NORLEY’S NEW PARISH CLERK Norley Parish Council has now appointed a new Parish Clerk Gaynor Hawthornthwaite, who has lived in the village with husband, Les and her son and daughter for over 24 years, having moved from Lymm.

Gaynor says that We found our current house in Norley “purely by accident”.

We were trying to find our way to Tarporley and came across a show house that was for sale on High Street”. We were immediately attracted to the property and to the village, which for such a small place, seemed to have a lot going on and would be a good place to live.

My son and daughter, both now at University, grew up in Norley and attended the toddler and playgroup before attending the Primary School. They took part in many of the activities that were on offer in the village, such as the Junior Badminton Club, Beavers, Rainbows, Brownies and we spent many hours down at Norley Tennis Club. It is good to see that many of these groups are continuing today (but not the tennis club, alas).

Gaynor brings a wide range of Local Government experience to the role of Parish Clerk, having work in Democratic Services for large Borough councils and Parish Councils for 21 years.

Growing Tips 1. Sunflowers can be grown directly in the soil or in a pot.

2. Sunflowers like plenty of sun choose a nice sunny spot.

3. Protect your sunflower seedling from slugs and snails by surrounding it with a plastic bottle with it’s top cut off.

4. As your sunflower grows bigger you will need to support it’s stem. Use a bamboo cane or a sturdy stick and loosely tie; make sure the support is nice and long!

5. Water regularly and feed occasionally. Make your own homemade liquid fertiliser from nettles or comfrey.

A small optional donation to the foodbank can be made at the shop, for those who wish to make one.

We are asking families to grow the tallestsunflowerand keepusupdated in future editions. There will be a mystery prize for the winner.

41 Club Members were delighted this month to receive presentations from our two chosen charities for last year.The Joshua Tree and St Luke’s Hospice. Sara Wheater and Rachel Mellor respectively, explained the work the charities do and their plans for the future. The work they do is inspiring and members were very happy to be have been able to help them, even in a small way. Of course the thanks don’t stop there – the money we were able to collect came from residents of local villages, including Norley.

So thank you all. We had passed the funds on some time back, but took the opportunity to formally present to the charities, as you will see.

This was also our AGM, and we elected a new Chairman for 2017-18, Trevor Gleave.

Congratulations Trevor and thanks to all who have supported me during my year.

We are putting together a new programme now.

Care from the Air! Tony Bent, a volunteer for the Cheshire Air Ambulance service, gave a fascinating and interesting talk at March’s Norley WI meeting.

The annual cost to run the 3 helicopters that form the Cheshire Air Ambulance is a staggering £4.2 million and this huge amount is raised through donations.

The service is a financially independent charity, not supported by government funding.

The aircraft are stationed at Preston Royal Hospital, Wythenshawe Hospital and Barton Aerodrome. They are not stationed at an international airport because air ambulances have precedence over all other air traffic, whether landing or taking off. And if you have ever wondered why they are yellow, that is because the AA used to sponsor them.

Cheshire Air Ambulance flies an impressive 1000 missions per year; that makes a daily average of 8 to 10 emergency flights, covering over 500 square kilometres. They fly during daylight hours only and are land-based, so carry out no sea rescues. They are on duty 365 days a year.

The purchase of an aircraft plus conversion into an ambulance would cost nearly £5 million (!), so all three air ambulances are actually leased from Bond Air and not owned by Cheshire Air Ambulance. They fly at 160 miles an hour, can land on a 17.5 degree slope and – so Tony assured us – could easily land on a space the size of the village hall. The equipment they carry is exactly the same as that of a road ambulance, but for one very important difference - the vacuum mattress.

The aircraft is subject to wind changes and thus sudden movements; these could cause or increase potential spine injuries.

Apart from their medical training, the medics also have undergone training in meteorology, navigation, communication with police and NHS and a lot more.

It takes the pilots only 5 minutes to do the preflight checks and get the aircraft in the air and from wherever the accident is they can reach the nearest hospital within 11 minutes.

Over the years Cheshire Air Ambulance has saved hundreds of lives; what an amazing achievement.

Hill Top Play Area Norley Hill Top Play Area voluntary organisation have recently been successful in securing a £10,000 grant from #tescobagsofhelp for essential repairs to the wet pour safety surface. They rely heavily on fundraising and grants to keep the play area maintained and open for the users.

This grant was beyond their wildest dreams - it would have been very difficult to raise that kind of money using the usual avenues.

The play area is managed by a small committee of 8 volunteers who are always grateful for funds to help with maintenance. They say they can't thank @ Tesco North enough. They would also like to pass on their thanks to everyone who has given their time and / or money to the playground fund.

The organisation is asking users to help come and bed in the sand on top of the new flooring, by walking around on it! Happily there is an amount left over after the flooring had been paid for. This will be used to re-landscape the area outside the fenced playground.

The families of Norley look forward to many more years enjoying the space and would like to thank the managing group for their hard work.

A MONTH OF DEFINITE MAYBES

Phil Gifford- Chair of Norley Wildlife Group (NWG) 01928 78721 A swarm of bees in May is worth a load of hay, a swarm of bees in June is worth a silver spoon, a swarm of bees in July isn’t worth a fly.

It’s now nearly five years since I related in the Norley News the old saw about hiving a swarm, as when there is likely to be a good nectar flow it’s a “guarantee” of both honey and beeswax, whilst

by July you can forget it. Swarming is both a benefit to, and a risk to, beekeepers. Like many other propitious events its better for them to happen at the right time, rather like pregnancies! In mid-April Cheshire beekeepers received warnings that, early though it was, swarming could be imminent.

The false spring in March and amazingly warm days in April have since been blighted by bitingly cold winds. But as in 2012, the warm sunny days elicited a dramatic surge in the activity of the bee s, spilling out of their hivesto bring back pollen, nectar, propolis (resins/gums) and water. Avid readers will recall that water is needed to dilute the honey so it can be fed to the larvae (baby bees). All this has enabled the brood (the bee nursery) to increase dramatically.

However, cold wet wintry weather, if as in 2012 it persists for weeks, means that this vital food becomes in very short supply. In these awful springs it can get so bad that the brood either starves or can’t be kept warm and you can find their pathetic little white corpses flung out on the lighting board.

So we are in “maybe”land at the moment - will they swarm will they hunker on down and await warmer times, or just make lots of lovely honey? As Sam Goldwyn is reputed to have said “It’s a definite maybe!”

I’ve given all the hives extra room to expand and fed them a pollen substitute, just to ensure the brood is kept fed even if the weather remains wintry.

But conditions can change so quickly. Drones (male bees) are already present, one of the basic necessities for swarming. As once the swarm has gone (old queen with most of the flying bees), fit mature drones have to be ready and waiting for the mating flights of the virgin queen left behind. They assemble in the lee of a hill or trees about 40 foot off the ground, where, as described by the celebrated Gilbert White (The Natural History of Selborne), you can often hear the huge cloud of insects with their particular droning buzz. They are also giving off more pheromones than any teenager doused in Lynx, attracting any virgin queen from miles around and she in turn is giving off clouds of “come and get me”pheromone. She flies through the mass of drones which in turn fly after her, now using their huge eyes to track her. The “lucky” one who catches her, ejaculates with such force it kills him.

The Queen may mate with around 14 more fated suitors on several flights until her spermotheca are brim full with over 10 million spermatozoa. This will allow her to lay up to 2000 fertilised eggs a day for many years, being cleaned and fed by a constant retinue of devoted workers (her daughters).

Drones lead a dismal life far less fun than at Bertie Wooster’s eponymous club. In the hive the workers chivvy them about using them as draught excluders or furry hot water bottles; in flight many, acting as decoys for the precious queen, are consumed by birds. Then if they survive without the mortal instantaneity of marital bliss, at Summer’ s end they are dragged out of the hive by the workers to perish in the cold. A somewhat different slant on the Handmaidens’ Tale!

Other queen bees have already been equally busy, though less deadly for the male species. All through April I’ve been watching the huge bumblebees looking for suitable nest sites. I’ve put in a Norley News | May 2017 | norleynews@mail.com

“flowerpot” nest at the small mound at the Memorial Garden (see last month’s edition in Norley News for details) but to date no activity has been seen, and I am loath to disturb it.

Solitary bees are also much in evidence collecting pollen and on the lawn there are little mounds of fine soil showing where their nests are. These are most likely the nests of Miner bees, Andrena spp, but as yet I haven’t been able to see any bees emerging.

As Shakespeare’s sonnet tells us “Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, And summer ’s lease hath all too short a date ”that we, like all of Norley’s wildlife, must make the most of the summer as all too soon the newly arrived swallows and martins will be lining up on the wires ready to depart once more for Africa.

May incidentally, refers to Hawthorn blossom (Cratageus) and is the only British flower to be named after the month in which it flowers. If it’s warm enough the blooms will produce a nectar in quantities sufficient to make a delicious almondy flavoured honey. When the bees are collecting pollen from hawthorn it’s an olive green colour.

Pollen colour is amazingly varied and its hues from red to black, green, yellow, orange and blue are quite incredible. The honey can often taste like the flowers, but it’s whilst they are ripening the nectar to make honey that the smell of the flowers visited by the bees is most in evidence. Remember the bees from a single hive have visited over a quarter of a million flowers in just one day.

During a good nectar flow, workers at the entrance of the hives are furiously fanning, moving warm moist air out of the hive. In the evening especially, the smells are redolent of the flowers that the bees have visited. Throughout the night you can hear a constant roar as the nectar is converted into honey. The activity is so intense that in the morning you can often find little pools of condensed water at the entrance.

May blossom will make a very good flavoured liqueur using brandy and sugar and some recipes use the blossom to flavour a white wine (eg Sauvignon blanc), sometimes then with a little sugar steeping for 24 hrs or so.

A PARLIAMENT INDEED!

A crow in a crowd is a rook; a rook on its own is a crow – so the old saying goes. I had noticed for first time rooks feeding on the fields next to our house and wondered where they were nesting.

Needn’t have wondered long, as I found that they have started nesting in the “Wildwood” next to the church. I ’ve counted eight nests there already. It’s been suggested that some injudicious tree felling elsewhere in Norley had effectively evicted the rooks but to date I don’t know where this had taken place. The noise they make is amazing, incessant cawing, well-deserving their collective name. I feel for the residents of the Old Rectory!

CYCLAMEN GALORE! A very generous donation by the Norley Horticultural Society towards our Cyclamen fund, to which our parish council has already contributed, means that we can now plant over 500 Cyclamen hederifolium at the Memorial garden and about a hundred or so Cyclamen coum in the churchyard. Helena Wiesner, the lady who runs the nursery, has also very kindly offered to send us both types of seed free of charge.

Women’s Business Network Cheshire 20 Cheshire women – owners of small businesses - gathered in Norley Village Hall on 15th March, at the inaugural meeting of the Women’s Business Network Cheshire. The group was launched by two Norely businesswomen; Kelly who runs interior design firm White Wolfe and Michelle who runs a Utilities Warehouse agency.

and wine. There was a good atmosphere from the off – with members swapping phone numbers, or agreeing to meet for coffee afterwards. Some members may seek each other out as customers – the wide benefit to all of using local services is already becoming clear.

The next meeting will be held on the 15th June, at the Red Bull Kingsley. This will have a marketing theme. The intention is to keep venues relaxed and informal.

Many Network members are local to the Norley area but also as far away as Runcorn, Northwich and Chester. Growth of the fledgling group so far has been largely organic – friends of friends - but the group has been quick to realise the potential of social media too. Its Facebook page has 80 members only three weeks after its launch, and the Network is active on Twitter. One member asking a question in the days after the meeting received 28 helpful comments.

Why is a new network for women needed? Kelly says, “We looked at the other networking groups around. They were expensive, and not as well suited to the needs of women running small businesses.”

The group is, she says, about supporting and educating its members. “Many have need of a safe supportive environment where they can ask the questions they need to ask – how can I get the best from social media, my website, etc. Where do I get a promotional tee shirt made? How can I gain the confidence to charge proper rates for the work I do?”

This first meeting took the form of a marketplace, where member’s could display the things they make and do. There was the opportunity for discussion too, as well as nibbles

Our Aims: “Creating a supportive environment for our members to grow their businesses. And a bigger Network too – one big enough to run daytime events for working mums – who might bring their children with them. There is a real need.”

“We want to attract people who aren’t sure about attending a network! Give it a try. Meetings are cheap and pay as you go – no long-term commitment. You will find the Network is social and supportive.”

I was glad to see that the latest planning application from Forest Holidays went before the planning committee recently and was refused.

This was following the continuing hard work of members of local group CADD and many others who actively oppose the unpopular scheme. I was delighted that the Councillors on the planning committee voted unanimously against the proposals and refused the application.

This represents a further setback for the Forestry Commission in their attempts to forever change Delamere Forest.

PARISH COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES

The Parish Council met on 29th March. This was the first meeting attended by new Clerk, Gaynor Hawthornthwaite. The Council welcomed her to her first meeting.

Some routine matters had been dealt with: a new grit bin on Gallowsclough Lane was installed, the street light on Blakemere Lane fixed, though now we had to report one on Maddocks Hill not working, as well as ongoing flooding issues there. Double yellow lines at Hatchmere had been approved subject to CWAC consultation and their speed review on Blakemere Lane was ongoing.

Ecology reports had been requested by CWAC on the plans for the old Jewish School, but progress was being made.

A number or routine planning matters were considered, using projection equipment to make up for lack of paper plans from CWAC from now on. There was a good deal of discussion around an application relating to Oak Tree House, regarding a Change of Use application. The Parish Council had submitted its objections to the plan, which it felt would enable the creation of a separate dwelling without regard to the requirements of Norley’s Neighbourhood Plan.

YourVillageHallNeedsYOU! The Norley Village Hall Caretaker is retiring in the next couple of months, so we need someone to take on the job. Duties include setting up heating for users in the week, checking the building and other caretaking activities.

Objections were also made to a request for outline permission for two dwellings, garages and vehicle access on Crabmill Lane.

The Council appeared not to have even made aware of another application to replace a bungalow on Fingerpost Lane with three smaller dwellings. It saw the plans for the first time at the meeting, but these seemed on the face of it to be a welcome development and the Parish Council would say so.

Norley Book Club

OUR BOOK OF THE MONTH “Us” By David Nicholls Nicholls excels at exploring the essence of personal relationships as in “One Day” which examines the fluctuating emotions of the central couple over twenty years. In “Us”, however, he concentrates on a family: Doug, Connie and their son, Albie. Doug is trying hard to rescue his marriage and the surly teenager, Albie, seems to be doing his best to push his parents apart, being indulged by his doting mother as his exacting, wellintentioned father makes every effort to discipline him.

In flashbacks we are told of the history of the family and how such a seemingly mismatched couple came together.

In the present, though, Doug’s wife and son see him as the cause of all their problems. He is charged with being repressed, predictable, tediously punctual and an incurable worrier; his job as a biochemist centres on the study of the fruit fly! However, as Doug is the narrator of the story, the reader comes to have total sympathy with him, sharing his frustrations with his more emotionallydriven, artistic wife and irritatingly selfish and indifferent son who tend to exclude and reject him in spite of all his efforts to please and understand them. Some pleasure can even be derived from directing feelings of anger and annoyance at Connie and Albie on behalf of poor, long-suffering Doug.

All this seems quite heavy and depressing, but Nicholls treats his contrasting characters and their exploits with such wit, humour and sincerity that the reader becomes gripped and thoroughly entertained whilst recognising, through the author’s skilful observations, uncomfortably familiar life experiences and relationships. It is about US and ranges from laugh-out-loud to tear-jerking in a matter of paragraphs.

The present day plot covers the family’s Grand Tour of Europe, planned, ironically, to be enjoyed together before Albie flies the nest for college. Many tourist details of European cities, their art, culture and accommodation are included, so if you wish to visit Paris, Amsterdam, Florence, etc. here is an added bonus to enjoy.

The ending, for me, was disappointing, but no spoilers offered. Suffice to say that it felt rushed and frantic and not the ending I wanted.
