Since our inception in 2022, NOĒMA has been committed to delivering professional choral performances. We are immensely grateful to our audiences’ support in past performances at the Hong Kong Arts Festival, HKU MUSE, and Tai Kwun, which has propelled us forward.
This year marks an exciting milestone as we present our first fully-fledged concert season, featuring five unique performances across four thoughtfully curated programmes. Our repertoire spans from timeless masterpieces by Bruckner and Bach to works by leading contemporary composers, both local and international, including a world premiere.
We are incredibly excited to announce collaborations with two globally acclaimed awardwinning ensembles, Tenebrae and Vox Luminis, bringing choral singing of the highest calibre to Hong Kong audiences in three concerts.
We sincerely thank you for your continued support and invite you to witness NOĒMA’s growth and pursuit towards a new chapter for the local choral scene. Join us on a journey through profound musical landscapes that explore themes of devotion, grief, joy, and reflection, and experience the profound subtleties of life through music.
Sanders Lau is a multifaceted conductor with an unwavering conviction in choral music’s singular power to express and connect. He is the Artistic Director and founder of NOĒMA, and has established the choir as one of the most dynamic and innovative forces in the city’s choral landscape. Sanders believes home-bred professional choral performances will be vital in advancing the local scene. He is known for his approach to programme curation that sparks contemplation, blending standard repertoire with contemporary writings, many of which were Hong Kong and world premieres, in seamless narratives.
Sanders has also served as Resident Conductor with Die Konzertisten, where he has collaborated with a constellation of internationally renowned conductors, including Stephen Layton, Jonathan Cohen, and John Butt, and has cultivated a specialised interest in the historically informed performances of early music.
A highly sought-after choral artist, Sanders frequently guest-conducts, adjudicates, and offers masterclasses and clinics for eminent organisations such as the Hong Kong Arts Festival, Voices of Singapore Festival, and Hong Kong Inter-School Choral Festival. He is ardent about nurturing the next generation of choral leaders and has coached choirs from major universities in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macau, as well as numerous other youth and school choirs. His conducting courses have been attended by hundreds of school music teachers and young professionals, furthering his impact on the choral community.
In 2023, Sanders won the First Prize and two Special Awards at the Romano Gandolfi International Competition for Choral Conductors. As a tenor, Sanders recently debuted as the Evangelist in Bach’s St John Passion.
NOĒMA (νόημα) originates from classical Greek and means ‘the content of thought’. In the Renaissance, music scholars adopted the term to describe homophonic singing for its ‘sweetly stimulating and soothing effect on the ears and spirit.’ This duality mirrors the ensemble’s intellectual and emotional approach to music.
NOĒMA is a leading chamber choir dedicated to advancing Hong Kong’s choral scene. Comprising some of the finest local choral musicians, the group has quickly become one of the city’s premier ensembles under the dynamic leadership of Artistic Director Sanders Lau, who founded the choir in 2022. NOĒMA has performed to critical acclaim, with invitations from eminent presenters, including MUSE of The University of Hong Kong (HKU), Tai Kwun, and most recently, the Hong Kong Arts Festival in the sold-out multimedia choral concert ‘Garden of Repose’. This cross-disciplinary performance was specifically designed and curated for the choir and has received high praise. It was nominated and shortlisted for the 2024 Classical:NEXT Innovation Award.
The choir’s ethos is centred on applying ideals of rhetoric –– the art of persuasion –– to its performances, always exploring and harnessing the expressive landscape in its repertoire. NOĒMA is known for its innovative and thoughtprovoking programming, creating profound dialogues among music, poetry, and spirituality, and reaffirming the relevance of choral art in contemporary society, offering a diverse and stimulating repertoire.
Collaborations are integral to NOĒMA’s endeavour. The group has partnered with artists such as the Cong Quartet, composer Adrian Wong, director/choreographer Ivanhoe Lam, and set designer Ruby Law. In the 2024/25 season, NOĒMA will again collaborate with Ivanhoe Lam in a multimedia theatrical performance as part of his artist residency at the East Kowloon Cultural Centre. Additionally, NOĒMA is partnering with the HKU Chamber Singers as part of the inaugural HKU Doming Lam Composition Prize, furthering its commitment to developing Hong Kong’s choral community.
In commemorating the 200th anniversary of Austrian composer Anton Bruckner, NOĒMA performs some of his most beloved unaccompanied motets. The programme is curated to highlight Bruckner’s virtues of patience and perseverance in his relentless pursuit of perfection throughout his artistic life. It also features the famous Miserere by Allegri and works by contemporary composers, including Arvo Pärt, Nico Muhly, and Kai-Young Chan. This concert pays tribute to the master, leading the audience through a journey of timelessness and serenity.

Described as ‘phenomenal’ (The Times) and ‘devastatingly beautiful’ (Gramophone Magazine), award-winning choir Tenebrae is one of the world’s leading vocal ensembles, renowned for its passion and precision.
Under the direction of Nigel Short, Tenebrae performs at major festivals and venues across the globe, including the BBC Proms, Wigmore Hall, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Rheingau Musik Festival and Sydney Festival. The choir has earned international acclaim for its interpretations of choral works from the Renaissance through to contemporary masterpieces, and has commissioned new music from composers including Judith Bingham, Joanna Marsh, Owain Park, Josephine Stephenson, Joby Talbot and Roderick Williams. It has enjoyed collaborations with some of the UK’s leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, Aurora Orchestra, the Academy of Ancient Music and Britten Sinfonia.
Tenebrae has won two BBC Music Magazine Awards and an Edison Classical Music Award, and earned a Grammy nomination for its album Music of the Spheres. Its extensive recording catalogue comprises a wide range of music on labels including Signum, LSO Live and Warner Classics. The ensemble also undertakes regular session work, most recently contributing the vocals for the soundtrack to blockbuster sci-fi movie Avatar: The Way of Water (2022).
Alongside its performance and recording schedule, Tenebrae runs a thriving Learning & Connection programme, through which it works with hundreds of children, young people and amateur singers each year.

Inspired by the poetic nature of ‘komorebi’, the Japanese word for sunlight filtering through leaves swaying in the wind, this programme celebrates the serene joy of life in the simplest of things. Highlights of the concert include the world premiere of a new work by the promising Hong Kong composer Adrian Wong, which NOĒMA commissioned, and the Hong Kong premiere of Footsteps by the emerging British composer Owain Park. Additionally, the programme features three sets of French chansons by Paul Hindemith, Darius Milhaud, and Morten Lauridsen, all with texts by the great Austrian literary pioneer Rainer Maria Rilke, in celebration of the poet’s 150th anniversary. Like sunlight streaming through branches, these translucent pieces illuminate every subtle moment of joy and delight.

Founded and led by Lionel Meunier, the early music ensemble Vox Luminis has claimed the international spotlight with its unique sound. The group performs over 70 concerts annually worldwide and specialises in the 17th and early 18th-century English, Italian, and German repertoire, which can be heard on some 20 critically acclaimed recordings that have won them numerous awards, including the prestigious Gramophone Recording of the Year Award, BBC Music Magazine Award, and Diapasons d’Or. In their Hong Kong debut, Vox Luminis and Lionel Meunier will perform in two concerts. One will feature single-choir motets by the members of the Bach family, and in the other one, they will be joined by NOĒMA in performing the crown jewel of the baroque vocal repertoire: the double-choir motets by J S Bach. Without a conductor, the two choirs will deliver the unconfinable genius of Bach with a shared passion and sensitivity to ensemble singing, promising a stunning close to NOĒMA’s first fully-fledged season.

VOX LUMINIS
光輝之聲
From its first notes in 2004, early music ensemble Vox Luminis has claimed the international spotlight with its unique sound. Founder, artistic director and bass Lionel Meunier composed the ensemble so each voice can shine solo and merge into one luminous fabric of sound. The ensemble specialises in the 17th and early 18th-century English, Italian, and German repertoire, including masterpieces and lesser-known gems.
In 2012, Vox Luminis won the Recording of the Year at the prestigious Gramophone Awards. Since then, the group has made near 20 recordings with Ricercar, Alpha Classics, Ramée and Musique in Wallonie, and has won numerous international prizes including ‘Klara Ensemble of the Year 2018’, BBC Music Magazine ‘Choral Award Winner 2018’, 3 Diapasons d’Or and several Preis der Deutschen Schalplattenkritik. The ensemble received another Gramophone Music Award in the ‘Choral’ category for its recording of Buxtehude: Abendmusiken (2019).
Every year Vox Luminis gives over 70 concerts at major concert halls and festivals worldwide, including Bozar Brussels, deSingel Antwerp, Auditorio Nacional Madrid, L’Auditori Barcelona, Wigmore Hall London, Philharmonie Berlin, Lincoln Center New York, Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht, Musikfest Bremen, Bachfest Leipzig, Salzburger Festspiele, Aldeburgh Festival and Boston Early Music Festival.

Internationally renowned as the founder and artistic director of the award-winning Belgian vocal ensemble Vox Luminis, French conductor and bass Lionel Meunier is praised for his detailed yet spirited interpretative approach and is one of the most dynamic and highly acclaimed artistic leaders in historical performance and choral music active today.
Lionel’s international breakthrough came in 2012 with Vox Luminis’ Gramophone Recording of the Year Award for their recording of Schütz’s Musicalische Exequien. Vox Luminis has since toured extensively concert tours throughout Europe, North America, and Asia; established multi-season residencies at Wigmore Hall, Aldeburgh Festival, Utrecht Early Music Festival, and Concertgebouw Brugge; and about 20 critically acclaimed albums.
As a guest conductor, Lionel is in high demand worldwide and has worked with the Netherlands Bach Society, Danish National Vocal Ensemble, Netherlands Chamber Choir, Boston Early Music Festival, Juilliard 415, Orchestra B’Rock, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, and L’Achéron, among many others. Lionel maintains a close relationship with the Freiburger Barockorchester and regularly leads collaborative tours with Vox Luminis.
