Nunavut's cruise ship tourism season sets sail on July 28 and Pond Inlet is positioning itself to reap substantial benefits.

The community has increased the landing fee to $75 per passenger this summer, up from $50 per passenger last summer.

In 2018, a total of 22 cruise ship visits generated $250,000 in landing fee revenue for the community. The bulk of that money has been reinvested in local jobs, such as tour guides, country food distributors, shuttle bus drivers, cultural performers and artists, according to Ernest Merkosak, Pond Inlet's economic development officer.

Pond Inlet is expecting 17 cruise ship visits this year, by far the most of any Nunavut community.

"We have local businesses that are benefitting from this," Merkosak said of the injection of visitor expenditures.

He added the Hamlet of Pond Inlet has a pot of $10,000 to purchase local art that it sells at the gift shop in the community's visitors centre. Artists and craft-makers are also able to do business directly with tourists, said Merkosak.

Thirteen communities are set to receive cruise ships in 2019: Arctic Bay, Cambridge Bay, Cape Dorset, Coral Harbour, Gjoa Haven, Grise Fiord, Iqaluit, Kimmirut, Kugluktuk, Pangnirtung, Pond Inlet, Qikiqtarjuaq and Resolute.

Summer students and various GN staff will pose questions to passengers about spending habits.

There are some data that have already been gleaned over the past few years.

"We know that from every (cruise ship) visit to a community, between 20 and 40 community members directly benefit," said Sebastian Charge, manager of Tourism Development for ED&T. "We also know that cruise passenger spending can be sporadic. In some communities they may buy nothing, in others they may generate tens of thousands in direct purchases buying marine mammal products – if possible, to import to their country – prints, carvings, and handsewn items such as mittens and kamiiks in just a couple of hours. The 2015 Visitor Exit Survey estimated spending of $670 per passenger per voyage."

Charge added cruise operators often work with the Nunavut Development Corporation and Inuit arts organizations and galleries to purchase items in bulk for their gift shops or as gifts for their passengers; they commission pieces of arts to display on their ships; and passengers donate to charitable foundations, via onboard auctions or other means, that are paired with causes in Nunavut.

In Cambridge Bay, assistant senior administrative officer Jim MacEachern sees more advantages than disadvantages to cruise ships.

"There's no question that there's disruption to the community when cruise ships come in, but Cambridge Bay's

always been very supportive of cruise ship visitors as long as it's a win-win," he said.

The community's caterers, throat-singers, dancers and other performers and guides "like sharing their culture, knowledge and traditions ... (and) our main goal is to ensure that all those people involved are compensated, and compensated as well as possible," he said.

Art sales is another way to put money in residents' pockets, but one challenge is ensuring enough pieces are available during cruise season because artists don't tend to stockpile work, according to MacEachern.

At a GN-sponsored tourism summit in Iqaluit in April, there was talk of educating passengers to keep community disruption to a minimum, said MacEachern.

"Don't walk in the middle of the road and block traffic for two hours, don't walk into somebody's cabin or their house unless you're invited, don't take pictures unless people give permission," he said of some of the advice that cruise ship companies are being asked to relay to their guests.

Cambridge Bay is expecting seven cruise ship visits this year, the second-most among Nunavut communities. The massive passenger vessels were shut out of the Kitikmeot community last year due to unusually thick ice.

To the west in Kugluktuk, a 198-passenger cruise ship is expected to pull in on Sept. 2 so passengers can disembark at the end of their journey and then the vessel will set off on a new adventure with a different group of tourists.

That's the extent of cruise ship activity on the calendar in Kugluktuk.

However, Mayor Ryan Nivingalok would embrace greater numbers.

"I'd welcome that," he said.

"We have a cultural centre that's open and people carving and sewing, but it's really up to them in the end if they want to come or not."

Merged airline flight schedule still many months away; loyalty program will remain

Canadian North and First Air confirmed July 10 their merger – already granted regulatory approval with several conditions – is now officially complete on paper.

However, it will still take 18 to 24 months for the full integration to be concluded on the ground and in the air, stated a news release.

The combined airline's flight schedule will be

released publicly several months before it takes effect, the airlines stated.

Until then, "customers will continue to book, fly and ship cargo with either airline," stated the release.

Eventually, the Ottawabased merged airline will be known only as Canadian North and the planes will bear the familiar red and white colours of First Air with the inuksuk logo.

Canadian North's Aurora Rewards loyalty program will

be expanded to all scheduled flights operated by First Air, and Aeroplan Miles can also be redeemed for free flights, the airlines noted.

The 1,600 employees of both airlines will gradually be brought together to handle flight reservations, fare products, operational processes as well as fleets and facilities.

The news release made no mention of job losses, but it does commit to leading "the aviation industry as a top employer, with continued

focus on recruiting Inuit and other Indigenous team members for excellent careers within this sector."

Quebec-based Makivik Corporation and the Inuvikbased Inuvialuit Corporate Group (ICG) proposed the combining of the two dominant airlines in July 2018.

They stated then, and reiterated in Wednesday's news release, that "operating overlapping flight schedules with aircraft capacity that has far exceeded demand on

most routes has contributed to higher airfares and cargo rates while impeding their ability to invest in improving their operations."

In approving the merger in June, Transport Canada set the following terms for the combined airline: No price increases for both passenger travel and cargo delivery beyond those related to operating costs.

No cash, no service – that's the new rule being put in effect by Iqaluit's taxi companies come July 15.

It's due to the high number of customers not paying for their taxi rides.

Caribou Tuktu Cabs drivers, along with the handful of small independent companies, will now charge the $7 fare in advance.

"It's already in the bylaw," said Philippe Le Lann, who owns Prime One Taxi and is one of the four smaller companies.

The move is supported by the City of Iqaluit's Bylaw 590, the Taxi Bylaw, which states, "The taxi driver may request the passenger to pay the fare in advance."

"It's gotten out of control," said Caribou Cab's owner Danny Savard.

In Whitehorse, he says, where the rides are metered, drivers ask for a $30 deposit in advance.

Long-time driver Nasser Haymour says new drivers can lose up to $70 a day.

"For the veterans, they start to know who the offenders are, so they lose on average maybe $30 a day," said Haymour.

Savard says race often figures into the equation, as well.

"The black drivers get it 20 times worse than the ones that are white," he said.

"A customer took a driver for three rides. Three stops. She got out and she said, 'I asked for a white driver. I'm not paying you.'"

Savard and Haymour say that's not unusual.

While there may occasionally be a bad apple, Savard says Caribou Cabs is attempting to clean the business up on their end.

"They get caught. A few left town. They're never coming back," said Haymour.

tion, it's worse at night, and during the day youth are more often the culprits.

"During the day the biggest suspects are young kids. 'Mum's going to pay at home.' They get out a couple of doors down, go out the back, and disappear," said Haymour.

The new dispatch system recently installed, which includes a tablet in every Caribou Cab car, also has a video and sound recording system.

That move, said Savard, is helping resolve disagreements between customers and drivers. And it will help with oversight to ensure drivers are paid.

"We can make arrangements if people call dispatch. We're going to allow this at the beginning, see if it works. If they call dispatch and make arrangements, someone will pay at the other end, and if it works, we'll continue to give the service to that address," said Savard.

"If we don't get paid at that

address, we have a digital system, we'll lock it (the address) until we get paid. We are not going to send service until you pay X amount in fare."

Haymour understands most parents don't want to give the kids the money.

"As long as the parent calls.

"Because, a lot of times, the kids have been told they can rip off taxi drivers. They can get away with it because they're kids," he said.

Savard realizes the new rule may be met with push back at the beginning.

"That's why I waited for the tablets that are recording. We'll have footage that protects the driver.

"People are looking for ways not to pay. Any reason whatsoever. You smell bad, you drive too fast, you drive too slow, you skipped a stop sign," he said.

"Altercations with the driver to push them (the drivers), then the fury on Facebook. I've been checking the

footage, and it's not all what they (the customers) say."

Drivers can face intimidation, threats and violence. For immigrant taxi drivers, this can prove especially difficult.

"It depends on the country they come from. Some countries, if you say the wrong word, you're condemned. There are no human rights there," said Haymour.

"So, if someone threatens them, they think it's the end of the world, like back home."

Savard says the number of complaints against drivers have lessened since the tablets were installed. Valid complaints, supported by video footage, amount to an estimated 50 per cent.

But now that drivers are aware that they are also being recorded, he expects that number to drop, as well.

"We're tightening up the screws all the way around in the industry," said Savard.

A new take-out eatery and general grocery store named Hunter's Market opens its doors Tuesday morning in the capital.

The shelves are stocked and the kitchen is almost ready to go.

"It's the concept we came up with, to have take-out and have people shop at the same time if they need basics for their house," said Hussein Mahmoud who, with his brother Ali and father Bassam, decided to take the plunge a couple of years ago.

The patriarch of the family has been in Iqaluit for a decade, while Hussein has travelled back and forth from Ottawa, where he owned gyms. He sold his shares, and invested in Iqaluit, with his family.

"I didn't want to fully do

a restaurant, and me and my brother wanted a store, more than a restaurant because, to be honest, it's less maintenance. I grew up in restaurants because of my dad and I've always leaned away from them because of the quality of life," said Hussein.

The sons also wanted to offer their father an opportunity to supervise a kitchen.

"He's in his 60s now, and we wanted to give him something that was his. He'll make sure everything's up to par and running properly. For now, this is mostly for my dad."

A death in the family took Bassam out of town, and the grand opening is being planned for when he returns.

"For the soft opening, we'll be doing pizza slices, breakfast sandwiches all day, and sandwiches," said Hussein.

"And when my dad gets back, we'll have a grand open-

ing, with a full-blown menu."

That menu is: breakfast until 10:30; breakfast sandwiches all day; Greek food – mainly beef and chicken, and possibly lamb, skewer dishes and gyro wraps; pizza; club sandwiches; and burgers.

Hussein explains the new establishment's name: "It's my (three-year-old) son's name and we're also half Aboriginal, we're Mi'kmaq. I just though thought, in both ways, it was proper. And there are a lot of hunters here."

The family has connections in Pangnirtung for char filets, which is also on the menu.

"We're also going to sell some in the freezer. Country food is kind of like when you can get it, so when we get it, we will be putting some in the freezer for sale," said Hussein.

He also plans on having a small area where he can

sell fishing supplies and other items people might need to go out on the land.

Hussein has trademarked the name and is pondering the possibility of branching out into other Nunavut communities.

"You definitely need the right business partners for that, people from the area.

In my first venture, with the gym, we did open multiple locations. Those things just sort of happen, people come into your life. If they see what you're doing, they might have opportunities elsewhere. You have to let things flow," he said.

"But right now, the concentration is here."

Hussein was expecting a letter from the fire marshal Monday afternoon and, with that final paperwork in hand, the brothers would be set to open at 7:00 a.m. July 9.

We at the grassroots level are hoping that the group who can help make a difference in our lives will wake up one morning and say enough studying, let's roll up our sleeves and address the addiction crisis, let's put our elders back on the pedestal, let's put our people back in control and the wish list continues.

Ironically I have to refer to a recent study that shows one in five households are carrying 'hidden homeless' and probably more; 35 per cent of households suffer from overcrowding and again probably more; the lack of adequate housing has been linked to physical and mental health issues not to mention hunger, abuse, neglect and general poor living conditions with a rise in communicable diseases such as tuberculosis and respiratory related issues.

These are not added pressures, but tangible realities of what our people are living through. Approximately two years ago it was estimated that 3,000 units were required across Nunavut and I daresay that this figure has probably increased above that.

With the creation of Nunavut we expressed that we wanted to re-ignite the desire of carving out our own destiny through autonomy, economic development, writing and adopting our Nunavut-made education policies, regulatory regimes for mining and industries, ensuring infrastructure for growth and sustainability and here we are going through study after study after study. Hunters seek increase in polar bear tags Non-invasive research ongoing into health of predators

As research progresses into the fate of Nunavut polar bears in the face of climate change, Kitikmeot harvesters are hoping for greater clarity and, perhaps, the return of a greater number of hunting tags.

James Qitsualik, chair of the Gjoa Haven Hunters and Trappers Association, says the polar bear population around the Kitikmeot community is on the rise.

In Gjoa Haven, the number of polar bear tags in the M'Clintock Channel has been reduced to 12 from 33 in the past. James Qitsualik, chair of the Gjoa Haven Hunters and Trappers Association, is confident that tags issued should increase again, even if modestly.

"We're seeing healthy bears, but we're seeing an increase in (bear population) so much so that we're seeing a lot more bears in Gjoa Haven, especially young male bears that tend to get pushed out of prime locations by these bigger bears," said Qitsualik.

The Government of Nunavut, after consulting with the Nunavut Wildlife Management Board, decides how many polar bears can be hunted by each community.

One of the conditions in the M'Clintock Channel, northwest of Gjoa Haven, is to only harvest one female for every two males, a ratio that Qitsualik called "ridiculous."

"They don't do that with whales, muskox or any other tagged animal," he said. "They should just give us the tags and, here, get your bear."

In Cambridge Bay, the number of tags has dropped to seven from 15 in the past, said Bobby Greenley, chair of the community's Hunters and Trappers Organization (HTO).

"It does affect a lot of the (HTO) members. A lot of people live off of that type of hunting at that time of the year," he said. "There's some food for the community and they get

to sell the hide and have some money coming in for themselves."

Rather than wait on the GN to raise the number of tags again, Cambridge Bay has been in negotiation with Ulukhaktok to acquire some of that NWT community's unused tags in the same zone, said Greenley.

Gjoa Haven harvesters have been determined for decades to use noninvasive techniques to monitor polar bear health and population, said Qitsualik.

Many community members believe the use of helicopters, tranquilizer darts and tracking collars are harmful to the animals.

To further the non-invasive approach, Gjoa Haven harvesters have teamed up with Genome Canada, a not-for-profit organization that's funded by the Government of Canada, for a research program known as BearWatch. It also includes university scientists and the GN's Department of Environment.

Bears' hair and fecal samples are collected for DNA analysis.

BearWatch has resulted in a database that combines Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit – traditional knowledge – with "polar bear genetic identity and ecological and physiological measures that permit assessment of bear health," according to the project's website.

BearWatch is a program that has brought together harvesters in Gjoa Haven with southern scientists as well as GN researchers. "They're very interested," he said, adding that there's also talk of expanding BearWatch's non-invasive practices to Greenland and Alaska.

Portable cabin ready to go

Gjoa Haven Many Nunavummiut enjoy their time away at a cabin but building the shelters at a remote site can take a lot of resources and coordination.

In Gjoa Haven, Allen Kaloon, his son Kenneth, George Hikoalok, Simienoi Jr. Samok, and Samson Jr. Kaloon combined efforts recently to put together an eight-by-twelve-foot cabin on plastic runners that can instead be towed to a chosen location.

"My father has been building kamotiks all his life so I'm sure he had the idea of building (a cabin) on sleds made (with) plastic pipes," said Kenneth.

"Also, we have been cutting the plastic pipes for sled runners for many years. They come in pretty handy and last long.

The sled (under) the cabin is very easy to push when it's on the sea ice, (it) can glide too."

Working on the project intermittently, it took about three weeks to construct the cabin, said Kenneth. The lumber was purchased through the Co-op and the plastic pipe was salvaged from an old, unused water pipe in the community, he added.

It was the first cabin on runners they built and there has been a great deal of interest in it, according to Kenneth.

"Another activity will help youth make connections between science and their community during a community mapping project. Throughout the week, participants will highlight places of cultural significance, different careers in the community and places they've experienced STEM," states Actua.

Actua summer camps return to Nunavut

Nunavut Actua is back in Nunavut for the summer, delivering STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) camps to children across the territory.

Actua is holding the camps in 22 communities through-out the summer.

"Actua's week-long STEM camps will offer hands-on, community based activities that build youth skills and confidence in STEM. The goal is to have participants recognize how these skills can be used at school, in their community, and can further translate into a career," according to the news release.

"Each camp will start with exploring ocean monitoring, environmental management and biodiversity in our ocean systems. Using Sphero robots, youth will explore GPS systems and the role this technology plays in caribou migration and the factors that impact their journey. They'll then take to the skies and explore satellite technologies by learning about data col-

nization.

Char are running, walrus hunts underway, eggs collected

Sanirajak/Hall Beach The change of seasons came early in Hall Beach, said Abe Qammaniq, vice-chair of the community's hunters and trappers association.

The snow melted about two weeks early and the sea ice gave way about a week ahead of normal, he said.

"The fish are maybe a week ahead also, running the coast," he said.

Some residents are catching Arctic char in nets and drying them on racks at their cabins. As the fish get fatter in later summer, the char are filleted, placed in storage bags and stashed in the freezer for winter consumption, said Qammaniq.

Walrus hunting season is also underway. Much of the prey will be buried or "cached" to ferment – a Northern delicacy – and will be dug up from the gravel once frozen, he said.

Egg picking season has wrapped up. Community members gathered the eggs of snow geese, eider ducks, Arctic terns, loons and seagulls. Sightings of caribou have been sparse so far, Qammaniq added.

Best of all, the mosquitoes have not yet emerged in "hordes," he said.

Gathering to honour missing Pangnirtung's Mary Papatsie

Ottawa The Papatsie family, together with Tungasuvvingat Inuit, will host a gathering July 20 to remember and honour Mary Papatsie.

Papatsie, who is originally from Pangnirtung but lived in Ottawa for more than 15 years, has been missing since May 2017. She was 39 at the time.

"One of the most difficult things about coming together to remember Mary is that we still do not know what happened to her. Having this gathering will allow us to grieve together, remember and honour my sister but, it is hard to have closure if we have no answers," stated Papatsie's sister Miika Papatsie.

Papatsie's disappearance is being investigated by Ottawa Police Major Crimes Unit. However, the Papatsie family have not been provided with updates from the Ottawa Police Service and remain in the dark as to what happened to her, Please see page 12 for more

"Mary was an easy person to love and a caring individual.

"Her laughter was contagious and we all miss her so much," stated Papatsie's brother Tommy Papatsie.

Funding from the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls helped make the gathering possible.

"This will allow family and community members to come together to honour, heal and grieve for Mary. The funding has also allowed family members from Nunavut and other areas of Canada to participate in the gathering," stated Tungasuvvingat Inuit, which submitted the funding proposal.

"The Papatsie family would also like to acknowledge the generous support from Donna and Ricky Kilabuk and the entire community of Pangnirtung for their fundraising efforts, along with all the family and friends that contributed to the family's Facebook fundraiser."

First Air also provided flight discounts.

The gathering, open to all community members, will include an Anglican service followed by a feast of country foods, refreshments, games and music. It takes place at the Richelieu-Vanier Community Centre in Ottawa from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., July 20.

Cambridge Bay youth soaking up knowledge, sights in Toronto

Toronto Four members of the Mayor's Youth Advisory Council (MYAC) and two chaperones set off for a week-long trip to Toronto on July 5. They were getting feedback from professors and senior students at York University, where they stayed, about initiatives they're working toward.

"There's a cultural exchange component too. There's kids from down there that they're meeting with and talking to – lots of friendships form really quickly," said Marla Limousin, Cambridge Bay's senior administrative officer. Other items on the itinerary were to include shopping at the Eaton Centre, a Toronto Blue Jays baseball game, lounging at the beach, a side trip to Niagara Falls, the Native Canadian Centre of Toronto, the Ontario Science Centre, a stop at Canada's Wonderland, horseback riding an IMAX movie and bowling. MYAC is responsible to relay the community's youth issues to hamlet council.

Youth councillors, ages 14 to 18, focus on topics such as sports and recreation; culture; and science, technology, engineering and math.

They work through various issues; record minutes and other engage in other official council procedures; and they hold fundraising activities such as dances, which helped pay for this trip."It's about developing them as leaders," said Limousin. MYAC's full council comprises eight members but some of them had other commitments and therefore didn't travel to Ontario's capital.

New Iqaluit community daycare scheduled to open in September

Iqaluit Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations Carolyn Bennett, together with a variety of Nunavut and Iqaluit dignitaries, celebrated the completion July 8 of Iqaluit's newest daycare, which is tentatively set to open come September.

With a capacity for roughly 60 children, the daycare is the largest in the territory.

"Children deserve a safe and healthy place where they can learn and grow. Congratulations to all involved in the vision and construction of this daycare. Improved access to child care will improve social well-being and the economic security of families in Iqaluit," stated Bennett.

The minister attended the ground-breaking almost one year earlier to the day, on July 10, 2018.

Not-for-profit Tundra Buddies Day Care Society will operate the facility, according to the Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada news release.

That federal department funded the design and construction of the $8 million daycare.

"Investing in early childhood development has significant and life-long benefits for children, families and their communities. The Tundra Buddies Daycare Society commends the Government of Canada for its efforts and contribution to the community of Iqaluit with this wonderful facility. We look forward to providing quality early learning and child care that embraces our languages, cultures and experiences," stated society co-presidents Jackie Price and Anna Fowler.

The lack of access to childcare in Iqaluit makes it challenging for local employers to attract Inuit into the active workforce, forcing parents to remain home with their children instead of pursuing an education or being available to work, according to the release.

Kudlik Construction Ltd. built the new daycare, while the design came via EVOQ Architecture Inc. The facility is decorated with work of local artists.

With a temperature of 23 C on July 9, Iqalummiut, for the

first time in a few years, didn't have to wear spring parkas in biting wind and drizzle or head to the Inuksuk High School gym.

Sadly, in Cambridge Bay, as Navalik Tologanak reports, the community had seen nothing but rain for the past two weeks, so into the gym went that community's events. But by all accounts, that didn't stop residents from celebrating this special day.

The 2020 National Aboriginal Hockey Championships (NAHC) will happen next May in Regina, of that there is no doubt.

What is in doubt is whether Team North will be a part of it.

The Aboriginal Sports Circle of the NWT has confirmed it will not be part of any future Team North ventures after it announced on July 3 that it would no longer fund the tri-territorial initiative between the NWT, Nunavut and Yukon.

Aaron Wells, the Sports Circle's executive director, said the stakeholders – parents, territorial sport organizations and the national Aboriginal Sports Circle council – were informed first about the decision.

He said the Sports Circle decided to go in a different direction based on the group's new strategic plan, which was crafted last November.

"We're a non-profit organization and we wanted to develop a new plan going forward," he said. "We did interviews with our membership to see what was going right or wrong and the decision was made to be more community-focused."

The mandate of the Sports Circle, he added, is to help develop Indigenous athletes in sport and culture and not just focus on one particular sport.

"We want more youth participating from the grassroots right on up to the elite level," he said. "Working on the NAHC took up so much time and so many of our resources – it ended up being almost a year-long thing. We felt that the best thing to do was to spread out what we have because we can make a better impact in the communities that way."

Before Team North was established, all three territories entered their own teams with little success.

It was decided in 2015 that the territories would pool their resources together and with the blessing of the national council, Team North was born.

According to the Sports Circle's 2018-2019 annual report, sending Team North to the 2018 NAHC in Nova Scotia cost $194,960.

That number includes travel, food, freight, accommodations and other miscellaneous costs.

"It was just too much for us to handle anymore on our own," said Wells. "We had zero help from Nunavut or Yukon for any of that, it was all on us. We can do better with that money and we can have a greater impact on the ground in the communities."

Boot camp for soccer

Iqaluit The Arctic Winter Games Arena has a new tenant for the summer and it involves soccer.

There is a soccer camp happening on the arena turf and everything got underway on July 12 with the first evening of action. The camp will happen every Friday evening from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and it's open to anyone between the ages of 10

He also said there was talk of having a partnership with a territorial sport organization to help run it but it would be tough to establish.

"We did get some help from Hockey North over the years and, to be honest, they were the one group which helped out the most," he said. "They maxed out what they could provide and we're grateful for the help they gave us, but they're limited as to what they can do."

That help from Hockey North, which encompasses the NWT and Nunavut, came in the form of covering some of the costs on the ground prior to the start of each tournament,

said Kyle Kugler, Hockey North's executive director.

"We helped with registering the team and paying those fees," he said. "We also covered the cost for the camps they had in Membertou (N.S.), last year, their ice times for practices and all of the pre-camp work."

As to whether Hockey North will be able to do more or become more involved with the program moving ahead, Kugler said it's too soon to say but he hopes Team North will continue.

"They've (Sports Circle) built up a great program and they've had

Everything is free as the entire camp is being sponsored by Nunavut Moving and Services and it will run until Aug. 9.

Indigenous award up for grabs

Nunavut The Tom Longboat Award is an annual award given to the top Indigenous athletes each year since 1951 and the 2019 edition of the honour is looking for its winners.

One male and one female athlete will be chosen from the nominations received and they will be flown to Toronto for the ceremony later this year. The winners will also get a custommade ring signifying the award win along with a $1,500 bursary to help with their future development.

"Some of them have asked how they can keep this going and who to talk to. If it means Team North misses a year to re-structure everything, then maybe that has to happen but we are more than happy to help with transitioning the program to any group that wants to take over."

Gymnastics dreams come true

Kangiqliniq/Rankin Inlet A group of gymnasts from the Aqsarniit Ujauttaq (Northern Lights Gymnastics) club made their dream come true by raising thousands upon thousands of dollars so they could fly off to Rankweil, (Dornbirn) Austria as part of the Team Canada contingent that performed at the 16th World Gymnaestrada from July 7 to 13.

A total of 22,000 participants from 69 countries were represented at the gathering, making it the largest single sporting event in the world.

Like the Olympics, the World Gymnaestrada is held once every four years.

A new playground in Area 6 is a big hit with kids in the neighbourhood. It officially opened in Rankin Inlet on June 28.

Clark said it's shaping up to be a fun-filled summer for the kids, but there's still one thing missing he'd like to see back.

He said the hamlet is hoping to, one day, have a swimming pool back in the community again.

"A swimming pool is very important to me, so it's going

to be the next big item on my list to strive for once the new arena opens.

"I started this job 12 years ago with a bunch of projects I wanted to get done and the new arena is the last one I had on my original list "So now it's time for me to make a new list."
