HEALTH AND WELLNESS ABROAD

Health and wellness lay the foundation for successful experiences abroad, and most of our study abroad programs have services that support our students’ mental/emotional, academic, and physical health needs. To start, students should use the health and wellness information in each program description to understand if a program offers the general support they need. North Central College study abroad advisors are available to discuss program specifics and connect students with staff and resources at our partner institutions so students can make educated program decisions and create realistic health plans for while they’re abroad. Contact the North Central Study Abroad team with any questions or concerns.

Academic resources at our partner institutions may include tutoring, writing centers or the ability to support students needing extended test time or note-takers.

Mental and emotional resources at our partner institutions may include access to on-campus or off-campus therapy or English-speaking counselors.

Physical health resources at our partner institutions may include an on-campus clinic or local hospital, as well as a campus and community that can support students with mobility, hearing, or other physical needs.

STUDY ABROAD BY MAJOR

Studying abroad is possible for all majors and minors! All study abroad students should work in partnership with their student success coach to determine when it is best to study abroad and which degree requirements they should complete while abroad.

In the semester before departure, all students will work with North Central's Registrar's Office to have courses from their host institution pre-approved.

Scan the QR code below to explore recommendations on programs based on your major or minor.

If you don't see your major or minor on this list, don't worry! Schedule an appointment with a study abroad advisor to explore your options.

CARDINAL DESTINATION COURSES ABROAD

(MAY TERM)

Cardinal Destination Courses Abroad (CDCA) give students the opportunity to participate in short-term international travel experiences. A CDCA is a 2-3 week faculty-led course abroad that takes place in May, shortly after the spring semester ends (May Term).

Students travel internationally as a group with North Central College faculty and/or staff members. Each May Term course abroad includes linked prerequisite work students complete before departure. CDCA course topics, prerequisite work, and locations change every year giving students the opportunity to participate in multiple May Term courses abroad throughout their time at North Central College.

May Term 2026 destinations include: China, Costa Rica, Dublin & London, Greece & Italy, Ireland & Northern Ireland, Japan, Scotland, and Spain

Registration for CDCA opens approximately a year before departure, during the normal North Central College spring course registration. Students should consult with their student success coach to add a CDCA to their plan of study. Registration for CDCA closes when the course is full and no later than early November. Information sessions and campus marketing campaigns will educate interested students on course content, travel itineraries, program and airfare costs, enrollment, and more. For additional information and a list of CDCA opportunities, check out the CDCA webpage northcentralcollege.edu/global-education/cdca .

CDCA 2026 enrollment deadline is November 1, 2025

All CDCA opportunities are worth 2-credits, which students register for in the spring 2026 semester. This 2-credit course (CARD*260) encompasses the prerequisite work and the travel component in May. All participants must be enrolled in the respective 2-credit CARD*260 in spring semester to be eligible to travel during May Term.

ADDITIONAL NOTES

North Central College provides all students enrolled in a CDCA a primary emergency medical insurance policy for the course dates abroad.

Every student participant is required to abide by the College policies as outlined in the North Central College Student Handbook and by the expectations outlined in the course syllabus. If, in the judgement of a faculty/staff leader, a student has violated the course expectations or College policy as stated in the Student Handbook, the student may be sent home at their own expense. In such circumstances, a student's parent(s)/ guardian(s) may also be notified and additional disciplinary action may be taken by the College upon the student's return to the United States.

All CDCA enrolled students will be required to attend a pre-departure information session in April. Failure to attend may jeopardize ability to participate.

CANCELLATION AND REFUND POLICY

Refund schedules for airfare depend on individual airlines; faculty leaders will inform all participants of the relevant deadlines and policies.

If an enrolled student withdraws from the CDCA before March 1, 2026, then 50% of the remaining balance of the program fee will be billed to the student account if costs have been incurred by the College.

If an enrolled student withdraws from the CDCA after March 1, 2026, then 100% of the program fee is forfeited.

If a student withdraws from the respective CARD*260 spring semester course, the student will not be eligible to travel abroad and will be responsible for any associated fees (airline or program fees) as outlined in the Cancellation and Refund Policy.

Successful completion of the spring semester preparatory coursework is REQUIRED for participation in the May Term international travel section.

GROUP PROGRAMS

Group programs provide students with an additional layer of support throughout their study abroad experience. The Center for Global Education organizes airfare arrangements and meets students at the airport to support with check-in. For the NCC-in-Costa Rica program, if 10 or more NC students enroll, a NC faculty member will accompany the group for the full semester.

Students participating in Group Programs pay North Central College tuition plus a $5,000 program fee. The program fee includes tuition, orientation, in-country airport transfers, and housing as predetermined by North Central College. The fee does NOT include airfare, travel to and from Chicago O'hare Airport, visa fees, departure tax, book, host country insurance, personal travel, housing outside of accomodation, or spending money.

EXCHANGE PROGRAMS

Exchange programs encourage and facilitate direct exchange of students between North Central College and its partner institutions worldwide. Students remain enrolled at North Central College, keeping their financial aid and maintaining progress toward their degrees.

In general, students pay tuition to North Central College and housing costs to the host institution. Airfare, departure tax, books, host country insurance plans, extra personal travel and spending money are not included in tuition and accommodation fees; these are additional costs paid by each student.

Please note that a certain number of exchange spots are available for each program each year. Those students who demonstrate financial need and who meet all program eligibility requirements are prioritized as exchange participants.

DIRECT ENROLLMENT PROGRAMS

Direct Enrollment programs give students the opportunity to study abroad independently at one of our partner institutions. Students apply directly for admission into a certain faculty or department at selected universities and, once accepted, become completely immersed in the adademic and campus life of their chosen school. Students in Direct Enrollment programs pay North Central College tuition plus a $5,000 program fee. The program fee includes placement, orientation and guidance fees, as well as standard self-catered housing at the host institution abroad. North Central College selects accommodations; if students choose to upgrade, they are responsible for paying any difference in cost. The fee does NOT include airfare, travel to and from airports, meals, visa fees, departure tax, books, host country insurance plans, personal travel, housing outside of accommodation, or spending money.

North Central College offers intensive language study programs in Chinese, French, German, Japanese and Spanish.

How much does it cost?

Study abroad at North Central College is very affordable. Students pay North Central College tuition and either a $5,000 program fee or housing costs to the host university. All students pay a $40 non-refundable application fee. Airfare and personal expenses are not included.

Can I keep my financial aid?

Most North Central College based-financial aid can be applied to semester and yearlong study abroad programs, with the exception of S.I.R.O.L. For links to additional scholarship information visit the financial aid section of our website at northcentralcollege.edu/studyabroad/aid to learn more.

How do credits and classes work?

Students enroll full-time at a university/program abroad where they earn credits and fulfill major, minor, general education, and elective requirements. All approved credits earned abroad transfer back to North Central College. Students earn letter grades at the university/program abroad that are reflected on their North Central College transcript and are factored into their GPA. Students must maintain full-time status (12 U.S. credits) while abroad, keeping them on track for graduation.

Can I study abroad if I’m on tuition remission or tuition exchange?

Absolutely! Students on tuition remission or tuition exchange pay all costs incurred by North Central College. It usually ends up being most affordable for these students to participate in exchange programs, but not always.

I want to study abroad, what do I do next?

Before students submit an application, they need to meet with a study abroad advisor in the Center for Global Education, discuss with their student success coach how study abroad fits into their academic plan of study and attend our Study Abroad Fair in late September!
