lucky 13 Pub in Mendota, MN. • Judging School/Events: On May 13 & 14, forty-two (42) members attended the Spring Judging Event at Alden & Lyn Miles’s shop with 6 Flight cars, 3 Sportsman cars and 1 Display car. On June 18, eight (8) members and one tabulator Flight Judged at Mark Swanson’s house on his 56 Convertible. Congratulations on his Top Flight Award. We continue to look for suggestions from our club members on how to improve our club events and increase membership participation. Please feel free to contact me with your ideas. Paragon Rewards Program Continuing our Sixth Year

The North Central Chapter is in its sixth consecutive year in the Paragon Rewards Program. In past years the rewards dollars were used as door prizes, raffle prizes, etc. at chapter events such as tech sessions, judging meets, and social functions. In the next few weeks we’ll find out our rewards dollars earned in 2021, and we’ll be sharing that news with you in a future monthly Chapter update or Newsletter. The chapter currently has in excess of 35 members participating in the Rewards Program. We owe a great big thank you to these 35+ members for purchasing Corvette parts from Paragon Corvette. Membership Update Back to the 50’s - Sarah and I attended the Back to the 50’s weekend and set up a booth to promote the NCRS. We talked Current Members with several people who showed interest and we gave them an informational brochure to take home. Several of our members also attended this show and everybody had a great time. If you have never been to this car show, it is something to see as it fills the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. There are over 10,000 cars registered from 1964 and earlier. No Mustangs are allowed!!!! Email invitations - In April, I sent out emails to 92 NCRS members in our area who did not belong to our chapter, encouraging them to join. Three members took us up on this offer. We are now up to 148 members. Chairman Chapter members - Bill Braun is the Chairman of the Illinois Chapter. We now have all the Chairman of the chapters in our Region V as members. We are hoping this encourages the interchange of ideas and participation between the chapters. New Members: Don Kohlenberger lives in Prior Lake, MN and owns a 1980 Corvette with 2,800 miles on the odometer. He had the car judged at our spring judging meet where it received a Top Flight Award. Glenn Nelson resides in Pipestone, MN and he has a 1965, 396hp Corvette with 45K miles. He mentioned it was for sale if anybody is interested. He is also looking for a driver ’58 Corvette. Doug Rudquist lives in Osceola, WI and is the proud owner of a 1970 Stingray convertible and a 2003, 50th Anniversary convertible. Lee Swanson calls Detroit Lakes, MN home. Lee owns a 1965 327/365hp Corvette and a 1981 coupe. John Van Hove resides in Menomonie, WI and was encouraged to join our chapter by Tim and Lynda DeAtley and myself. I spent time with John at the MCACN car show in Chicago last year. Scott Koblitz lives in Holmen, WI and he has a beautiful 1970 Corvette. It received a Top Flight Award at the Wisconsin Chapter meet. We encouraged him to bring his car to our Regional Meet in Rochester, MN next June. Matt Stang found out about us online and submitted an application. Matt lives in Eagan, MN and he owns a 1977 L48 Corvette with 65k miles. Welcome to all our new members. Chapter Social North Central NCRS Spring Social - May 7, 2022 The annual North Central NCRS Spring Social was held on Saturday, May 7 at 5:30 p.m. at Lucky’s 13 (1352 Sibley Memorial Hwy, Mendota, MN 55150). There were 16 members that joined us for some great food & drink and even better conversation. Prizes were given away as well! Don O’Grady Activity Chairman

NCRS Foundation Scholarships Now is the time to encourage students to apply for an NCRS Foundation Scholarship. Applications must be postmarked between June 15, 2022 and August 12, 2022 to be considered. Over the past 13 years, 161 scholarships totaling $245,500 have been awarded. Scholarships are available to NCRS members, their children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Over the years, we have had several chapter members whose family members have received these scholarships. Wisconsin Chapter Travels with Bob- a Journey to the Wisconsin Chapter Spring Event June 3-4, 2022 It was early Friday morning before traffic even got started in the Twin Cities. It was so early even I couldn’t believe I was up. But we needed to get to Reedsburg, WI before the cars got unloaded for Ops. I drove to Bob’s house in Bloomington. And there was Bob, cleaning the windshield of the Monte Carlo- our ride. Would you believe it, O Dark Thirty, and we were off to Wisconsin. The Monte was in rare form. A smooth ride without any problems until we got to the Road Closed signs and Detours. But we survived and pulled into Reedsburg in time to make the Subway sandwich shop. It wasn’t too long after and Chris and Kevin stopped for lunch. Then to the Ice Arena to start judging. And Alden, Lynn and Jerome showed up. We didn’t stop at OPS, we did Concours, and even threw in a Mechanical. Then it was time for a Judging School on wheels. You know, the stuff cars ride on with tires. We learned a lot as usual as the Wisconsin Chapter is well organized. Then we took a break before returning for Supper and sat around and talked with all our friends. Supper, did I say Supper? It was a feast. Prime rib with chicken and all the trimmings. Wisconsin Chapter as I said really knows how to treat a guy. It took us a while to push ourselves away from the table and back to our rooms for some well deserved rest. Did I say the hotel we were staying in had all the covers from magazines that had Norman Rockwell as the artist. It was worth the price of admission. Up early, breakfast and off to the Judging to do the remaining sections. And Donuts and coffee awaited us. Tearing ourselves away we got back to the cars. And what cars there were. We did our best to get everything

done before they spread out Subway sandwiches, cookies and beverages for us. We were really taken care of. Then Dennis called us together for the awards. They awarded the sponsors first, I like their program for sponsors. Then the Car Owners got their ribbons and of course the Sportsmen. It was hard to say goodbye to such great friends. Bob had the Monte all ready and we avoided the road blocks and took a better way home. Jerome followed knowing Bob would not lead him wrong. Then gas, yup she don’t run on air, and down the road we went. Bob had a plan to stop at this great park in Menominee. We ate our box lunch, Wisconsin Chapter wanted us to be well taken care of. And then home to Bloomington and then off to Vadnais for a well deserved rest. Til next time. Dave Murphy

2022 Spring Chapter Meet

This year, the North Central Chapter hosted our usual Spring Meet in May. We had two days of wonderful weather, great cars and great friends. I’d like to extend a special thank you to all of the out-of-town travelers that helped come to the Twin Cities area to make our event as successful as it was. Our gracious hosts, Alden and Lyn Miles, opened up their shop to the Chapter. We were able to host six Flight cars, two Sportsman cars and two display cars. Chapter Tech Session On May 21st a Tech Session was held as a training session on C2 cooling systems and how to navigate the judging sheets and determine a course of action for work required to increase the points earned at future judging events. 18 members showed up at Perry Canton’s on a rather chilly morning to go over a ‘67 Red/Red Coupe that had gone through the Spring Chapter Meet one year ago to the day. Thanks goes to Jerome Lardy for again supplying excellent donuts. Bob Lund and Chris Enstrom shared the spotlight and traded time going over their topics. The ‘67 has had an unusual overheating issue where you can drive at 30 mph all day long, but going up to 60 mph, then down to 30 mph results in an almost immediate overheating. The vehicle has had very few miles on the road since the engine rebuild and restoration (basically test drives). Bob explained how the system works and went over some of the components that can cause an issue such as timing, thermostat, radiator, coolant (50/50 mix old green and distilled water), water pump, 15# radiator cap, fan clutch, entrapped air, etc. Members asked questions, gave their insight, and offered suggestions. Bob removed and disassembled the distributor to show where issues may occur (weights, springs, vacuum advance, etc.). Bob demonstrated how to achieve top dead center on the first cylinder before removing the distributor - makes for correctly easily reinserting the distributor. Bob will put in Breakerless ignition (38131) from Lectric Limited to replace the points and go thru the distributor. After retiming the engine, that eliminates one of many possible faults in the system and we go on from there. While Bob is working on the distributor, the thermostat will be replaced with a small hole drilled into the flange. Once back on the road the fan clutch will be tested. As a side note, the heater was not working so Bob talked about the vacuum valve behind the glove box. This is only a feature of cars with air conditioning. A couple of members removed the glove box and Bob showed how he had to push the valve back and forth. One member mentioned how Bob had him use 3 in 1 oil to loosen the valve. After everyone had left and before I went up north to a graduation, I tried it out. The valve now freely snaps back - now only if the vacuum works and the hose does not leak and I may have heat. Stay tuned as we work out the overheating issue (maybe a future article). Chris Enstrom went over the history of the car being judged and the judging sheets to determine what can be done to increase the point total. The car in fact has a cushion to work with so if I want to put a film on the front end, the point deduction would not impact the overall score. Chris pointed to the Operations Section issues (ease of starting, heater fan, seat back latches) and how they can be corrected. This was not the only place where drivability would also enter the picture. Replacing the worn front springs and appropriately tagging them would achieve points and enhance the handling. There were a few issues that were easy fixes (gaskets and washers) or missing decals / tags. There also were deductions that would be either too expensive or hard to fix, as in the standard deductions for the paint and utilizing new battery technology. Chris gave us a good take on using the judging sheets to address what you need to look at before your next judging event. The sheets can also point to areas that may be of safety concerns like the reversed door locks and non-operationing seat latches. The Next Chapter I find myself preparing for a series of journeys. Last year I sold my Blue 66 convertible just when I had found all the previous owners and had wrapped up my lists of what’s next to repair. But as you know, you are always one repair away based on your next drive. Two months later I ventured over to a hanger at an airport near me and fell in love with a lady in Red. Actually a Red on Red with a white top. She had been waiting for someone and I guess that someone was me. She was exactly as she was launched in 1991. Nothing altered, 19k miles, and ready for our first date. I was a little nervous driving her home as she still had on her original dancing shoes. When we got home I just sat back. I knew I needed new tires, but I did not want to disturb those original dancing shoes so I got a new set of rims to go with the new tires. Then it was go through everything, just once to get her ready for a Chapter Judging. She wanted a bath, new fluids, battery and of course manuals to become better acquainted. She did not disappoint. Now we had the sheets and it was time to really go over everything as the next journey was to a Regional for a PV. The key items were: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

CD did not work. Emergency Brake did not work. Passenger Door required a nut on door for latch Headlight Motors needed new plastic bearings. Middle Brake Light did not work. Back up lights did not work. 1-4 shift wiring was disconnected. Fluids need changing.

I also ordered new wipers and air cleaner filter. Air Cleaner filters analysis opened new doors which I will cover in a separate article. Plus because we decided to drive to PV, I ordered air monitors for the tires, a phone holder for ease of following

GPS, a portable air compressor and battery connectors. 1)I researched who can repair the CD and selected United Radio in New York. Pulled the radio, sent it off to repair and re-installed. 2)The Emergency Brake solution could be a number of issues, but the smart money was on the handle. Took a while but finally got the handle off. Now what. Its covered in a shellac that makes no sense. It was time to call Mirrock. Mark said its not shellac, its grease that has hardened over 30 years of no use. Solution? WD40. Spray it on heavy to melt the old grease. It worked. Re-install and it worked! 3)Door latch. This is a 1991 and the 92-96 did not have this feature. Needed a shielded nut and then remove door panel and figure it out. There are a lot of connectors in a door panel. Old connectors have to be treated kindly. Two tangs on my lid opener broke, so I needed a new switch. Ordered the nut and switch from Mirrock. How to get the nut onto the latch? The opening is so small. ? ? Lower the window. More room. Pull back rubber gasket. Ah, room. It went on! Now to put panel back on. 4) Why do my headlight motors spin whenever I attach the battery? I learned from Mark at Mirrock that there are three plastic parts that are cut from a rod that have turned to powder. Luckily Mirrock has a video that shows the tools needed and how to take the headlights off the car, take them apart and re-build. I could take the headlights off by myself and I learned that the 91 had some unique attachments. But now I needed help to remount. And did the motor reset so that it opened correctly? Darned if it didn’t work correctly and no more spin. 5) Got to work on the Middle Brake Light. It needed a new bulb. 6) The Back Up Lights needed a new switch. Up on the hoist the car went. 15

7) 1-4 shift? Important for PV. Back on the hoist. 8) What fluids to change that I don’t want to? We changed the oil and Transmission but Brake, Clutch and Coolant. Why? Mess. So I went to a shop close to my house. What about checking for codes? Supposedly when you disconnect the battery, the codes are removed. Bought a code reader. No codes. We practiced going through the PV twice. We are ready.

me celebrate. The next morning we packed up and headed back 600 miles to our homes. Next stop, Rochester Regional June 2023.

Travels with Chris – A PV run at the 2022 Indiana Regional The run began on Wednesday April 27, but getting ready for the PV happened months before. I had gotten my copy of 1990-1996 2nd Edition Corvette Operations Manual & Performance Verification Test Guide. Jerome Lardy and Chris drilled me on what to do and how to do it. The car was in great shape. It was me that needed the coaching. Then a week before we were to go, Chris drilled me and the car again. We packed the tools we needed and the limited clothes we were going to take. We added tire pressure gauges to each tire so we did not get surprised and we had a tire pump for added measure. I picked up Chris, topped off the tank, realized I had forgotten my prescription sunglasses so bought a pair that would fit over my glasses. And the journey began. Up to 94 and into Wisconsin. I told Chris that my oil and water temp gauges did not seem to move. He said don’t worry about them, it was still a cold day. Two hours later, still no movement. Concern. Chris started calling places in Auburn Indiana for parts. Then as we got closer to Madison, he started calling places in Madison.

We spent a few hours with our friends at Firestone who were able to fix our water temp sensor and at the same time our oil temp sensor

started working again. And we were off to Auburn. Still had to negotiate Chicago but we made it. Next morning up early to prepare the car and meet Tom Barr at 10 am for our PV. It all began quite nicely. Car started and then we had to move the car. At the new site, Tom

went through the checklist. Everything worked. Then the road test. We had a short stop to evaluate the shift light and off we went to flying colors. I was never so glad to hear Tom’s praises for the car. He also thought I did pretty good. That was Thursday morning.

We went back to see Jerome, Sarah, Alden, Lyn, Dave and Jeanne and all our extended Chapter friends who were Judging and chatting with owners. The time flew and we were finally at the Banquet on Saturday night. Receiving the award was so much fun. I got to be with all my friends. Chris, Alden and Lyn helped 16

Travels with Chris Jerome, Sarah and Bob April Fools Day 2022, off to the Iowa Chapter Spring Judging. It was a Friday. Just another day. Weather was decent for early April. Just a pleasant drive to Iowa. Or that is what I thought. Remember, Bob is along. And it is April Fools Day. Not that he has the corner on jokes, but he did ask me to text Alden and let him know I35 was closed at Albert Lea. Jerome and Bob were awake and anxious to get to our destination. Sarah rested. We did the normal stays on the way – Culvers – Friday in Lent. Destination Stuart Iowa. Six cars- FIve Flight and One 54 Red Concours awaited us. The Flight cars were very unique – A yellow 55, a red 61, a black 67, a white 68 PLUS a 54 Concours (all convertibles). One car had dropped out, a 1969 convertible. We arrived, registered and went right to work on Ops. Then One more section was completed once the cars got indoors before dinner. Dinner was at Gary Neimanis’s place on the lake at his Man Cave. The drive was easy and we went by a homemade chocolate shop on the way- Jerome would not stop. The Man Cave was awesome and Gary’s

neighbor had palm trees! The Food was BBQ and Fish (Friday in Lent) and was quite good. The Dinner being completed, the big moment ar-

was just about perfect, a red 54 Concours. At noon a great lunch was served followed by a presentation by Gary Bossellman on Standard Deductions. Some nodded off. Then the awards and off to Minnesota. We waited til almost the Minnesota Border before our ice cream break. As darkness over took us, our jourrived – a Race between a C1 (1960) ney ended. and C8 (2021). The Drivers got into their cars, the starter got them ready and gave the command to Start Your Engines! Taching Up- Louder and Louder. The starter threw up the flag and when the dust had cleared, the C1 had lowered his top first. The

C8 asked for a redo. The C1 raised its top first. It was all over except for the crying. With entertainment and dinner done, we headed for the hotel. Jerome still refused to stop at the chocolate shop. Next morning after a breakfast

that couldn’t be beat, we headed for the judging. And more coffee and donuts. Some sections took longer than others but all cars wrapped up around noon. The cars were so unique, a 67 big block with side pipes, a yellow 55 with green interior accents and green top, a white 68 big block that was once owned by Steve McWhirter, a Red 61 that 17

Battery Disconnects The Easy Point! What is a disconnect? Why would I need one? How do you install them? Hopefully this short tech tip can answer the questions. Now before you make a decision on what you need, ask yourself can I do this. If you are not sure then it is my recommendation that you ask your mechanic to install it for you. If you install it improperly you run the risk of serious damage to your Corvette and possible injury to yourself. great if you have a top mount battery, however most C3 and later cars have a side mount terminal. For this you would use one as pictured below. Note that the position of these disconnects will vary depending on the size and space available in your car.

What is a Battery Disconnect you ask? Battery disconnect switches are used to prevent power leakage that can slowly deplete battery life. They are installed inline on the negative lead and feature a switch or button operation that allows the battery power supply to be easily turned off and on. On your N.C.R.S. Flight Operations Judging sheets you will find on the bottom the page that there are bonus points for having a battery disconnect switch. [It should be noted that some venues require a battery disconnect switch to have your car on the judging field.] There are several types of disconnect switches that are available. Pictured above is the top post knob type. This is a very simple switch that allows you to turn the knob to disconnect the battery. The blade type pictured is another simple way to disconnect your battery with the throw of a switch. Note that these types are for the Top mount battery terminal. This is

The above pictured disconnects are the most common. There are other types available. However, for simplicity these are the types that I have chosen. Installation When disconnecting the cables from the old battery, disconnect the negative first, then the positive. Once the cables have been removed it is now a good time to clean your battery terminals to ensure you have a good electrical contact when finished.

Once you have the terminals and the battery posts clean you are ready to install your disconnect switch. Fasten the disconnect switch to the negative battery terminal. A coating of dielectric grease is helpful to prevent future corrosion issues.

Once you have the switch in place and secure now connect the Positive battery cable to your battery. Again, make sure that the connection is tight and a bit of dielectric grease will be useful. The final step is to connect the Negative battery cable to the disconnect switch. Make sure that when connecting that you do not touch the positive terminal as it will be live and this will cause a short circuit. I personally recommend removing the knob or opening the blade when connecting the cable to the switch. Once all connections are secure then simply close the blade or tighten the knob to make connection for your cars circuit. You will more than likely have to reprogram any ETR radios. If you have a 1980s vintage car this can be a bit of a challenge. The battery disconnect is a simple and effective way to protect your car and will help to maintain years of battery service life. The electrical draw of radios and other devices will over time drain your battery. With the installation of the disconnect your battery will be ready for your next ride with the throw of a switch. NCRS Judging is recognized around the world as THE STANDARD in determining originality. The Judging System is designed to educate each owner about their car as well as providing recognition for excellence in the areas of restoration, performance, or preservation. You can learn to judge through participation. Start out as an observer judge and work your way to Master Judge through the Judges Recognition Program. JUDGE NCRS Judges are volunteer members who offer their time and knowledge to Judge Members Cars under the guidance of the NCRS Technical Information Manual & Judging Guide. Master Judge NCRS Master Judges are volunteer members who have been recognized by the organization and membership for accumulating a minimum of 100 points in our judging recognition program by Judging at events, attending Judging Schools at Chapter Meets, Regional Meets and National Meets. Member of the Month April - Mark Shobe Mark Shobe and is wife Jane have three children Steph, Samantha and Patrick. Mark owns a 64 Coupe, 327, 4 speed. Original accept wildwood front disks. (Kept all the original brake parts) and a 73 Coupe, 350 (Hotrodder), Auto.

My 73 was the reintroduction to a fun car after the kids got older. I did exactly what they say not to do. I bought about 5 years ago and it was cheap but was tired. After rebuilding the engine, transmission, rear end, front end and interior it is now a reliable car for transportation. I will never get what I got into it so have no plans to sell it. After buying that car is when I decide to join NCRS. I am not a 100% purist, but the networking and knowledge that comes from our community is great!

I bought my 64 2 years ago once I had a little more knowledge about Corvettes. I was not planning on buying another car, but when I saw the advertisement for $43,000 I could not pass it up. It was not my ideal mid-year but it was close enough for the value. I have not HAD TO do anything to the car other than drive it about 15,000 miles. Took my fist longer trip

in it last summer to Road America out by Milwaukee. The car had no issues on the drive, but gosh a reclining seat, heads up display and sound proofing would be nice! What is your next Corvette project? I am just hustling to complete a front end rebuild and front disk brake conversion on the 64. I have kept all of the original parts and along with the brakes have installed new adjustable shocks, HD swaybar, Springs, steering box and Poly bushings. My hope is to do a little auto crossing with it this summer. As much as I like looking at a vintage car I want to experience driving them as it was intended. As one who always wants to have a good looking car I sent the front bumpers off to get re-chromed this fall. They were plenty shiny, but had been banged up over the years enough that they did not look fresh. I put around 7,000 miles on each car last season and really enjoy the conversations at the pump and fun of a time machine. I know the C3 is not everyone’s favorite, but man… there is just something about that long, long hood! North Central Chapter: When did you join? I joined about 3-4 years ago. I enjoy the national club magazine and the knowledge I have picked up from the group at a few events. May - Tom Roberts

Member of the Month years. I worked most of my career in quality engineering and regulatory engineering compliance on 3M hardware products.

June - Jeff Nelson I’m a newer member of the NCRS North Central Chapter, having joined in Nov. 2020. My wife Karen and I have been married for about 16 years. Between us, we have five children, Kasey, Ben, Ana, Elise, and Laura. We also have five grandchildren, Caleb, Thomas, Alexa, Ellie, and Penelope. I retired from 3M in September of 2017 after 39+

I have two Corvettes: a 2007 Monterey Red Coupe (“Yvette”), LS2, 3LT, Z51, and a 1973 Silver Coupe (“Sylvia”), L82, 4-spd. I bought the 2007 in February of 2011 from a guy in Buffalo, NY. The car was a one owner with 6,217 miles. I’ve volunteered to help with the development of the NCRS 2005-2007 Corvette Technical Information Manual and Judging Guide. I’ve been taking photos and providing technical information as requested with this car. I plan to continue with helping with this effort. I bought the 1973 in October of 2020 during COVID. Winters are hard enough in WI/MN, and not being able to travel, I was getting stir crazy and needed a project. Karen encouraged me to get a hobby/project, so I bought the ‘73. The car has special meaning as this was the year I graduated from high school. I can remember sitting in study hall looking at car magazines when this car came out – and of course I wanted one. It only took 47 years to get one! I’m the seventh owner of this car. Fortunately, some of the previous owners saved documentation and parts that they removed. The car came with four large cardboard boxes of stuff. I’ve had a blast going through the car, making repairs, and getting an idea of what was in all the boxes. One of my next projects will be to replace the chambered straight pipe exhaust with a correct aftermarket exhaust. As mentioned above, I joined the North Central Chapter in Nov. 2020. I first heard about the NCRS and the local chapter from Dale and Val Crosby. Not having an older Corvette at the time, I wasn’t particularly in-

terested in joining. Instead, we joined the Chevytown Corvette Club in Menomonie, WI. Tim DeAtley leads this club. As some of you may know, Tim is an avid collector and going to shows to see his cars judged inspired me to get an older car. Tim invited Jerome and Sarah Lardy to come to a Chevytown club event and talk about NCRS and North Central Chapter. I joined shortly after that. I have really enjoyed the tech sessions, learning about the judging process, and getting to know the members. There is so much knowledge in the chapter and I look forward to tapping into it. Karen and I also enjoy the social activities.

This car is a very original car with only the tires and wiper blades being replaced. The interior is in top condition and very clean. This would be a perfect car to have flight judged. Chapter Board Minutes March 31, 2022 Board Members Present: Alden Miles, Paul Burski, Jerome Lardy, Chris Enstrom, Don O’Grady, Bob Lund, Sarah Lardy, Tim Saarela and David Murphy Board Members Absent: Nick Kornder, Kevin Sullivan. Members present: Ken Bartos, Perry Canton, Dale Anderson and Jeff Henry. Location: Davanni’s, 310 White Bear Ave. St Paul, MN Approval of Minutes Meeting Minutes from March 3, 2021 meeting – Motion to approve by Jerome Lardy seconded by Sarah Lardy. Motion passed. Chairman’s Report Alden shared that NCRS sent a check to him of $317.50 which was their matching part of their new policy to match 50% of a chapters’ charitable contribution. Alden was sent the check to show NCRS’s National participation. He was asked to return the check. This was the first year that National has provided 50% matching funds to contributions made to the NCRS Foundation. Therefore, we received the 50% matching fund and then returned it to the Foundation. Meeting Minutes from the National Board were shared by Alden and Alden asked for clarification on the profit and net loss figures. The new President, Shannon, will be at the Louisiana Regional and he has asked to meet with her. Vice Chairman’s Report Paul had nothing to add at this time. Treasurer’s Report. Tim reported that all was uneventful. A report will be sent to Alden next week when Tim has the monthly report. Tim will also send Sarah the account credentials as discussed in previous meetings. Judging Report Chris reported we need judges for the May Judging event at Gilby’s. Chris then asked David to review the Boards appetizer selections. David reported the responses and made a motion to approve the following selections with the Boards approval to add a Vegetable selection with some Fruit Kabobs for those members who have dietary concerns. Chips & Salsa; Cheese cubed platter; BBQ cocktail smokies; Swedish meatballs; Chicken tenders; Snack mix; Jerome seconded and the motion carried. Membership Report Jerome reported that we had 138 members with the addition of Gary Bosselman and Mike Treece taking us to 140. Alden shared that all Chapter Chairs in our Region are in agreement to be members of each other’s chapter (at no cost) to provide for timely sharing of information. Tech Report Bob asked Paul to share the Judging School on Saturday, March 12 at Paul’s storage condo in Prescott, WI. As Paul shared, the event had 19 members and was a success with much sharing and a positive result on reviewing a car for pre-judging. Chris thanked Paul for having set the stage so well and providing treats. Paul is offering his site for future events as needed. Bob discussed a possible Tech Session at Jerome’s house on the 23rd of April and another May 21st Tech Judging combo for a site to be finalized. Activities Report Don said the Spring Social is set up for May 7 at Lucky’s 13 Pub in Mendota, MN. The Fall Social is set for October 15 at Mancini’s Char House in St Paul. Don also mentioned that he is looking into a possible picnic at a local park. Website Report Sarah is looking for photos she can show on social media. Chapter Board Minutes None New Business The location of the 2023 Regional was addressed as there were interests for us to host the Regional at a location closer to the Twin Cities. Alden and Dave Murphy reviewed the State Fairgrounds, Canterbury Downs and Mystic Lake with no success. The sites were either unavailable, too costly or had no venue that met our needs. Chris then reviewed the Rochester site which we have had since 2008. The decision was to stay with the Rochester site and a team meeting will be called after the Spring Judging in May. Member Comments Dale Anderson asked Paul about his 091 Coil. There was a lively discussion and Dale thanked everyone for sharing. Programs for both events were passed around. We also lost one of our NCRS members, Rick Twining at the Auburn Regional. See more on the NCRS Forum. Our condolences to his family. A card will be sent by Sarah. Vice Chairman’s Report Paul had nothing to add at this time. Treasurer’s Report. Tim reported that all was uneventful. Judging Report Chris congratulated Dave Murphy for getting PV at the Auburn Regional. Chris is still working on Chapter Spring meet. We have 6 Flight cars, 2 Sportsmen and 1 Display. We will start at 3:00 pm on Friday May 13 on Ops followed by Chassis. Dinner at 6:30. Mechanical, Interior and Exterior on Saturday with lunch at 11:30. Followed by a Judging School on paint. Sarah asked if we could cover shades/color and Chris said not a problem. This is a 5 pt weekend. Note: Pete Bergman is working on the 05/06/07 Judging manual which is expected in 12 to 24 months. Actual judging will start after French Lick National. We are working on our 2023 Regional and are aware that Pittsburg Chapter will be the week before us. There is also the possibility that Bloomington Gold will be on our same weekend. Chris spoke with our new President, Shannon Urton, about Bloomington Gold and she stated she is talking with them. Membership Report Jerome reported that we have 145 members with the addition four new members: Don Kohlenberger; Glenn Nelson; Doug Rudquist; Lee Swanson; and added Illinois Chapter Chair Bill Braun. Jerome also submitted our 1st Qtr Top Flight report to National. Tech Report Jerome hosted 15 people in April for his 79! And Perry Canton will have us over for his 67 on May 21st. Perry had his car taken through Chapter Judging at our Eagan Spring Judging and we will go back through his sheets in May. Alden mentioned that he brought up this action at the Louisiana Regional when he was attending an Advanced Judging School and it was well received. So what about June? Bob will be occupied so Alden is asking Paul to see what he can find. Activities Report

Don also mentioned that he is looking into a possible picnic at a local park for June 25. Don has two old gift cards from Paragon left - $80 and $90 and suggested we use one at our Spring Judging. Then he has eight new Paragon gift cards valued at $75 each. The One old one and the new ones can be used for Tech Sessions and future events. Don’t forget: Sept 18 – Kisses at Hinckley Website Report Sarah is trying to combine content to minimize emails. She is sorting through the pictures that were sent in- Thank you. At the Indiana Regional, Sarah spoke with President Shannon about marketing to the organization. Newsletter Report The newsletter went out. Still want articles for next one. Member-at-Large Report Kevin Sullivan reported that he is good for the next months but he is running out of members to share and asked that we reconsider his position as he would like to consider a new activity. The board shared ideas and both Don and Dave asked for his help. Old Business: None New Business Jeanne Cloutier asked who is interested in being the next Regional Director. Mike Murray’s name was mentioned so a form was passed around for signatures to nominated Mike. We had discussed a Gift Card for Gilby’s, but as we are not able to be at Gilby’s for our Spring Judging, I have not included that discussion and motion. We will decide if we have enough cars to warrant a Spring Judging or just do one offs to help members get ready for the Regional. We will continue to be cognizant of locations we will need for both Spring and Fall Judging Events for the future. Tech Report There are no plans for June other than the Judging at Mark Swanson’s and Back to the 50’s. Activities Report The Spring event at Lucky’s was attended by 16 members. Don is not able to help us with a picnic due to his schedule and suggested that Kevin may have some ideas. Kevin did have some thoughts but asked the board for some ideas. The board talked about the need to consider different locations to attract members. For instance we have not had an event in the North for a while. Kevin asked if there was a possibility of gathering at Joe Galindos’. Chris mentioned he has an ask into Joe to do some fiberglass work which might tie into also doing the PV review he mentioned earlier on Tim’s car. Kevin and Chris will contact Joe and discuss the possibility of an event that is part picnic, part PV Review and part Fiberglass application. Newsletter Report Nick is always looking for articles. Member-at-Large Report Kevin got Mark Swanson’s permission to share Mark’s article from Straight Axle for our newsletter and in addition Mark will be the member of the month. SPECIAL Presentation on Tabulating by Jeanne Cloutier! In May of 2015 we said farewell to Val Crosby and welcome Jeanne Cloutier. Jeanne cut her teeth on a Chapter Judging and a Regional and began to create a book on tabulation. No documented information regarding the tabulation process was available so Jeanne created the following: • Point Spread Sheet • Tabulation Procedures for Chapter and Regional Judging • Tabulating Summary and Check Off Sheet • Awards on one page • Flight Judging sheets for Banquet and Announcements Jeanne shared not only the documents but the detail behind them. All of this will be provided to the Board and to our members on our website. Chris asked if he could order a Birthday Book for use at our Judging meets and we all approved. Alden asked Chris if we had a list of what awards our members have won. Chris does not, but will ask. Old Business There was none. New Business Kevin shared that his Shriners Club is doing a car show and were looking for donations to go to the Shriners Children’s Hospital. After some discussion, Kevin made a motion to donate $100 to the Shriners Children’s Hospital through his Shriners Club. Paul seconded and the Motion carried. Member Comments Jeanne Cloutier asked if we had thought about having an AED or a First Aid kit at our events after what happened at Auburn. Most public locations where we are at have AED, but we could add a First Aid Kit. After discussions, Dave will assemble First Aid Kit for our events. Dave Cloutier thanked Chris and the Chapter for setting up the Judging for Mark Swanson’s car. David made the motion to adjourn and Chris seconded. Motion carried. MEETING ADJOURNED The NCRS

Membership in the North Central NCRS is open to person interested in the restoration, preservation, and history of the Corvette produced by the Chevrolet Motor Division of General Motors Corporation from 1953 thought 1999. NCRS is not affiliated with Chevrolet or General Motors. Membership in the North Central Chapter of the NCRS is open to all members of the NCRS National organization. Dues payable to the North Central Chapter are $25.00 per years. All editorial materials should be sent to Nick Kornder, Editor, (Kornder@NorthernSun.org). Advertising in the North Central Newsletter is free to all active members for personal items. Commercial advertising rates for the newsletter are: $12.50 per year for a business card; $25.00 per year for a half page ad and $50 per year for a full page ad. MAKING JUDGING SHEET REFERENCES BASED ON THE C-D-C-I-F As the NCRS judging system is based on 5 different descriptions for ORIGINALITY, with each having a value of 20%, it is most helpful to the owner, that we use the same descriptions for the comments on the sheets, when we judge their cars. C = CONFIGURATION D = DATE C = COMPLETENESS I = INSTALLATION F = FINISH The use of words like “Service Replacement”, “Reproduction” or “Restoration” are very little to no help to the owner, since they do not describe WHAT the difference to original is. Since we judge the APPEARANCE of ORIGINALITY, we do not care where the particular judged part comes from (Original GM, Restoration Parts House or Neighbors Shed). BAD WORDS:

Certain parts, which do not reflect any Originality based on the CDCIF (Full Deduction) are not listed on our Standard Deduction Sheet. Such parts may be described as: SIGNIFICANTLY DISSIMILAR. A good example is the typical parts-house (AutoZone, O’Riley etc.) Cooling Fan Clutch. Judging Example: One of the most often “non-original” parts encountered on the chassis are the shock absorbers. They are a single line item and have a value of 5 points. Based on the CDCIF we can make the following determination: Configuration: Check nuances on the shock absorber body (may be different print, “Made in Mexico” etc.) Date: Check for presence of date. (Not necessary, if a non-typical configuration has been detected) Completeness: Are any factions missing?? Installation: Are the bolts, washers at their intended places and orientation (or reversed)?? Finish: Is the shock painted in a typical finish (lower bushings free of paint etc)?? Conclusion: A shock absorber with “Made In Mexico,” finished and installed in a typical manner would differ in the Configuration (1 Point) as well as the Date (1 point) since we know that a shock with such configuration was manufactured later than the car. A group of 19 Technical Advisors, who are recognized as the authorities in their fields, are also just a letter or e-mail away. Whatever problems that you might run into has been solved in past years by other NCRS members. At the chapter level we are always looking for Tech Session ideas. This is NOT the chapter coming to work on your Corvette. It is the chapter coming to HELP YOU work on your Corvette as you learn more about your piece of American History. For Sale 1979 Corvette I am selling my 1979 Corvette with the Classic White exterior and red leather interior. It has the 5.7 liter, 4-bbl, L-48 engine with the automatic transmission. 41,300 miles are on the odometer. Other options include removable glass roof panels, electric rear window defogger, cruise control, AM-FM stereo radio with power antenna (not working). Also includes an 8 track player, Tilt-telescoping steering wheel and power windows. The car now has rally wheels with Mastercraft Avenger GT tires, but the original tires and aluminum wheels are included. I am the third owner (1 year) and only selling this as I promised my wife I would sell a Corvette if I bought another one.
