Lesser-Known Factors that Contribute

When you hear “heat stress,” you probably think of is a hot, sunny, summer day. Working in the hot sun can certainly contribute to heat stress, but it’s not the only factor to consider.

Understanding Heat Stress: Heat stress is a broad category of disorders ranging from mildly uncomfortable to life-threatening. They can include heat rash, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. You can be exposed to heat stress in a variety of jobs, and any process or site that raises the deep core temperature to more than 100.4 degrees increases the risk.

Heat Stress Factors You Might Miss: Personal, environmental, and job factors determine a person’s degree of risk for heat stress. Environmental factors are most commonly considered. But don’t overlook the danger associated with personal and job risk factors.

Signs and Symptoms: Watch for headaches nausea, dizziness, cool, clammy skin, pale face, cramps, weakness, or excessive sweating. If these symptoms are present, move to a cooler spot and provide water and rest.

Heat stroke is serious, and if left untreated it can lead to possibly fatal complications. Symptoms include headache, nausea, flushed face, hot, dry skin, lack of sweating, body temperature of 101 degrees or higher, chills, and a rapid pulse.

Workers experiencing heat stroke symptoms should receive immediate treatment from a medical professional. Move them to a shady place, wrap them in a cool sheet, and call 911.

1. Medication Use by those experiencing the following should be monitored; colds, allergies, congestion, blood pressure, diarrhea, dizziness or vertigo, psychosis, and depression.

2. Alcohol Use in the previous 24 hours increases susceptibility to heat-related illnesses by impacting the body’s ability to regulate temperature.

3. Acclimatization to the heat for new and returning employees should be done slowly. Those already acclimatized may be prone to heat stress when there is a sudden change in temperature, such as a heat wave.

4. Proximity to hot equipment can increase the risk for those working with, or close to, engines and other heat-generating equipment.

5. Clothing and PPE can be heavy and impact the ability to breathe, making it easy to overheat. Pay attention to materials that prevent sweat evaporation. The heavier the clothing, the longer evaporation takes to cool skin.

6. Fluid Loss can vary from person to person, those who lose more than 1.5% of their body weight in a single day from sweating are at greater risk of heat stress.

7. Work Schedule and strenuous work during the hottest part of the day can increase the risk of heat-related illnesses. Modify schedules so strenuous work is done in the morning or in the afternoon, instead of midday to help prevent exposure to extreme heat. Work Table Benefits

Improved Safety

A welding table with features such as heat-resistant coatings and built-in clamps can help prevent accidents and injuries. Find customizable tables that come in multiple sizes, work tops, and have plenty of accessories.

Versatility

Welding tables come in various configurations and sizes and may offer adjustable features to accommodate a wide range of angles and positions. This versatility ensures the ability to complete diverse welding projects with ease, no matter the surface, flat, angled, or curved.

Minimized Distortion

Heat can cause materials to expand and contract, leading to distortion. A welding table with a heat-resistant surface helps dissipate heat evenly, reducing the likelihood of distortion and warping in the workpiece.

Cleaner Welds

Smooth and level welding tables help create cleaner welds by providing consistent contact between the workpiece and the welding electrode. Plus, a clean and clutter-free table prevents debris and slag build-up, contributing to quality welds.

Accessories

Accessories can improve your welding. Attaching clamps, fixtures, and jigs to hold your workpiece in place, ensures stability and accuracy.

Powerlift™ Adjustable Height Weld Table

An industrial-grade table designed to fit your garage and shop needs. A multifunctional solution featuring powered electric lift columns to raise and lower the work surface. It is an all-steel construction and is standard with a built to last ⅜" thick steel Workman Series™ solid top.

Purging and Cutting Safety Guidelines

Model 25GX500-580 Purging Regulator

Medium duty for use with all fuel gases. Lightweight with a solid forged 90-degree head, brazed triangular tubes, and a flip-up solid forged brass cutting lever. Includes visible, easily replaceable, external FlashGuard flashback arrestors.

A single-stage nitrogen purging regulator designed for performance and economy, but with features typically available in more expensive models. Features include a T-screw for easier adjusting at high pressures.

1. Chain cylinders to prevent falling. A cylinder can become a lethal projectile if it falls and the valve is sheared.

2. Before attaching to a cylinder, vent regulator valve to remove dust or dirt which may be combustible. If applicable, inspect the regulator inlet filter to ensure it's clean and in place.

3. Open cylinder valve slowly to prevent unnecessary strain on the regulator and/or a sudden pressure surge, which is accompanied by substantial heat. Always stand to the side.

4. Use the correct size tip and pressure. Too much pressure can cause REVERSE FLOW. Too little pressure can cause tip sputtering and popping which encourages backfire or flashback.

5. Purge the system by bleeding each hose independently. This safely bleeds the mixed gases if REVERSE FLOW occurred.

6. Do not substitute ox ygen for air. Combustible materials burn more vigorously in an oxygen-enriched atmosphere. Serious injury may result.

7. Don’t use oil. If a cylinder valve is opened quickly, the heat of recompression creates an ignition temperature. Oxygen is present and if oil, which has an extremely low flash point, is also present, a combustion triangle is complete and a dangerous explosion may occur.

High-Visibility Absorbents Combining Safety Signage with Absorbency

Slips, trips and falls, are some of the greatest issues plaguing organizations, accounting for one in six lost time injuries and 96 million workdays lost per year.

One of the most frequent causes of slips, trips, and falls is a wet or slippery work surface. While absorbents can be used to clean up leaks, drips, and spills, and reduce moisture in aisles and walkways, sometimes absorbency alone isn’t enough.

Consider areas with low visibility, where a standard grey, universal pad may go unnoticed to employees working nearby. Or a work cell where, despite best efforts, trips still seem to occur frequently.

High visibility absorbents feature bright safety coloring to draw attention to a potential hazard and provide messaging at the point of need.

What Is Calibration Gas?

A calibration gas is a reference gas or gas mixture used as a comparative standard in the calibration of analytical instruments, like gas analyzers or gas detectors. A calibration gas has to be of a precisely defined nature or composition, like zero gas or span gas, for example, 500 ppm carbon monoxide in nitrogen.

To be a calibration gas, the gas must be traceable to a national or international standard. Traceability is the unbroken chain of comparisons to an acceptable international standard. The calibration gas standard establishes a known analyzer response to a certified chemical component concentration. In the calibration gas, preparation tolerance (PT) and certification/ analytical accuracy (CA) are of utmost importance.

Preparation tolerance is the concentration range that

includes minor components and concentration. PT is measured in the range of concentration. It can also be referred to as blending tolerance. For instance, a calibration gas of 500 ppm CO balance nitrogen having PT +/- 10% contains between 450 ppm and 550 ppm. Preparation tolerance can be minimized by using the latest manufacturing technologies. Preparation tolerance is decided on the basis of the manufacturer’s experience and the customer’s requirements.

Certification/analytical accuracy is defined as the agreement of measured values with its true value.

Certification values are determined statistically, considering the uncertainties accompanied by the international standard to which it is traceable, instrument uncertainty, and instability of gas in the container. Adapted from Wikipedia, Calibration Gas
