2025 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY

North Carolina’s state orchestra—an orchestra achieving the highest level of artistic quality and performance standards, and embracing our dual legacies of statewide service and music education.

“Bach’s Double Violin Concerto was as a glorious experience! We are so fortunate to have our talented NC Symphony musicians and our beloved music director, Carlos Miguel Prieto.”

SOUND THAT TRANSCENDS TIME

From time-honored masterworks to bold new works, this was a season defined by virtuosity and vision.

ARTISTRY THAT RESONATES

The North Carolina Symphony delivered a bold and wide-ranging 2024/25 season, deepening artistic impact and audience connection across the state. Under Music Director Carlos Miguel Prieto, the orchestra brought expressive range and technical brilliance to works like Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique, Stravinsky’s The Firebird, and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.

Prieto’s dynamic leadership earned statewide acclaim. As EarRelevant noted in its review of The Ring Without Words, he conducted “with enormous physical energy and emotional passion,” drawing out “expressive playing” with remarkable poise. Guest artists including James Ehnes and Stephen Hough added virtuosic depth, enhancing a season praised for its clarity, intensity, and emotional resonance—hallmarks of NCS’s artistic identity.

Through more than 300 concerts—including performances presented with chapters across North Carolina—the Symphony reaffirmed its role as a cultural cornerstone. From Meymandi Concert Hall to the Summerfest stage, NCS brought world-class artistry to audiences of all ages, sparking wonder, reflection, and connection statewide.

“This is the kind of music NCS does so well, with nuanced ensemble... simply put—perfection.”

ARTISTRY THAT SHAPES TOMORROW

The North Carolina Symphony advanced the future of orchestral music through bold commissions and meaningful partnerships. The 2024/25 season spotlighted composers whose work reflects the evolving voice of contemporary composition. A standout was the co-commissioned Violin Concerto by Errollyn Wallen, written for and performed by Philippe Quint. Praised for its emotional immediacy and inventive structure, the premiere affirmed the Symphony’s role in bringing new music to life. Performances also featured works by Lora Kvint, Caroline Shaw, Rhiannon Giddens, Michael Abels, and Gabriela Ortiz—each offering a distinct sonic perspective and cultural resonance. Their originality brought fresh energy to the concert hall and reinforced the Symphony’s commitment to artistic relevance. Through these collaborations, NCS inspired audiences to engage with orchestral music in new ways—shaping the sound of tomorrow by investing in the voices of today.

“Despite being such a seminal work with countless unique renditions, I found Prieto’s interpretation to be one of the most compelling I’ve had the privilege of hearing.”

FULFILLING OUR PROMISE: MUSIC EDUCATION ACROSS NORTH CAROLINA

Western Residency: Students explored music and literacy through our PNC Grow Up Great Music Discovery program, part of the 28 education programs and public performances spanning 18 counties during the Western Residency.

SUPPORT FOR MUSIC EDUCATION

Thank you to the State of North Carolina and our Lead Music Education Supporters

Edgecombe County Residency: Through a music residency generously supported by the Anonymous Trust, the Symphony performed Education Concerts and presented seven ensembles in the Schools programs, reaching more than 1,500 students.

Harnett County: The North Carolina Symphony Brass Trio visited an elementary school on Fort Bragg to perform two Ensembles in the Schools programs.

Wake County: This year marked the beginning of a new partnership with Moore Square Magnet Middle School’s orchestra program, offering students enriching experiences including sectional coaching with NCS musicians, a performance opportunity on the Ovations series, and a chance to attend an Open Rehearsal.

SOUND THAT SPARKS DISCOVERY

From storytime to the concert stage, the Symphony creates opportunities that change lives. Our statewide education programs foster curiosity and creativity through experiences tailored for young learners—whether they’re discovering music for the first time or stepping into the spotlight.

Pre-K children engage through PNC Grow Up Great Music Discovery, blending literacy and musical play. Students experience orchestral sound firsthand through Ensembles in the Schools and Statewide Music Education Concerts, supported by online resources and curriculum guides.

Young musicians develop their artistry through workshops with guest artists, North Carolina Symphony musicians, and Music Director Carlos Miguel Prieto, These opportunities include sectional work through our new partnership with Moore Square Middle School and performance opportunities like Ovations and side by side rehearsals—where youth play alongside our musicians, building skills and confidence through shared artistry.

Musical growth isn’t just about learning notes—it’s about discovering voice, connection, sparking community that lasts a lifetime.

“The conductor was EXCELLENT! Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the concert, and we’re looking forward to next year.”

“Thank you again for this opportunity! Many of my students have never seen an orchestra.”

SUPPORTING EDUCATORS

Behind every inspired student is a dedicated teacher—and the Symphony is proud to support their journey. Through professional development workshops, curriculum resources, and meaningful partnerships, we create spaces where educators connect, deepen their knowledge, and bring orchestral music to life in their classrooms.

Whether attending a hands-on workshop, collaborating with guest artists, or engaging through our concert-based lesson guides, teachers are integral to our statewide impact. Our curriculum-based education programs are designed with their needs in mind—blending creativity, practical support, and shared purpose.

When educators feel empowered, entire classrooms thrive.

STEWARDS OF SOUND, PARTNERS IN SERVICE

The North Carolina Symphony is more than an orchestra—we are a statewide cultural resource, dedicated to enriching lives through music and community connection.

This dedication extends beyond music. After Hurricane Helene, musicians and staff filled the Symphony’s education van with needed relief supplies for people in Western North Carolina—reflecting our belief that cultural leadership means showing up, listening deeply, and serving with purpose.

INNOVATING THE CONCERT

EXPERIENCE

This season, the North Carolina Symphony continued to lead in expanding how orchestral music is shared and experienced across the state. Through our Virtual Interactive Stage, thousands of students engaged with live Music Education Concerts. Public livestreams brought performances beyond the concert hall, while immersive events like Mozart Requiem by Candlelight offered audience experiences shaped by atmosphere and imagination.

SOUND THAT SHAPES FUTURES

Through Music Education Concerts, visits to classrooms and libraries, and residencies, we make music an essential part of growing up in North Carolina.

THE STATE IS OUR STAGE

The North Carolina Symphony’s commitment to statewide service is woven into our foundation. From school gyms to libraries and concert halls, we meet communities where they are, bringing meaningful musical experiences to every corner of the state. Our Western Residency, program, side by side rehearsals, and Education Concerts inspired thousands of students. We nurtured young musicians and ensured that—whether sharing in the music in person or through digital programs—the North Carolina Symphony remains an essential part of growing up in North Carolina. It’s work we love, and work that defines us.

“Taking my students to the NC Symphony is the highlight of my year! Bravo!”

NORTH CAROLINA SYMPHONY FOUNDATION

Established in 1982, the North Carolina Symphony’s Foundation Board receives and holds the endowment of the North Carolina Symphony. Building the Symphony’s endowed funds is vital to ensuring that generations of North Carolinians will continue to experience the power of live orchestral music. Endowed funds are held in perpetuity and managed wisely to produce consistent funding for the Symphony’s mission while supporting the innovation necessary for the future. Today, the Symphony’s Foundation Board manages a growing endowment of $43M, which produces funding that supports 9 % of the orchestra’s annual operating budget. Thank you to the visionary donors who support the Symphony through legacy or endowment giving.

A HEART BEHIND EVERY NOTE.

A Community Like No Other.

2025 Friends of Note Committee Co-Chair Kristen Hess thanked event sponsors and attendees.

The North Carolina Symphony is sustained by a remarkable community of supporters—individuals, corporations, foundations, volunteers, and the State of North Carolina—whose generosity makes it possible for thousands of students and audience members to experience the thrill of live orchestral music each year.

Your support fuels every note we play and every mile we travel. Thank you!

February brought record-setting attendance at the annual Musicians’ Circle Luncheon.

FRIENDS OF NOTE 2025

In May, the Symphony’s annual Friends of Note fundraising event raised a record $333,000 for statewide music education. Thank you to Title Sponsors Ron & Nancy McFarlane, Founding Sponsor PNC, all our generous sponsors, our committee members, and everyone who attended.

NCS musicians Anna Black (violin), Tiffany Kang (violin), Samuel Almaguer (clarinet), Elizabeth Beilman (cello), and Kurt Tseng (viola) performed at the Symphony’s annual recognition event for donors in the Concertmaster’s Circle.

LAMAR STRINGFIELD SOCIETY

This year, 13 families made the inspiring decision to join the Lamar Stringfield Society which celebrates friends of the Symphony who have generously endowed musicians’ chairs, established endowed funds, or included the Symphony in their estate plans.

NORTH CAROLINA SYMPHONY SOCIETY, INC.

The Society Board is the governing, policy, and operating board of the Symphony Society. It secures financial resources, approves program goals, engages in strategic planning, and oversees budgets, continuing the Society’s mission to achieve the highest level of artistic quality and performance standards, and embracing the dual legacies of statewide service and music education. “The North Carolina Symphony is a world class orchestra that plays at the highest level for a growing audience. It is also a cultural institution that serves its community in education and outreach concerts with true commitment and passion. I have proudly witnessed the orchestra grow in every sense over the last couple of seasons and look forward to an even better future!”

Carlos Miguel Prieto
