Sewing to stop smoking news

Nunavummi Disabilities Makinnasuqtit Society promotes healthy living through pilot project

This winter Nunavummi Disabilities Makinnasuqtit Society (NDMS) is promoting healthy living through its sewing program. Twelve participants have enrolled in this free pilot project since Jan. 15.

At the beginning of each session, program facilitator Issac Mensah educates participants about tobacco-related issues.

His goal is to inform participants about the effects of smoking and encourage a tobacco-free lifestyle.

"It's all about promoting healthy living in the community," said Mensah.

All adults, including non-smokers and inexperienced sewers, are welcome to join the sewing program. The only requirement is participants should not smoke during the three-hour sessions.

The program is held every Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 5 p.m. to 8 p.m in Iqaluit. The sewing classes are taught by two experienced Inuit instructors, Victoria Pauloosie and Annie Kilabuk.

For Kilabuk, sewing provides her with

a sense of accomplishment and peace.

"Your mind is very preoccupied. So you feel more at ease with the life circumstances that you're in. It's very peaceful," said Kilabuk.

Participants can choose to make various winter clothing.

Participant Janna Vassil is determined to make pants for her upcoming travels, while Mi Yeon Kim is making a parka and mittens for her boyfriend.

It is however, more than just sewing a pair of pants that has attracted Vassil to the group.

"It's about being around people. It's very calm and relaxing. And, I get to learn new skills," said Vassil.

Kim, who is originally from South Korea, finds the program a great way to connect with Inuit community.

"They (Inuit) are very nice and welcoming. They know I'm not Inuk. They know I am a beginner (at sewing). They are willing to help me," explained Kim, adding that it is a great opportunity to learn sewing from them.

When not organizing and collecting sewing materials, Mensah too participates

in the program.

"I enjoy the teamwork and the togetherness," he said.

Mensah, who is an Employment Specialist at NDMS, hopes the sewing program will allow the participants to develop skills possibly for future employment or entrepreneurship opportunities.

"So with this program they will be encouraged to sew for themselves and even establish their own business," said Mensah.

He encourages interested individuals to join the program whether its for connecting with others, learning about healthy living, developing sewing skills or a stepping stone to future employment.

The program runs until March. 27 at the Eight-Storey building, unit 110. Mensah can be contacted at 979-2228.

Adopt a School program brings the joy of reading to students Indigo, Chapters and Coles stores help raise funds for schools in need

This year, two schools in Nunavut are reaping the benefits of the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation's 2019 Adopt a School program.

Last fall, the program united with Indigo, Chapters and Coles stores to raise funds for Pond Inlet's Ulaajuk Elementary School and Arctic Bay's Inuujaq Elementary School.

These schools were selected based on their "high-need" for additional monetary support for their school library.

Indigo had provided a free online registry, where the adopted schools could list 50 books. The goal was to bring new books and educational resources to the schools in order to enrich the lives of elementary students.

"We know the power that one book can hold and believe that every child deserves the opportunity to fall in love with reading," said Rose Lipton, Executive Director of the foundation.

This month Nunavut News followed up with some teachers to report the effects this pro-

gram has had on the students.

According to teacher Recbecca Hirtle from Ulaajuk Elementary School, the program has been "phenomenal." The school has recently started purchasing books online and is slowly receiving them.

"The students and teachers are very excited to have brand new beautiful books on our shelves," said Hirtle.

The program has allowed the school to create a new classroom library. Hirtle believes the new books will help increase literacy.

Some students are very eager to read The Diary of a Wimpy Kid, said Hirtle.

"It has been so magical seeing my students' faces when they open the boxes and see the crisp new

books. Books that they have been wanting to read and asked for," explained the Grade 6 teacher.

Some teachers are equally excited to order and receive the books.

"When receiving their first box of books, one teacher said, 'this is better than Christmas!''' expressed Hirtle.

At the request of students, Hirtle has been ordering books about seals and hunting that reflect Inuit culture.

The school was given $10,105 to spend on books.

Teacher Paulette Campbell of Inuujaq Elementary School admitted the school has not yet officially purchased any books.

She mentioned the program allows the school to have a 30 per

cent discount on Indigo purchases with a maximum of $6000 in savings.

Since the discount rate is valid until the next school year, the school is still exploring Indigo's inventory for books that may be of interest to the students, explained Campbell.

So far, the teacher has selected books like My Happy Book and Land Skills Big Book that are written in Inuktitut.

Campbell is happy with the book selection provided by Indigo.

"There are a good number of books that relate to the Inuit culture and environment, Inuit art books, and I was very happy to find Saqiyuq: Stories from the Lives of Three Inuit Women, by Nancy Wachowich," said the teacher.

Future uncertain for Hope Bay gold mining as TMAC seeks financial help Mining company filling the 'low end' of gold production quotas

TMAC Resources, owner of the Doris North gold mine at Hope Bay, needs more money to continue to expand operations and is willing to consider selling the Kitikmeot property.

The junior miner announced Jan. 20 that it's examining options including finding a buyer for Hope Bay, identifying a joint-venture partner, wooing a wealthy shareholder or securing some other form of long-term financing.

TMAC has improved operational performance since pouring its first gold in 2017 but the company hasn't reached its targets, admitted Jason Neal, TMAC's president and CEO. In revealing its 2019 fourth-quarter results on Monday, the company reported production of 24,650 ounces of gold, which was "the low end of our expectations," Neal conceded.

The miner only recorded its first profit – $7.2 million – during the first quarter of 2019, after spending close to $500 million developing the property.

An expansion feasibility study is underway and is expected to be completed before April. The study will show the value of increasing gold production, including mining the Madrid and Boston deposits – for which TMAC already has regulatory permits. Neal, who has a background in mining investment banking, suggested that Hope Bay may be better suited for a company with a "multi-asset portfolio and/or a stronger balance sheet."

In the meantime, TMAC's stock fell to $2.85 per share on Jan. 20 after spending much of the summer over $6.

A workforce of close to 600 relies on the mine site for income, but Inuit comprise only 10 to 15 per

cent of those employees.

Tom Hoefer, executive director of the NWT and Nunavut Chamber of Mines, expressed optimism that Hope Bay will remain viable.

"I believe the fundamentals

are there: gold, in good quantity and quality, in a gold-rich greenstone belt with growth opportunities," Hoefer stated in regards to the 1,000-square-km property, located 125 kilometres southwest of

Cambridge Bay. BHP and Newmont, who remains a shareholder, were among the mining giants who owned Hope Bay but never developed it. TMAC acquired the site in 2013.

Noah Papatsie has not allowed his blindness to bring his spirits down.

Conquering darkness with a positive attitude Iqaluit resident Noah Papatsie on dealing with disability while serving his community

Amid the darkness lies a bright light that radiates with positive energy. Iqaluit resident Noah Papatsie has been legally blind for about 15 years. Yet, it is his positive attitude that has allowed him to move beyond the darkness.

In 2000, while working with the Inuit Broadcasting Corporation, Papatsie had an accident that damaged his right retina. It was believed, the intense light from a shattered light source had blinded Papatsie in his right eye.

Unfortunately, it would take five years to determine why such darkness had befallen him.

Not long after the accident, Papatsie's left eye began deteriorating. Over the years, he waited patiently for doctors to diagnose and treat his eye condition to avail.

Finally in 2005 when his retina became detached, he visited a medical specialist in Ottawa. Immediately, he had to undergo eye surgery.

During his visit down south, the doctors discovered Papatsie suffered from TB, which had attacked his eyes.

"I was suffering for five years," said Papatsie adding his vision could have been saved completely had the TB been discovered earlier.

"They could (have) saved my eyesight after my accident," explained the 50-yearold Inuk.

The years between 2005 to 2007 tested Papatsie's mental strength as he endured numerous negative experiences. He lost his 19 year old son to suicide, his parents died and he progressively lost his left vision until he became completely blind.

"But during those time, I never really gave up," said Papatsie referring to this period in his life.

Instead he accepted and prepared for his fate. Through the Canadian National Institute for the Blind he learned braille, assistive technology, cane movements and developed independent living skills.

Despite facing employment challenges and difficulties accessing local services for the disabled, the Iqaluit-born resident has chosen to remain in the territory.

"I love my community.

That's why I stayed. I love my

family," he explained.

Over the years, Papatsie has been motivated to bring awareness and education about issues related to the disabled community. He does not want anyone to suffer like he did.

"He loves to help a lot of people and that's a good thing," said his daughter Malaya Papatsie.

Today, he remains an active member of the community despite his blindness. He continues to be involved with the Nunavummi Disabilities Makinnasuaqtiit Society and the District Education Authority.

He served as a city councillor from 2013-2015 and 20172019. He also ran for mayor in 2015 and 2019. He believes one wwcan achieve more through a positive attitude.

"I have been amazed and enlightened by working with Noah Papatsie. He has a positive energy that radiates through everything he does.

Noah has the ability to inspire others because of this energy," wrote Councillor Romeyn Stevenson.

"His positive attitude can make us learn more things and learn how to respect others and be kind to others," said his daughter.

GN, Inuit organization renew commitment to work together Government of Nunavut and Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated outline shared priorities

The Government of Nunavut and Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated (NTI) have signed the Katujjiqatigiinniq Protocol which outlines the shared priorities between the GN and NTI. In the presence of government officials and NTI members, Nunavut Premier Joe Savikataaq and NTI President Aluki Kotierk signed the document at the Frobisher Inn in Iqaluit on Jan. 21, renewing their commitment to work together.

"This is just to reinforce our obligations and our commitment to work together for the betterment of Nunavummiut and Nunavut," said Savikataaq.

With "one strong voice" the odds "vastly increase" to get what is desired at the federal level, he said.

Kotierk said, "I think being united on issues that are priorities of both government of

Nunavut as well as Inuit organizations, we can see the fruition of that. And I think we want to replicate that."

The GN and NTI will aim to collaborate in order to improve the economic, health, social and cultural well-being of Inuit in the territory.

Working together, both organizations hope to share information and utilize resources more efficiently to give Nunavut a stronger voice in wider Canadian and international forums.

The Katujjiqatigiinniq Protocol outlines three shared priorities for the organizations. First off is to mobilize Inuit identity and culture. This means GN's programs and services must be in Inuktitut.

Inuit must also be employed and empowered within the GN. Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit must be reflected in government structures and procedures.

The second priority is to foster the quality of life and well-being for Inuit. This

involves building a better economic, social and cultural foundation for Nunavut.

Thirdly, the two organizations hope to ensure Inuit participation in the design and development of policies, programs, services and legislation.

"I think the commitment is that we will meet regularly to talk about the priorities that we have as a territory," said Kotierk.

Both leaders however, admitted there may be disagreements on issues in the future. To combat differences, the GN and NTI plan to work together and discuss issues in order to reach agreements.

The GN and NTI share a history of working together, including the Clyde River Protocol in 1999, Iqqaanaijaqatigiit in 2004 and Aajiiqatigiinniq in 2011.

When asked why the Katujjiqatigiinniq Protocol is being renewed, Kotierk responded, "It's a new decade." This was followed by a loud

This is no longer in the case in Cambridge Bay as the local school bus for elementary school-aged children isn't roadworthy and the education authority and territorial government are at odds over who will pick up the bill for the repairs or replacement.

Alan Sim, chair of the Cambridge Bay District Education Authority (DEA), said "the bus still runs but it is not safe to use" and is asking the Government of Nunavut to pay for repairs.

"The problem there is that we could repair it and we would have very little left to pay a driver and supervisors," Sim stated. "On top of that, after making the repairs, the engine may fail and all the money would have been wasted" (Nunavut News, Jan. 20 edition, 'Cambridge Bay DEA wants GN to take over school bus service').

Nunavut projects vie for Arctic Inspiration Prize money Awards to be announced Feb. 5 in Ottawa

Nunavut is going to either win the $1-million Arctic Inspiration Prize or have a share of it.

The two finalists for the grand prize, which will be awarded on Feb. 5 in Ottawa, both have a footprint in Nunavut.

There's also a possibility of hundreds of thousands more in funding for Nunavut programs in other categories.

Contending for the $1 million, Imaa, Like This: Children and Youth Expressing Themselves Through Music would build on the Iqaluit Music Camp that has been offered for 25 years. It's up against Northern Compass, which would create a support network for students as they transition from high school to post-secondary education.

The prize money would allow the music program to become a daily after-school activity instead of only being offered on Saturday afternoons and during the summer through the Iqaluit Music Society. It would expand from fiddle and accordion lessons to throat singing, drum dancing and traditional Inuit songs for children as young as six. Snacks would also be provided.

Naiome Eegeesiak is an instructor and a former music camp student who, as a youth, was introduced to the fiddle by fellow instructor Darlene Nuqingaq.

"I just remember being really proud of myself when I first learned to play the fiddle. I got to show my parents something new," Eegeesiak recalled, adding that her musical pursuits also enabled

her to travel to British Columbia and Nova Scotia.

She's witnessed the growth of other music camp participants over the years.

"I've seen shy kids who won't leave their mother's knee gain confidence and perform in front of a crowd," she said of the power of music and learning.

Nuqingaq said research shows music education helps to stimulate academic success and post-secondary education opportunities.

"We hope to provide supports to improve literacy and numeracy abilities and promote positive physical and mental health," Nuqingaq stated. "Winning the prize would be a dream come true."

Northern Compass oriented to help Karen Aglukark of Arviat is among the organizers of Northern Compass, who are also hoping to cash in on the big prize money so they can assist high school students in finding their way to colleges, universities or other training programs. Many of the Northern Compass team members, including Aglukark, have a connection with travel program Northern Youth Abroad.

"We find that there's not a lot of resources that they either know they have access to or that are designed specifically to help them with the barriers that they face," she explained.

Campus tours would be another component of Northern Compass.

They plan to install mentors who would alert students to training opportunities in the North and the south, create awareness of funding resources specific to Northerners and teach budgeting skills.

There's also an idea of establishing hubs where Northern students tend to congregate for school such as Edmonton, Winnipeg and Ottawa. Staff on the ground – known as achievement coaches – would be able to provide direct encouragement.

"It's difficult to know you're supported when you're in a silo as a student ... so we want to achieve those local connections when you're away for school," said Aglukark, who's a student at the University of Ottawa studying for a bachelor of arts psychology degree to complement her humanities and political science degree.

Aglukark has already

arranged to have a few midterm exams rescheduled so she can attend the Arctic Inspiration Prize awards ceremony.

She'll be rooting for her aunt Susan Aglukark, whose project the Kamajiit Program, eligible for up to $500,000 in prize money, aims to address high school dropouts and suicide.

"It's very exciting," Karen said of the prospect of a win for both initiatives.

The Rideau Hall Foundation oversees the annual Arctic Inspiration Prize, which was conceived by Canadian philanthropists in 2012 to reward Arctic knowledge and innovation.

Canada Goose launches new Inuit-designed Project Atigi parkas

Nunavut Canada Goose has rolled out 90 new parkas hand-crafted by 18 Inuit designers as Project Atigi expands into its second year.

Profits from parka sales go back into Inuit communities through Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami. Last year's inaugural proceeds were used for education, employment and cultural preservation initiatives, according to a Canada Goose news release. Proceeds from this year's Project Atigi transactions are expected to be double last year's, the news release stated.

Eileena Arragutainaq, a Project Atigi designer and entrepreneur from Sanikiluaq, said, "the community support and response from participating in Project Atigi has been incredible. Being a part of this project for the second year has allowed me to showcase my designs with the world, while shining a light on our decades of tradition and craftsmanship."

The Project Atigi 2020 collection, which includes men's and women's styles, went on sale at Select Canada Goose stores and online on Jan. 23.

Singer Johnny Reid coming to Cambridge Bay

Ikaluktutiak/Cambridge Bay Entertainer Johnny Reid will be the featured performer at the 21st annual Kitikmeot Trade Show in Cambridge Bay in February.

A free concert for the community will be held on Feb. 9 and then Reid will play again on Feb. 10 for trade show delegates.

Reid has released 10 albums and has recorded hits including A Woman Like You, Today I'm Gonna Try and Change the World, Fire it up and Darlin'.

New York Post reviewer Dan Aquilante described the singer's sound thusly: "Take a pinch of Bruce Springsteen, a dash of Bob Seger and enough Rod Stewart to give the mix vocal gravel and you start to get the vibe of this Scottish-born singer/songwriter."

Reid, who performs extensively across the country and around the world, was hitting the road once again when trade show organizer Jim MacEachern made his pitch.

"I reached out to his agent and asked if he'd be interested in adding a stop up in the Arctic to his Canadian tour and he was very interested," MacEachern said.

The theme of this year's Kitikmeot Trade Show, which is nearly sold out, is a play off of the event's initials KTS: Knowledge + Training = Success.

"All of the guest speakers that are coming up, it's all aligned along that theme. The presentations will look at how knowledge and training can (move) companies towards success," said MacEachern.

Threads of Living Memory exhibit features Inuit crafts

Calgary The Glenbow art and history museum in Calgary will put Inuit textile crafts on display in an exhibit called Dynamic Connections: Threads of Living Memory.

The thrust of the exhibit, which opens Feb. 22 and runs for a year, is pieces that represent living or active memory, whether "literal, abstract, simply tactile or full of symbolism," according to information provided by curator Joanne Schmidt.

Among the highlights will be natural dye collages from Taloyoak, of which only 24 were created, natural dye animals, a natural dye cape fashioned by Taloyoak's Selena Tucktoo and macrame pieces hung on caribou antler supports.

"Chosen works act as connecting threads to both the familiar and that which is yet to come and are meant to evoke memory in the viewers," Schmidt's overview reads. "This exhibit explores object memories and the way in which each thread, each fibre, contains a hint of the past… of hands once manipulating them, of smells of the land and in some cases a trail of hands which were all connected to them before their arrival in the exhibit space."

Artists' or their relatives' recollections of their work is included, wherever possible, to give added insight.

Combating germs with a nail club

Sanikiluaq Nuiyak Elementary School is addressing student hygiene with a nail club. It's called Keeping our Nails Neat club, stated Principal Janalee Slaney.

Every Thursday after school, kids can get their nails cut, cleaned and painted. Both manicures and pedicures are free for

any student at the school. The program usually lasts one hour and takes place within an empty classroom.

"They love it," said Slaney.

"They come in and they soak their little hands. and then they clean up their hands. And then we paint their nails. We put moisturizer just like the spa."

After soaking, scrubbing and moisturizing their feet the students are treated to a new pair of socks.

For Slaney it is a real joy to see her students showing off their new nails and socks.

"They're running up to me, 'Look, look, look!'

"Their nails are out and their feet are wiggling and they're just proud of something that they had and took the initiative to come to and do."

Charlie Inuarak, Moses Appaqaq elected QIA community directors

Pond Inlet/Sanikiluaq Charlie Inuarak was the byelection winner in Pond Inlet while Moses Appaqaq took the byelection in Sanikiluaq on Monday as the Qikiqtani Inuit Association elected new community directors.

Inuarak collected 79 votes, outdistancing Katherina Pudluk's 52 votes and Cornelius Kadloo Nutarak's 10.

Moses Appaqaq was named on 66 ballots, giving him the victory over Mick Appaqaq (42 votes), Elijassie Kavik (39 votes), Joe Arragutainaq (14 votes) and Lucy Uppik (nine votes).

The new community directors have been elected to two-year terms.

The Jerry Cans' new album Echoes due out in May

Nunavut The Jerry Can have announced their fourth album, titled Echoes, will be released on May 15.

Atauttikkut, the first track from Echoes, comes out on Friday. A preview is available on YouTube.

The new album, produced by Aakuluk Music, contains 14 songs. The Jerry Cans will be on tour in advance of that, kicking off in New Orleans Wednesday through Monday. That will be followed by nine other stops in Canada in February in March.

The Iqaluit-based band comprises vocalists/throat singers/ accordionists Nancy Mike and Avery Keenainak, guitarist/ vocalist Andrew Morrison, violinist Gina Burgess, bassist Brendan Doherty and drummer Steve Rigby.

Coast Guard plans for more auxiliary vessel sites Several Nunavut communities have expressed interest in hosting search and rescue boats

The Canadian Coast Guard's Community Boat Volunteer Program will put search and rescue vessels in additional Nunavut communities this summer.

Arviat, Pond Inlet and Taloyoak are the next proposed Coast Guard auxiliary locations. Iqaluit, Arctic Bay, Coral Harbour and Qikiqtarjuaq have also expressed interest, according to the Coast Guard. Cape Dorset Mayor Timoon Toonoo said his community also wants to host such a vessel.

"When local search and rescue have to do a search, they use their own boat and

equipment. We are working to get Coast Guard auxiliary.

(They) would own the boat and boat garage," Toonoo stated. "Residents would be very welcoming to the Coast Guard presence for safety and search and rescue."

In Cambridge Bay, which took possession of a 28-foot rescue vessel last August, Wilf Wilcox, the unit leader for the 11-member auxiliary team, said the new boat was quickly pressed into service four times, which represented an unusual burst of activity.

"They went out on a medical distress (call) that was like a 90-mile one-way trip. They were able to go and provide assistance and get back here in a reasonable amount of time

with a reasonable amount of crew," said Wilcox. "I just feel so much better as a unit leader seeing our guys go out on such a high-calibre boat."

He said the vessel comes with powerful outboard motors, plenty of navigational gear, a heater, a good radio and other equipment.

"This boat here puts us in an altogether different class," he said, adding that Cambridge Bay previously made do with an old RCMP vessel.

"We have a boat where we can actually do planning and co-ordinating on the boat ... with those capabilities comes the requirements for lots of training too."

Wilcox noted that Cambridge Bay volunteers are

doing some of that training with larger auxiliary units from Yellowknife and Hay River.

"It's Northerners teaching Northerners. There's some real good trends happening," he said.

Clyde River and Kugluktuk were approved for search and rescue boats in 2019, but Kugluktuk's vessel is due to be delivered this summer.

Gjoa Haven and Rankin Inlet – the site of an inshore rescue boat – were granted search and rescue boats in 2018.

Coast Guard spokesperson Jeremy Hennessy noted that the size of the search and rescue vessel and its crew varies by location.

The Community Boats program also provides funding to purchase related equipment such as lifejackets, navigation lights, flares, survival suits, satellite phones and first aid supplies.

Hennessy added that the involvement of Northerners in

search and rescue missions is critical.

"Local communities are an essential part of SAR in the Arctic, with trained personnel who have extensive knowledge of the specific risks present in different waterways and areas across the Arctic," he stated.

If you're looking to get to the 2020 Arctic Winter Games in Whitehorse this coming March, there is a way to do it without totally blowing up your bank account.

Air North has set up a scheduled flight for parents and fans to make the trip to Whitehorse for the duration of the Games and it's proving to be quite popular. As of press time, more than half of the available seats have been gobbled up.

The only catch is to get the flight, people will have to get to Yellowknife first as the flight won't be making any other stops in between.

Ed Peart, Air North's manager of charters,

said putting the flight out there came after contact from Doug Rentmeister, Team NT's chef de mission for the Games.

"Doug came to us to see what we had in mind for transportation," he said. "We knew the interest would be there and so we came up with a plan to get a sense of how many people would be interested. Making it a scheduled flight had its risks but we had a good feeling it would be well-received and it just made sense to do a direct scheduled flight."

Rentmeister said the original idea was to have a charter flight but there were plenty of inquiries and requests for seats, leading to the decision to make it a scheduled flight.

"We got a real good rate and so we opened it up to everyone who wants to go," he said. "We had talked with other airlines but everything

Junior curlers take on Canada Langley, B.C. Nunavut's best young junior curlers were back on the ice taking on the country at the New Holland Canadian Juniors, which wrapped up on Sunday.

The territory had just one team in action, that being the girls rink of Sadie Pinksen, Christianne West, Kaitlin MacDonald and Lena Chown out of the Iqaluit Curling Club and they were in the seeding pool to round things out. They finished seventh in their pool with one win out of their six games, that coming

This isn't the first time Air North has opened up its fleet for Arctic Winter Games travel involving the NWT; the airline also handled a charter flight for parents and fans heading to the 2014 Games in Fairbanks, Alaska.

That was organized by Louise Schumann of Hay River and was a near-full flight.

Peart couldn't say for certain on how many people from Nunavut had booked into the flight, if any, as of press time but the flight in 2014 did have several Nunavummiut on board, mostly from the Kitikmeot region.

"We're lucky that we can respond to this sort of request and be flexible to others' needs," said Peart. "We always try to work with people and groups to come up with solutions."

Greg Howard and Carmen Kootoo from the Iqaluit Curling Club won the Nunavut Mixed Doubles Curling Championship earlier this month as they came out on top in a three-team playoff in the capital. They will be off to Portage la Prairie, Man., in March to play at the Canadian Mixed Doubles Championship.

The Nunavut Seniors Curling Championship was also held at the Iqaluit Curling Club from Jan. 17 to 19 and featured rinks skipped by Dale Kohlenberg and Peter Mackey doing battle in a best-of-five series to determine the winner. Kohlenberg and

Peart is anticipating a full flight and if that happens, there may be a second scheduled flight but there's no guarantee of that happening.

He said as of press time that a handful of seats remained.

"You never say never in this business because we'll look at all of the options on the table at any time," he said. "We do have our new Yellowknife-Vancouver route available and that's an option for people who may miss out on this flight to get to Whitehorse and join us for the Games."

One thing Rentmeister said can't be helped is the accommodations once the plane lands in Whitehorse.

"The accommodations are going to be the challenge because it's pretty tight," he said.

Tournament hockey time Arviat The 2020 Calm Air Cup Jon Lindell Memorial (JLM) senior men's hockey tournament was on tap in Arviat from Jan. 23 to 26.

Nine teams were set to compete for JLM glory in A Division and B Division action. Competing in the A Division were Eskimo Point, Rankin Inlet, Naujaat, Arviat Kings and Whale Cove while the B Division featured the Arviat Legends, Baker Lake, Chesterfield Inlet and the Arviat Wolves.

The gold medal game for both divisions were scheduled for the evening on Jan. 26 and you can see a future edition of Nunavut News for the recap.

Donald Baker Spence makes up for late start on basketball court

Arviat's Donald Baker Spence quickly achieved one of the goals towards realizing his dream of one day playing college basketball when he was selected to hit the court with Team Nunavut at the upcoming Arctic Winter Games (AWG) in Whitehorse.

Spence, or DBS as he is known to his friends, has thought of little else other than college ball for the past two years.

At just 16 years of age, Spence led the Arviat Wolves to a 2-2 record at this year's territorial tournament in Cambridge Bay – catching the eye of every evaluator in the gym as Arviat's leading scorer and rebounder, while being quite effective at both ends of the court.

Wolves coach Ryan Barbeau said a monumental shift toward Spence becoming a complete basketball player has taken place during the past 90 days.

He said he believes Spence's understanding of the game, leadership and overall skill developed so much because he was so invested in becoming a better player.

"All great athletes have three things in common," said Barbeau.

"They have an obsession with their craft, a desire to improve and a willingness to be coached."

Spence takes full advantage of open-gym time at John Arnalukjuak High School to shoot baskets on his own and join a game after school.

Barbeau said the amicable teenager displays a passion for the sport that you just don't see in many kids and he truly loves the game.

He said Spence also loves to practise and work on his skills.

"For someone who has only been

playing basketball for two years, I have been extremely impressed with his ability and his growth during the past three months."

Spence said was pretty confident he played well at the territorial in Cambridge Bay. And, perhaps even more importantly, his description of his time in Cambridge shows a level of maturity not always found in a 16 year old.

"It was a great experience to meet new people and play against the other good teams," said Spence.

"And it was great to meet the other players from different communities.

"That was my first time in Cambridge Bay and it was an experience I will always remember."

Barbeau said it's awesome to hear and see all the kids interacting with each other and having a good time off of the basketball floor during the territorial.

He said basketball has a special way of bringing people together and the Cambridge tournament was no exception.

"The kids from Arviat had the chance to meet new kids from Baker Lake, Pond Inlet, Iqaluit and Iglulik, as well as other communities," said Barbeau.

"The thought of playing college basketball was always in the back of Donald's mind but, after the territorial, he realized that it may be something that is realistic and extremely possible.

"Donald started playing basketball a little bit later than other kids, especially in the south where some kids are starting to play competitive basketball as early as Grade 4 or Grade 5.

"He has a long way to go in terms of his development – his love for the game is undeniable and

While college ball is still a bit down the road for Spence, the AWG are just around the corner.

Spence will be among the

youngest players on the court in Whitehorse. He will also be among the most competitive on the court and among those enjoying the AWG experience the most away from it.

"I am excited," said Spence. "I want to meet the other AWG players

from Nunavut.

"It is going to be my first time in Whitehorse and I think it's going to be the furthest I have ever travelled.

"I am going to train very hard to be as prepared and ready as I possibly can be for the tournament."

They were in on it as well and Jomboy's video proved it. How did the players escape punishment? They knew what pitches to take and what to swing on. How else do you explain the trash can?

Are the Astros the only team doing it?

Probably not and this has happened before.

Recall when the Boston Red Sox used an Apple Watch, ironically enough in 2017, to try and steal signs against the New York Yankees?

You know other teams have been doing it.

Every team looks for the upper hand and will do whatever it can to get an edge. It's been happening since the beginning of organized sports and it will continue.

There will be another team that will look to go all 007 and steal signs. Whether they get caught is another story.

So let paranoia reign in MLB because that's what the 2020 season will look like. As for the Astros, they should change their name to something a bit more appropriate: The Houston Asterisks.
