In an article in the last edition of Nunavut News/ North ('Where is the action?', Nunavut News, May 11 edition), Jean-Yves Duclos's role with the federal government was incorrectly identified. We regret the error and apologize for any confusion or embarrassment it may have caused.

News Briefs Liquor bound for Deline seized Deline Alcohol bound for Deline was intercepted by police Thursday night. It's the second liquor seizure carried out by Deline RCMP in the span of a week.

Open alcohol was also observed in the vehicle, states the news release.

On Feb. 1, Deline RCMP seized 51 bottles of vodka, whiskey and beer during a traffic stop.

Only certain amounts of alcohol can be brought into the community in a 24-hour span under the NWT Liquor Act. Police charged the unidentified driver and their passenger under the NWT Liquor Act and both were issued a ticket, say police.

Iqaluit RCMP lay cannabis trafficking charges Iqaluit A 30-year-old Iqaluit man allegedly selling cannabis outside of a local store on May 1 is facing two charges.

The RCMP have charged the accused with possession of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking and selling cannabis to an adult. There was no indication of the quantity of the drug in the RCMP's news release issued Tuesday afternoon.

The man is not being held in custody. He's scheduled to appear in court on June 10.

Although Cannabis is now legal in Canada, Nunavut RCMP would like to remind residents that they can only purchase cannabis from licensed retailers. The Nunavut Liquor and Cannabis website has more details at: http://www. nulc.ca.

Pangnirtung man accused of attacking fellow prisoner Pangnirtung A 19-year-old man is facing a charge of aggravated assault following an incident in Pangnirtung on the evening of May 8 when a fellow prisoner was attacked and seriously injured in an RCMP jail cell.

The 54-year-old victim was transported to the health centre in Pangnirtung and later medevaced to Iqaluit for further treatment. He's in stable condition and expected to make a full recovery, according to police.

William Lawson was charged and has been released with conditions following an appearance before a justice of the peace. Lawson is due back in court on Aug. 17.

Hay River adopts new tourism plan Hay River Hay River politicians approved a new tourism strategy recently.

The new plan, which replaces the previous one created in 2012, includes numerous goals, initiatives and strategies, such as attracting more rubber-tire tourism, developing infrastructure to showcase the natural environment and culture, developing infrastructure such as Porritt Landing and the Fisherman's Wharf Pavilion, diversifying tourism products and services, beautifying the community, supporting Indigenous tourism, promoting sports tourism, attracting tourists en route to Yellowknife, and more.

Town SAO Judy Goucher said the plan is still valid despite being written before the pandemic.

"I think that everyone in the Northwest Territories ... expects that tourism over these next several months will not be anywhere near the levels that they would have been."

Wider than a mile

Norman Wells-based helicopter pilot Dennis Rusch flies for Canadian Helicopters, sometimes on fire fighting missions, other times building utility infrastructure.On May 11 he was doing maintenance on communications towers in the region. He snapped this photo of the break-up on the Mackenzie River about 22 kilometres east of Norman Wells, near Prohibition Creek. "It was amazing to see," Rusch said. "I've lived and flown in Norman Wells for six years and never seen a breakup that dramatic."

Nunavut Covid rules to remain in effect There's rapid testing capacity in Iqaluit now, but not Rankin Inlet

With still no Covid-19 cases in Nunavut, the question remains when restrictions will be loosened in the territory.

On April 29, Nunavut's chief public health officer put forth criteria for easing some of the restrictions. The criteria included: no active cases of Covid-19 in the territory, achieve diagnostic capacity within the territory and a significant indication of decreased rates of Covid-19 in the jurisdictions of Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta, and Northwest Territories.

At least two of the three conditions have to be met before gradually lifting any

restrictions.

Iqaluit's GeneXpert rapid testing device for Covid-19 was validated on May 8. This means there is testing capacity presently available in Iqaluit.

However, on May 11, Patterson revealed the rapid testing device in Rankin Inlet still needs to be validated.

"When that's complete, then we'll be looking at easing restrictions," said Patterson, adding he is uncertain when the machine will get validated.

Despite having the testing machines in the territory, test samples will continue to be sent south for further assessment, Patterson stated. During Nunavut's first positive Covid-19 case, which turned out to

be a false positive, the samples from contract tracing were first sent to Iqaluit and then to a lab in Ontario for confirmation.

Patterson said the first steps for re-opening the economy will probably involve opening up daycares in reduced capacity; opening some service work requiring one to one contact; and allowing larger groups to gather outside.

"I'm hopeful that as early as sometime next week we can begin easing some of the restrictions," Patterson said on May 6. "But I don't want to commit to a definite date until we've got the (testing) capacity fixed."

As of May 11, 285 people were being investigated for Covid-19 and 553 were cleared.

Road to Behchoko rocky, 'dangerous' says driver 'Highway patrol is not out there at all'

Leon Lafferty was driving down Highway 3 between Behchoko and Yellowknife when a golf ball-sized rock struck his truck.

Left with a cracked windshield, the Behchoko resident and former community chief was angry. It wasn't the first time he's encountered spilled rock along the stretch of road.

"It's dangerous," Lafferty told News/ North. "Somebody could get hit with a rock and have a blowout and have an accident."

Lafferty said the large rocks left on the road are the result of overfill spills from commercial contractors hauling crushed rock.

He wants the government to do something about it.

"Their loads need to be monitored. Highway patrol is not out there at all. That's their job. They should have picked up on it and done something right away but nobody did anything about it," said Lafferty.

He said he recently came across another driver whose tire was blown out by a large rock on the highway.

Lafferty, who has long had to dodge large rocks en route to his camp on the Stagg River, said he reached out to Monfwi MLA Jackson Lafferty and the GNWT following the incident.

During a commute to the capital May 13, Lafferty was pleased to see the rocks had been cleaned up – but he wants the years-old issue to be addressed regularly.

If not, an accident, far worse than a costly inconvenience, will happen, said Lafferty.

News/North has reached out to the Department of Infrastructure and was awaiting a reply, Thursday.

Dene Nation slams GNWT for acting unilaterally on pandemic booze access Says it wasn't consulted on rule change allowing liquor delivery by bars and restaurants

Seeking a new co-governance structure for the Northwest Territories, the Dene Nation alleges that the GNWT acted unilaterally by allowing take-out liquor delivery.

In an effort to keep restaurants and bars operating and staff employed, the GNWT announced on May 8 that all Class A and Class B licensed establishments can sell beer, wine and spirits for take-out delivery and without the need for an off-premises extension to their licence.

Dene National Chief Norman Yakeleya said at a news conference on Thursday that the GNWT has failed to live up to its commitments to co-governance, specifically stating that last fall's introductory breakfasts with the new cabinet appeared to be "lip service."

"When we had our first breakfast meeting with the MLAs on Oct. 8, we wanted to work together with the MLAs," Yakeleya said. "We then had a second breakfast meeting with some of the cabinet ministers and the MLAs and there was still a spark of hope of working together and collaborating on some issues.

Slowly, the cabinet decided to do things differently and now our breakfast food has turned cold."

He said this was again the message he heard last Friday night when Dene chiefs from across the territory met to discuss territorial alcohol restrictions and the amount of liquor being consumed during the Covid-19 pandemic.

"It doesn't make any sense to the chiefs, where you have delivery now to many, many homes, especially in Yellowknife, and there was no discussions with our chiefs at all," he said.

Yakeleya said there is still time to address the Dene Nation's concerns and that the Premier should create a "leaders table" as well as a "senior intergovernmental officials working group," which would allow the GNWT and the Dene Nation to work collaboratively on issues of common interest.

"The Dene Nation continues to call on the Government of the Northwest Territories to honour their commitments to work with Indigenous leaders on issues of common interest," Yakeleya stated. "No one government can successfully go it alone in the NWT."

In a news release issued Wednesday, the Dene Nation stated that it has been calling on the GNWT to further lower restrictions of liquor sales to one 26-oz bottle of spirits per person and one case of beer per day per person. The organization also stated that liquor sales should not be deemed an essential service in a similar fashion to food. Last month, the Dene Nation offered a message of gratitude to Premier Caroline Cochrane after the territorial government responded to its pleas for alcohol restrictions across the NWT and in their communities.

Effective April 16, the GNWT restricted individuals to a daily maximum purchase of $200 of alcohol products per person daily. Customers were also limited to no more than six 375ml containers of spirits per day.

Those restrictions had followed weeks of appeals by Yakeleya, who stated that excessive alcohol consumption was fueling parties and public gatherings and increasing the risk of the coronavirus in Dene communities.

Post-pandemic economic reset plan This week's criticisms of the GNWT follow efforts by the Dene Nation to reset the governing structure of the NWT post-Covid-19.

Yakeleya discussed a document that was sent to the GNWT in April called the Dene Nation Post Pandemic Economic Reset Plan.

In the six-page letter, the Dene Nation proposes new ways of tackling governance and economic development in the North. The premise is that the NWT's existing governance structure is outdated.

"The status quo is no longer good enough.

It is time for creativity and innovation as we transition to a better, post-pandemic economy," the document reads. "No one government can go it alone. It is a time for collaboration, cooperation and co-governance."

Specifically, the Dene Nation asks for a "Northern leaders table" that would have Indigenous leaders and cabinet ministers making decisions of common interest together.

Also proposed is an intergovernmental officials table "to support and carry out the direction from the leaders table" and an intergovernmental memorandum of understanding to formalize the arrangement.

The document also proposes a number of specific policy ideas including energy, land claims, contaminated site remediation, the

Mackenzie Valley fibre link, housing, education, tourism and strategies around seeking funding.

Yakeleya said this week that the Dene Nation has yet to receive feedback on these ideas.

Senator, MP support MLA's call for mandatory RCMP body cameras 'An important step in repairing the relationship between police and citizens,' says Dennis Patterson

A Nunavut MLA who has repeatedly called for RCMP to wear body cameras in the territory has allies in Sen. Dennis Patterson and MP Mumilaaq Qaqqaq.

Patterson said he's concerned that there has been some "erosion in the trust between the RCMP and Nunavummiut that is making it difficult for them to continue to fulfill their duty to serve and protect."

Adopting body cameras would protect the public and peace officers themselves, he said.

"I support starting off with a pilot project in Nunavut, as recommended by (Tununiq) MLA David Qamaniq," Patterson stated.

He added that the "accountability, transparency and peace of mind" that would be afforded by the cameras should not be dismissed due to technical difficulties such as data storage and cold weather. Patterson pointed out that various technology firms

can provide solutions and they have supplied cameras to police forces in Calgary and Ontario's York region, among others.

Nunavut member of Parliament Mumilaaq Qaqqaq said body cameras can be a tool to help improve services.

"Historically, the relationship between Inuit and the RCMP has been a rough one.

We have heard stories of forced relocation, dog slaughters and sending Nunavummiut south for tuberculosis treatment," Qaqqaq stated.

"We also know that the justice system often times doesn't work for Indigenous peoples.

"We have seen, across the country, the need for cultural and sensitivity training. With RCMP wearing body cameras we could have more insight on the challenges and room for improvement within the justice system."

There have been a couple of recent fatal confrontations involving police – one in Clyde River, on May 5 and one in Cape Dorset on Feb. 26. In both instances,

Ottawa Police Service has sent officers to investigate the incidents, but no details have been released to the public.

"This has been going on for too long," Qamaniq said on May 12, adding that he intends to keep pushing for body cameras.

In a March interview with Nunavut News, RCMP V Division commanding officer Chief Supt. Amanda Jones said one of the primary hurdles to using body cameras is storing all of the video footage and the expenses related to that.

"I will never say never, but right now it's the capacity to hold all that information (that's a barrier)," Jones said at the time.

Arviat North-Whale Cove MLA John Main, who offered his condolences to the communities and everyone involved in the fatal incidents, said he also supports Qamaniq's pursuit of a body camera pilot project.

"If there is a clear reason why this cannot be done in Nunavut, I would like to see a clear explanation," Main

Veteran Kivalliq performers Sam Tutanuak and Rosalie Pissuk of Rankin Inlet performed on an edition of Alianait's Social ... but Distant online concert series this past Friday, May 8.

Tutanuak said Alianait's online concert series is a cool idea. He said he was first approached by Alianait about his performance a little more than three weeks ago.

"I was actually happy and quite surprised when they asked me to do it," said Tutanuak.

"The way I understood it was to prepare a 20-to-25-minute video of me performing my songs and get it off to them and, technology being what it is today, I decided to give it a shot.

"I recorded the session on April 22 at my place in Iqaluit just using my phone and, after viewing it, I thought it actually turned out quite well.

"I was happy with it and, I would assume, the Alianait group must have been too because they didn't ask me to re-record anything, so now we'll find out what the people thought of it."

Tutanuak, 53, said he's happy to see Alianait doing the online concert series to help keep Nunavut artists viable during the Covid-19 situation.

He said being seen in one performance can often lead to other opportunities in the music industry.

"I'm still not totally clear on how the artists

get paid for having people view it, but this is another good thing about the technology available today.

"One area people sometimes forget about is that it also helps physically-challenged people who, maybe, can't get out to see a concert when they want to.

"With this, they can click onto a website, pay the 20 bucks or whatever and sit and watch their favourite artists. I mean the downside might be you're not with thousands of others at the concert, but at least you're getting to see one of your favourite artists perform."

Tutanuak reached number one on the Aboriginal Music Countdown in 2010 with the Three Musicians, a song from his original album.

He said he has just recently begun writing material for his second album, which he hopes to record sometime in the near future.

"Being alone in an Iqaluit apartment had me start working on songs again and I've actually just finished the first one, with another 10 to 15 to go to have enough material for an album.

"When I was at the Alianait Music Festival this past summer I got the attention of Culture and Heritage and they're keen on sending me to do another album.

"I also caught the ear of the Inuit Arts Society and they're willing to do some funding on an album, as well, so now it's a matter of me sitting down, picking up the guitar and doing some music writing.

"Hopefully, that will go well and it will all come together fairly quickly."

July arrival for fire training building New facility will revolutionize firefighting training in Nunavut

Construction of the fire training building bound for Rankin Inlet has been completed.

The building, which Rankin Fire Chief Mark Wyatt said will revolutionize firefighter training in Nunavut, should be loaded onto flatbeds this week and transported to Montreal.

It should arrive in Rankin on the season's first barge and be assembled and ready to go by the end of July.

Wyatt said a preferred site didn't pan out and a new location now has to be selected for the building.

He said he hopes to find a site, have the surveying done, get it properly zoned and have the pilings put in before the building arrives.

"We are in the midst of investigating a number of alternative sites and, hopefully, we'll have a new location nailed down in the very near future," said Wyatt.

"My ideal location now is in the industrial area of Itivia. The problem with that is it's in the flight path, so we have to look at that, although we're not going to be emitting huge exhaust plumes or anything like that but there will be some smoke going up in the air.

"Even though we've trained up at the dump for 25-odd years and burnt massive structures and everything, every time we do any sort of fire training we let Nav Canada

know in advance so that they can let their pilots know to expect it.

"I don't anticipate it being a huge stumbling block, but it could very well be."

Wyatt said the three-storey building has three different burn rooms, with an apartment on the second floor and a confined-space room on the third floor.

He said they will be able to do sprinkler training, high-angle-rescue training, search and rescue and many other forms of training within the new facility.

"We'll have a room that you enter into that has a forcible-entry door on it so we can practice all of that, as well as movable walls on the inside so we can change the dynamics of a room that people are searching – pretty much everything you need to properly train a firefighter in Nunavut.

"This type of training really hasn't existed here before, even through the Office of the Fire Marshal, so this is going to be a real game changer.

"I had to send my best-trained firefighters for interior firefighting down to Comox, B.C., to be trained because we didn't have the facilities up here to properly do it.

"Now we'll have the facilities to be able to train firefighters not just in Rankin, but from all over Nunavut, including the Agnico Eagle Fire Department, so it's going to benefit a whole lot of people and it's going to be great for the community."

Wyatt said the training facility has been a goal of his since he first arrived in Rankin Inlet and looked at what firefighters were being forced to train in at the local dump.

He said he's been working on this for about four years, almost as long as he's been in Rankin and he's proud it's finally coming to fruition.

He said he has a budget of about $600,000 to complete the project, which includes putting in some props.

"The building itself was about $260,000 and it's going to cost us about $100,00 to ship it here, as well as the fencing, prop additions, etc.

"I built one of these down south,

so I'm using the same supplier to construct this one and ship it up here. For what we're getting, we're doing really well in terms of budget.

"It will be a substantial revenue generator for the community when the hotels, restaurants, etc. open up, which, I hope, will be sooner rather than later."

Food insecurity drives Arctic Bay's breakfast program amid Covid-19 Hundreds of students are receiving meals at community hall

A community breakfast program in Arctic Bay is feeding hundreds of students despite complications from Covid-19. Food insecurity has motivated community members to continue with the breakfast program since March 31.

The program is currently being organized by the District Education Authority (DEA) while volunteering teachers from Inuujaq School are providing manpower.

"We are cognizant of the fact that there is food insecurity in the Arctic Bay," said Everett Igobwa, principal at Inuujaq School, adding "we are going well beyond the call of duty to provide at least one meal for them."

A hungry student cannot learn, said Igobwa.

Before the closure of all schools in Nunavut on March 17, Inuujaq School had a breakfast program in place for students. Breakfast would typically be served around 8:30 a.m.

Students looked forward to having breakfast at school, said Igobwa.

Igobwa explained it was not uncommon for at least 10 to 12 students to visit the office and ask for food even after lunch. "That's how I can actually justify that there is food insecurity," he said.

Inuujaq School, the community's only school, has nearly 300 students, according to the principal.

To adhere to social distancing protocols, a table has been set up outside Arctic Bay's community hall. Students can pick up food bags between Monday to Friday.

Inuujaq School closing, teamwork has allowed the breakfast program to continue, explained Igobwa.

He gives credit to the community's hamlet, the DEA and the teachers for the success of the program.

The hamlet, which usually funds the breakfast school program, is continuing to provide the funding amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Oyukuluk, is in charge of the program. She uses social media to promote and update the community about the breakfast program.

Her favourite part of running the program is "seeing all the beautiful smiles on the children when they pick up their breakfast bags," said Oyukuluk.

Then there are the teachers, who voluntarily prepare and distribute

food packages to students. "I'm just very grateful to especially the teachers," said Igobwa, adding teachers usually volunteer from 9 a.m to 1 p.m. on a given day.

He explained the teachers have to be very creative with the meals since students are no longer sitting down to eat.

Some foods like hotdogs, fruits, granola bars, boiled eggs and grilled

cheese sandwiches have been served so far.

From Monday to Friday, there is a table set up with the food bags outside of the community hall. Students, parents or guardians can pick up a bag usually between 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

"We always like being part of part of the solution and not part of the problem," said Igobwa, referring to Arctic Bay's food insecurity

About $4 million spent on isolation hubs for Nunavummiut in south With 1,022 residents going through isolation, minister calls this a well-placed investment

As of May 6, about $4 million has been spent by the Government of Nunavut to self-isolate 1,022 Nunavummiut in the south.

Finance and Health Minister George Hicks said he is not surprised by the figure.

"We had made some very rough estimates and this has fallen in line with what I had anticipated anyway," he said during the GN's press conference on May 8.

The finance minister emphasized that the $3,982,673 has been "a wellplaced investment."

This money spent has allowed the territory to remain Covid-19 free, according to Hickes.

The amount of money the GN is willing to put towards self-isolation in the future is unknown, he said.

"We don't have a figure in mind, nor do we have a timeline in mind, which I think is the biggest parameter," the minister said.

When asked how the GN could have reduced costs of self-isolation, Hickes replied, "Plan it out better."

He said the GN had set up the isolation hubs in Ottawa, Winnipeg,

Edmonton and Yellowknife in about 36 hours.

"In a normal process, we would have gone to competitive bids or at least invitational bids, which might have alleviated some of the costs," he explained.

Isolating hotel guests decry conditions 'It's almost like it's making us higher risk to be here,' says one Nunavummiuq

Two people who went through self-isolation at one of the GNapproved hotels in the south say the facility is poorly maintained.

One Nunavummiuq, who requested anonymity, said cleanliness was lacking and food in unsealed Styrofoam containers was routinely placed on a carpeted floor in the hallway and sometimes left there for hours. She also insists that masks and disposable gloves should be issued to guests of these facilities.

She said she saw instances where social distancing was not practised, people were coughing openly and plenty of occasions when other guests were spitting outside the hotel, particularly in designated smoking areas, where she said up to 10 people gather at a time. As someone who suffers from asthma and allergies, putting her at higher risk if she were to be infected with the virus, the experience left her constantly worried about catching Covid-19 from others lodged in the Ottawa facility.

After checking in, she said she found her room to be repulsive due to food stains, visible fingerprints on the walls and curtains, blood in the toilet, her tub was black and there was pubic hair in the refrigerator door.

"I'm not exaggerating," she said.

"They're rushing to get people in here. It's not hygiene at all. It's almost like it's making us higher risk to be here."

Even though she was successful in getting hotel cleaning staff to come back into her room to do additional work, she still spent 4.5 hours more cleaning it herself, she said.

"It was so filthy," she said. "I said to the nurse, 'This is not safe. This is supposed to be safe' ... I was told (by a hotel manager) if I don't like it to leave."

Another hotel guest, who also wanted his name withheld, said the building didn't have a single bottle of hand sanitizer available for guests or staff.

"There's plenty of companies in Canada mass producing hand sanitizer. There is no excuse not to have any if you're government," he said.

He noted that hotel staff and security guards were not wearing masks; some staff wore the same gloves inside and outside while sometimes touching guests' doors and doorknobs; and they didn't always maintain proper distance from one another.

"Security and hotel staff are clearly not trained for this," he said.

The hotel isn't exclusively for those in isolation. There are other guests from outside Nunavut coming and going, according to the complainant and they get into the same elevators with those in isolation.

"Preventative safety measures are only going to deteriorate from here because negligence will increase with time as you are not supervising this properly," he warned. "Going to Dollarama is safer than entering this building. You have been very lucky so far to keep Covid-19 out of this building."

"Something has to be done. I wish the MLA could come here himself and see how we're treated," she said, adding that there are no interpreters or Inuktitut translations available on site. "I feel sorry for the other people that don't even really understand English ... I feel like I'm in jail ... the way we're treated here, it's very, very sad."

Guests are allowed outside for 30 to 45 minutes per day and are permitted to walk around the block for a little exercise, she noted.

Improvements made, says GN The Government of Nunavut sent a statement to Nunavut News indicating that it has been "working toward continuous quality improvement at the isolation hubs."

GN staff members travelled to isolation hubs in Ottawa, Winnipeg and Yellowknife on April 26 to improve service, according to the Department of Health.

"This work will be ongoing as needed," the statement read. "Our goal is to provide the most safe and pleasant guest experience possible while they maintain strict isolation."

As of May 8, there were seven formal complaints filed with the Office of Patient Relations, six of which have been resolved, including food quality and quantity, according to the GN. In regards to masks and gloves, they are not "typically recommended or routinely necessary in a residential setting such as a home or a hotel where healthy people without symptoms are physically distanced from those outside of their immediate circle," the territorial government stated. "Non-medical masks can be considered for the general public in settings where physical distancing is not possible, such as a grocery store or pharmacy."

Arviat North-Whale Cove MLA John Main said he has heard complaints from a constituent about the food served at the Winnipeg Hilton.

However, he credited the Government of Nunavut for adopting the strict southern isolation measures to protect Nunavummiut, even though it's a trying process for those who are locked down for 14 days. He also noted that the hotels chosen as isolation hubs are of good quality overall.

"The question is how can we make this thing better, just like any other health-care service," Main said.

Iqaluit-Niaqunnguu MLA Pat Angnakak and Tununiq MLA David Qamaniq said they have not been contacted by any constituents about issues in hotels designated for isolation.

"I think it's been very hard on families who have no choice but to be in the south," Angnakak stated.

The Government of Nunavut recently disclosed that, as of May 6, close to $4 million had been spent on room and board for 1,022 Nunavummiut in the isolation hubs located in Ottawa, Winnipeg, Edmonton and Yellowknife.

'It's been a great community effort'

Every community brings its own approach to coping with the Covid-19 pandemic, Norman Wells included.

It's all about the food. In addition to Mackenzie Mountain School's healthy food hamper program, the Norman Wells town council has built a food pantry in front of the town hall where residents can access food for free.

"I started the pantry program because I know that in this season the pandemic has been hard for families in need. We gave it the theme 'give what you can and take what you need,'" said Christine Legare, Youth and Elder Centre co-ordinator.

The pantry, set up on May 1, is installed outside the hall building and at night the food items that can't handle the cold are taken inside.

It initially consisted of one big metal box but the project proved to be so popular that the town built and added a "more pantry-like" wooden cupboard with doors, said Alex Millette, Recreation Director.

It cost the town little to put together because the equipment was already available through the Public Works

department.

Residents of the Sahtu town have dropped off nonperishable items like pasta, canned goods, powder mixes, cereals and other foods.

"We just put it out to the community, saying if you have goods to donate please come in and put them in the box.

It's there for people to access," said Millette.

"There is no contact. We do the social distancing measures and we have Lysol wipes as well. But the community has been giving and also taking. It's been a great community effort," he said.

"People have been giving enough that people have been taking a lot of items.

With the support of the community people know what they need. We haven't had any hoarding. It has balanced itself out well."

Whether it's going out onto the land or coordinating local activities through the radio, the pandemic has pushed communities to work together and reassess their needs, and Norman Wells is no exception.

"During this Covid pandemic we've seen the community come together to do programs like this. It has made the community much stronger," said Millette. "The pantry thing tops that off."

Cambridge Bay's Omingmak Frolics spring festival was scheduled to take place May 11 to 18 of this year, but has been cancelled. It is always a special time for people to celebrate the arrival of the spring season. A variety of games and activities are usually scheduled for 10 days out on the bay area in front of the community.

Tents and food booths are always a favourite when taking in the events, serving soups, stews, chillis, bannock and everyone's all time favourite "Omingmak Burgers." No one ever goes hungry spending the day outdoors at the frolics.

Dancing and music also play a big part in the celebration. People wear their fanci-

est kamiks to jig and square dance. Corporate challenges were always fun to watch, participating in various events during lunch hour during the week.

Don't forget Ollie the Omingmak, the Folics' mascot, who brings much joy to the children.

The main events of the frolics were of course the snowmobile races and the fan favourite is always the Elder's 120cc race around the oval track.

The men and women always put on a good show as they raced drags, ovals, river run, team relays and cross country. The power of the snowmobiles have evolved since and the adrenaline is felt by both racers and spectators.

Covid-19 or not, the snow is melting, the geese are loose and Paulatuk is ready.

Residents have been in and out of town readying their camps for the spring as the bounty of ptarmigan harvest are distributed to elders and families in need.

"We had with 70 and so far about a dozen households received anywhere from three to six ptarmigan," said Mayor Raymond Ruben in between trips to his own camp. He estimated approximately 70 to 80 per cent of the hamlet was out on the land.

When Dr. Kami Kandola laid down restrictions to prevent the spread of Covid-19, one of her recommendations to best self-isolate was to head out on the land.

Most people were planning to do that anyway.

"A lot of people go camping eventually when the geese have all arrived and they just got here," said Ray Lennie.

"It's nice to see videos and the pictures starting to show up of the camping or hunting. That's what makes a wave of people get out on the land.

"Just doing our seasonal hunt and forgetting about the crazy year we're having so far."

Ruben added that poor weather at the start of May had delayed a lot of families from getting out to their land. But now there was at least five set up, which would harvest geese and fish as the spring set in.

He added caribou were present in the area, but were not being hunted because many are carrying young or are not in the best shape at this time of year.

The 2018 death of Hay River's Brittany Martel in British Columbia has been ruled accidental by a coroner's report.

The 2018 death of a Hay River woman in British Columbia has been ruled accidental in a coroner's report.

Brittany Martel, 27, was discovered deceased on the side of a highway, about 60 km south of Merritt, B.C. "I find that Ms. Brittany Marie Ruby Martel died in Merritt on July 20, 2018, of cardiac ischemia due to or as a consequence of methamphetamine and cocaine toxicity," wrote coroner Susan Stapleton in her April 21 report. "I classify this death as accidental and make no recommendations."

Cardiac ischemia refers to the reduction of blood flow to the heart, preventing the heart muscle from receiving enough oxygen.

An autopsy found no evidence of traumatic injury.

According Stapleton's report, a motorist had exited his vehicle to stretch during a closure of Highway 5 and discovered a deceased female down a small embankment.

The female – later identified as Martel – was fully clothed, but barefoot.

The coroner's report noted that she was travelling from out of province with a friend to the lower mainland of B.C. "Her friend reported that during the early morning hours of July 17, 2018, they stopped at Britton Creek rest stop to sleep," the report stated. "The friend fell asleep for approximately four hours. When she

awoke, Ms. Martel was nowhere to be seen.

The friend then continued on her journey to the lower mainland. Ms. Martel was not reported missing."

The friend travelling with Martel was not identified in the coroner's report.

Martel was seen by numerous witnesses driving on Highway 5 between July 17 and July 20, 2018, in the areas around the Britton Creek rest stop and where she was found on July 22, 2018.

"There were no reported sightings of Ms. Martel after July 20, 2018," Stapleton noted. "A review of Ms. Martel's cellphone indicated her last outgoing call was made the morning of July 17, 2018."

According to the coroner's report, an investigation of the scene where Martel was found did not reveal any illicit substances or drug paraphernalia.

Her shoes were found about 35 metres from where she was located. Her purse and cellphone were found at the Britton Creek rest stop.

The RCMP investigated the death and ruled out foul play.

In her report, Stapleton noted that collateral information indicated that Martel had a history of problems with illicit substance use.

"Her friend that she was travelling with indicated that on the drive through B.C., Ms. Martel appeared to be experiencing hallucinations, which she believed to be from withdrawal of substances," the coroner wrote. "Family indicated she had contemplated entering treatment in the past."

Premier Joe Savikataaq and his team showed Nunavummiut a slice of contrition with his apology to teachers regarding his tactless comments earlier this month.

Keeping a sense of balance Northern News Services

How quickly life and lifestyle changes as a result of an incident or circumstance. With an amazing array of modern medical approaches, we can go through the situation with hope and confidence. Unfortunately, this is not the case all the time but the majority of us will weather the storm.

I'd like to include a thought that sometimes gets me in hot water, but I don't use my words idly.

Several issues back I referred to the fact that we need to have a sense of balance. As much as humanly possible we need to be in control.

Having this personal control does not come easy nor are we able to maintain control because of outside influences. In this present time, it is the Covid-19 virus that has snuffed out any sense of control, but we will overcome soon.

My thought for you to ponder on is this sense of balance. This covers our mental, emotional,

physical and spiritual domains.

In most of our workplaces there is provided a number to call if we begin to feel overwhelmed with pressures of all sorts.

We can talk to a mental health specialist if our mind is swirling and playing tricks on us. We can walk or exercise to keep ourselves active and in reasonable physical condition.

To round out this circle to have this sense of balance is our spiritual connection. I could use some choice words in this particular domain, but the secular world of humanism will always make me feel like I am putting people on the spot. I will use the most common phrase by saying, "we can connect with our higher power" because we all admit that there is something out there bigger than me and always seems to come through when we have no other recourse in finding answers or help. This completes the circle of balance and we always leave out the spiritual because we all think we can handle everything

No Covid-related fines from RCMP Even after several reports of wrongdoing no penalties to date

There have been complaints about Nunavummiut violating Covid-19 emergency orders from the chief public health officer but, as of May 12, the RCMP had not yet ticketed any residents.

In Iqaluit, there have been a few reports of individuals offering services such as haircutting or massages that would not be in line with social distancing measures, according to Rod Mugford, acting chief enforcement officer with the city's Municipal Enforcement Department.

There have also been complaints about improper gatherings, as Nunavut is currently limited to five people congregating at a time.

All of those alleged incidents have been passed along to the RCMP or environmental health officers for investigation, said Mugford.

The territorial Department of Health stated that a total of 19 complaints from across Nunavut have been filed with environmental health officers but no fines had been levied as of May 11.

RCMP Cpl. Jamie Savikataaq said the RCMP have received very few, if any, direct complaints from residents about Covid-19 emergency orders being defied. Officers occasionally encounter gatherings of more than five people but they have responded by dispersing the groups and verbally reinforcing the existing limitations on people assembling, he said.

There have, however, been a couple of combative individuals who have spat at the RCMP while claiming to have been diagnosed with Covid-19, according to Savikataaq.

"On occasion our officers do get spat at. It's unfortunate, but it does happen," he said, adding that such instances don't result in Covid-19 penalties but instead a charge of

In late March, the territorial government announced fines of up to $50,000 or up to six months in jail for those who fail to self-isolate for 14 days.

empowered municipal enforcement officers, sheriffs from the Nunavut Court of Justice, environmental health inspectors and wildlife officers to enforce emergency orders from the chief public health officer, although the department refers the public to the RCMP

as the first point of contact.

In Kugluktuk, bylaw officers broke up several illegal card games in mid-April.

Mugford said Iqaluit municipal enforcement officers are taking an approach of educating Iqalummiut in regards to Covid-19 emergency orders.

"The educational thing is a big part. If you don't get compliance with the education then I guess you have limited options and that's when fines are issued," he said, adding that his department has good lines of communication with Nunavut's other enforcement agencies.

Inuvialuit magazine Nipaturuq prepares to launch second edition

When Mataya Gillis was handed a blank slate during the Inuvialuit Living History project in Ivvavik National Park last August, she wasn't sure exactly where to put the resources, but being teamed up with Cassidy LennieIpana the idea to launch Nipaturuq magazine developed organically.

"We went into the camp knowing that we had to do a project and we were able to brain storm with Jason Lau (a university student working with the Inuvialuit Living History project) before we left to see what we could do," said Gillis.

"Cassidy was really interested in interviewing people and I was very indecisive of what I wanted to do because they gave us the freedom and resources to do anything, then I thought that I can include everything that I'm interested in and create a magazine.

"So me and Cass worked together and she did interviews and I started with the photography and design.

"It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be mostly because Jason really helped us and it was easier to find the people to interview because they were all at the camp with us."

Seven months and a trip to Montreal later, the first edition of Nipaturuq, which is Uum-

marmiutun for "to have a loud voice," was published.

Focusing on what it means to be Inuvialuit, the publication launched Feb. 25 and was distributed internationally through Tusaayaksat magazine.

Aiming for four editions in a year, Gillis said the next edition was sent to the printers and should be available next month.

This time around, the duo will explore climate change and how it is affecting the North and expand the scope of their interviews.

"For this issue we were able to get more communities involved which was great," she said.

"We have people from Ulukhaktok, Sachs Harbour, Tuktoyaktuk and Inuvik.

"I get to talk to so many people and learn so much and it's a lot of fun designing the magazine and getting to know the software. I'm loving it."

As for the next issue, Gillis said there has been some brainstorming as to what the theme will be, though her interests are diverse enough that the sky's the limit.

"There so much that we can talk about and so much that we can learn," she said. "I love to talk to people so that's a reward itself.

"Thanks to everyone who volunteers their time to contribute to Nipaturuq."

Kitikmeot artists struggle during Covid Husband and wife team have trouble accessing funding and selling their art

Roy Klengenberg of Kugluktuk and his wife Amak are finding it frustrating to try and sell their sculptures during the Covid pandemic, especially when he's between orders.

"It can get difficult to sell which can be very discouraging," he said.

"I have to sell in town and I set a price at what I think it is worth, considering the time you put in, time and effort you put in to retrieving the soapstone and other costs that come with carving. It is upsetting when people try to bargain and want to buy for a cheaper price when this is my livelihood and only means of making money."

While he is continuing with his passion, he's waiting for relief funding that he's applied for through the government.

A great grandson of Danish explorer and trader Christian Klengenberg, Roy began carving as a young boy.

Traditional soapstone carving has been a part of Inuit culture for many generations interpreting the Inuit way of life. The first carvings were primarily made for children's toys in which the Europeans found fascinating as it depicted artifacts of the Inuit but to the Inuit they were just simple toys to keep their children amused.

Carvings and little figurines were made with soapstone, drift wood, bone and antler.

"I was taught by both my parents, Annie and Isaac Klengenberg," Klengenberg said.

"My first carving I did was a seal at the age of nine and at the age of 12 I was carving full time. I attended school up to grade three then my family moved to an Outpost camp at Klengenberg Bay and have been carving now for over forty years."

Materials can be hard to come by, in the past the Coppermine Co-op provided soapstone for the Carvers.

"I have no means of transportation, therefore I have to rent a machine to go and collect soapstone 71 miles Northeast of Kugluktuk at Palik," said Kelengenberg.

"When I don't have the materials to make a big piece, I use what I have to make small pieces. My wife Amak has joined me in sewing miniature clothing for my carvings."

Amak Klengenberg had never participated in the carving or sewing arts until she learned from her husband.

"I have never done anything like this before, Roy has taught me how to sew, he cuts out the outfits and I do the sewing," she said.

"He has taught me so much and I think we make a great team. The clothes are so tiny that my fingers get stiff and cramp up but I get them done."

Now the pair will continue to work as much as they can as they weather the Covid pandemic.

Gwich'in's Got Talent finishes week four

Arviat The annual Ugly Fish Derby will be held from Thursday May 21 until Sunday, May 24 in Arviat. Registration to this year's derby will be free courtesy of the hamlet of Arviat.

Top prize for the ugliest sculpin will be $5,000, while secondto-ninth-place finishers will each receive $2,500.

Measuring will take place on the sea ice on May 24 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Nothing under 14 inches or 35 cm will be measured in the contest.

Inuvik Things are beginning to open up around the NWT but the Gwich'in Tribal Council isn't letting that stop its ongoing talent show.

Week four of Gwich'in's Got Talent wrapped up on May 17 with the theme being 'show and tell.' The challenges for people to tackle included coming up with their best hand-made creation and their favourite place in the Gwich'in Settlement Region.

As with past weeks, there were four categories for people to enter – child, youth, adult and elder – with entries posted at the council's Facebook page. There was money up for grabs again and it increased as each category winner received $250 if their post got the most reactions.

The winners weren't known as of press time.

Knit snake craft kit offered in Fort Smith Thebacha/Fort Smith Northern Life Museum & Cultural Centre in Fort Smith is offering free family craft kits.

As garter snakes near Fort Smith come out of their winter hibernation, community residents have been invited to make their own knit snake.

People could pick up a kit at the museum late last week and early this week.

For those who could not make it to the museum, Mary Kaeser Library can deliver a kit on May 14.

The kits are available on a first come, first served basis.

Stuff for free Facebook site launched in Smith Thebacha/Fort Smith A new Facebook-based group – called Fortsmithfreestore – was launched on May 5.

The group is a place for anyone in Fort Smith looking to give away, find or trade any items.

There will be no selling of items.

The initiative is all about reusing and recycling items that

would have normally end up in the landfill, such as wood, fabric, household items and clean clothing.

Organizers advised that anyone using Fortsmithfreestore should follow appropriate safety measures and social distancing during the Covid-19 crisis.

Activity kits sent home Thebacha/Fort Smith The snakes around Fort Smith are about to come out of hibernation and the Northern Life and Cultural Centre in Fort Smith is looking to celebrate that.

The museum offered up family kits to make knit snakes on a first-come, first-served basis.

People were able to go to the museum and pick them up in person earlier this month and if they couldn't make it in, the Mary Kaeser Library would deliver on May 14 so long as they were reserved ahead of time.

The library also had origami kits available for youth seven years of age and up. It came with instructions on how to do origami and enough paper to make every model included.

The library delivered those as well on May 14 to people who called ahead.

Open Doors opens to Active Kids Liidlii Kue/Fort Simpson The Open Doors Society is slowly reopening its programming and one of those programs is already up and running.

Active Kids got underway on May 14 and it's open to all youth from kindergarten to Grade 6.

Any child that attends must be signed up daily by their parents and parents must contact Open Doors by e-mail in order to sign their child up. No walk-ins are being permitted under any circumstances.

The daily activity will be posted each day at 9 a.m.

Soccer coaches wanted NWT The North American Indigenous Games have been re-scheduled for next year but the look for soccer coaches is happening right now.

Specifically, NWT Soccer is looking for a coach for the boys U16 squad for the team that will travel to Halifax in July 2021.

Anyone who wants to apply must be a member of NWT Soccer with past playing and coaching experience.

You must have the Soccer For Life certification along with the Aboriginal Coaching Module, among other qualifications.

The deadline to get your name in is May 31 at 5 p.m. and you can find the full list of requirements at the NWT Soccer website.

SLFN provides Covid-19 assistance to members Thebacha/Fort Smith As a response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the chief and council of Smith's Landing First Nation (SLFN) have approved a second payment to assist members with basic needs.

The financial assistance for members on and off reserve is to help purchase food and disinfectant/cleaning supplies.

The assistance consists of $200 for a single-person household; $300 for a household of two; $400 for a household of three; and $500 for a household of four or more people.

SLFN has reserve land in northern Alberta. Many of its members live in Fort Smith.

NWT Chamber of Commerce asked for help May 1

The Government of the Northwest Territories will not provide a temporary moratorium on commercial evictions despite a plea from the NWT Chamber of Commerce.

On May 1, the chamber sent a letter undersigned by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and several provincial chapters. In it, they asked for a temporary halt to commercial evictions as federal funding support – the Canada Emergency Rent Relief Assistance – is rolled out for small and medium-sized businesses that have lost revenue due to the Covid19 pandemic.

The chamber has maintained that local landlords have no certainty that they are going to qualify for that program.

Renee Comeau, executive director of the chamber, broke the news of the premier's response in an email to members of the organization on Wednesday. She said Premier Caroline Cochrane told her that legislation to put a short-term hold on all evictions for small tenants is not going to happen because it would require legislative changes to the Commercial Tenancies Act. Asked where those changes to the act would be needed, Comeau said she didn't know.

She stated that the premier also told her that "GNWT has faith that landlords will not be evicting tenants right now."

"We are hopeful that businesses will not get evicted due to inability to pay," Comeau wrote.

"The reality is that a majority of landlords in the NWT are multinational REITs who have anchor tenants – the GNWT – in their buildings. Thus having a few spaces sit empty has zero effect on their bottom line, as proven with the vacancy that continues to sit in the Centre Square Mall. We are also well aware of the programs available to businesses. However, as indicated multiple times in our letters, small businesses are not in a position to incur further debt load."

The NWT Chamber of Commerce, the Press Secretary and Premier's office didn't make copies of the Premier's letter public as of Wednesday evening, nor was the Premier avail-

able for comment.

Comeau said in an interview on Wednesday that the response has left the chamber feeling "dismissed" and that the full affects of the Premier's rejection might not be seen until after the Victoria Day long weekend.

'Dismissed' "We want to keep the lines of communication open (with the Premier's office) because this is such a major issue for the business community throughout the Northwest Territories," Comeau said. "But it's disappointing. We're hoping that they're going to reconsider."

Comeau couldn't say how many businesses might be impacted by the GNWT's decision, but she noted that local landlords will also be affected.

"This is really going to negatively affect our local landlords, those who really want to not evict people and who can't afford to evict people," she said. "But they may be put into a

position where they're going to have to (evict) because they have their own operating costs that they have to cover. As small landlords who are not these multinational REITs, they're not going to be able to hold back."

As of May 13, Comeau said there were no commercial evictions in the NWT, but typically the fallout commences a little later in the month.

She explained that commercial landlords often tend to enter a lease agreement with a tenant that states that rent has to be paid by the fourth business day.

"If the rent is not paid on the fourth business day, the landlord will remind the tenant that they have until the 10th business day," she said.

During that time, the landlord has the ability to change the locks or apply for eviction under the Commercial Tenancy Act. "They then have to petition the NWT Supreme Court that they're evicting the tenant, which just happens on the 10th business day

because they already advised the tenant," she said. "So I think we're going to see the reality of this situation rear its head, either come Friday or Monday."

Comeau applauded the federal government's announcement on May 13 that $962 million will be directed to small and medium-sized businesses throughout the country through a new CanNor fund called the Regional Relief and Recovery Fund. Of that money, $34.3 million will go to the Northern territories.

"To my understanding that CanNor grant is not taxable so this is just a straight-across-theboard operating costs grant, which is what is really needed," she said."We're really thrilled to hear about the additional funds."

The chamber still wants the program to be expanded to support sectors that "have fallen through the cracks," Comeau added. These would include businesses that employ more than 20 people, home-based businesses and not-for-profits.

Our family has taken to playing Monopoly every Saturday night since having to stay at home. The game is based on such ruthless money mongering premises that I end up feeling guilty when I win because of the sad look on my families when I take all their money and leave them bankrupt.

My son doesn't play Monopoly with us anymore and it sounds terrible, but we don't like playing Monopoly with him anyway because he is not good at losing. He never has been. When he was five years old and he lost to his dad he threw the pieces and tipped over the coffee table and kicked it. Now he plays video games online and yells at the screen out of nowhere. At least he is not yelling at his family so it's somewhat of an improvement.

I've since taken to playing cards online while being isolated at home as well. I admit I've been dabbling

I'm not sure if it was the bingo caller they were mad at or their neighbor beside them who won but whatever the case I was not wanting to yell "bingo" that night.

Now that large crowds are prohibited, bingo is out of the question so a lot of people are resorting to playing cards in their homes. There is nothing wrong with that but I hope that whatever

games are played in peoples' spare time, people are putting family and responsibility first. There are too many parents neglecting their children to play bingo or cards well into the night and it is very sad that gaming is sometimes put first before loved ones. Cards and bingo can be just as addicting as any other vice.

Even scratchies and lottery tickets can be consuming our hardearned money. We like to scratch that itch for the slight possibility of winning big, and don't get me wrong, it does happen but just how much needs to be spent to win? At what cost?

And to what extent will we be content? Just ask the mystery person that recently won the $55 million somewhere in the NWT and still hasn't claimed it. Will that person ever purchase another lottery ticket again? Or will they still buy a ticket just to play the game?

Unable to execute on full expansion of the Hope Bay gold project, TMAC Resources has agreed to be acquired by Chinese operator Shandong Gold Mining for $149 million, TMAC announced on May 8.

The Kitikmeot Inuit Association (KIA), a minority shareholder in TMAC Resources and owner of the land on which Hope Bay sits, is reviewing the sale offer. KIA President Stanley Anablak stated that his organization supports the Hope Bay gold project but will endorse Shandong's takeover only after ensuring "that our members realize maximum benefits from any sale."

The deal is also subject to 66.6 per cent approval from shareholders voting at a special meeting tentatively scheduled for June.

Tom Hoefer, executive director NWT and Nunavut Chamber of Mines, referred to the pending transaction as "very good news for everyone."

He noted that Shandong Gold Mining – also known as SD Gold – has made several key commitments, such as completing the feasibility study to expand the mine at Hope Bay; to inject the substantial capital required; to maintain contracting benefits, including contracts involving Inuit companies; to maintain the flow of royalties fees and taxes to Inuit and territorial governments, which help fund public services to Nunavummiut; and shareholders will realize a meaningful premium.

Hoefer said Hope Bay, with its high grades of gold and large precious metal reserves, represents great "untapped potential to generate long-term benefits for Nunavut and Canada" However, in the near term, Hoefer expressed concern for Hope Bay's viability in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a news release issued May 10, TMAC president and CEO Jason Neal explained that

the mining rate has been slowed significantly with only about 120 workers remaining on site. Close to 60 Nunavummiut staff were sent home in late March, with pay, to reduce risk of spreading the coronavirus.

"We now expect that we will be able to run the processing plant through the end of July and are analyzing opportunities to extend further. If the risk of Covid-19 continues, TMAC may execute a controlled transition into temporary care and maintenance," Neal advised.

Nevertheless, he struck a tone of optimism about the years ahead under the ownership of SD Mining due to that company's "financial strength, technical capability and long-term

vision to maximize the value of the Hope Bay property."

"The successful outcome we have achieved (with SD Mining) is essential to ensure that TMAC has sufficient liquidity to fund its operations, fund debt payments, resume full operations as soon as is practical and complete the feasibility study for future optimization and expansion of operations," said Neal.

Yumin Chen, chairman of Shandong Gold Group Co. Ltd., said his company plans to uphold the standards set by TMAC Resources.

"We have been impressed by TMAC's strong relationships with its local stakeholders and responsible management of environmental and safety aspects of mining and intend on

demonstrating the same commitment as the owner and future developer of Hope Bay's assets," Chen stated in a May 8 news release.

"We look forward to working closely with all stakeholders and local communities in Nunavut to deliver a world-class operation that will benefit the regional economy for generations to come."

Toronto-based TMAC Resources acquired Hope Bay from Newmont Mining in 2013, making the junior mining company the first of several operators on the property over several decades to finally make mining a reality at the site.

The company struggled with efficiencies and gold recovery, however.

Ed's note: It's been more than 40 years since Howard Brazeau skipped his rink of Dick Cisarowski, Jim Schaeffer and Mickey MacEachern to victory at the Canadian Firefighters Curling Association Championships.

It was so nice, they did it twice – and backto-back for good measure – in 1976 and 1977.

Here's a look back at how they did it.

Had Howard Brazeau skipped this team in 1974, they would be on top of the NWT sporting totem pole in terms of history.

Alas, Brazeau and his rink of Dick Cisarowski, Jim Schaeffer and Mickey MacEachern still made sure they found their place into the record books as the first curling

rink from the NWT to win a national title of some sort.

And just to put a cap on it, they did it backto-back.

The foursome out of the Fort Smith Curling Club were the best of the bunch at the Canadian Firefighters Curling Association Championship, known back then as the Dominion Firefighters Curling Championship, in 1976 and 1977. Their win in 1976 came in Charlottetown with the repeat win coming in Ottawa.

NNSL Media had coverage of the team's second win in 1977 ("Brazeau king of the firefighters, wins 10 in a row to grab title", News of the North, April 6, 1977) and according to all accounts, it was a cakewalk.

Brazeau waltzed past the opposition, beating many of them by lopsided scores.

The rink began to shine on the second day of the event (March 30). It manhandled the Doug Riley rink from Edmonton, 11-3 – Riley's first loss at that point – before taking down B.C.'s John Campbell rink, 8-3 and shaded the Gordon Cole rink from Manitoba, 5-3.

That left Brazeau with a perfect record of 5-0 after beating some of the finest rinks in the championship.

The rink maintained that winning pace until it finally clinched the title on Friday (April 1). When he defeated Northern Ontario, 5-4, Brazeau's record went to 9-0 and no one could catch him. His nearest rival at that point was the Fred Brown P.E.I. rink at 6-3 while four other rinks – Alberta, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia and B.C. – were next at 5-4.

Brazeau's 10th win over Nova Scotia, a 7-1 romp, was merely icing on the cake.

Brazeau had the bye on the final day of play Saturday and was able to watch the other teams battle it out from the sidelines.

The win in 1977 was a bit easier than it was in 1976 as Brazeau had to win in a playoff over Alberta and Saskatchewan after all three tied for top spot after the round-robin (there was no playoff system at that time; the winner was the top team following the roundrobin). Brazeau had to beat Saskatchewan first and then Alberta to take the title.

Brazeau and company are up against the 1994 NWT junior boys rink of Kevin Koe, Jamie Koe, Kevin Whitehead and Mark Whitehead in the next round of the Greatest Of All Time competition. Voting gets underway this morning at 9 a.m.

Spirits are high as folks are ready to begin heading out for the annual fishing derbies in Rankin Inlet.

Hamlet council approved the two derbies this past month, but also gave notice the events would be revisited if a confirmed case of Covid19 were to occur in Rankin

in the meantime.

Both derbies are only accepting local registrations as per Government of Nunavut policies.

The registration fee of $50 per household will apply to both derbies; the trout derby from May 15 to 18 and the cod derby from May 22 to 24.

Susan Hickes, a member of the four-person fishing derby committee, reminds Rankin residents that fish from any non-registered resident will not be measured and people cannot have their fish measured under someone else's name.

Hickes said the derby committee asks the community not to gather in groups and it encourages social distancing.

She said measuring will take place outside the Singiituq Complex, with recreation workers setting up a one-way lane for vehicles to line up.

"Once we are done measuring your fish, we will ask you to leave," said Hickes.

"There will be no gathering around the area where we are measuring and we encourage social distancing.

"Prize announcements will be done via Facebook Live on the Rankin Inlet

"From the reactions I've received, everyone's happy about the announcement.

"We've been on lockdown, or whatever, for eight weeks and people are just tired of not working and always being home.

"The fishing derby is one of our community's biggest events of the year and everybody's really excited about the news we have the goahead this year."

Hickes said at this point, she just hopes Mother Nature decides to cooperate as well.

She said she also hopes everyone will take care to travel out to their favourite fishing spots and back home safely.

"Our last step is to get all our registrations done and then we are good to go.

"I haven't had anyone voice any concerns to me about loosening up the restrictions. Everybody's really looking forward to it.

"We still don't have a case of it and, hopefully, it stays that way until this pandemic is over.

"We want everyone to have a great time, but, at the same time, we also want them to travel safe and keep up their social distancing so we can all stay safe."

Why would any sports columnist want less sports at a time like this? Hint: It's not me Northern News Services

So it appears someone didn't like the fact that I had not-so-nice things to say about Tecmo Bowl in last week's column about classic Nintendo sports games.

You see, this person said I threw a hissy fit because I couldn't beat Chicago or Denver. No, see, I chose to be Denver all the time. I'm a Broncos fan and always have been. John Elway is the greatest quarterback of all time. The only point I was making was that all of the other teams were garbage. Denver will never be garbage, though, even if Tony Dorsett isn't in the backfield anymore.

Anyway ...

Well, what else should they do?

There's no junior hockey of any sort until at least August when training camps are scheduled to open up for the Canadian Hockey League, meaning the teams have plenty of idle time on their hands.

The Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey League had themselves a bit of fun earlier this month when it decided to take the league's 20 teams and incorporate their logos into Disney characters. I have to admit – this was one of the more creative and fun ways for a team to waste time while waiting for the Covid-19 And this guy writes about sports to disappear.
