NATURE & LIFE IN THE SPRING CITY UP CLOSE THE TENTS

Living ‘South of the Clouds’; welcome to Spring City

Our Nordisk Village journey takes us to Yunnan province, south-west China

With a population of just under 48 million and covering an area of 394,000 km2.

The province has a 4,000 km border running from Myanmar to the west, Laos to the south, and Vietnam to the southeast.

In Trade terms; Yunnan was one of the most important places on the Ancient Caravan Road of Tea and Horses which extended from Yunnan to Sichuan, Tibet, and India, and our Nordisk Village is found in here, in Kunming, Provincial Capital , n the picturesque lakeside setting of the Spring City Golf Club & Resort.

The pillow's low, the quilt is warm, the body smooth and peaceful, Sun shines on the door of the room, the curtain not yet open. Still the youthful taste of spring remains in the air, Often it will come to you even in your sleep.
whatever time you’ve set aside for Yunnan, double it.

About the architect

If you need inspiration and a deeper knowledge of the Yunnan character, look no further than Nongbu! Nongbu was born and raised in Shangri-la and is very passionate about Yunnan culture and strives to tell the world about

The project itself is a huge step forward for Nordisk Village; the project takes recycled materials, including construction waste to create renewable, modular cement components which, when pieced together in specific modular combinations, create these ultra-modern platforms and shared spaces.

Here, these spaces include; the Rock Bar, the Sunken Shadow relax area , coffee shop, toilets and showers.

The design is crisp, clean and very sustainable and is another big step towards Nordisks UN SDG program goals. More on that later …

Kunming

Originally known as Yunnan-hu, Kunming is the capital city of Yunnan Province and has a population of just over 6.5 Million.

The city is easily one of the most interesting cities in China, and one of the most underrated places to live. It also is amongst Chinas best cities for air quality and affordability.

Blessed with rugged stone landscapes, snowcapped mountains, and red lands surrounding it, Kunming is a heaven for photographers, travelers and outdoor lovers alike.

Known as the 'the Spring City' as every season is like spring: changeable but not too extreme; Covered with blossoms and lush vegetation all year round, Kunming is a central hub for flower commerce and the city boasts several indoor and outdoor markets. It is, not surprisingly, known as 'the Flower City'.

All this gives Kunming an essentially easy-going, laid back nature which we find irresistible!

The Project

This amazing project is a true synergy between Spring Cty Golf & Resort, Nordisk Outdoor Denmark and Nongbu.

The aim is was be both creative and practical; to tell the story of this Resort, our architect Nogngbu, Kunming and Yunnan itself whilst creating a new, modern and comfortable style of alternative tourism.

An abundance of natural scenery, together with the vision of Nongbu and our stunning Nordisk Cotton Tents.

make this our boldest and most exciting project yet; building in nature while maintaining the sustainability of the camp, the environment and the harnessing the power of local input and creativity to build a project with a very visible, local, impact.

The Mountains are high and the Emperor is far away...

Strength lies in differences, not in similarities

Yunnan history

Long long ago, large parts of Yunnan were independent from the rest of the Chinese empire, forming the kingdom of Nanzhao. Even after China incorporated the province, Yunnan was often a place where disgraced officials were sent in exile. Not only is there plenty of distance between Yunnan and China’s capital, imposing mountains, thick forests, and mighty rivers made it geographically a difficult place to reach. Not so nowadays, as Yunnan & Kunming now serve as important travel hubs in and out of China but, because of this, Yunnanese people have infact developed a rather relaxed attitude to life!

CULTURE

Among China's 56 officially recognized ethnic groups, 25 are found in Yunnan, making the region one of the most diverse provinces in the country.

Of these 25 ethnic groups, the 15 types only belong to Yunnan region, most notably Bai, Hani, Dai, Lisu, Lahu, Wa, Naxi, Jingpo, Bulang, Pumi, Achang, Nu, Jinuo, Deang and Drung. With so many traditions, customs, and languages, it is sometimes impossible to pin Yunnanese culture down with broad generalizations. Yunnan's ethnic and cultural diversity make it unique, and the Yunnanese are rightly, quite proud of this fac t!

Isolation invites artists, free thinkers

Yunnan’s density of mountains, great rivers and thick forests help preserve its relative separation from other parts of China. Put in simple terms; it was always quite difficult to get to Yunnan.

Yunnan’s welcoming of free thinking, in fact, has turned the province into a sanctuary for artists, musicians and others desiring simple lives liberated from constant oversight.

Yunnan stories are a gift to the imagination

South of the Clouds; Tales from Yunnan

Yunnan Minority Stories

Yunnan is the world of mountains and the hometown of rivers. On the red soil plateau, where "one mountain divides into four seasons and ten miles have different customs",

Custom, family and togetherness are fundamental features of Yunnan life. Each household gathers young and old around the central cooking fire to eat, drink and tell stories.

The importance of storytelling in Yunnan culture cannot be underestimated, Yunnan Folk literature playing an integral part in family life. Based largely around morality, these stories help children to distinguish between right and wrong, the origins of things, relationships, connection with animals and spirits; about upholding a common good.

These stories can be split into three categories:

Myth - Shenhua

Origin Stories; telling of the creation of the sky and the earth; of humankind.

Legend - Chuanshuo

Narratives on the past about events, places and customs and habits of the Yunnan people.

Tales - Minjian gushi

Things that cannot exist in real life, made real by the Storyteller’s imagination; stories of fairies, maidens, strong men and dragon girls … .

The Kingdom of Animals and Plants

Biodiversity

Though it accounts for a little over only 4% of China’s Land Area, Yunnan includes almost all ecosystem types, and is home to over 25,000 species in 11 biological groups. Since 1992, 3,178 new species have been discovered in the province, a total of 1/3 of the total amount found in China over the same period. These include over 2,700 plants and 250 species of endemic vertibraes.

The province is also home to the largest population of Asian Elephants in China, one which has grown from 150 in the last century to over 300 today. Flagship species such as black-and-white snub-nosed monkeys, and green peacocks are also seeing the recovery of their habitats in the region.

The diverse cultures of Yunnan’s varies ethic groups are closely linked to biodiversity, with cultural traditions originating from nature and coexisiting harmoniously with it.

Hygge is about an atmosphere and an Experience rather than about things.

Feeling cozy, comfortable and relaxed

Spending time with your family and friends

And having endless conversations with them about the small and big things in life while enjoying a nice cup of tea or coffee

A

nod to Regenerative tourism and the

‘Hygge Circles’

The Nordisk Village project marks a new shift towards low impact regenerative tourism, that focuses on developing regions sustainably. Nordisk Village Yunnan, with its remarkable use of reclaimed cement and wood as main building materials goes another step towards this. There is also one important addition this time; the Yunnan Hygge Circle, a nod to our Ugakei Hygge Circles site in Inabe, Japan.

Early civilizations in Denmark, China and Japan were founded in circular gatherings and were often centered around the appreciation of natural resources, fire, water and food.

The circle is also a universal shape that symbolizes equality, openness and democracy.

What the Architects say about Ugakei;

“We believe the future is about circularity. Our proposal is composed by a family of circles that define a series of sustainable communities.

The master plan and buildings embody a unique environment and a regenerative ‘hygge’ experience in nature. It is our hope that our project will become the base camp for a new type of regional nature-based development that promote sustainable awareness and brings the gift of nature to many urban dwellers.”,

Flemming Rafn Thomsen, lead architect and Co-Founder of Third Nature.

We think we have achieved this at Spring City. Here, our spectacular circular entrance, with reception, bar and open relax areas, brings a touch of Japan but also of home; of Nordisk’s home, Silkeborg as, here, is where this cirular inspiration was born. The Nordisk Village in Yunnan, which is the first to settle in China, will integrate the Danish Hygge lifestyle with Yunnan local culture, and continue to write a unique and charming outdoor lifestyle story for years to come.

Circularity … full circle …

IN THE DETAIL

Our job, in the here and now, is to try and channel a sense of what this land represents through our concept so as to understand where we are, to share the knowledge of those whose stories we tell, to respect the land and its people and to leave a piece of this place in the hearts of all who stay here.

FIBRES MATTER

Outdoor life in Spring City

What we use throughout the day, and how we use it, enhances our experience.

Each place, each home, creates its ambiance and its history –using those things which we hold most dear. In Yunnan, where craftsmanship is a skill handed down through generations, what we use, touch and feel is of paramount importance in allowing you to feel the sensation that you are immersed in an unique experience.

From kitchenware to colours, fabrics and even the most minor details there is a thought process here...

COTTON TENTS

Our tents tell our story – both of Nordisk’s journey and that of the land on which our village is built. Where possible, we have sourced locally, using the colors and tones of Yunnan and created together with those who know this place best.

Here, the Nordic world of the Vanaheim mixes with local history and Yunnan myth and legend and we have used the tents, their interior designand their stories, to piece together a more detailed, clearer picture of our location .

Our tent and those who sleep in her are equally guests; it is land itself which holds the key to this place and it will remain long after we have gone …

Inspiration for Vanaheim

Home of the Vani r

Vanaheim (Vanaheimr) means “home of the Vanir” and is one of the Nine Worlds in Norse mythology. Contrary to the younger and more martial gods of Æ sir, the Vanir were a group of gods associated with fertility, wisdom, and the ability to see into the future. Vanaheim was also the place of birth of the Van god Njord (Nj ö r ð r), which is the reason why it became the home of the Vanir.

Home of the Norse Gods

In old Norse mythology, Asgard, which means

“Enclosure of the Æ sir”, is one of the Nine Worlds, only accessible via the burning rainbow bridge Bifrost. Here lives both the old gods Vanir and the more martial gods led by Odin. With his wife Frigg, he lives in th castle Valhalla, located within Asgard.

Telling stories through canvas

We feel light when we think of Yunnan; a feeling of acceptance, of home. The free spirit who captured all our hearts allows us to insert non-farmiliar yet equally powerful culture into this Nordisk Village Mix; that of the Norsemen, our nordic, Nordisk, Vikings … here, through these wonderful Cotton Tents, we tell not only the story of Yunnan but also of Nordic Myth and legend; these tents carry heavy, powerful names and we would like to share them with you: they fill you with courage, protect you from the outside world … .

1. Baohong

Baohong means “vast treasure” and is the name of the mountain on which a tea of the same name grows. Originally from the Fujian Province, it was first introduced to Yunnan over 1000 years ago. The main characteristic of this tea is that only the small leaves are harvested and therefore the taste is less bitter than other varieties of tea. Unfortunately, it grows exclusively on one mountain, and therefore the production is very limited. Moreover, unlike other types of tea, it should be consumed fresh, according to the locals not later than June or before the Dragon Boat Festival.

2. Sea of Flowers

C overed with blossoms and lush vegetation all year round, Kunming is named and famed as 'the Flower City'. One of the features of shopping inKunming is that the flower market sell flowers by Jin (a unit of weight, equals to 1/2 kilogram).

Original famous Shangyi Street flower market has been removed, at present, the Chajie Street No.1 flower market is a good place or buying flowers, which is located at the center of Kunming. Others include Jiameng Flower Market ( 佳盟花市 ) and Dounan Flower Market (斗南花市 , where multitude of shops and stores stand along the long and narrow street displaying a huge variety of flowers, various kinds of rare plants.

3. Asima & 4. Ahei

Kunming’s Stone Forest 石林 :  is a natural geological wonder that is made up of towering karst formations. It is a popular attraction in Kunming and is a must-see for anyone visiting the city. Yet from it came a legendary love story akin to those of Noah meets Lot, Romeo and Juliet meets Legend of Zelda but with a Yunnan spin! This ethnic Yi fable tells of the beautiful yet sad Ashima who falls in love with the poor but kindhearted shepherd Ahei. But the covetous son of the noble lord falls for Asima and abducts her deep in the limestone labyrinth. Ahei challenges him to singing and wrestling competitions, and triumphs after three days. But the villain, rather than give in, floods the Stone Forest, drowning and fossilizing the lovers! The story holds more credence as Geologists agree the area was once underwater - albeit 200 million years ago. Buried lovers or not, It remains a modern marvel and UNESCO World Heritage Site and a must-see during any Kunming visit, as are the two karsts, said to be Ashima and Ahei … ..

5. Aurgelmir (Ymir)

Aurgelmir, in Norse mythology, the first being and father of all the giants, who was created from the drops of water that formed when the ice of Niflheim met the heat of Muspelheim. Aurgelmir became the grandfather of the great god Odin and his brothers. These gods killed Aurgelmir, and fashioned the earth from his flesh, the seas from his blood, mountains from his bones, stones from his teeth, the sky from his skull, and clouds from his brain. His eyelashes (or eyebrows) became the fence surrounding Midgard, or Middle Earth, the home of mankind.

6. Xiaohuangjin  (The Little Fish) & 7. Sleeping Beauty

These tents, together, tell the story of a poor hunter and his loving wife.

A long time ago, Kunming was a very dry place, much like a desert, and the hunter knew that he must find water for his hometown. He left, and this difficult quest for water took him to the shores of the Eastern Sea. There on the shore, the hunter an unlimited supply of water but had no idea how to carry any of it back to Kunming. As he contemplated what to do, he saw a little carp caught by a huge eagle and, without hesitation, raised his bow and shot down the eagle. To his surprise, at that moment the fish turned into a princess, the daughter of the Dragon King of the Eastern Sea.. the Dragon King, on hearing this, decided his daughter should marry the brave hunter but the hunter could only think of his wife. Upon hearing this, the Dragon King flew into a rage. He transformed the hunter into a tiny fish, called a xiaohuangjin.

His new body — meant to be a punishment — actually solved the hunter's original problem. He filled his belly with water from the sea and headed back to his hometown, filling the lake with water...

8. Dongchuan

Located in the northeast of Kunming, Dongchuan is a rural area in the Wumeng mountains. Dongchuan, which  means “palette,” is a valley of colors. Spanning 50 kilometers around the village of Huashitou in Xintian township, about 2400 meters above sea level, are rolling mountains where fiery red soil caused by iron oxide and the cultivation of golden wheat, emerald barley, white potato flowers and pink buckwheat produces a magnificent landscape, a stunning mix of geometric designs and colors. Often referred to as the color palette of the gods, it is actually a wonderful creation of the farmers. Stones in the soil prevent croplands from retaining water so farmers plant drought-resistant crops.

Sustainable

The farmers sustain the fragile ecosystem by opting for traditional means of power generation with wind turbines that dot the undulating landscape of Dongchuan.

9. Fuxian

F uxian The Lost City 失落的城市

Yuxi, less than 2 hours south of Spring City, is home to Fuxian Lake, a famous fresh water lake and the third deepest in China. According to legend, two fairies had descended to earth and passed by this lake. They were so reluctant to leave that they eventually turned into two stone women with their hands on each other’s shoulders, the meaning of “fuxian” in Chinese. One of the most famous places on the Lake is Pink Beach  山咀 (Hongshanzui), a beautiful sandy beach with a pinkish color and perfect for spending a day relaxing lakeside. However, what is truly interesting is what lies below:

The Lost city

China’s People’s Daily reported that pottery and stonework covering an area of approximately 2.4–2.7 square kilometers had been discovered beneath the lake by legendary diver Gond Wei. Deep on the lake bed he found hand dressed flagstones, ruins of old buildings and even an old staircaseCarbon dating circa 2007 confirmed that an ancient civilization inhabited the city around 1,750 years ago. Who they were and how they got there, we will never know …

10. Home from Home - jia xiang bao

In China, Yunnanese people are known as “jia xiang bao,” or hometown babies.

Most Yunnanese love their home province something fierce, and it is said that you don’t see many Yunnanese outside of the province because most of them simply can’t bear to be away for too long. Of course, it isn’t hard to understand why, Yunnan’s gorgeous scenery and temperate climate make it a really comfortable place to live. In fact, many travellers living in Yunnan were originally backpackers or travelers who found the place so nice that they decided to stick around!

11. Kapok

Gold kapok is the name given to cotton fibres harvested from the tropical kapok tree, also known as the silk-cotton tree (Ceiba pentandra). It is distributed across the arid valleys of Southwest China, making it a staple tree for ecological restoration in the degraded and underdeveloped region.

Its multifunctional nature make it truly innovative; its flowers, roots and bark are edible, with medical applications; fibres can be used in pillows, mattresses, clothingoffering an alternative for cotton-sensitive skin; oil can be pressed from it for use in lubricants and soap; and its wood can be used for making paper.

Gold Kapok offers a sustainable alternative to cotton as the main global crop or textile production.

12. Atilaba

The Torch Festival is one of the Yi people's main holidays. According to Yi legend, there were once two men of great strength, Sireabi and Atilaba. Sireabi lived in heaven while Atilaba on earth. When Sireabi heard of Atilaba's strength, he challenged Atilaba to a wrestling match. After suffering two defeats, Sireabi was killed in a bout, which greatly angered the bodhisattavas, who sent a plague of locusts to punish the earth. On the 24th day of the 6th month of the lunar calendar, Atilaba cut down many pine trees and used them as torches to kill the locusts, protecting the crops from destruction. The Torch Festival is thus held in his honor

13. Zhyge Alu

The most famous character in Yi Mythology and a true hero of Yunnan! Zygge Alu was told to be the son of a dragon and an eagle, a man with superhuman strength and incredible magic powers. He was followed by a magical peacock and by Bbahxa Ayuosse, a python Zhyge Alu tamed by wrestling him, in the ocean, after transforming into a dragon!

Riding a nine-winged flying horse known as ‘’Long Heavenly Wings’’ he was protector of people, curer of illness and a fighter of ghosts.

14. Blang

According to traditional Drung Myth, everything that exists on earth has a spirit. All ghosts, spirits and monsters are called blang and are omnipresent. This spirit is equivalent to a God and is not an individual soul but the personification or a transformation of a natural force. We no longer see the blang however, as – thanks to a young man named Peng who killed the arrogant blang king – they are now scared of humans and dare not harm us or get in our way!

15. Mjolnir

Mjolnir (literally, "grinder" ) is the enchanted hammer wielded by Thor of Asgard, the Norse God of Thunder. The Uru hammer which grants him many of his powers and abilities, was forged by Eitri (known also as Sindri), and the Dwarves of Nidavellir in the heart of a dying star. Mjolnir is enchanted so it can only be wielded by those who are deemed "worthy" and is the symbol of Asgard.

16. Short Trunk

Have you ever heard of the Short-Trunk Clan?

Yunnan has a long-term relationship with Asian Elephants and, as we have heard, has done much to increase the herd in recent years. However, one herd decided to undertake what became known as an ‘epic journey’ when, in March 2020, a dozen or so other elephants from the Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve in the south of the province, took a trip all the way to Kunming and back, covering more than 1300Km.

Known as the ‘Short Trunk Clan’ after the herd member with a shorter-than-usual trunk, their trek certainly brought them worldwide attention!

Though there is not one particular reason for this epic journey, 2020 brought drought across much of Yunnan with high temperatures and low rainfall so scarcity of food was certainly a factor.

17. Cross the bridge

Yunnan ( 云南 , Y ú nn á n ) Is not only diverse in people and geography but also in food!

While in Kunming, don’t forget to try guoqiaomixian, translated as ‘Crossing-the-Bridge noodles’ in a delicious piping hot chicken broth and served with vegetables, fish, herbs and spices – all with rice on the side; It is one of Yunnan's most popular dishes. A thing of Legend

Kunming legend has it that the dish was created by a woman who needed a soup that didn't become soggy as she carried it across a bridge to her husband. Great story, great noodles!

18. Chamagudao

From around a thousand years ago, the Tea Horse Road become a trade link from Yunnan to Tibet; and to Central China via Sichuan Province. It is believed that it was through this trading network that tea (typically tea bricks) first spread across China and Asia from its origins in Pu'er county in Yunnan.

Generally referred to as the Ancient Tea Horse Road or Chamagudao (simplified Chinese: 茶古道 ; traditional Chinese: 茶馬古道 ) this was a long network of tracks and paths winding through the mountains of Yunnan, Sichuan and Tibet.

19. Fun Farm

Nestled amidst forests, the Spring City Organic Farm is a shining example of ecological conservation, with practices ranging from the use of organic soil to sustainable long-term crop management. Here, children can not only enjoy themselves but also learn about the joys of sustainable farming and ecology, while obtaining internationally recognised learning certification in their experiential journeys; all just a short distance from our Village!

20. Dabaixiong

Dabaixiong literaly means ‘Big White Bear’ and, In the realm of spirit animals, the represents strength, courage, confidence, and leadership and reminds us of the importance of self-care and care unto others.

The bear is also important to the concepts of feng shui, the Chinese art of harmonizing humans with their environments. According to this philosophy, a bear represents masculine energies, and placing a figure of a bear in the homeparticularly the main entrance - helps to protect the house and its inhabitants. What a perfect synergy, then, to have our Nordisk Big White Bear looking after us while we sleep …

‘There is a way that nature speaks, that land speaks.
Most of the time we are simply not patient enough, quiet enough, to pay attention to the story’

SUSTAINABILITY DEVELOPMENT GOALS

In 2019 Nordisk Village was chosen by Deloitte and by the UN to take part in the SDG Accellerator program, a program which helped a small number of Danish companies to follow a more responsible path towards sustainability. Being chosen as the only representative from the Travel Industry for that year's program was a huge honor but it also shows us that this concept is on point to cater for changing perceptions with regards to vacation choice; it is an excercise in respecting nature through tourism and understanding how to go forward in future. Nordisk Village now subscribes to the UN Sustainable World Goals and the goal of Sustainable Tourism and to be part of this was a huge achievement, one we are very proud of! Check out the SDG’s by visiting http://www.sdg-accelerator.org ), you will see us there on the list!
