Norley Resident Honoured Huge congratulations to Dr Vanessa Mayatt on receiving her OBE this year as part of Her Majesty’s 2016 Birthday Honours List. I had the chance to congratulate Vanessa and ask her about the day she was presented with her award by The Prince of Wales. I also was able to find out about the work that earned her the accolade.

How did you feel about receiving your Royal accolade for your outstanding contribution to public and animal health?

I am very proud, it is a great honour. It is very nice to have one’s work recognised in this way.

How were you informed about receiving the honour?

I received a letter from the Cabinet Office in April last year. I was sworn to secrecy about the honour until it was officially announced in

June in the London Gazette. The Cabinet Office letter asked me to write back to the Prime Minister to confirm acceptance of the honour. I then heard nothing until the official announcement.

Where were you presented with your OBE? I was invited to attend an investiture at Buckingham Palace.

My date was the 3rd of February and I, like the other recipients, was allowed to take three guests.

You all have to arrive together with the formal invitations and photo I.D. If you arrive by car the police search the vehicle prior to entry to the Palace grounds. Entry to the Palace is by a wonderful red carpet from the Palace inner courtyard.

Recipients are then separated from their guests for separate briefings.

My briefing took place in the Picture Gallery, which is a gorgeous long, narrow room with fabulous works of

art by painters such as Rembrandt and Canaletto. My investiture was held by The Prince of Wales. While everyone was presented to him, the Countess of Wessex’s String Orchestra played a lovely range of music. How were you guided in your briefing?

You have to wait at the entrance to the Ballroom until the Prince has concluded with the person before you.

You then enter the Ballroom and wait beside the Lord Steward who chats with you while you wait. You are then announced, walk forward, turn to face The Prince of Wales, curtsey and walk towards him. He then pins the honour on you. He asked about my work and said he recognised how important it was. He finally shakes your hand, then you step back, curtsey and exit the Ballroom.

What happens at the end of the ceremony?

Prince Charles with the Officers on Duty walks the length of the Ballroom, smiles at the recipients and leaves. You can then mingle and chat with the other recipients while filming before assembling for photographs in the Palace courtyard. We then summoned a taxi and went off for a celebratory lunch with my husband Phil, step son Jamie and close friend and colleague John Davies MBE. Vanessa has had a long and illustrious career – she has been a member of several boards of organisations dealing with public and animal health and has established her own risk management consultancy.

She is currently the only woman trustee board member at The Pirbright Institute in Surrey (a charity and limited company) that focuses on infectious diseases of livestock. While she has had positive support from many peers and colleagues throughout her career, she recognises the need to encourage more girls and young women to aspire to the board room and to aim for work at higher levels in science, charity and business. Vanessa recognises the lack of women at higher levels in organisations as something of a problem. This despite the fact she feels she has been readily accepted into the senior roles she has taken on, as evidenced by the OBE she was nominated for by her peers.

We had an interesting discussion on the subject of women in science, on which Vanessa has strong views. Contributions of women scientists are now being better recognised; pioneering cell development based on Henrietta Lack’s cells, scientist Rosalind Franklin who made significant contributions to the understanding of the molecular structure of DNA. Vanessa feels the latter would have been a worthy Nobel Laureate.

The Pirbright Institute is a world leading centre of excellence in research and surveillance of viruses in farm animals and viruses that spread from animals to humans. The Institute works to improve the understanding and control of viruses such as foot and mouth disease.

Early in her time at Pirbright,Vanessa commissioned an independent review to look at the way the Institute managed health and safety and bio-safety risks. She now chairs a board sub-committee set up following the review to examine the management of risk within the Institute. The Pirbright site continues with its major redevelopment plan to construct new laboratory facilities and install up to date equipment.

One of Vanessa’s aspirations is to work in the equestrian field. She is a regular rider around Norley’s lanes on her horse, Hilda. 15 years ago she took part in a 5 day ride across the Egyptian desert from Edfu to Luxor, raising £75,000 for The Brooke Hospital, a working equine charity initially set up to rescue horses who were abandoned in Egypt after World War 1.

We are sure all readers will wish to join us in congratulating Vanessa on the receipt of her honour.

Spooky goings on at this month’s meeting when we had a presentation from North West based ghosthunters Ghanon.

Kevin and Julian of Ghanon both approach this controversial subject from a sceptical frame of mind. They use careful observation, planning and note-taking to investigate sites that they think might be haunted. Sometimes these are private commissions, sometimes they are sites they have heard about themselves.

What was quite clear was that real life is very different to TV programmes like Most Haunted.

They do not go in for Ouija Boards and table tipping; just observation, sound and video recording. And some surveys take a long time.

For example, they spent 11 years visiting a school in Birkenhead that was due for demolition. While the vast majority of “vigils” provide no evidence, they have experienced some phenomena that they cannot explain, including at the school. The talk included some of the sound recordings that they have made; others can be heard on their website - www. ghanon.org.uk. Before they left the Tigers Head, they had time for a brief chat with Tracey about some things seen and heard there!

Charles Hardy, proprietor for the Old Fire Station Chocolate Shop in Tarporley, had the full and undivided attention of the Norley WI members when he gave his interesting talk about the History and Making of Chocolate at January’s meeting.

Chocolate is made from the Cocoa beans that grow on the trunk of the Cacao tree, explained Charles. The Cacao tree is indigenous to Central and South America, however, now it is being grown in equatorial countries around the world.

He told the members that the Mayans of Central America are believed to be the first to discover cocoa as early as 900 AD. Mayan chocolate was very different to the chocolate we know today.

It was a liquid made from crushed cocoa beans, chilli peppers and water. (There was no sugar in Central America.) They poured the liquid from one cup to another until a frothy foam appeared on top. In fact, The word ‘chocolate’ is said to come from the Mayan word ‘xocolatl’ which means ‘bitter water.’ In fact, cocoa beans became very valuable and were used by the Aztecs and Mayans as money. Having a pocket full of beans was like having a wallet full of cash. As far as they were concerned, money really did grow on trees.

The first chocolate bar as we know it today was made by the Bristol company Fry & Son in 1847. It was made from a mixture of cocoa powder, sugar with a little of the melted cocoa butter that had been extracted from the beans. Using this method meant that the bar could be moulded.

What an interesting talk and how yummy were the truffles we were given to taste!

On the plus side birds that flew into Norley on those frigid winds included waxwings and bramblings.

These handsome birds are welcome winter visitors like siskins, fieldfares and redwings. Flocks of the latter devastated the holly berries in the run up to Christmas. However, temperatures then soared and days later I was watching honeybees rifling a Lenten rose for its pollen.

I saw too endearing long-tailed tits like little pinkish balls on a stick flitting through a birch tree feverishly searching for food. The poet John Clare call ed them bumbarrels! “And coy bumbarrels twenty in a drove.

And hang on little twigs and start again” This old English name comes from their almost spherical barrel-shaped nests. I found an old one last year; it was a cunning weave of moss, lichen spiders’ webs and feathers with a little “elastic ”hole.

BULBS Rather anxiously NWG have been checking for snowdrops, 5000 bulbs having been planted last year. The signs are pretty good with the lovely little flowers showing all around the village. All we need do now is to mark where they have flourished and plant the remaining 5000 bulbs this autumn. The show will only get better and better if we follow Edward Augustus Bowles’ famous advice to “Stir them up regularly”and split them up after they’ve flowered every three years or so,. I was very pleased as well to watch honeybees visiting the snowdrops, rather aptly with a faint honey scent. So by providing an early feed of nectar and pollen they are both useful as well as beautiful.

Daffodils by now will be in full bloom, though some varieties like Early Sensation have been flowering since January; the ones at the Memorial Garden and Crabmill Lane will look especially fine. All our work there removing leaves and pernicious weeds has done them all a world of good.

The Bluebells we planted in the “Wild Wood“next to the church are showing too, as are others around the village. The ones in the wood are natives, hereas many of the others are Spanish or its hybrids. You can tell the difference as the natives have narrow leaves, usually about 1cm or 1.5cm wide and deep blue (sometimes white, but rarely pink) and have narrow, tube-like flowers with white creamy pollen and the very tips curled right back. The flowers have a distinct, sweetish scent and are mostly on one side of the stem only and always drooping at the top.

CWAC we won’t succeed. So it was a little reassuring that the rubbish we collected last year has now been removed.

Spanish bluebells however have broad leaves often 3cm wide and paler, blue conical or bell-shaped scentless flowers (quite often pink and white ones too), with spread-out tips all round the upright stems Their pollen is usually blue (although the hybrids will vary).

BIRD & BAT BOXES The six nest boxes and the two bat boxes put up in the wild wood last year are still awaiting occupation.

It’s obviously early days and it may take a year or more for the bat boxes to be used. We shall keep an eye on them and report back. Please don’t go to have a look yourselves as bluebells do not take kindly to being trampled and this may be one of the reasons they have declined so dramatically here.

I am very pleased to report that the Mid Cheshire Barn Owl Group has installed two boxes in fields adjacent to the wood. Though its counting owlets before they have hatched, we have high hopes of seeing the parents hunting for voles in the coming months.

MEMORIAL GARDEN We have already done a lot of work here stablishing the wildflower meadow. Although we had undertaken to provide material about the history of the garden and its flowers and pollinators, the Parish Council (PC) was unwilling to pay for an information board so we shall make do with more modest encapsulated sheets instead. However, on the plus side, so as to extend the flowering season the PC will fund our trial of some autumn flowering cyclamens; though not strictly native they are a very welcome sight, and a valuable source of pollen.

BREECH MOSS I mentioned in the last edition that we had asked the PC to agree CWT’s plan for Breech Moss to conserve it to at least damp woodland, but to date we have had no response. It could be a place of great beauty and a haven for wildlife; somewhere that is cherished and valued. We are willing to do our bit as we have already done, but without the commitment and assistance from both the PC and Norley News | March 2017 | norleynews@mail.com

BADGERS Readers will recall that early last year an application for a badger culling licence was submitted for the first time in Cheshire. We are still in the dark as to whether it will be granted and whether culling will start. Sir David Attenborough, a President Emeritus of The Wildlife Trust, opposes the controversial practice and has said “An expansion of the badger cull to new areas, against the recommendations of scientists and before the completion of a four year trial cull, is surely a bad idea.”Sadly, whether or not Norley badgers are under threat from shooting, our speeding cars are still doing DEFRA’s job with reports of two dead badgers in the village. One was very young and, if the other like last year, was nursing young, it will have even more tragic results.

I will try to find out the latest position and report in the next edition.

HEDGEHOGS Despite it being our most beloved wild animal there has been an appalling decline in the number of hedgehogs in Britain from nearly 37 mil lion in the 1950s to about 1.5 million in the 1990 ’s with a commensurate drop since then. We are still investigating whether we can give a home to displaced hedgehogs but in the meantime we can try and help the few that are still h anging on. Two have been sighted - one close to Kingsleigh Close, the other up by Maddocks Hill.

The CWT website has lots of tips as to what we can do, like not using slug pellets which will poison them and making our fences hedgehog friendly so they can get from one garden to another.

HABITAT MAPPING One of NWG ’s priorities is to carry out habitat mapping in Norley. This will help fill in the blanks in the neighbourhood plan so as to strengthen the drive to establish wildlife corridors and to head off ill-considered speculative developments in Norley.

The new government strategy for housing has undoubtedly fuelled a lot of this speculation and it is worth looking at CWT ’s website.

On its part NWG will do its utmost to protect our exist ing wild places, create new areas, actively strengthen nature networks and incorporate the natural environment into the fabric of any new developments for the benefit of wildlife and the people of Norley.

The teachers and school staff are amazing. They work hard to make sure all children get the education they deserve and have fun learning. We are supported by parents and wider families and value

What do you like about our school?

I like that our school is still a small, village school that is in the heart of the community and that we take part in all the same things as the bigger schools – and can achieve awards like the Sportsmark Gold. We are very friendly and all the staff are approachable. Friendship is a key word, we value our friends and there is a close family feeling in our school. Recently, when I asked children from each class what they liked about our school, a common response was that their lessons were fun, they felt safe and were part of our school family.

our partnership that enables children to make good progress in school. At Norley CE Primary we have a great team of parents known as the PTFA (Parents, Teachers and Friends Association). They have a relentless drive to raise money to be spent on the children. Currently their focus is on improving the outside area, specifically the pond area. This area has turned into an outdoor classroom and the children love being in there. The PTFA organise great fund raisers including discos, camping nights, cake decorating and raffles. We are lucky to have the support of such dedicated parents and friends.

What do you want for our school?

I want our school to be a happy place where children love learning. One of our straplines is ‘Happy Hearts, Enquiring Minds’. I know we are one of the best primary schools in Cheshire, when we compare our results, but more than that children need to be happy and to enjoy learning. OUR BOOK OF THE MONTH “Belgravia” By Julian Fellowes For those who are mourning the end of “Downton Abbey” some comfort may be found in enjoying this recent novel by the creator of that successful television series. Originally published in appropriately Victorian serialised form, this tale is very likely to become the basis for a future televised or film version (as in “Gosford Park”) such are Fellowes’ skills in plot, setting and intrigue.

The main historical background here is early Victorian London, but with a few introductory chapters set in Brussels on the eve of the Battle of Waterloo. Initially, the reader is invited into the legendary great ball of the Duchess of Richmond with much detail of the lavish occasion, but with melancholy reminders that many of the soldiers in attendance are due to die at the hands of Napoleon’s army. Throughout the novel a number of actual historical personages appear or figure in the background, adding to the interest of the read.

growth in London and, on a lighter note, fashions in dress, furnishings and the introduction of the afternoon tea. As one of the main characters is a self-made man, the class and social conflict between the nouveau riche and the titled nobility is central to the novel. As one would expect, the life below stairs also has an essential part to play in moving the action forward.

The plot is predictable, but fast-paced with many dramatic twists and turns to urge the reader on; scandal, secrets, romance, ambition and intrigue are among the ingredients to relish. The characters are rather clichÈd and stereotypical, but do demand the reader’s sympathy as the conflict between the heroes and villains grows and, in spite of Fellowes’ tendency to over explain his characters’ action and emotions, this is a memorable and compelling read.

A Mouse’s Tale Kingsley Youth Group enjoyed their evening at Kingsley Players’ performance of ‘A Mouse’s Tale’ - script and music by Norley’s Arnold Ashbrook, directed by Lynn Pegler. We particularly enjoyed spotting our friends and fellow youth club members in the cast.

Country Mouse Timothy, with an Einstein IQ, spends his time wondering about the universe rather than, like the other mice, getting on with his work. Deemed worthless, he is exiled.

Coming to the big city, he falls in with ruthless entrepreneurial Town Mice Charles and Amandapie, who exploit his naivety to make and sell his inventions (mainly an early warning system for the approach of Claudia the cat, who is wrong-footed time and again as the machine warns the mice of her arrival). In a lovely song she laments her reduced ‘success rate’ contrasting her roles as evil mouse catcher and pampered pet.

Charles and Amandapie’s ‘Catastrophic Corporation’ makes Timothy’s devices, ruthlessly exploiting their employees and pocketing the proceeds. In one scene Town Mice work exhaustedly on an unforgiving production line reminiscent of Fritz Lang’s ‘Metropolis’.

Reporter Rebecca Rat arrives on the scene, sniffs ‘a rat’, interviews the exploited mice, brings Timothy’s beloved sister from the countryside and opens Timothy’s eyes to what is going on. Charles and Amandapie are unmasked, the workers are rewarded and promised proper working conditions, and Timothy is re-united with his sister and friends. Claudia returns, having been injured by dogs as she escaped from the laundry basket she had been held in and helps catch Charles and Amandapie. Now she knows what it’s like to be hunted and in fear of her life and she promises never to hunt the mice again.

The costumes were lovely: the Country Mice wore shabby, rustic apparel; Charles and Amandapie wore some very flash clothes, getting flasher the richer they got. Performances were great too; gestures made by the ‘mice’ were very entertaining: hands held like paws (wrists bent, fingers pointing down) scratching behind mouse ears ingeniously incorporated into hats and headdresses. Claudia was energetic and feline and Rebecca looked and acted every part the slightly dodgy, if well-intentioned, journalist.

Kingsley Youth Group will be making a beeline to see Kingsley Players’ production of Cinderella in December .

I live in one of the new houses in Kingsleigh Close. I have a dog. It’s lovely taking him out for walks with my children, but I’m afraid to say other dog walkers aren’t always picking up their dog poo.

Recently, I noticed a number of instances where dog poo had been left on the pavement outside people’s houses in the village.

This may have been an innocent mistake of forgetting to bring a dog bag. Surely though, you’d go back and clean it up, I know I certainly would. I just think it’s very unfair if residents who perhaps don’t own a dog themselves are having to clean up after some careless dog owner(s).

Just last month my 2 uncles were involved in a serious accident at this junction and were lucky not to be killed. One uncle was in intensive care for 2 weeks and is just starting rehab now.

There have been 7 incidents at this junction in the past 2 months.

Council discussed a range of issues; they approved spending for the Norley Wildlife Group to plant cyclamens at the newly improved woodland near the church and agreed arrangements for looking after the small green area outside the shop.

On traffic calming in Norley, studies were taking place throughout the village, but disappointing delays continued in CWAC around the planned yellow lights at the Chinese restaurant crossroads.

There were issues around Common land to discuss – the Council was appeased that the rubbish from Breech Moss had been moved. It would be good to see if the drainage to the site could be improved.

There were a couple of planning applications – none were controversial. It was noted that there would be no paper plans sent to Councils in the future by CWAC – the Council would experiment with using an overhead projector.

Sifting had taken place for the Clerk post and the clerk was able to report that a number of documents had been loaded onto the Council website. The Council reappointed its auditor.

It was a shame to see no members of the public present this month. Next meeting is on 29th March.
