I joined the North Central Chapter in June of 2013, because I wanted to meet people who restored Corvette’s, or know people who do. I hav We have a 1958 Corvette that I have taken completely apart to do a nut and bolt frame off restoration. When complete it will be Regal Turquoise, White Coves, Charcoal Interior, with White Convertible Top. The options will include, 283ci x 270hp, 4-Speed Transmission, Heater, Courtesy Lights, Power Windows, Wonder Bar Radio and Positraction. en if I am still working on a Corvette to judge.

Membership Update

Things have slowed down a little bit during the summer. Current Members This is probably due to my increased work load and family functions which have kept me from attending several of the Corvette shows. With that said, we did have two new members join our chapter. I continue to see past NCRS members coming back to the hobby as their lives are now allowing them to have more free time to enjoy their Corvettes. Our new members are part of this group.

Dave Hagen says he was a chapter member from 1990 until around 2008. Dave owns a 1968 convertible with the removable hardtop. It is powered by the 427/390hp motor. Dave lives in St Paul, MN and was encouraged to rejoin by Dave Murphy, our newsletter editor.

Craig Skaaden resides in Fridley, MN and he also owns a ’68 convertible with the L71 motor.

Craig purchased his Corvette in 1969. Craig met one of our chapter members at the Stillwater Motors Corvette Show who persuaded him to rejoin the NCRS. Thanks again to our members who encourage other Corvette owners to join our chapter.

About the North Central NCRS Formed in 1974, the National Corvette Restorers Society is a non-profit hobby group of 15,800+ families dedicated to the restoration, preservation, history and enjoyment of Corvettes.

Founded in 1988 the North Central Chapter is chartered by the NCRS National to support and organize Corvette hobby activities in the Upper Midwest to further the NCRS National philosophy of preservation and restoration of Corvettes.

The NCRS North Central Chapter is based in the Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN metro area with the majority of membership spanning throughout Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota and South Dakota.

Chapter Happenings

Summer BBQ at Tim and Lynda DeAtley Well the weather was not so great but the cars were. We started off from Hudson, WI and took the back-way Hwy 29 to Menomonie and caught up with Tim outside of town where he guided the group back to his and Lynda’s beautiful home. Some of Tim’s local car friends joined us for the day as well. Tim keeps his newer Corvettes in the upper garage and his C2s and C3s in his man cave outback. After a walk, thru we all enjoyed lunch and time to talk cars and solve the world’s problems. A drawing was held and we gave away two $30 gift certificates. Winners were Lynda DeAtley and Jim Spag. After lunch Chris Enstrom held a judging class down in the man cave, where we all teamed up to look over a few items on different cars. Tim has just added a beautiful 1969 427 Tripower to his collection. Hope to see more of you at the Fall Color Run - Don O’Grady, North Central NCRS Activities Director

The North Central Chapter of the NCRS has received NCRS Chapter Top Flight Award for a fifth straight year (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 & 2016).

Did you know?

While never offered to the public, a total of 43 - 1983 model Corvettes were built. There were so many quality problems with them it was decided to halt production until they could be corrected. By the time the problems were corrected, it was so late into the model year that the car was brought out as a 1984 model and was run for a year and a half. The only verifiable 1983 Corvette still known to exist is on display in the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Chapter Judging

Summer BBQ at Tim and Lynda DeAtley Got an IDEA? For the second Judging School of the season, the North Central Chapter was graciously hosted by Tim and Linda DeAtley in Menomonie, WI. The DeAtley’s own an impressive collection of Corvettes and opened their home up to club members. Even though the drive out there was wet, everyone had a great time. For the Judging School, we reviewed five different C3 Corvettes that they own. We talkIf you have a suggested topic for an ed about the judging process and practiced judging a few upcoming Judging School, elements on each car. please contact Chris Enstrom 651-503-4165.

The North Central Chapter once again hosted our Fall Chapter Judging Meet. We had five cars that participated in the Flight Judging program, and two cars that were on Sportsman display. In addition to that, many members chose to drive their Corvettes to the event since the weather was so nice. Here are the results from the event.

Chapter Tech Sessions

Pete Heunisch Engine Install - 1969 350/350 Roadster On July 29th I,Pete Heunisch hosted a tech session for my 69 roadster. The topic of this session was installing my recently rebuilt 350/350 motor and tranny. There were many doughnuts consumed and lots of knowledge and stories told by master mechanic Bob Lund and others.

At the end of the session all of the doughnuts were gone and my motor and tranny were back in my car! I couldn’t have done it without the NCRS boys and their tools. It was a great learning experience and I throughly enjoyed being underneath my car to catch the tranny and slide her into place. Thanks guys!

Chapter Tech Tips

Taking care of those pesky oil drips It doesn’t matter how well you’ve restored your Corvette, when left un-driven for a while particularly over the winter, they can drip a little fluid. Maybe some engine oil, or transmission fluid, and perhaps a little differential fluid. Whatever the fluid, I want to protect whatever is underneath my car. And in my case that’s another Corvette. For you it might be the same or a nice clean garage floor. I had been using a few smaller pans in appropriate places but I wanted something larger to satisfy my concerns of not damaging my underneath Corvette.

While walking through Menards it hit me. I bought a white plastic washing machine pan. The ones that go under a washing machine typically when washers are on the second floor of homes. This one is 28” X 30”, with a nice 2” lip all the way around. Being white it’s easy to see if and when drips start to occur and deal with them. The cost was a little over $13.00 after 11% rebate.

A couple of Restoration Tips Over the past few years I’ve spent hundreds of hours working on and restoring two midyear Corvettes. Now I’m relatively new to this hobby of restoring Corvettes, and it seems like each time I working on a project I wind up doing it twice. As I’ve made my mistakes through trial and error I’ve come across a few tricks I thought I’d pass along. These might be old news to some reading this article, but hopefully some of you will find them helpful Tissue boxes Save empty tissue boxes. Turn them upside down and poke holes in them with a punch just large enough to hold screws and bolts when painting them.

Cereal boxes I used lots of newspaper under parts as I was cleaning and scrubbing the dirt, rust and grease off them. The newspaper would disintegrate in short order. Instead of newspaper I started cutting and saving empty cardboard cereal boxes. Cut them open and lay them flat and use them instead of newspaper when cleaning parts. They seem to last a little longer.

Lamp wire I can’t take credit for this last one. I saw this on YouTube, tried it, and it worked great. Every now and then I’ve run into a screw or bolt hole where the threads were stripped and the hole was just slightly larger than original. I did not want to tap the hole to a larger size as I wanted to maintain the correct size head of the screw or bolt even though the bolt or screw was loose in the hole. I tried using a toothpick or match stick, but they just didn’t seem to hold well enough. Here’s the trick. Buy a foot of lamp wire, strip the outer insulation off and cut off an inch or so of the fine copper wires. Bend 2, 3or 4 strands of the copper wire into “U” shapes and push them into the hole. As you do bend the two ends of each “U” outward at the hole opening. Now screw in the bolt or screw and the threads will bite against the copper wire and it will make a very tight fit. Now this treatment is not for places where you need high torque, but it does work for those spots around the car where a nice tight firm fit is all you need.

The original front emblem and horn button on the “Autorama” show circuit Corvette featured crossed American and checkered flags. It was later discovered that using an American flag on a product trade mark was against the law and the emblem was changed shortly before the New York Motorama.

Chapter Board Minutes

August, 2017

Board Members Present: Alden Miles, Jerome Lardy, Bob Lund, Chris Enstrom, Dave Murphy, Paul Burski, Nick Kornder Board Members Absent: Rick Zierhut, Roger Carlson, Don O’Grady Location: Nick Kornder’s House - Lakeville, Minn.

Approval of Minutes Meeting Minutes from the Aug 3, 2017 meeting were approved – Motion to approve by Jerome Lardy, seconded by Nick Kornder.

Vice President’s Report Last year we did World of Wheels Show and Bruce Cheetah invite us back. Do we want to do it again? After discussion Nick made a motion and Bob seconded to attend the show again. All approved.

Dave Murphy made a motion to have the club pay the $50 entry fee per car for seven cars. Jerome seconded. All approved.

Treasurer’s Report.

All is well.

Judging Report It was a great judging school at Tim DeAtley’s for early and late C3’s. The Fun Run ran into rain, but those that attended had a good time interacting and meeting Tim DeAtleys’ club members.

Now to get keyed up for next year’s judging. Chris will stay on for next year. This was a delight to all present.

Website Report The member list was updated and Member of the Month was added.

Newsletter Report Newsletter will be delayed until Oct 7.

Membership Report Been quiet.

Tech Report Soliciting Tech Session for Sept. Email to be sent. October Tech Session will be at Dave Murphy’s.

Activities Report It was suggested to have the Fall Color Run in the Twin Cities around the Lakes in Mpls starting at 10 am and ending with a lunch. A map will be submitted to the committee.

Member-at-Large Report This has been difficult lately. It was suggested that we might want a Member of the Quarter.

Old Business It was suggested to cross reference the membership list with the birthday list to make sure we have not missed anyone and to clean up the list. It was also suggested it would be a good idea to get a current membership list to everyone.

New Business It was suggested that we hold the October meeting as part of the Fun Run. This was reviewed with the President and it was decided to have these two events stay separate.

As Board elections are in Oct. A Ballot was prepared and will be sent out by Nick for member input via email. Then after two weeks of input, Nick will send the ballot to the club members to submit their votes to be tabulated and election completed at Oct 5th Board Meeting and new officers for 2018 announced.
