A day after battling party leaders in the one and only English language debate, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau touched down in Iqaluit touting his government's pledge to fight climate change and promising to eliminate diesel from all Indigenous communities by 2030.

It was Trudeau's third visit to Iqaluit this year. He arrived Oct. 8 after 1 p.m., approximately one hour late, to the press conference held in Sylvia Grinnell Territorial Park with his two children – Ella-Grace and Xavier Trudeau – and Megan Pizzo-Lyall, the Liberal candidate for Nunavut in the upcoming federal election.

Pizzo-Lyall quietly stood by Trudeau at the podium, as he spoke to the local and national media plus the New York Times and German Television about the Liberals' plan to fight against climate change and protect the environment.

"We'll conserve even more of our land and water. We'll help home-owners retrofit their homes. We'll build an economic ecosystem that drives clean tech innovation. We'll ensure that all Indigenous communities are off diesel and instead powered by clean affordable energy like hydro by the year 2030. We'll hit net zero emissions by the year 2050," promised Trudeau.

When asked to elaborate on how he plans to get Indigenous communities off diesel, he offered no further information.

Similarly, when Nunavut News asked how many homes the Liberal government would promise to build in Nunavut over the next four years, the Liberal leader responded very vaguely.

"We put forward a national housing strategy that is focused on building affordable infrastructure right across the country but it's obviously not a cookie-cutter model that will be the same everywhere," stated Trudeau.

He asserted the Liberal party's plan to meet the needs of Nunavut communities is "significant" and "ambitious."

Several times, Trudeau made an effort to suggest unlike the Liberals, the Conservatives do not have a real plan to fight against climate change and to protect the environment.

The lone Nunavut seat in the House of Commons was held by Conservative Leona Aglukkaq from 2008 to 2015. She's trying to reclaim her seat against a slate of candidates that include Pizzo-Lyall, the NDP's Mumilaaq Qaqqaq and the Green Party's Douglas Roy. The current MP, Hunter Tootoo, who won as a Liberal in 2015 before leaving the party in 2016 to sit as an independent, is not seeking re-election.

Trudeau promised, if re-elected, to work in close partnership with Indigenous peoples and hopes to take the burden off the shoulders of future generations by addressing climate change.

Following the 30-minute press conference, Trudeau, his children and Pizzo-Lyall were driven to the Elders' Qammaq in downtown Iqaluit. Trudeau walked around the cozy Qammaq introducing himself, his children

and his candidate to elders as media took photos. There were about 20 elders, who all seemed very happy to meet the prime minister.

After the brief 10-minute visit, Trudeau went to chat and take photos with the public, who had been patiently waiting outside the Qammaq. There was a small crowd of 50 to 100 people consisting mainly of students and Liberal supporters. The atmosphere was energetic as many individuals were excited to meet and take photos with Trudeau.

After the event, the Liberal leader immediately departed to the airport for his next campaign stop, Toronto.

Pizzo-Lyall was later interviewed by local media only.

In response to how the Liberals plan to get Northern communities off diesel, she replied, "Well it is not going to be easy. It's an ambitious plan but we are going to work towards that in the next four years."

As we close in on the Oct. 21 federal election, Nunavut News contacted the four individuals who have entered the race to become the territory's member of Parliament.

Leona Aglukkaq, Conservative 1) My top three priorities are the same top issues that come up at the doors: affordability, mental health and infrastructure, which includes our housing crisis.

The number of people who have told me they are living pay cheque to pay cheque and finding it difficult to make ends meet is heartbreaking.

Mental health doesn't affect individuals, it affects us all. I want to support the training of Inuit mental health workers in addition to territorial and community-based healing programs to tackle the current crisis of suicide and violence in Nunavut. It is important to

have culturally-sensitive, Inuit- solutions.

6) The Conservative Party of Canada agrees with the appeal.

Megan Pizzo-Lyall, Liberal 1) For me, the three most important things are helping families, protecting the environment and helping our elders. The Liberal team's plan is going to put more money in families' pockets and help more Nunavummiut find safe, affordable homes.

Our plan also protects the environment and reduces our carbon emissions. Elders are essential to our communities and that's why I'm proud to be running on a plan to help even more elders age with dignity.

2) Housing is one of my personal priorities. In August, the Liberal g o v e r n m e n t ᒪᐃᒋᓐ worked with ᐱᑦᓱ-ᓚᐃᔪᓪ Nunavut to commit $290 million to build and retrofit homes in Nunavut. It Megan will take some Pizzo-Lyall time for all of those homes to be built, but we have committed the money.

Also in our platform are commitments to help people retrofit their homes to make them energy efficient.

3) In the North, we understand that climate change is real. A price on pollution like the one in place helps lower emissions, while understanding the unique nature of life in the North by making exemptions for our flights and electricity. A carbon price is only one part of our plan. We will get the North on renewable electricity by 2030 and have committed to net-zero emissions by 2050.

4) As I have been knocking on doors and visiting communities, I have been repeatedly impressed by Nunavummiut innovation and collaboration.

In remote communities, we often find new ways to work together. I think it is an important lesson that others can learn and benefit from.

If something is working for one community, maybe we can try to expand or replicate it in other communities.

5) I had the great pleasure of bringing Justin Trudeau to Iqaluit this week. I was able to take him to Sylvia Grinnell Park, as well as to the Elders' Qammaq. We also held a public event where anyone could come and ask him a question

or say hello.

Overwhelmingly, people told me that they know that he cares about us as Inuit and Nunavummiut.

6) The most important thing is to get this right. Right now, because of the election, we can't have the conversations and collaboration that are of utmost importance.

I believe that collaboration, rather than litigation, is the best way to right historical wrongs and advance reconciliation and I am proud to run with a team that has committed to engaging in discussions around compensation for the benefit of those individuals impacted.

Mumilaaq Qaqqaq, NDP 1) Using the wealth tax to increase quality, affordable housing. Implementing the United Nations Declaration on the rights of Indigenous Peoples into law. With this we can see institutions that reflect our culture and have the right to self-determination.

Youth engagement – everything from childcare increasing to post-secondary opportunities in Nunavut. We need to support and encourage our youth to excel at all levels.

2) New Democrats will address the Indigenous housing crisis and put an end to chronic overcrowding and long wait lists by working with Indigenous communities to implement co-developed Inuit housing strategies. These innovative, ground-up strategies will mean sustainable and dedicated funding to meet the needs of Indigenous peoples.

We believe that the federal government must immediately step up to tackle the mould crisis affecting tens of thousands of homes and provide support for Inuit to ensure that their homes are safe and ᒧᒥᓛᖅ ᖃᖅᑲᖅ healthy.

We will also ensure that Indigenous communities have the resources to make homes Mumilaaq greener and Qaqqaq more energy efficient, working to keep the benefits of good jobs, training and investment close to home.

NDP will invest $5 billion to kick-start the plan, along with waiving GST/HST on construction of new units, double new home buyers tax credit for purchase of a home and reintroduce 30-year mortgages for first-time buyers.

3) New Democrats will put reconciliation at the core of this effort, upholding Indigenous knowledge and respecting inherent sovereignty.

We recognize that Indigenous peoples have intimate connections to their homelands, territories and resources and have provided stewardship since time out of memory.

Still lots of election jobs up for grabs Scores of temporary positions exist in the lead-up to the Oct. 21 federal election

Plenty of ballots will be cast during the Oct. 21 federal election and many temporary jobs have been created in relation to the exercise in democracy.

Close to 200 part-time workers will be needed on election day and approximately 70 employees will staff advance polls, according to Matthew McKenna, a media relations specialist with Elections Canada.

"There are still many vacant positions and we'd encourage anyone who is interested to get in touch with the local Elections Canada office in Iqaluit," McKenna stated.

"We have every hope that we'll be able to find enough Nunavut residents to be able to fill all the vacant positions. We're committed to reaching full staffing levels, though, so if there is a need to look at recruiting from outside of the territory it is something we will consider doing."

Nunavut returning officer Valerie Beaulieu Blanchette is "well aware" of the importance of hiring poll workers who speak the Inuit language and she is "making every every effort to do so," said McKenna.

Wages for poll clerks start at $15 per hour. Other jobs associated with the election include registration officers, information officers and central poll supervisors.

There are mandatory three-hour training sessions prior to beginning employment with Elections Canada but trainees get paid to learn, McKenna noted.

Not every community will have an Elections Canada employee on site throughout the election period, but all communities will at least receive elections services from visiting officials, he said.

Elections-related jobs wrap up immediately after Oct. 21, except for the returning officer and assistant returning officer.

During that time, Blanchette has

fielded numerous questions. She regularly informs people of office hours, polling locations, voting dates and whether residents appear on the voting list, she said.

Pay interest – and attention – at Canada's bank Northern News Services

Justin Trudeau worked a stump speech in Iqaluit into the half-week between the English- and French-language leaders debates last week.

Just when Nunavummiut planning to vote Oct. 21 were aching for more meat on the bones of the Liberal plan for the Arctic, the prime minister landed on Baffin Island like the bowhead whale that washed up on shore near Kugaaruk a few weeks ago.

Trudeau pledged to get Nunavut off diesel by 2030 during a stop in the capital Oct. 8, but had nothing to say on how that would happen.

He iced the cake with another vague promise to make Canada completely net-zero on carbon emissions by 2050. Maybe his daughter Ella-Grace, who tagged along, can follow through on that one.

Or maybe Baffin Island will be underwater. What Northerners need now is for the federal parties to have a focused and costed plan for Nunavut, the Northwest Territories and the Yukon for the coming decade, not "if" and "when" charts set a generation in the future.

Jagmeet Singh, the leader of Canada's New Democrats, has also said some nice things about the North.

The NDP generally seems to be a

friend of the North, but they're unlikely to form government, or even the opposition.

With the exception of the Orange Crush half a dog's age ago, Canada's perennial bronze medal finisher has had the luxury of being able to say whatever they want and contradict whomever they choose for decades.

The Greens have a platform that could be from a science fiction novel and their chances of forming government are not much better than those of the People's Party of Canada, which makes them a non-entity.

A Northerner's energy is better spent focusing on what the Liberals and Conservatives are proposing.

Stephen Harper's Conservatives had interest in the Arctic, but they alienated Indigenous groups with a heavy-handed approach. To be taken seriously North of 60, they'll have to prove they're capable of rebuilding those bridges and working with Inuit and other Indigenous governments.

This might include a re-evaluation of their definition of "consultation."

Going net-zero will have to include getting Nunavut off diesel generators sooner than later.

There will be no energy independence in the North while its energy supply arrives by barge.

There may be just three seats in the Northern territories – less than one per cent of the House of Commons – but the fuel for Canada's GDP comes out of the ground here.

Nunavut has five national parks and two brand new marine areas with special protections.

Whether you bleed green and feel for the birds and seals or lean right and see the natural gas underneath them, the North is Canada's bank and at the bank, you have to pay interest. You should be paying attention, too.

That means looking after the people looking after the vault. That means Northerners need to be a part of Canada. That means unlimited data. Cheap power, including home heating oil. Reasonable prices at the grocery store.

These are things we don't have yet.

What we do have is low educational achievement, high unemployment and inadequate housing. Plus limited infrastructure connecting it all and those boil water advisories.

Addressing these issues could be described as Canada's obligation to the North.

Our obligation to Canada is to keep the feet of our elected leaders to the fire.

Embrace attitude of gratitude When you live in a community for a length of time you begin to recognize the attitude and intent of people's involvement in the framework of the community.

In most cases we have good people joining us and help in shaping the direction and growth of the people. Many institutions are introduced and as we understand the motive behind these organizations we as locals also embrace the purpose of these institutions.

The government of Nunavut has a strong positive mandate outlined in the eight principles of the Inuit Qaujimajatuqannit and these should be embedded in our minds and hearts for a harmonious existence.

There is room for discussions and opinions to be expressed and as the principles say, decision-making through consensus.

This also means goodwill or good spirits and inclusiveness.

As we engage in our social structures we need to remember why we want to be involved and what kind of impact we wish to demonstrate.

Let's explore one or two ideas: for those who open their homes as temporary or foster parents, you are providing comfort, assurance and protection for the child or children who were removed; for those who listen to an individual who is telling their story that stirs you inside and make you realize how fortunate you are in your world of stability and

When a community event takes place and many hands are needed you put your name forward and you help in making the event happen smoothly. As you are going through the motions of 'volunteering' you are not seeking attention to yourself but in service to the community members.

As you are serving the community members you are doing so with the hope that those you serve are growing mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually.

This kind of attitude allows those you serve to reach out and strengthen relationships with their spouses, family, children and society in general.

This kind of positive growth stirs the community members to think outside the box and to live the IQ principles to the fullest.

Let's put away selfish motives and embrace an attitude of gratitude that is inclusive and welcoming.

Dear editor, TMAC Resources Inc. ("TMAC") would like to inform readers of Environment and Climate Change Canada's ("ECCC") October 2, 2019 press release entitled "Nunavut-based mining company fined for failure to comply with Metal Mining Effluent Regulations" that it contains information that is misleading and factually incorrect.

The press release leaves the impression that TMAC polluted. This is untrue. The ECCC press release is in reference to actions that took place in 2015. At that time, the Doris Mine was not in production, no mine tailings were being produced and no tailings were yet deposited into the completed Tailings Impoundment Area (TIA). However, melt water and rainwater was accumulating inside the TIA and required decanting as a normal part of facility operation.

In its submissions to the Court on sentencing, ECCC acknowledged that one of the key sentencing factors in this case was that there was no proof of actual harm and very little potential for harm given that TMAC sampled, tested and analyzed the water in compliance with its Water Licence prior to discharging it.

TMAC did not pollute. The water discharged met all water quality criteria in TMAC's Nunavut Water Licence and in Schedule 4 of the Metal Mining Effluent Regulations (MMER, now named MDMER), including 100% survival of species tested for acute lethality.

At all times, TMAC was transparent about the discharges.

It reported them in its monthly reports to the Nunavut Water Board ("NWB"), which were available on the NWB's website.

Unfortunately, based on an erroneous understanding of the applicability of the MMER, TMAC did not report the discharges to ECCC and ECCC subsequently determined this was required under the MMER. TMAC's error in not reporting to ECCC was unintentional.

TMAC genuinely believed that the MMER reporting requirements had not yet been triggered. Similar discharges of melt water and rainwater had been made from 2011 to 2014 when ECCC affirmed that reporting of such discharges was not required under the MMER. TMAC has admitted and will pay a fine of $50,000 for contravening Section 78 of the Fisheries Act that requires that ECCC be informed of a discharge of effluent from a metal mine.

In accepting the plea and the joint submission on sentencing, the Court accepted that TMAC's actions fell just short of the standard of due diligence and rejected the Crown's argument that TMAC was wilfully blind to the triggering of the MMER.

Readers Write These are important facts that ECCC has left out of the press release and did not make it into the Nunavut News story.

ECCC's press release also makes reference to TMAC being added to the Environmental Offenders Registry. The Environmental Offenders Registry includes offenders that have breached the Pollution Prevention Provisions of the Fisheries Act (section 34 to 43). TMAC pled guilty to what is essentially an administrative error in not filing a report with the ECCC. TMAC did not offend any of the Pollution Prevention Provisions of the Fisheries Act. TMAC has requested that ECCC revise the press release to more accurately reflect the facts as set out in the Agreed Statement of Facts accepted by the Court. TMAC has also requested that ECCC take immediate action to remove the reference to the Environmental Offenders Registry from its press release and to ensure that TMAC is not added to the Environmental Offenders Registry.

Bowhead washes ashore near Kugaaruk

Kugaaruk A dead bowhead whale came ashore approximately 80 kilometres from Kugaaruk a couple of weeks ago.

It was approximately 40-feet in length.

"Nobody went down to check and see why that bowhead was found dead," said Raymond Kayasark, chair of the Kurtairujuark Hunters and Trappers Association in Kugaaruk. "Ice is forming already so I don't think they'll go down with a boat."

A spokesperson for Fisheries and Oceans Canada said the federal department became aware of the whale through social media posts. Fisheries and Oceans staff have since contacted the Kitikmeot Regional Wildlife Board to determine the feasibility of a site visit to collect biological samples and additional information for investigation, the department stated in an email to Nunavut News.

Kayasark said he'd previously heard of a bowhead washing up on shore around 10 years ago but acknowledged that it's a rare occurrence.

Although polar bears were feasting on the latest carcass, the meat of a discovered dead animal is too risky for human consumption because it could be rotten, Kayasark noted.

Principals gathering

Iqaluit/Kivalliq Nunavut school principals and other education staff gathered to network, update their training and learn new skills in Iqaluit last month.

The Nunavut Principals' Conference ran from Sept. 21 to 27.

Principals from all regions attended the gathering focused on Safe and Caring Schools.

The principals learned a number of strategies for ensuring safe and healthy schools in order to foster optimal academic, social-emotional and cultural growth.

Those who attended the conference returned to their communities, students and coworkers with sharper tools in their schoolbags, such as learning to become a better ally, practical ways to help students self-regulate their behaviour and best practices for a trauma-informed school environment.

The great fish head giveaway

Kugluktuk Two freezers full of char heads are being given away in Kugluktuk.

The heads were donated over the summer by local fishers, who received gift cards in return. Close to 500 gift cards were distributed, estimated Danielle Adjun, assistant manager of the Kugluktuk Hunters and Trappers Organization.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada – still known as DFO to many – is analyzing samples taken from the fish heads to determine the status of Arctic char, which are a popular meal.

"The population was declining so the DFO decided to do a study," Adjun said.

The fish remains are free for residents to pick up. Each bag contains five to 10 char heads. As of Oct. 8, Adjun guessed that close to 30 bags had been handed out.

Some are good for making soup, others don't look as appetizing so they're better used for dog food, according to Adjun.

A smaller number of salmon heads were also available.

Advisory lifted

Baker Lake The community of Baker Lake had its boil-water advisory lifted Friday, Oct. 4.

Also in Baker, the Baker Lake Celebration of Hope will take place on Saturday, Oct. 26 and Sunday, Oct. 27, from 7 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. at the Qamanittuaq Recreation Centre And, finally, the Community Health and Wellness Committee is now running a sewing course being delivered at the wellness building from Oct. 8 to 31 from 6:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m.

The sewing program is being instructed by Alice Mannik.

Participants are learning to sew parkas, wind pants, an amauti and atayuks.

Bringing back the talent show

Taloyoak An annual talent show had been a well-received event in Taloyoak for years but it faded away.

Now the community's recreation committee wants to revive it, said Nathan Mannilaq, Taloyoak's recreation co-ordinator.

The show may be held later this month or in November, he said.

The event will offer cash prizes for entrants in adult, teen and children's categories.

"There's really talented people here in town," Mannilaq said. "It's mainly singing and dancing."

Close to 100 elders from across Nunavut and the northern Quebec region of Nunavik came to Iglulik for a gathering Aug. 12 to 17.

The senior citizens ate together, played together, discussed tradition and

also talked about common issues they face.

"We have learned a lot about each other and everybody had a great week," Iglulik recreation staff member Qumangaapik Arnatsiaq said of the eventful occasion.

How many Nunavummiut will vote this time?

More Nunavut residents voted in 2015 than 2011

Crystal Martin-Lapenskie plans to vote in the federal election on Oct. 21 and she's encouraging others to do the same.

"It's important because it's what's going to be priority for the next four years for Canada," said MartinLapenskie, president of the National Inuit Youth Council. "It doesn't take too much time out of anybody's day (to vote) ... It's not just a constitutional right but it's something we have fought for for so many years –

women who have fought to vote and Indigenous people who have fought to vote."

Among the longstanding Inuit issues that she hopes Canada's next prime minister and cabinet will address are the chronic housing shortage, suicide rates and making health care more accessible.

"A lot of it's been talk. It would be nice to see some action," said Martin-Lapenskie, who grew up in Hall Beach and currently resides in Eganville, Ont. "I really do hope that they're able to combat the epidemic of suicide and the housing crisis as well."

Nunavut voting demographics

- The age group with the best voting rate among women in the 2015 federal election was 35-44 year olds at 66.7 per cent - Among men it was 55-64 year olds who were most active at the polls with 60.8 casting a ballot - Overall, women in Nunavut voted more often than men in 2015: 57.8 per cent compared to 48.7 per cent Source: Elections Canada

Nunavut had the lowest showing at the polls of any province or territory in the 2015 federal election at 53.1 per cent. Prince Edward Island posted the highest result at 80 per cent. Nationally, 68.5 per cent of eligible Canadians cast a ballot.

However, Nunavut's voter turnout improved by 13.7 per cent in 2015 compared to the 2011 federal election. The reason for the jump is difficult to pin down because there are numerous potential factors, according to Matthew McKenna, who works in media relations for Elections Canada.

Among Elections Canada's efforts to raise the profile of the 2019 federal election were attending several events in Iqaluit this year including the Nunavut Tradeshow and a workshop for Inuit electors. Elections Canada contractors Ilinniapaa Skills Development Centre, based in Nunavut's capital, also help spread the word about the election, as has Frontier College, McKenna noted.

A diverse ad campaign that entails English, Inuktitut and French advertisements on TV, radio, in print and in digital is another of Elections Canada's tools.

In some of the smaller communities, the returning officer enlists the

aid of RCMP officers to explain how to register and vote, said McKenna, who referred to the police as "great partners."

Other initiatives in Nunavut – Canada's largest electoral district in terms of geography – include inperson training for Elections Canada staff.

"Because of the size of the territory and the distance between communities, in the past, training election workers was often done by phone," McKenna explained. "For 2019, (we realized) the importance of being able to see and touch the election materials they'd be working with has a huge impact on workers."

This also includes simulating voting activities, "to give people a real sense of what to expect," he added.

The returning officer puts a priority on making Inuktitut voting materials accessible in the territory, according to McKenna.

"The (returning officer) says demand for these materials has been high," he stated.

On election day, polls will have the option of having one designated elder and youth present to provide interpretation and to answer questions about the voting process, McKenna added.

Iqaluit Amateur Hockey Association joins in on World Girls Hockey Weekend

Every year, there's a weekend set aside for girls hockey players to get out on the ice and play with other girls and just enjoy playing.

That weekend was Oct. 4 to 6 as World Girls Hockey Weekend happened around the planet and the Iqaluit Amateur Hockey Association joined in on the fun with other cities and leagues on Oct. 5 at the Arnaitok Arena for a fun day of skills, drills and games.

Alexia Cousins, the association's vice-president of female hockey, helped to put on the day's proceedings and said nearly all of the 50 girls signed up to play this season turned up.

"Our youngest group, the initiation-novice group, had a few missing but the other two groups had just one or two missing," she said.

"It's so good to see interest in girls hockey growing."

The initiation-novice division was first up on the ice and they played chariot races with the goaltenders from the bantam-midget division and some small-area games, said Cousins.

"We have some of our initiation players still learning to skate but we have some real strong novice girls," she said. "It was a chance for them to get their feet under them and get used to the ice."

The atom-peewee division had 19 players come out to play and that meant there were

The tour begins Kangiqliniq/Rankin Inlet The first stop on the 2019-2020 Nunavut Open Volleyball Tour is coming up and it's one of the biggest tournaments in the territory.

The annual Laura Gauthier Memorial Volleyball Tournament is set to happen from Oct. 25 to 27 in Rankin Inlet with men's and women's divisions in play. Anyone who plays must be 16 years of age or older although there is one spot open on

enough players to have a full-ice game.

"We split the girls into two teams with two lines each," said Cousins. "The older girls were on the ice to help out."

The bantam-midget group was the last to do their thing and they stuck to skills competitions, which included a game of 10-puck, where players took turns trying to beat the goaltender.

The winning team was able to choose the punishment for the losers, which Cousins said turned out to be two hard laps of the full ice surface.

There was a party to be had once it was all done which included pizza, cake and drinks for everyone along with some extra goodies.

Any team which is signed up for the tour will receive points toward their tour total. The top four men's and women's teams following the completion of the tour will be invited to Iqaluit to play in the Nunavut Open.

The deadline to register for the tournament in Rankin Inlet is Oct. 21.

Six months to go Whitehorse The 2020 Arctic Winter Games in Whitehorse is now six months away and the preparations for the nine delegations is continuing.

Representatives from all nine were in Whitehorse for what's known as the Mission 2 meetings on Oct. 8 and 9 to go over how the preparations are going for each team and to get an update from the Games' host society on how things are coming along.

"Some of the parents brought Timbits and other treats for the girls," said Cousins. "The older girls got a toque and we gave the younger ones a buffer-style neck warmer."

This year's event was a change from the last two years as it was held on ice at the Arnaitok Arena. The previous years saw the girls playing on the gymnasium floor at Inuksuk High School.

"It was good to get them on ice skating this year," said Cousins. "I was so happy with how everything turned out and it was very successful. It's the first time I've been involved in this and everyone who came out made it a lot of fun. It's got me looking forward to the rest of this season."

Mariele Depeuter, Nunavut's chef de mission, was supposed to be there but she wasn't able to make it in due to weather issues.

Kyle Seeley was there as a representative of the Games' International Committee.

Shuffle up and deal Iqaluit There was more poker to be had in Iqaluit earlier this month.

Inuksuk High School's U18 girls soccer team held its latest Texas Hold 'Em tournament on Oct. 12 at the school's cafeteria. Everything began at 1 p.m. with players buying their way in with the entry fee of $100. If any player ran out of chips within the first two hours of play, they were able to re-buy their way in with another $100.

The top six finishers received a piece of the prize pot, the amount of which wasn't known as of press time.

The apprehension and excitement is beginning to build as Rankin Inlet's longawaited new arena nears completion.

The arena is expected to come in over its original $26-million price tag but the hamlet is hoping to be handed the keys by Oct. 21.

The building will also be fitted with artificial turf as soon as the ice goes out, making it a true year-round facility.

League-and-tournament player Lee Kreelak said the new arena is long overdue in Rankin.

He said, despite all the delays, he never doubted for a moment Rankin would get the arena because he knows how hard recreation coordinator David Clark has worked on the project for the past 10 years.

"I had no doubt in my mind he would eventually get it done with all the various parties he was dealing with," said Kreelak.

"I actually started working in the new arena as an electrician, but it wasn't for me, so I took a job with Agnico Eagle.

"I'm trying to stay in shape and get myself ready for the big event this hockey season which is going to be in that building.

"It has a bigger ice surface and I'm getting a little

Artificial turf will be installed every year after the ice comes out of the new Rankin Inlet arena, making it a true year-round facility for the community. older, but I'm really looking forward to the start of the season."

Kreelak said finally having washrooms and a shower in the dressing room is going to make a big difference for all the kids playing minor hockey in Rankin, as well as those playing in the senior men's league.

He said once you walk in the building you immediately see the rink and, with the addition of the radio booth and beautiful new bleachers, both players and fans are in are for a great season.

"You look at all the tournaments this community hosts during the season and this new building is going to add even more excitement to each one.

"And it is a community effort – from the referees to the players to the coaches – everyone has to put their work.

"It's the first year with a brand-new arena and a brand-new outlook. It's also probably going to help build our young players' futures with more hockey programs being held and everyone

having more drive in a new arena.

"Just to be in a new arena will be like fuel for our young guys."

Level III hockey official Kyle Tattuinee said the new arena is a huge upgrade from what the community had previously and it will be nice to not have it be -60 C inside the arena when it's -60 C outside.

He said he's looking forward to officiating in the new arena and, with the extra size of the ice surface, there may even be occasion to use the four-man system

during tournaments.

"There were times people were wondering if this was ever going to happen, with plans being in place for more than five years and nothing taking place," said Tattuinee.

"Then, the year before last they started putting it up.

That's when you started really feeling like we were finally going to have our new arena.

"It's going to be awesome for our minor hockey players to start the year in this new building. They're going to be super excited and there's nothing like the thrill they'll get from skating on a brand-new ice surface in a beautiful new building.

"It's also going to be excit-

ing for the senior players who played so many years in our old arena, but I can't wait to see the kids' faces when they start skating on an NHL-sized rink."

Tattuinee agrees the new arena should also add even more prestige to the tournaments Rankin hosts.

He said the new building may even lead to bigger things.

"Who knows, maybe the Arctic Winter Games can come here now that we have a beautiful new arena.

"They could look at splitting the hockey between Rankin and Iqaluit.

"We've got a new barn so we might as well put it to its full use."

Alright, let's dive right in and see if we can't exacerbate the NBA-China situation anymore than it already is, shall we?

So we know by now that China isn't happy with the NBA. Specifically, it's Daryl Morey, general manager of the Houston Rockets. Morey tweeted out his support for a free Hong Kong based on what's been happening in the autonomous area of China. There's been weeks of fracas and the situation is about to boil over any minute.

And we all know how China can deal with situations that get out of hand, right? with James McCarthy Anyway, the Chinese government didn't like the fact that someone had the nerve to give an opinion and acted swiftly, as did several Chinese-based businesses. CCTV, the national broadcaster in China, decided not to broadcast the game between the Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn Nets in Shanghai on Oct. 10 in response to what's happened and Tencent, which is the Chinese broadcasting partner with the NBA, is planning on revamping its coverage of the league.

I say fine. Let China do what it wants. Why is it that China gets the right to determine what people can say in their own country? This didn't happen in China, it happened in the U.S. Last time I looked there's a thing called the First Amendment of the United States Constitution which guarantees people the right to say things that other people may not like. If you're offended, that's your problem.

I quite like living in a society where I get to write something like this and know that I won't have to answer to some government flack or deal with any sort of repercussions like being sent to a re-education camp or something along those lines.

Which is why I'm confused with how the NBA is handling this.

Sure, NBA commissioner Adam Silver is publicly saying he stands by Morey and his right to say what he said but privately, you know he's huddled with his closest advisers and trying to figure out the next step. I can almost predict what will happen next: Silver will come out with some sort of apology and try to save face, much like other companies have done when China decides to police the speech of others who don't live inside its borders.

This is the same Adam Silver who rightly came out strongly against Donald Sterling, former owner of the Los Angeles Clippers and his racist remarks in 2014 and the so-called "bathroom bill" in North Carolina in 2016. His reaction to this? Something close to "Gee, we didn't mean to make everyone angry." Pathetic.

Even the players and coaches have been mum on this matter. This same group of moral betters who will tell you how they feel about just about anything are now either being muzzled or are passing it off with excuses ranging from they need to do more research to no comment. Rank hypocrisy if ever there was. So much for being woke, eh?

Morey has been silent and deleted his now infamous tweet since it blew up. The team's owner, Tilman Fertitta, dressed him down in public and said Morey doesn't speak for the team.

Fine, but he's still entitled to his opinion, whether you like it or not. What you're reading here is my opinion and if you don't like it, fine. That's the beauty of the country we live in.

The Houston Rockets drafted Chinese force of nature Yao Ming in 2002. In 2019, the team's owner, Daryl Morey, has ruffled feathers in the All Star's homeland. That's their problem, our columnist writes. one part. The big T.V. contract for the NBA doesn't lie within China but North America. The rights deal over here is worth $24 billion over nine years and that's what the NBA needs to be concerned with. People who buy tickets to go to games are living here, not in China. The largest chunk of merchandise is sold here, not in China.

Something I thought I would never see in this current political climate is politicians from both sides of the aisle in the U.S. banding together to tell the NBA to stand up to China.

When you have Ted Cruz and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on the same page, you know this is serious and good on them for coming together, even if it is on just this one issue.

In any event, this is going to end well. China knows it can play this game every time and they'll be able to fell the house of cards every time. The NBA can surprise me, though. It can stand up to China and let it know that we are allowed to say what we want in this part of the world.

I won't hold my breath, though

Federal candidates talk climate change Nunavut's, from page 4

To make full and equal partnership the basis of Canada's efforts, New Democrats will ensure that First Nations, Inuit and Métis leadership have a seat at high-level decisionmaking tables to help direct climate change efforts in Canada.

We will also expand the Indigenous Guardians Program, invest in Indigenous-led science and support the creation of Indigenous-managed protected areas – and make sure that species recovery efforts respect Indigenous rights and embrace traditional knowledge to increase biodiversity.

It is fall time up here in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut as the snowfall has left beautiful land and sea all white, the Arctic Ocean is now slowly freezing up and all ponds and lakes are pretty well settled for winter now.

We have had beautiful snowfalls and a little bit of rain that freezes then it makes it slippery on the roads in town, please be careful when walking or driving.

Weather up here is certainly changing with climate change and it is starting affect our people who always go hunting and fishing out on the land and sea. It is dangerous right now to not go on the ice to travel or icefish as it is just starting to freeze.

Please stay off the ice.

Those who love to go hunting now travel on land by ATVs for now. Later on when the ocean is thick enough then people can go icefishing and hunting with snowmobiles and alliat (wooden homemade sled).

We use to watch caribou and omingmait

(muskox) migrating from Gravel Pit going to Ovayok (Mount Pelly and area), but not anymore.

It has been hard without caribou on the island, but people still go hunting to 30 Mile and mainland and other hunting spots. Caribou are now so scarce that we have to order tuktu from other communities, if anyone does get tuktu, it is not enough and is shared still with family and Elders in our community of Cambridge Bay. We will have foxes, wolves, lots of different species of birds, geese, ducks, fish, rabbits,and much more, occasional polar bears wandering close by town.

Hunters in town usually monitor the bears and chase it or them away from the community. We also get grizzly bears now on the island, couple of times we had whales, both narwhal and beluga, coming into the bay. Not very often I have seen whaling in my community in my lifetime anyways.

People from Kugaaruk are very successful with whaling so a lot of residents share or order muktaaq from there. Soon people will be able to go ice-fishing for red-bellied char up at Ovayok and other lakes nearby Cambridge.

Now that Christmas is close by again,

everyone will be busy sewing and carving, saving up for Christmas gifts and trips out of town. Haven't heard when the annual Christmas bazaar is yet, usually one in November and a last chance bazaar in December.

The Cambridge Bay Childcare Society is again holding the annual dinner and auction to raise funds to help operate the centre and keep it in operation, supplies, toys etc.

This year's theme is INUINNAUYUGNA. Such a beautiful theme. The dinner and auction will be held on Saturday, Nov. 30.

Tickets will go on sale soon.

Any donations for auction items will be appreciated. Please contact Denica Nahogaloak, Manager of the daycare centre.

Good luck to all our candidates who are running for election on various positions in our wonderful community. Please watch for notices, times, dates, polling stations to go vote. Voting day is Oct. 28, and the advance poll is Oct. 21.

This year I saw posts on Facebook that there is mail-in voting being held also, along with mobile polls. Again please listen to your local radio stations, posters and announcements for voting day.
