Music Acts – DONAUFESTIVAL 2025

02.05.2025 FRIDAY

Klangraum Krems Minoritenkirche

Katharina Ernst / Michael Breyer / ATELIER-E: Polylog

18:00 – 19:00

Krems/Austria

02.05. bis 04.05 & 09.05. bis 11.05.2025

The Malaysian-Austrian artist and composer Katharina Ernst, who began her musical career playing the drums at the age of nine, has developed a unique approach to polymetric, odd rhythm structures at the intersection of music, fine arts, and choreography. At donaufestival, she will present the work Polylog, a complex experimental set-up of sound, imagery, and AI. Her live performance on drums interacts with video works by artist Michael Breyer using a tailor-made real-time system developed by Berlin studio ATELIER-E: an artificial intelligence analyses Ernst’s performance and generates a dynamic interplay with Breyer’s videos.

Keeley Forsyth

20:00 – 21:00 | Stadtsaal

Spectres of the past breathe life into this hauntingly powerful musical experience, driven by the raw emotionality of Keeley Forsyth’s singular voice. With an uneasy, trembling alto that calls to mind the intensity of Anohni, the British singer-songwriter weaves a soundscape that feels otherworldly unsettling, yet transformative. Trained as a dancer, Keeley brings her live shows to life with an electrifying physicality, delivering each moment with a steely, purposeful grace

Derya Yildrim & Grup Şimşek

21:00-22:00 | Halle 2

On her album Yarın Yoksa (If there is no tomorrow) Derya Yıldırım combines original compositions with traditional Anatolian folk songs and and gives them a psychedelic, hypnotic sound. Derya carefully transfers her family's cultural heritage into the present adding her own musical signature.Born in Hamburg, Derya grew up listening to Anatolian music and learnt various instruments at an early age, especially the bağlama, a seven-stringed Turkish lute. In 2014, together with the French musicians Graham Mushnik and Antonin Voyant she formed the band Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek, later joined by the South African drummer Helen Wells. The new album Yarın Yoksa combines tradition and innovation and deals with themes such as poetry and resistance, which are deeply rooted in Anatolian music. The album conveys a reflection on what really matters if there were no tomorrow

Liturgy

23:00 – 00:00 | Halle 2

For the last decade and a half, the New York band Liturgy has epitomised the secular turn in black metal music. They adopt the genre’s playing methods and styles but strip them of outdated religious semiotics – with role models such as Vlad the Impaler and Iannis Xenakis. At least that’s how the band’s singer and lead guitarist Haela Ravenna Hunt-Hendrix explains it. Together with her fellow musicians, she weaves garish bouquets of shrill noise arrangements and excitingly misleading metrics.

billy woods

00:00 – 01:00 | Halle 2

It’s all about revolution, in every sense: the liberation of the mind and the liberation of society, Karl Marx and James Baldwin resonate in the lyrics of this fantastic rapper as loud and insisting as Deleuze and Guattari’s “Anti-Oedipus.” And not to forget the superhero mutants of the X-Men comics. The traditions, references, and universes that billy woods mixes and rhizomatically intertwines in his tracks are so rich your head would spin – if it wasn’t for the clarity and incisiveness of his own head and language, and if the hazy beats he raps to weren’t so relaxed and (see above) mind-expanding. Richie Culver

16:30 – 17:30

Krems/Austria

02.05. bis 04.05 & 09.05. bis 11.05.2025

The sonic work of the artist, who also works as a painter, photographer and performer, combines influences from unruly outsider music, shivering industrial drones, drifting ambient streaks and anxious power electronics. These meet the effect-driven modulations of hypnotic spoken word passages. The result, for example on the current album Hostile Environments, is a dark cosmos of sound that evokes an existential unease about Britain's class society: Scream if you don't exist is the title of one of Culver's pertinent tracks.

Maria W Horn

18:00 – 19:00

Swedish composer Maria W Horn uses power electronics and acoustic instruments, a synthesis of digital and analogue methods to probe the very nature of human perception under extreme conditions: How does sensory deprivation or overload affect our mental states? At donaufestival, she will perform her work Panoptikon, a song cycle originally composed for the abandoned Vita Duvan panopticon prison in the northernmost region of Sweden. In Panoptikon, the imagined voices of the inmates are synchronised into a choir; while they strive for community, the sound is still trapped in the forced isolation of their individual cells

aya x MFO

20:00-21:00 | Stadtsaal

British producer Aya Sinclair interweaves vocal intimacy with abstract sounds. She sings and speaks autobiographical texts to clattering beats, growling and grinding, and intricately spiralling melodic motifs; ear-catchy sounds merge with disconcerting vocal distortions and poltergeist throbbing and grumbles. She performs at donaufestival with the light and video artist Marcel Weber alias MFO.

21:00-22:00 | Halle 2

Topsy-Turvy is the name of the new album by the band F.S.K. Since its inception in Munich in 1980, F.S.K. has been playing music for a world falling apart at the seams. At the same time, they’ve always been doing their best to turn things on their head. Topsy-Turvy is about Theodor W. Adorno and Claude

Sega Bodega

22:00-23:00 | Stadtsaal

Click-clacks and frantic hi-hats build a texture of itz-itz rhythms, finely minced vocal fragments roll backwards and slur, but there is also a lot of crying and rejoicing: Tears & Sighs is the name of a particularly beautiful song on Sega Bodega’s new album. The Irish-Chilean producer appropriates all the styles and techniques, all the speeds and temperatures found in the pop and club culture avant-garde of the 21st century in an eclectic yet always charismatic and personal way, weaving them into his autofictional confessional tracks. The latest album is called Dennis, which admits the inspiration of Dennis the Menace but is, needless to say, also “sinned” read backwards.

FIFTH

23:00-00:00 | Halle 2

The Brussels quartet FIFTH opens the treasures chest of voice, singing, and collective vocal improvisation. Roman Hiele, Victoria Palacios, Ferre Marnef, and Dennis Vanderauwera otherwise operate in the realms of post-punk and electronic avant-garde. As FIFTH, they have reduced their accompanying instrumentation to guitar, bass, and flute in order to free up more space for singing and extemporising together, more space to get lost and find each other again in choirs and canon structures: music in pursuit of the sounds and languages of healing in fragile moments of community.

Nídia

00:00-01:00 | Halle 2

Snippets of beats and vocals buzz through the air, polyrhythms and bass figures extrude under, over, and on top of each other. Kuduro is a mixture of African rhythms and European dance music, which originated in Angola. Lisbon is home to the producer Nídia, whose 2017 debut Nídia é Má, Nídia é Fudida ranks among the most important dancefloor records of the decade. Her latest album 95 MINDJERES is dedicated to the PAIGC brigadista freedom fighters who struggled against the colonial domination of West Africa in the 1960s

Mala Herba: Wounded Healer AV (with Joanna Zabielska and Alma Bektas)

17:30 – 18:30

Wounded Healer, is the name of the new album by Zosia Hołubowska alias Mala Herba. It combines sinister demonic incantations, pummelling rhythms, and ecstatic sounds: synth witchcraft says the Polish-born, Vienna-based artist. Vestiges of old gothic rock of Siouxsie Sioux mingle with all kinds of electronic trance. At Mala Herba’s concerts, this soundscape is augmented with ritualistic choreographies and visuals that envelop the senses and the body: creating a moment of communion and healing understood as a collective effort – that is the very aim of these extraordinary performances.

Rachika Nayar

19:00 – 20:00

These sounds carry us over glittering lakes and through iridescent rainbow-coloured mists, ascending to the highest heights only to plummet back down to the deepest depths: so many colours, shades, and temperatures Rachika Nayar wrests out of her electrically amplified guitar when she sends her sounds through distortion filters and electronic manipulators of all kinds This summer, Rachika Nayar and Nina Keith will release their first duo album: majestic and sublime otherworldly music.

SHABAKA

20:30 – 21:30

This music promises healing, and it brings comfort. With his powerful saxophone playing, Shabaka Hutchings has had a significant influence on jazz in the last decade, combining tradition and modernity, jazz, rock, electronics and Caribbean and African styles in his bands Sons of Komet and The Comet Is Coming. On his solo debut Perceive Its Beauty, Acknowledge Its Grace, he now plays exclusively on flutes and clarinets and is accompanied by harps and modular synthesizers: warm, flowing, oceanic music inspired by Alice Coltrane and the spiritual jazz of the seventies.

Stefan Fraunberger

17:00 – 18:00

Krems/Austria

02.05. bis 04.05 & 09.05. bis 11.05.2025

Quellgeister is the name of the musical cycle that the Austrian composer and artist Stefan Fraunberger has been developing for 25 years - all on dilapidated pipe organs in the abandoned fortress churches of Transylvania. Once built by ethnic Germans who fled the country during communist rule, the ritual machines were abandoned to the wilderness like stranded spaceships. On their corroded stop actions and with their perforated bellows, Fraunberger plays music that is as much about material transformation as it is about the collapse of opposites in our dawning epoch. After the crash is before the round of blissful spirits: Kuruzenaufstand, the fourth part of the Quellgeister cycle, will be premiered at the donaufestival.

Nadah El Shazly

18:30 – 19:30

Nadah El Shazly began her career in a punk band in Cairo, but on her debut album Ahwar from 2018, she already devised an electropop that combined Arabic and Western styles. She layers her dramatic, melancholic vocals with field recordings and electronic instruments. After touring non-stop, she recently appeared as a guest on the latest album by industrial-gospel formation Algiers. Her own music has recently become increasingly harsher, expanding her musical spectrum in the spirit of noise. The single Ghorzetein has already been released, the new album Laini Tani will follow at the beginning of June.

Use Knife

20:00-21:00 | Halle 2

Their music revolves around forced migration and displacement and the belief in life; it tells of the yearning for peace and a new beginning through the transformation of the old. Saif Al-Qaissy, Stef Heeren, and Kwinten Mordijck borrowed the name of their trio from a song by Current 93: “The stars spell grammar or use knife.” The project is a genuine fusion of Arabic and Western styles and mindsets. Straight techno beats are broken apart by complicated polyrhythms, looped samples of doholas, kishbas, and other Arabic percussion instruments. Demdike Stare

21:00-22:00 | Stadtsaal

Krems/Austria

02.05. bis 04.05 & 09.05. bis 11.05.2025

In 1612, Elizabeth Southerns, alias Mother Demdike, was sentenced to death in Pendle Forest in Lancashire, north-west England, in one of the most notorious British witch trials – albeit, before seeing the gallows, she died of old age in her cell. And from such a place emanates the music of the Manchester-based duo Demdike Stare: unrelenting pleas lament behind thick walls, stifled by clattering, sluggish rhythms and an occasional muffled drum thump. Every so often, a light chime of lute chords wavers above a cloud of magnetic bass and dub-like reverb.

bellows on a massive baritone saxophone accompanied, propelled, and sent astray by the raucous noise of a drum kit corrupted with grainy guitar distortion – that’s a possible take on the artistic concept of Joe Henwood and Tash Keary, who play their music under the easy-to-remember name O. And this concept is invincible, especially live. At this year’s donaufestival, O. will present their album debut WeirdOs, along with their latest single Green Shirt, a song about drummer Tash’s favourite shirt that was recently shredded by a hound dog.

Spiritualized

23:00-00:00 | Stadtsaal

Sound Of Confusion was the name of the 1986 debut album by the British band Spacemen 3 - in a way, they anticipated the motto of this year’s donaufestival. Jason Pierce, one half of that legendary band, has been making equally acclaimed music with similar inspiration since 1990 under the name Spiritualized. Pierce’s heavy walls of sound soar high into the sky, adorned latterly with brass, strings and choirs. Everything Was Beautiful is the name of their latest album and it was described by Pitchfork as “orchestral space rock with alchemical power”

00:00-01:00 | Halle 2

Pure joy, raw raving – and to the most exuberant beats imaginable: that is Kabeaushé’s artistic agenda. Times are dark enough, what we need is more light. Kabeaushé comes from Kenya, their latest album is called Hold On To Deer Life, There’s A Blcak Boy Behind You! To a fusion of old-school hip-hop with gnarly prog-rock guitars, Kabeaushé struts and dances in sable-fur royal robes. And in the wildest moments of their wild shows, Kabeaushé transforms into their alter ego The Shé.

Shovel Dance Collective

15:00 – 16:00

Krems/Austria

02.05. bis 04.05 & 09.05. bis 11.05.2025

The music of the Shovel Dance Collective is about the hardship, the beauty and the dignity of the simple life. Some of these songs are more than 400 years old – the nine-strong ensemble digs deep into the history of English, Scottish, and Irish folk music. And yet, the collective’s interpretations bring to light the modernity of these traditional dances and songs. They seek out the buried stories of workers, farmers, and peasants, tell tales of the worms that dwell in corpses, but also sing songs of salvation and strength. There is no centre and no leader in this collective; for the Shovel Dance folks, collective self-organisation is a lesson from the past and a political utopia. Visuals: Dasha Zvezdin.

Ernst Lima

16:30 – 17:20

Where do the boundaries between the analog and the digital, the physical and the virtual lie? Are such boundaries still relevant? Ernst Lima addresses these questions in transmedial installations and musical works which explore the interactions between technology, perception, and identity. The 2024 EP My Soul Is My Terror deconstructs sound into dense, fragmented textures. Raw guitar loops and experimental electronics merge into a floating, contemplative engagement with the speed of the now.

Singing black-lit liturgies of bog bodies caked in mud, entranced by nocturnal landscapes flickering in the moon-glow and powered by queer enchantment – the music of Welsh trio Tristwch y Fenywod in their own words. But Gwretsien Ferch Lisbeth, Leila Lygad, and Sidni Sarffwraig also sing about Sapphic love and pagan mysticism, combining leitmotifs from Celtic lore and mythology with insights from xenofeminist science fiction. All of their songs are sung in Welsh. Drawing upon ancient history, they envision a brighter future in which people will have escaped the prisons of identity and binarism.

Soulful suffering, emotionally dazzling, and yet utterly self-indulgently abstract, she incessantly breaks with all conventions of “female” or “male” singing. Giulio Erasmus and the End of the Worm

21:00-22:00 | Halle 2

The music of the Belgian quintet Giulio Erasmus and the End of the Worm feeds on the sonic and rhythmic experiments of the post-punk era, its sense for minimalism and reduction – and the sarcastic wit needed to counter the apocalyptic zeitgeist of the 1980s. The band say that their music should sound like collages that have just fallen apart. They always manage to create the greatest confusion with the simplest means.

22:00-23:00 | Stadtsaal

Lankum began their career in the Irish folk scene, but their musical inquisitiveness and innovative approach have always pushed them beyond its boundaries. With their 2023 album False Lankum, they definitely arrived in the avant-garde. They delve deep into the history of Irish and English traditionals, combining them with prog rock sound experiments and improvisation. Life-wearied songs of day labourers and peasant women of yesteryear are modernised with agonising playing styles from free jazz and bone-rattling extremo metal.

Yellow Swans

23:00-00:00 | Halle 2

The duo Yellow Swans from Portland, Oregon, deliver untethered, nerve-racking, ear-shredding noise. Around the turn of the millennium, Pete Swanson and Gabriel Mindel Saloman began thrilling audiences with their raging bass vibrations, convulsive spiralling whines and loops, and spiky lobe-mining feedback that floored listeners while uplifting their spirits. The Yellow Swans were instrumental in the burgeoning industrial noise scene of the noughties; after a fifteen-year break, they’re back on stage.

HHY & The Macumbas

00:00-01:00 | Halle 2

Krems/Austria

02.05. bis 04.05 & 09.05. bis 11.05.2025

Machines, ghosts and ghost-machines hurtle through the enigmatic music of HHY & The Macumbas, clattering, trotting, and marching, while beckoning horns call to battle or perhaps to prayer. Propelled by rattling drums with a magnetic bass buzzing underneath, their songs tumble forward, decimating everything in their wake. Those still recall the eighties might say industrial dub, but this mysterious Portuguese arkestra conjures its own worlds and echo chambers. Bom Sangue Mau is the name of their new album – good bad blood.

Jeff Mills presents Tomorrow Comes The Harvest feat. Jean-Phi Dary and Prabhu Edouard

18:00 – 19:00

In Detroit of the 1980s, Jeff Mills was one of the forefathers of the music that would later be dubbed techno; with Underground Resistance, he has defined the futuristic avant-gardes of the dancefloor for decades. And he never stopped developing musically. In his current project Tomorrow Comes The Harvest, he plays together with keyboardist Jean-Phi Dary and tabla virtuoso Prabhu Edouard. In their solo passages and collective improvisations, they fuse old and new genres of spiritual music. They branch out from the ecstasies of techno into the most diverse, sometimes even centuries-old traditions of musical mind-expansion.
