"It feels good to know there's hope."

Interest from private investors and donations from across Canada have already started pouring in, Laserich noted.

"Any help we welcome. If everybody just does a little bit, we can do away with this problem of food security," she said.

There will be a meeting with mayor and council and a community meeting within the next month to flesh out next steps, she noted.

Mayor Pamela Gross said it sounds like a good idea.

Demand at the food bank is constantly steady, she acknowledged.

"It's always something that is a need in the community with food security and the high cost of living," Gross said, expressing appreciation for high school student Kieran Evalik, who held a food drive in late May to bolster the food bank's supplies.

For Laserich, who is battling her own serious health issues, helping others is something she feels driven to do.

"I've learned life is precious," she said. "Let's make our moments matter."

As it gets warmer in Iqaluit, our little friends the snow buntings have emerged. This image took a lot of patience to capture as I spent almost two hours waiting and running back and forth for this female bunting to emerge. My patience finally paid off as I lay at the edge of the hill and she sat close to her nest gathering dried branches for her nest.

Order of Nunavut for Zacharias Kunuk Filmmaker recognized for bringing Inuit culture and language to international audiences

Filmmaker Zacharias Kunuk has received the territory's highest honour for his creative vision, which has taken Nunavut Inuit to an international audience.

Nunavut's Commissioner Nellie Taptaqut Kusugak, in her capacity of Chancellor of the Order of Nunavut, presided over Kunuk's investiture at the legislative assembly the evening of June 5.

After calling Kunuk a great ambassador for Nunavut, Kusugak listed a few of the many films Kunuk has made, which show the world Inuit traditional skills and culture, in Inuktitut.

Kunuk, co-founder of Igloolik Isuma Productions, was previously named an Officer of the Order of Canada and a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Long before the first ever Inuktitut-language featurelength film Atanarjuat, The Fast Runner hit the big screen in 2001 – and winning the prestigious Camera d'Or at 54th Cannes Film Festival – Isuma had already made at least 20 films.

The company had by then won numerous awards and institutions all over the world had Isuma productions in their collections: Museum of Modern Art, New York University, National Gallery of Canada, Museum of Northern Peoples in Hokkaido, Japan, to name just a few.

In 1999, as he was getting ready to film Atanarjuat, he spoke to Nunavut News.

That's the hard work,

attention to detail and creative vision that would see Atanarjuat chosen as the greatest Canadian film of all time by filmmakers and critics at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2015.

Kunuk is always working on films, such as 2016's feature-length drama Maliglutit (Searchers) and, most recently, he and the Isuma collective have been live-streaming, despite, as he said to those assembled at the legislative assembly, Nunavut's terrible connectivity.

As Kusugak noted, a livestream of seal-hunting outside Iglulik showed at the 2019 Venice Biennale's Canadian pavilion May. She also spoke of Kunuk's work with the Haida of British Columbia.

Sgaawaay K'uuna (Edge of the Knife) is filmed entirely in Haida dialects, said Kusugak, in an effort to revitalize Haida languages.

Kunuk was an executive producer and Isuma the distributor.

In his own speech at the legislative assembly, Kunuk remembered the early films, pre- Atanarjuat, from 1992, when his curiosity and attention to detail were developing.

"Because I didn't understand the ayaya songs very much … they all sounded the same," he said via translation, "I sat with elders for a full week. I learned how they create a song. They have

200 songs, all in their heads.

There's a story to every song."

The Iglulik company also launched the internet-based Isuma TV, which, if Nunavut technology could catch up, said Kunuk, has much greater potential. He'd also like to see more independent Nunavutmade television.

"Available to all Nunavut communities, available to watch 24 hours a day. It's one of our dreams," he said.

"We'll be filming walrus hunting possibly in August.

We have to make sure the people are informed. We have to find out what Inuit are afraid of and what they're joyful about and what their challenges are. That's why Isuma was created."

All this from a videographer/filmmaker whose hometown only got television in 1982 – the elders kept it out until the Inuit Broadcasting Corporation was formed – and who was a carver by trade.

"In Repulse Bay I saw a video camera and I decided to have one too. I brought some carvings down to Montreal, sold them and bought my first TV set, 26-inch, a porta pack and camera and a VCR," he told Nunavut News in 1999.

And he's never looked back. The list of films, series and projects is long and will only get longer.

"If our technology was up to date, we could do many more things," he said.

Nunavut Arctic College produced some more homegrown nurses, teachers and environmental technicians this spring but also made a tremendous impact in the lives of some adult basic education students.

Cape Dorset's Niviaqsi Qavavau was one of them. She returned to school for eight months to upgrade her education and gain employment skills.

It paid off for her quickly. She graduated in late April and has already accepted a job offer from the federal government, she said.

She's moving to Pond Inlet next month to assume the position.

"I was so excited," said Qavavau.

"I'm proud of myself."

Her days back in the classroom weren't easy but she persevered.

"We had to do a lot of studying and homework, working on the projects," she said. "It was a lot of work."

Qavavau said she's certain there's a connection between her academic upgrading and her being hired.

"I wouldn't have been eligible

for that job if I wasn't in adult basic education skills. It opened everything to me," she said.

Between 2011-2017, 1,560 students took part in adult basic education at Nunavut Arctic College and 99 per cent of them were Inuit, according to the college.

At this year's convocation ceremony in Iqaluit, 48 students were recognized for their achievement.

Six attained their degree through the Nunavut Teacher Education Program while three others earned their nursing degree.

Five students completed the prenursing program.

Another five received their diploma in the Environmental Technology Program.

There were six office administration certificate grads while four others picked up their diplomas in office administration.

In the interpreter/translator program, four collected their diplomas while two attained a post-diploma certificate.

Four students earned a diploma in Inuit studies.

The 14-week Getting Ready for Employment and Training (GREAT) Program delivered nine graduates.

More failing grades for GN on education Government not fulfilling its responsibilities with proposed Bill 25: NTI

The Department of Education, in drafting Bill 25, An Act to Amend the Education Act and the Inuit Language Protection Act, has failed in one critical area – involving Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI), the protector of the Nunavut Agreement and Inuit rights, in the process of finding solutions to offer bilingual education sooner rather than later.

Citing Article 32 of the Nunavut Agreement, the Inuit organization says it should have been a full participant in the design of Nunavut's education program, but it only saw the contents of the bill for the first time when it was tabled June 4.

"Nunavut Inuit have been clear in their expectations for the Education Act. Despite years of constructive contributions by NTI and other Nunavummiut, the Government of Nunavut appears to be offering very much the same repackaged amendments. This is not consistent with the responsibility entrusted to ministers of the legislative assembly by Nunavummiut," stated president Aluki Kotierk June 5.

Aside from district education authorities, hiring principals and choosing school calendars, at the heart of the matter is the right of Inuit children to be educated in their mother tongue – Inuktitut or Inuinnaqtun.

"The government must be held accountable for the failure of Bill 25 to address NTI's most important proposals on behalf of Nunavut Inuit in a meaningful way. On this slow a schedule, a child born today – who will be 20 years old in 2039 – will still not be able to receive Grades 9-12 instruction in Inuktut," Kotierk stated.

With Bill 25, the department presented a phased schedule of curricu-

lum, recruiting teachers and resource development when it tabled Bill 25 on June 4 – delaying the date of bilingual education to Grade 12 from July 1, 2019 to July 1, 2039 for Inuktitut and 2037 for Inuinnaqtun.

In an interview with Minister of Education David Joanasie, Nunavut News asked him what his department accomplished with Bill 25.

"The main thing is that we wanted to give it back to Nunavummiut and hear what they have to say, with the intent that it reflects what Nunavummiut have to say," he replied.

Using the protection of caribou herds on the decline as a metaphor, Joanasie explained the new 20-year deadlines were necessary to build capacity.

But NTI's position is clear: the GN's approach is unacceptable. It calls on GN cabinet and members to show leadership, transparency and commitment to working with NTI on its suggested three-pronged solution to Nunavut's education and language crisis.

A history of failure The current language and education crisis is all the more galling because, while the Department of Education is embarking on consultant-led work for a 10-year strategy for education in the territory and a strategy for teacher retention and recruitment, that work has previously been done. A Bilingual Education Strategy for Nunavut: 2004-2008 exists, as does Qalattuq, 10 Year Educator Training Strategy 20062016.

When Nunavut News reported on the previous government's labours with the failed Bill 37 in 2017, no one in government could recall these documents.

"If we are to achieve the goal of Article 23, a goal to which Canada has committed itself, can it be left to the Government of Nunavut? I think not. Nunavut does not, under Territorial Formula Financing, have the resources."

Meanwhile, an Inuit child who enters kindergarten in 2026, gradu-

ating in 2039, may – or may not, if history repeats – be a part of the very first cohort to graduate as an Inuitlanguage speaking young adult, with a sturdy education to see them succeed on an equal footing with their Canadian peers.

That's 40 years after the formation of Nunavut and several decades too late for thousands of Inuit rightholders.

It's not a surprise Kotierk has repeatedly expressed frustration to Nunavut News.

"What was envisioned in Section

8 was that Inuit parents would be able to have Inuktut-speaking teachers provide education in Inuktut and that Inuit children could go to school in Inuit languages and be self-determined as Inuit in Nunavut," Kotierk said in February.

"It just seems to be so backwards.

I cannot fathom how I can articulate it in a clear way so that the Government of Nunavut would understand how frustrating this is for all Inuit parents."

Bill 25 is scheduled for debate in the legislative assembly in October.

High school students and adult learners are the Government of Nunavut's (GN) greatest human resource, but what's being done to develop that resource?

Not enough, according to the latest report on Nunavut from the Auditor General of Canada.

"Overall, we found a number of gaps and barriers in Nunavut's education system that made it difficult for high school students and adult learners to succeed academically and transition to post-secondary education and employment," said audit principal Jim McKenzie.

McKenzie and several staff from the auditor general's office were in Iqaluit June 4 to deliver the report, Support for High School Students and Adult Learners, which was tabled in the legislative assembly that day.

The audit team made 12 recommendations to the GN

Department of Education, as well as Family Services, which administers student financial assistance programs and Nunavut Arctic College, including developing and implementing strategies related to helping students graduate, improving attendance data, retaining staff in schools and the department and encouraging students to enrol in post-secondary programs that lead to working at the department.

The Department of Education agreed to these, noting work had begun to develop a 10-year strategic plan, which will include helping high school students be successful. Similarly, the department will be working on a 10-year teacher retention and recruitment strategy this fiscal year.

Some of the roadblocks encountered by high school students include their schools not having guidance counsellors to offer career advice and schools not fulfilling the requirement that students develop career and

program plans.

"Agreed," responded the Department of Education.

"The completion of the career and program planning process is mandatory at Grade 9 and embedded into Aulajaaqtut courses at Grades 10 and 11. Schools that have undergone a high staff and administrative turnover may not be following the mandate."

After 21, Nunavummiut without a Grade 12 who are seeking to complete high school are considered adult learners. They face even more daunting hurdles. As the report notes, 52 per cent of Inuit between the ages of 25 and 64 have not graduated high school.

For example, the department's program Pathway to Adult Secondary School Graduation Program (PASS) has a dismal success rate.

"Most of adult learners accepted into (PASS) between fall 2016 and fall 2018 had fewer than 65 credits – not enough to graduate after taking the program," states

the report.

It takes 100 credit to graduate high school. Of the 286 adult learners accepted into the program, nine graduated.

"The Department of Education should review the requirements needed to obtain a high school diploma through the Pathway to Adult Secondary School Graduation program (PASS) and determine whether alternative requirements for obtaining a Nunavut high school diploma should be established for adult learners," recommend the auditors.

The audit also found that between 2014 and 2018 the college's Adult Basic Education core was offered in only four of 25 communities at least three times. During that same period, the course was not offered in 17 communities.

"As a result, adults living in these communities had limited access to upgrading that would allow them to become eligible to enter various Nunavut Arctic College programs, such as preparatory programs, trades programs and the Nunavut

Teachers Education Program," states the report.

Similarly, financial assistance programs present roadblocks for potential graduates and the auditors recommend that Family Services "review its financial aid program to ensure that there are no unintended barriers to adult learners wishing to upgrade their education."

In the introduction to the report, the auditors note the Government of Nunavut is not meeting its Nunavut Agreement Article 23 requirement to increase Inuit participation in government employment to 85 per cent and point to the 1,500 vacant positions.

"Typically, these vacant positions required at least a high school diploma or some form of post-secondary education. Increasing the number of Inuit with high school diplomas or post-secondary education would increase the number of Inuit candidates for these jobs and for other jobs in the public and private sectors," state the auditors.

Government’s engagement efforts missing the target Northern News Services

Considering the long-term rewards possible with a good education – a good job, stable income, sense of purpose and others come to mind – we like to think education is a pretty important issue of concern to all Nunavummiut.

The last government's efforts to eliminate a deadline for a bilingual education including Inuktitut for all high school students should be a concern, in our view. The new proposed deadline is a generation away – 2039 for Inuktitut and 2037 for Inuinnaqtun.

The government noted that it brought education reform consultations to all 25 Nunavut communities and engaged with 829 residents.

This is better than some government consultations we've attended – some in the capital city have drawn zero attendees other than media – but brings the total proportion of those engaged at just over two per cent.

guage requirements for high school graduates, it's surprising to see the lack of interest evident in the results of a government territorial tour and on our own Facebook and website statistics.

As with the government consultations, it's easy to look at the statistics and believe that there's no interest in these important developments.

We can look to our own industry as an example of where the government and perhaps we, are approaching the situation in the wrong way.

The New York Times performed a review of their own news products and found that stories their journalists considered important were going unnoticed and yet usually required a greater investment of time and money. In response, depending on the story, they either stopped pursuing those types of stories, or shifted the way they present them to better meet the needs of their readers.

We're ready to adjust our

approach. The New York Times kept pursuing important stories, but started doing it in a way that was more engaging and hit their intended audience in a more effective way.

The Government of Nunavut could learn a thing or two, too. Perhaps town halls – which on average attract too many Qallunaat and not enough Inuit – are not the way to properly reach the Inuit audience where they are.

The inclusion of territorial media is a start. Nunavut News reaches thousands of Nunavummiut across the territory each week in print and online and we have about the same number of Facebook followers as the territorial government. Awareness campaigns need to involve promotion, but also engagement. Our Facebook page, for example, gets 40 times the attention the government's page does.

In the modern era, it's time for the government to rethink the way it engages with the people it claims to serve. Comments on our Facebook page are proof that Nunavummiut want to be involved in government decisions.

It's time for the government to stop relying only on outdated methods and meet the people where they are.

In my View

I was on the phone a few days ago with someone dear to my heart and we shared deep thoughts around what and who was important in our lives. It didn't take long for personal reflections to kick in.

We have become so busy being busy that people, events, anniversaries, birthdays and connections take a back seat to what we perceive as significant and precious in our lives.

Somehow we leave out words from the heart for the last minute or after it is too late. In my view, we should be expressing our affection and considerations regularly in the same way as we are reminded to talk about a situation or circumstance before it builds up inside of us.

I recall sitting with my late father on his death bed and he said to me very clearly, "There will be a time when you think of me and you will shed tears. When you do, brush them from your eyes and carry on. You have your family to take care of; you have your life to live so don't dwell on my leaving you." This is the kind of conversation that should be taking place with those we consider significant in our lives.

This is not an easy topic to speak about, but those of us who have reached the plateau of maturity of our lives must let our loved ones know that we care about them and that we want the best for them. By giving them

reminders and direction, this will feed them with thoughts of accountability and deepen their roots of responsibility for their children.

Life is precious and we want to ensure that our children will live it to the fullest and to enjoy their children as well.

We live a fast-paced lifestyle and if we do not slow down or stop to think about or evaluate who we are and what we have, then we will miss out in our engagements in our connections with loved ones and we will regret it.

As with our work life and how we balance or pace ourselves, so too in our personal life, we must learn to balance and pace ourselves so that we do not miss out on anything and everyone. Smile, laugh, cry and talk about anything and everything in your life. Take a walk, go for a ride and be totally engaged. Let those close to you know you love them, you care for them and they are on your mind. Share your thoughts and express them from your heart.

Keyootak wants to know why 'boarded up' vacant houses aren't being used Northern News Services

Nunavut's housing shortage is widely known but what remains a mystery is why so many houses sit empty and the quantity appears to be increasing, said Uqqummiut MLA Pauloosie Keyootak.

He asked Housing Minister Patterk Netser to explain Friday what's being done with these "eyesores."

Netser said some of the residences are "past their useful lives", while others are too mouldy. A lack of funds prevents some of them from being renovated so they are consequently boarded up, Netser said.

Damage caused by public housing tenants is a serious issue, the housing minister said.

"Sometimes when you go into a newly constructed unit, it doesn't take very long for the units to become damaged," said Netser. "We have to work with our tenants to look after our units, as we always face financial limitations. We are always working extra hard on these housing issues, but it cannot happen without the cooperation of the public housing tenants."

Keyootak, who represents ᐅᖅᑯᒻᒥᐅᑦ ᒪᓕᒐᓕᐅᖅᑎᖓ Qikiqtarjuaq and Clyde River, ᐸᐅᓗᓯ ᕿᔪᒃᑖᖅ: ᐊᒐᓛᖏᑦ suggested that the same construction design isn't approᕿᔪᓕᖅᓯᒪᐅᖅᑐᑦ priate for all communities as ᐊᖏᕐᕋᕕᓃᑦ "the tundra without bedrock "ᑕᑯᒥᓇᙱᓚᑦ." is constantly changing."

"We're using those piles in all of the communities and we know that the permafrost is starting to melt and it's shifting the house. There have to be different sets of bases used depending on the ground," said Keyootak.

Plant to remove sodium from water best option for Sanikiluaq's woes, CGS minister says

Residents in Sanikiluaq have endured numerous boil water orders over the past two years, including the latest one issued on May 30.

Hudson Bay MLA Allan Rumbolt pressed Community and Government Services (CGS) Minister Lorne Kusugak on May 31 for an update on the GN's progress to address Sanikiluaq's drinking water issues.

Kusugak started off with an apology "because there is a lot of work to be done in that community." He said a feasibility study is in its final stages and the document will be shared with the legislative assembly during the summer sitting.

Kusugak revealed, however, that a desalination plant, which would remove sodium and minerals from water to make it consumable, has been identified as the best option. Yet it's not known if there's sufficient power in Sanikiluaq to operate such a plant.

If not, an alternate power source may have to be considered, said Kusugak.

The CGS minister added that 257 reverse osmosis machines have been installed in residences and public places in the community.

"To date we haven't had any real issues other than ensuring that we do have replacements ready in the community so that we're not waiting to replace the filtration system," Kusugak added.

Government is helping to deteriorate the Inuit language, says Nakashuk

Pangnirtung MLA Margaret Nakashuk says the lack of commitment to provide services in Inuktitut is a source of consternation.

"When we look at our signage in Inuktitut, many of them have spelling errors and government is helping to deteriorate the language," Nakashuk said in the legislative assembly on Friday.

"When you arrive to Iqaluit or even in an airplane, we rarely hear Inuktitut being spoken or have bilingual workers. When I enter the terminal building, the first language I hear is English, although I feel Inuktitut should be the first language spoken. If I enter a taxi, most drivers can't speak Inuktitut and when I go to a hotel, there is no Inuk receptionist most of the time – and including myself, even though I am trying to speak in Inuktitut, I still use English terminology for some words."

Minister of Culture and Heritage David Joanasie said if the Inuit Language Protection Act is being violated, complaints can be directed to Nunavut's languages commissioner for investigation.

Aggu MLA Paul Quassa also expressed his concern that Inuktut is given secondary treatment, even though he said the reason for the creation of Nunavut was to preserve the Inuit language.

"I, too, have seen examples of signage that is wrong. I am not denigrating any other language, but we are in Nunavut and Inuktitut must always be first. It really has to be the first language," he said. "Now, with this in mind, we should look at signage in

Joanasie replied that "perhaps we can direct that Inuktitut always be placed on top and we will look into the Quebec signage (Quassa) referenced and how they operate their linguistic publications."

The minister also made reference to grants of up to $5,000 available to Nunavut businesses to meet Inuktut obligations, but he didn't know how many businesses have applied or been approved through that program.

The Department of Justice has made an offer to an individual in hopes of filling the position of director of forfeiture, acting Justice Minister David Akeeagok announced in the legislative assembly June 4.

The director will be empowered, under the Unlawful Property Forfeiture Act passed in March 2017, to seize the goods used in the crimes committed by drug dealers and bootleggers, as well as their profits. A court must prove the facts before belongings are taken away, Akeeagok noted.

Driver's licences and ID cards still take too long to acquire, Rumbolt insists

Hudson Bay MLA Allan Rumbolt says he's been bringing up – for close to a decade – the issue of driver's licences and general identification cards taking too long to acquire and he raised it again in the legislative assembly on June 3.

"I must sound like a broken record and nobody likes the sound of a broken record," said Rumbolt. "That being said, I will continue playing the tune until a solution is found."

David Akeeagok, Minister of Economic Development and Transportation, said his department is still trying to sort out electronic applications.

"It is slow and it is tedious and I do ask that members be patient on this," said Akeeagok.

Rumbolt replied, "Members have been patient. It has been nearly 10 years that I have been bringing this up and we still have the same issue."

The Sanikiluaq MLA then asked about the status of a promised 1-800 number that Nunavummiut can call when they encounter difficulties with their applications.

Canada Goose brings warmth to Cambridge Bay

Ikaluktutiak/Cambridge Bay More than 100 eager sewers showed up at Kiilinik Ilihakvik for a Canada Goose fabric giveaway in Cambridge Bay during the evening of June 4.

"It made a lot of community members really happy," said Mayor Pamela Gross, who's also executive director of the Kitikmeot Heritage Society. "There's a lot of sewers (here). It's a great resource because we can use those modern materials in making parkas or whatever people want."

Cambridge Bay became the eighth community supported through the Canada Goose Resource Centre Program. The seven others are Pond Inlet, Iqaluit, Rankin Inlet, Pangnirtung, Cape Dorset, Iglulik and Kuujjuaq, Que. Canada Goose stated that the program's inception came in 2007 when Pond Inlet sewers Meeka Atagootak and Rebecca Killiktee visited the company's factory in Toronto to demonstrate their traditional Inuit sewing methods. They asked if they could bring home some scraps of fabric to fashion parkas for family and friends.

Since that time close to two million metres of fabric have been donated, according to Canada Goose.

Gross said she'd like to see the company's representatives return to the community again someday.

"The partnership is there and we hope there can be more events happening in the future, different kinds of events, possibly," she said. "We'll see what's in store, but we're hopeful."

Iqaluit high school students walk out for the environment

Iqaluit Inuksuk High School students walked out of their school June 5, spilling onto the streets of Iqaluit.

Students Angela Austria, Cassidy Ann Netser and Mac Pavia organized the walk-out for the environment.

"We were sitting in our social (studies) class and our teacher started talking about the carbon in the atmosphere, actually how we were close to a tipping point, a point of no return. It just kind of occurred to us that we felt there wasn't enough action being done here," said Pavia.

"So we wanted to show that the youth really care about our environment. It was also mentioned that we wanted to be able to exercise our own rights and freedom of speech."

From the high school, more than 50 Grade 9 to 12 students walked down to Four Corners, where the community demonstrated its solidarity.

"Just having cars honking as they drove by at the Four Corners intersection was a really big deal, kind of surreal watching strangers honk for a cause that they just kind of saw right there.

It was nice to see that the community supported us," said Pavia.

From Four Corners, the students moved on to the Nunavut legislative assembly to signal to politicians that youth care. The students want the government to create a youth advocacy board.

"So there could be some sort of dialogue between the youth and the government. We also wanted to ask that climate change be considered a crisis and that it's given a little more attention, because at the end of the day it's going to be my generation that

"If the environment has been damaged so badly that we can't live off of it there's not much for me or my kids. We also asked for stronger environmental policies to be put in place."

The event took three weeks to plan.

"I think the goal of this one was to try and open up the dialogue between students and government and show that there are enough students out here who care. Hopefully next year this will be carried on," said Pavia.

Iglulik prepares for elders gathering

Iglulik Invitations have been extended to Nunavut and Nunavik communities to send participants to an annual elders gathering during the second week of August.

Between 200 to 300 elders are expected to attend the event in Iglulik.

"They're going to be talking about social problems and tradition," said Greg Morash, Iglulik's senior administrative officer.

There will be a community feast and various recreational and social activities throughout the week, Morash added.

Local residents are being asked to billet the visiting elders in their homes, a responsibility that will result in compensation from the hamlet.

Municipalities must pay for the travel costs and registration for elders from their communities. There are several funding avenues each municipality can approach to help cover expenses,

New power plants celebrated

Kinngait/Cape Dorset and Auyuittuq/Grise Fiord A ceremony was held May 24 to officially mark the opening of Cape Dorset's new power plant, which has been in operation for a few months.

In addition to being more reliable and fuel efficient than the older model, the new plant was built farther away from the community, almost a kilometre from the hamlet office.

"It's a lot quieter in town here. People used to complain there was too much noise," said Mayor Timoon Toonoo. "When they moved it, people got so excited here in the community."

The Cape Dorset celebration was to be followed by another ribbon-cutting ceremony much farther to the north, in Grise Fiord. The official opening of the new power plant there was scheduled for June 7. The previous power generation unit was the oldest in the territory, having been installed in 1963.

Qulliq Energy Corporation has 11 more power plants it aims to replace at a total estimated cost of $275 million.

The next communities in line to get new power plants are Rankin Inlet, Coral Harbour, Chesterfield Inlet and Pond Inlet, with work scheduled to get underway in the fall.

Greenland donates $100,000 toward food security in Iqaluit in wake of last year's Northmart fire

Iqaluit The Government of Greenland has donated $100,000 to help improve food security in Iqaluit, a move prompted by media coverage following last November's Northmart warehouse fire.

The funds are being turned over to the City of Iqaluit's Makkuttukkuvik Youth Centre cooking club, the Apex District Education Authority's School Food Security and Nutrition program and the Iqaluit District Education Authority, to support cooking clubs and programs at the Inuksuk, Aqsarniit, Joamie and Nakashuk schools, Elisapee Sheutiapik, minister responsible for poverty reduction, announced in the legislative assembly on Thursday.

"This incredible contribution will help build food preparation skills for the youth of Iqaluit and create lifelong skills to help build food security. It's a wonderful example of Pilimmaksarniq in action," Sheutiapik said. "The Government of Nunavut values our continued friendship with Naalakersuisut, Government of Greenland and we look forward to fostering our relations in the future. I want to formally and publicly thank them for this incredible gift; it means so much to the community of Iqaluit. As we all know, food insecurity remains a reality for far too many Nunavummiut and the impacts of it are far-reaching.

"As in other years, we focused on pijitsirniq, serving the community, by working hard to improve our school community food bank, as well as local fundraising initiatives like a lemonade sale for Nanook School after they lost their land program tent to fire."

Lonsdale says another major focus is piliriqatigiiniq, working together for a common purpose.

"We want to thank all the outside agencies like Family Services, RCMP, fire officials, the district education authority, the Nunavut Teacher Educa-

tion Program, the Department of Education and more. We can better service our students

when we all work together," said Lonsdale.

We swallowed the pill and our team – publisher/CEO Bruce Valpy, co-ordinating editor Michele Taylor, digital marketing director Gabe Powless and Nunavut News editor Casey Lessard – travelled to Facebook Canada's Toronto headquarters May 27 to 29 for three days of learning and networking with other publishers facing similar challenges.

We'll meet again in Montreal in July and at Facebook's global headquarters in Menlo Park, Calif., in August.

Joining us are Glacier Media, The Discourse, Daily Hive, The Tyee, the Observer Media Group, Winnipeg Free Press, Village Media, Brunswick News, Le Soleil and Postmedia. The Walrus is auditing the program, as well.

We're sure each publisher will identify different challenges and test different solutions. We are free to adopt any idea presented at the table, but we are working under Vegas rules, meaning we can't share publicly what the other teams are doing without their permission.

Our team returned home with notebooks full of ideas to help meet

the needs and desires of our readers and supporters. You should expect to see many small changes and perhaps some big ones, over the next year and beyond.

We are excited to start work on a project that works for Northerners and we need your support. User feedback is critical to the process and we will be asking you what you want, what you need, why we are part of your life and what we can do to be a better part of your life.

Fishing derbies hand out the cash Rankin Inlet and Arviat host big-money cod derbies

It was all about the cod in the Kivalliq region late last month.

Rankin Inlet and Arviat both hosted fishing derbies on the same weekend – May 24 to 26 – and there was big money on the line for whoever could catch the longest fish.

And if you notice the final results, both derbies were dominated by women.

Rankin Inlet's derby was won Kayla Katrokra, who caught a cod measuring 23 7/8", which was good enough for her to pocket the $10,000 top prize. Monica Pissuk was second and earned $8,000 while Mary Ann Tattuinee was third and won $6,000.

Jake Pissuk was in the mix, ending up 6th to win $3,000 to go along with the $10,000 he won earlier this month in the community's trout fishing derby.

In Arviat, the top three finishers were women as well. Natasha Komakjuak came out on top with a cod which measured 69.5 cm, which was worth $10,000 to her for the win. Lucy Kaludjak was second with a 67 cm cod, good enough for $6,000 and Maggie Marik took third and won $4,000.

Robin Kapak Suwaksiork won a Calm Air pass and Anita Ulimaumi won a scooter as door prizes.

Day camp training set to begin Yellowknife The 2019 edition of the Get Happy Summer Day Camp program is fast approaching and the training for this year's camp will be happening later this month in Yellowknife.

It's being operated by the Recreation and Parks Association of Nunavut (RPAN) and Dawn Currie, RPAN's executive director, said there are close to 100 people who will be taking part

in the week-long training, which gets underway on June 17.

Several communities will be taking part in this year's programming, including Pond Inlet, Arctic Bay, Iqaluit and Sanikiluaq, to name a few.

Time to play ball Kangiqliniq/Rankin Inlet The Rankin Inlet Youth Fastpitch Little League is returning for another season under the tutelage of Robert Kabvitok and Holly Mercer.

It's open to boys and girls between the ages of 11 through 14 with games being played once or twice a week, the days of which have not yet been confirmed. What is known is that the league will run for six weeks beginning in mid-June.

The team draw for this season will happen today, June 10, with each registered player being placed on a team for the duration of the season.

Sport conference registration open Nunavut The 2019 Recreation and Sport Leadership Conference is happening in Iqaluit this coming October and registrations are now being accepted.

The theme for this year's conference is Our Knowledge, Our Communities and there will be plenty of sessions and workshops over the course of the three-day event.

This year's keynote speaker will be Russ Sheppard, the man responsible for the Grizzlies lacrosse team from Kugluktuk.

The Nunavut Soccer Association and Volleyball Nunavut will also be hosting coaching symposiums during the conference and the Sport and Recreation Awards will be handed out.

So the nominations are open for the 2019 Sport and Recreation Awards and this is one of my favourite times of the year.

I get to play the prognostication game and pick out who I think should win what. So without further ado, let's see who I would pick ... if I had a choice: Team of the Year: Canada Winter Games boys hockey team Let's begin with the easiest one of the lot.

They may have went in as the 13th seed in the boys hockey tournament but they didn't play like it when they hit the ice to take on Yukon in their very first game, which was a 5-3 win. Bradley Nowdlak-Fraser of Iqaluit will be the answer to a trivia question for the rest of his life as he scored the team's firstever goal at the Games.

Now, it didn't exactly go as planned as the boys wouldn't win another game but it wasn't like they had the friendliest of schedules.

They were forced to play four games in less than 36 hours, after all. And in talking with Martin Joy, the team's head coach, it seemed the organizers weren't exactly willing to make any sort of adjustments. They were the 13th seed, after all.

No matter what, the boys did exceed all expectations – they won a game – and that's good enough to get them the award.

Honourable mention: Kivalliq Canucks, Maritime-Hockey North Junior C Championship; Kugluktuk High School Grade 6 boys team.

Male Athlete of the Year: Eekeeluak Avalak, wrestling Find me another young athlete in Nunavut who's had a better last little while than "Eekee."

Cambridge Bay's own has torn it up on the wrestling mat and put the icing on the cake by winning silver at the Wrestling Canada U17 Canadian Championships earlier this year.

And he's only 15.

He has a great coach in Chris Crooks, who has done a great job in keeping him grounded and realistic. At that same event where he won silver, Avalak got the chance to try out for the team that would head to the Pan-American Championship. He didn't qualify and he didn't even win any of his matches. He didn't care. Crooks said it was all about getting him experience because he wanted to compete.

Avalak is going to the Western Canada Summer Games this August and you know he's the prohibitive favourite.

Female Athlete of the Year: Taryn Lavallee, speedskating Now, you could pick any one of the Nunavut speedskaters that went to the Canada Winter Games this past February for this award but Taryn Lavallee noses them out for one reason.

Lavallee set the new Nunavut mark in the girls 1,500-metre race during the repechage round. It didn't end the way she wanted as she was disqualified. But she still owns the record.

She also set personal bests in the 500metre and so did her teammates, Akutaq Williamson-Bathory and Emma Carpenter.

She will get a chance to try out for the 2020 Arctic Winter Games speedskating team and don't be shocked if she ends up being a force on the ice in Whitehorse.

I could say Martin Joy, coach of the Canada Winter Games boys hockey team and how he managed to get those boys prepared for the biggest event of their hockey lives.

I could say Chris Crooks, who's coached Nunavut to so many great results over the past few years, especially Eekeeluak Avalak.

I could say Donald Clark, head coach of the Kivalliq Canucks, who took his boys to within one game of the final at the MaritimeHockey North Junior C Championship.

I could say Liam Clarke, who helped mastermind Kugluktuk's young soccer players to tournament wins in Yellowknife.

I could say Robert Kabvitok and Holly Mercer, both of whom have brought the Rankin Royals girls volleyball team to where they're at and who have started a youth baseball league from the ground up.

Pick one. You won't be wrong. Speaking of Kabvitok and Mercer ...

Special Recognition: Robert Kabvitok and Holly Mercer You need to have good people in a community to keep a program alive. You need someone to put in the time to help keep a program alive.

Kabvitok and Mercer have done that with the Rankin Royals, putting in so many hours over the past few years to help develop a great junior team that will keep volleyball growing in the community.

They've also been the duo behind the youth baseball league in Rankin Inlet with the hope of building Little League in the community.

He's done so much for that community and I always like to joke about even if there's nothing going on in Arctic Bay, there's something going on in Arctic Bay because of Levi.
