A LOVE LETTER FROM LAURA

The Auberge Le St Jean is located in a small medieval town called Nanteuil-en-Vallée in rural France.

In this warm, family run, traditional setting; seasonal local produce is served year round and you are guaranteed a smile and a culinary adventure..

Last October was my first visit to this amazing restaurant, and 6 months have seen a massiveand welcome change for this now sober drinkeralcohol free options!

In October my options were water, juice and the alcohol filled offerings you would expect in rural France. I wasn’t disappointed by this at the timeit is France after all! I was limited in my beverage options, but with a feast of flavours in terms of food, I hadn’t been disappointed.

This month, I was presented with a brand new, shiny, cocktail menu upon sitting down Alcohol Free options laid out opposite a traditional alcoholic cocktail menu. Balance.

Going back to France and finding a small but noticeable shift - and seeing the pride with which the owner placed that menu before me was something that filled me with warmth I wasn’t there to drink anyway, but to know that I was somewhat catered to was wonderful.

It isn’t a full and comprehensive menu, but I was astounded and grateful! I have been experiencing some health issues for a while now and cutting out alcohol completely has become necessary to my well being on a more serious level than I had engaged with alcohol free for before

I opted for what we would call a Virgin Pina Colada and it was bloody good actually! That said, all three options on the menu tasted good and none of us at the table felt short changed by an alcohol free cocktail - especially when adorned with a festive party streamer!

So this is a love letter, to being alcohol free, focusing on my health, the French countryside and the Auberge Le St Jean

The rest of this issue will take you on a ride around the world to Canada, USA, Scotland, Australia and New Zealand

Enjoy the ride and Vive La France!

DYNAMIC DUO

WORLD’S FIRST LGBTQ+ ALCOHOL FREE BREW-MASTERS ARE MAKING AN IMPACT

In the lively world of craft beer in the U.K., a dynamic duo has taken the scene by storm with their unconventional approach to brewing Meet Joelle Drummond and her wife Sarah, the masterminds behind Drop Bear Beer Company, shaking things up with their unique brews like stouts, lagers, and pale ales. Hailing from Swansea, Wales, Joelle and Sarah are breaking stereotypes left and right, not just with the beers they create but also with their inclusive workplace culture “I believe from all the research I’ve been able to do that we’re actually the world’s first LGBTQ+ alcohol-free brewery,” Joelle proudly shared with Pink News.

Their journey began in 2019 when they brewed their first batch at home From the outset, they were determined to build Drop Bear in alignment with their values, which meant more than just crafting great beer. Their products now grace shelves across the U.K., as well as in Canada and New Zealand.

But it's not just about the beer for Joelle and Sa making a positive impact. They've made a consc hire LGBTQ+ employees, with half of their staff queer. They've also forged a partnership with th Galop, directing proceeds from their limited-edi to support LGBTQ+ victims

Drop Bear has achieved several milestones, inc becoming Wales’ first certified B-corp brewery world’s first carbon-neutral alcohol-free brewery beers are vegan and gluten-free, catering to div and dietary preferences

Their success lies in their ability to tap into the “ curious” movement, where younger generations increasingly open to non-alcoholic options. “We about not preaching to people on their drinking providing a really cool craft beer option if they d drink or just to cut down,” Joelle explains.

With enticing brews like Bonfire Stout, Tropical Pale Ale, and New World Lager, Drop Bear offe twist on non-alcoholic beverages But for Joelle more than just the beer—it's about representatio principles “Queer women having visibility in lead is more essential than people realize,” she emph embodying the spirit of inclusivity and progress industry

SUCCESSFUL CHALLENGE & A WIN-WIN

Big Drop Brewing Co, a prominent alcohol-free brand in the UK, has recently achieved a significant win in a trademark challenge over the term 'Dry January' at the UK Intellectual Property Office

The term 'Dry January' was initially trademarked by Alcohol Research UK (now known as Alcohol Change UK) in 2014 to support their efforts in providing resources for individuals dealing with harmful drinking habits. However, in 2022, Alcohol Change UK sought to expand the trademark to cover new areas, including products and services

This move would have restricted the usage of the term 'Dry January' by other low and no alcohol brands, as well as venues and retailers, for marketing their alcohol-free drinks Big Drop Brewing Co stepped in to challenge this trademark extension, arguing that such monopolization not only hindered sales and marketing activities in the alcoholfree drinks market but also contradicted the charity's overarching goal of reducing alcohol harm.

Rob Fink, the founder of Big Drop, emphasized the collaborative spirit of the alcohol-free movement, noting that many innovative startup brands have contributed to offering palatable alternatives for Dry January and

beyond He highlighted the importance of high-quality alcoholfree drinks in supporting the hospitality industry and rewarding retailers, and emphasized the need for effective collaboration rather than unnecessary barriers

This victory underscores the shared commitment of brands like Big Drop and Alcohol Change UK to promote responsible drinking and reduce alcohol harm. It's a winwin for both parties and for consumers seeking healthier beverage options.

About Big Drop Brewing Co:

Big Drop Brewing Co was founded in 2016 as the world's first brewer dedicated to alcoholfree beer Led by Rob Fink and James Kindred, along with brewer Johnny Clayton, Big Drop has pioneered the Reduced Amylase Brewing process, ensuring that their beers never exceed 0.5% ABV while retaining all the flavor and characteristics of craft beer. With over 100 international beer awards, Big Drop is a market leader in the rapidly growing alcohol-free sector. For more information, visit www bigdropbrew com

AUSSIE AWARDS

Great news from down under!

Lyre’s Spirit Co and Edenvale are celebrating big wins at the recent World Alcohol-Free Awards, where they both took home gold medals And they're not alone 11 Australian producers were recognized in total out of a whopping 450 entries!

This prestigious competition, which is the largest of its kind for alcohol-free drinks, brought together a team of international non-alcoholic specialists to judge entries from 21 countries including our very own Lisa Marie Godfrey! From wines and spirits to beers, kombuchas, aperitifs, and cocktails, there was something for everyone on the tasting table.

According to Losh, the judges were particularly excited about vermouth, aperitifs, and wine alternatives this year, as well as the impressive growth in unique products with no alcoholic counterpart

Parkinson added, "We’re seeing a real growth in quality and complexity from the best producers in this space now particularly in wine It’s a category where producers really can’t stand still if they want to be the best In fact, across the whole AF sector, drinks that might have been considered exceptional even two or three years ago are now often being surpassed by exciting new versions." Cheers to that!

The judges went above and beyond, tasting each medal-winning entry up to 12 times to ensure fairness and accuracy. In the end, they awarded an impressive total of 58 golds, 87 silvers, and 110 bronze medals

Australia really showed up at the awards, with Lyre’s taking home three gold, two silver, and six bronze medals, and Edenvale scoring two gold, two silver, and one bronze Other Aussie winners included Altina, Brown Brothers, Seadrift, Vintense, Loxton (Australian Vintage), Noot, Pernelle, Pure Vision, and Smug AF Cocktails.

These awards are specifically for products with alcohol levels of 0.5% ABV or below, reflecting the growing trend towards alcohol-free options worldwide Chrissie Parkinson and Chris Losh, the brains behind the competition, created it in 2022 to recognize excellence in the nonalcoholic drinks industry.

JUDGES TASTING NOTE

One judge summed this up with just two words: amaretto deliciousness! Textbook flavours of almond, marzipan, caramel and orange wrapped up in just the right amount of comforting sweetness with a lightly refreshing mint twist on the finish Excellent mixed with ginger ale, or on the rocks with a slice of orange.

JUDGES TASTING NOTE

A cheerfully exuberant black- and red-fruited bomb, this is classic sparkling Shiraz. Summer pudding flavoursblackberry, redcurrant, blackcurrant, strawberry - jostle happily together, with the carbonation and a touch of tannin providing structure, lift and freshness Good chilled but also has food-matching options

THE UP SIDE IS, THERE IS NO DOWN SIDE

Your perfect partner for socialising and relaxing. Award-winning alcohol-free cocktails containing bioactive adaptogens that help lift your mood and take the edge off your day.

Elta Ego are taking New Zealand by storm, with over 200 stockists!

As an advocate for alcohol-free living, Paul, the founder, along with his AF (Alcohol-Free) buddies, noticed a common trend at social gatherings: while their friends who drank alcohol seemed to get more energized and upbeat as the night went on, they often felt their energy and mood decline

This led to a bit of an internal struggle a battle between wanting to join in the fun without the fear of a hangover the next day, and not wanting to feel left out or judged We didn't just want to settle for a plain soda or kombucha It didn't quite hit the spot, and it seemed to invite comments like "don't be boring" from our friends who enjoyed their booze. Plus, many of those options were packed with sugar or caffeine, which wasn't ideal.

Instead, what we craved was something that looked, tasted, and felt like a fancy cocktail, but without the alcohol and its aftereffects.

But we didn't stop there We wanted our drinks to go beyond just being alcohol-free. We wanted them to be healthy too, packed with bioactive adaptogens that could boost our mood, confidence, and energy levels, helping us to socialize without compromising our well-being.

Through a rigorous scientific process, we discovered the perfect blend of these adaptogens a combination that not only made us feel good but also lifted our spirits in a gentle yet noticeable way.

And so, Elta Ego was born exquisitely crafted non-alcoholic cocktails designed to help you tap into your best self, your "elta ego," and connect with others in a healthier, more vibrant way. Cheers to that!

Based in Austin, Texas; Tennyson create an original combination of non-alcoholic liquid botanicals

In April they launched two new distributor supported markets for the brand after many meetings and searching for partners with aligning visions

Tenneyson say they are “building a liquor brand, that just happens to be non-alcoholic” with an aim to have bold and sophisticated AF drinks that stand alongside and hold their own against traditional brands

Tenneyson now have a network of retailers across the country, and these new partnerships show a real commitment to both growth and the learning required to really set themselves apart in the industry

New Partners are:

Tom has a wealth of experience in growing alcohol free brands through his current role and has seen Mavrik as an ideal opportunity to work closer with a brand to help them grow

CeroCero White Grapefruit & Lemongrass has won gold at this year’s San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

The SFWSC is the oldest and largest competition of its kind with medal winners ranging from some of the most renowned international distillers to small-batch producers What an exciting win!

BOISSON & BUST?

In a surprising turn of events, Boisson, the USA’s largest zero-proof retailer, filed for bankruptcy and closed all its stores in March, sparking concerns about the future of the category.

The rise of zero-proof drinks has been remarkable, offering alternatives that mimic the look, taste, and craftsmanship of traditional alcoholic beverages

Seedlip, paving the way in 2015, was soon followed by a flood of brands entering the market to cater to a growing demand for alcohol-free options Now, in 2024, the industry boasts hundreds of nonalcoholic wines, beers, spirits, and other ready-to-drink beverages, amounting to an impressive $11 billion in sales by 2022.

Amidst this surge, brick-and-mortar shops dedicated solely to nonalcoholic drinks began cropping up. Spirited Away, situated in downtown Manhattan, was among the pioneers, followed by several others across the nation Boisson, launched in 2021 in Brooklyn, quickly rose to prominence, expanding to Miami, Los Angeles, and eyeing international ventures

However, news broke in late March of Boisson’s closure, signaling a significant setback for the industry Founder Nick Bodkins announced the closure of retail locations and his departure from the company While the online and wholesale divisions remain operational, the abrupt shutdown raised questions about the stability of the zero-proof market

For independent bottle shop owners like Douglas Watters of Spirited Away and Aqxyl Storms of Minus Moonshine, Boisson’s closure was a concern but not a cause for panic. Despite challenges in profitability and high production costs, these shops continue to thrive, offering curated selections and specialized knowledge unmatched by larger retailers

Interestingly, New York’s liquor laws inadvertently favor nonalcoholic bottle shops like Spirited Away and Minus Moonshine, creating a unique niche market However, proposed legislation could change this landscape, posing new challenges for these retailers

The classification and target audience of nonalcoholic drinks remain ambiguous, with legal and societal gray areas yet to be resolved Despite these uncertainties and Boisson's collapse, nonalcoholic bottle shops remain resilient, focused on steady growth rather than explosive success.

As Storms aptly puts it, “not every business can be a Starbucks”, emphasising the importance of staying focused and forging ahead, one step at a time

GET READY TO MINGLE!

A few years back, Laura Taylor was gearing up for a trip to the Pocono mountains with her pals when she decided to shake things up a bit. Being alcohol-free, she wasn't satisfied with the typical sparkling waters and diet sodas available, especially when it came to socializing So, she embarked on a grocery store adventure with her daughter, picking up ingredients like lavender essence, juices, citrus, and herbs to craft her own mocktails

After whipping up three delightful concoctions, Laura found herself smitten with her favorite blend, which she promptly poured into a one-liter bottle for the trip The results? Well, let's just say she was thrilled "When I got back home, I was so excited that I didn't even say hello to my family. I went straight to my laptop to see what was happening in the world of adult non-alcoholic beverages," Laura recalled. "To my surprise, there wasn't even a name for it!"

In 2017, Laura took matters into her own hands and launched Mingle Mocktails, aiming to offer flavorful options for those skipping the alcohol or looking for mixers. Since then, Mingle Mocktails has become a standout player in the world of booze-free cocktails, catering to consumers seeking alternatives to traditional bar drinks

With seven delicious varieties like Key Lime Margarita, Blood Orange Elderflower Mimosa, and Moscow Mule, Mingle Mocktails offers a range of tasty options for any occasion. And just last month, they unveiled their newest flavor: Sparkling Raspberry Rosé, boasting 35% less sugar than a standard 4-ounce rosé

But Mingle Mocktails isn't just about delicious drinks it's also about inclusivity Laura designed the taste profiles to offer unique flavors that stand out without trying to mimic alcoholic beverages directly Instead, she focuses on essences like salt and lime in a margarita-inspired mocktail, ensuring that everyone can enjoy their creations, whether they're sipping solo or mixing it up with spirits. Looking ahead, Mingle Mocktails is poised for even greater success. By partnering with one of the largest U.S. alcohol wholesalers and focusing on expanding their existing lineup, they're tapping into a growing demand for zero-proof cocktails. And with the nonalcoholic drinks space expected to reach $30 billion by 2025, the future looks bright for innovative brands like Mingle Mocktails. As Laura puts it, "This category will continue to evolve and grow, offering more options for everyone to enjoy And we're excited to be a part of that journey!"

SOBER-CHELLA

mocktail parties and “euphoric” options found at Coachella this year

Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival just wrapped up its two-weekend extravaganza of music, fashion, and fun, and this year, some festival-goers are leaving with fewer hangovers than ever before!

For 2024, Coachella made sure to cater to shifting tastes and preferences by offering a wide range of non-alcoholic beverage options. This move reflects the changing interests of the festival's predominantly Gen Z and Millennial crowd, who are leaning towards healthier choices and steering away from excessive drinking.

But it's not just about sobriety; it's about inclusivity too. Coachella's expanded offerings include curated lounges and experiences designed specifically for sober and sober-curious attendees. Last year, they teamed up with The New Bar, a Venice-based "dry bar" and non-alcoholic beverage retailer, to provide exciting drink options for those looking to skip the alcohol.

According to Brianda Gonzalez, founder and CEO of The New Bar, the response has been overwhelmingly positive. People who hadn't attended Coachella in years because they were sober felt welcomed back into the fold. Others appreciated having refreshing drink options that allowed them to stay present and avoid the dreaded hangover.

This year, American Express got in on the action too, creating an immersive non-alcoholic experience for its members at the Coachella lounge. Together with The New Bar, they curated a menu that catered to the festival's young demographic, featuring non-alcoholic twists on classic cocktails like margaritas and cosmopolitans

And it's not just inside the festival grounds where you could find booze-free options Peripheral parties also embraced being alcohol free. Brands like Non and Celsius served up pre-made sparkling drinks and energy-packed mocktails, ensuring that everyone could join in on the fun, whether they were sipping cocktails or not.

Whether you're a die-hard Coachella veteran or a first-timer, there's never been a better time to enjoy the festival scene without the headache of a hangover

WORRY NOT, AT THIS POP UP!

Over the past decade, Portland’s nonalcoholic drink scene has undergone a significant transformation. What was once a rarity a mocktail on a menu has now become more commonplace Oregon proudly hosts its own zero-proof spirit brand and breweries, while local vintners craft nonalcoholic wines from state-grown grapes

But according to Canard bartender Cliff Seminerio, not all nonalcoholic (NA) offerings are created equal Even now, options can feel limited “I often see just one NA drink on menus, or a bartender’s choice,” says Seminerio. “Sometimes, when you ask for a nonalcoholic drink, you’ll get a puzzled look.”

Seeking to highlight the creativity and beauty of booze-free cocktails, Seminerio launched his first Worry Not event in the summer of 2023. These nonalcoholic cocktail pop-ups feature collaborations with Portland chefs, pairing exceptional food with Seminerio’s crafted NA drinks. Partnering with local zero-proof spirit companies like Wilderton, Seminerio creates thoughtful concoctions. But Worry Not isn’t just for sober folks; it’s an inclusive space for anyone to enjoy fantastic food and drink “None of the drinks contain alcohol, and they never will, but everyone can savor them,” he emphasizes.

Starting as a “not so boozy” brunch pop-up at Cooper’s Hall Northeast, Worry Not has evolved to feature chef Kevin Jones, known for his stint at Moonshot Their upcoming pop-up on April 28th promises a Southern-themed feast, including buttermilk-brined fried chicken and indulgent Mountain Dew cakes dubbed Gamer’s Delight Jones, an avid soda cake enthusiast, infuses his menu with childhood nostalgia and playful flavors.

Seminerio encourages chefs to experiment with the menu, but he also designs cocktails to complement the dishes. One creation features Wilderton’s Earthen spirit, simmered with Dr Pepper, burdock root, anise seeds, and caramelized sugar a twist on the classic Alabama Slammer Another concoction combines kojifermented peanut milk and Korean banana milk, inspired by Elvis’s favorite sandwich.

Known for his innovative drinks, Seminerio is expanding his reach. He’s developing a nonalcoholic beverage list for Heavenly Creatures and will soon teach NA cocktail classes at Kitchen Culture. His aim? To elevate nonalcoholic options citywide, catering to both drinkers and nondrinkers alike “I want to see folks freely switch between alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks,” he says. “They should hold equal importance on any menu.”

Mark your calendars for Worry Not on Sunday, August 28th, at CH Northeast. It’s a celebration of creativity, flavor, and inclusivity, one NA drink at a time

ALCOHOL FREE COMING IN FIRST

Get ready to cheer on your favorite athletes in Paris this summer with a refreshing brew in hand because for the first time ever, you can enjoy the official beer of the Olympic Games right from the stands But here's the twist: it's alcohol-free!

That's right, Corona, the beloved Mexican brand, is bringing its alcohol-free version to the Olympic stage, thanks to a groundbreaking sponsorship deal with AB InBev, the Belgian-Brazilian beer giant. This exciting partnership is just another sign of the growing popularity of zero-alcohol beers According to Krishan Maudgal, director of the Belgian Brewers Association, the trend towards alcoholfree or low-alcohol beverages is gaining momentum across the board. Even in beer-loving Belgium, where brewing traditions run deep, there's a shift towards lighter options

"It used to be all about increasing alcohol content, but now we're seeing the opposite," Maudgal explains "Consumers are leaning towards moderation and well-being, and brewers are listening " AB InBev, known for iconic brands like Stella Artois and Budweiser, is doubling down on the trend, ramping up production of its Corona Cero beer at its Belgian plant. And they're not alone brewers worldwide are investing in non-alcoholic options to meet the growing demand.

While non-alcoholic beer may have once been seen as a watered-down alternative, today's offerings are anything but bland. Brewers are investing in quality ingredients and innovative techniques to create brews that rival their alcoholic counterparts

The market for non-alcoholic and low-alcohol drinks, including beer, wine, and spirits, is now worth over $13 billion globally, with beer leading the charge In Europe alone, non-alcoholic beer sales are soaring, particularly in countries like Spain and Germany

In France, interest in non-alcoholic beers has been steadily growing, with sales now accounting for around five percent of beer sales in supermarkets It's a promising trend for brewers facing challenges like declining sales and economic uncertainty
