At the root of what makes Noah Homes such a unique place is not just the residents, it’s equally our staff.
Yet another milestone: we will host our 5th Enchanted Village this December. This event has grown to welcome more than 5,000 guests to Noah Homes, providing much-needed jobs for residents, raising awareness, and providing us with more than $200,000 in ticket sales and donations.
We depend on your donations and help in spreading the word about Noah Homes to keep our wages competitive, constantly train and mentor our junior staff members, and continue to provide the care our residents need.
At the root of what makes Noah Homes such a unique place is not just the residents, it’s equally our staff. People like Sandra Rocco-Melville, our COO, who started at Noah Homes 35 years ago as the House Manager at Casa de Esperanza in May of 1987. We now have more than 35 employees who have been at Noah Homes for five or more years. Together, they have provided nearly 1 million hours of care to residents since 1983! Even more incredible is the TEN residents who have called Noah their home for 35 years; two of those are original residents of 39 years!

Thank you as always for being an important part of our Noah Homes family.

Molly Nocon, CEO
Marc Iacono, President Board of Directors

I’m
In the midst of what’s being called The Great Resignation, in an industry with a very high turnover rate, it is these dedicated, selfless servants that I include among our healthcare heroes through the pandemic.
We continue to innovate, always looking for new ways to keep our residents healthy and happy. In our first year of PERCH (Positive Exceptional Relationships Create Happiness), our social membership club welcomed dozens of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities from Noah Homes and the community at large. For a $99 annual fee, PERCH members can participate in fun-filled activities that foster a culture of inclusion and result in new social connections.
In the meantime, I’d be forever grateful if you could help us honor Sandra and her 35 years of service to Noah Homes by matching her tenure with a gift using the remit envelope in this Navigator issue.
Speaking of connections, let’s make some! Now that we’re back open, we are looking forward to welcoming you, your family, friends, and colleagues to come to visit, volunteer, and help fund our future.
State of the Ark
calling this an anniversary issue and I am inviting you to celebrate with us! For starters, this January marked the 5-year anniversary of our Memory Care Homes. These are the first in California for people with developmental disabilities and now serve as a best-practice model that others are looking to replicate around the world. Since they opened, we have been fortunate to provide housing and care to 33 people in need, extending their quality of life as long as possible, surrounding them with love, joy, friendship, and more.

We believe Noah Ambassadors are well suited to educate and inform adults with disabilities, families and organizations about the range of housing and social options that are (and should be) available, and fight for their right to choose the option they prefer. This advocacy includes working with local, county, state and national government entities.
so nice to know that our residents are surrounded by a community of love. In true San Diego fashion, when we called Crumbl Cookies located in Santee and told them about Noah Homes, they did not hesitate to donate over 100 cookies to our residents to celebrate Valentine’s Day. The one-pound cookies made the day unforgettable. Each house received a variety of flavors, such as Oreo, peanut butter, and fan-favorite chocolate chip. In Casa de Flores, Adam was one of the first residents to greet the Crumbl Cookies team when they came to deliver the cookies. He was so excited to share his story about living at Noah Homes, but even more excited to eat the cookies! As soon as Casa de Flores received their box of cookies, they were immediately enjoyed, and not a crumb was left in the box!.
We are very thankful for our community partners who support Noah Homes in various ways. If you have a business and are interested in learning how to donate to Noah Homes, please get in touch with Katie Renvall, Philanthropy and Events Manager, at krenvall@noahhomes.org.

Volunteering comes in all shapes and sizes, and this was definitely no easy feat! Thank you to all our volunteers for your constant support of the folks of Noah Homes.
A: (Daimian): Making friends with the fellow volunteers - they really made the night something special.
Q: What advice would you give to someone volunteering at Noah Homes?
Bob Lingvall has dedicated his life to helping those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. From working as a recreational therapist to developing IT programs, he has constantly been a pillar of support for this community. He and his sons, Carl and John, love to come to Noah Homes and volunteer.
Bob (pictured with his sons John (left) and Carl (right)) loves the sense of community that Noah Homes provides.Isaiah and Daimian became fast friends during their time volunteering at the Enchanted Village.

Q: What motivates you to volunteer?
A: (Isaiah): Always smile and be positive. (Daimian): I would say make sure to help everyone you possibly can [at events like the Enchanted Village], so they can have a special night.
David and Ryan of Casa de Felicidad loved their quilts from Joan.

Q: What is your favorite project you’ve worked on as a Noah Homes volunteer?
Isaiah Dolley and Daimian Toma are two of Noah Homes’ rockstar student volunteers. A sophomore and freshman at Steele Canyon High School, the two of them have dedicated their time to serving the folks of Noah Homes, particularly during the holiday season. We had the opportunity to sit down with them and talk about what motivates them to volunteer, especially as high school students.
A: (Isaiah): Making others happy, meeting new people, and being able to help.
A: I’ve always had a heart for people who have had any struggle or challenge. Volunteering is an extension of where my heart’s been my whole life, and where it seems I keep ending up.
A: I think the most fun has been volunteering at Summerfest and the Enchanted Village. Even cleaning up the Village with everyone was fun. I’ve also enjoyed the times when we’ve had exercise classes with the folks. There is something wonderful about activities where people of all abilities are included. I feel very blessed to have that in my life.
Isaiah Dolley, Daimian Toma and Bob Lingvall Share Why They Volunteer
Over the holidays, the folks were surprised with over100 hand-made quilts sewn by Joan Dollar, the mother of one of our rockstar volunteers, Debbie Setzer. Each quilt was unique, and everyone was able to find one that was in their preferred style and color.
Q: What motivates you to volunteer?
Five years ago, our Memory Care Homes were built with the love and support of our community. We are proud to be one of the first memory care homes in the nation that are specifically for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The memory care homes, Casa de Lauridsen and Casa de Amor, have served 33 residents since opening in 2017.

2007: Noah’s Ark Angel Foundation was created
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, many but not all people with Down syndrome develop Alzheimer’s disease as they age. This is due to an extra copy of chromosome 21, which carries a gene that produces a specific protein called amyloid precursor protein (APP). Too much APP protein leads to a buildup of protein clumps called beta-amyloid plaques in the brain. The presence of beta-amyloid plaques is one of the hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease. By age 40, most people with Down syndrome have these plaques, along with other protein deposits, called tau tangles, which cause problems with how brain cells function and increase the risk of developing Alzheimer’s symptoms. Because of this connection, we are working closely with top researchers in the U.S. to better understand the disease and hopefully find a cure.

Meet Jerry Godinez – Our Dedicated Senior Residential Support Manager

Jerry Godinez has held every caregiving role within the homes since he joined in 2006. Now a Senior Residential Support Manager and Instructor since 2013, Jerry cares for our most fragile residents in the two Memory Care Homes. One of Jerry’s passions is mentoring and he has trained nearly 200 staff members on the National Task Group on Developmental Disabilities and Dementia practices, which allows them to work in this specialized environment. During the pandemic, he covered any and every gap in shifts that he could, and even volunteered to stay overnight in one of the houses to en sure the residents were receiving the care they needed. He is the type of leader anyone is humbled to work with and exudes the values of Noah Homes.

What’s Next? More Lifelong Homes for More People in Need
Like many, Sandra came to Noah Homes not quite knowing what to expect. Now, 35 years later, she’s what some liken to the wood that Noah Homes’ ark is made of, keeping us all afloat even in the most turbulent times. Through all obstacles and pivots, Sandra has remained steadfast in her vision and implementation at Noah Homes, ensuring that it thrives, providing best-in-class care for all residents.
Spring 20229
“My goal before retirement is to see the Noah Homes property fully developed as described in the Strategic Plan and see that Noah Homes has its funding not reliant on one entity,” Sandra said.
As parent and board member Debra Elwell explains, “Simply put, Sandra positively impacts others’ lives. Her caring character, encouragement, leadership, and commitment are unsurpassed. The model for Noah Homes, from a parent’s point of view, is exceptional and my daughter has blossomed.” Debra is far from alone in her gratitude to Sandra and her staff.
Sandra (right) with Molly, Jack, and Leona.
The length of our interest list is embarrassing. Our mission is to serve adults with developmental disabilities and we are so far from reaching the need that surrounds us. Over 850,000 people with intellectual and developmental disabilities live with an aging caregiver, often not living a fulfilling life despite the best intentions of family members. As we continue to outpace our peers in developing to meet the needs of our current residents, we are beginning to share our plans, projects, and inner workings with other organizations working to provide more homes to more people in need. Of course, most know that our “secret sauce” starts with our staff and your support.

She sets an incredible example for those who have joined in her footsteps – residents and staff alike. We are proud to share that Leona and Jack, two of our original six residents, still call Noah Homes their lifelong home. An additional nine residents joined Noah Homes the same year Sandra did (1987), and they still live at Noah Homes today, including Christine, Craig, Fran, Gary, Irene, Lawrence, Patrick, Pauline, and Vincent (pictured then and now at the bottom of the page).

Enchanted Village

Our events have transformed and grown over the years into fun-filled family events, fundraisers, and “friendraisers.” Keeping in mind that COVID guidelines continue to change, here are a few events we’re looking forward to hosting this year:
Events at Noah Homes

In a typical year, we invite families to Noah Homes to join together to meet other family members, residents, and house staff. Families are encouraged to ask their Residential Support Manager for updates as we work to get these scheduled.
Now in its 5th year, Enchanted Village is a large “friendraiser,” where we invite the public to come see Noah Homes and experience a winter wonderland with over 1 million lights, live entertainment, holiday celebrities, and more. In 2021 we employed 10 residents, welcomed more than 5,000 attendees, sold out four nights, and raised a record-breaking $270,000 to help us fund the programs and services we provide at Noah Homes!
“My Aunt Irene has been a resident of Noah Homes for over 30 years and I don’t think I realized just how blessed Irene was to be a part of such an amazing community. I supported Noah Homes financially from a distance, but was challenged to GIVE more this past year. I told myself, ‘Give beyond writing a check! Give beyond supporting a fundraiser! Give of yourself, Matt!’ Our company, Working to Give, did just that this past year and decided we’d be a part of their Enchanted Village. We built out a Christmas Kitchen for the event, serving hot cocoa and churros, and donated all the proceeds to Noah Homes. We raised over $21,000 in just a few days and mostly from hot chocolate –wow! Gosh, we had so much fun! During our time serving at the Enchanted Village, I knew without question that Noah Homes is the Gold Standard! This is just the beginning of our journey with Noah and hopefully, you will be inspired to GIVE too.”

In Memoriam: Kathy Blackwood | 4/02/1965 – 11/17/2021
Kathy also loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them, particularly her brother Barry and her sister-in-law Becky, who provided Kathy with a good quality of life and found Noah Homes for her so it could be her forever home and to live her later years fully.
9/13/1965 – 3/4/2022
John, lovingly known to all as the “Noah Homes Firefighter”, first moved into Casa de Palmas in July of 2009. He transitioned to Casa de Paz in February of 2017, where he lived until his passing in March of 2022.

By Jerry Godinez, Residential Support Manager, Casa de Amor
Kathy is missed by her many friends at Noah Homes, residents and staff alike as she was a joy and a pleasure to be with. Her laugh, giggles, and hugs were part of her amazing personality and she made everyone’s day just by running into her.

In Memoriam: John Himmelein |
John will be greatly missed by everyone at Noah Homes. We’ll always remember his endearing grumpiness, his “I love yous” and his warm and caring nature. He touched the lives of all of us, and we’ll treasure all of our memories with him forever.
By Valerie Davis, Program Support Specialist
May our sweet friend rest in peace as we cherish the moments we got to share with her.
John was a kind and gentle soul – endearingly stubborn in the best way, and forever young at heart. He never shied away from expressing how much he loved his family, friends, and staff. He wore many hats at Noah Homes – both literally and figuratively. He was our resident Padres, Chargers, Cleveland Browns, and Indians superfan, and was rarely seen without one of his favorite teams on either a t-shirt or a baseball cap. As the “Noah Homes Firefighter”, he made his rounds around the property donning his firefighter helmet and gear, letting staff know to call on him if they ever needed a hand. He proudly shared his love of the Beatles and Paul McCartney with all of us and enjoyed weekend trips to McDonald’s with staff, attending St. Madeline Sophie’s Center during the week, and visiting the administration office in the afternoons.
NOAH HOMES 12
Of all the many things he loved – Pepsi, Hershey chocolate bars, baseball season, fire trucks, and the like – his greatest was his family. He shared an unbreakable bond with his older sister Debbie and loved spending weekends with her. John adored his older brothers and was always eager to tell staff about their family’s home state of Ohio. The youngest of his own siblings, he became an older brother figure to many of the staff in his house – one moment trying to prank or tease you, and the next telling you that he loved you, or asking if you were doing ok.
A social butterfly, Kathy enjoyed interacting with people, posing for pictures, and flirting playfully with the guys. With a great sense of humor, Kathy would come up with funny comments and remarks that made people laugh while she would giggle in response. Kathy was a fan of dancing and was always one of the first ones on the dance floor. She liked to dress up and show off her ample collection of jewelry.
Kathy was a loving and charming lady. She enjoyed attending day program at St. Madeleine’s Sophie Center for several years and was particularly fond of the beautiful garden as she could express her affection for plants and flowers. At her home, at Noah Homes, it was not uncommon to see her walk around the premises picking up flowers to give away to her friends or to wear on her hair and ears. Many of us still remember her waving happily at the swings at the bottom of the property - one of her favorite places on earth.
Kathy moved into Noah Homes in February of 2017 to Casa de Paz. That same year, in December, she was welcomed to the Memory Care Homes where she stayed until her peaceful passing.

At the event, Philip Curtis was awarded Noah Homes Board Member of the Year for his consistent dedication to his duties and to Noah Homes. In 2021 in particular, Philip dreamed up yet another innovative way to bring more awareness to people with developmental disabilities and reasons to support our cause. Philip sponsored a radio package with 30-second radio spots primarily on 101KGB FM. We were able to bring several residents, staff, and family members into the studio to help share our story from their own point of view. We also were excited to welcome radio personality Tommy Sablan, known on-air as “Little Tommy,” for a tour of Noah Homes and to meet our folks. Over a six-month span ending in December, this radio campaign helped us bring more people to the Enchanted Village and helped us make many more friends.

Board of Directors: End of Year Celebration + Board Member of the Year

Noah Homes Board of Directors and Noah’s Ark Angel Foundation Board of Directors gathered in December to celebrate the end of a historic year. Both Boards and Noah Staff met for a small, in-person event for the first time in two years. Many remarked how, together, they felt the full strength behind Noah Homes. Both Boards are filled with extremely generous community leaders who have helped Noah Homes soar to new heights. President of the Noah Homes Board, Marc Iacono, shared that the gathering served as a reminder of how wonderful Noah Homes is, because of the staff, families, residents, and members of the community.

After enduring more than two years of a pandemic, we are thankful for our health and our ability to once again see our loved ones. Unfortunately, the aftermath of the storm has left a lot of cleaning up to do and your support is needed while Noah Homes continues to navigate these turbulent waters. The Great Resignation is among us and while Noah Homes is looking to fill open positions, they are also working to keep the amazing caregivers who have become extended members of the residents’ families over the past 35

— Charles Dickens [and Jim Provencher]
We are proud to share that Jennifer Goulet was selected as Board Member of the Year by Noah’s Ark Angel Foundation. Jennifer has served on Noah’s Foundation Board since its inception and has been very instrumental in keeping in touch with donors throughout the years. She has personally hand-written thank you notes to every donor and is always first to volunteer when a new campaign kicks off. As a talented interior designer, Jennifer plays a vital role in conceptualizing elements of the Enchanted Village each year, which brings more than $200,000 in funds to Noah Homes.
“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair [setting up a financial planning meeting with Jim to discuss incorporating Noah Homes into your plans].”
Board Chair Emeritus
celebrates a double-digit billion-dollar surplus, Noah Homes and other service providers across the state are not seeing their rightful share, leaving us to fill the gaps to ensure adults with developmental disabilities have lifelong housing options, friends, and an active life like the rest of us. As a parent of a child with a developmental disability, I continue to be disappointed by the lack of understanding that many in power show in allocating funding. At the same time, it is people like you who give me hope. And there’s even some policymakers weaved in, thankfully!

It’s this continued fluctuation in government funds, even at the “best of times” budgetwise, that makes it even more obvious why we need to free ourselves from relying on the government for funding and instead, look to self-sustain Noah Homes in perpetuity using the annual interest from our Foundation funds. With that, I ask you to set up a meeting with me sooner than later to discuss your financial goals and how you can incorporate Noah Homes into your investments, tax planning, estate planning, and more.

In Gratitude, Jim Provencher
Jennifer’s brother, Michael, is a resident at Noah Homes, who also just so happens to be roommates with Jim Provencher’s son, Ryan (Jim is the President of Noah’s Ark Angel Foundation). Having a close relationship with the residents has enabled Jennifer to serve as a trusted ambassador for Noah’s Foundation and she has successfully enlisted several San Diego leaders to also serve as board members, volunteers, and donors.

In gratitude for the nurturing and loving care made possible by Noah Homes staff and supporters for Francesca and all Noah Homes residents, as well as to help ensure the continued distinguished quality of care for Noah Homes residents in the future, it was Joan’s heartfelt wish that Noah Homes receive the significant gift from the Bear Family Estate that followed her passing in 2016.
Knights of Columbus and Noah Homes have had a wonderful relationship, dating back many years. Noah Homes is often the recipient of the donations earned from their Tootsie Roll drives, and Noah’s Ark Angel Foundation proudly welcomed the return of the Knights of Columbus on behalf of Noah Homes.

Knights of Columbus Donations Roll In
CEO Molly Nocon with representatives from local chapters of the Knights of Columbus.
e are forever grateful to our anonymous donor who first established our matching gift commitment, and to each person who contributed and helped us meet our match in just under a year. A huge thank you to the Bear Family, who finished off our campaign and established a perpetual gift estimated at $250,000, for the benefit of Noah Homes, in honor and loving memory of Joan and Ted Bear.
In 1986, Joan and Ted Bear selected Noah Homes as the primary care provider for their beloved daughter, Francesca, who was one of the original residents of the newly built Casa de Fe. Over the years, Joan and Ted were active supporters and sponsors of resident activities.
W
Now that they are returning to ‘normal’ activities, several chapters have once again stepped up and resumed their generous donations, including Knights of Columbus Councils 1349, 9776, 3667 and 9710.
A Loving Gift from the Bear Family
These donations have an even greater impact because they have been matched by the generosity of Noah’s Ark Angel Foundation Founder and Chairman Emeritus, Peter Ferrantelli and his wife Mary Ellen Ferrantelli.

Thank you so much to the Bear family for your continued support of Noah Homes and its mission!
Securing the Future
Thank you to the Knights of Columbus for making Noah Homes one of the beneficiaries of your Tootsie Roll Drive every year.

directly impact the lives of our residents and ensure that our community continues to deliver the highest quality of service to our residents. We are eternally grateful and look forward to our continuing relationship with the Knights of Columbus chapters in San Diego.
