Bâti au XIIe siècle sur un îlot artificiel entouré de trois douves et de cinq portes fortifiées, Pirou est le plus ancien des châteaux fort normands. La très vieille légende des « Oies de Pirou » rattache son origine aux invasions scandinaves. La Tapisserie de Pirou, brodée dans le style de celle de Bayeux en laine sur toile de lin, relate non sans humour la conquête de l’Italie du Sud par les Normands du Cotentin. Depuis 1968, sous l’égide de l’Abbé Marcel Lelégard (1925-1994), le château fort est en restauration. A découvrir : la boulangerie, le pressoir, la chapelle, la salle des Plaids avec la Tapisserie de Pirou du 15/06 au 30/09, la salle des gardes, la salle à manger, la cuisine et le chemin de ronde avec ses belles toitures en schiste. Nouveautés 2008-2009 : Nouveau circuit de visite et aménagement de la cour intérieure.
Built in the 12th century on an artificial island surrounded by three moats and five fortified gateways, Pirou is the oldest of the Norman castles. The very ancient legend of the “Geese of Pirou” traces the origins of the castle to the Viking invasions. The Pirou Tapestry, in the style of the Bayeux Tapestry, is embroidered in wool on a linen background and relates – not without humour – the conquest of southern Italy by Normans from the Cotentin peninsula. Restoration of the fortress was begun in 1968 under the aegis of Abbé Marcel Lelégard (1925-1994) and is still continuing. Not to be missed: the bakery, the cider press, the chapel, the tapestry hall with the Pirou embroidery (from 15th June to 30th September), the guardroom, the dining room, the kitchen and the rampart walk with its handsome schist roofs. New in 2008-2009 : New visitor circuit and restoration of the inner courtyard.

Visites / Visits • Ouvert du 05 février au 30 septembre et du 15 octobre au 29 novembre, tous les jours sauf le mardi de 10 h à 12 h et de 14 h à 18 h 30 (17 h d’octobre à mars). • Open from the 5th February to the 30th September and from the 15th October to 29th November, every day 10am-noon and 2pm6.30pm (5pm from October to March). Closed on Tuesday.
