Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season. We’ve got a lot going on over the next few months, so “buckle up” – Here’s to a great 2014!

Our planning committee for the 2014 Regional meet in Rochester has met several times over the past few months. As we get closer to our May event, we’ll need additional people to help staff activities. If you’d like to be a part of this exciting event, please contact one of our committee co-chairs, Chris Enstrom or John Dockter.

One of our long-time members, Dale Crosby, has worn out his clutch knee and has had to have it replaced. What do you expect from years of driving Corvettes! He’s doing really well on his recovery; it helps to have a good nurse like Val. It’s hard to keep a good Marine down!

I’d like to personally thank our chapter board members and our many committee members for their hard work and diligence throughout this past year. We’ve got lots of talented and committed members who really take an active role in our club…and it shows!

This year is coming to a close and it is time to renew your membership dues for 2014. The chapter board has authorized the same dues renewal offer as last year. Your dues entitle you to our quarterly newsletter and many great chapter events.

Dues are $25.00 if you choose to receive the Crossed Flags newsletter via the internet or $30.00 if you prefer a hard copy mailed to you.

Claude Mosley found our chapter through the National NCRS website.

He was an earlier member of the NCRS and has rejoined after a long hiatus. Claude owns an ’89 red convertible with the white top and a blue ’96 Grand Sport coupe. He resides in La Crescent, MN. While going through some of his old NCRS paperwork, Claude found this NCRS Membership Map from Dec. 1, 1976. It shows there were 1,589 members in the NCRS. 12 in MN, 75 in WI, 1 in ND and 3 in SD. Interesting fact: We have more members in our chapter today than all four states combined back in 1976.

NCRS Classified Ads now online.

You can now buy and sell your Corvette related stuff online to other NCRS Members or to the general public. No waiting, your ad will be seen the minute you post it online. If you are looking for that one part you need you can create a filter in the NCRS Classifieds that will email you the minute anyone posts an ad meeting your filter criteria.

You can visit the Classifieds at https://www.ncrs.org/classified Parts are not all that you can sell. Sell or buy cars or parts. Sell or buy memorabilia. Sell or buy a trailer and the tow vehicle to pull it. Post a wanted ad for a particular item that you are looking for. Oh and don’t forget Tools. Got tools that you don’t need any longer.

Sell them to someone who needs them.

Standard ads are $2.50 and car ads are $5.00. Less than Ebay or just about any other classified ad site you will find.

In order to log in you may need to reset your password at https://www.ncrs.org/forums/ register/initiate.php to synchronize you password from the old functions of the site to the new Classifieds section. Enter your member number and your postal code to authenticate yourself. You don’t have to create a new password just enter your current password twice and click on Reset! Of course is wouldn’t be bad practice to change your password if it has been around awhile. Changing it here will change it throughout the site.

The users who have so far posted ads or used the site respond that it is easy to use and they are happy to have this new resource to buy and sell parts.

On November 16th our chapter had a fundraiser for the NCRS Foundation which provides scholarships to NCRS members and their families. Twenty-five members attended this event and enjoyed a delicious breakfast provided by the chapter.

Jim Fenske donated many Corvette related books to be used for a silent auction at this fundraiser and we were able to raise $277. The chapter also donated $100 for a total of $377.

The board would like to thank Jim for his generous donation and to the members who contributed to this worthwhile cause.

North Central Chapter and NCRS Judging Happy New Year to all of you! I know the Board of Directors is looking forward to a wonderful 2014 with many great activities planned and ways for the membership to get more involved in the Corvette hobby. I wanted to highlight how our Chapter continues to improve its judging prowess.

As of the writing of this, we have 116 members on the roster. Those members have accumulated a grand total of 4,289 Judging Points. That is a 6% increase from last year!! Of those, 82 members have some amount of judging points. Of those 82 members, 42 of them have also brought a car through the judging system in one way or another.

For the newest members of our Chapter, why would you want to get involved in judging? Here are a few great reasons.

Learn more about your car Starting off with the easiest section, Operations, an owner can participate as an Event Judge and learn about all of the different functions of their car and how Chevrolet intended them to work.

This part of Flight Judging is typically done outside and involves starting the car. Beyond that, all the locks are checked, as well as lights, horn radio, windows, and just about everything else that an owner could interact with on the car.

Understand the Judging Matrix The other four sections that are involved in Flight Judging are Interior, Exterior, Mechanical and Chassis. Each of these four sections looks at many parts on the car through the lens of the NCRS Matrix Judging System. Each part is looked at for both its originality and condition. The originality portion is broken down into 5 areas (Completeness, Date, Configuration, Installation and Finish). These 5 areas help the judge determine how close the part is to typical factory production, and then assign a point deduction (if warranted).

Here is an example of the Interior team checking out a 1967 Coupe. The team starts by looking at one part or group of parts in the interior. Just below the photo you can see what a typical NCRS judging score sheet looks like.

In this case, we’re looking at the first part of the interior sheet. The judges would start by looking at the Door Panels themselves and look for any deviation from the factory standard. The factory standard is spelled out in detail in the Technical Information Manual and Judging Guide.

Here is an excerpt from a judging manual that describes the operation of the Windshield Washers. One of the best ways that you can learn more about judging is participating as a judge.

You are asked to make a judgment call on how well the car being examined follows the factory standard as outlined in the Judging Guide.

I would strongly recommend for anyone interested in taking their car to a Judging Meet to get involved in Judging. You may not be able to learn every small detail about your car prior to the meet, but what you’ll learn is how the process of judging is conducted. You’ll also learn about the operations of your car, which is one of the easiest ways for a car to lose points during a judging event. And lastly, you’ll see how best to prepare your car for its first judging meet.

Meet other NCRS members with cars similar to yours No matter whether you are simply maintaining your car with oil changes, doing a complete restoration, or anything in between, there is a great wealth of knowledge in our organization about these cars. There are multiple resources for you as an owner to gain knowledge about what to do on your car. Being a judge exposes you to one facet of that knowledge base. You get to meet people who have different experiences and can help guide you in terms of what your goal is with your car.

3 North Central Chapter Judging Schools will be offered in 2014 - 1 judging point for each These will all be in the Twin Cities metro area Saturday, May 24th; Saturday, June 14th; Saturday, July 26th North Central Regional Rochester, MN May 15, 16 & 17 1 point judging school on Thursday 3 point judging schools each Friday and Saturday (if you attend both, you get 6 points) Alternatively, being an Observer Judge each Friday and Saturday would gain you 2 points each day (total of 4) 7 POINT EVENT MAXIMUM National Convention Overland Park, KS (Kansas City suburb) Variety of school topics - watch in February for the registration info on what topics will be offered Advanced Judged Schools - 5 points per day across 2 days for a total of 10 Observer Judging - 3 points per day 15 POINT EVENT MAXIMUM (no more than 10 points coming either via schools or via judging) Illinois Chapter meet Galena, IL - northwest corner of the state Usually the first Saturday in August 2 points for being a team judge, 1 point for being an observer judge North Central Chapter meet Long Lake, MN Saturday, August 16th 2 points for being a team judge, 1 point for being an observer judge This is a GREAT way to get started in judging Wisconsin Chapter meet Delafield, WI - about a 4 hour drive; Usually the first Saturday in September 2 points for being a team judge, 1 point for being an observer judge Additionally, they usually have a 1 point judging school the Friday night prior to the event Iowa Chapter meet Des Moines, IA - about a 3 hour drive; Usually the second Saturday in September 2 points for being a team judge, 1 point for being an observer judge As always, please reach out to me with any questions you may have.

Treasurer’s Report – Rick presented the budget in Steve’s absence.

Judging – Chris reminded us of the October 5th judging school at Bob Lund’s garage in Lino Lakes.

Saturday, November 16 Chris will have another breakfast meeting to promote the 2014 National in Kansas City. This would be a time to explain what is involved in a National Meet, show pictures, and encourage members to attend. It will be held at Old Country Buffet in Woodbury. Regional Meet – Our next Regional will be May 15 – 17, 2014 in Rochester. Work is currently being done to determine the wearables, the layout, and registration.

Web site – Nick reported that it has been updated. It was agreed that he should add the 2012 & 2013 newsletters in the archives. He indicated that there is a Facebook connection.

North Central Chapter Board Meeting Minutes Newsletter – Dave has the next issue in draft form and will October 3, 2013 release it soon.

Activities – Jerome reported that there were 9 cars for the Members absent: Mike Lyddy, Steve McWhirter, and Rochester run last month.

Mark Ogren, Membership – Jerome reported that we are currently at 115 members.

One of son, Mike Carroll, Jim Fenske, Paul Wozny, Steve & Betty our requirements yet for the year is a fund raiser. Old Business – It was brought up that according to the latest Restorer NCRS online advertising will be offered, hopefully by year end.

New Business – There was a discussion on the dues for 2014. There will be no change. The question was raised about the PayPal option. Nick will look into it.

There was discussion on the handling of Chapter emails. It was decided that Steve Johnston will continue to handle.
