State of The Chapter As with so many things in life, if we blink something will pass us by. This year it was summer, it was hot, wet and as usual too short. As a club we had many events for you to participate in. Including getting together at the largest outdoor car show in the country “Back to the 50’s” on June 22-24, where Bob Lund has his own corner display. Also many of us attended the NCRS Nationals in Las Vegas on July 15-19, where the temperature was 100-105 degree’s during the day, so they judged Operations at 5:00am when it was only 95 degrees. Here’s a recap of the club events and activities during the past three months. • Board Meetings: The board met on July 12, August 2, and September 6, as meetings were held at Davanni’s in Plymouth to conduct the club business, including board member reports, old and new business. Mike Ernst became our new Regional Director replacing Bill Braun. The Board Members divide-up the membership list and call each club member to determine the level of judging their cars had been done and their interest in having their cars judged. The results were presented at the September meeting. Work on the club’s 2020 Regional is ongoing. No club members joined us during these meetings, but are always welcome. • Technical Sessions: On July 21, Paul Burski had his solid lifters adjusted, replaced his fuel sending unit and once again demonstrated the Windshield Washer test fixture on his 1962 Corvette. No Tech. Session was held in August due to our Judging Event. On September 22, Andy Piazza had his convertible top frame installed on his 1964 Corvette. Bob also conducted a Safety Seminar on several club cars. • Social Activities: On July 28, eleven members attended the Hastings Cruise-in in downtown Hastings. On September 29, several club members attended the Fall Color Run at the St Croix Casino in Danbury Wis. We continue to look for suggestions from our club members on how to improve our club events and increase membership participation. Please feel free to contact me with your ideas. - Alden Miles, North Central NCRS Chairman 612-387-2869 / armiles1226@yahoo.com

Chapter Happenings July Tech Session at Paul Burski’s I hosted a tech session on Saturday, July 21st,at my home in Lakeville. I had three items I wanted to review with the other North Central NCRS members. 1. I needed to change my sending unit from my gas tank in my 62. The car would run out of gas when the gage was still showing a ¼ tank of gas left. Once I filled the tank with gas, the gage wouldn’t move for the first 100 miles of driving. Once the needle started to move, the gage would go from full to only ¼ of a tank in the next 100 miles. The inaccurate gas gage actually caused me run out of fuel a few times. 2. The second subject we wanted to address was how to adjust the valve lash on a solid lifter car. One of our members had been asking how to adjust the lifters for the past few years. Since, my car has a 097 Duntov solid lifter cam, I decided this was a good time to review the steps needed to adjust solid lifters. 3. The third item we wanted to address was to troubleshoot Kevin Sullivan’s windshield washer system on this 61 Corvette. The night before the tech session, I opened the convertible top and tied the back of the top to the windshield frame by the visors to keep the top out of the way. I then removed the fiberglass cover from behind the seats that covers the top on the gas tank. Once the cover was removed, we had easy access to the fuel vent lines, electrical connections and the bolts that hold the sending unit in the gas tank. I had filled up four smaller gas cans with non-oxy fuel so we could add gas to the car once we had the sending unit installed to test the accuracy of the gage. During the tech session, we disconnected the wires going to the sending unit and connected them to the new sending unit. We wanted to test the new unit before removing the old unit from the fuel tank. At first, we had some issues trying to get the new unit to work with the fuel gage. Continued on next page

Chapter Happenings After a few possible trouble shooting suggestions from some of the members, we found a better ground connection and were finally able to get the new sending unit to work properly with the gage. Once we determined the new sending unit was working properly, we decided to remove the old sending unit from the tank. First, we removed the nuts and removed the sending unit from the tank and replaced it with a new sending unit and gasket with the new unit I purchased from Corvette Central. We then reconnected the wiring and vent lines. After checking for any leaks, we slowly added each can of gas and watched the gage to insure it was working properly. The gage and sending unit are now working properly. I’m happy to report I can finally drive the car and trust the gas gage. I wish I would have fixed this issue years ago. After fixing the gas gage and sending unit, we went through the steps on how to adjust the lifters on a car with a solid lifter cam. I had removed the passenger side valve cover and hitched up a remote starter switch to the car. This “bump switch” allowed me to slowly turn the engine over in order to get the valves in the proper position in order to adjust them. After checking a few lifters, we discovered that all of my valves were already properly adjusted. I had the engine on the dyno at Competition Engine a few years ago and really haven’t put many miles on the car since that time. We reviewed the step-by-step procedures on how to adjust the valves and step the proper lash. The last item we tackled was to troubleshoot the windshield wiper system on Kevin Sullivan’s 61 roadster. Kevin had sent out all of this wiper components and had them rebuilt and tested. When he installed the system in his car, it still didn’t work. He has been working on this issue with his wiper washer for the past 10 years. He thought that his issues could possibly be attributed to aftermarket hose kits supplied by various manufacturers. My father, Harv, had put together a test bench with an industrial vacuum pump that was connected to some original washer pump, reservoir, windshield wiper motor and dash switch. He was able to get his test bench working using components from multiple cars. We used this test bench to check out each components from Kevin’s car to see which component was not working properly. We found a few issues with the hose connections underneath the dash and has able to correct them. We also discovered an issue with his Controller from his car. It wasn’t holding vacuum properly. The Controller is mounted to the top of the wiper motor underneath the hood. The purpose of the Controller is to automatically cycle the wipers a few times when the washer pump is activated. Because of the Controller didn’t hold vacuum, it didn’t allow the wiper motor to cycle properly. After the tech session, Kevin purchased a used Controller online that held vacuum and he was able to finally get his system to work properly.

Chapter Happenings After the tech session, Harv tried to pull apart a couple of old controllers and found out if you try to disassemble them you will break off the pot metal tabs that hold the backing plate on the unit. He also tried to spray the controller with different lubricates to help moisten the seals so they would hold vacuum. He tried some silicone spray and found out it actually melts the old rubber diaphragm PLEASE DON’T Spray any old rubber parts with SILIONE, it will dissolve them! The wiper test bench will be returning to Duluth with Harv after our September tech session. If you have any questions regarding windshield wiper/washer systems, please give Harv a call. - Paul Burski, North Central NCRS Vice Chairman

Brake Fluid

Solving My Brake Fluid Leaks

Just having finished a multi-year restoration of a 1967 Corvette, I’ve been spending time taking the car on short break-in drives searching for any drivability issues, and I’ve found a few. Most have been relatively easy to deal with however one has given me fits for the past six months. The brake system has had multiple leaks. Some coming from the thread area of bleeder valves, some coming from the calipers, and some coming from the line fittings at the calipers. My 1967 is a power brake car with stainless steel brake lines. When filling the brake system with brake fluid I used Silicone DOT-5 brake fluid. After tightening and then replacing many bleeder valves, tightening line connections until I thought I’d snap the connections, and rebuilding and replacing several calipers with the leaks continuing, I decided I needed to do some research. So onto the web I went. Now if you want to have a spirited discussion with a Corvette enthusiast just ask their opinion of what type of brake fluid is best in older Corvettes. Let me also add that when it comes to brake fluid I am probably the exception to the rule, at least for now. Before I share my very unscientific research, are a few basic facts about the different brake fluids that I’m sure most of you know already, however which was all new information to me. There are currently four different types of brake fluid: DOT-3, DOT-4, DOT-5, and DOT-5.1. The Department of Transportation measures the boiling point of brake fluids either dry (meaning no water absorbed), and wet, meaning (3% to 4% water absorbed). DOT-5.1 is used for ABS brake systems and thus I didn’t do much research on it. Here are some basic facts on the other three types. DOT-3 Is a glycol based brake fluid. It is bad for paint, and is hydroscopic, meaning is absorbs water easily. Its’ wet boiling point is 284F degrees. DOT-4 Similar to DOT-3 it is a glycol based brake fluid. It is also bad for paint and very corrosive. Additives have been added to increase its’ wet boiling point to 311F degrees. It is also hydroscopic and while it has a higher boiling point it has the ability to absorb water at a slightly faster rate than DOT-3. DOT-5 DOT-5 is a silicone based brake fluid. Don’t confuse silicone with synthetic, as most bottles of DOT-3 and DOT-4 say synthetic. DOT-5 does not absorb water, and water does not mix with this brake fluid. It does not harm paint. Its’ wet boiling point is 356F degrees. However spilling any around your garage and then doing some painting might cause fish eyes in your paint surface. It is slipperier that DOT-3 and DOT-4 and can be prone to more leaks. Two of the largest Corvette caliper suppliers/rebuilders will not warranty their calipers if silicone DOT-5 brake fluid is used. My research was not scientific, however I came away with the following key points I’ll share. 1.) While DOT-3 and DOT-4 absorb water, the water spreads throughout the fluid and thus is less likely to cause corrosion and rusting is the brake system. 2.) Because DOT-5 does not absorb water any water that gets into the system, and it will over time, can form water droplets in high humidity environments. These droplets can lodge in the calipers and low spots in the system and cause corrosion and rusting. Water droplets can also be caused by not bleeding the system properly or not having a clean system to start with. 3.) DOT-5 has more compressibility and thus can cause a spongy brake pedal. Most people on the forums said as soon as they switched to DOT-3 or DOT-4 the pedal became rock hard. 4.) DOT-5 can swell and deform rubber seals. I watched a video where rubber seals were submerged in DOT-3 and DOT-5. The DOT-3 seals did not change in shape or size, while the seals submerged in DOT-5 swelled up and became deformed. 5.) While extremely rare it was reported a few times that using DOT-5 in cars with power brake boosters can subject the engine to damage. If DOT-5 brake fluid got by the check valve and into the intake manifold once the liquid is burned up what’s left is silica (sand) and can cause all kinds of engine issues. The following is a picture of the lip seals that we took out of one of my calipers. Note the enlarged seal in the upper right seal in the picture. >>>>>>>>>>>>> 6.) Many Corvette owners swear by DOT-5 and have had no issues, and this is not an article to promote one type of brake fluid over another. People suspect that the brake fluid leak issues with DOT-5 seem to have started about two or three years ago. The suspicion is that the formulas changed in DOT-5 or the composition of the rubber in the seals has changed or both. Many of these fluids and seals are made outside the United States and seem to be of lesser quality than American made parts. Many Corvette owners with brake systems using DOT-5 that have been in their systems two or three years or more report no problems. However caution should be used when selecting seals and fluids if something in the systems needs replacing in the future. 7.) If you are using DOT-3 or DOT-4 when you check or fill your master cylinder, do it quickly and get the cover back on the master cylinder right away. Water absorption will occur with even short amounts of exposure to air. A comment about caliper seals. Most people on the web forums seems to favor O-ring seals. They say they are better for cars that sit idle over the winter or are not driven much during the summer. If you use lip seals and store your car over the winter they recommend you pump the brake pedal a few times every few weeks during the off season. They say this helps prevent leaks. After all my web searching I decided to flush the DOT-5 and put in DOT-3. It took three complete flushes to get all the DOT-5 out of the system, but after putting in the DOT-3 I don’t have any more leaks. I’ve got my fingers crossed. As I said earlier, this is not an article to promote one type of brake fluid over another. I just wanted to share the steps I took to solve my brake fluid leak issues with others in hopes it helps someone else. By Roger CarlsonSeptember

Brake Fluid

Pros of Dot 5 Brake Fluid

There are a few members, including myself that have used Dot 5 (Silicone fluid) in our Corvettes for many years, with no problems. Silicone fluid does not attack the paint and has other positive properties for use in collectible automobiles. Part of the problem seems to have surfaced recently with Lonestar and other caliper sellers due to their use of O-rings that are different from their past O-rings. This subject has been bought up on the NCRS Tech Board, at length, with views from both sides. The original piston design for the Corvette calipers were flawed. The spring in the piston allowed the piston to jam or come out cock eyed at some point down the road. Once this happed the caliper leaked. To solve this situation, some took out the original pistons with springs; and added solid pistons without springs from a company called Precision Engineering out of Florida (https://www.fixvetteparts.com) This company was started by two NCRS members. Myself and others have had no leak problems after we installed these new pistons Our cars have sat for long periods on end with no leaks - with silicone fluid. The kit that one buys from Precision Engineering is called the “Do It Yourself O-Ring Caliper Kit for $149.00. By Mark Swanson

Member of the Month

July - Terry Serres

The North Central NCRS Member of the Month for July of 2018 is Terry Serres. He has been married to his wife Marlene for 39 years and they have two grown children, Josh and Jessica. Corvette(s): 1961 = Jewel blue with white coves and a blue interior. It is a 245 hp hard top only car. He did a complete restoration of the car back in 2000. The car has won 4 NCRS Top Flights and the PV award. He also have 2 Bloomington Gold awards, many Gold spinner awards and Triple Crown award. He received the Duntov award with the car back in 2014. 1981 = Black with a red interior. Base engine with a 4 speed. Very original car with 47,000 miles on it.

1994 = Black with a black interior. This is hisdaily driver with 39,000 miles on it. History of your Corvette(s): He has always been a “car guy”. His father got him and his bothers into cars. His father had a 1940 ford business man coupe that they used drag race in the late 60’s and early 70’s. His father held the track record for F-gas at Rock Falls Raceway in the early 70’s. They still have the car today.

Some of his best memories of his father were when he and his brother helped him restore his 1957 XK-140 Jaguar. Terry got into corvettes with his twin brother at age 18. He purchased a 1963 split window and they restored the car together. It was a Daytona blue with a blue interior car with the 340 hp engine. From then on Terry has restored many corvettes and other cars with his brother. They both have 1961 Jewel blue corvettes that they restored together. They also restored a 1965 GTO convertible together that scored 99% at the GTO Nationals in Denver. Other cars Terry has owned are an Original 1940 Ford Business man coupe, 1969 Camaro that he did a complete restoration on. What is your next project? Next project is working with his brother on his 1965 GTO. This is a all original Minnesota car that they are doing a complete nut and bolt restoration on. Plan is to have this project done next year. North Central Chapter: He joined the NCRS back in 1996 and the chapter back in the late 1990’s. He really enjoys the judging sessions and would like to do more of the tech sessions.

August - Vernon Petersen Vernon has three children, Jeremy, Nicholas & Elanor

Corvette(s): I have a 1957 with the original 283 ci engine. Single 4-barrel, off the line 220 hp, after rebuild 240 hp on the engine dyno. I purchased the car from NCRS member Dallas Haag (his member number is in the 200s!) in Kent, Washington. Body off restoration done by Nick and Laura Tidrick in Cambridge, MN. I have a soft-top as well as hardtop for the car. I also have a 1970 Convertible that also has a vinyl hardtop. This car was a 350 ci / 350 hp car originally. The first owner of the car had an engine failure under warranty and had the dealer install an LT1 engine as a replacement. However, he didn’t want to put the LT1 hood on the car to accommodate the high-rise intake manifold. So they put the intake and carb from the original engine on the LT1 block. The 2nd owner of the car still had the high-rise intake manifold and sent it to me when I bought the car. When we did the body-off restoration on this car I put on the LT1 hood. This engine, after the rebuild put out 375 hp on the engine dyno. We used a roller cam (didn’t want to deal with the solid lifters), bored .30 over, and electronic ignition. The car

is the original color, Donnybrook Green, but I changed the interior from green cloth (green outside and inside was a little too much green for me) to leather in the Saddle color. Nick and Laura did the restoration on this car too. This car came out of Wichita Falls Texas, so the frame was perfect, no rust at all. The car had not been driven since 1988. History of your Corvette(s): I purchased the 1957 in April of 2008, the restoration took about 5 years to complete. I bought the 1970 in January 2013 and it took about 14 months to restore. Both engines were rebuilt by Jeff Wheeler of Wheeler Dyno. Steve Johnson (a local chapter member) did the transmissions and differentials on both cars.

My wife Melissa and I have a 4 year old daughter named June. We also own a 64 Daytona Blue roadster with black and white interior. We bought it in 2012 and have been steadily working on it since. Major projects left include convertible top restoration, plenty of bodywork, frame restoration, disc brake conversion, installing the correct transmission and several others that are escaping me at the moment. It’s always been in driving condition the whole time we’ve owned it. I’ve always liked C2 Corvettes and had a friend who owned a 63 split window and would let me drive it from time to time which got me hooked.

What is your next Corvette project?

I don’t remember exactly when I joined but I think I’m coming up on 2 or 3 years so I’m probably still considered a rookie. I like tech sessions and judging events because that is where I can learn the most about the cars and how they are supposed to be configured since mine has been lightly abused and modified in it’s life.

These cars are my second and third Corvettes. My first car was a 1967 convertible that I bought when I was 18. I would love to find this car again and have the opportunity to reclaim it! North Central Chapter: I joined the local and national chapters when I bought the ’57, which would mean I joined in 2008. I enjoy the tech sessions and shows. I’ve only been to a couple though, and I have not been able to attend any of the cruises. I travel a lot for a living and that means little home time that I choose to spend away from my kids. I would especially like to join in the fall color run.

Jerome made a motion and Chris seconded to add $120 to make the donation an even $500. Motion carried. Alden completed the survey review we conducted by phone with members and mentioned highlights. The summary was then sent to board members. Window decals and business cards were discussed and Chris will supply artwork for Paul to acquire cling type decals for windows and generic business cards. The NCRS Nationals Judging Office is planning on a National Judging Retreat in 2019. The retreat is usually held in Dallas, TX. This event is something that is held only every few years. The purpose of the event is a two day, intensive session on teaching the mechanics of flight judging. The first day is spent in the classroom, covering a variety of topics. The second day is spent out on the judging field, practicing what was just taught. If another one of these sessions is made available in the coming years, and you are interested in increasing your judging knowledge, I highly recommend attending. During the first day’s session, topics include The Judging Reference Manual, Judging 101, Paint, and The Matrix Judging System. The second day, we spent hours pouring over a variety of cars. Here are a number of pictures showing the indoor judging field from one of the past events. These cars were not competing for actual awards. Rather, their owners had graciously brought them in for the students to review and practice. As you can see by the following pictures, each of the four generations of Corvettes eligible for judging were well represented. A fair number of the cars there had achieved the Duntov Mark of Excellence award, while others had achieved the Bowtie award. Regardless, they were all spectacular. My favorite of the show was a Daytona Blue 1964 Fuel Injected coupe. It has less than 40,000 original miles, original paint, engine bay, chassis, etc and had won practically every award in the book. NCRS Top Flight, PV, Duntov, Bowtie, Bloomington Gold, Bloomington Survivor, and Bloomington Benchmark. That was a fun car to check out. I have it pictured down below, along with a shot of its unmolested engine bay. As many of you are award, whenever you attend a Judging School or a Judging Meet, you gain points towards the next level in the Judging Recognition Program. This retreat nets you 20 points. That’s 1/5th of the way to Master Judge! They don’t offer the event every year, but when they do, I think it is a great amount of experience for any one of our Chapter members. If you have any questions about the retreat or any other aspect of getting involved in the judging process with our Chapter, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Deadlines for articles and advertising are: March 1, June 1, September 1 and December 1 of each year. The NCRS Judging Process The NCRS has compiled and is constantly updating highly detailed judging standards and rules for each basic model division from 1953 through 1999. The guidelines in these NCRS Technical Information Manuals are recognized throughout the hobby as THE STANDARD in determining originality. The judging system is designed to educate each owner about their car as well as providing recognition for excellence in the areas of restoration, performance, or preservation. It is not a “cleanliness contest” like other events, nor do you compete against your friends’ Corvettes. Judging is not done by some secret group of “experts”. You can learn to judge, or you can have your Corvette evaluated by other NCRS members. 10,516 members are currently recognized for their judging expertise. They have created 27,871 NCRS judging records through NCRS events internationally to date. New Item Added NCRS has recently announced the addition of an Award Confirmation Document Service. This service will provide a confirmation document with a complete listing from the NCRS database of the available award statistics for a specific Corvette. The presence of this confirmation document will assure the owner of the NCRS judging history on a Corvette.

MAKING JUDGING SHEET REFERENCES BASED ON THE C-D-C-I-F As the NCRS judging system is based on 5 different descriptions for ORIGINALITY, with each having a value of 20%, it is most helpful to the owner, that we use the same descriptions for the comments on the sheets, when we judge their cars. C = CONFIGURATION D = DATE C = COMPLETENESS I = INSTALLATION F = FINISH The use of words like “Service Replacement”, “Reproduction” or “Restoration” are very little to no help to the owner, since they do not describe WHAT the difference to original is. Since we judge the APPEARANCE of ORIGINALITY, we do not care where the particular judged part comes from (Original GM, Restoration Parts House or Neighbors Shed). BAD WORDS:

INSTEAD USE:

“Wrong”

“Not Typical”

“Incorrect”

“Not Typical”

Certain parts, which do not reflect any Originality based on the CDCIF (Full Deduction) are not listed on our Standard Deduction Sheet. Such parts may be described as: SIGNIFICANTLY DISSIMILAR. A good example is the typical parts-house (AutoZone, O’Riley etc.) Cooling Fan Clutch. Judging Example: One of the most often “non-original” parts encountered on the chassis are the shock absorbers. They are a single line item and have a value of 5 points. Based on the CDCIF we can make the following determination: Configuration: Check nuances on the shock absorber body (may be different print, “Made in Mexico” etc.) Date: Check for presence of date. (Not necessary, if a non-typical configuration has been detected) Completeness: Are any factions missing?? Installation: Are the bolts, washers at their intended places and orientation (or reversed)?? Finish: Is the shock painted in a typical finish (lower bushings free of paint etc)?? Conclusion: A shock absorber with “Made In Mexico,” finished and installed in a typical manner would differ in the Configuration (1 Point) as well as the Date (1 point) since we know that a shock with such configuration was manufactured later than the car. Total deduction would be 2 points. OUR COMMENTS ON THE SHEET WOULD BE: Configuration (No Pliacell Script / Delco Part Number), Date Provided by Marco Hartner 25
