State of The Chapter To live in the mid-west it takes a special kind of person. After living through a winter that seemed like it would never end. Along came mid-April with three days of snow totaling over 20 inches, but by the end of May we had our first 100 degree day ever in May. Now it’s June and there is no reason not to get our Corvette’s out of the garage and drive them down the road at least around all the road construction.

Here’s a recap of the club events and activities during the past three months.

• Board Meetings: The board met on April 5, May 3, and canceled the June 7, meeting at Davanni’s in Woodbury to conduct the club business, including board member reports, old and new business. Paul B. reported on the Members Survey that was conducted in January at the April meeting. It was agreed that the Board Members would divide-up the membership list and call each club member to determine the level of judging their cars had been done and their interest in having their cars judged. Additional questions were also asked, results were discussed at the May meeting and tabulated results will be presented at the July meeting. Several club members joined us during the meetings and are always welcome.

• Technical Sessions: On April 14, Bob Lund had his 1965 Corvette aligned at Twin City Tire. On May 19, Alden Miles had his wife’s 1958 Corvette dash pad installed and Paul Burski demonstrated the Windshield Washer test fixture that his father Harv built. On June 9, Allan Loosebrock had his 1963 Split Window body removed from the chassis at his house.

• Social Activities: On April 21, seventeen members attended the Spring Social at Cowboy Jack’s in Woodbury. On June 22-24, several club members attended Back to the 50’s and I think everyone enjoyed the weather and the 12,000+ cars.

We continue to look for suggestions from our club members on how to improve our club events and increase membership participation. I would like to see new faces and I would like to do new things that are of interest to our club members, but that’s up to you the membership. Let’s make 2018 the best year ever!!!

North Central Chapter to Host 2020 REGIONAL Regional Judging Event – Rochester, Minnesota – June 11-13, 2020 As you have probably heard by now, the North Central Chapter is hosting one of the six Regional Judging Events in 2020. The event is set for Thursday-Saturday, June 11-13, 2020 in Rochester, Minnesota. If you are interested in seeing some great Corvettes, learning more about the NCRS Flight Judging system, and meeting people from around the country, we would love to have to come to Rochester! The event starts on Thursday with the event check in and Operations Judging. The cars then proceed inside the Graham Center Arena. The evening wraps up with a 1 point Judging School put on by the National Judging Chairman, David Brigham and a Welcome Reception. Friday will see a full day of Flight Judging and a 3 point Advanced Judging School.

Saturday will see the remainder of Flight Judging and a second 3 point Advanced Judging School. Saturday evening is the awards banquet and we’re done!

Here are the different ways you can participate at the Regional.

• Increase your judging knowledge by attending three different judging schools (receive a maximum of 7 judging points • Participate as an Observer Judge and assess some really great Corvettes as they go through the judging process • Volunteer to be a tabulator • Volunteer for tasks that need doing to help the Regional be the best event it can be • Bring your car down and have it judged • Drive your car down and enjoy the event If you have any questions at all, please reach out to me. Paragon Rewards Program continues in 2018 The North Central Chapter’s financial award for products purchased during 2017 was $390.00. The chapter decided to get thirteen $30.00 gift certificates to be used as door prizes, raffle prizes, etc. at upcoming 2018 chapter events such as tech sessions, judging meets, and social functions.

The chapter currently has 30 members participating in the Rewards Program. We owe a great big thank you to these 30 members for purchasing Corvette parts from Paragon Corvette. Membership Update Welcome to summer!! I just attended the “Back to the Fifties” weekend at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. If you are not familiar with this Current Members event, you can see 12,000 vehicles dating from 1964 and earlier across the entire site. There are no 1964 ½ Mustangs allowed. I saw several chapter members and had a nice time visiting with them. If you have not attended this event, I would highly recommend going at least once. It was surprising how many Corvettes were there; the numbers seem to grow every year.

Getting down to business, we have five new members who have joined our chapter this quarter, bringing our membership up to 126.

Douglas Anderson lives in Foxboro, Wisconsin and he owns a ’69 Corvette. Doug had his car judged at our spring judging meet and earned a Second Flight Award. This was a very respectable showing for his first time out.

Reese Burnett resides in Woodbury, Minnesota and he has a ’66 Convertible with the 300hp motor. He found out about us through the Corvette Forum. Reese came to our chapter meet to see how the judging process works.

John Prebarich hails from Eden Prairie, Minnesota and is the proud owner of both 1960 and 2017 Corvettes.

Clyde Kerner lives in Dickinson, North Dakota and joins our growing contingent of N.D. members. Clyde signed up for our chapter through the NCRS website.

Michael Holmquist resides in Blaine, Minnesota. Mike also joined our chapter through the NCRS website. He owns a ’58 with the 283 ci, 270 hp motor. Mike is looking forward to slowly bringing it back to as close to original as practical.

Formed in 1974, the National Corvette Restorers Society is a non-profit hobby group of 15,800+ families dedicated to the restoration, preservation, history and enjoyment of Corvettes.

Founded in 1988 the North Central Chapter is chartered by the NCRS National to support and organize Corvette hobby activities in the Upper Midwest to further the NCRS National philosophy of preservation and restoration of Corvettes.

NCRS Judging is recognized around the world as THE STANDARD in determining originality.

The Judging System is designed to educate each owner about their car as well as providing recognition for excellence in the areas of restoration, performance, or preservation. You can learn to judge through participation. Start out as an observer judge and work your way to Master Judge through the Judges Recognition Program.

JUDGE NCRS Judges are volunteer members who offer their time and knowledge to Judge Members Cars under the guidance of the NCRS Technical Information Manual & Judging Guide.

Master Judge NCRS Master Judges are volunteer members who have been recognized by the organization and membership for accumulating a minimum of 100 points in our judging recognition program by Judging at events, attending Judging Schools at Chapter Meets, Regional Meets and National Meets. Many have also attended National or Regional Judging Seminars that last for one or two days of intensive instruction and hands on participation.

Tech Session - April - Alignment at Twin Cities Tire On Saturday, April 14th, in a snowstorm, we held our monthly Tech Session at Twin Cities Tire in Bloomington. We aligned a beautiful RED 1964 Corvette. Coffee and Donuts were served and enjoy by members of all ages. The session ended with give-a-ways to the members present.

Tips - Wiper Washer I had a discussion with Kevin Sullivan, one of our fellow North Central NCRS members, regarding the windshield wiper washer systems on C1 Corvettes. He asked me if I had windshield wiper washers on my car and if they worked. I told him I had the components for my car, but didn’t have them hooked up and working. Kevin told me he had sent out all of this wiper components and had them rebuilt and tested. When he installed the system in his car and it still didn’t work, he thought that his issues could possibly be attributed to after-market hose kits supplied by various manufacturers.

The next time I talked with my father, Harv Burski, I mentioned this discussion with him and he decided to look into this. He has always loved tinkering with “projects” in this garage. He put together a test bench to check out individual components in the system to see which one wasn’t working properly. He asked me to locate the wiper reservoir and pump assembly for my car so he could test it. I looked in all of my boxes of parts in my garage and basement and couldn’t find these parts. Finally, I checked under the hood of my car under the master cylinder on the inner wheel well where the parts should be mounted and finally found my parts! I was very surprised to find the parts where they belong….I normally don’t put things away where they should be! HA HA Harv started to research information about the Trico windshield wiper system and was able to talk to a guy in Kansas at McVey Cadillac who rebuilds the same system for old Cadillac’s and Lincoln’s. This guy told Harv that the older pumps can be fixed if they only need new seals. If the plastic pump housing is broken, it can’t be repaired.

Harv put together a test bench with an industrial vacuum pump that was connected to an original washer pump, reservoir, windshield wiper motor and dash switch. He was able to get his test bench working using components from multiple cars. At first, he had issues with the pump not working until he realized he needed to have a washer nozzle connected in order to get the proper back pressure to get the wipers to turn on and off twice with the washer cycle.

Harv showed this test fixture at our May tech session at Alden Mile’s garage. He explained to everyone how the system works and what to look for when testing out components.

I currently have the test bench at my house in Lakeville and I’m planning to have Kevin bring his car down so we can trouble shoot his system. I have been contacted by another club member about testing out his system. If you have a C1 and are having issues with your system, please get in touch with me and we can work together to trouble shoot your issues.

What Makes us NCRS

NCRS Members benefit from mountains of technical information that they can rely on. When you join the NCRS, you access the combined knowledge of thousands of previous members. A group of 19 Technical Advisors, who are recognized as the authorities in their fields, are also just a letter or e-mail away. Whatever problems that you might run into has been solved in past years by other NCRS members.

At the chapter level we are always looking for Tech Session ideas. This is NOT the chapter coming to work on your Corvette. It is the chapter coming to HELP YOU work on your Corvette as you learn more about your piece of American History. April - Jim Fenske

The 1962 was finally completed and in 2004 earned a very high Top Flight award at our regional event in Rochester.

I have been a car person since I was a young kid and saw a new 1954 Corvette in the small Minnesota town where I grew up. Fast forward to age 16 when I convinced my dad to allow me to buy a somewhat used but driving 1950 Ford convertible for a whopping $87. It would be a while before I could afford a Corvette. The Ford was my transportation for the next four years of high school and college. In 1967 I purchased my first Corvette, a 1965 big block roadster and a year later I traded it in on a new 1968 small block roadster at Jay Kline Chevrolet in Minneapolis. This car had an interesting history, as it was loaned to Rod Carew, the Minnesota Twins Hall of Fame player, in exchange for commercials Mr. Carew did for the dealership. I subsequently sold the 1968 a year later. I didn’t own another Corvette until April 1974 when I purchased a 1962 that I still have today.

As I continue my narrative, it will be become apparent that a large portion involves the NCRS and North Center Chapter (NCC). I joined NCRS National in December 1976. The NCC initial organizational meeting was held February 1986.

It was organized by Deanne Parker, a military person, and held at the Fort Snelling officer’s club. Twelve people including myself attended. By the summer of 1987 over 50 members had joined. In 1988 chairman Deanne Parker’s military status resulted in a transfer to another state. As a result, leadership waned and opposing Minnesota versus Wisconsin factions arose and the chapter went into inactive status. With the efforts of Dale Crosby, including myself and others, the chapter was reorganized late 1989 and has been healthy with a growing membership ever since. I was a board member at the start of the chapter reorganization and continued as a board member through 2014 serving as membership director, technical director, judging chairman, vice president and president at various times. My involvement with the NCRS has been very rewarding and I gained many new friends.

May - Bob & Cyrena Schroeder

The North Central NCRS Member of the Month for May of 2018 is Bob & Cyrena Schroeder. They own a 1971 Corvette, matching numbers LS5 (454/365hp), M-21 4speed, Steel Cities Gray (code 988) Coupe with Black Vinyl Interior (code 400).

The ’62 was a driving car with original motor/drivetrain but a red metal flake paint job, thrush side exhausts and slot mags. In 1976 marriage and family life took over, so the Corvette was put in storage. The marriage ended in the late 80’s and in 1992 I decided to embark on a full body off restoration. The car was totally disassembled, and the slow restoration continued for more than 10 years. However, during this same time period, I totally restored a 1970 big block air roadster that earned a Top flight at our regional.

The car was built on May 5, 1971, so she turns 47 this month. It came with Power Steering, Power Brakes, Tilt & Telescopic Steering Column and Delco AM-FM Stereo.

The Vette has earned NCRS Top Flight Regional – 2016, NCRS Top Flight Chapter – 2015, Bloomington Gold – 2015, Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals Triple Diamond – 2015, Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals Concours Gold – 2015 and was on display at the 2017 World of Wheels.

Member of the Month longer than I anticipated due to an unscrupulous body shop owner.

After completion of the body off restoration, I entered my 63’ in the Bloomington Gold Certification judging on June 22, 2012 and was awarded the Bloomington Gold Certificate. On August 17, 2013, I entered my 63’ in the NCRS North Central Chapter judging meet at Long Lake, Minnesota and was awarded the Top Flight Award. I was convinced by friends in our Chippewa Valley Corvette club to enter my 63’ in the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals in Chicago on November 23, 2014. I was honored to be awarded the Concours Gold Certificate and the Triple Diamond Certification.

In 1980 I purchased my next Corvette, a 1967 coupe from a good friend Jeff Follendorf who sadly passed away last summer. The car is equipped with a non-original 400 hp. Tri-Power 427 ci engine, close ratio 4-speed transmission; positraction rear axle with 3:70 gears; AM-FM radio; side mounted exhaust system; power steering; power windows; tinted glass all round; Elkhart Blue exterior and Teal Blue interior.

Bob purchased the car at the Mecum Kissimmee Auction – Jan 2012. It was restored by Kiss’ Classic Cars. He always loved Corvettes, but never thought of owning one until 2012. His dream car is a 1969 Corvette Convertible – 427 Triple Black. Bob joined the North Central Chapter in 2013 and enjoys the car cruises.

In 1997 I purchased my 3rd Corvette from my good friend Rocky Heike. The car is a 1986 Official Indy Pace Car convertible equipped with the 235 hp (aluminum cylinder heads) 350 ci engine; 4-speed automatic transmission; power steering; power brakes; power windows; AM-FM stereo cassette; leather seats; with Black exterior and Graphite interior.

I purchased my 4th Corvette in January 2018, a 2017 Grand Sport Coupe equipped with the 460 hp LT1 376 ci engine. The car has the 8-spd paddle shift automatic transmission, performance data video recorder with navigation; AM-FM stereo radio; remote start; keyless entry and transparent removable roof panel; carbon fiber ground effects and battery protection package. The car exterior color is Torch Red with the Jet Black color interior.

June - Larry Schaefer The North Central NCRS Member of the Month for June of 2018 is Larry Schaefer. Larry and his wife Cindy Komornick have been together for 11 years. Cindy has 2 grown daughters Christine and Cathy from her previous marriage and I have 1 grown daughter, April. Between us, we have 5 grandchildren and we love grand-parenting.

Corvettes: In 1973 I bought my first Corvette, a 1963 Split Window Coupe from Southworth Chevrolet in Bloomer, Wis. The car is equipped with a 300 hp. 327 ci engine; 4-speed transmission; positraction rear axle with 3:23 gears; AM-FM radio; a silver blue metallic exterior and navy blue interior. It is an all matching numbers car. In 1999 I began a body off restoration that took much

My Next Project with my Corvettes: I plan to replace all of the weather stripping for my ’67 Vette. I would also like to restore the side mounted exhaust panels on my ’67 if time permits. I would also like to have both rear bumpers re-chromed on the ’67.

North Central Chapter: I joined the Chapter in August of 2013 after participating in the Chapter’s Judging event at Long Lake, Minn.

I found that all the Chapter members I came in contact with at the meet were very helpful and friendly. I look forward to trying to attend some of the Chapter events in the future. The events I find most interesting are the tech sessions and judging events.

President’s Report Alden updated us on World of Wheels show March 23-25. The club cars received four 1st Place Awards and a $100 Club Display Award.

Questionnaire form presented to Board to be used to call members and sheets were passed out to Board members. Chris will check on National NCRS info available.

Vice President’s Report Paul presented list of Corvette Car Shows that we might want to participate. Will add more that were brought up.

Paul went over the Tech Survey results.

Treasurer’s Report.

All going well, not much to report.

Judging Report Chris mentioned the upcoming Judging Meet to occur May 12 at Gilbys Street Dept, 580 South Wasson Lane, River Falls,WI is live.

Six judges signed up, but we need more. Four midyear cars signed up and one Sportsman.

We were approved for a Regional in 2020 which will be held in Rochester June 11-13, 2020.

Membership Report We will have 121 members with the addition of Jeff Norton and Ken Gerebi. Mailed the 1st Qtr report for Chapter Top Flight Award.

Tech Report Good Tech Session at Galindo’s with some kids there. April 14 alignment at Twin Cities Tire with us providing donuts, OJ and bananas. Body Off on Alan’s 63 end of April, first week in May weather and temperature dependent.

Activities Report The spring event at Cowboy Jacks is on target for April 21st in Woodbury.

Website Report The website was updated with the 2020 North Central Regional Information and an event was created on Facebook.

Newsletter Report The “Crossed Flags” newsletter was completed and emailed out to the membership. The board was thanked for their input and edits on the January-March edition. It was asked if more tech articles could be added to the Newsletter. The membership is encouraged to send in write ups on their experiences, tech tips, general knowledge or fun facts they would like to share. Please email Nick Kornder (Kornder@northernsun.org) with articles and photos.

Member-at-Large Report Jim Fenske will be the April Member of the Month.

Old Business The suggestion from Roger on a Fund Raiser whereby Certificates from vendors could be acquired and raffled off, thus getting all the members, regardless of geography the chance to participate was again discussed. Jerome will check with National to see if there would be any concerns.

Alden mentioned that he was contacted by Doug Anderson from Duluth to add his 69 to the judging at Gilby’s.

Specifically- The suggestion from Roger on a Fund Raiser whereby Certificates from vendors could be acquired and raffled off, thus getting all the members, regardless of geography the chance to participate was again discussed. Jerome will check with National to see if there would be any concerns. Jeanne Cloutier mentioned that raffles are not new at Regionals. Alden made a motion to put some work around this at the next meeting and Jerome seconded. All in favor.

Alden had asked all the board members to call 12 club members to conduct a survey. Alden collected the surveys and mentioned that people were pleased to talk and went around the room for comments.

Jeanne Cloutier said it was a pleasure to see we were having a Regional in 2020 and that it was a lot of work. Dave Cloutier suggested a pre-judging Ops to raise owners awareness of what Judging is about and how critical the Ops portion is. Dave related a story that got the board thinking. Chris suggested we might do a school and T it up with an OP’s for C1, C2 and C3 to understand the differences and to ask anyone to bring their cars to have their Ops checked. It may be beneficial to have a write up in the Newsletter on what a full Judging entails to raise awareness for all.

Mark Swanson thanked everyone for the food and camaraderie.

Membership in the North Central Chapter of the NCRS is open to all members of the NCRS National organization. Dues payable to the North Central Chapter are $25.00 per years. MAKING JUDGING SHEET REFERENCES BASED ON THE C-D-C-I-F As the NCRS judging system is based on 5 different descriptions for ORIGINALITY, with each having a value of 20%, it is most helpful to the owner, that we use the same descriptions for the comments on the sheets, when we judge their cars.

C = CONFIGURATION D = DATE C = COMPLETENESS i = INSTALLATION F = FINISH The use of words like “Service Replacement”, “Reproduction” or “Restoration” are very little to no help to the owner, since they do not describe WHAT the difference to original is.

Since we judge the APPEARANCE of ORIGINALITY, we do not care where the particular judged part comes from (Original GM, Restoration Parts House or Neighbors Shed).

Certain parts, which do not reflect any Originality based on the CDCIF (Full Deduction) are not listed on our Standard Deduction Sheet. Such parts may be described as: SiGNiFiCANtLy DiSSiMiLAR. A good example is the typical parts-house (AutoZone, O’Riley etc.) Cooling Fan Clutch.

Judging Example: One of the most often “non-original” parts encountered on the chassis are the shock absorbers. They are a single line item and have a value of 5 points. Based on the CDCIF we can make the following determination: Configuration: Check nuances on the shock absorber body (may be different print, “Made in Mexico” etc.)

Date: Check for presence of date. (Not necessary, if a non-typical configuration has been detected) Completeness: Are any factions missing??

Installation: Are the bolts, washers at their intended places and orientation (or reversed)??

Finish: Is the shock painted in a typical finish (lower bushings free of paint etc)??

Conclusion: A shock absorber with “Made In Mexico,” finished and installed in a typical manner would differ in the Configuration (1 Point) as well as the Date (1 point) since we know that a shock with such configuration was manufactured later than the car. Total deduction would be 2 points.

How do legendary Corvettes stack up against the new ZR1?

Courtesy Wesley Wren - Autoweek Magazine (Published November 13, 2017) The 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 is an impressive piece -- the 755-hp LT5 V8 might not have dual-overhead camshafts, but it still manages to make incredible power. More importantly, it’s stuffed with track-ready parts that should be more than enough to appease even the most pretentious weekend warrior. The new king Corvette made us think about a few other landmark moments in the nameplate’s history.

5. 1957 Chevrolet Corvette “Air Box” (C1) This race-ready version of Chevy’s first fuel-injected sports car was THE package to get if you planned on doing any serious competitive driving. The package, called 579E by Chevy’s internal brass, got a small performance bump from a cold-air intake system for the already fast fuel-injected 283 cubic-inch V8. The package was usually paired with the big brake package -option number 684 -- that gave a heavy-duty suspension and larger brakes.

As for power -- this is nowhere close to the latest ZR1 Corvette’s monstrous 755 hp, but for its day, the 283 hp was more than good enough to move its 2,849-pound chassis around with authority. According to Chevy, only 43 of these specially optioned ‘Vettes rolled off the assembly line, which we also expect to be usurped by the ZR1.

Chevy’s Z06 package was introduced in 1963.

The 1957 Chevy Corvette “Air Box” was the first super high-performance version of Chevy’s sports car.

4. 1963 Chevrolet Corvette (C2) Z06 Building on what Chevy learned from its not-so-subtle racing endeavors with the Corvette, it launched the Z06 package. The package included a 360-hp 327 cubic-inch V8, with the now-familiar Ramjet mechanical fuel injection, a limited-slip rear axle and a four-speed gearbox. These ‘Vettes also had a special 36.5-gallon fuel tank, opposed to the standard 20-gallon tanks, to help keep fuel in the cars when tasked with endurance races -- or extremely long trips to the grocery store.

Like the above Corvette and any Z06 that has followed, there was more than just a bump in output. The 1963 Corvette Z06 also had better brakes and a better suspension. However, as fast as the first Z06 was, it’s no match for its modern counterpart -- let alone the new ZR1.

3. 1967 Chevrolet Corvette (C2) L88 While the folks behind the Corvette’s racing development were doing good work with the small-block V8, eventually there became no replacement for displacement. Chevrolet introduced its MkIV big-block V8 to the Corvette in 1965.

Carrying the internal badge L78, the big-block ‘Vette made way for various high-performance versions -- namely, the L88. Sure, there was an even hotter version of Chevy’s big block -- the ZL1 -- but only two of those race-ready aluminum engines reportedly found a home in Corvettes. The L88, on the other hand, was a cast-iron block with lightweight aluminum heads.

Displacing a whopping 427 cubic inches, the L88 ‘Vette was rated at 430 hp, Second-generation Corvettes with big block engines would be easily identified by the “stinger” hood. but many consider that to be grossly under the engine’s actual performance.

With minor tuning adjustments and a few bolt on goodies like a set of tubular headers, the L88 could allegedly churn out 560 hp -- in 1967.

2. 1990 Chevrolet Corvette (C4) ZR-1 While not the introduction of the ZR-1 nameplate, 1990 did mark the special Corvette’s return. It also introduced Chevy’s dual-overhead camshaft LT5 V8 to the world. Introduced at the Geneva motor show, the ZR1 was Chevrolet’s step into the future -- the pushrod V8 was its flagship engine design, and the LT5’s complete lack of pushrods surprised many. The 32-valve V8 was rated at 375 hp and could carry the coupe to an astonishing 180 mph. That might not sound like a lot of oomph, considering it barely ekes out more power than the 1963 Z06, but for the time, it was blistering fast.

As we know now, thanks to time working only in one direction, the DOHC V8 wasn’t the future for Chevy’s performance endeavors -- even the rumored reintroduction in this ZR1 turned out not to be the case. However, it did show that Chevy had its eye on the future.

The 1990 Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1 introduced the DOHC LT5 V8.

1. 2009 Chevrolet Corvette (C6) ZR1 The ZR1 returned, without the hyphen, in 2009 without its DOHC engine.

Chevy did spice up the less interesting pushrod V8 by introducing a supercharger. The supercharged LS9 V8 produced an impressive 638 hp. The ZR1 also added features that we’ve seen on other various GM performance products, including the latest ZR1, like Magnetic Selective Ride Control.

The last generation ZR1 proved its worth as an ultra-high performance Corvette, but even it is overshadowed by the latest and greatest (and possibly last front engine) Corvette ZR1.

The third iteration of Chevrolet’s Corvette ZR1 introduced a supercharged V8.
