‘PATIENCE PRODUCES EXPERIENCE; AND EXPERIENCE, HOPE.’
In this season-opening concert, NOĒMA celebrates the 200th anniversary of Anton Bruckner (1824–1896) and pays tribute to the great Austrian composer’s life and music. Bruckner’s unaccompanied motets rank among the highest achievements of Roman Catholic church music, which have been staples of the standard choral repertoire ever since their composition.
Tonight’s programme is curated to highlight Bruckner’s virtues of patience in his relentless pursuit of perfection throughout his artistic life. It is divided into four themes: misery, wisdom, longing, and perseverance. Each theme features a well-known motet by Bruckner and two complementary works by Renaissance and contemporary composers.
Bookending the concert are two works that encapsulate Bruckner’s journey of sacred writings. Pange lingua (1835), a straightforward four-part setting, was Bruckner’s first-ever composition, written at the age of 11. Despite its simplicity, he revised it towards the end of his life in 1891. Both versions will be performed at the beginning of tonight’s performance, followed by the final verse from another setting of Pange lingua (1868). Vexilla regis (1892) was written just four years before Bruckner’s death while he was struggling to finish his ninth and final symphony. According to the composer, he wrote it ‘according to a pure impulse of the heart’, and it was his final work written for the church, making it a perfect closer for this programme.
Although Bruckner did not identify with the Cecilian Movement (a late 19th-century church music reform that aimed to bring back the ideals of 16th-century polyphony), almost all of his motets were written in the Renaissance style: Latin texts, point-of-imitation designs, and essentially an a cappella texture. Four such works will be heard throughout tonight’s concert. Christus factus est (1884) is rich with lavish harmonies, unprepared modulations, stark dynamic shifts, and jarring suspensions, all hallmarks of Bruckner’s mature style. Os justi (1879) is a most ‘purist’ product of Bruckner, using only the notes of the Lydian scale, with no sharps, flats, dominant sevenths, or second inversion chords. Despite the lack of these standard harmonic devices, the music feels effortlessly natural. Locus iste (1869), dedicated to the Votive Chapel of the new Linz Cathedral, celebrates a spiritual home. Its simple ternary form mirrors the symmetrical design of the great cathedral. Virga Jesse (1885), with a text from the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, prophesies the reconciliation of the ‘high’ and the ‘low’, closing with a jaunty alleluia.
Bruckner’s connection to the Renaissance style makes it fitting to include some of the most celebrated works from that era in tonight’s concert. The legendary Miserere mei, Deus (1638) by Italian composer Gregorio Allegri (1582–1652) was written for the Sistine Chapel. Made famous through myths and anecdotes, it includes thrilling ornamentations that soar to the iconic high C in the soprano part. Tonight’s performance follows a scholarly edition tracing the evolution of this work.
The concert’s second half opens with the ancient chant O virtus Sapientiae by German abbess and visionary mystic St Hildegard of Bingen (1098–1179), a celebration of the figure of Divine Wisdom.
Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (c1525–1594) is revered as the gold standard of Renaissance counterpoint. Set to the famous Psalm text ‘as the deer’, Sicut cervus (published in 1604) is one of his most performed motets. Less often heard is its rarely performed second part, Sitivit anima mea. Orlande de Lassus (c1532–1594), an exact contemporary of Palestrina, was by far the most prolific composer of the period. Gloriamur in tribulationibus (published in 1604) concludes in a lush backdrop of sustained long notes, accentuating the word ‘hope’, providing a resolution to tonight’s four themes.
Just as Bruckner embraced the seemingly simpler, more restrained world of Renaissance church music yet infused his unique voice, the four contemporary composers featured in tonight’s programme similarly forge their own paths from constraints to creativity.
Seeking, searching (2015/2023) is an awardwinning work by Hong Kong composer Chan Kai-Young (b1989). The eight-part a cappella writing is a setting of the lyric poem by Song Dynasty poetess Li Qingzhao (1084–1155). The music captures the aching emotional intensity in the poem with colourful text paintings while masterfully preserving the natural inflections of the Cantonese language within the contrapuntal texture despite its tonal constrictions.
Minimalist composer Arvo Pärt (b1935) and the younger post-minimalists Nico Muhly (b1981) and Caroline Shaw (b1982) all demonstrate an economy of materials, creating sonorities unique to themselves. Muhly’s I cannot attain unto it (2005), a setting of Psalm 139, repeats and cycles syllables in a hypnotic and devotional manner, using subtle rhythmic and metrical changes to propel the music forward. Audiences who enjoyed NOĒMA’s Hong Kong premiere of To the Hands last year will be no stranger to the work of Shaw, Pulitzer Prize winner. And the swallow (2017), also based on a Psalm text, paints a sonically rich canvas with parallel triadic motions and interweaving rhythmic patterns between the divisi parts within the choir. Pärt created ‘Tintinnabuli’, a compositional technique in many of his works characterised by juxtapositioning arpeggiated triads around a stepwise diatonic line. Nunc dimittis (2001) is no exception. Pärt sets the words by Simeon with an incredible sense of tenderness, followed by transcendent, sparkling joy.
From Bruckner’s profound musical devotion to his Renaissance influences and the voices of contemporary composers who evoke deep emotional resonance through simplicity, this evening’s programme journeys through timelessness and serenity.

Seeking, searching,
shivering silence.
Sorrow, suffering, stirring.
Shifting seasons of life
Seize sleepless souls.
Sipping a bit of wine
Cannot fight The breezy night.
Geese passing, Heart aching; Just as the memories stir.
Yellow petals clutter: gaunt and grim
Who would go pick them now?
Weeping window:
Who could withstand the dark?
Tall trees shielding the rain.
As night falls:
Pattering, clattering.
What a scene.
No words can gauge all the grief.
Translated by Kai-Young Chan
Gregorio Allegri
Have mercy upon me, O God, after thy great goodness.
According to the multitude of thy mercies do away mine offences.
Wash me thoroughly from my wickedness: and cleanse me from my sin.
For I acknowledge my faults: and my sin is ever before me.
Against thee only have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified in thy saying, and clear when thou art judged.
Behold, I was shapen in wickedness: and in sin hath my mother conceived me.
But lo, thou requirest truth in the inward parts: and shalt make me to understand wisdom secretly.
Thou shalt purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: thou shalt wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
Thou shalt make me hear of joy and gladness: that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.
Turn thy face from my sins: and put out all my misdeeds.
Make me a clean heart, O God: and renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from thy presence: and take not thy holy Spirit from me.
O give me the comfort of thy help again: and stablish me with thy free Spirit.
Then shall I teach thy ways unto the wicked: and sinners shall be converted unto thee.
Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God, thou that art the God of my health: and my tongue shall sing of thy righteousness.
Thou shalt open my lips, O Lord: and my mouth shall shew thy praise.
For thou desirest no sacrifice, else would I give it thee: but thou delightest not in burnt-offerings.
The sacrifice of God is a troubled spirit: a broken and contrite heart, O God, shalt thou not despise.
O be favourable and gracious unto Sion: build thou the walls of Jerusalem.
Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifice of righteousness, with the burnt-offerings and oblations: then shall they offer young bullocks upon thine altar.
Miserere mei, Deus, secundum magnam misericordiam tuam.
Et secundum multitudinem miserationum tuarum dele iniquitatem meam.
Amplius lava me ab iniquitate mea et a peccato meo munda me.
Asperges me hyssopo, et mundabor; lavabis me, et super nivem dealbabor.
Auditui meo dabis gaudium et laetitiam: et exsultabunt ossa humiliata.
Averte faciem tuam a peccatis meis, et omnes iniquitates meas dele.
Cor mundum crea in me, Deus, et spiritum rectum innova in visceribus meis.
Ne proiicias me a facie tua, et spiritum sanctum tuum ne auferas a me.
Redde mihi laetitiam salutaris tui et spiritu principali confirma me.

Sanders Lau is a multifaceted conductor with an unwavering conviction in choral music’s singular power to express and connect. He is the Artistic Director and founder of NOĒMA, and has established the choir as one of the most dynamic and innovative forces in the city’s choral landscape. Sanders believes home-bred professional choral performances will be vital in advancing the local scene. He is known for his approach to programme curation that sparks contemplation, blending standard repertoire with contemporary writings, many of which were Hong Kong and world premieres, in seamless narratives.
Sanders has also served as Resident Conductor with Die Konzertisten, where he has collaborated with a constellation of internationally renowned conductors, including Stephen Layton, Jonathan Cohen, and John Butt, and has cultivated a specialised interest in the historically informed performances of early music.
A highly sought-after choral artist, Sanders frequently guest-conducts, adjudicates, and offers masterclasses and clinics for eminent organisations such as the Hong Kong Arts Festival, Voices of Singapore Festival, and Hong Kong Inter-School Choral Festival. He is ardent about nurturing the next generation of choral leaders and has coached choirs from major universities in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macau, as well as numerous other youth and school choirs. His conducting courses have been attended by hundreds of school music teachers and young professionals, furthering his impact on the choral community.
In 2023, Sanders won the First Prize and two Special Awards at the Romano Gandolfi International Competition for Choral Conductors. As a tenor, Sanders recently debuted as the Evangelist in Bach’s St John Passion.

NOĒMA is a leading chamber choir dedicated to advancing Hong Kong’s choral scene. Comprising some of the finest local choral musicians, the group has quickly become one of the city’s premier ensembles under the dynamic leadership of Artistic Director Sanders Lau, who founded the choir in 2022. NOĒMA has performed to critical acclaim, with invitations from eminent presenters, including MUSE of The University of Hong Kong (HKU), Tai Kwun, and most recently, the Hong Kong Arts Festival in the soldout multimedia choral concert ‘Garden of Repose’. This cross-disciplinary performance was specifically designed and curated for the choir and has received high praise. It was nominated and shortlisted for the 2024 Classical:NEXT Innovation Award.
The choir’s ethos is centred on applying ideals of rhetoric –– the art of persuasion––to its performances, always exploring and harnessing the expressive landscape in its
repertoire. NOĒMA is known for its innovative and thought-provoking programming, creating profound dialogues among music, poetry, and spirituality, and reaffirming the relevance of choral art in contemporary society, offering a diverse and stimulating repertoire.
Collaborations are integral to NOĒMA’s endeavour. The group has partnered with artists such as the Cong Quartet, composer Adrian Wong, director/choreographer Ivanhoe Lam, and set designer Ruby Law. In the 2024/25 season, NOĒMA will again collaborate with Ivanhoe Lam in a multimedia theatrical performance as part of his artist residency at the East Kowloon Cultural Centre. Additionally, NOĒMA is partnering with the HKU Chamber Singers as part of the inaugural HKU Doming Lam Composition Prize, furthering its commitment to developing Hong Kong’s choral community.
