West Vancouver council has identified the monster in their midst but just what they’ll do with it is still unclear.

A discussion of neighbourhood character and building bulk — colloquially known as the monster homes debate — drew more than 100

interested parties to a town hall meeting at West Vancouver Community Centre Tuesday.

While developers dominated previous gettogethers,Tuesday’s affair largely featured townsfolk calling for a respite from a ceaseless parade of construction they say saps the serenity from previously bucolic hamlets.

The rash of tear-

downs has put West Vancouver’s culture in jeopardy, according to Barbara Hunter, who was speaking on behalf of the West Vancouver Historical Society.

“Heritage helps us foster civic responsibility and citizenship,” Hunter said.

Builders frequently wipe out the past while new buyers offer little solace to the present, according to Hunter, who said a string of empty houses wouldn’t help revitalize Ambleside.

“West Vancouver is one of the best places in the world to live, not just to

invest,” she said.

In concluding her remarks, Hunter asked council how much of West Vancouver we want to retain.

The municipality needs to look to the future, countered Marque Thompson, principal of residential design firm Marque Design.

While acknowledging it was a sensitive subject, Thompson pointed out that many speakers at Tuesday’s meeting are a little older.

“We have to be thinking about West Vancouver in 2035 and 2050,” he said.

Trees were a frequent topic of conversation Tuesday, with many residents voicing concerns about the loss of the municipality’s forest esthetic.

“In order to build new, trees have to be sacrificed,” Thompson said. “If a tree is old and it’s removed and a new one is put in its place, that’s probably better.”

Thompson also addressed the subject of demolition, which he said usually happens when a house has been poorly maintained and renovation is no longer an option.

Demolition has been sweeping the district, according to former councillor Rod Day. There have been 408 demolitions in the last three years and the numbers have risen each year, according to Day. “If nothing else, council should substantially increase demolition fees to help compensate neighbourhoods,” he said.

Hartvigsen’s two kids typically would be standing in that spot on a Thursday at 8:40 a.m. — when the accident occurred — but they had left for school early that day. “I would have lost two children that day, that’s how dire the situation is,” said Hartvigsen.

Hartvigsen’s home is situated right at the end of the curve in the road on Cliffridge, which starts out steep and winds through a residential neighbourhood.

The traffic flows down through Canyon Heights with drivers, some who speed, coming onto Cliffridge to connect with the arterial route on Montroyal Boulevard.

Neighbours have counted five significant accidents on Cliffridge in recent years, including one where a car flipped over and landed on Hartvigsen’s property.

Hartvigsen was hit by a sideview mirror on a speeding vehicle, while walking on his street with his daughter on his shoulders.

“It was a minivan, and it was a mom, and she didn’t even stop. She was flying,” recalled Hartvigsen.

The close calls on Cliffridge have prompted residents to ask the district for traffic calming measures such as speed bumps, but they were told it would impede bus travel on that road. “I recently said to the district, ‘On what planet are the performance and suspension of a bus more important than lives of children,” said Hartvigsen,

The district’s traffic engineering department, however, says it’s not that simple and requires a study of the street and neighbourhood consultation.

Gavin Joyce, the district’s general manager of Engineering, Parks and

Facilities, said staff have visited Cliffridge since the latest incident and are currently gathering information such as vehicle volume and speed data to determine what further action should be taken.

Joyce said the first step usually involves speed enforcement such as a speed reader board and

some RCMP presence on the street.

More permanent measures the district might consider are speed humps, which bring vehicles to an abrupt stop, or speed tables, which have a flat top with ramps on both sides, allowing for less of an impact on large vehicles like buses.

Under the district’s

Local Area Service policy, currently being reviewed, the onus is on the residents to pay for traffic calming on non-collector roads, and requires 67 per cent approval from the homeowners. Joyce estimated it costs around $4,000 for a speed hump and $6,000 for a speed table.

In the recent case of Sunset Boulevard, there was majority support from the residents for speed humps or speed tables. But a counter petition from people who frequently drive on Sunset put those plans on hold.

The Sunset issue spawned a traffic calming policy review, which was discussed at a Committee of the Whole meeting Monday.

Coun. Doug MacKay-Dunn is concerned the current policy gives way to a two-tier system in which affluent areas would be more likely to afford traffic calming.

Coun. Robin Hicks called for residents’ approval level to be raised to at least 75 per cent. Coun. Mathew Bond, saying it could be perceived that every local road needs to be traffic calmed, is hesitant to have the district pay for those measures.

Mayor Richard Walton, meanwhile, said traffic calming projects need to be placed in priority sequence, based on risk assessment, because “we don’t have an unlimited budget.”

District staff will report back to council with suggestions on whether or not to raise the required level of neighbourhood support, and when traffic calming requests on residential streets involve safety aspects, should the district pay for them.

NV school board to allow video

Members of the public who wish to videotape public meetings of the North Vancouver board of education will now be allowed to do so, provided they agree to certain restrictions. But school trustees stopped short of having the school district videotape its own meetings, saying the projected price of $26,000 was too expensive.

School trustees adopted the new videotaping rules this week, formalizing an

agreement that’s been in place since December, after parent Shane Nelson challenged the board’s longstanding policy of not allowing video recordings of meetings.

Under the new rules, anyone can video record meetings, as long as the chairperson is informed in advance, and there is no recording made of children or members of the public gallery. Anyone present at a meeting can also ask not to be recorded.

The issue of videotaping public board meetings first came up last fall, after Nelson was told twice to turn off his camera or be kicked out of meetings.

Nelson was told once he couldn’t film because the school district had no

policy about it, and it might contravene privacy rules.

But Nelson argued those weren’t good enough reasons to ban his camera at a public meeting. He was subsequently allowed to film while the board studied the issue.

A committee that examined the issue noted a video record promotes transparency of school board decisions and provides a more complete record of discussion than meeting minutes. Potential concerns included putting a “chill” on people’s willingness to take part in meetings, worries that “playing to the camera” could change discussions among trustees and the potential for misuse of video clips.

Trustees who spoke

Tuesday supported the filming of meetings. Ideally, they said they’d like to see the school district take on that task — as is the case for North Shore municipal councils, which post video clips online.

“I hope in the future we can come up with a way of officially recording for the public,” said trustee Christine Sacre.

Technology is changing so fast, “we have to be open to it,” she said.

But trustees said they couldn’t justify spending the estimated $26,000 it would cost to buy equipment, archive footage and pay labour costs of reviewing and posting the videos.

Trustee Jessica Stanley said she hoped a more costeffective solution could be

found by the time the board reviews the policy in a year.

Nelson called the board’s decision “cautious but fairly reasonable.”

Nelson said he still questions why someone at a public meeting should be allowed to say they don’t want to be recorded, but added he’d abide by the policy.

Nelson added he’d prefer the school district did its own recording. “I missed my kid’s choir performance (Tuesday),” he said. “I would like to not have to go to every meeting.”

Nelson acknowledged none of the school board videos he’s posted online have gone viral yet, although he added, “some of the videos get beyond 10 viewers.”

Just as one labour dispute at Capilano University is coming to an end, another one is beginning.

The administration and Capilano Faculty Association reached a tentative five-year deal this week after a months’ long strike that saw the last days of class cancelled and final exams temporarily postponed.

The deal includes a 5.5 per cent pay increase, a few services added to benefits, enshrining academic freedom in the collective bargaining agreement and the creation of a joint committee to deal with job security and benefits for part-time employees.

Rick Gale, Capilano’s academic vice-president, expressed relief to have a deal, which lasts until March 2019, in place.

“I think it’s fair to say that both sides have put a lot of work into this and have been able to achieve something. I’m not sure that either side is completely happy or enthralled about this but we’re to a place where we can at least get some more business done,” he said.

The last three years have been rife with acrimony between faculty and the administration over program cuts, academic freedom and the school’s leadership. Gale said he believes this deal will help put that to rest.

“I honestly think there have been a lot of things that were brought out in this negotiation that needed to be brought out. I think we’re turning a corner.

I think we’re coming to agreement, or at least agreement to disagree, on some things. It puts us in a pretty good place for the next five years. It puts us in a place of clarity at the very least,” he said.

But, as Cap’s negotiators were shaking hands with the faculty’s negotiators, the school’s non-faculty staff voted 82 per cent in favour of a strike after contract talks between the two sides have failed to progress.

At least one resident raised the alarm that council seemed to be resorting to “draconian changes.”

“Private property is still

pretty sacred in Canada and I do believe it needs to be respected,” said Claus Jensen.

While another speaker described the problems that could be wrought from “tinkering with market forces,” the majority of Tuesday’s attendees echoed the call for more stringent rules.

“I, for one, am willing to pay a higher property tax if it means that I will preserve neighbourhoods,” said Scenery Slater.

Skyrocketing realestate prices are the reason many new houses get built, according to West Vancouver’s manager of development planning Chris Bishop.

“I don’t think it’s necessarily reasonable to expect a 1950s bungalow to be rebuilt on that lot,” Bishop said, discussing multi-million dollar lot sales.

“But we have to find a way that new development can coexist alongside more historic development,” he said.

udos to the North Vancouver School District for taking its first baby steps into the, um — 20th century — with its decision to allow video recording of school board meetings.

Granted, it took a fair bit of navelgazing for trustees to come around to what is seemingly obvious — that allowing a public window on their decisions is a good idea.

In the age of Periscope and Snapchat, it’s somewhat surprising that a 1980s technology has inspired such rumination.

But the supportive comments from trustees this week were a significant distance from the knee-jerk reaction that prevailed at the board table when a parent first propped up his iPad and pushed Record six months ago.

We’d still argue the policy doesn’t go far enough.

distinguishing between protecting students within school activity and what adults discuss in open government forums. But fundamentally they are discussing the people’s business in their meetings. There’s no reason why anyone who attends shouldn’t be part of the public record — whether they wish to be or not.

A video is a potentially powerful record.

It not only allows us to hear what was said, but also the tone of the voice used.

It shows who was silent, who got red in the face, who was texting their way through a presentation.

Parents are those with the biggest stake in what happens at school board. For practical reasons, they’re also the least likely to turn up to meetings.

The new policy goes the first step to providing a small window on decisions that impact their kids’ lives.

Democracy relies on citizen participation Dear Editor: The City of North Vancouver’s proposal to eliminate public input was equally preposterous as the approval of the amendment that punishes the public’s input and behavior based on the staff’s or council’s perception and that allows them to classify it as bullying and harassment.

Democracy is the foundation of our country’s values.The active participation of the people, as citizens, in politics and civic life is what make us different from totalitarian regimes.The key role of citizens in a democracy is to participate in public life, without that input, democracy is transformed into dictatorship.

Citizens have the obligation to become informed about public issues, to watch carefully how their political leaders and representatives use their powers, and to express their own opinions and interests.This participation involves also debating public issues, attending community meetings, petitioning the government and even protesting.

Democracy depends on citizen participation.

No public input because of government’s silencing equals totalitarianism, and granted, that participation must be peaceful, respectful of the law and tolerant of the different views of other groups and individuals.

Eliminating this input because it could seem inappropriate is an insult to our basic freedom rights.

Every citizen has basic rights that the state cannot take away from them and these rights are guaranteed under international law.

You have the right to have your own beliefs, and to say and write what you think and no one can tell you what you must think, believe and say or not say. Nobody.

For democracy to work, citizens must not only participate and exercise their rights.They must also observe certain principles and rules of democratic conduct and must respect the law and reject violence.This only works if this rule is both sided.

Nothing ever justifies using violence against somebody that has something to say just because you disagree with them. Silencing people from what they want to say is a form of violence.

In my view, people should question the decisions of the government and when you express your opinions, you should also listen to the views of other people, even people you disagree with.

Everyone has a right to be heard and if one group is excluded and fails to be heard, this turns against democracy and ends in anger and frustration.We all know where this road leads to.

Democracy requires compromise.

As Aung San Suu Kyi (1991), Nobel Peace Prize said: “It is not power that corrupts but fear.

Fear of losing power corrupts those who wield it and fear of the scourge of power corrupts those who are subject to it.”

Winds of change seem to be in the air Is this country in for a political shakeup the likes of which we haven’t seen in years?

It’s certainly easy to get that feeling. The “unthinkable” happened in Alberta, and one has to wonder if that was a seismic tremor that is signalling a larger earthquake to come.

The winds of change seem to be in the air, and I don’t envy an incumbent government having to test the voters right now, but that task falls first to Prime Minister Stephen Harper come this October.

While political polls must be taken with a large grain of salt, federal Conservative strategists have to be alarmed at what four polls of individual ridings in B.C. uncovered last week.

Nationally, a series of polls suggest a tight three-way race between the Conservatives, the Liberals and the New Democractic Party. The trend lines in those polls favour the New Democrats, who have been rising in popularity while the others are slumping or

But the polling done in B.C. by Insights West on behalf of the environmental organization the Dogwood Initiative revealed something more startling: an apparent collapse of support for the Conservative party right across the board.

In four coastal ridings newly created by redistribution, the Conservative vote appears to be cut in half from what it was in the 2011 election. Even if we attach some healthy skepticism to polls, a loss of this proportion may signal that

the electorate is exhibiting some extreme volatility, which is not good news for a sitting government.

Before you dismiss all political polling out of hand, consider this: polling

by Insights West was done the old-fashioned way, using methods employed back when polling was generally very accurate, time and again.

The pollster, Mario Canseco, used telephones to reach a random sample of 301 voters in each riding and ensured his sample had a strong base of older voters (since they vote in much greater numbers than younger voters, so their participation in a poll is a key to make it as accurate as possible).

These were not online polls, or polls made up of panels of volunteers wanting to be part of a sample. Those kinds of polls, which are much, much cheaper than telephone polls, are all the rage these days and I’ve learned to become rather wary of them (interestingly, only the B.C.

Liberal Party’s telephone polling correctly called the 2013 provincial election outcome).

If these riding polls showed a tight race between the parties, it would be hard to know what to read of them.

That’s because if you take the 2011 voting results and “transpose” them over the new riding boundaries, it would show four tight races between the Conservatives and the NDP. The Conservatives would be the incumbent in two ridings (CourtneyAlberni and Burnaby North-Seymour) while the NDP would be the incumbent in the other two (Cowichan-MalahatLangford and EsquimaltSaanich-Sooke).

But Insights West’s findings did not find any close races in the offing.

About a quarter of the electorate in each riding is undecided right now, and the NDP has a significant lead in all four seats (the Liberals seem to be picking up some strength, but not enough to suggest they

are contenders in these ridings).

Another startling discovery is that in three of the ridings, the NDP has a healthy lead among voters aged 55 and older.

Those voters tend to vote Conservative more than the other parties, but a large number of them now say they will vote for another party (this also happened in the recent Alberta election, as lifelong Conservative voters abandoned the party in favor of the NDP).

If this is indeed happening in these four ridings, it is conceivable it may be happening in other ridings in other parts of the country where the Conservatives are incumbents or competitive.

The Conservatives insist they will remain competitive because the

other two options — the Liberals and the NDP — will split the vote in enough ridings for them to win with about 40 per cent of the vote.

But another scenario may be developing: the Conservatives are indeed in a precarious position, and their support begins dropping to the point where that split on the other side doesn’t matter any longer.

The electorate seems to be very volatile right now, which means the status quo may no longer be the favored outcome of elections.

Whether this mood is maintained through the October federal vote will be fascinating to see.

According to Sage Aaron, COPE 378’s communications director, the university is seeking the ability to terminate employees on leave, regressive changes to layoff language, reduce the minimum hours a called-in employee works from four to two, put weekend travel on employees’ own time without compensation, and changes to the

prescription drug plan that makes it more expensive for members.

“It was very clear their position was not about bargaining. This was reiterated with their last proposal, which they basically dropped on us and said ‘Take it or leave it.’ They’re not interested in having a conversation and coming to an understanding,” Aaron said.

The union must still give 72 hours’ notice

before starting any kind of job action, whether it be walking off the job and picketing, work-to-rule or handing out pamphlets.

Gale said he’s hoping that won’t be necessary as there is at least one more mediation session scheduled.

“I hope that’s not going to happen. We, of course, are making contingency plans. It’s a little easier in the summer than it was at the end of the spring term, obviously,” he said.

The City of North Vancouver has revamped the process it uses when horse trading with developers.

Council voted Monday night to adopt a new density bonusing policy that applies a formula for the amount of extra residential space developers can build in exchange for things that the community benefits from but developers wouldn’t pursue on their own.

That typically means affordable housing units, employment generating space, community amenity space, market rental units or rescuing heritage buildings from destruction.

The formula is based on the zoning and land-use of the property in question and which part of the city it is in. There is now an emphasis on the city receiving cash, 20 per cent of which will be set aside for affordable housing, on par with the extra value being created for the developer.

The new policy also

puts a hard cap on how much extra density can be negotiated for. The old method, in which staff negotiated with applicants on a case-by-case basis behind closed doors was criticized by the public, council and developers alike as lacking clarity and transparency.

The updated policy had unanimous support from council, although Coun.

Rod Clark said he still disagrees with allowing more density in exchange for employment generating space.

Election expenses under review Campaign finance documents showing new numbers

Council candidates from the 2014 municipal elections, including City of North Vancouver Mayor Darrell Mussatto, are having to check their math.

Elections BC has been reviewing the campaign finance disclosure statements filed by the more than 3,600 candidates who ran for mayor, council and school board in the province last year — the first time the agency has had that responsibility.

The initial campaign finance disclosure forms showed Mussatto accepted $91,394.79 in donations but spent only $74,051.24, raising questions about where the rest of the money was. An amended expense form filed last month shows $99,034.75 in both donations and expenses, including another $7,639.10 donation from Coun.

“I disclosed that I had received a donation but I hadn’t put it on my expense side so it made it look like I had money,” Mussatto said. “The people at Elections BC have been very helpful. They totally understood my situation and empathized. They said

these are very complex documents and it’s a lot of accounting you have to learn how to do.”

Further muddying the waters was the fact the mayor shared campaign expenses and donations with six other candidates, including Keating and Couns. Linda Buchanan and Holly Back. Much of their shared contributions came in the form of donated staff time from K&T Properties to work in a campaign phone bank supporting Mussato and his allies.

Mussatto has been facing backlash for the donation on and off council as K&T’s affiliate Playtime Gaming is currently petitioning the city to overturn its ban on commercial gambling.

Mussatto said he never had any discussions with the company before they contributed staff to his phone bank. Instead, the donation likely came because of his stance on gaming over his many terms on council, Mussatto said.

“This is not the first time we’ve had gaming come to us. We have had it over the last 20 years.

Employing disciplines spanning from burlesque to ballet, dancers will present a no-holds-barred comment on Canada’s political climate in the nation’s capital next month — while standing on an incredibly tiny platform.

Dances for a Small Stage is a vivacious Vancouver-based dance series that showcases new and established contemporary dance forms in a completely unconventional venue: picture an intimate Vegas-style cocktail lounge or cabaret atmosphere, and a ridiculously small stage.

We’re talking a three by four metre platform plunked down one metre away from the closest audience member, which serves to foster an

intimate entertainment experience.

This inventive approach to live dance theatre started in Vancouver in 2002, and since then 200 choreographers and performers from varied dance backgrounds have graced the small stage.

And now seven of these Vancouver-based dancers will travel to Ottawa’s National Arts Centre to present an audacious, politically charged program of new music and dance creations, as part of the 2015 Magnetic North Theatre Festival on June 9 and 10.

Vancouver audiences will have an opportunity to take in an “avant-premiere” of the program, titled Small Stage Canada, a week before the dance troupe takes off for Ottawa.The eclectic group of music, dance and theatre talents will perform at The Emerald, a Chinatown supper club, self-described as “old school Vegas glamour with a little bit of anything goes attitude.”

“It’s tiny and you get to have a drink and you get to rub elbows with the person next to you,” explains Dances for a Small Stage artistic producer Julie-anne Saroyan, of the intimate venue. “It’s a completely different experience than going to the Queen Elizabeth Theatre.”

The political platform for Small Stage Canada is derived from the Weimar Cabaret in 1920s-era Germany when political commentary and liberal ideas were expressed through art forms, after decades of dictatorship in that country.

Small Stage Canada also takes it cues from the famous musical Cabaret set against the backdrop of the Nazis rising to power in Berlin. Inside the asylum known as the Kit Kat Klub, cabaret dancers masked the grim reality of the Nazi regime through entertainment.

While the Small Stage performers are not dealing with political challenges on the same scale as 1920s Germany, they have been asked

by Saroyan to come up with contemporary issues from Canada’s political landscape and set those feelings to music and dance.

Saroyan, who is excited to see what topics the performers choose, speculates that it could be anything from the economy to what happened to the penny.

Graduation is only a few weeks away, but it’s not likely that Julia Sarah Stone will be caught setting up a beach scene on the school steps or tp’ing the principal’s car.

The 17-year-old actor has nothing but good things to say about Eric Hamber secondary, theVancouver high school she still attends full time, despite a lot of time off for auditions and long shoots. “My teachers are very supportive,” she insists. She says she’s not treated any differently by the kids at school, either: “I’m just another person to my friends.”

True, while her classmates may have missed her breakout role in the indie film TheYear Dolly Parton Was My Mom, they couldn’t miss her as street-kid Lyric in season three of locally

shot AMC series The Killing, which brought international attention.

And out this week is Wet Bum, in which Stone has the starring role — and wet posterior of the title — as Sam, a 14-year-old who is tormented by the other girls in her lifeguard course.

In the film Sam’s mom (Leah Pinsent) works in a nursing home where Sam cleans the rooms, vacuuming around unresponsive residents like Judith (Diana Leblanc) and combative seniors like Ed (Kenneth Welsh). Sam practically lives in her saggy-bum swimsuit, even wears it to work under her scrubs. “It looks like you peed yourself,” snaps Ed, who seems to be struggling just as much as Sam is.

anything she needs. No one stops to consider Sam’s needs, which is why she’s such an easy target for Lukas (Craig Arnold), her older, charming swim coach.

Written and directed by Lindsay Mackay, Wet Bum is a coming-of-age tale where Sam’s angst parallels much of the frustration, confusion and fear of the nursing home’s residents. Clearly Sam’s constant protestations of “I’m changing!” are about more than just getting dressed.

“I definitely identify with Sam,” Stone says. “I think a lot of people have gone through something similar to what she’s gone through.

Hopefully they can relate to the character and learn from her.”

Sam’s only freedom is underwater in the pool: freedom from her body issues, from the jeers of others, from judgment.

There are plenty of underwater shots, so the day after a chemistry reading in Toronto Stone headed to the pool for a water audition for Mackay and cinematographer Guy Godfree. “It was kind of fun when I got into it!”

“The physical aspect wasn’t so big of a change from what I do on set every day, because every day we’re so emotionally exposed.”

It’s tough to throw yourself into being another person when as a teenager you haven’t even figured out who you are, but Stone says

“in a way, acting has actually helped me to figure out who I am” and that each character she has played has taught her something about herself.

The young actor’s sensitive approach to the role of Sam earned her a nomination as one ofTIFF’s Rising Stars last fall. But don’t expect the distinction to get her out of doing the dishes: “I try to do everything I can to help out around the house, it’s the least I can do,” she laughs. Stone says she

pestered her “hesitant” mom to start acting at an early age, and after a year of acting classes they started going to real auditions, when Stone was 11. Now mom is right up there with Meryl Streep as the people Stone most admires: “I really admire my mom: she’s one of the strongest and most loving people I know.”

After graduation Stone will be auditioning, reading (“I read a LOT”), writing (poetry, short stories) and

attending acting classes: “I don’t see myself ever not taking acting classes, I love it so much… it’s a way for me to keep building on my craft.”

And like any high school senior, actor or no, Stone dreams of travelling. “I’ve never been outside North America, so I’d love to visit some of the places in Europe: Venice, maybe.” How about a script shooting inVenice, costarring with Streep? “Yeah, that would be amazing!”

Don’t you always wonder, when you’re watching a Shakespeare play in which there are young women who dress like men in order to go adventuring, just what Elizabethan audiences must have thought?

Because society and the church forbade women from being on stage, these young female characters were played by young men: young male actors dressed up like women who dressed up like men. How convoluted is that? Women in the audience, assuming their fathers or husbands thought it alright for them to go to the theatre, must have had a very good laugh. Or been very puzzled. Or angry.

And who might have been more frustrated than Judith, Shakespeare’s youngest daughter?

“It’s against the law.”

Replies Judith (Amanda Lisman): “There won’t be an audience.”

Ah. Not yet, there won’t be. But once into it, can they resist? And can they pull it off?

With book and lyrics written by Power, music co-written by Steve Charles and directed

by James MacDonald, this is smart, funny stuff. The clandestine actors, in addition to Judith and Susanna, are Katherine (Medina Hahn), Hannah (Pippa Mackie), Margaret (Erin Moon) and Isabel (Tracey Power). Power creates the punchy choreography, too. Completing the cast, as Quiney, is Susinn McFarlen who also plays Judith’s father, William.

McFarlen is a sort of all-purpose character and except when she holds a half-mask that looks

like the Bard himself, it’s not always clear who she is — especially since the other actors take turns being Quiney. All is revealed, however, at the end. (History tells us that Judith married Quiney, by all accounts the town Don Juan, which accounts for Shakespeare writing him completely out of his will.)

Power creates seven lusty women, and in one of the early songs, Judith confesses to falling for the “broad shouldered” guy with “a pizzle” who’s playing Lady Macbeth in one of her father’s productions. “I fell in love with his ass,” she giggles and they all join in with much butt wagging while singing, “It’s the Ass.” Bonnie Northgraves (pianist) and musical director/cocomposer/bassist Steve Charles provide upbeat accompaniment.

Power neatly differentiates each character and six of the seven actors, all in different, antiquewhite garb (by Barbara Clayden) — pinafores, petticoats and bloomers — take those qualities and run with them. Cave’s

Susanna is cautious, upright; Katherine (Hahn) is full of longing for a child; Mackie’s Hannah — a bastard whose child has been taken from her — is ballsy and defiant; Moon’s Margaret is hungry for love; and Isabel is eager for life, love, adventure — she wants it all.

Hahn might bring tears to your eyes as her character mourns the loss of 14 infants and imagines them all grown up — a soldier, a midwife, a bachelor, a drunkard — before “The Truth Comes Tumbling Down,” and she sees tombstones in their place.

Power mixes it up musically from the boisterous “Keep Your Pickle in Yer Pants” to McFarlen’s heartfelt reprise of “Passion”: “If it’s passion you seek/Don’t piss it away.”

Power, who also wrote the big hit Chelsea Hotel, is dynamite on and, obviously, off stage when she’s writing and composing. She’s certainly one young woman who’s definitely following her passion and not pissing it all away.

by Tom Jones, and the classic “My Heart Belongs to Daddy” by Cole Porter. With orchestral arrangements by Steve Rawlins, choreography by David Eggers, and eight cases of costumes designed

by Wendall Goings, each routine has a completely different flavour.

While Burlesque to Broadway celebrates all things glitzy and glamourous, it also pays homage to the powerful women beneath the elaborate getups, big hair and heavy makeup.

“A lot of these women that were coming out of the ’20s, ’30s and ’40s, they were working people that used their imagination and their creativity to really become legends and to earn a living at a time when women didn’t really work,” Lemley says.

Between songs, jokes and dances, she will share pieces of real history along with stories of her own journey to showbiz success, beginning with her early years in the American Midwest. “I think I came out of the womb being a performer,” she says with a laugh. She studied opera in Bordeaux, France, and attended Interlochen Centre for the Arts in Michigan and Tisch School of the Arts at NYU

before focusing her career on Broadway, jazz and the Great American Songbook.

Lemley developed an interest in the burlesque genre while starring as Rita Hayworth in the tribute concert The Heat is On! In the 1946 film noir Gilda, Hayworth’s femme fatale character famously sings “Put the Blame on Mame” in a black strapless Jean Louis gown and matching gloves.

“It’s really one of the sexiest moments in classic celluloid because it’s a strip tease and all she does it take off one glove,” Lemley says. “It’s such a beautiful, classic dance.

And that kind of got me interested in the whole burlesque movement.”

She emphasizes, though, that while Burlesque to Broadway draws on the humour, music, dance and scanty costuming of the burlesque movement, it is not a strip show.

“This is beautiful, it’s elegant, it’s about female empowerment, it’s about using your mind and your imagination and going on a journey.”

After five years of performing her act all over North America, Lemley has a pretty good idea what people want to see.

“We’ve developed it in front of the audience and so we really know what the audiences love. They love the glamour and the sequins and the feathers and the fans and the hardhitting music and all the humour,” she says. “People after the show usually are filled with energy and they’re in a celebratory mood.”

What a difference a year makes.The last time Spoon was in town, the Austin, Texas band was previewing songs from its yet-to-bereleased album TheyWant My Soul at the poorly attended CBCMusic.ca Festival at Deer Lake Park hosted by none other than Jian Ghomeshi.

Sunday’s sold-out show at Stanley Park’s Malkin Bowl was far more of a love-in, with the band playing a wideranging set to an appreciative crowd who was already in a lather over openers Future Islands. Or more precisely, frontman SamuelT. Herring, who looked like Marlon Brando performing Hamlet’s Yorick monologue and had the audience screaming with every gyration, Russian kick, chest pound, growl and facial contortion. And while the band’s legendary performance on a certain late night talk show last year may be responsible for much of Future Islands’ growing fan base, at least one woman in the crowd wore aT-shirt proudly declaring “I Loved Them Before Letterman.”

Speaking of indie cred.

Props to the first band of the night, fellow Austin residents Sweet Spirit, who threw in an amped cover of Spoon’s “PaperTiger” to spice up its already frenetic set.

By contrast, the evening’s headliner proved once again to be masters of the slow build. Kicking things off withTheyWant My Soul opener “The Rent I Pay,” Spoon weaved seamlessly through its surprisingly deep catalogue with songs such as “Don’tYou Evah,” “Mathematical Mind,” “The Beast and Dragon Adored,” “Don’t Make Me aTarget” and “ITurn My Camera On.” Having left Merge Records and returned to the land of major labels with its latest, the songs off They Want My Soul are noticeably slicker, and offer singer Britt

Daniel a chance to put his guitar down and act the frontman, though obviously not as theatrically as his Future Islands cohort. A particular highlight was the woozy “Inside Out.” It wasn’t all perfect, mind you. “Underdog” off 2007’s Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga sounded awkward and empty without the horn section so prominent on the recording, and the piano on “TheWay We Get By” was nearly inaudible. Fans wanting to hear the peppy title track from TheyWant My Soul and the even more rocking song it references (“Jonathan Fisk”) would also be disappointed.

But Spoon made up for it with an inspired cover of the Cramps’ “TV Set,” a pulsating “Small Stakes,” the sweetly romantic “Anything YouWant” from 2001’s Girls CanTell and show closer “Got Nuffin” with Daniel singing, “When I’m with you, all my brothers, I feel like a king.” And why shouldn’t he?

He’s got a sold-out audience in the palm of his hand, his band has never sounded better, and Jian Ghomeshi is thousands of miles away, probably listening to old Moxy Fruvous records in his mom’s basement.

Five students from Kwantlen Polytechnic University Fashion Design and Technology class of 2015 are testing new boundaries with genderless and cutting edge collections.

Despite the busy schedule of these newly graduated designers, they lent their pieces to the North Vancouver School District’s Artists for Kids fashion photography program.

Lydia Waiz had a vision of lingerie made to fit full-busted women elegantly. She commented that her idea “stemmed from observing a gap in

the lingerie market. There are limited options for women with full bust sizes . . . I wanted to create a line of glamorous lingerie that would work for a wide range of bust sizes as well as look beautiful.”

The simple designs using luxurious fabrics are a nod to 1950s apparel.

Stylish and comfortable travel wear is the platform of Capri Phillips’ collection. The officeready pieces are ready to transition to different climates.

Cavell Clothiers, put together by Kimberley Parker, is inspired by classic menswear with a fit for a feminine body. These suits make women feel more confident in a busy

workplace.

Negin Izad has created a versatile, monochromatic and unisex collection, incorporating contemporary and traditional concepts to create pieces that are unique to each wearer.

Natural fibres and a conscious mind play a part in Sofia Fiorentino’s collection, No Paradigm, aimed at building a sustainable society by using fashion to let go of gender binaries. Sofia leans towards multidisciplinary work and collaborations to find inspiration. She explains, “an example is the jewelry in my line, which I codesigned with local artists Sarah and Rachel Seburn.

I am inspired by the power of the collective and social changes that promote growth.” She hopes that her line “influences people to remove boundaries in

The students in the Artists For Kids fashion photography program gathered for two days of instruction, including advanced camera techniques and the use of strobe flash units. Student models came in for a practice before the big shoot in Yaletown. One of the students, Danielle Adams from Argyle secondary, described her experience as a “great location, great people, and all together an awesome learning experience.”

Instructors Sean Clancy and Daylen Luchsinger were on hand to offer both technical support and comic relief when needed.

Mountainside student Elysia Dalgarno noted that the classroom presentation “was a real highlight.”

Hope Groen, from Carson Graham secondary,

said her favourite part of the program was being around people that are passionate about the same things she is.

When the students arrived at the Avant Garde Hair Salon at 1075 Mainland St. on Day 3, the salon was getting all of the models ready for the shoot. There was a giant painted tarp out front and students were nervous and confused. The fashion and hairstyles were nothing they could imagine; one of the models had safety pins in her hair! Jon Paul Holt, the owner and awardwinning stylist of the salon, gave the students a pep talk before they were all whisked away into the world of photography. The entire day was dedicated to fashion photography.

The students were put into a world of new experiences that they will treasure for a lifetime.

“(This program) was a great experience because I was given an opportunity and resources that I wouldn’t have been able to access on my own,” said Dana Khan, Carson Graham student.

Seycove student Alison Innes commented that she loves fashion and design.

She started looking into fashion photography, however, she couldn’t think of a way to try it out. “This program let me do what I wanted way earlier than I would have,” she said. “I feel as though I have become a better photographer and I highly recommend this program to those who get the chance to do so in the future!”

Nicole Langlais is a Grade 11 student at Argyle secondary and a participant in the Artists For Kids fashion photography program.

Where the desert meets the ocean in Baja Mexico

LORETO, BAJA CALIFORNIA SUR, MEXICO: Nobody ever gets to sleep in in the sleepy little fishing village of Ensenada Blanca. The roosters and “mad chihuahuas” make sure of that. Their morning chorus greets each day as the sun rises over the Sierra de la Giganta mountain range in Baja California Sur. Descendants of mountain goats, brought over by Spanish conquistadors in the 17th century, still roam the hillsides around the town munching on desert vegetation.

Hernán Cortés first landed at La Paz on the “Island of California” in May of 1535 but it was another 100 years before the Spanish government sent three ships with 200 men and supplies to establish a colonial outpost on the Baja peninsula.

A Jesuit priest, Juan María de Salvatierra, set up the first permanent Spanish settlement just north of Ensenada Blanca, the Misión Nuestra Senora de Loreto Conchó, in 1697. The Loreto mission went on to become the religious and administrative centre for all of Baja California. From there, the Jesuits went out to establish other settlements throughout the peninsula over several decades.

In 1768, King Carlos III of Spain, responding to information that the Jesuits were acting in their own interests, forcibly expelled them from the Americas and left the mission system in the hands of Franciscan padres who were supposedly better team players. Early in the 19th century the Baja peninsula was split into upper and lower halves with Loreto made the capital of Baja California Sur. Natural catastrophes of biblical proportions hit the desert port periodically including a massive earthquake in 1829 requiring the government to move the seat of power further south to La Paz leaving Loreto, despite its grand colonial past, a veritable backwater on the coast of the Sea of Cortez.

Even the completion of Mexican Federal Highway (carretera federal) No. 1 in 1973, linking Cabo San Lucas in the south with Tijuana in the north, didn’t change Loreto’s fortunes much in the grand economic scale of things. That’s maybe why people were caught off guard when The Villa Group bought up 4,447 acres of desert scrubland immediately south of Ensenada Blanca and started to develop a resort destination from scratch in the middle of nowhere.

“People were kind of surprised but I wasn’t,” says hotelier/developer Owen Perry, a co-founder of The Villa Group. “When I went to Puerto Vallarta in 1983 it was a very small town and when I went to Cabo in 1992 it was too, so that kind of became my specialty, I would say.”

Over the past 30 years Perry and company have developed 11 hotels in five Mexican regions including Riviera Nayarit, Cabo San Lucas, Cancun and Puerto

Vallarta. All locations provide vacation ownership opportunities as well as hotel services to non-members.

When they started working on Villa Del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto in 2011, The Villa Group brought all of their previous expertise with them.

Perry originally formed The Villa Group in 1982 with other business partners, including then-West Vancouver resident Graziano Sovernigo of the family-owned Alka Pools company. Sovernigo is now retired.

The company began marketing time-shares in Puerto Vallarta, purchased its own 131-suite vacation property, Villa del Mar, in 1984, and then built its first resort on the land next to it.

“We started in Puerto Vallarta and then went to Cabo in 1992,” says Perry. “We were in Cabo when it was probably the size of Loreto.”

Perry eventually settled in Cabo himself and used that city to oversee The Villa Group’s operations. “I would go out on weekends and travel around the Baja looking for basically the next Cabo-type thing,” he says. “One day my wife and I drove up to Loreto for a weekend and I just fell in love with the place.”

Loreto was an accumulation of everything he’d experienced in other locations. Before moving to Mexico Perry had worked in Hawaii and he saw that the Baja shared the same sublime combination of mountains and ocean.

“Puerto Vallarta’s nice because it has all these little bays you can take day trips to,” he says. “Loreto has that, plus the islands, and it has the scenery of Cabo, where the cactus meets the ocean with basically the same climate.

That’s what really attracted me to Loreto. They had all the infrastructure for what tourism needs — a brand new airport, a nice little town with a Mexican flavour and a very long history dating back to 1680. I thought all those elements together would make a nice destination.”

oceanographer Jacques Cousteau once called the Sea of Cortez “the aquarium of the world” because of the biological richness of the ocean environment.

“Cousteau convinced the Mexican government to make the islands of Loreto a state park,” says Perry. “It was the largest protected seapark in the world, at 600 nautical square miles, until Hawaii made all of their islands a protected area. Basically what that does is keep all the commercial fishermen out. And it’s amazing.You know in Cabo we still get the whales but with all the trawlers going through a lot of species have dwindled.

In Loreto they are not able to get in there and you see so much more wildlife than what you would see in other areas of Mexico.”

The Loreto Bay National Marine Park/ Marina Park Bahia de Loreto was created in 1996 and extends for over 61 kilometres (38 miles) along the coast, and 35 kilometres (21 miles) offshore. Large commercial fishing boats are prohibited from the area. Sport fishing is still allowed and in fact it is a big part of the local economy with late summer particularly busy months.

The Sea of Cortez itself was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005 with the Islands and Protected Areas of the Gulf of California citation stating that “almost all major oceanographic processes occurring in the planet’s oceans are present in the property, giving it extraordinary importance for study.”

species and 39 per cent of the world’s total number of species of marine mammals.

“With the recognition came extra scrutiny from the environmental agencies in Mexico and environmental groups worldwide,” says Perry.

“There were some areas we had to designate as conservation areas but the Mexican government also realized that the human population needed jobs and tourism does provide some good quality jobs compared to what they had there before so we found a willing partnership with the government.We complied with everything, we didn’t take any shortcuts.We abided by the rules and we think that’s good because that’s what is going to make

the Loreto area unique in the future if all that can be enforced.”

Several different species of whales spend the winter in the Baja and the Sea of Cortez where the water is about 19 Celsius in January and 30 Celsius in July.

Pacific gray whales annually migrate over 6,000 miles from Alaska’s Bering Sea to Baja California Sur with their epic trek considered the longest mammal migration on earth. At one time the species was considered almost extinct but scientists now estimate there are more than 20,000 individuals in the Pacific group.

Needless to say whalewatching is a favourite pastime in the Baja during the winter months with blue whales (the largest animals

on earth), humpbacks, sperm whales, minke whales, fin whales and orcas all swimming around the Sea of Cortez eco-system for at least part of the year.

Because of their remote location Villa del Palmar Loreto has developed with an acute environmental awareness and selfsustaining philosophy.

A desalination plant will provide the desert community with its own water source and employees go through extensive training to make sure they are a right fit for the resort.

Over 90 per cent of the employees are from outside the area and The Villa Group built a hotel in town, the Hotel Santa Fe, to house them as they start their job training. In terms of service the resort

tries to provide a little bit of everything — from Oscar Torres Torres the tequilier (a tequila sommelier born and raised on an agave plantation) to Danzante Tours director Carlos Velasco, an outdoor expert and fitness scientist who is a walking encyclopedia about the environment and your place in it. The concierge who helps you during the day will also probably be part of the cast performing in a musical at night on the outdoor stage in front of the Casa Mia restaurant.

The attention to detail has paid off as this year TripAdvisor has named Villa del Palmar Loreto one of the top 25 resorts in Mexico. “It’s a lot of satisfaction in our efforts,” says Perry. “We do put in a lot of effort and we do

look at the details — it’s not so much about spending money, it’s about providing a service. I have been very involved in Loreto and the management there.

We talk all the time.We congratulate (general manager Sixto Navarro and his staff) because they’re not phony ratings.We don’t play with them at all, that’s not our policy. If there are some bad ones along the way, it helps us to know how to get better. All the social media things are a new element and we’re learning.”

At present,Villa del Palmar Loreto features five swimming pools, tennis courts, hiking trails and the 39,000 square foot Sabila Spa right on the ocean front with access to all the Sea of Cortez has to offer.

Up next on the agenda is completion of Mexico’s only Rees Jones-designed golf course and the construction of 300 singlefamily homes (designed by award-winning Tucson architect Kevin Howard) around the course featuring spectacular ocean views.

“Rees Jones is famous as an architect,” says Perry.

“He’s not a celebrity architect. His father was a golf architect, his grandfather — they have generations of golf architects in their family.

He’s been really willing to work with us on accommodating the golf course to the terrain of the property. That’s been very interesting for us because when we open up a road and we go up in the back there we’re finding these incredible views.We just changed a couple of the back holes. “A lot of courses now make golf so hard the average player goes out there and gets discouraged.

In our conversations with Rees we want a challenging course but we want the average golfer to go out there and have a good day and enjoy it. He’s really kept an open mind about that so we’re not making these crazy holes that you have to be Tiger Woods on his best day to make a putt.”

Construction of the first model home overlooking the golf course and the clubhouse began this spring. “We’re doing a limited amount because we’re trying to conserve the open nature of the property,” says Perry. “We have some incredible home lots with panoramic views of the entire bay and we hope to start putting those on the market towards the end of this year.

Area: — There are five islands off the coast of Loreto in the Sea of Cortez: Coronado, Danzante, Del Carmen, Montserrat and Santa Catalina. Throughout the evening, a musician will tie each of the five-minute performances together, playing everything from Chopin to jazz.

When Small Stages takes the tiny platform at Ottawa’s National Arts Centre for the MNTF, Saroyan says it will be an opportunity to take advantage of the fact the performers will be in Canada’s political heartland.

Small Stages will have grown in size by this point, through the addition of some other performers from across the country who have had a relationship with the company in the past. But one thing won’t change when they all perform in the expansive arts centre: the very essence of the small stages format.

“Actually, that’s one thing I insisted on — that we cannot change the size of the stage,” says Saroyan.

Saroyan says she is fortunate for the opportunity made possible by a friend she made in the Vancouver arts circle, Brenda Leadlay, who just happens to now be MNTF’s artistic executive director. Saroyan considers Leadlay to be a “visionary whose artistic sensibilities have helped shape and guide my career.”

If Leadlay’s name sounds familiar to North Shore residents, it’s because she spent eight years as artistic director at North Vancouver’s Presentation House Theatre.

Speaking to the North

Shore News from Ottawa last week, Leadlay said being immersed in this new role has changed her definition of what theatre is.

“We are really trying to build audiences for Canadian theatre,” said Leadlay. “I’m big on taking chances and risks.”

But Leadlay insists she wasn’t taking a chance on bringing Small Stages aboard for the annual Ottawa festival that features a range of programming, including main stage events, outdoor shows and guerrilla street theatre.

“I don’t think it’s a chance, I think it’s like Vancouver, it (Small Stages) will be very popular,” said Leadlay. “I think people like consuming performances when they are in a setting that is social.”

Leadlay is effusive with her praise for Saroyan, saying she is pushing the envelope and building an audience for dance.

“I think of her as a presenter,” describes Leadlay. “Her esthetic is very strong. I think she has a strong sense of playfulness which is important.”

In the foreword to this first book published by Huck Magazine, Douglas Coupland establishes a crucial point.When we are young and could benefit from good advice we are not inclined to listen. Beneath the plastic hat made famous by Devo lurks a different façade that Mark Mothersbaugh has worn for years. His alter ego Booji Boy has been a mainstay to Devo’s live shows and has been another vehicle for Mothersbaugh’s artistic explorations.The rubber

masked Booji Boy as a plump blathering man-child provided an alternative to the theme of devolution that pervades the robotic presentation of the band.

Alternative perspectives are a pervasive theme in Mothersbaugh’s view of the world. In a time where everything is being created digitally he will embrace old-school technology.

The longest running theme in his art has been the near constant drawing of postcard-sized images.

This practice began in the early days of Devo and has not stopped. He has only recently shared this archive with anyone and now it is the centre of an exhibition of his work.

Over 30,000 illustrations represent Mothersbaugh’s visual diary. From that massive collection he has included a cross-section of those works in this book.

Susan Juby stays focused on comedy Author of young adult novels writes for readers of all ages ERIN MCPHEE emcphee@nsnews.com

If only Susan Juby had paid more attention.

Growing up on what was essentially a hobby farm outside Smithers, B.C., her family’s approach to self-sustainability proved to be more a source of embarrassment than pride for the then-teenager.

“We had chickens, and pigs and a horse and that was just sort of expected. If you had a little acreage you had some creatures on it.

There was a huge garden and a root cellar. And I took no notice of any of it,” says the Nanaimo-based author.

Reached Tuesday while on a trip to her hometown to visit family, promote her two new novels, and complete her current project, her 11th book to date, Juby recalls her teenage desire to leave the countryside behind and live in town.

When, in recent years, it became not only important, but also somewhat “trendy and chic” to live off the land, Juby tried to follow suit, though quickly realized how little she knew about the process and its inherent challenges.

However all was not lost as she went on to pen not one, but two novels centred around an inexperienced, 20-something New Yorker, Prudence Burns, who attempts to lead a self-sustaining life after inheriting Woefield Farm, a fictional derelict plot of land on Vancouver Island.

Joining her are a motley crew of equally earnest yet unseasoned farmhands, each facing their own set of personal challenges.

The first book in the series, TheWoefield Poultry Collective, was released in 2011. Its sequel, Republic of Dirt:A Return toWoefield Farm, was released in February.

It’s been a busy spring for Juby as she also released a second book this year.

The Truth Commission follows three art high school students as they try to get to the bottom of a dark secret and start a truth-telling club with dire and hilarious consequences.

Before TheWoefield Poultry Collective (and with the exception of her 2010

memoir, Nice Recovery, profiling her experiences with substance abuse from age 13 to 20), all of Juby’s novels have been geared towards young adults.

That said, her readership has continued to be an approximately 50/50 split between teenagers and adults —including for the bestselling Alice series (Alice, I Think; Miss Smithers; and Alice MacLeod, Realist at Last).The series was adapted into a television show and aired on the Comedy Network for one season in 2006.

“People over 25 would write and say, ‘I know I’m not supposed to read this but I really like it.’ Adults reading teen fiction has really come of age. A lot, a lot of adults read teen fiction now,” she says.

For teen novels, the convention is for the majority of characters to be young adults themselves with storylines centring around issues of interest to that age group, like coming of age.

Writing for adults offers more freedom, for example, in the Woefield Farm books, her main characters range in age from 11 to 70-something, and the issues they grapple with are not necessarily related to growing up, rather pertain to broader issues, like creating community.

No matter what age group Juby is writing for, her focus is always comedy.

“It’s what I love to read.

If somebody can make me laugh, I’m devoted to them for the rest of my life. It’s always been that way. I’ve always really admired funny writers. I think it’s just what I’m best at. I’m not ever going to be a hauntingly lyrical sort of writer. I’m probably always going to be much better at comedy.

I’m not sure, I think it’s maybe such a major coping mechanism for me, the funny stuff, that that’s what naturally comes out. It’s what I find appealing about writing, is putting together a scenario that is unexpected and absurd. If I can make someone laugh, I feel a job well done,” she says.

In addition to her own challenging experiences with growing her own food, the concept for Woefield Farm

was further inspired by time spent in the community the books are set in, Cedar, located just outside Nanaimo, which she came to know while boarding a horse there.

“I saw very prosperous, lovely little farms and then ramshackle, rock farms and I thought, ‘Oh, well obviously I’d have to give them a terrible farm to start with,’” she says.

Further inspiring was the book Cold Comfort Farm, a novel published in 1932

by English author Stella Gibbons.

“It’s about a young woman who goes to a farm where everyone is extremely dysfunctional and she is not a neurotic, she’s very optimistic and organized and gets absolutely everybody just dialed in and on their way. And I thought, ‘What would she look like today on a derelict farm?’” she says.

When Juby’s publisher asked if she was interested in writing a sequel to the first Woefield Farm book, she jumped at the opportunity, having a host of notes already compiled.

“It felt like that’s a story that could continue.The characters, they’re welldeveloped for me, and so I could think of all sorts of mishaps that could befall them and further adventures of, and things to explore,” she says.

When asked whether she’ll pen a third novel in the series, she says only time will tell. “I could absolutely see writing another one.

We’ll just have to see what happens,” she says.

Her most recent book, The Truth Commission, is another work geared toward young adults.

Juby teaches creative writing at Vancouver Island University and the novel contains illustrations by one of her former students, Trevor Cooper.

“As I was working on The Truth Commission I noticed that all of the visual arts students I had in my classes drew constantly. It didn’t mean they weren’t paying attention but it was a nervous habit.They were always drawing something,” she says.

One such student, Cooper impressed Juby with both his writing and his illustrations.

Thinking about The Truth Commission’s main character, Normandy Pale, Juby realized that, like her

charges, there would be no way that Pale would be able to stop herself from drawing, and so asked Cooper to come on board for the project.

“I loved what he brought to the book,” she says.

Juby enjoys her time in the classroom, finding it helps to keep her feeling inspired and enthused.

“I love seeing students find their stories and their voices. I really like being a part of that.There is still a part of me that is shocked and amazed that I’m published.Ten books in I remain shocked and amazed that somebody’s actually published me. And so I like to share that.When people write a good sentence and feel great about it, it’s a good spot. It’s wonderful to see somebody just beginning and start to improve drastically through some of the things we can teach, so that’s wonderful too,” she says.

Juby’s current writing project is a follow of sorts to The Truth Commission.

When asked about her creative process and where new and interesting characters come from, she says part of it is the result of observing the world around her.

In addition, her approach often involves looking within.

“They say that writers return to the same themes over and over. And I think most human beings have enough drives, fears, deepseated obsessions and desires to populate many, many, many books and that’s usually what is animating my characters, is something inside of me that I have not quite dealt with, or that I’m afraid of. A lot of wishful thinking — I wish I was this.

And it’s a way to explore that without having to do it in

real life,” she says.

While Juby is not a big fan of lessons and morals in stories, one of the major things she hopes to impart in her own work is a sense of hope. “And the possibility for people to find community and the power of people getting together, even the weirdest, least likely people, finding their team,

or some kind of connection with one another. Everything in there is about that. A lot of the comedy comes from trying to make that happen, rather than people being in opposition to one another, hating one another, writing one another off. Finding a way to make each other stronger and better,” she says.

whimsical in nature, the 500X’s lines are far more understated.The Fiat is also a more mature and practical version of the basic two-door Fiat 500 and is far more visually appealing than the micro-bus-looking 500L four-door that’s similar in size to the 500X. There are more grownup features to be found inside the 500X as well.The minimalist dash layout of the Fiat 500 gives way to a more elaborate triple gauge pod grouping and adjacent dominating touch-screen display that can be had in the 500X. In back it’s a tight

squeeze for three adult passengers, as you might expect considering the car’s dimensions, but total passenger volume is actually a bit more than that of the close-relation Renegade.

In nearly every other key measurement, including stowage space, it’s a dead heat between the two.

That sameness also extends to engine choices.

The starting point is turbocharged 1.4-litre fourcylinder that can be found in a number of FCA models.

It’s rated at 160 horsepower and 184 foot-pounds of torque.

skinned Animal from the Muppets and turned him into a rug. Currently, it resides at the Canadian Museum of Hope in Gatineau, Que. I sometimes feel like we British Columbians don’t fully understand the Terry Fox story. I certainly didn’t.

As a kid growing up on the West Coast, I heard the name, did the runs, saw Terry’s name on the side of schools. He was a titanic figure then, a fallen hero to be lionized and made into statues. Then, a few months ago, I heard about his van. I did a little research. I spoke to Terry’s brother, Darrell Fox. I learned I was wrong.

Few people in this province saw Terry run.

We saw him on television, sure, but we didn’t see him on the road, chipping away at the miles, going the distance. I think that if he’d made it here, to his finishing point in Stanley Park, we’d have understood better the dogged determination in his eyes.

It’s not that he wasn’t a

hero, it’s more that we lose sight of the human aspect of the Marathon of Hope.

The Ford contains all of that humanity. Certainly it did so in those first few months on the road, when Terry and his friend Doug Alward scrapped it out as they figured out their new routine. The Econoline saw Terry’s weaknesses, it held his exhausted sleeping form, sheltered him from the photographer’s flashbulbs, filled with the sweaty stink of athletic endeavour.

Quite frankly, it became a revolting rolling gym locker of a thing. There were three of them in there: Terry, Darrell, and Doug; three young men eating 1980s diner food and throwing their stinking gym socks in the corner. It was a farty, smelly, toxic, noman’s land.

That’s perfect. We like our heroes polished and perfect, ready to be cast in bronze and feted with laurels. But Terry was just a 21-year-old kid with a van, some friends, and an iron will. Sometimes he

got cranky. Sometimes he lashed out at his friends.

Sometimes he sat in the back of the van, worn out from the road, wept, and despaired.

And, as we all know, in the end he didn’t make it. West of Thunder Bay, Terry’s marathon came to an end, though the legend and the good works done in his name would continue to grow.

The van turned back.

People saw it returning and felt their hearts sinking.

Terry, Doug, and Darrell flew back to B.C., and there is an interview with the cancer agency employee who had the job of driving it East to return it to Ford.

He talks of seeing the bright, expectant looks on people’s faces, of seeing the resulting tears; in the days before instantaneous news, the returning van was the first sign people had that Terry’s marathon had stopped.

There is no better metaphor for Terry’s run; the vessel turned East, and the boy went West. His story continued, it grew

However, the van didn’t simply end up in the wreckers. The decals were removed, it was cleaned, and it went back into inventory. A family bought it as their camper, and spent a few happy summers touring around Ontario in it.

It changed hands, was bought by another family. Their son moved to Vancouver and joined a rock band. He needed a tour vehicle: the old family van? Perfect.

Thus, the Terry Fox support vehicle found itself on tour with Removal, No Means No, the Hanson Brothers, and a whole host of other Canadian rock groups. It’s here that my friend finds himself buying a tour T-shirt.

The guys call it the Terry van, and it runs without stop. In fact, the thing is so reliable they don’t bother

repainting it or changing anything. It’s all-original, though increasingly battered as the mileage mounts — 100,000 km, 200,000, 300,000.

At a party in North Vancouver, Douglas Coupland has just published Terry, a celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Marathon of Hope. The book is a collection of photos and artifacts from Terry’s early life and his run, little fragments imbued with deep meaning.

Somebody walks over and strikes up a conversation.

“You know,” they say, “Terry’s van is parked on my street.”

Say what? Coupland calls up Darrell Fox. The next morning, they drive out to a side street near the PNE. And there it is.

It took some time to negotiate a transfer of ownership — the van had other memories now for

its current owner — but eventually this relic of Canadiana came back under the Terry Fox name.

It was restored in short order, a Herculean task after so long, and made its own journey from coast to coast, giving the Western provinces a glimpse of what might have been.

It’s May. Thirty-five years ago this month, Terry would be running through Nova Scotia. It is early in the run, and not that many people know what he’s doing. Few are there to cheer him on. He gets up at four o’clock in the morning, in the silence and the darkness, attaches his prosthetic leg and starts out again, running yet another marathon day.

The van drives on ahead a few miles to wait for him.

It is quiet except for his breathing, no one around.

100 kilograms less than the Renegade’s, the numbers should be slightly better than the Jeep’s rating of 9.8 litres/100 kilometres in the city and 7.6 on the highway with the turbo 1.4.

The Sport trim level adds two more speakers to the audio system, fancier interior trim, keyless start and 17inch alloy wheels (up from 16-inch steelies).

The Trekking and Trekking Plus are designed to emulate off-road-capable vehicles and come with their own front and side body trim plus unique 17- and 18-inch wheel designs. Unfortunately they don’t appear to offer any additional trail-tackling ground clearance.

With the wide array of small-sized wagons and hatchbacks to choose from and without the polarizing looks of the Jeep Renegade, Fiat will need to push hard for the 500X to be noticed, even with style and substance on its side.
