In 2010, efforts focused on the construction of Plant 4, with a total investment of EUR 40 million. As planned, the surface and underground construction work was completed in autumn 2010 and a large part of the landscaping work was carried out. With an organic colour concept created by Friedrich-Ernst von Garnier, the building blends harmoniously into the surrounding landscape. The world-famous colour philosopher also created the visual design for the two-storey factory building. The installation of a new nonwovens line has, so far, proceeded as planned. As many as 160 technicians and installation assistants, primarily from competent regional trade enterprises, are involved. The new central warehouse on the first floor has already been commissioned; production is set to start at the end of the first quarter of 2011. The company employs 520 people. The construction of Plant 4 has created 60 new jobs for qualified employees. For decades, training has been an important area of activity for our Personnel department. High value is placed on ensuring that all employees are offered opportunities for promotion and that even hidden talent is nurtured. In 2010, the company took on 20 new trainees. Sandler AG is training a total of 55 junior employees in 14 professions. In addition, we have very good relationships with the colleges and universities, particularly Hof University of Applied Sciences. Sandler AG offers internships, and practice-oriented theses are written within the company every year. The publication of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) report, which is a given for large companies today but more of an exception for medium-sized companies, was very well-received. This report documents the sustainable activities of Sandler AG in a comprehensive manner. It covers the areas of eco-management and certifications, products and production, employees, regional commitment, and the company headquarters with its natural surroundings. One example is the philosophy "Less is best to nature," i.e. developing products with a decreased weight, and therefore using a reduced amount of raw materials, while retaining the same quality level and functional aspects. Today, 40% of all fibres used come from renewable raw materials or recycled PET bottles. Other examples are the responsible personnel policy, as mentioned above, environmental protection and support for social and church-based institutions, sporting and cultural events, and various associations in the Schwarzenbach area. In 2010, EUR 70,000 was given to good causes from the sponsorship provided by Sandler AG and donations from the Christian-Heinrich-Sandler Charity Trust. With a solid financing structure, a good earnings situation, successful new product lines, and, above all, highly qualified and motivated local employees, Sandler AG will succeed in rising to these challenges.

Italians didn’t stay quiet against the developments in nonwovens. Italian textile machinery manufactuers began to invest ini nonwovens. The production of nonwovens appears to be booming and opens to further growth possibilities in different application markets (geotextile, filtration, automotive, etc). The challenge requires specifical solutions for using textile technologies proposed by manufacturers. This is the context in which Italian textile machinery companies can play a leading role in the development of the sector.Italy’s textile machinery sector is an area of excellence in the machine-tool industry, comprising some 300 companies which in 2010 produced machinery for a net worth of 2.3 billion euros. 79% of sales revenues were generated by foreign markets. Italy is an industry leader in the production of textile machinery, together with Germany and Japan; its share of worldwide exports in the sector amounts to 12.2%. Italian machinery manufacturers export to over 100 Countries. Asia is the primary market (51% of total exports), whereas Europe, with a 30% share, is the other preferential destination for Italian manufacturers. Acimit estimates that about 50 members companies are involved in the production of machinery for nonwovens. This sector is observing a steadily growing turnover, accounting for about 10% on the total turnover of Italian textile machinery industry. Acimit has been developing a project related to technical textiles and nonwovens which aims to enhance the knowledge in the field of these niche markets, drawing manufacturers closer to areas of research, while promoting targeted initiatives, often carried out in partnership with Italian Trade Commission. In 2011 Acimit, with the support of the Ministry for Economic Development and Italian Trade Commission, has compiled a brochure that will be distributed at the major trade fairs of the sector as a useful tool aimed at promoting awareness for the technological excellence its associated manufacturers provide in nonwovens sector. The catalogue includes list of products manufactured by these companies.

Sandler goes green – Bio Textile for the wipes market Reducing the carbon footprint of its products throughout their life cycle is a top priority for Sandler AG. In the market for wipes substrates, its latest state-of-the-art spunlacing line enables the company to achieve even lower basis weights at low energy usage while the well-proven quality is maintained. Consequently, raw material consumption and CO 2 emissions resulting from energy utilisation are being minimised. The lightweight wipes substrates also decrease the amount of waste after use. In 2008, Sandler AG launched its “Less is Best to Nature” project, focussing on low basis weights in wipes applications in order to reduce raw material consumption and waste. A new development for the disposable wipes, market takes this project to higher levels. Sandler’s wipes substrate, bio textile by Sandler , was developed in cooperation with one of the company’s raw material suppliers. It is composed of 100% viscose fibres, making it fully biodegradable. The product features excellent absorbency and softness at low basis weights. Moreover, both the fibres utilised as well as the nonwoven substrate itself are certified according to the PEFC standard, which stands for a sustainable handling of wood and products made of it. The fibres are of European origin, thus minimizing the overall carbon emissions in transportation and positively affecting the carbon footprint of the product. The Sandler Bio Wipe substrate is also equipped with a unique hydroembossing design with design elements illustrating the manufacturer’s commitment to sustainability. Latest Sandler nonwovens for floor cloths feature reduced MD and CD elongation for increased resilience. Hygiene / Medical Applications Softness, elasticity and care are the themes under which the company will exhibit a broad range of nonwovens for hygiene and medical applications. In this market, sustainability and the protection of the environment are also vital aspects in product development. In various stretch applications for diapers and other hygiene products, utilised materials have to offer extensibility to ensure optimal fit. They also have to be soft and feature excellent tensile strength. At this year’s INDEX exhibition, Sandler AG will show a new spunlaced nonwoven for these applications, e.g. for side panels. The utterly soft and light material features a high elongation at low force and a high CD tensile strength at maximum elongation. Also on display is a newly developed, very soft and highly extensible thermo bonded material complementing the range of qualities available for this application. Sandler is also offering high-quality nonwovens made of fibres with special finishes, or a share of cotton. Products of the botanicals product series are enhanced with aloe vera, camomile, vitamin E, or silk proteins and thereby complement proven functionalities.
