Cold Stress Protection
According to OSHA, outdoor workers and/or those exposed to cold and windy conditions are at risk of cold stress; both air temperature and wind speed affect how cold they feel. As wind speed increases, it causes the cold air temperature to feel even colder, increasing the risk of cold stress to exposed workers. Risk factors for cold stress: • Wetness/dampness, improper clothing, and exhaustion • Existing Health conditions such as hypertension, hypothyroidism, and diabetes • Poor physical conditioning •
Wind chill
It’s easy to see how below-freezing conditions and inadequate PPE can cause cold stress, but cold stress can also occur at temperatures in the 50s when coupled with rain and/or wind. It is very important to be aware of wind chill in any cold prevention program. If you don’t factor in wind chill, your cold stress strategy will miss the mark and workers’ health could be seriously compromised.

Ice Melt Basics

Follow directions: Read and follow application instructions. Wear protective gloves and appropriate footwear on snowy or icy surfaces.

Timing is everything: Apply ice melt prior to freezing temps or immediately after clearing snow. Remove slush after ice melt takes effect.

Don’t overuse: Using more than directed doesn’t quicken how fast it thaws. It can damage the environment and cause excess to be tracked inside.
•
Prevent tracking: Tracked ice melt is a hazard. It can damage floors and the residue can actually reduce traction. Replace saturated floor mats and add extras when needed.
•
Proper storage: Ice melt absorbs moisture, even from the air. Store it in airtight containers away from moisture, air, and sunlight to prevent clumping or hardening.

Cold Weather Hydration It’s more important than you may think
While workers always hear about the importance of replacing electrolytes during the dog days of summer, many are unaware that consuming electrolytes is equally as important during cold winter months. Extreme temperatures, both hot and cold, have an impact on physical health and well being, including mental and physical performance.
During the cold winter months, the body has to work harder to maintain its core internal temperature or thermoregulation, which means higher requirements for water and food. On top of that, physically demanding work in construction and manufacturing may double a person’s energy requirements. The paradox, however, is that during cold weather when most of us are trying to stay warm, it is possible to become dehydrated. Unlike the summer months, when one is more acutely aware of one’s thirst and the need to stay hydrated, thirst is often an unreliable predictor of one’s hydration status during winter. Many people don’t feel thirsty in cold weather. Drinking plenty of fluids; bundling up and wearing temperature appropriate clothing; can be the best way to help the body maintain its core internal temperature on particularly bitter cold days. Water or electrolyte replenishment beverages like Sqwincher, not soda, coffee, or other caffeinated beverages, are the best way to hydrate. Occupational Hearing Loss
Occupational hearing loss can occur as a result of exposure to loud noise or chemicals. Noise is considered hazardous at 85 A-weighted decibels or higher and exposure to certain chemicals can cause damage to parts of the ear, meaning they are ototoxic.
Exposure to ototoxic chemicals can cause hearing loss and make the ears more sensitive to the harmful effects of noise. About 10 million workers are exposed to solvents and an unknown number are exposed to other ototoxicants. Those exposed to hazardous noise or chemicals should have yearly hearing tests.
While occupational hearing loss is permanent, it is preventable. Employers and health and safety professionals can measure noise, implement controls, and establish hearing loss prevention programs. Research shows that hearing loss is also associated with cognitive decline and heart problems. It can also impact mental health, which may result in depression, anxiety, and a feeling of isolation and sadness. Hearing loss can impact safety at home and on the job. The sound of a smoke detector, the warning beep of a forklift, and noise from an oncoming car may be missed. Those with hearing loss are more likely to get injured at work. Most loss occurs slowly over time.

FABTECH 2023, held September 11 - 14 in Chicago, welcomed 40,505 attendees from across the globe including vendors, consumers, sales reps, students and educators, along with other industry leaders. The event’s show floor spans an impressive 825,325 square feet across three different activity/tool focused halls, featured an extensive showcase of over 1,500 world-class exhibitors. If you attended FABTECH this year no doubt you have key takeaways, our include the importance of automation, high-level training, and software. While robotics have been a mainstay in the welding industry for many years, cobot technology is fairly new to the world of welding automation. This year many new types of equipment, for a variety of uses, were front and center for many exhibitors. Vectis Automation showcased their Park-N-Arc, along with a new positionable table for fixturing a part and allowing adjustment of the weld position. Miller Electric continues to lead the industry with high-level virtual training options. In the past educational facilities were the primary consumers of virtual welding simulators. With their success in introducing people to welding along with the ability to train in real-time on processes and techniques without a live arc, these systems are gaining popularity with business owners as well. Many companies now use the technology as part of their hiring process and for employee continuing education. Because the industry is evolving and changing at such a rapid pace, we find businesses are now relying on software more than ever. Software in general permits the shifting of highly skilled workers into roles and tasks that can’t be automated. It allows for those who are “tech-savvy” to operate both fully and semi-automated equipment. These software offerings include nesting, raw materials inventory control, pipe and tube bending, and continues to expand. L A U N C H E D AT FA B T E C H 2 0 2 3 The Vectis Park’N’Arc is a rotational range extender that increases reach in a simple, easy, and efficient manner – all while maintaining the portability and versatility of the system. Bundle management is handled through a rotational pivot in the center of the “diving board” extension, keeping cables clear from snagging and increasing the flexibility of the unit. With pinned locations every 45 degrees, flexibility is maximized while maintaining repeatability and without sacrificing ease of use and redeployability. Uses include multi-zone welding, reaching long parts, placing the cobot over the center of a large part, and more. TM
The Vectis Rover joins the Park’N’Arc as a simple means for robotic repositioning when it’s helpful to bring the robot to the part rather than bringing the part to the robot. Rover’s deployment method offers a rugged and flexible means of bringing welding and cutting tools to large workpieces. Designed with portability in mind for heavyindustry fab shops, the Rover’s compact skid can be undocked from the full cart via forklift or crane, and placed onto large parts to perform long, boring weld joints. Think of the Rover as a “mag drill for welding” where an operator can bring a tool to a workpiece and have the tool perform boring, dexterous tasks for hours on end. TM
Vectis Automation is excited to add the long-reach UR20 arm to their integrated cobot welding and cutting tools. This new arm brings 18" of additional reach radius (36" diameter increase), broadening the range of achievable weldments in a given fixture setup. It also brings next-gen design enhancements – including 50% fewer parts in the axis drive trains – to further improve already robust and highperformance cobot products. The UR20 is available with a variety of process equipment and is available for the XL Cart, DualFab, and Rover. Vectis Automation unveiled their DualFab DualStation System deployment method offering at FABTECH 2023. The DualFab combines the industryproven Vectis platform with a flexible dual-station layout; allowing fabricators to heavily boost arc-on time with the operator and cobot working in parallel. Each zone comes standard with a 30"x48" fixture grid top from Stronghand Tools. Additionally, one or both zones can be upgraded to include a manual rotisserie bearing. This flexibility offers simple interchangeable options maximizing open space for a variety of customer fixtures. The cobot is placed on a cantilevered riser in between each zone to improve reachability; with builtin arc flash protection to protect the operator while loading/unloading/tending each zone. TM

Choosing a Multifunction Engine Drive Welder Engine-driven welders are essential pieces of equipment on most jobsites, so how do you choose the right one? The jobs you do most often and where you do the work help determine which engine drive best fits your needs. Whether you’re mostly doing welding repairs or structural field welding, selecting the right machine is based largely on the welding process being used and the consumables required to do the job.

Most engine-driven welders are available in gas, diesel, and LP models. Choosing the right option for your needs depends on several factors, including cost, weight, and space requirements. Gas engines can offer a lower initial machine cost, reduced weight, and a smaller size. Diesel engines can use significantly less fuel than gas models while providing longer engine life and they also may be required on some outdoor jobsites. Select the fuel option that best suits your needs and work environment. Engine drives offer power generation capabilities ranging from 5,000 to 20,000 watts. On many jobsites, two operators must work off the same machine. Look for a machine where the welding circuit and power circuit are independent of each other, so it doesn’t cut down on the amount of power being delivered when one operator is welding, and one operator is using the generator power for a plug-in tool. As a result, the system ensures there is no interaction between the welding arc and jobsite tools, so weld quality increases and jobsite tools can run without interruption.
If fuel costs are a primary concern when choosing an engine-driven welder, look for technologies that help save fuel. One way to improve fuel efficiency and optimize profitability is to choose an engine-driven welder with electronic fuel injection (EFI). This technology provides faster, more reliable starts in any weather and delivers up to 42% greater fuel efficiency.

The welds look great, but are they strong? Laser Welding vs. Traditional Welding

Putting laser welds to the test
IPG, LightWeld’s parent company, sent samples to Sturbridge Metallurgical Services for third-party evaluation. Accredited by NADCAP (National Aerospace and Defense Contractors Accreditation Program) and A2LA (American Association for Laboratory Accreditation), Sturbridge had the correct experience to properly and independently evaluate test samples. In 1993, the American Welding Society (AWS) formed a committee of experts from the aircraft and aerospace industries. This committee produced AWS D17.1:2017, an American National Standard. While this standard covers several classes, samples were tested against the most demanding class, Class A which includes critical aerospace applications where a single failure could cause loss of system, component or control putting personnel in danger and at risk.
Butt joints in plates of 0.036" (~0.89mm), 0.075" (~1.9mm) and 0.120" (~3.05mm) were produced and sections were prepared using American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standard methodology and inspected at 50X magnification. A total of 26 cross-sections were inspected. In all cases, no cracking, incomplete fusion, porosity, inclusions, or other defects were noted. Weld profile passed and in no case was underfill noted. During the ultimate tensile testing, seven samples were prepared for evaluation. Out of those, only one failed on the weld joint while the other six failed at the base material. The elongation of the samples that failed at the base material ranged from 48% to 59%, while the sample that failed at the weld joint had an elongation of 54%. All weld samples were found to be acceptable to AWS D17.1:2017 Class A Standards. In all cases, no defects were noted during weld tests for butt joints in 304 stainless steel plates of 0.036", 0.075", and 0.120". The weld profiles passed all tests.
