En 2001, la Normandie a initié avec « Normandie Qualité Tourisme » la première démarche qualité territoriale reconnue par l’État dans le cadre de la marque nationale « Qualité Tourisme ». Les deux logos que vous découvrez à la lecture de cette brochure constituent donc pour vous un gage de confiance. Le niveau d’exigence et les procédures de contrôle sont comparables. Lorsqu’un établissement bénéficie des deux marques, nous ne mentionnons que le logo « Qualité Tourisme ».

In 2001, Normandy introduced with “Normandy Quality Tourism” the first territorial quality approach recognized by the French government within the framework of the national brand “Quality Tourism”. Both logos which you discover to the r eading of this brochure thus constitute for you a reliable security. The level of requirement and the procedures of control are comparable. When an establishment benefits from both brands, we mention only the “Quality Tourism” logo.

Cinéma Circulaire Unique dans la région, au cœur des plages du Débarquement, Arromanches 360° est le 3e cinéma circulaire en France.

Le film, “Le Prix de la Liberté”, projeté sur 9 écrans dans une salle circulaire, mêle images d’archives filmées en juin 1944 par les correspondants de guerre et images actuelles tournées aujourd’hui sur les lieux rendus à la paix.

Avec la projection à 360°, vous serez plongés au cœur de l’action, parmi ces combattants du Jour-J. Vous voguerez le long des pontons du port artificiel, survolerez la Pointe du Hoc et débarquerez à Omaha Beach.

Cinema in the Round Unique in the area, and surrounded by the Normandy landing beaches, Arromanches 360 is France’s third circular cinema. The film ‘The Price of Freedom’, projected onto 9 wraparound screens, combines newly released footage from war correspondents’ archives filmed in June 1944 with present-day images shot in the same, now peaceful, locations. The 360º projection will plunge you into the heart of the action, among the D-Day combattants. You will draw alongside the Arromanches pontoons, swoop over the Pointe du Hoc and come ashore at Omaha Beach. An experience to make you see, understand and reflect...

Ce musée a été construit sur le site même où fut implanté le port artificiel dont on peut encore voir les vestiges à quelques centaines de mètres du rivage. Le “Mulberry” nom de code du port est une oeuvre gigantesque due à l’idée de W. Churchill. Ce port qui fut le plus important du monde pendant la bataille de Caen, approvisionna les troupes engagées dans la bataille de Normandie. Maquettes animées, diorama, vidéo aident à mieux comprendre l’incroyable défi technique que furent la construction et la mise en place du port artificiel.

The museum was built on the very site of the artificial harbour, the remains of which can still be seen a few hundred metres out from the shore. ‘Mulberry’, the code name for the harbour, was a gigantic project that arose from an idea of Winston Churchill’s. The harbour, which was the biggest in the world at the time of the battle for Caen, enabled provisions to get through to troops fighting the Battle of Normandy.

Working models, dioramas and videos all help one to fully understand the incredible technical challenge behind the construction and assembly of the floating harbour.

Ouvert en 2006, le Scriptorial d’Avranches est un passage obligé pour l’amateur désireux de connaître les secrets du Mont Saint-Michel.

Laissez-vous guider par le parcours original et interactif de ce lieu contemporain conçu pour tous, petits et grands. Il vous permettra de découvrir le contexte historique de fabrication des manuscrits, la diversité de leur contenu. Grâce à une muséographie dynamique et originale vous voyagerez au cœur des manuscrits du Mont, véritable patrimoine national. Au terme de votre ascension ludique, vous découvrirez les fabuleux manuscrits à l’abri dans leur écrin baptisé le trésor. Le Scriptorial fait aussi la part belle au livre aujourd’hui, de l’imprimerie au livre électronique. Il présente trois expositions temporaires par an et propose des ateliers autour de l’écrit, de la calligraphie et de l’enluminure ainsi que des cycles de conférences thématiques. Evénements 2009 : Été 2009 exposition temporaire “Lumière sur le Ciel”.

The Avranches Scriptorial, opened in 2006, is a must for the enthusiast who wishes to learn the secrets of the Mont Saint-Michel. This highly original, interactive circuit in a contemporary setting has been designed to appeal to all age-groups. You will discover the historical background to the production and translation of manuscripts, and through a series of exciting and unusual displays delve into the Mont SaintMichel manuscripts, truly a piece of our national heritage. Your enjoyable journey will lead you gently upwards until you come to the fabulous manuscripts themselves, tucked away in the superb setting of the Treasury. The Scriptorial also celebrates the modern book, from its printed to its electronic form. There are three additional temporary exhibitions each year, as well as regular workshops covering the written word, calligraphy and illumination, and a series of themed lectures. Events in 2009: Summer 2009 - temporary exhibition on “Light on the sky”.

Ce château, construit par Mansart à partir de 1631 et propriété de la famille de Balleroy jusqu’en 1970 est acquis par le célèbre éditeur américain, Malcolm Forbes. Passionné de montgolfières, il y crée le premier musée international sur l’aérostation; Depuis son décès en 1990, ses enfants poursuivent son œuvre.

Aménagé dans des dépendances du château, des documents uniques et objets retracent l’histoire de l’aérostation des frères Montgolfier à nos jours.

Le château harmonieusement meublé présente également une importante collection d’œuvres de grands peintres.

Les jardins à la française et le parc agrémentent la visite du site.

The Château and the Museum of Hot Air Ballooning. The construction of this château by Mansart was begun in 1631 and it remained the property of the Balleroy family until 1970 when it was acquired by the famous press publisher Malcolm Forbes. A true lover of hot air balloons, Forbes decided to create the first International Museum of Hot Air Ballooning on this site. Since his death in 1990, his children have taken on his work and continued the tradition.

Unique documents and unusual objects are displayed in the château’s outbuildings relating the history of ballooning from the Montgolfier brothers to the present day.

The elegantly furnished château also displays an important collection of paintings by well known artists.

Completing the visit are the French style gardens and the park.

Cette broderie de laine de couleur sur toile de lin de 70 m de long relate les préparatifs, le début de la conquête de l’Angleterre par Guillaume Le Conquérant et la bataille d’Hastings.

Pour mieux apprécier ce chef-d’œuvre, les visiteurs sont invités, après avoir admiré la Tapisserie originale, à suivre un parcours didactique composé de documents sur l’histoire du chef d’œuvre, les secrets de sa fabrication et la construction navale viking etc… maquettes et personnages mis en situation rappelant ce qu’il advint de l’organisation sociale et politique de l’Angleterre sous le règne de Guillaume Le Conquérant ; enfin un film (15 mn) apportant une bonne synthèse historique nécessaire à une meilleure connaissance et appréciation du chefd’œuvre.

The embroidery – of coloured wools on linen, and measuring 70m in length by 0.5m wide – recounts in 58 scenes William of Normandy’s preparations for the conquest of England and its early stages up to the Battle of Hastings.

After an initial viewing of the original embroidery, and in order to fully appreciate this masterpiece, the visitor is invited to follow an educational circuit taking in documents on its history and the secrets of its composition, on Viking boat-building etc... Scale models and life-size characters in their context illustrate how social and political organisation evolved during William the Conqueror’s reign. Finally, an illuminating film lasting 15 mins gives the historical background to this great masterpiece.

Situé à quelques minutes des plages du Débarquement, le Musée Mémorial de la Bataille de Normandie de Bayeux, première ville libérée au matin du 7 juin 1944, présente, une évocation unique et exhaustive des combats s'étant déroulés sur le sol Normand du 7 juin au 29 août 1944.

Sa scénographie alterne le déroulement purement historique avec les secteurs thématiques, un film d'archives de 25 min et une présentation de matériel et d'uniformes d'époque venant illustrer le propos, tout ceci permettant de mieux appréhender le considérable effort de guerre consenti au cours de cette bataille décisive pour la reconquête de la liberté en Europe.

Just a few minutes from the D-Day landing beaches, the Battle of Normandy Memorial Museum at Bayeux – the first town to be liberated on the morning of June 7th 1944 - now offers a unique and complete coverage of the fighting that took place in Normandy from 7th to 29th August 1944.

The presentation combines portrayal of the historical events with thematic displays, a 25 minute film of archive material and a graphic collection of period equipment and uniforms, all of which help the visitor to understand the huge concerted war effort underpinning this battle for the restoration of liberty in Europe.

Exceptionnel château de style baroque Louis XIII bâti de 1633 à 1640, entouré d’un parc de 80 hectares dessiné par La Quitinie, assistant de Le Nôtre à Versailles.

La transparence de l’architecture, son reflet dans les miroir d’eau et les bassins, font du château, et de ses douves, agrémentées de jets d’eau un ensemble harmonieux, complété d’un étonnant labyrinthe de buis.

Le château abrite une exposition permanente consacrée à l’art de la reliure depuis le XVIe siècle et une remarquable bibliothèque.

Bookbinding Museum The superb Louis XIII baroque style chateau was built between 1633 and 1640 and is surrounded by an 80 hectares park designed by La Quitinie, assistant to Le Notre at Versailles.

The reflection of the chateau in the grounds’ many water features provides a most stunning sight. Fountains and a box tree maze add to the harmony of the scene.

The chateau houses a permanent collection dedicated to the art of bookbinding from the 16th century. This is complemented by a substantial library.

Situé dans le château ducal, le Musée de Normandie illustre l’évolution des hommes sur le territoire de toute la Normandie, des origines à nos jours.

Les salles du rempart, aménagées dans le volume restitué d’un cavalier d’artillerie du XVIe siècle, accueillent les expositions temporaires. Le public peut y observer le rempart, un souterrain et approcher les vestiges d’une forge et d’une maison du XIVe siècle.

Conçu comme un moyen simple et agréable de découvrir ou redécouvrir une des grandes régions européennes, le Musée de Normandie se veut un lieu de culture ouvert à tous.

Housed in the ducal castle, the Musée de Normandie depicts human evolution throughout the whole Normandy region, from its origins to the present day.

Temporary exhibitions are displayed in rooms beneath the rebuilt 16th century artillery terrace. The public can see the ramparts and the souterrain or underground passage, and get a close view of a 14th century forge and house.

Designed as a simple and pleasant way to discover – or rediscover – one of Europe’s great regions, the Musée de Normandie is a place of culture open to all.

Construit vers 1060 par Guillaume le Conquérant pour abriter son palais résidentiel, le château ducal est l'une des plus vastes enceintes fortifiées d'Europe. Tour à tour résidence princière, forteresse, caserne, le château de Caen est aujourd'hui un carrefour culturel. De nombreux monuments du Moyen-Âge (Echiquier des Ducs de Normandie, Église SaintGeorges, Porte des Champs) côtoient le Musée des Beaux-Arts et le Musée de Normandie.

Le rempart nord récemment restauré, surmonté d'un belvédère accessible par ascenseur, permet des vues nouvelles sur la ville et le château.

Constructed around 1060 by William the Conqueror to protect his residential palace, the ducal castle is one of the most extensive walled fortifications in Europe. In turn princely residence, fortress and barracks, the Château de Caen is today a cultural hub. Numerous medieval monuments (Exchequer of the Dukes of Normandy, the Eglise St.Georges, the Porte des Champs) stand close by the Musée des Beaux-Arts and the Museum of Normandy. Visitors can take a lift to the belvedere on the top of the recently restored north rampart, for unaccustomed views of the town and the castle.

Originally designed for defence, the construction of this all-brick château with its wet moat spanned the 14th to the 16th centuries. An elegant pavilion was added at the entrance. The furniture, dating from the Renaissance to the Restoration, is original, and there are numerous family portraits.

The château is set in a 24 acre park.

The superb 17th century wrought iron gates are still in their original position.

All-year-round events include exhibitions, a musical festival, candle-lit tours and hunt festivities. Request the year’s programme at the beginning of the season.

The Juno Beach Centre, the only Canadian museum on the Landing Beaches, explains the role of the Canadian military and its civilians on several fronts during Word War II, as well as various aspects of contemporary Canadian life. Museum, cultural centre and place of commemoration, the Juno Beach Centre pays homage to Canada’s war effort at home and on the front. Its titanium exterior reflects the Norman sun and the use of wood in the main lobby of the museum evokes the importance of Canadian forests. A very innovative space both in design and approach to remembrance: a journey into the past with strong links to the present day.

An authentic site.

Among the many fortified sites that existed in Normandy in the Middle Ages, Crèvecœur is a unique example of a small manor that has been miraculously preserved.

The medieval castle, surrounded by a moat, has conserved its original twopart layout: on the earth mound, the manor-house is protected by a series of fortifications, while the chapel and halftimbered farm buildings are grouped together in the outer bailey.

The exhibitions present the medieval history of Crèvecœur, the half-timbered buildings restoration and the adventure of the Schlumberger brothers.

Le château actuel a été commencé en 1578 par Henri de Guise et Catherine de Clèves et terminé par la Grande Mademoiselle, cousine du roi Louis XIV en 1665.

Au XIXe siècle, il devient la résidence d’été du roi Louis-Philippe qui y reçut deux fois la reine Victoria. Comprenant aujourd’hui le musée Louis-Philippe, le château garde le souvenir de ses propriétaires successifs à travers ses collections de meubles, de vaisselles, de tableaux et de ses intérieurs reconstitués. Des pièces comme les salons, l’office ou la salle à manger, font du château d’Eu un lieu de vie et de découverte des arts décoratifs du XIXe siècle. La galerie des Guise, actuellement en restauration, ne cesse pourtant de surprendre les visiteurs grâce à son plafond à caissons et sa galerie de portraits. La roseraie et le petit parc sont également ouverts au public.

The present château was begun in 1578

by Henri de Guise and Catherine de Clèves, and finished by La Grande Mademoiselle, cousin to King Louis XIV, in 1665.

In the 19th century it became King Louis-Philippe’s summer residence, where he was twice host to Queen Victoria. The château now houses the Musée Louis-Philippe, and commemorates its successive royal owners in its collections of furniture, tableware and paintings, and in its restored interiors. Drawing rooms, the pantry and the dining room etc give a sense of what life was like in the château, and a picture of 19th century decorative arts. The Guise family gallery, currently under restoration, always amazes visitors with its coffered ceiling and its collection of portraits. The rosegarden and the small park are also open to the public.

Lieu de naissance de Guillaume Le Conquérant, le château est doté d’une enceinte de pierre avant l’An Mil : améliorée et aménagée jusqu’au XVe siècle, elle abrite les deux donjons anglo-normands du XIIe siècle et la tour ronde bâtie par les architectes de Philippe-Auguste vers 1207.

La chapelle romane, disparue en 1944, est matérialisée par une installation végétale ; l’ancien logis vicomtal est devenu le bâtiment d’accueil.

Le parcours audio-visuel dans les donjons raconte l’histoire de la Normandie médiévale, celle de Guillaume et celle de ses successeurs : images, projections, maquettes, musique et textes narratifs (dont une version « enfant ») plongent le visiteur dans ce passé prestigieux.

The château was the birthplace of William the Conqueror. Its outer walls date from before 1000 AD. They were improved and modernized right up to the 15th century, and enclose the two 12th century Anglo-Norman keeps and the round tower built by the architects of Philippe-Auguste around 1207. The position and shape of the Romanesque chapelle, destroyed in 1944, are indicated in the lawn; while the former residence of the viscount has become the public reception area.

An audio-visual trail leads one through the keeps, telling the story of medieval Normandy and of William and his successors. Pictures, videos, models, music and printed texts (including a children’s version) carry the visitor back into this glorious era of history.

La maison au crépi rose où vécut Claude Monet de 1883 à 1926 a retrouvé son décor d’autrefois.

On peut y admirer la collection d’estampes du Maître, le vaste atelier des Nymphéas qui abrite la Boutique de la Fondation.

Les jardins ont été reconstitués à l’identique : le Clos Normand aux tracés rectilignes propose du printemps à l’automne la palette changeante d’un peintre jardinier “fou de fleurs“.

Plus bas, le Jardin d’Eau avec son célèbre Pont japonais, ses glycines, ses azalées, son étang est redevenu cet écrin de ciel et d’eau qui donna naissance à l’univers pictural des nymphéas.

Visitors can admire the master’s collection of Japanese prints and the huge Waterlies studio which now houses the Foundation’s shop.

The gardens have been replanted as they once were: from Spring to Autumn, the rectangular Clos Normand garden displays the ever-changing palette of colours of the painter-gardener who was ‘mad about flowers’. Lower down, the water garden with its famous Japanese bridge, wisteria, azaleas and pond has once more become the jewelbox of sky and water which inspired the vivid universe of the waterlilies.

La principale vocation du Musée des Impressionnismes Giverny est de mettre en lumière le caractère international du mouvement impressionniste, en particulier de la colonie de Giverny ou encore de la Vallée de la Seine. Le musée s’intéresse à l’histoire de l’impressionnisme, le post-impressionnisme dans son ensemble, et ses suites plus lointaines dans la seconde moitié du XXe siècle.

Giverny est une étape essentielle dans un parcours impressionniste de la vallée de la Seine. C’est aussi un jalon crucial dans l’histoire du passage de l’impressionisme à l’art du XXe siècle. A ce double titre, le village de Giverny est un lieu de mémoire. Sa situation aux confins de l’Île-de-France et de la Normandie à mi-chemin de Paris et de Rouen est en effet idéale pour constituer l’étape principale d’un parcours impressionniste.

Giverny is an essential stop for anyone following the Impressionist trail in the Seine valley. It is also a crucial landmark in the story of the journey from Impressionism to 20th century art.

Giverny is thus of two-fold historic importance. Its position on the borders of the Île-de-France and of Normandy, half-way between Paris and Rouen, are bound to make it the main stopping-off point on the Impressionist trail.

This most unusual site aims to bring together around Christian Dior’s multi-faceted personality a number of very different collections including both high fashion and ready-to-wear models designed by Christian Dior for the House of Dior label: shoes, hats, jewellery, perfume bottles - and many accessories by other designers and fashion illustrators, artists and painters (René Gruau, Bernard Blossac, Christian Bérard). The villa is surrounded by a well-preserved early 20th century “artist’s garden” on a clifftop overlooking the sea.

NEW: Set in the garden of Christian Dior’s childhood home, a tea-rooms with views of the sea and the Channel Islands will be open during the temporary exhibition devoted to Marc Bohan, fashion director of the House of Dior from 1960 to 1989.

L’abbaye fondée en 1145 par Guillaume Paynel, seigneur du lieu, fut occupée par une communauté de moines bénédictins du XIIe à la fin du XVIIIe siècle.

Le site compte parmi les ensembles monastiques médiévaux les plus complets de Basse-Normandie.

Au sein d’un paysage préservé, la vallée de la Sienne, le visiteur découvre des bâtiments conventuels parfaitement restaurés comprenant la sacristie, la salle capitulaire, joyau de l’art gothique normand, le parloir, le scriptorium, les bâtiments agricoles et la cuisine. La porterie, la maison des convers et les ruines de l’église abbatiale sont également sauvegardés et valorisés.

Des expositions, des ateliers d’art, des concerts et des colloques animent ce haut lieu d’histoire. (Demandez le programme.)

The abbey was founded in 1145 by Guillaume Paynel, the lord of Hambye.

A community of Benedictine monks lived here from the 12th until the 18th century.

The main characteristic of this monastery is its traditional style between Romanesque and Gothic architecture.

Today, the church is in ruins but the rest of the abbey has been restored with great care. It includes the chapter room, the scriptorium, the parlour, the sacristy, the kitchen and the farm buildings. The lay-brothers’ building and the entrance gate have been carefully restored.

Many events such as exhibitions, concerts and conferences, bring this historic site to life.

April to September 2009: “From prayer to the fields: the temporal and economic life of a medieval abbey”, an exhibition as part of the programme celebrating the thirteenth centenary of the founding of the Mont-Saint-Michel.

C’est un peu Notre-Dame de Paris à la campagne! Notre-Dame de Jumièges fut la plus haute église de son temps en Normandie. Ses tours, d’une hauteur de 46 mètres, dominent toujours les boucles de la Seine. Les destructions consécutives à la Révolution française n’ont rien enlevé de sa majesté à l’ancien domaine abbatial, dont les pierres se marient à la riche végétation du parc environnant. C’est une véritable leçon d’histoire et d’architecture que l’abbaye délivre à travers plus de 10 siècles de construction, du IVe au XIXe siècle, avec, comme joyau, le chefd’œuvre d’art roman normand qu’est l’abbatiale.

Depuis le printemps 2002, les « Nocturnales » permettent une visite de nuit du site somptueusement mis en valeur par un spectacle de lumière dynamique.

Notre Dame de Jumièges was the tallest church of its time in 11th century Normandy. The towers which are still intact dominate the Seine Valley landscape. The Abbey estate whose splendid stonework blends in well with the rich local vegetation still retains its majestic atmosphere despite the damage incurred after the Revolution.

The Abbey provides a major insight into history and architecture from the 10th to the 19th century. Norman romanesque art is combined here with the neo-gothic style of the more recent sections of the construction, the 14th century adding its note to the abbey church of Saint Pierre. The « Nocturnales » opened in the spring of 2002, is a night time visit of this superb site with an outstanding light show.

Fondée au XIIe siècle, l’abbaye de La Lucerne était occupée par des chanoines prémontrés. Cet ensemble roman, d’esprit cistercien par sa sobriété et sa rigueur, est dominé par une tour anglo-normande qui annonce l’architecture gothique. Depuis 1959, sous l’égide de l’abbé Lelégard, l’abbaye bénéficie d’une restauration importante.

The Abbey of the Lucerne, founded in the 12th Century, was home to Premonstratensian canons.The romanesque edifice, Cistercian in its sober simplicity, is dominated by an Anglo-Norman tower which hints at the Gothic architecture to come.Since 1959, under the aegis of Abbé Lelégard, the abbey has benefited from an important restoration.

Also of great interest are the porter’s lodge with its courtroom and bakehouse, the church with its ribbed vaulting which shelters 5 recumbent effigies of the 12th, 13th and 14th Century, the refectory, the storeroom, the park, the abbatial lodging house and its stretch of water, the dovecote.

A gallery of light.

Thanks to the museum’s superb position facing the sea and to the openness of its design, light was one of the main considerations, and indeed the major challenge, in the restructuring of the building. The gallery has always had a close association with the principal Impressionist works of the Normandy coastline and light remains the most important aspect of both the building and its exhibits. The Malraux’s permanent collection centres around works from the 17th to 20th centuries while temporary exhibitions add yet another dimension to the appeal.

The Haras du Pin is the first example of 18th century equestrian architecture.

The fresh young grasslands were to become the cradle of horse breeding in France. The stud to this day still has 30 stallions of 10 different strains destined for breeding. This site combines modern breeding techniques with the traditional craftsmanship associated with the equestrian world.

The guided tour of the stud gives visitors an insight into the two very distinct periods of horse breeding activity: the reproductive period and the non-reproductive period.

The Stud Farm’s discovery trail provides an opportunity for visitors to deepen their understanding of the equine world.

Every Thursday from June to September at 3 p.m., a show with commentary is given on the stallions and horse-teams in the main courtyard of the Pin Stud-Farm and certain Tuesdays in Summer.

Né en 1900, Jacques Prévert découvre la Hague au début des années 1930.

Depuis toujours, il aime la mer, les ports, les bouts du monde. Il a 70 ans lorsqu’il achète cette maison, dénichée par son ami Alexandre Trauner, décorateur de cinéma. Il disparaît le 11 avril 1977 et repose dans le petit cimetière d’Omonville-la-Petite.

Cueilleur de mots et colleur d’images, parolier de chansons et écrivain de cinéma, Prévert a laissé derrière lui une œuvre foisonnante. La collection présentée dans sa maison illustre son étonnant parcours artistique : éditions originales, livres d’artistes, mais aussi les collages, méconnus du public, qui disent à merveille la vivacité de son esprit.

Dans la pièce principale, l’atelier, le visiteur s’imprègne de l’atmosphère dans laquelle il travaillait. Un film permet de découvrir les moments clés de sa vie. Chaque été, une exposition temporaire présente une facette de l’œuvre de Prévert, en particulier ses collaborations avec les grands artistes de son temps.

Born in 1900, Jacques Prévert discovered La Hague in the early 1930s.

He had always loved the sea, ports and far flung places. He was 70 when he bought this house, located for him by his friend Alexandre Trauner, the film set designer. Prévert died on 11th April 1977 and is laid to rest in the little cemetery of Ormonville-la-Petite.

As an artist in words and images and as a lyricist and screen-writer, Prévert has left an extraordinarily rich legacy. The collection on display in his house illustrates his amazing artistic career: original editions, livres d’artiste, and also little-known collages which brilliantly express the liveliness of his mind.

In the main room, the workshop, the visitor can absorb the atmosphere in which Prévert worked. A film depicts the key moments in his life. Every summer there is a temporary exhibition devoted to an aspect of Prévert’s work, especially his working associations with the great artists of his day.

Bâti au XIIe siècle sur un îlot artificiel entouré de trois douves et de cinq portes fortifiées, Pirou est le plus ancien des châteaux fort normands. La très vieille légende des « Oies de Pirou » rattache son origine aux invasions scandinaves. La Tapisserie de Pirou, brodée dans le style de celle de Bayeux en laine sur toile de lin, relate non sans humour la conquête de l’Italie du Sud par les Normands du Cotentin. Depuis 1968, sous l’égide de l’Abbé Marcel Lelégard (1925-1994), le château fort est en restauration. A découvrir : la boulangerie, le pressoir, la chapelle, la salle des Plaids avec la Tapisserie de Pirou du 15/06 au 30/09, la salle des gardes, la salle à manger, la cuisine et le chemin de ronde avec ses belles toitures en schiste.

Nouveautés 2008-2009 : Nouveau circuit de visite et aménagement de la cour intérieure.

Built in the 12th century on an artificial island surrounded by three moats and five fortified gateways, Pirou is the oldest of the Norman castles. The very ancient legend of the “Geese of Pirou” traces the origins of the castle to the Viking invasions. The Pirou Tapestry, in the style of the Bayeux Tapestry, is embroidered in wool on a linen background and relates – not without humour – the conquest of southern Italy

by Normans from the Cotentin peninsula. Restoration of the fortress was begun in 1968 under the aegis of Abbé Marcel Lelégard (1925-1994) and is still continuing.

Not to be missed: the bakery, the cider press, the chapel, the tapestry hall with the Pirou embroidery (from 15th June to 30th September), the guardroom, the dining room, the kitchen and the rampart walk with its handsome schist roofs.

New in 2008-2009 : New visitor circuit and restoration of the inner courtyard.

Le Mémorial Pégasus, inauguré le 4 juin 2000 par le Prince Charles, est dédié aux hommes de la 6e Division Aéroportée britannique.

Leur mission la plus spectaculaire était de prendre le Pont sur le canal de Caen à la mer, dans la nuit du 5 au 6 juin 1944. Ils devaient ensuite tenir le flanc oriental de la zone du débarquement pendant 10 semaines.

Le musée expose plusieurs centaines d’objets, de photos et souvenirs historiques et émouvants; casque et béret rouge du Major Howard, la cornemuse de Bill Millin...

Le célèbre Pégasus Bridge d’origine, 1er pont libéré de France continentale, sauvegardé et restauré, est maintenant installé dans le parc du Mémorial Pégasus.

The Pegasus Memorial, inaugurated on the 4th June 2000 by Prince Charles, is dedicated to the men of the 6th British Airborne Division. Their most spectacular mission was to take the bridge over the canal from Caen to the sea during the night of the 5th June 1944. They then had to hold on to the eastern flank of the Landing zone for 10 weeks. The Museum houses several hundred exhibits as well as photos and historical and very moving souvenirs such as the helmet and red beret belonging to Major Howard and Bill Millin's bag-pipes. The famous original Pegasus bridge, the first bridge in France to be liberated, has been saved and restaured and is now on show in the Memorial Pégasus.

Le Musée Airborne est implanté dans un parc de 3 000 m2.

The Musée Airborne stands in a park of 3/4 of an acre.

The first building, in the shape of a parachute, houses a WACO glider in original condition, as well as numerous display cabinets containing contemporary documents, first-hand accounts from GIs, weapons, ammunition, equipment, a torch of liberty etc… In the second building, shaped like a delta wing, you can see a Douglas Type C-47 ‘plane which dropped parachutists and towed gliders during Operation OVERLORD. There are a large number of full-size models in period costume on display, as well as personal souvenirs donated by American veterans. You can also see our original 20-minute film “Fight for Freedom”, and take your time using the interactive panels to find out all about the liberation of Sainte Mère Eglise and the Battle of Normandy.

L’abbaye Bénédictine fut construite au XIIe siècle sur un site où se succédèrent depuis le 1er siècle av. JC plusieurs édifices dédiés aux cultes paien puis chrétien.

L’abbatiale du plus pur style roman normand frappe par l’harmonie de ses lignes et sa grande luminosité.

La salle capitulaire, fin XIIe, présente un remarquable ensemble de statuescolonnes et chapiteaux historiés; le bâtiment conventuel du XVIIe a conservé ses plafonds de pierres voûtés.

Le jardin à la française restauré d’après des documents d’archives du XVIIe siècle, offre un exemple unique dans la région de jardin monastique avec potager, verger, parterres et bosquets.

The Saint Georges Abbey The Benedictine Abbey was built during the 12th century on a site where many buildings dedicated to pagan and Christian cults formerly stood.

With its Romanesque style, the Norman abbey’s most striking aspects are the the harmonious and luminous qualities of its architecture.

The chapter house dating from the end of the 12th century is remarkable for its collection of columnar statues and capitals. The monastic building (17th century) has still its original ceiling of arched stonework.

The garden in the French style has been restored after research in the 17th century archives and offers a unique example in this region of a monastic garden with its potager, orchard, formal beds and groves.

Concerts and exhibitions are held in the abbey. Programme on request.

L’Ile Tatihou est dominée par la silhouette massive de la Tour Vauban, sentinelle de pierres et joyau de l’architecture militaire côtière, édifiée sur les plans de l’ingénieur Vauban. À quelques encablures, de l’autre côté de la baie de Saint-Vaast, la tour de la Hougue, perchée sur son promontoire la renforce pour protéger cette belle rade que Vauban définissait comme : “la meilleure et la plus sûre du royaume”. Depuis le 7 juillet 2008, ces deux tours sont classées au patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO, signe de qualité d’un patrimoine d’exception. Au fil de la découverte, les murs racontent l’histoire de la bataille navale de la Hougue, des marins en quarantaine, de chercheurs, d’enfants en “redressement” et offre à la découverte des jardins, une réserve ornithologique et le musée maritime classé “Musée de France” qui assure la conservation et la mise en valeur de collections archéologie sous-marine et d’ethnologie maritime.

The island of Tatihou is dominated by the massive silhouette of the Tour Vauban, the stone sentinel and jewel of coastal military architecture designed by the engineer Vauban. A few cables’ lengths away, on the other side of the Saint Vaast bay, the tower of La Hougue perched atop a promontory defends this beautiful natural harbour which Vauban called ‘the best and safest in the realm’.

Since 7th June 2008, these two towers have been listed as UNESCO world heritage sites, a mark of exceptional heritage value. Their walls recount the story of the naval battle of La Hougue, of sailors in quarantine, of scientists, of children sent for ‘rehabilitation’. They also shelter gardens, a bird sanctuary and an important maritime museum responsible for conserving and displaying submarine archeology and maritime ethnology collections.

Le château séduit d’abord par la qualité et la diversité architecturale de ses façades. Des souvenirs du chancelier de Miromesnil (1723/1796) et de la naissance de Guy de Maupassant (1850) agrémentent la visite des salons.

Le potager fleuri maintient la tradition d’un jardin nourricier et une collection de clématites s’épanouit sur les murs qui le protègent. Une petite chapelle décorée avec raffinement au XVIIIe siècle se cache dans la vaste futaie de hêtres qui abrite cet ensemble entretenu avec amour par la même famille depuis un demi-siècle.

The quality and the diversity of the façades of the chateau are of special architectural interest. Souvenirs relating to the Marquis de Miromesnil (1723/1796) and the birth of writer Guy de Maupassant (1850) add to the appeal of visiting the salons.

The floral kitchen garden perpetuates the tradition of producing flowers, fruit and vegetables for the house. A collection of clematis grows among roses and espalier fruit-trees on the brick walls surrounding it. A tiny chapel, beautifully decorated in the 18th century, is hidden among the spectacular belt of mature beech trees which surrounds the whole estate, a residence lovingly cared for by the same family for more than sixty years.

Le Château, (ISMH), est aujourd’hui un Centre d’Art renommé qui présente d’importantes expositions de peinture et de sculpture, renouvelées chaque printemps, été et automne.

Nombreuses animations ponctuelles diverses en saison. (Programme annuel sur demande). Membre des Routes Historiques Normandie-Vexin et des Maisons d’Écrivains et du club des Parcs et Jardins de Normandie.

Vascœuil où Michelet (1798-1874) écrivit pendant 20 ans, notamment sa grande fresque “l’Histoire de France”, consacre à l’historien, un musée unique en France, dans une dépendance du XVIIIe siècle. Son cabinet de travail a été reconstitué à l’identique au sommet de la tour octogone du château (XIIe).

Le site, classé et inscrit, comporte un magnifique colombier du XVIIe siècle (ISMH) avec son système d’echelle tournante d’origine et un exceptionnel parc de sculptures, avec en permanence plus de 50 bronzes, marbres, céramiques et mosaïques des plus grands artistes modernes.

The chateau (a listed historic monument) is now a centre for the arts renowned for its large exhibitions of paintings and sculptures, renewed each spring, summer and autumn. Numerous happenings during the season. (Annual programme on request). Member of Normandy-Vexin’s Historic Routes, Writers’ Homes and Normandy’s Parks and Gardens. Vascœuil is the place where the historian Michelet (17981874) did most of his writing for 20 years, most notably his volume “The History of France”. The only museum in France to be dedicated to the historian is housed in an 18th century outbuilding. At the top of the château’s 12th century octagonal tower, his study has been reconstructed exactly as he would have known it.This listed site includes a magnificent 17th century dovecote (with its original rotating ladder system) as well as a sculpture park with its permanent display of some 50 sculptures in bronze, marble, ceramic and mosaic, by some of the best known modern artists.

Construit en 1740 par Contant d’Ivry pour le maréchal de Belle-Isle, le Château est célèbre pour ses écuries inspirées de Versailles.

Demeure des petits-fils de Louis XIV et de madame de Montespan puis du roi Louis Philippe, ses intérieurs présentent des salons renommés pour leurs boiseries Régence, tapisseries de Gobelins et souvenirs du Maréchal Suchet, ancêtre des propriétaires actuels.

Le Parc, de style classique, est agrémenté de jeux d’eau : fontaine de Gribouille, escalier d’eau, bassin orné de chevaux marins, pédiluve.... Sous Louis Philippe, il est en partie redessiné à l’anglaise et planté de grands arbres.

The chateau was built in 1740 by Contant d'Ivry for the marshal de BelleIsle and is known for its stables which were inspired by those at Versailles.

It was the residence of the grandsons of Louis XIV and Madame de Montespan and later home to King Louis Philippe.

The interior of the chateau is renowned for the Regency wood panelling in the formal rooms, the Gobelin tapestries and the memorabilia of marshal Suchet, ancestor of the present owners.

The classical style gardens are enhanced by water features such as the Gribouille fountain, the cascading steps, the sea horses, the pool ...

Under King Louis Philippe the park was partly redesigned, landscaped and planted with huge trees.
