Grade 12 student Kiersten Williams, in general, views cultural diversity in her classes as an "eye opening and positive experience." For her, it is an opportunity to learn about different cultures and people. She recognizes the importance and value of creating bonds with students from the south.

"Being Inuk and having many friends from the south, it really helps in the classroom, to be able to relate to some things but also learn new things from other people," said the Iqaluit-born teen.

Diversity in the classroom also fosters an environment for students from the south and beyond to learn about Inuit culture, according to Williams.

"And it's also important for people moving from the south to learn about Inuit culture and what's it like to live in such an isolated place," explained Williams.

Sometimes however, having students from different ethnicities and backgrounds in class has been challenging for Williams. For example, when other students do not understand the importance of hunting in Inuit culture she feels frustrated and upset.

"There's someone that doesn't agree or understand why and how we do things based on our culture," said Williams. "And that's always been one of my challenges growing up is having to explain my culture and why I do things how I do it."

Grade 11 student Jaydin Nunugaq expressed, "it's a great experience," referring to classroom diversity.

Studying with students of different backgrounds is a gateway into gaining new perspectives and ideas for him.

"I generally have a great experience, getting to know new people and working with them in the classrooms," said Nunugaq. "It's always about getting a new perspective on who they are and what they have and what ideas they bring into the class." Although Nunugaq is Inuk, he grew up in an English speaking household.

At school, he can relate to the experience of other students who came from down south, who are also learning Inuktitut.

In his case, despite the difference in cultural backgrounds, it is English and the learning of Inukitut that allows him to connect with other students.

served students fusion dishes. Instead of simply using beef or chicken, Filipino food was made with caribou, explained Elizaga, whose parents are from the Philippines. According to this Grade 12 student, Inuksuk High School embraces multiculturalism.

"Everyone's accepting and respectful of other people's cultures," said Elizaga.

Elizaga views Iqaluit as her home and recognizes the importance of learning Inuit culture.

It is quite challenging to understand Inuit culture when coming from a different culture, she admitted.

For this 17-year-old Philipino-Canadian stu-

dent, it is difficult to relate to Inuit culture since it is not practiced at home.

"It's hard to relate to stories that you're not used to hearing from your own family members about their experiences," she explained.

However according to Elizaga, the advantage of learning in such a school environment are plenty. There are opportunities to learn Inuktitut and enrol in courses that teach Inuit values and stories.

"Learning in a diverse environment, we learn about other people's cultures and learn how to accept and respect other people and celebrate everyone's diversity," said Elizaga.

Mild temperatures this winter are a cause for concern for at least one biologist studying marine and terrestrial mammals in Nunavut.

Reduced snow levels Wildlife biologist Jeff Higdon says reduced snow levels may cause problems for female polar bears, who need ample snow to dig dens in which they give birth.

Research has shown that in important maternity denning areas, such as east Baffin Island, female bears travel to higher altitudes on hills and mountains to find adequate snow depth, stated Higdon.

A reduction in snowfall levels during early winter will potentially reduce available denning habitat for these animals, explained the wildlife biologist.

Late freeze-up For polar bears a longer openwater season leads to more time spent on shore. This can reduce seal hunting opportunities for the bears.

Walruses who depend on sea ice as a haul out area are also affected by late freeze ups.

When an icy platform is not available, walruses have to resort to haul-out areas on land. This limits foraging opportunities for walruses, explained Hidgon.

Freezing rain Caribou may potentially be affected by freezing rain. Past events have indicated that caribou may have disappeared and died because of freezing rain. In one extreme case, it is believed the native caribou on Nunavut's Belcher Islands disappeared in the late 1800s when freezing rain created a layer of ice over all the lichen.

More recently, about three years ago, numerous caribou were found dead by Environment and Climate Change Canada migratory bird researchers on Prince Charles Island in Foxe Basin, Nunavut.

"It's likely that they died of starvation due to ice cover on lichen forage," said Higdon.

According to Dr. Stephen D. Petersen, director of conservation

and research at Assiniboine Park Zoo, for polar bears, rain on snow may be detrimental. Polar bear dens may collapse, killing the moms and cubs.

However, Arctic animals adapt really well to a fair amount of variation in the weather, said Petersen.

Milder weather may be an advantage for some animals since they are not using as much fat resources to keep warm. For example, muskox and caribou may not lose weight as fast.

"There will be winners and losers if the weather in Nunavut is consistently milder. For ice adapted species (ringed seals and polar bears) eventually it will put them at high risk and for other species it might be better (harbour seals and killer whales).

"It is really difficult to predict what will happen in the short term," wrote Petersen.

According to hunter Max Kullak, despite the mild weather, the behaviour of animals in Arctic Bay where he lives has not been an issue.

"Hunting is still pretty much the same. Mild weather doesn't seem to affect their (animals') way of life and movements," said Kullak.

Kelly Fraser remembered 'More than a musician ... a voice for her people'

Kelly Fraser died by suicide on Christmas Eve. Memorials were held in Winnipeg, Iqaluit and Sanikiluaq.

A memorial service was held in Sanikiluaq for Inuk singer Kelly Fraser on Jan. 5, who died by suicide on Christmas Eve. Close to 100 community members gathered at the local community hall to remember the 26-yearold musician.

Fraser had many friends in Sanikiluaq as a young child growing up in the southern Hudson Bay community.

Annesie Appaqaq, a friend of Fraser, remembered her as a very helpful person.

"She helped a lot of people and even me," said Appaqaq.

The atmosphere during the one-hour evening service was described as "sad and touching" by Appaqaq.

For the memorial, a community member had framed a photo of Fraser with words, "love u" written above it. Red and pink flowers were also placed near the photo.

"It was beautiful," Appaqaq said of the service.

Touching lives beyond Sanikiluaq Outside of Sanikiluaq, Fraser touched the lives of many with her songwriting and music. For her next

album, called Decolonize, the musician had plans to collaborate with other artists like Silla and Rise, Mob Bounce and Mamarudegyal MTHC. Those who worked with her told Nunavut News her love of Inuktitut and working with community members across Nunavut.

"Kelly was a strong, resilient and independent Inuit artist. Her talent was undeniable and she loved rapping and singing in Inuktitut. It is my belief she played a strong role in the current revival of Inuit culture," wrote Rise Ashen, producer of Silla and Rise.

"Kelly Fraser was an amazing, bright light who truly wanted to connect with people and loved to love others. Kelly was doing extremely important work in her community and other remote communities, she had a strong voice that she used to speak about difficult topics that had previously been left mostly unaddressed," wrote Mamarudegyal MTHC. "She was more than a musician, she was an advocate and a voice for her people: that's her legacy. She had so much to offer through her music," wrote Craig Frank Edes from Mob Bounce.

With the repair of almost 27,000 square feet of cracked concrete floors in the new Iglulik high school now complete, the building is closer to opening.

The Department of Education indicated that a final inspection has yet to take place and didn't provide a date for that milestone.

Floors were deficient in all classrooms and common areas, but not in the gymnasium and there were no other structural issues, according to Education Minister David Joanasie.

The 33,140-square-foot facility, built with a $30-million budget, was originally scheduled to open during the fall of 2018 but that has been delayed while the lingering flooring issues were addressed by contractor FCNQ Construction, which is based in Quebec.

Iglulik in grades 10 to 12 who will attend the new school, which was built to accommodate up to 229 students, Joanasie stated.

In the meantime, students and staff have continued to make use of the aging Ataguttaaluk Secondary School, which is near 97 per cent capacity.

Newly elected Iglulik mayor talks priorities Merlyn Recinos aims for community self-reliance through an economic development corp

Recently-elected Mayor Merlyn Recinos comes from an economic development background and he has ambitions to help make Iglulik more self-reliant.

Recinos is determined to form an economic development corporation, to be owned by the community, that would take over construction of local houses, bid for contracts issued by Baffinland Iron Mines, offer employment training, nurture a mini-mall in the old hamlet building and set up a healing centre that would offer cultural healing.

Funding for a feasibility study for this bold venture is coming from the GN. The Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency and the Kakivak Association have been approached to help finance the next phase. But it's a means to an end, Recinos explained.

"Communities can be self-driven.

A lot of times we end up waiting for things from the federal and territorial government and we forget that we have the power to do a lot in our communities as well," he said, adding that

Iglulik is home to IsumaTV and some "extremely talented and very cultural" individuals.

Recinos said he wants to keep Inuit culture and language at the forefront, which can also be showcased in tourism opportunities. He foresees the economic development corporation marketing sealskin parkas to sell to highend shops in China.

"We want to create an industry that supports the hunter, the person that cleans (the sealskin), the tanner and the seamstress in Iglulik," he said, adding that the purchase of the parka can be coupled with a trip to Iglulik to experience the community, its people and culture.

Baffinland expansion decision In regards to the proposed expansion of Baffinland's Mary River mine, the mayor said he didn't want the municipality arguing for the final say in whether phase two of the mine proceeds. Instead, the hamlet occupies two seats on the Iglulik Working Group.

The hunters and trappers association also accounts for two seats with the others being held by an elder adviser,

a female adviser, a male adviser and a youth adviser.

"They're the ones that review the information. They're the ones that go into the community, engage the community and bring back thoughts from the community," Recinos said.

"They're also the ones that look at the technical information. It's going to be their advice or their submission that we're going to take ... it's really the community making the decision."

Recinos entered the mayor's office by prevailing among a crowded field in the Oct. 29 municipal election. He finished with 103 votes, more than Joanna Haulli Quassa's 84, Matt Teed's 80, Illisapi Haulli's 50, Peter Ivalu's 37 and Josiah Kadlutsiak's 27.

Recinos runs Arctic Fresh, an independent grocery and dry goods supplier, along with his wife Rhoda, who's the CEO. He also served as the hamlet's economic development officer prior to being elected.

Over the years, he has volunteered his time to assist others in building business capacity, improving their employability skill and helping residents get their driver's licence.

Documentary highlights reality for Nunavut Northern News Services

With the debut of CBC's High Arctic Haulers, Canadians coast to coast to coast will get a chance to see what it really takes to haul goods to Nunavut communities.

This latest iteration of Northernbased television programming shows yet another perspective on the challenges of Northern life, albeit with the usual emphasis on drama and less so on the mundane.

There have been several shows over the last decade focusing on the North – all marketed to an incredulous southern audience who can only marvel at the difficulties faced by Northerners trying to get in an order of groceries or chipping through ice to set a net for fish.

Much of it has been superficial baloney, whether it be Ice Road Truckers, which showcased the diamond mine winter road transportation system in the NWT; or Ice Pilots, starring the Second World War era planes of the Northwest Territories' Buffalo Airways; or Arctic Air, a fictional drama following the trials and tribulations of a fictional airline, which was particularly bad television and took many liberties with its northern setting.

Hopefully Haulers, created by Kelvin Redvers of Hay River, NWT, will paint a more truthful account,

because there really is a story to tell about shipping in the high Arctic, one that should open the eyes of southerners to the great cost and difficulty of this endeavour.

If these past shows' popularity is any indication, Canadians will gobble up this newest northern icerelated show and it will be one of the first in our largest territory.

There might even be a few residual benefits to follow, such as interest in the Arctic shipping professions or even in Arctic tourism as viewers learn about scenic communities and culture.

What High Arctic Haulers highlights more than anything though is just how difficult it is to transport goods to Nunavummiut.

For the residents of Pangnirtung, Resolute or Pond Inlet, to name only a few, relying on sealifts to bring everything in from vehicles to constructions supplies to food is a yearly reality.

Those waiting for the precious cargo also have to hope Mother Nature plays ball as harsh ice condi-

tions can considerably slow down and alter schedules.

In 2018, for example, unfavourable ice conditions led to serious delays which saw the NWT-based Marine Transportation Services (MTS), which supplies the Kitikmeot, in federal court for three lawsuits.

With air cargo bringing in a large quantity of food as well, the realities of transporting goods to the Arctic means a high cost of living for everyone in the territory.

Southerners developing a greater understanding of life in Nunavut should only help support calls to alleviate the needs of the people in the territory, starting with the need for improved transportation, but also with cost of living, the need for proper medical services, proper economic drivers and more housing.

Though this will be some light Sunday night entertainment for most, perhaps they will realize there are real Canadian citizens living this reality.

So when southern politicians and their constituents are sitting around at budget time each year and wondering why so much of taxpayers' money is spent on the North, hopefully High Arctic Haulers will show them the arduous path to getting necessities that other Canadians take for granted.

Moving forward Moving forward involves positivity and confidence in accomplishing a thought or a plan. This also includes more than one person and/or organizations.

There must be serious thought and discussions for something to move ahead. A strong conviction with vivid explanations on why the thought or scheme should be accepted and carried out. To illustrate perhaps another way to move forward, I could use some personal experience while counselling a young man.

I had the privilege and occasion to speak with a young man who had thoughts that he was not getting anywhere in his personal relationships. He started off by saying "I am on an up-hill climb every day". I immediately replied good for you. He looked at me and quickly said, "what do you mean good for me?"

I said at least you are not at the bottom of the hill but climbing slowly.

There must be acceptance and acknowledgement as well in order to remain positive.

We determine within ourselves and choose not to be down and out for too long. We need time to access where we are then put a plan in place for reconciliation and restoration. This may be difficult at times but as long as we are consistent we will move forward.

In my View Harry Maksagak is a Cambridge Bay resident and former underground miner at the Lupin gold mine. He has been married for 43 years and has five children, 28 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

I've used the baby example many times and I will use it again. When they are trying to stand up and walk, they will fall down more than the steps taken but they get up and try again. As adults we are no different; we may slip and slide at times but we must keep trying.

There is another way too, we are not alone. We can join in with the various support groups that have been established; AA, women's and men's groups, youth groups and so on. It seems a lot easier when we see that I am not alone, there are other men or women or youth who are reaching out for the added assistance in our journey of healing. The biggest step is admitting our frailty and needing to get control back.

Once in a while the Serenity Prayer may boost your confidence and will to move forward.

RCMP investigate theft; intruders use drill to try to access safe

The RCMP are seeking suspects in a Jan. 2 theft from Peter Pitseolak High School in Cape Dorset that resulted in goods being stolen and some damage to the facility.

"Extensive" video footage showing the culprits has been turned over to the police to

assist them in identifying those responsible for the crime, stated Kathy Pelletier, school principal.

Among the items taken from the building were food from the school canteen and breakfast program; a computer keyboard; a hand drill and bits; kitchen utensils including chef's knives, which were locked up in drawers; baseball caps; and shoes.

Some drywall, windows and window trim were damaged.

As well, the intruders used a hand drill to try to open a safe located in the principal's office.

They were unsuccessful. The culprits initially gained entry to the school through a door that had accidentally been left open, according to a communications specialist with

the Department of Community and Government Services.

"Procedures are being reviewed on how best to address the re-occurrence of a similar incident," Pelletier stated.

The $34-million Peter Pitseolak High School opened in September 2018 as a replacement for the original high school of the same name, which was destroyed by fire in 2015.

Resolute looking to reopen arena Close to $100,000 in repairs needed

Hamlet council is aiming to tackle nearly $100,000 in needed repairs to reopen the community arena, which was dormant last year and much of the year prior.

There are numerous problems plaguing the facility, such as a faulty air handling unit, broken motors for the fans connected to the building's heaters, leaks from the glycol line, failing relay

switches and the water tank needs to be cleaned, according to senior administrative officer Kimberley Young.

Resolute Mayor Mark Amarualik said he's eager to see the facility – built in 2011 for $7.8 million – back in service for the community's 200 residents.

"I hope we can get the arena opened as soon as possible so that we can utilize it during the coldest time of the year and during the dark season – more activities and

more things to do," said Amarualik, who previously served as the community's recreation co-ordinator.

The hamlet sent an estimate for repairs to the Department of Community and Government Services (CGS) in early December but there was no official response as of early last week, said Young.

"We're trying to cover the costs ourselves at this point ... we're just coming out of deficit now and we're trying really hard to stay out of deficit," she

said. "This is a big chunk of money so we're really hopeful that we can get some assistance."

CGS told Nunavut News that the hamlet is responsible for the operations and maintenance of the arena and the municipality intends to manage the repair work.

"If the hamlet requires additional support, they are eligible to pursue this by submitting a proposal to CGS," a CGS communications specialist stated on Jan. 8.

ATCO, which has an office in Resolute, has been lending a hand, Young said, noting that many of the repairs are beyond what hamlet staff can perform because certified tradespeople are required.

"It's kind of a joint effort," she said of ATCO's assistance.

Quttiktuq MLA David Akeeagok said he visited Resolute recently and the problems with the arena arose in discussions. He said he's aware that hamlet council is preparing a plan to work

closely with CGS, although he pointed out that the arena is a hamlet facility.

"I'm confident that this will be done in a orderly manner," Akeeagok stated.

In Cambridge Bay, the GN spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to have mould removed from sections of that community's arena in late 2018 and early 2019 as the air quality was considered a risk to public health and those repairs kept the building closed for a year and a half.

New Cambridge Bay HTO office expected to open this week

Ikaluktutiak/Cambridge Bay After several months of construction, the wait could be over for the new Ekaluktutiak Hunters and Trappers Organization (EHTO) office building to open.

A final walk-through was set for Friday and it's hoped that the new facility, measuring close to 1,200 square feet, will be in use this week, said Beverly Maksagak, manager of the EHTO. She said she's excited about the new location, situated about half a block from the Northern store.

It's equipped with a wheelchair ramp that will make it easier for elders and others to access the building than the previous office, which was up a flight of stairs on the second floor of former Kitikmeot Corporation office building. Despite that, some of the elders would climb those stairs.

"When they're determined and they want to attend the meeting or if we invite them and we tell them, 'Gee, we've got no other place but here to meet' ... they made it up," Maksagak said. "At least now we're going to have a one-level where elders can come as they please."

Do some training, keep your laptop

Sanirajak/Hall Beach The Kakivak Association is offering five days of preemployment training in Hall Beach this week for up to 10 people. Those who successfully complete the program will be allowed to take ownership of the laptops they used during the training.

"That's a pretty good deal, learn how to get a job and at the same time get a computer," Hall Beach senior administrative officer Louis Primeau said of the opportunity.

The focus will be on how to search for jobs effectively, writing cover letters and resumes, time management, job

interview tips and computer skills, including Microsoft Office, according to Peter Tumilty, Kakivak's finance manager.

Similar courses will be offered in Iglulik, Clyde River, Pond Inlet and Kimmirut before the end of the fiscal year in mid-March, Tumilty said.

Depending on the level of demand, Kakivak will continue to bring such training to the communities later in the year, he added.

"It's not necessarily a one-shot deal," he said.

Ottawa The Governor General has awarded the Star of Courage to the late Aaron Gibbons of Arviat. Gibbons, 31, was killed by a polar bear on Sentry Island, approximately 10 km from Arviat, on July 3, 2018. The Star of Courage "recognizes acts of conspicuous courage in circumstances of great peril," according to the Office of the Governor General. The medal features a silver star with four points. A gold maple leaf in the centre is inscribed with the word "courage."

Gibbons was among 30 Canadians to receive a bravery distinction in an announcement made in the Canada Gazette, issued on Jan. 4. An award ceremony where Gibbons' family will be eligible to receive his award on his behalf will be held at a later date.

Honouring Joe Enook with dance competition

Panniqtuuq/Pangnirtung A community dance competition was held in honour of Joe Enook The avid supporter of Inuit dance and dance competitions died last March.

"He loved organizing Inuit dancing especially in his home town in Pond Inlet where he organized competitions for children to keep promoting Inuit dance," wrote his step-daughter Joanna Kilabuk-Evic.

The dance competition was held for couples 13 years of age or older. It took place from 8 p.m. to midnight on Jan. 4.

At the community hall, 17 couples danced away for hours to win cash prizes. Four judges, including Enook's wife Mary Kilabuk, eventually selected three couples as winners.

First prize and $500 was given to Chitee Kilabuk and Raygelee Keenainak, followed by Johnny Kuluguqtuq and Alice Harper who won $300. In third place, Seemee Papatsie and Ann Dialla took home $200.

In between the elimination rounds, the community members danced and played games together.

"The atmosphere was great, no serious competition, just open and fun for all," expressed Kilabuk-Evic.

Cape Dorset artist's exhibit to open at University of Saskatchewan Kenojuak Ashevak exhibition opening at University of Saskatchewan to be broadcast to Cape Dorset

When the exhibition Kenojuak Ashevak: Life and Legacy opens at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon on Jan. 17, residents in Cape Dorset will be able to watch via broadcast at Kinngait Studios, despite being 2,200 km away.

The academic institution's College Art Gallery will be the first venue to host the national touring exhibition, which will showcase some never-before-seen drawings from West Baffin Eskimo Cooperative's archives.

In addition, there will be a publication launch, presenting dozens of Kenojuak's prints side by side with their original drawings, according to the Kinngait Arts Foundation. Silaqi Ashevak, Kenojuak's daughter, wrote the foreword, reflecting on life with her renowned mother while curator Leslie Boyd provides "a full, touching history of this pioneering artist of the far North," Kinngait

Arts Foundation stated in a news release.

The University of Saskatchewan will be the site of the exhibition until April 17.

Kenojuak Ashevak, who lived from 1927-2013, "was part of a pioneering generation of Arctic creators. She enjoyed an illustrious international career and continues to be recognized as one of Canada's preeminent artists and cultural icons," stated Kinngait Arts Studios.

Iglulik man charged with assaulting woman and youth

Iglulik

An Iglulik man is facing several charges after being accused of assaulting a woman and a female youth.

Lester Aqqiaruq, 26, is due in court on Jan. 21 to answer to charges of sexual assault with a weapon, aggravated assault, assault causing bodily harm, assault with a weapon, assaulting a police officer and three counts of failing to comply with terms of his probation.

He is being kept in jail after appearing before a justice of the peace.

The RCMP's investigation is ongoing. Anyone who may have information on Aqqiaruq's activities is urged to contact the RCMP at (867)-979-1111 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-2228477.

Some things to look out for as a new year in sports gets underway

2020 is going to be another busy year in Nunavut for sport and recreation so it's time to take a look at what should dominate the headlines as athletes and communities start to ramp things up.

Here's what you can expect to see: Pond Inlet's Field of Dreams Recall last April when the Jays Care Foundation announced that it would be one of the communities to receive a grant through its Field of Dreams program … $150,000, to be exact, to help get the community's baseball diamond back into shape.

That $150,000 will cover everything needed to make baseball a much better pastime in Pond Inlet: bleachers, dugouts, benches, drainage system and, most importantly, brand new turf for the outfield because you can't really grow grass in Pond Inlet; the tree line ends somewhere near the NWT-Nunavut border.

Dawn Currie MacKinnon, executive director of the Recreation and Parks Association of Nunavut (RPAN), said back in April that the whole thing came about after a cruise ship

operated by One Ocean Expeditions docked in the community.

"One of the things the passengers wanted to do was play a game of baseball once they saw the field. The diamond was in pretty rough shape but they worked with it and did the best they could."

It's a safe bet that once passengers return to the community in the near future, they will notice a change for the better.

Nunavut's medal haul at the 2020 Arctic Winter Games As a unit, Team Nunavut won 55 ulus at the 2018 Arctic Winter Games. That's a fine total, considering the territory didn't compete in every sport. But there's every reason to believe that the total will go up this year and here's why: One look at the wrestling team and you'll notice that most of those who are scheduled to make the trip to Whitehorse for the Games have major Games experience. There's no need to go on about Eekeeluak Avalak of Cambridge Bay because he's already the presumptive favourite in his weight class, no matter who steps in front of him. What people should be doing is put a stopwatch on him to see how fast

Speedskaters in action Iqaluit The Nunavut Speed Skating Association is beginning the 2020 portion of its season and the first event of the calendar year is set to happen this coming weekend in Iqaluit.

The Arctic Winter Games Arena will host a mini-meet on Jan. 18 and it's open to all speedskaters of any ability for what's described as a way to learn the rules and techniques

The hockey teams will be out for a measure of revenge, especially the midget boys squad.

Martin Joy of Iqaluit has the job of ensuring the bitter silver ulu result from two years is rectified this time around and don't think he doesn't know that. He had the bantams two years ago and was in attendance for the midget boys game. He doesn't need to be reminded.

David Clark of Rankin Inlet will provide a steady hand for the bantam boys and that division is always a crapshoot while the girls team will be in tough with the likes of Alaska, the NWT and Alberta North sending some pretty strong teams.

Arctic sports will be where Nunavut will see most of its success and if Drew Bell of Arviat is part of the line-up, you can pretty much make a nameplate for him and rotate it around the podium. He will clean up, like he usually does.

Badminton is another sport where the territory is always competitive and should be again though there is the perennial worry about Greenland and Alberta North. Greenland is always the presumptive favourites in any badminton competition at the Games but Nunavut should give them a good run. The speedskaters

Helen Roos, the association's president, said Jan. 11 was the original date for the meet but it was pushed back a week after consultations with the coaches about the meet being a bit too close to skaters getting back on the ice.

Action is scheduled to get underway at 8 a.m. on race day.

Junior curlers set for battle Nunavut The New Holland Canadian Juniors will be the first national curling championship of the calendar year and Nunavut will have skin in the game when things get underway in Langley, B.C., on Jan. 18.

Competitive hockey in Rankin Inlet The new barn in Rankin Inlet is finally open and that loud noise you may have heard coming from the Kivalliq region last November was the community breathing a huge sigh of relief.

The old barn had its heyday with several wonderful memories from tournaments gone by but expect some better tournaments this time around. Why? Well, it's a level and regulation ice surface. The ice at the old arena was uneven in spots and it was a few feet short. The new ice is even all the way around and it's 200 x 85, the proper North American regulation dimensions.

We don't know how the tournaments will turn out but you can expect more excitement from Hockeytown and the community will turn out to support it. But you knew that already.

The Bantam Rock Cup will take place from Jan. 17 to 19 and it will feature players and teams from the Kivalliq region, said David Clark, the hamlet's recreation coordinator.

Everything gets going with the round-robin with the playoffs beginning on Jan. 19 and ending with the final later that day.

New recreation framework in the offing Sport and Recreation Division set to begin consultations on new sport, physical activity and recreation guidelines

Nunavut's Sport and Recreation Division (SRD) is looking for some advice on how to deliver its sport, physical activity and recreation (SPAR) programs for the next decade.

To do that, the SRD is embarking on a consultative process over the next six months to get feedback from all parts of the sport and recreation diaspora in the territory with the hope of coming up with a framework that it hopes will best serve Nunavummiut going forward.

Katrina Krawec, a sport and recreation development officer with the GN, said there are five specific goals that the SRD is focusing on.

"We're looking at such things as capacity and leadership development, infrastructure and spaces for things to take place, inclusive programs and ensuring that we deliver programs that are culturally appropriate," she said.

The first set of consultations are set to take place on Jan. 19 when the various territorial sport organizations will have a face-to-face conversation with Flo Frank and Caroline Sparks of Common Ground Consulting, the B.C.-based firm which has been hired to oversee everything. The following day will see community sports organizations have their say through phone interviews.

"We have plenty of stakeholders involved," said Krawec. "Most people know that the major component of the SRD is the Team Nunavut program but we're looking to bring everyone to the table: community organizations, municipal organizations and governments, recreation groups, Inuit organizations. We want everyone to have a say in this and have a chance to speak with the consultants."

If a group can't make it in person or by phone, they have the option to send their thoughts through e-mail or the post, she added.

Youth groups will be a big part of it as will the Recreation and Parks Association of Nunavut and the territory's Youth Ambassador Program, Krawec said, with the idea behind the new framework being to bring it in line with existing national priorities and territorial policies It's expected that the process will take about six months from start to finish with feedback on the draft goals being the first part of it.

Krawec said that's so the SRD can get a sense of what communities are doing right now in terms of SPAR delivery.

"That will give us a chance to fill in the gaps and update the draft if we need to before we move forward," she said.

Krawec is hopeful that the final framework will be ready by the early part of summer.

No. 4: A great pass to … oxygen College football gave us some good ones this year and this one ended up being better than the South Alabama-Memphis fiasco.

Texas Tech took on Kansas in October. Game tied 34-34 late in the fourth quarter. Kansas placekicker Liam Jones lines up for a field goal which would put them ahead if it was good. Jones' kick was blocked and Texas Tech's Nathan Coleman III picked up the ball. He's running up field, stops and pitches a lateral … to absolutely no one. That's right – nothing but air there.

Kansas lineman Keven Feder recovers the ball, giving Jones another chance to try a field goal, this one from 32 yards. He would make no mistake this time as Kansas went on to win, 37-34.

Listen, you can feel awful for Coleman III and I do have a slight twinge of sadness for him but you have to know your surroundings. Like with the above situation, the best thing for Coleman III to do was to fall and kill the play. Take your chances in overtime because in college football, each team gets a chance to score; it isn't sudden-death like it is in the National Football League.

Easy enough to criticize? Sure, but don't think Texas Tech's fans weren't saying the same thing I just said.

No. 3: You have to pass it first, you see …

I knew this one would be up there when I first wrote about it.

It's one of the most basic plays in basketball: inbounding the ball when it goes out of bounds. It's one of the first things a player is taught. Eric Bledsoe of the Milwaukee Bucks obviously forgot that part of the game in November.

Bledsoe was set to inbound versus the Los Angeles Clippers that evening after the ball had gone out of play. The referee handed him the ball and he literally began dribbling up the court. I had to take a look at this twice to make sure I was actually seeing Eric Bledsoe dribble up court on an inbound play.

The referee caught it right away and everyone wondered what happening once the whistle blew. No, Eric, you can't simply dribble up the floor on an inbound, as much as several players would love to.

Bledsoe laughed about it and so can we. It was funny because it was a total and complete brain fart. We've all had them.

No. 2: Congrats on finishing one lap early We take you back to the Diamond League track meet in Lausanne, Switzerland in July for one of the great screw-ups in long-distance running history.

Hagos Gebrhiwet of Ethiopia was well out in front in the men's 5,000-metre event after hitting his finishing kick in the late going of the race and crossed the finish line to win it all … or so he thought. There he went off to celebrate with the fans while everyone else was still going around. Why? Because there was still one lap left to go. His compatriot, Yomif Kejelcha, ended up winning the race with Gebrhiwet ending up in 10th.

Now, this wasn't one of those hard luck moments because this is all on Gebrhiwet. As he crossed the finish line to win, the lap counter at track-side was clearly ringing the bell signifying the last lap so there should have been no mistake.

Everyone else knew the race wasn't over.

And no. 1: The non-call It's the pass interference call that will haunt the New Orleans Saints forever.

In short, Tommylee Lewis was laid out by Nickell RobeyColeman of the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Championship Game back in January in what should have been pass interference but it wasn't called. Everyone associated with the Saints went nuts and you could hardly blame them. Officials miss calls all the time but this one was a slam dunk.

It launched reviews, letters to the U.S. Congress and even lawsuits looking to have the call overturned but anyone with a functioning half-brain cell knew it would live forever in infamy. To Lewis' credit, he said back in August that he's gotten over the call and we should as well. This will be the last time I will mention it and it should be for you as well.

The holidays are over when we see our kids heading back to school and having to get up early again. Back to school and back to work for everyone.

Ringing in the new year has been a cold

one. Cambridge Bay residents had a busy holiday season with games, lots of Christmas festivities, presents, good food, beautiful lights and most of all the tireless volunteers who made it all happen. They helped us celebrate the holiday season and of course all the good cooks who cooked some beautiful feasts for all to enjoy. Quana Quana Quanapiaq amihumik.

A big thank you to all the businesses, organizations, individuals who donated prizes to all ages to enjoy. I see across Nunavut from Facebook there were many live music and dancing, square dancing but Cambridge Bay does not have that luck to have a live band play for square dances and jigging. To the communities who do, you are so lucky you have your own bands. Perhaps someday Cambridge Bay will have accordion players, fiddlers and band to play to keep square dancing and jigging alive.

Cambridge Bay, Nunavut is known to have very very cold weather this time of year compared to other communities in the north.

Temperatures have been extremely colder this time. At one time temperatures reached -60C. Not much daylight hours yet, but soon will be brighter when the sun returns to brighten our day on cold days.
