Rankin college campus graduates 87 students Pre-apprentice carpenter Tyra Suluk learns to make ulus and a sawhorse, erects cabin walls

The largest grad class among Nunavut Arctic College's campuses came from the Kivalliq this year as 87 students were recently recognized for their achievements.

Arviat's Tyra Suluk was one of the pre-apprenticeship carpentry students. She was motivated to learn the trade to help out someone dear to her.

"My dad had bought a house few years ago that needed everything renovated so I took the course so that I can renovate it myself instead of paying thousands of dollars for housing to renovate it," Suluk explained.

Her mother is a self-taught carpenter, so Suluk also wanted to acquire the skills to become more like her.

She began the classes in September and finished in April. She's now seeking a journeyperson carpenter so she can accumulate hours on the job to move on to her second year. Her objective is to complete four years of training and earn her red seal in carpentry.

The past several months saw her build a sawhorse with the use of only hand tools, she put up cabin walls alongside her classmates, and she

crafted ulus.

Upon successfully wrapping up her introductory year, she said a few women from her hometown approached her to ask how to apply for the program.

"I was shocked when more women were interested taking the trades," she said.

At the campus this year, the most popular program was the heavy equipment operator air brake course, which 12

students passed.

Eleven participants made the grade in the apprenticeship housing maintainer program. Management studies certificates went to 10 learners while three others

achieved their management studies diplomas. Nine students were training to become apprentice oil heat systems technicians. Eight completed the office administration certificate program while

another eight were involved in introduction to mine training.

Numerous other apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship level programs were offered over the past year at the Kivalliq campus.

"This letter is intended to encourage corrective action by clearly defining the expectations being placed on the executive."

Main adds the letter is not targeting any one particular minister.

All MLAs agreed not to hold a mid-term leadership review after the October 2017 election when they met together in Pond Inlet in early 2018. Rather, they opted to hold each other to task on a regular basis.

This decision would open the door for the ousting of Paul Quassa as premier, Main reminds Savikataaq.

Main also reminds Savikataaq that the regular members' caucus is responsible for "effectively holding the government accountable to the people of Nunavut."

"I must advise you that there is a growing dissatisfaction on the part of my caucus colleagues with the approach taken by a number of ministers. Rather than responding in a clear, candid and comprehensive manner to members' questions posed during sittings of the house and meetings of standing committees, a number of ministers do the opposite," Main states.

He adds that behaviour is unacceptable.

Mikkungwak takes on Speaker duties after Enook's passing

Baker Lake MLA Simeon Mikkungwak, after being voted in from a field of four, assumed his duties as the Nunavut legislative assembly's new Speaker May 28, stepping into the chair after the passing of Joe Enook in late March.

Iqaluit After a moment of silence for the late Joe Enook, legislators required only a single ballot to promote Baker Lake MLA Simeon Mikkungwak from deputy speaker to Speaker the morning of May 28.

Enook died in late March.

Former premier Paul Quassa, former cabinet minister Pat Angnakak and Gjoa Haven MLA Tony Akoak were in the running.

Mikkungwak himself said he expected the voting to go a second round.

"I'm very humbled," said Mikkungwak

after the vote. "I'll try my best as the Speaker of the legislative assembly and the territory.

"Having worked with the late Speaker, Mr. Enook ... he's passed on the knowledge."

Mikkungwak and Enook often travelled together to fulfil their duties, and while the assembly was in session they would speak together about maintaining order and decorum.

Mikkungwak sees his new job as reminding members that they are representing their constituents and the people of Nunavut. He also hopes to foster open communication with members, who are elected by the people, he said.

"It was an honour being his deputy speaker," he said about Enook.

Mikkungwak also said Enook's passing was very hard to take.

The new Speaker chaired the committee of the whole, experience which will serve him well in his new duties.

"Having (that) knowledge, and trying to treat each and every member equally, I guess that was taken into consideration," said Mikkungwak.

After the vote, the new Speaker was headed off for a briefing on his new duties, which he was set to take on at the opening of the spring session that afternoon.

GN, NTI release education consultation reports Nunavut As Nunavummiut wonder about the substance of a revised Education Act, the Department of Education released its consultation report on May 30.

The department held consultations in all 25 Nunavut communities, engaging with 124 district education authority members and 705 Nunavummiut at town hall meetings, according to its report.

the Inuit Language Protection Act to reflect changes to the Education Act – is scheduled for June 4 at the legislative assembly.

In its own consultation report, Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI), which attended the GN-led consultations, notes the department's legislative proposal was leaked in May 2018.

"NTI was disappointed to learn the changes being proposed were largely based on changes initially proposed in Bill 37," the NTI document states.

Bill 37, a similar attempt to revise the acts, died during the previous government's last session due to overwhelming lack of support from Nunavummiut.

But that's in the past. Come Tuesday, the proposed revisions will be public.

"I greatly appreciate the feedback we received during our consultations," stated Minister of Education David Joanasie in a news release.

"Comments from Nunavummiut helped shape the proposed amendments to the Education Act and the Inuit Language Protection Act. This feedback creates a shared vision for education and the protection and promotion of Inuktut."

The Coalition of Nunavut District Education Authorities, which also had staff attending consultations, has its own report.

At stake are bilingual Inuit and English or French language of instruction, powers of District Education Authorities, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit in schools, social promotion, inclusive education and student supports, among other items.

Nunavut News will publish an analysis of these report to its website Monday, June 3, in advance of the first reading of Bill 25.

No medals, but knowledge gained at Skills Canada Northern News Services

Halifax, NS No gold, silver or bronze will be flying back with 16 Nunavut competitors who competed at Skills Canada nationals in Halifax this week.

But the knowledge they have gained through the program can serve them well for the remainder of their lives. Just ask Abigail Atienza, who's about to graduate from Inuksuk High School in Iqaluit.

Atienza competed in the job search category this week, and she's been progressively building on her proficiency in that field since Grade 10.

"I thought if I'm going to get a job I'll need to have the skills to be a good interview or write a cover letter or a resume," said Atienza.

Her diligence on that front recently helped her land a summer position with Travel Nunavut.

"Everything I'd learned from job search really helped," she said. "I was so ready."

Atienza still picked up additional know-how this week at the national championships. She learned about preparing a portfolio, which highlights a job candidate's transcripts from school, scholarships, diplomas and other accomplishments.

She was so determined to create

her own portfolio to impress the judges, she stayed up until 2 a.m.

Wednesday using the hotel lobby printer to produce 18 pages showcasing her abilities and achievements.

"I was making that portfolio (thinking) I have to stay up, I have to do this for (Team) Nunavut," said a smiling Atienza.

After her summer work with Travel Nunavut, she'll be heading off to university, although she hasn't yet decided which one. She has been accepted into the bachelor of science and psychology program at Carleton University, the University of Ottawa and a Queen's University campus in the United Kingdom.

No matter her choice, she's confident she will again and again call upon her research into performing optimally while striving to get hired.

"The employability skills are very important," said Atienza. "It's in my back pocket and I can pull it out whenever I need to.

"I'm so glad Janis (Devereaux, executive director of Skills Canada Nunavut) recruited me. It's an experience I will have for the rest of my life. I went to nationals for the first time in Winnipeg and then I came back here in Nova Scotia and I love it."

Eli Qaqqasiq's sweet hobby takes him to Halifax Northern News Services

Halifax, NS Layer cake. Chocolate-filled cookies. Miniature pastries. Chocolate sponge cake.

Those were among the offerings that Eli Qaqqasiq baked at the Skills Canada national championships in Halifax on Wednesday.

After he placed his finished products on plates and presented them on the table for the judges, they walked up and down the aisle, stopping to sample the baked goods and assessing various qualities.

"It makes me kind of nervous because we don't get to taste it," Qaqqasiq explained.

Not everything went according to plan.

Over the seven hours allotted for baking, Qaqqasiq tossed out his first batch of cookies because they burned. The wrong type of flour was to blame, he said.

The lost time prevented him from baking bread and lime curds.

He still got high-fives and praise from members of the Nunavut Skills Canada delegation for not giving up during his first experience at nationals.

Teacher Jean-Francois Latour, who's a baker, spurred Qaqqasiq's love of baking and encouraged him to get involved with Skills Canada a couple of years ago.

It won't be the way Qaqqasiq makes a living, however. Becoming a flight attendant is how he envisions himself spending many of his adult years.

"I just want to have fun for now while I'm young," he said, adding that he'll be entering his final year at Inuujaq High School in the fall.

Teghan Angulalik is certain hairstyling will be her profession Northern News Services

Halifax, NS Teghan Angulalik can see herself enrolled in the hairstyling program at Marvel College in Edmonton.

The Cambridge Bay student, who's on the verge of graduating, displayed the hairstyling skills she has already acquired at Skills Canada nationals in Halifax on Tuesday and Wednesday. It's her second time attending the national event, having competed in Edmonton last year.

"I'm happy to be here and challenge myself and see how I do compared to others," she said.

Her enchantment with hairstyling blossomed in 2016 when she got her own long locks chopped short by a professional in Edmonton.

She cuts men's hair in her community but she needs more experience to feel comfortable providing that service to women, she said.

At nationals, the competitors were asked to include wishes, which are additional decorative touches, such as a low bun or an ornament, Angulalik said.

That was an unusual twist compared to territorials, she noted.

Her last task on Wednesday was to replicate a haircut from a picture without using clippers.

It's the time of year when the sun barely sets, the sea ice is slowly receding, and people across Nunavut are out on the land as much as possible.

Otherwise known as fishing derby season, the few weeks before and after the May long weekend are some of the most cherished among Nunavummiut.

You only need to look at the pronounced tan lines that develop around people's eyes to see just how much time people are actually spending on the land.

The fact there is big money on the line certainly keeps things exciting.

Especially since getting out on the land isn't cheap these days. You need a machine, qamutiik, gas, fishing gear, tents and sleeping bags. That's without mentioning groceries, clothes and all the other little things you need to pull off a successful trip.

But the derbies are also a reminder that there are some things that money can't buy: quality family time on the land.

Acts of Charity, or Love In my View

Charity, or Love, is the practice of voluntarily giving help to those in need as a humanitarian act; to me that is a very powerful statement.

Let's look at some of the humanitarian acts we can engage in.

Our people have been placed in a precarious position by leaving a way of life that was productive and involved. It was a way that always had people looking out for each other through thick and thin. In order for the family or group to make it on the trail, things were not done to make them sick or weary and tired or to have the attitude of let them look after me.

The furs and food harvested as they traversed was shared and bartered when another group was met on their movements. Whenever travelling parties met, they shared information about what was harvested or seen along the path. They explained the terrain, water bodies and the different wildlife species along the way. This was shared openly and as accurately as they could explain so that these travellers had an idea of what to expect as they travelled along.

Now that our people have basically left this nomadic life-style and were lured into organized communities, the traditions have not changed. The will to survive is still strong; the desire for an affordable dwelling is always on their minds; having food on the table and proper clothing for each of the seasons is worked at daily.

In their frustrations they turn to substance to ease the pain and soon they become addicted to these substances, whether alcohol and

drugs or gambling. They become unable to provide properly for their families and learn to rely on institutions and organizations to feed their habits while their children and loved ones begin to live in a state of limbo with no certainty or stability ahead of them.

Where is the Charity, or Love, in this form of living? The attitude changes from supporting and providing for family to self-fulfilment or self-satisfying tactics for personal satisfaction.

Our organized communities are expanding and now it's everyone for him/herself regardless of the costs. Our elders are few and those who are still with us are being abused and shut out. The organized community members go to them last when it comes to advice and guidance. The respect and love for them is overshadowed by neglect and abuse and we are still oblivious or blind to this.

Charity, or Love, does not wish harm on anybody, does not think highly of oneself, is quick to give and help, and always wants the best for others. If we are in the state of living in a modern lifestyle with all the amenities with it, let us not ignore who we are and where we came from, 'the land'. We shared, we cared, we gave and we helped during tough times.

This is the true attitude of Charity, or Love,.

When you are out on the land, the best in you shows itself.

Fishing derby reels in more than 30 participants

Iglulik More than 30 people took part in a Iglulik fishing derby May 17 to May 20, and the winners were rewarded with cash prizes.

Nicolas Akittirq took home a $1,000 cheque for the heaviest fish caught around Iglulik Island. Emma Quassa won $500 for second place.

In the category Iqalulikuluk lake fish, Lucas Panimera turned in the heaviest fish and claimed the $1,000 cheque.

Susan Qamaniq earned $500 as the runner-up.

Cod and char were among the most common fish caught.

"The fishing derby was great," said recreation coordinator Qumangaapik Arnatsiaq. "The weather was perfect."

Travelling Kenojuak exhibition gets boost from federal funds

Toronto The Department of Canadian Heritage is contributing $464,000 to assist in a national tour of the Kenojuak Ashevak: Life and Legacy exhibition, it was announced Wednesday.

"As president of the Kinngait Arts Foundation and someone who knew Kenojuak very well, I am honoured to announce this important partnership with Canadian Heritage," says Jimmy Manning. "A prominent artist member of the West Baffin Eskimo Cooperative and an ambassador for Cape Dorset's cultural community, this exhibition celebrates the life and legacy of one of Canada's most beloved national treasures."

Kenojuak, who hailed from Cape Dorset, became recognized as "one of Canada's preeminent artists and cultural icons" as her career spanned more than five decades, according to a Kinngait Arts Foundation news release.

Kenojuak Ashevak: Life and Legacy will visit six regional centres across Canada beginning in early 2020. This show includes 31 drawings – some never publicly displayed before – from the archives of the West Baffin Eskimo Cooperative as well as three prints.

The Cape Dorset and Toronto-based not-for-profit Kinngait Arts Foundation was established in 2001 to promote Inuit art from Cape Dorset.

Mike-Murphy accepted her award in Inuktitut, before speaking in English.

"I want to thank the fans of Anaana's Tent, the parents and the children, my family and my friends who are always supportive in whatever I'm doing," she said.

"I encourage everyone to watch Anaana's Tent. It's not only educating for the children. There's a lot of content about our Inuit culture."

Each year the Emerging Talent Award is given to a promising professional whose achievements have made them a rising star in children's programming. This award was created to encourage young creators and broadcast professionals to outdo themselves and pursue a career in youth production, according to a Taqqut Productions news release.

Anaana's Tent is a bilingual educational preschool series on APTN, which teaches Inuktitut.

Mike-Murphy is from Pangnirtung, and also performs as musician Riit. She has shared the stage with top Nunavut artists, including The Jerry Cans, as well as Twin Flames, Elisapee Isaac, and performed at the 2018 Juno Awards.

Guides, search-and-rescue team polish ice rescue skills

Mittimatalik/Pond Inlet Guides and search-and-rescue team members had the opportunity to take Surface Ice Field Safety instruction in Pond Inlet May 8 to 10.

Trainer Steve Ruskay, who organized the certification course in the community, in partnership with Travel Nunavut, Economic Development and Transportation and outfitters, said 16 people took part.

Joanasie Tigullaraq, who took the course, said learning knots was important as they are used for rescue ropes and pulley systems.

He also said it was the first time he found himself in water in the winter. He was in the water during training sessions because, as Ruskay explains, learning how to keep yourself safe is one of those most important aspects of ice rescue. Participants had to learn how to pull themselves out of the water and onto the ice.

Ruskay says the course is nationally recognized. "(The certification) is accepted in all jurisdictions in Canada as the standard for anyone who's working on an ice cover, whether it's on a lake, a river, an ocean. It meets and exceeds all the best practices and standards," he said.

Outfitters Black Feather, Arctic Kingdom, Baffin Safari and Arctic Kingdom had their guides, who are hired for floe edge season, take the course.

"This course was important because for the employment perspective it provides proof of competency and certification, which is really good for the overall operational safety," said Ruskay.

Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit was naturally included in ice discussions.

Iqaluit infants and toddlers welcome Pirurvik early education Northern News Services

After receiving $1 million in Arctic Inspiration Prize money, Pond Inlet's Pirurvik Preschool staff quickly set off to their first of seven stops to spread the training and materials blending Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit (IQ) and the Montessori method.

"The Tumikuluit Saipaaqivik Inuktitut daycare staff and the Pirurvik Preschool staff had an exciting three-week training together," said co-founder Tessa Lochhead, adding one week of training took place at the Pirurvik Preschool in Pond Inlet and the two remaining weeks at Tumikuluit.

"It was the first time we worked on developing infant and toddler programming in one cohesive environment with the preschooler environment, and it was a success."

Lochhead said it was an honour to work with the dedicated and hardworking staff at Tumikuluit, and to receive the support of parents and board members.

The next stop is the Naurainnuk daycare in Pond Inlet – a separate entity from Pirurvik Preschool – in the fall of 2019.

Daycares in Arctic Bay, Iglulik, Rankin Inlet, Cambridge Bay, and Taloyoak will also receive the training and materials.

Grocery prices motivate brothers to open store It is my goal to make food costs affordable for the whole duration of the year: Kigutaq

Martin Kigutaq wants to make a difference for his family and his community.

To that end, over the past year, he's transformed old shipping containers into the Baffin General Store or, as the community affectionately calls the new enterprise, The Containers.

Kigutaq had several reasons to team up with his brother Daniel Benic to start the business.

"The most important being food prices are a heavy burden on many families, including my own. I have a strong background in warehousing and logistics and I believe the current prices of many food items available for sale in the High Arctic are not reflective of the true costs of doing business here," said Kigutaq.

"The second being, I needed an opportunity to be able to provide for my growing family using my own work and hard labor. I am a person who likes to set my own hours and see the work I have completed at the end of the day. I love being my own boss."

Finally, Clyde River is the only community with only one grocery store, a Northern.

"Clyde Rivermiut needed a choice and I hope I am able to offer them

that," said Kigutaq.

Benic is the logistical point man in Ottawa, where the brothers lease a warehouse space to stage inventory for air cargo and sealift shipping.

Baffin General Store had an unexpected early launch on May 20.

"A community member posted they needed baby wipes, and it just so happened that I had a lot of them and wanted to help. By the time word got out I had a line-up of 20 to 30 customers out the door, for over four hours. I would say the opening day was a success," Kigutaq said.

The new entrepreneur says he'll be stocking the shelves with everything people need on a day-to-day basis.

"I am in the process of shipping up a lot of everyday grocery items.

Spices and baking goods usually not available in the store, and hygiene products," he said, adding he plans on taking advantage of sealift season, though he's currently shipping by air.

The Baffin General Store is currently entirely financed by the brothers.

"I have approached many organizations for support, but the amount of requirements is just staggering.

While I understand from their point of view that their hesitation is warranted, it has been extremely frustrating requesting assistance. I am

currently in talks with a few organizations. But, realistically speaking, nothing happens fast enough in the financial world, especially in regards to a newly-started company with a short track record," said Kigutaq, who, over the past year, has worked up to 11 hours a day and, this past month, more than 14 hours a day.

He says the process of moving forward with a store is theoretically straight-forward.

"But, in reality it has been a long journey. Operating in the North has its own challenges. Not only on the paperwork side of the business, but the environment. Many items readily available elsewhere are just not here – items such as building materials and actual inventory to sell."

He's learning to plan ahead, far ahead, he said.

"Anticipate exactly what is required."

While Kigutaq admits he struggled a bit with the paperwork involved, he says Clyde River's economic development officer has been a great help.

"Billy Palluq has been my guidance in all aspects of my incorporation. Applying for programs and funding has been nothing short of a headache. I even have given up on a few, due to the enormous amount of

Nevertheless, Kigutaq is in the process of adding an additional two containers on either side of the existing two.

And his vision is strong. He wants Clyde River residents to have access to prices Canadians see every day.

"It is my goal to make food costs affordable for the whole duration of the year," Kigutaq said.

A second goal is that the company be active in the well-being of the community, which includes engaging with children through programs and

activities and to be a positive contributor to the community with community events.

"There are so many hardships that burden families and Inuit living in the North. I am hoping my company will at least be able to change one of those, for the better," said Kigutaq.

"Community support has been nothing short of amazing. Clyde River has been long overdue for a second store, and the support reflects that. Essentially, all of my products are sold at a cheaper cost than existing businesses here. The support has been overwhelming."

It's not often you can celebrate your birthday with a five-digit pay day but that's what Jake Pissuk of Rankin Inlet got to do earlier this month.

Pissuk celebrated his 19th birthday with a $10,000 cheque after he caught the biggest fish over the May long weekend during the hamlet's annual trout derby.

Pissuk's family was one of 237 households to register for this year's derby, the same amount as last year.

The weather couldn't have been any better with temperatures rising to the plus side and sun shining all weekend.

"People really enjoy it," said Susan Hickes, one of the founding committee members of the derby. "It brings friends and family together for the weekend. It's also an opportunity to pass on traditional knowledge on the land."

The only person to get a cheer louder than Pissuk at the crowded awards ceremony was 86-year-old Adele Kumaruaq Angidlik, who took home an $8,000 cheque for finishing second place with a 43-15/16-inch fish.

The elder was all smiles as she received a standing ovation on her way to the podium.

Pissuk caught the 45-1/4-inch fish the day after his birthday, near the end of a session that began at 6 a.m. and ended at 10 p.m. on Peter Lake.

Pissuk kicked off the weekend with his mother, little brother, older sister and his brother-in-law at Peter Lake on Friday night.

Although he didn't get a bite that night, he shot two caribou and a ptarmigan to mark his 19th birthday.

The following day, the Pissuks returned to Peter Lake to camp for the evening. After drilling his fourth hole, Pissuk got his first bite of the weekend at around 8 p.m. As soon as he felt the fish on the line, he could tell it was big.

As he started trying to pull it up, his jigger broke, which left him to pull up the line with his bare hands. He finally brought it up to the hole after a fight, but the fish was so big he had to get his brother-in-law to chisel a bigger gap while Pissuk held the line.

After about 20 minutes, he finally pulled the beast from the water.

"I was just happy to see his face come up," Pissuk said at the awards ceremony.

Pissuk said he was going to spend his birthday winnings on his family.

"Now I get to buy a new Honda for my mom."

Hockey camp returns

Iqaluit One of the biggest hockey camps in Nunavut is returning for another year.

It was announced on May 27 that the Nunavut Stars camp will be held at the Arnaitok Arena in Iqaluit from July 28 to Aug. 1.

Registration opened on the same day and is open to anyone in the territory between the ages of five and 18.

Iqaluit The indoor turf at the Arctic Winter Games Arena in Iqaluit is in business and that means indoor soccer has begun.

There is a co-ed indoor program happening every Monday and Wednesday from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the AWG for the duration of the turf season and May 29 was the first official evening of action.

Geela Evaloakjuk, who's helping organize the sessions, said in a social media post that 26 people registered and turned out for the first evening of action and if the numbers continue to increase, there is the possibility that a league could be formed.

Baker basketball showdown returns Kemp Angoyuaq Memorial honours memory of player who died in 2001

Baker Lake's Lightning defended their title against an experienced Rankin Inlet squad in the men's division at the Kemp Angoyuaq Memorial Basketball Tournament, held over the Victoria Day weekend.

"They were a competitive team that lost a tough game in the finals," said Gary Kennedy, an organizing committee member.

The tournament featured five teams in the men's division and four in the women's.

All teams were from Baker Lake, except for Rankin's men's team and a women's hybrid team made up of players from Coral Harbour and Whale Cove.

"We normally don't get three or four out-of-town teams ... but it seems we get one or two teams every year," said Kennedy.

The men's final started off really slow, with the Lightning ahead of Rankin 8-5 going into the first half.

Things loosened up in the second half as both teams found their feet and the net.

Rankin was able to get the lead for a little bit at one point but the Lightning came back and took control and managed to hang on by three points with a final score of 29-26.

"It was tough for Rankin because a lot of Bakermiut were cheering the hometown team," said Kennedy.

On the women's side, Baker Lake's Warriors narrowly beat the Hurricanes 27-25 in another tight contest.

The two teams have battled it out a lot over the years but this was the first time the Warriors were able to beat their rivals.

The Warriors are a much younger team trying to establish themselves, whereas the Hurricanes are mostly vet-

erans.

"For the Warriors to break through that was big," said Kennedy. "A few players from the Hurricanes even posted on Facebook saying congrats, you finally did it."

This year marked the 11th year the tournament has been held in honour of Kemp Angoyuaq, an avid basketball player from Baker Lake, who passed away while playing the game he loved in 2001.

The tournament has long been a popular feature in the community and tickets were sold out all weekend long.

Since the 2010 tournament, a tribute has also been paid to the late Philip Tagoona, another of the community's prominent basketball figures, who now has a most valuable player awarded in his name each year.

Angoyuaq's family still takes a very active interest in the tournament. They preside over the opening tip-off of

Inuk artist explores memory Megan Kyak-Monteith just returned from 2019 Venice Biennale with Inuit Futures project

Emerging Inuk artist Megan Kyak-Monteith will be making new memories this summer in her Halifax studio and putting them to canvas.

The recent Nova Scotia College of Art and Design grad and freelance illustrator has a new studio with access to a wood shop downstairs and plenty of canvas.

Megan typically paints on canvas, with Nunavut landscape scenes and Inuit portraits as a main subject.

For the last two years Kyak-Monteith has been exploring memory in her artwork. Her process starts with a personal memory and involves collecting found and shared photos, arranging them into a collage, and doing a series of sketches to re-create a surreal dream-like version of that memory, with exaggerated colours

and moody lighting.

"I've been working on painting about memory, my interpretation of my memories," she said. "I want to search out and see it on a canvas because there is no picture of it."

This is how she goes through her memories, Kyak-Monteith said. Now, she would like to try to "transcribe the memories of others" too.

Originally from Pond Inlet, she has been living in Halifax most of the year but usually returns to Iqaluit in the summer. This year will see a change to her routine. Kyak-Monteith is not sure she can return to live and paint in Iqaluit any time soon.

"I am not sure how my painting would be in Iqaluit," Kyak-Monteith said. "I'm not sure I know anyone else who paints at a large-scale in Iqaluit."

She was in Venice this month with other Inuit artists and students for the 2019 Venice

Biennale, as part of the Inuit Futures project.

Art historian and art history professor Heather Igloliorte invited her to join the trip.

They participated in workshops about curatorial practices and the history of Venice, while also preparing their own projects for the Inuit Art Quarterly.

While other participants' projects were "a bit more structured", such as Indigenous beading or interviews with artists, Kyak-Monteith is writing a reflection on the group of Inuit students in Venice and how they occupied that space.

To prepare for her first published article, Kyak-Monteith did a lot of sketching during the trip. She was keen to draw on "how Inuit existed in that space."

"I never really wrote anything article-wise or anything," she said. "The idea is not really concrete. I am letting the sketches inform the writing."

Prior to this trip, in March, Kyak-Monteith was part of a group of seven artists, six of whom were Inuit, who created a multimedia installation at Montreal's Nuit Blanche festival. For this project, called Memory Keepers/Gardiens des Mémoires, she created a hand-painted stop motion animation of hands preparing and serving narwhal mattaq.

As for other upcoming projects, she is hoping to do another memory painting series soon with her younger brother.

"I want to talk with him and translate his memories and see how that goes," she said.
