The Power of Playing . . . G A M E S There are real advantages to playing games, whether it’s card or board games like Pinochle, Bridge, Canasta, Dominoes, Chess, or even Bingo; the benefits to your overall health and wellbeing are numerous. Simply playing games on a regular basis can reduce stress through connections with social networks. Spending time with friends and people with similar interests can help increase positive thoughts, and feelings, which leads to laughter that can help boost your immune system and endorphins. Games can also take your attention from both physical and emotional pain. The benefits of playing strategic problem solving games, where quick scoring and decisions are required, include sharpened math and memory skills, quicker response, and balanced muscle memory. It’s not just the tactics of the games that aid in mental fitness but the pure joy and social connections that can open up the neuro pathways for more relaxed and calculated decision-making. Bingo is another popular game with positive impacts. Researchers have found that playing bingo has multiple health benefits. It takes concentration - which improves listening and short term memory skills, while promoting socialization - which is essential to maintaining a happy and healthy lifestyle. Being a part of a regular bingo group provides the opportunity to stay acquainted with friends and

even make new ones. People that stay connected through social interaction have a much slower decline; both mentally and physically than those that are socially isolated. Do you prefer more physically active games? Try Pickleball. While it is a strategic game that can improve flexibility, stamina, and coordination, it is fun and quick to learn. It is easier on your joints than tennis and can be played indoors. For a schedule of places and times to Pickleball, please see Pages 10 & 12. Playing games outside is the ultimate health booster. The advantages of spending time outside and in nature are endless and include stress alleviation, mood enhancement; connection to the world around you, and a dose of Vitamin D. Adding a game to the mix will benefit your overall outlook and challenge your abilities. The games and benefits are endless.
