Message from the President By Denny Adams

I hope everyone had a great summer with your family, friends, and Corvette(s). It sure did fly by!

I would like to extend the thanks of the chapter to Steve Hendrickson, the generous sponsor of the Chapter Meet. Each year he graciously opens up his facility in Long Lake to the club by providing a great site for the Meet and even feeds us! Dale Crosby, our Judging Chair, organized and managed the event and Val Crosby led the tabulating team. Thanks to Dale and Val for putting together a very successful Meet again this year. While I’m thanking people, I want to be sure and thank the volunteer judges without whom, there wouldn’t be any judging events and NCRS would not exist.

I have been the Chapter President since October 2003 and I have really enjoyed every minute of it. However, it is time for a change in leadership and I am happy to announce that Jim Neilson will be assuming the role of president. Jim is a Corvette guy and will take the chapter to a

Paul Wozny and Jeff Goldsbury are also leaving the Board this year. I thank both for their years of service. Paul put together a lot of great activities over the years and Jeff did a great job of continuing to build the newsletter to a new level from where Dave Smith left off. Our Vice President, Don Goldsbury will be following his son Jeff to Houston. Don has been instrumental in setting up the club clothing program and working with Don O’Grady on the Winter Social as well as 50 other things. Don always volunteers to help with a positive attitude and he has been great to work with. Thanks Don! .

Along with Jim Neilson, please join me in welcoming to the Board Dave Murphy as our newsletter editor. Dave is freshly coming off volunteering with the Boy Scouts and didn’t want to get bored so he decided to jump in as our editor.

We had a great year and I look forward to an even better one in 2011!

This year is coming to a close and it’s time to renew your membership dues for 2011. Your dues not only entitle you to our quarterly newsletter and many great chapter events, in addition the chapter will again produce another special calendar for 2011 picturing Corvettes of our members. In addition to photographs of great cars, the calendar shows the 2011 important chapter events highlighted each month. It is a great calendar to hang in the garage or den, so renew now so you don’t miss out.

Dues have been increased slightly due to increased costs of producing the newsletter and printing the calendar. Dues will be $25.00 if you choose to receive the Crossed Flags newsletter by Internet or $30.00 if you want a hard copy mailed to you.

North Central Chapter Board Meeting Minutes August 5, 2010 Members present: Don Goldsbury, Steve McWhirter, Bill Kohl, Mark Ogren, Bob Lund, and Dale & Val Crosby.

Members absent: Denny Adams, Jim Fenske, Paul Wozny, & Jeff Goldsbury General Member present: Charlene Ogren Meeting held on the Ogren’s boat in Afton.

Don called the meeting to order at 7:52.

Minutes of the July meeting were approved as submitted.

Bill had no web update – it’s up and running. He did let us know that with the Chapter Flight Award program that he is tracking and reporting for us, we need to have a sign in at each event. Bill needs to turn in a copy in order for us to get credit for the events. It was also suggested that we start using name tags at all events. It not only helps the newer members, but also aids those of us whose memories aren’t what they used to be.

Newsletter – Jeff has the 3rd quarter newsletter on the website and has emailed it to members.

He has suggested that we stop publishing it for mailing. This would save us $600 – $700 per year. Now that we no longer have additional income from a sponsor, we need to take a serious look at our spending.

Activities – Paul reported that there are only four couples signed up for the Fall Color Run to Arrowwood.

Tech – Bob has Sept. 18th set up for a body drop at Joe Galindo’s.

Judging – Dale reported that he and Mark are ready for the Chapter Judging Meet on August 14th. It was discussed and decided that there should be no refunds after the deadline.

Don is still checking on a restaurant for our Winter Social on Saturday, January 8, 2011. He informed us that he will NOT be running for vice president again as he will be moving to Texas next spring. That means that we need to have more members step up to fill the open Board positions.

No new business.

North Central Chapter Board Meeting Minutes September 2, 2010 Members present: Denny Adams, Don Goldsbury, Steve McWhirter, Bill Kohl, Jim Fenske, Paul Wozny, and Dale & Val Crosby.

Members absent: Mark Ogren, Bob Lund, & Jeff Goldsbury Meeting held on the Plymouth Davanni’s.

Denny called the meeting to order.

Minutes of the August meeting were discussed and approved. Jim suggested changing the dues for 2011 to cover the cost of the newsletter and to bring in extra income now that we

no longer have the sponsor revenue. A motion was made, seconded and passed to raise the 2011 annual dues for members receiving the newsletter email to $25 and for those who want a hardcopy to $30.

Judging – Dale reported that the Chapter Meet went well. Thanks to all who participated! He hopes to have the key fobs available by the October meeting to be able to give out to the judges.

Election for 2011 board members will take place at the October board meeting. I will email the ballot and invite to all members.

Treasury – Steve reported that we’re up to date.

Website - Bill will check on the cost to add the New Member Handbook to the website.

Newsletter – Jeff will be publishing the 4th quarter newsletter in about a month.

Membership - Jim reported that we’re still at 87 members.

Activities – Paul reported that there are five couples signed up for the Fall Color Run to Arrowwood later this month.

Don will have an announcement soon on the restaurant for our Winter Social on Saturday, January 8, 2011.

New Business – Bill will be sending an email for a car show on September 11 in Golden Valley.

He believes that we should have a presence at local car shows and be promoting NCRS in order to find new members.

Body Off Tech Session I purchased my 1963 Split Window Corvette back in 2003. The previous owner had performed a frame on restoration of the car in 1990. In 2006 I had the car judged at the local chapter meet to see where it stood in regards to NCRS standards. It just made it to a Second Flight award. I would like to obtain a Top Flight rating and someday pass this car down to my daughter, Sarah, as she enjoys going to car shows and receiving all of the attention the car attracts.

With that in mind I have decided to tackle a frame off restoration and hope to have it back on the road for its 50th birthday.

I talked over what I want to accomplish with Bob Lund and he has agreed to help me with this project. Bob gave me a list of things to start removing from the car to prepare for the body off. I also printed out a couple of lists from various Corvette websites and started taking apart the car. Most of the bolts and parts were replaced 20 years ago, so they were not too bad to remove. Obviously the body mount bolts had not been off, so they presented a challenge.

When I removed the panels inside the rear wheel wells that hold the # 3 body mount bolts, I found an inch of road dust covering the bolts. After vacuuming out the pockets it revealed the well rusted bolts. After soaking them with PB Blaster and letting them sit, I tried using several

different sockets but the head of the bolts started rounding off. I thought for sure we would be cutting off these bolts to be able to remove the body.

As I awoke one morning I recalled that many years ago I had purchased a socket that was made for rounded off bolts.

After searching around, I found the socket in an old tool box and gave it a try. It worked!!

The socket is called the Gator Grip and the website is www.endeavorproducts.com. The website lists many locations where it is sold though I did not find it at Menard's, Wal Mart or my local Ace Hardware store. I did find it at the Home Depot in Eagan for $12.

I also was not able to remove the #4 body mount bolts even with the help of my wife and daughter. Bob came over and after heating up the bolts we were able to break them with brute strength. The body was now ready to remove.

On October 16 around 20 members showed up for the body off tech session and it was a beautiful day. There were at least 10 Corvettes parked on the street and driveway and it made quite an impression on the neighbors. After enjoying some donuts and coffee we were ready for the main event. My daughter and I operated the lifts and it went smoothly with all eyes and hands on deck making sure everything cleared.

"Extra Pop Rivet?"

Several owners have responded on the NCRS Technical Forum of items left by the factory in their Corvettes. Upon purchasing and inspecting a late January built 1969 Corvette; I noticed something sticking out of the sealer goop in the windshield wiper well. Looking closer, it was identified as a pop rivet. This is just one of those interesting finds that one is fascinated with; and it adds to the mystique of these vehicles.
